February 2015

By Seth Halpern Editor For decades the subject of marriage and its decline has been addressed and debated. We have seen divorce rates continue to rise and commitment to marriage continue to fall. Should we even bother to commit to the institution of marriage? The church has been fighting a seemingly losing battle for the definition of marriage. Is it one man and one woman? Can two people take a vow to love each other no matter their gender? Is it even necessary to have a ceremony and certificate if we can enjoy our relationship (and its fringe benefits) without it? These are questions that have been asked, answered, debated, and voted on. The origin of marriage, I believe, is out

of the “mind” of God. He created Adam and then the animals. When He saw that no animal complemented Adam, God created Eve. This was Adams perfect match! No Match. com or Christian Mingle necessary. The two fit together in every way and God said that it was good and that they would become one. There is a physical, sexual intention here but there is also a spiritual one. The two becoming one expressed a longing for and fulfillment of a sustained intimate relationship. It is an illustration of the Father, Son, and Holy

Spirit’s relationship as One as well as the relationship of God with each of us. This is something that cannot be undone (even though we try). Divorce was not an option initially. Jesus said that Moses allowed divorce because of the hardness of people’s hearts. Even after the beautiful first “match”, trouble would come in the form of sin. Sin always takes our eyes off of God as well as the other person and puts our vision on ourselves. Our nation and each state has been dealing with the issue of gay marriage. As I asked earlier, shouldn’t it be ok for two people who

love each other to marry, despite their gender? 37 states have answered that question in the affirmative, with more states on the way. California has been in a long-time legal battle over the issue. But we didn’t get here overnight. The institution of marriage has been ailing for decades. We watch Celebrities enjoy extravagant weddings only to be divorced in a matter of months. Movies and TV depict casual sex as a pursuit with little interest in the commitment of marriage. This is the example we are shown from childhood. It should not surprise us when it turns into reality. Adultery has become commonplace. Divorce is now celebrated as liberty in many cases. Co-habitation is expected and even considered wise as

INSPIRATION LOVE’S CHOICE

By April James I love that the Lord gives us choices. Sometimes I think it would be easier if we didn’t have so many, but he wants us to love him by choice not because of a requirement. There is a quote from Richard Bach, “If you love someone, set them free. If they come back they’re yours. If they don’t, they never were”. Mr. Bach’s quote is not exact in our context with the Lord - for we are His creation, yet the Lord has set us free to make our own choices, including loving and serving him or not. Even though His desire is for all of us to come to him, to love and know him on a personal level, He doesn’t force us, yet he gently calls to us… My child, My child, My child. This is not just another day; it is a new day, a day I have made. Where will you be in it? By my side? Doing your own thing? I desire that you do not miss out on what I am doing. Do not slumber or sleep, be vigilant

with eyes and hearts focused on me, that I be your God, the desire of your heart this day, the love of your life. Come draw in, taste and see My goodness, the sweetness of a life surrendered to Me – lived in My presence. Separate from those things that hold you captive, that keep your mind occupied and off of Me. Come away with Me to that secret place, there you will find rest, there you will find Me. Hear My words, My child, see My hand stretched out towards you, place your faith and trust in Me. I am your good heavenly Father; I have good plans for you. I desire that you turn from the corruptible to receive of My eternal riches. Know Me, Know My Son, know My ways and My heart for you, as you have never know before. This is a day of victory for lives lived out in Me. It is an individual choice each of us make, yet our choice influences those around us, Joshua declares in Joshua 24:15 “…as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” A friend of mine, Kathleen Prout, adds - “And as Peter (said), “to whom else can we turn?” Only Jesus. It’s always only Jesus. So help us, strengthen us, be with us. We open our hearts to you. You alone are our certainty.”” As we begin this day - what choice will be made?

Love is Kind By Paula McBride Hogar Para Ninos, Vicente Guerrero, Mexico The table was tastefully set for four with plates, cups, forks, and a teapot. Teacher Stacy was nearby, overseeing the area where our young English language learners were playing. One child offered Stacy a pretend cup of tea, then moved over to stir some imaginary soup. Another found the fake eggs, sunny side up, and put them on a plate. Another found the fake potato chips and proudly let us know she knew their English name. I decided to put something more “tasteful” on the plastic plates. “Cookies,” I thought. The secret stash was near my desk. I placed a cookie on each of the four plates, and almost immediately the treats were snatched up and consumed. The cookie on Mia’s plate was not grabbed nor consumed by her. Instead, the precious seven-year-old gave her cookie to Teacher Stacy without hesitation. I was blown away by that incredible act of kindness, and yes, I did give Mia another cookie! Acts of kindness are frequent at the mission and in our surrounding community. One of our boys uses a walker, and his friends often help him with his backpack or by bringing the walker to him when it is time to leave the room. Often when I drop something, several kids will dive to the floor to pick it up. The little kids love to give Stacy and me bougainvillea petals from the trees outside our classroom. Best of all are the hugs we get all through the day. In the

community, we often see an older child with an arm around his younger sibling. The other day, a driver stopped her car and waited for me to cross the street when the right of way was hers. Doing acts of kindness is second nature for some. Perhaps it is learned in the home by observing parents who are kind. Others of us have to work at it or have a holiday to remind us to send a card or give a gift. Perhaps kindness was not modeled for us as we were growing up, and every day we have to be intentional about the words we speak, the gentleness with which we act, and the selflessness with which we give. As we yield our lives to Jesus and become more like Him, we grow in kindness. Jesus showed kindness to children, prostitutes, tax collectors, impulsive fishermen, and murderers. Who can we show kindness to this Valentine’s Day? A widowed friend thinks she might enjoy receiving flowers, something living. A single friend thought a meaningful card would be nice, something that recognizes that she exists and has worth. Another friend who will be spending his first Valentine’s Day since the death of his loved one just wants a hug and a shared memory. Can you imagine visiting the rescue mission or a prison and sharing kindness there? This Valentine’s Day, let’s love well, not just in a romantic way or in our own little comfort zone, but in the way of Jesus because “love is kind” (I Corinthians 13:4).

This Month:

Love, Infatuation, Addiction, Novelty...

Is love a feeling? Can we trip and fall out of love? How would you define love? The greatest commandments both command us to love: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-39, paraphrased) But if we really don’t know what love is, how can we do it? Often we think of love as that ‘funny’ feeling you get when you are extremely attracted to someone else. But, if that were true, then we wouldn’t be able to love all our neighbors! Since our feelings are temperamental and so easily variable, we would be in and out of love on an hourly basis. In 1 Corinthians 13, we read about the attributes of love: patient, kind, not easily angered, keeps no record of wrongs, etc. These are the ways love appears. However, if I am patient with someone, it does not necessarily mean I love them. This would be expressing a ‘loving’ gesture. Truthfully, love is a choice. It is a choice to dedicate yourself to promoting the good of a particular person. God loves us. He is always focused on our best

interest, and in doing so, brings Himself glory. God does not fall out of love with us. He doesn’t grow apart from us. We don’t have irreconcilable differences with God. It sounds so funny but that is the truth of unconditional love. Thus, we choose who we love. We cannot choose who will love us. Typically, it is very obvious if someone is truly loving another person. The focus of their behavior is for the greater good, rather than self. Marriage can be defined as an unconditional commitment to an imperfect person. A commitment requires choice. God chooses to love us. God also demonstrated His love, and Jesus showed His love for us in that while we were in our deepest sin, He died for us (Romans 5:8, paraphrased). Jesus was committed to love. The world will know we belong to God by our love for each other (John 13:35). You can evaluate your commitments, as well as those who profess to be committed to you. We then compare our commitment to that of Jesus, and ask The Holy Spirit to fill us with His love. It is through the outpouring of that Love that we love one another!

While the proms are free and open to those who fit the age requirements, guests will be welcomed to a red carpet entrance where they will be greeted by a buddy who will individually host each participant. Tebow’s foundation will also provide free hair and makeup, flowers, professional photography, food, dancing, games and more at the event where guests can also receive a crown or tiara in a special ceremony. The proms will take place simultaneously in churches across the country on Feb. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. While the foundation sought to have 50 churches around the country participate, at least 23 signed on from various cities last Oct. Tebow spoke about the excitement surrounding the event that will take place Valentine’s Day weekend. “We are so excited to be able to create this opportunity for thousands of people around the country with special needs,” Tebow said in a statement released from his foundation. “This event perfectly fits our mission to bring faith, hope and love to those needing a brighter day in their darkest hour of need.” Tebow wants people to focus on the

“Tax Tips” Brought To You By Ad Lucem Tax Services With ever increasing taxes, people want to know how to make tax time less taxing. In the following months I will be giving some common sense tips on deductions you can claim and what records you will need to keep to prove those deductions, as well as other topics. God wants us to pay our taxes. Jesus said “Render to Caesar what is Caesar’s”. However, good stewardship of His provision would call for wisdom and care in not paying more than we are required. One of the key numbers you will need to know is your Adjusting Gross Income (AGI). It is used to limit or eliminate a number of deductions. AGI in tax-speak is basely the difference between your gross income and your adjustments. Gross income is your all your taxable income, including, but not limited to: wages, tips, commissions, bonuses, unemployment benefits, social security benefits, interest, dividends, pensions, gambling winnings, prizes, gains on the sale of assets, (e.g. house, stocks or bonds), profits on a business, farm & rentals as well as any miscellaneous income you may receive. Generally, proceeds from insurance or inheritances as well as fringe benefits are not taxable.

The most common documents to prove income are W-2s and Form-1099s. The law requires that anyone who pays you taxable income (above certain amounts) is required to give you one of these forms. Please keep these forms and give them to your tax preparer at tax time. Adjustments are deductions that Congress allows to be subtracted from gross income before calculating AGI. The most common adjustments are: contributions to a traditional IRA (the beauty of this deduction is that you can make the contribution after the tax year ended and still be able to claim the deduction for the previous year.) You have until April

15, 2015 to contribute up to $5,500 or if age 50 or over, $6,500 and still claim on your 2014 tax return), college tuition & fees (if not claimed as a tax credit), moving expenses (if you move for a new job), student loan interest, and alimony payments (taxable income to the receiving spouse). The documents you should keep to prove these deductions are invoices or other receipts showing the expense, copies of checks & credit card statements showing payment. Generally, you should keep these documents for up to three years in case you are audited or need to file an amended return.

Intero Real Estate Services is fairly new in our community. Owners Ernie and Donna Phelan started Pride Real Estate years ago and recently bought into a franchise of the large and wellknown Intero business. Although, Intero is one of the largest and busiest real estate service businesses in California, you wouldn’t know it by the intimate and calm office environment. That likely comes from the top down. I had a chance to sit down with one of our most recent Ambassador sponsors to find out what makes them “tick”. What I found was a couple who are real! Real in their faith in Christ; real in their commitment to their employees and real in the character of doing business. A fifth generation Californian, Ernie was born and raised into a farming & ranching family. He was driving a bank out wagon when he was 10 (he had to explain to me what that is!) His parents took him to church but their home didn’t provide much of a faith-filled upbringing. Still at a young age, Ernie accepted Jesus into his heart. He didn’t live for Christ until later. Donna moved to Colusa County at 12,but was raised without any faith influence. The two met on a golf course 27 years ago and began a relationship. After getting married and with the birth of their first child, Donna felt the need for something more and began attending church. Shortly after, she invited Ernie and the two have never

donna and ernie Phelan looked back. Ernie became an elder at Colusa Presbyterian Church eight years ago and continues today. The two are involved in a variety of ministries and Bible studies to not only grow in their own faith but mentor others. After working in the farming/ranching industry, the Phelans subdivided some of their property, worked with a builder and went into the real estate sector. It was a natural transition and they started Pride Real Estate in 2002 When Donna is not working on learning and growing personally and professionally, she is passionate about health and well-being and is concerned with the typical American diet. Ernie who is very well read, finds himself (like others) gravely concerned about the moral decline and erosion of the family in our nation. When he finds the time, his other interests include cooking and gardening. Inspired by people who see the greatness in others and those who are willing to take

the lead in standing for their convictions, Ernie and Donna put a great emphasis on genuineness and authenticity of character. When not enjoying their children and 15 month old grandson, Donna is working to make herself and her community around her better. She was the last person awarded the Colusa County Business Woman of the Year in 2007. Today she continues her work as president of the

Colusa County Chamber of Commerce as well as president of the Community Foundation of Colusa County. Ernie is involved in Young Life, AWANA’s, and teaching adult Sunday school. Wanting to bring ministry to Yuba-Sutter, Ernie is now leading a weekly Bible Study at his Intero office. While employees are invited to the afterhours Bible Study, he also invites others in the real estate industry, including competitors! I sat with Ernie and Donna for nearly 90 minutes and would not have learned of their accomplishments if I had not pulled it out of them. Although they started Pride Real Estate in 2002 before merging with Intero this past year, pride is not something that they exude. They are confident, hard-working, and successful, but I did not see an ounce of selfish pride in them!

It starts with adults who are concerned enough about kids to go to them, on their turf and in their culture, building bridges of authentic friendship. CBA MARKETPLACE MONTHLY

“Another Invitation?”

The Christian Business Alliance started over 17 years ago. (Founded in November of 1997) Since that time it has undergone several changes in board members, in general memberships and in the meeting format itself. But one thing that has never changed is the focus of challenging lukewarm, compromising Christians to sell out to Jesus Christ! The greatest hindrance to advancement of the Gospel of Jesus Christ doesn’t come from atheists, agnostics or people of other faiths. It comes from people who call themselves Christians but live lives that misrepresent Jesus Christ. One of the most valuable things that we possess is our testimony about how Christ has changes our lives. We are not only grateful for salvation, but we recognize that His Holy Spirit comes to live inside of us and to teach us how to live righteous satisfying lives or as John 16:13 puts it: “to guide us into all truth.” We are surrounded by family members, friends and co-workers who are

struggling to find meaning in life and our secular world is leading them in the wrong direction. Jesus said this in John 8:31b-32 …“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Jesus says that he is “truth” (John 14:6). Therefore knowing Truth is knowing Jesus. My job and your job (as Christ followers) is to point people to Jesus (to the truth that will set them free from whatever holds them in bondage). So, back to the CBA. We exist to bring unity to the body of Christ. We exist to encourage each other to live for him 24 hours a day, 7 days a week especially in the marketplace where we spend most of our waking moments. We meet on Tuesdays at noon at a variety of locations in the Yuba Sutter area. Contact Seth Halpern at editor@ambassadornewspaper.com to be included in the weekly email reminders. If you would like to experience the peace and transformed life that God can provide through Jesus Christ and you are willing to commit your life to the only one who can truly set you free from your sin, you can pray to the Lord right now and ask Him to forgive you of your sins. Because of what His Son, Jesus, did by dying on the cross, your sins will not be held against you by God anymore. You can experience freedom for the rest of your life on earth and then have a life in Heaven with God for eternity. God’s part of the deal is already done. Your part is to confess your sins, repent (or change your ways) and believe that He is Lord. If your life is out of control, let Him take over control. Valentine’s Day, Every Day Sheri Mueller Growthtrac.com The other day a friend expressed deep sadness. She shared with me that Valentine’s Day is the only day her husband remembers to give her a card and flowers — The rest of the year she receives nothing. I was deeply saddened. It occurred to me this annual event might be the only day they celebrate their love. And it struck me this may be true for other couples as well. Jim and I have experienced many stages of marriage. Our first years were pure wedded bliss; everyday was a honeymoon. Then reality set in. We soon discovered it was hard work to keep romance alive, especially after our children arrived. Lack of time for each other seemed to be our biggest obstacle. We both felt romance should be automatic and spontaneous, except that wasn’t reality for us. As unromantic as it sounds, we’ve found that romance requires planning and a constant, compassionate focus on each other. I love my husband today with more passion and depth than the day we were married. I love his heart for romance in our marriage. Most importantly, he makes me feel cherished. Here’s what works for us… Scheduling and Intentionality

I know Jim often enters reminders on his phone so he remembers important dates or needs prompting to send me flowers. I appreciate that he makes that effort, even though to him, this lacks the spontaneity he sometimes desires. For myself, I have to plan things out weeks and weeks in advance. The anticipation of surprising him is worth every moment of planning.

connects us to each other and to God. This is the deeper, fuller, richer intimacy God intends for us to share. Serving Have you ever thought of making breakfast for each other? If cooking is not your specialty, ordering out from a local restaurant is something Jim has done. I don’t mind that he can’t cook — I appreciate that he made the effort

Words and Touch Do you tell your spouse you love them everyday? In the midst of your busy schedules, do you kiss each other when you leave the house in the morning? Do you embrace when you come in the door at night? Physical touch and simple, loving words connect us; it reminds us we are important to each other. Prayer and Intimacy Reading a daily devotional and spending time in prayer at bedtime brings us closer and initiates discussion after a long day. Even though Jim is fighting off sleep (and I could go on for hours), it still

to surprise and serve me. Many Sunday mornings I make him homemade waffles or French Toast. The true way to his heart is food — especially chocolate chip cookies. Doing these things is a very simple way of serving him. I’m putting him first… Before myself. God called us to serve one another in love (Galations 5:13). He also warns (Galations 5:15) that “biting and devouring each other” will destroy us. No wonder so many relationships are in deep trouble. Our first human response is selfishness. We think of ourselves before we think of the lifetime partner God has

given us. If we put God first in our lives and then our spouse, a marriage can grow in unimaginable ways. Getaways Jim and I are refreshed most when we take getaway weekends. When the kids were small, sometimes it was only a night or afternoon away. Today our getaway goal is several times a year. It is a time to get reacquainted with each other and remember why we fell in love to begin with. It helps us leave all the stress of home behind and just have time to focus on each other. We have often made major decisions about marriage, ministry and family during these times together. Are you up to the challenge? Start with a Valentine’s Day once a week. Go out for a cup of coffee, to a movie, or dinner together. Eat Order-in pizza over a tablecloth on your bedroom floor. Lock the door and tells the kids you can’t be disturbed for a half-hour. Many couples are opposed to having a TV in the bedroom, but cuddling in bed while watching a movie can be lots of fun. It doesn’t have to be an expensive evening. Be creative! The love the Lord blessed you with should be celebrated more than once a year. Valentine’s Day should be every day.

Planned Parenthood Aborted 327,653 Babies in 2013, Received Over $528 Million in Federal Tax Dollars Near Record-Breaking $127.1 Million Profit By Samuel Smith, Christian Post America’s largest abortion corporation, Planned Parenthood, recently released its 2013 annual report that shows the organization conducted more abortions than it did the previous year, despite the fact that the abortion industry as a whole is seeing a steady decline in the number of abortions. The 2013-2014 annual report states that Planned Parenthood Federation of America aborted 327,653 babies in 2013, which is nearly 500 more abortions than the group conducted in 2012. Although the abortion industry has seen a decrease in profitability in recent years, considering the fact that 73 abortion clinics closed down in 2014 and about 75 percent of abortion clinics in the U.S. have been closed since 1991, Planned Parenthood has seemingly been unaffected by the trend as the report reveals that the organization took in a near-record breaking $127.1 million profit in 2013. Senior policy advisor for the Christian pro-life activist organization Operation Rescue, Cheryl Sullenger, told The Christian Post that Planned Parenthood has been able to stay out of financial troubles due to the fact that the organization received over $528 million, or $1.4 million per day, in taxpayer funds from the U.S. government in 2013. “The big picture is that abortion numbers are sinking to record new lows and that is because of the abortion clinic closures,”

Sullenger said. “Unfortunately, Planned Parenthood has an artificial money stream that comes into their organization from the United States government to the tune of about a half a billion dollars a year.” Although the Hyde Amendment, which was made law in 1976, clearly forbids the federal government from giving any tax dollars to fund elective abortions, Sullenger said that Planned Parenthood is able to receive federal tax dollars because of the other services it offers. “They say that the money doesn’t go to abortions. It goes to other services,” Sullenger explained. “But frankly, it goes into a general fund, and the money gets spent for whatever they need it to be spent for. I think it is disingenuous to say that they have segregated the federal tax dollars.”

Sullenger further noted that about 70 percent of Americans oppose using tax dollars to fund Planned Parenthood. Although Planned Parenthood offers other services like cancer screenings, adoption referrals and contraception services, the report found that abortions made up 94 percent of Planned Parenthood’s pregnancy services in 2013. The report explains that for every one adoption referral Planned Parenthood made in 2013, the corporation performed 174 abortions. Additionally, Planned Parenthood adoption referrals dropped 14

percent that year, while the organization’s cancer prevention services dropped by 17 percent. The group’s parental care services and contraceptive services also dropped, both by a 4 percentage point margin in 2013. “In 2013, Planned Parenthood upped the number of abortions they performed to 327,653. Meanwhile, their already limited cancer screenings, prenatal services, adoption referrals, and even contraception services, continue to drop,” president of the pro-life nonprofit Susan B. Anthony List, Marjorie Dannenfelser, said in a statement issued to CP. “Planned Parenthood claims to be an altruistic healthcare provider for women and girls, but their bottom line is all about abortion.” Jim Sedlak, vice president of the Catholic grassroots pro-life organization Amercian Life League, told Life News the report indicates that Planned Parenthood isn’t in business to help families, but rather to simply make money. “The new Planned Parenthood annual report shows one thing — Planned Parenthood is all about the money, not healthcare,” Sedlak said. “This report demonstrates that Planned Parenthood has hit a roadblock in its efforts to entice the American public to use its so-called health services.”

IN THE NEWS DELAWARE GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES CHARLES DARWIN DAY Carrie Dedrick | Editor, ChristianHeadlines.com Citizens in Delaware will observe “Charles Darwin Day” on Feb. 12 after an official declaration of the state holiday by Gov. Jack Markell. Charles Darwin was the scientist who introduced the theory of evolution, or how organisms change over time. Feb. 12 was Darwin’s birthday. The Huffington Post reports that Markell said evolution is “the foundation of modern biology, an essential tool in understanding the development of life on earth” and the holiday would be “...a time to reflect and celebrate the importance of his scientific achievements.”

The holiday was requested by a member of the Delaware Atheist Meetup group; according to state law, Delaware organizations have the right to request recognition for a day, week or month. Some groups first began observing Charles Darwin Day in 1980. Two liberal lawmakers have proposed legislation to create a national holiday but were not successful, despite some interest from Democrats.

World Has Moved Closer to Apocalypse, Says Bulletin of Atomic Scientists By Leonardo Blair , Christian Post Reporter The Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, a group founded in 1945 by University of Chicago scientists who helped develop the first atomic weapons in the Manhattan Project, warned last week that the world has moved much closer to an apocalypse. “Today, more than 25 years after the end of the Cold War, the members of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists Science and Security Board have looked closely at the world situation and found it highly threatening to humanity — so threatening that the hands of the Doomsday Clock must once again be set at three minutes to midnight, two minutes closer to catastrophe than in 2014,” wrote the board which includes 17 Nobel laureates in a memo addressed to “Leaders and citizens of the world” published in the Bulletin last Monday. The bulletin created the Doomsday Clock two years after the formation of the group using the imagery of apocalypse (midnight) and the contemporary idiom of nuclear explosion (countdown to zero) to convey threats to humanity and the planet, according to the group’s

website. “ The decision to move (or to leave in place) the minute hand of the Doomsday Clock is made every year by the bulletin’s Science and Security Board in consultation with its board of sponsors, which includes 17 Nobel laureates. The clock has become a universally recognized indicator of the world’s vulnerability to catastrophe from nuclear weapons, climate change, and new technologies emerging in other domains,” it claimed. “The science is clear: Insufficient action to slash worldwide emissions of greenhouse gases can p r o d u c e global climatic catastrophe. Even a socalled ‘limited’ n u c l e a r w e a p o n s exchange will produce massive casualties and severe effects on the global environment. We implore the political leaders of the world to take coordinated, quick action to drastically reduce global emissions of heat-trapping gases, especially carbon dioxide, and shrink nuclear weapons arsenals,” argued the memo. “We also implore the citizens of the world to demand action from their leaders. The threat looms over all of humanity. Humanity needs to respond now, while there is still time,” it added.

A.D. BEYOND THE BIBLE Miniseries Mark Burnett & Roma Downey Address TV Critics, Talk About Their Faith By Ben Kayser, Managing Editor, Movieguide.org Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, the creative visionaries behind the popular 2013 miniseries, THE BIBLE, are seeking to continue that success with A.D. BEYOND THE BIBLE. Airing on NBC, BEYOND THE BIBLE is a 12 episode series that debuts April 5, 2015. It follows the events that take place after the crucifixion of Jesus and the conflict revolving around the Christians and the beginning of the church. At the Television Critics Association (TCA) 2015 Winter Press Tour, Mark Burnett, Roma Downey and several cast members held a Q&A session for the press and presented some footage of A.D. The session started on a light note as Mark Burnett was asked about his new bushy beard and Roma, Mark’s wife, added that it made him look more “contemplative.” Although the TCA crowd is critical by nature (because they’re critics and journalists), both Roma and Mark were very upfront about their faith as the backbone for bringing this series to the small screen. “Every decision in my life big or small always includes a prayer,” Roma said, adding, “There was a lot prayer in casting the series.” When asked about racial considerations in casting historical First Century people, the answer always came back to casting the best actor for the role. Mark added, “This is a story that millions have died for and billions live for. In the end, it comes down to the best

actors for the roles. “We even have an Irish guy,” he joked. Juan Pablo Di Pace, who was cast as Jesus, talked about the responsibility of the role, stating “It’s a huge responsibility. Very few people have had the chance to play him. I come from a Christian background. My mother is a religious painter. My name actually comes from John Paul II. I’m absolutely humbled to be playing Jesus. It’s definitely changed me as a person.” When discussing what the series means to the actors, Chipo Chung (Mary Magdeline) mentioned the social aspect. “It was about social change,” she said, “about how a small group of people changed the world. The times they lived in were completely brutal.” “At the end of the day, it’s about hope and love,” Adam Levy, who plays St. Peter, said with conviction. Mark Burnett stressed he hasn’t received anything but support for A.D. BEYOND THE BIBLE. He added that Roma and he are very excited to see it premiere on Easter weekend. “We are people of deep faith,” Mark said, “and we believe God’s hand is all over it and intended it to be [aired] on Easter Sunday.” Roma reiterated the viewers’ desire for this type of spiritually uplifting, inspiring, faith friendly programming. “We just know there’s a hunger for this type of material,” she said. “People are hungry for hope.” Mark also talked enthusiastically about the signs and miracles that happened on set, including the clouds that appeared in the shape of a cross, which even stopped the production for a moment.

TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE... - CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 a “trial run” as if test driving a new car. Beyond that, less accepted (at least for now) is polygamy, open marriages and even (and I’m not kidding) Biological fathers and daughters dating and marrying!! No, the institution of marriage seems to be living in the nursing home of the “old school” most likely rooming with Chivalry and Manners. So, the looming question may perhaps be “Is Traditional Marriage Worth Saving?” The short answer is YES. Just as God created bodies of men and women to fit together for the purpose of reproducing, so, he has established marriage for the His purpose of relating to us and us to each other. It is no coincidence that generally all cultures in all of recorded history have accepted traditional marriage as its norm. Likewise, there have always been people in those societies who have been different (sometimes through no fault of their own, other times as a result of sin).

Yet, their differences have not become the norm in society. We might think we are a progressive society for normalizing unbiblical and godless behavior. We will pay a great price as a nation if we continue down this road and do not take steps to restore the institution of marriage. The moral fabric of our culture is in serious decline. As the family goes, so goes the nation. With it will come our national destruction if we, the American people and more importantly, we the Church do not hold up the primary symbol of the family, Marriage! (Note: If you are in a struggling marriage, or if you are concerned about the institution of marriage and want to be part of the solution, contact Bill Jens of the Yuba-Sutter Healthy Marriage Project at 530-218-2903. EDITORIAL STATE SPONSORED SIN By Jon Skillman Did you know that The California legislature cranked out hundreds upon hundreds of bills last year? This avalanche of bills flows across the governor’s desk and into law with little consideration of impact upon those beyond the scope of the bill. One such bill that became law January 1, 2015 is AB1678. This little gem adds the classification of “LGBT” (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) to the list of minority owned businesses now called; “The Women, Minority, Disabled Veterans and LGBT Business Enterprise Procurement.” This means that state utility providers such as PG&E, ATT, Verizon and others must afford LGBT owned businesses the same perks offered to other “minority” owned businesses. To my knowledge, this is the first time a business owner’s lifestyle must be considered when contracting for goods and services. I can kind of see the reason for, but don’t necessarily agree with the need to classify business ownership by ethnicity, gender, race or disability… but lifestyle? Really? An article titled, “LGBT-owned businesses get diversity boast,” tells of a Mexican-American woman whose consulting firm has taken advantage of programs aimed at helping minority and women owned businesses compete for government and corporate contracts. And now, thanks to AB1678, her being a lesbian gives her another leg up on the competition. And, because the 2016 Super Bowl is being held in California, the NFL must also play the diversity favoritism game. According to the article, a gay San Francisco photographer, hired by

the NFL, said: “It’s like when they are going through the bids—this one is woman owned and this one minority owned—it helps you stand out a little bit more. I never thought that my being gay would open any doors.” I must admit…neither did I. Call me old fashion but if I’m looking to contract with someone for goods and services I prefer to base my decision on…oh I don’t know… honesty, reliability, competency and ethics rather than on the owner being gay. Am I saying LGBT owned businesses aren’t honest, reliable, competent and ethical? Absolutely not! I’m saying it is not the state’s business to promote or sanction what God has defined as sin. 1Corinthians 6:9-10 says: “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolater nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the Kingdom of God.” The phrase “homosexual offender” means practicing or unrepented. But the good news follows in 1Corinthians 6:11: “And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit of our God.” In other words, none of these sins are beyond the Saving Grace of God. But I fear the state’s good intentions are leading LGBT to eternal damnation, and our tolerance and/or silence makes us complicit, and calls us also to repentance.

The Good Lie I missed the movie “A Good Lie” when it was in theaters but I did get to see it recently on DVD. I expected a lighthearted “fish out of water” film about a few men who came to America as Sudanese refugees and how they find their way in America. What I got was a whole lot more. If you have not seen it, I don’t want to spoil it for you. You simply need to see it. Although, Reese Witherspoon stars in the movie, it is clearly not about her character, but instead about the 3 men and one woman who survive unimaginable tragedy from childhood, but grow in grace and character when their lives change for the better. The men lived many years in a Kenyan refugee camp. They are among the 20,000 Sudanese children known as the Lost Boys of Sudan who saw most of their family killed in the nearly 20 year Civil War which ended in 2005. The main takeaway from the film for me was the message of endurance, and love through sacrifice. Although I thoroughly enjoyed watching the movie, it was afterwards that I was really moved. It was then that I pondered the sacrificial decision of the men and saw how you and

Seth Halpern - Editor I really can live out the example of Christ in our own world. The faith, commitment and sacrificial love shown by Theo, Paul, Jeremiah and especially Mamere were touching and inspiring. On a side note, the actors playing the roles of Jeremiah and Paul know firsthand of the experience their character faced. They were real life refugees of Sudan’s brutal civil war and were forcibly recruited into becoming child soldiers. I rented this from Redbox. I would highly suggest you do the same but I do need to caution you that there is some very disturbing brutality early in the film which depicts the horrors these people have endured.
