Midi-Pyrénées A not so ordinary trip in the heart of the French South-West, in the Midi-Pyrénées region: a report of unique experiences.
Day 1 The Millau viaduct, rising above it all My journey began at the Millau viaduct, a spectacular structure which spans the Tarn river by a good 2,460 meters. Once in Millau, I was given several options to enjoy the viaduct: by foot, boat or kayak. Being more of a by-foot-kindof-gal, I laced my hiking shoes and went on a wonderful 10km walk on the edge of the Larzac plateau. I got the chance to admire the highest viaduct in the world in all its splendor. After effort, comes comfort! A short detour by Roquefort gave me the opportunity to taste the king of French cheeses, finishing off the day beautifully.

When I was offered to visit the Midi‑Pyrénées region and its Famous Sites, I was intrigued. I had heard of UNESCO listed sites, Cathar castles, the pink city, but without really knowing what to expect. From the Pic du Midi, to Rocamadour to the Millau viaduct to Toulouse and even to Cahors and St-CirqLapopie, famous Midi‑Pyrénées sites, I was blown away. Thirsty for new sensations, I surely was not disappointed. Come quench your thirst with me, as I live unique experiences during 5 unforgettable days…
Day 2 Rocamadour – Stepping in the shoes of a medieval pilgrim It is in Rocamadour that my journey continued. My plan today was to meet up with the Black Virgin, located in the Notre-Dame chapel, built in the heart of the medieval town. Somewhat worried and a little reluctant about sharing my sins with her, I began to climb the 233 steps that would lead me to her. In order to live the experience to its fullest, I climbed the steps on my knees, as our ancestors did. A couple of bruises later, there stood the frail statue, wrapped in all of its mystery. I could not help but think of Jacques Cartier on his boat, returning from Canada, imploring the Black Madonna to heal his crew, decimated by scurvy. Incredibly enough, his wish came true. He later went himself to the Black Virgin to thank her. I then went on to make a small wish of my own…

From Cahors to St-Cirq-Lapopie, a cruise down history lane...
A starry night at the Pic du Midi
Toulouse, a curious treasure hunt
After experiencing the Rocamadour and Larzac trails, I went on a river escapade. Aboard the organized cruise, I discovered a part of history. The Valentré Bridge, a Unesco World Heritage Site under the St Jacques de Compostelle roads, was the first monument to reveal itself to me. As we followed the river, the decor changed, giving us the opportunity to view charming villages and castles huddled under ocher cliffs crowned with forests. The icing on this already perfect cake was the St‑Cirq‑Lapopie village, suspended on a rock, which appeared in all of its beauty, ending my day on a magical note, a glass of the famous Cahors wine in hand.
This particular day (and night!) was dedicated to the Pic du Midi. The cableway provided at the La Mongie ski resort was an effective mean of transportation, dropping me off at the top of the observatory, at 2,877 meters above sea level. The Pyrénées mountain range offered itself to me, under the bright sun and invigorating breeze. After visiting the terraces and the museum, I was enchanted by the breathtaking sunset and one of the purest celestial archways in the world. I counted the stars before falling asleep, certain to have found paradise.
The last day of my trip was spent visiting the city of Toulouse. It was explained to me beforehand that one does not know the capital of Midi‑Pyrénées without having seen its courtyards. With this in mind, I got thoroughly lost in the maze of city streets, playing hide and seek with gardens, palm trees and fountains. Monumental gates and discrete doors gave me a backstage access to the city, leading me on a wild treasure hunt. I found the lesser-known side of Toulouse, interlaced with chartreuses, these houses with a curved facade, nestled in the back of inner courtyards.
