Director Selection Before I choose one director to focus on, I was required to select several options. I need to to introduce, justify, rationalize and explain the selections, and write a short piece about each director, anwsering questions including: _Why have I chosen him/her? _What’s their story? List significant facts, career highlights, influences, contemporaries as well as a bit about their work (stylistically, conceptually, thematically) — including a singular report of the film you screened _What’s the plot? _Who’s in it? _What’s the theme, outcome and importance of the piece?

Bibliography Born on May 1, 1969, in Houston, Texas, Wes Anderson is an American film director, producer, screenwriter and actor. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay 3 times and received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Director for The Grand Budapest Hotel in 2014. Anderson’s cinematic influences include François Truffaut, Louis Malle, Satyajit Ray,John Huston, Mike Nichols, Hal Ashby, Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Orson Welles, and Roman Polanski. Anderson has chosen to direct mostly fast-paced comedies marked by more serious or melancholic elements, with themes often centered on grief, loss of innocence, parental abandonment, adultery, sibling rivalry and unlikely friendships. His movies have been noted for being unusually character-driven, and by turns both derided and praised with terms like “literary geek chic”. The plots of his movies often feature thefts and unexpected disappearances, with a tendency to borrow liberally from the caper genre. Anderson has been noted for his extensive use of flat space camera moves, obsessively symmetrical compositions, snap-zooms, slow-motion walking shots, a deliberately limited color palette, and hand-made art direction often utilizing miniatures, which give his movies the feel of being “self-contained worlds”, or a “scale model household”. According to Michael Chabon, with “a baroque pop bent that is not realist, surrealist or magic realist”, but rather might be described as “fabulist”. Film: “The Grand Budapest Hotel” Inspired by the life of Stepan Zweig, the film did a beautiful job of transposing Stefan Zweig’s actual life into the dream life of his stories. M. Gustave, the main character is modelled significantly on Zweig. In the film, Gustave, a legendary concierge at a famous hotel from the fictional Republic of Zubrowka between the first and second World Wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend and protege. Gustave prides himself on providing first-class service to the hotel’s guests, including satisfying the sexual needs of the many elderly women who stay there. When one of Gustave’s lovers dies mysteriously, Gustave finds himself the recipient of a priceless painting and the chief suspect in her murder. By the end, Gustave sacrifice his life to save Zero.

Bibliography Quentin Tarantino is an American filmmaker, screenwriter, and actor. His films are characterized by nonlinear storylines, satirical subject matter, an aestheticization of violence and gore, extended scenes of dialogue, utilization of ensemble casts consisting of established and lesser-known performers, references to popular culture, soundtracks primarily containing songs and score pieces from the 1960s to the 1980s, and features of neo-noir film. His career began in the late 1980s, when he wrote and directed My Best Friend’s Birthday. In the early 1990s, he began his career as an independent filmmaker with the release of Reservoir Dogs in 1992. Its popularity was boosted by his second film, Pulp Fiction (1994), a black comedy crime film that was a major success both among critics and audienceswhich is named as one of the most significant works of modern cinema. Tarantino’s other well-know works include Kill Bill, a highly stylized “revenge flick” in the cinematic traditions of Kung fu films, Japanese martial arts, Spaghetti Westerns and Italian horror, Death Proof , Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained. He has received many industry awards, including two Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, two BAFTA Awards and the Palme d’Or, and has been nominated for an Emmy and a Grammy. Film: Pulp Fiction Pulp Fiction is a 1994 American neo-noir crime black comedy film. To begin with a diner hold-up staged by a couple, Pulp Fiction’s narrative is told out of chronological order, and follows three main interrelated stories: mob contract killer Vincent Vega is the protagonist of the first story, prizefighter Butch Coolidge is the protagonist of the second, and Vincent’s partner Jules Winnfield is the protagonist of the third. Directed in a highly stylized manner, Pulp Fiction connects the intersecting storylines of Los Angeles mobsters, fringe players, small-time criminals, and a mysterious briefcase. Considerable screen time is devoted to monologues and casual conversations that reveal the characters’ senses of humor and perspectives on life. The picture’s self-reflexivity, unconventional structure, and extensive use of homage and pastiche have led critics to describe it as a prime example of postmodern film. The film has also been described as a black comedy and a “neo-noir”. In 2013, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

Film: Wings of Desire The film is about invisible, immortal angels who populate Berlin and listen to the thoughts of the human inhabitants and comfort those who are in distress. Even though the city is densely populated, many of the people are isolated or estranged from their loved ones. One of the angels, played by Bruno Ganz, falls in love with a beautiful, lonely trapeze artist. The angel chooses to become human so that he can experience the human sensory pleasures, ranging from enjoying food to touching a loved one, and so that he can experience human love with the trapeze artist. The film is shot in both a rich, sepia-toned black-and-white and color, with the former being used to represent the world as experienced by the angels. The movie was made with a minimalist script; it is a mood piece exploring people,

Pedro Almodóvar Biography Pedro Almodóvar Caballero, born 25 September 1949, is a Spanish film director, screenwriter, producer and former actor. He came to prominence as a director and screenwriter during La Movida Madrileña, a cultural renaissance that followed the death of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco. His first few films characterised the sense of sexual and political freedom of the period. In 1986, he established his own film production company, El Deseo, with his younger brother Agustín Almodóvar, responsible for producing all of his films since Law of Desire. Almodóvar achieved international recognition for his black comedy-drama film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and went on to more success with the dark romantic comedy film Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990), the melodrama High Heels (1991) and the romantic drama thriller Live Flesh (1997). His subsequent two films won an Academy Award each: All About My Mother (1999) received the award for Best Foreign Language Film while Talk to Her (2002) earned him the award for Best Original Screenplay. Almodóvar followed this with the drama Volver (2006), the romantic thriller Broken Embraces (2009), the psychological thriller The Skin I Live In (2011) and the drama Julieta (2016), all of which were in competition for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Design Brief
DESIGN BRIEF Thread Women, desperately yet furiously search for resolutions to the chaos running in their life. After a series intense fights against the chaotic situation, they regain a sense of personal independence and move to a new life. Positioning/History of Festival The festival will center on the problems women confront in their life and present how the women in the director’s films deal with similar problems. As the problems will be rootly related to the target audience they will be interested in the festival. Audience GROUP 1 Midle-aged women in a relationship, who are experienceing or had experienced difficulty time in the relationship and are looking for a recovering way. GROUP 2 Young women who are dealing with gender steretypes on them can find inspirations from the film festival. GROUP 3 Men in a marriage who want to have a better understanding their loved ones for a healthier relationship. Location and Dates Brava Theatre Center, San Francisco, Nov 22-24 Brava Theater Center, operated by Brava! For Women in the Arts, dedicates to produce, present and cultivate the artistic expression of women, people of color, youth, LGBTQ and other unheard voices, which I think perfectly correspond with Almodovar’s film universe. Narrative I am a housewife in my 30s, living in an apartment in a urban area. I am now furious about my man’s unexplained abandonment, which happened together with other chaos in my life. I am leaving the apartment to find the man, and also find resolutions to my chaotic life.

Thread
THREAD STRUCTURE The thread describes what holds the components of the film festival together thematically, which also describes the overall vision of the director, uncovering the undiscovered link between the films of the director. It will have at least 3 parts: (a) who are we talking about, (b) what happens and (c) how does it end... but there will most likely be a few other points (d, e, f ) that make the thread unique to the director. Here follows the thread I developed for my director: A

Guiding Narrative
GUIDING NARRATIVE Part of building a consistent visual system is not only having discrete parts and pieces that work together, but having pieces within the buckets work in unison. In order to accomplish this, a technique I am instructed to use is to establish a guiding narrative or theme — a quick story I can tell which helps me and those around me to explain what my idea is all about. The structure of it will look like this: (1) Who am I? // (2) Where am I? // (3) What am I doing?. Here follow the structure of my guiding narractive for this film festival:
WHO I am a housewife in my 30s WHERE I lived in an apartment in a urban area WHAT I am now furious about my man’s unexplained abandonment, which happened together with other chaos in my daily life. I am leaving the apartment to find the man, and also find resolutions to my chaotic life.
