Festive France celebrates…

the Guadeloupe islands

Grande-Terre, the Welcoming! 3

This island is in large part testament to the culture of sugar cane. But for those seeking a little rest & relaxation, its magnificent white sand beaches and turquoise lagoons are sure to please, while surfers can enjoy top-notch waves. As for the numerous hotels and restaurants dotting Grande-Terre’s seaside, there is no better place to indulge in authentic Creole cooking.

5 islands, 5 experiences, 5 times the reason to celebrate!

Photo : Comité du Tourisme des îles de Guadeloupe Jean-Marc Lecerf – www.oceandimages.com

1

What exactly makes a trip to the Guadeloupe Islands such a unique experience? Perhaps it’s because there isn’t just one Guadeloupe but an archipelago of contrasts made up of five separate islands: Basse-Terre, Grande-Terre, La Désirade, Les Saintes and Marie-Galante. With a range of festive events coming up on each island, you can be sure that your visit in 2014 will be nothing short of a party!

10th Edition / Route du Rhum – October 25th - November 2nd, 2014 Taking place every four years, the most famous of Transatlantic races will depart from Saint-Malo, the legendary former city of the corsairs in France, and arrive in Pointe-à-Pitre. Photo : Comité du Tourisme des îles de Guadeloupe - Jean-Marc Lecerf - www.oceandimages.com

4

La Désirade, the Mysterious!

Also known as “the forgotten”, this island is the ideal place to just get away from it all. Stretching along 11 km, La Désirade can be explored on foot, by bike or by scooter. Her stunning white sand beaches are protected by coral reefs to the delight of swimmers and divers alike.

Basse-Terre, the Flamboyant!

Thirsty for some adventure? From the center of Basse-Terre, the imposing silhouette of the Soufrière, an active volcano, is right at your fingertips and the tropical forests of Guadeloupe National Park extend as far as the eye can see. Dotted with impressive waterfalls, the forest offers hiking trails that all are sure to enjoy.

Les Saintes, the Idyllic!

5

This archipelago is made up of 9 small islands. The best known of them is Terre-de-Haut, whose bay of turquoise waters is recognized as one of the World’s Most Beautiful Bays Bays. On the island of Terre-de-Bas, the beach of Grande Anse is well worth a visit with its white sands and tranquil waters. While you’re there, try a tourment d’amour (“agony of love”), a traditional coconut-filled cake that is sure to please your tastebuds!

Sailors’ festival - August 16th, 2014 Complete with traditional sailors’ songs and a giant banquet, a visit to La Désirade’s largest event is a great way to get acquainted with the island’s residents and traditions in a festive atmosphere.

Terre-de-Haut community festival – August 14th-16th, 2014 This three-day celebration brings the party to the beaches of Les Saintes with concerts, events, and dancing, making it an ideal occasion to experience this magical setting! Photo : Benjamin Combe

Marie-Galante, the Authentic!

Nicknamed “the island of a thousand windmills”, Marie-Galante has calm roads, diverse plant life, and white sand beaches that are among the finest in the Caribbean. Sprawling sugar cane plantations can be found throughout, and so it comes as no surprise that Marie-Galante is renowned for its rum: in fact, it is known as the “land of the world’s best rum”.
