1. D eep heel cup The heel area is hollowed out like a footprint in the sand – this relieves your back. 2. Internal and external longitudinal arch support This holds your foot securely in the footbed and ensures that your body weight is distributed evenly. 3. Cross arch support Helps shift pressure from the middle to the front of the foot. 4. Toe gripper This stimulates your toe muscles – almost as though you were gripping something with your toes. 5. Cork edging This is deliberately elevated in order to protect your foot and hold it in the footbed.

Healthy walking has a positive effect on your body and well-being. The anatomically shaped Birkis footbed gives your foot a natural posture – as though you were walking barefoot on sand. This makes walking healthier and more comfortable. The footbed isn’t just good for your feet – your whole body will feel better for it. Better balance relieves your joints and back. Relaxation throughout the day – the Birkis footbed supports the natural rolling movement of your feet.
Exceptional comfort

1. The soft suede liner guarantees good air circulation around the foot – for greater well-being. 2. Some shoes, which are specially marked, have additional red viscoelastic foam integrated into the footbed. The classic footbed is thus transformed into a ‘dynamic footbed’. (You can find more information about this in the following.)
3. The first jute layer wicks away moisture from the foot, making the shoe particularly pleasant to wear. 4. The heart of the Birkis footbed is the cork–latex core: it is designed to simulate a footprint in the sand. 5. The second jute later gives the footbed additional stability – every step of the way.

The dynamic footbed comprises a viscoelastic foam (see picture above). ‘Visco-’ represents the shock-absorbing fluid properties of the footbed, while ‘elastic’ refers to the malleability of the material. Dynamic pressure distribution

The dynamic footbed combines these two characteristics. This means that the viscoelastic foam yields under pressure and moulds itself to the individual shape of the foot (viscosity). It does not remain that way permanently but returns to its original shape once the pressure is removed (elasticity). This ensures that the foam provides optimal pressure distribution and excellent shock-absorbing characteristics every step of the way.

The Birkis feel-good materials You should feel well and healthy when wearing our Birkis. That’s why we always set the highest of standards for the materials we use in our sandals and clogs.
Cork, rubber and jute The basic elements of our cork footbeds come from natural sources: cork, rubber and jute. With their shock-absorbing properties, these materials support natural, healthy walking. They are also very breathable, creating pleasant conditions for feet.
Leather types We also select our leathers with the greatest degree of care. We cover the cork footbeds with soft, moisture-absorbing suede to create pleasant conditions for your feet. We use soft nubuck, smooth leather and suede as upper materials. These are also robust and long-lasting.
Birki-cell and Birki foam Whether you’re in the garden or by the lake, you’ll get the most out of your free time wearing sandals and clogs made from Birki foam or Birki-Cell. Both materials are lightweight, flexible, water-resistant and stain-resistant. All models with Birki foam and Birki-Cell are also very robust and easy to clean. The footbeds in our bathing and leisure sandals are also made from Birki foam – simply because it’s the best material for being in and around the water.
Buckles Most of our models are fitted with adjustable buckles. They ensure the fit can be adjusted to suit you. Thanks to the many different colours available, the buckles are always a perfect match for the various designs. A special coating protects the buckles from moisture. This gives you long-lasting enjoyment from your Birkis.
Birko-Flor We use Birko-Flor for an upper material as an alternative to leather. This two-layered material has a robust, resilient and washable outer side and a soft, fleecy inner that caresses the foot. In our bathing sandals the beds are fused with this material. This means we do not have to use adhesives, benefiting both health and the environment.
Birko-Flor with digital print Our Birko-Flor models also include some sandals and clogs featuring individual digital prints. Our digital printing process is very flexible and we can always place the designs in a particular spot. The special thing about this: it allows the pattern to grow with the respective shoe size.
Textile blended fabrics and fleece We use blended textile fabrics and fleece as alternatives to covering our cork footbeds with leather. These materials have particularly beneficial properties: they are robust, stain-resistant, breathable and can be washed in washing machines at 30°C. This is why we use blended textile fabrics and fleece as covers for our replaceable clog footbeds.
Textile Along with Birko-Flor and leather, we also use different types of textile (e.g. mesh and jeans) as an upper material. It is soft and pleasant to wear, a prime example being our flexible stretchy straps.
Wool felt and Birko felt We use wool felt and Birko felt in our cosy felt clogs. Our high-quality wool felt is 100 % natural and is made from sheep’s wool. It is therefore highly robust and very breathable. Birko felt comprises a rayon blend and an artificial fibre felt. The resulting blended material is practically indestructible but still promotes air circulation and is gentle on the skin.

Lucky winner Andrea Richard
ea In October 2009, cheerful Frankfurt resident Andr n competition Richard designed the ‘Spatzi’ as part of a desig , she helped launched by Birkis. Together with the Birkis team rd: ‘I’m to develop the design on the shoe. Andrea Richa s designreally pleased to have won. Working with the Birki ss from the ers was great fun. I found the development proce draft to the finished shoe really exciting.’ tzi’ appeared At the end of 2010, it was ready to go. The ’Spa 2011 in the Birkis main catalogue for the first time in and was immediately a must-have item. Kay – a clog for all occasions Our ‘Kay’ model is an expert in the art of metamorphosis. The fold-down back strap can be pulled down if needed and provides lots of extra support. If it is no longer needed, it can be folded back towards the front. Thanks to two slits, it can even be fixed in place at the front.

1994
The Fun-Birki wins the coveted Red Dot Design Award for product design in New York.
Birki Schuh GmbH is established as a licensed brand of Birkenstock Orthopädie GmbH & Co. KG. The aim: to make leisure time even more relaxing for families.
1998 Birkis introduces the concept ‘one style – all sizes’. All models carrying this logo are available in both children’s and adult sizes.
1999 Birkis is the first shoe manufacturer to develop beach sandals and clogs made from Birki-cell, a light and robust plastic (e. g. the Outdoor-Birki).
2000 Birkis invents the aqua soft-footbed. This direct-moulding technique fuses the upper with the plastic footbed. Benefits: no solvents, longer-lasting.
Birkis creates the first individualised function models (e. g. with fold-down or removable heel straps, removable instep strap and various clip-on accessories).
2005
2006 Birkis develops the first Disney models with Mickey and Minnie, Winnie the Pooh and the heroes from Cars. The cooperation with Disney is highly successful and continues to this day.
2007 Birkis develops the soft footbed for those who prefer a softer version of the standard footbed. The special thing about this footbed is that it has a permanently elastic latex cushion, which is moulded for every size.
2009 Birkis develops the soft+base sole. With its soft absorption layer, it provides additional comfort on hard surfaces.
2009 Birkis produces the first models using the digital printing process.

2010 Birkis expands its Disney collection with the stars from the Muppet show.
2010 Birkis develops the first charity collection to benefit the DKMS Deutsche Knochenmarkspenderdatei (German Bone Marrow Donor Center). For every shoe sold, Birkis donates € 1 for people suffering from leukaemia.
2012 Birkis develops the dynamic footbed and launches the first models on the market.
2013 Marvel and Birkis sign a licensing agreement. Superheroes such as Spider-Man, Iron Man and the Hulk will now also be seen on Birkis.
We place great importance on protecting the environment: little waste, no solvents, solar technology and energy-saving production – these are the things we value. The cork for our footbeds is carefully sourced from the bark of the cork oak. The leftover EVA strips from sole manufacture are shredded and reused for children’s play areas and sports grounds.
Birkis is family-friendly: we want both little ones and grown-ups alike to enjoy their leisure time in a carefree way. Our approach is to become close to our customers and find out what their needs are. Many of our shoe designers have children of their own and so they know what’s important. They only develop Birkis that their own children would be happy to wear – of the highest quality and made with cutting-edge production technology.
