After doing an integration analysis on Washington, D.C., there were a few areas of notable isolation compared to the rest of the city. For obvious reasons, this included streets within certain secure government areas, such as the Pentagon. Another isolated area is the Arlington National Cemetery. This is one of the only large green space in the surveyed area of D.C. and, as is common with cemeteries and other large parks, there are few roads within the space and few entrances to this network of roads. A short distance north of the Cemetery is an isolated neighbourhood called Colonial Village. However, this neighbourhood is on the edge of the surveyed are, which it means that it could in fact be more integrated but because the sample size isn’t larger it can’t be verified on this map. Similarly, other seemingly isolated areas on the outskirts of this map should be disregarded in making any assumptions about their integration. The Smithsonian National Zoological Park is also isolated for reasons similar to that of the Cemetery. The roads within are for customers only (although admission is free) and the entrances have to be strictly controlled for the security of both people and animals. Two smaller cemeteries are also present, St. Mary’s and Mt. Olive, which are isolated as well and so is Theodore Roosevelt Island, which is a trail park that can only be accessed by one bridge. In fact, there are very few public roads within D.C. that are not well integrated. For comparison, I also did a study of my birthplace, Kharkov, Ukraine. While the borders of the Kharkov map were also showing low integration due to being on the edge of the surveyed area, this can also be attributed to the fact that these areas are where the rural lands begin. This can be seen by the decrease in street density, which means an increase in large tracts of single-use land.

Like with D.C., Kharkov has it’s own zoo which is isolated for the same reasons. There is a national monument space called Strilka Square which, although being in the center of the city, is very isolated due its triangular shape, two of the sides of which are blocked off by a river. Unlike D.C., there are many random isolated pockets throughout the city. This is due to the high volume of apartment blocks with inward courtyards. The roads of the courtyards generally have only one entrance from the other streets. In conclusion, when considering the urban area of Kharkov as the city proper, both Kharkov and Washington, D.C. are fairly well integrated with very few isolated areas.
