INSPIRATION Thoughts for Thanksgiving By James McAlister
In an era not so long ago, our country was being ripped asunder by internal turmoils and differences—much as it is today. Yet even in the midst of the darkness of civil war, Abraham Lincoln cast a ray of hope that the nation might once again have “full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.” We would do well to review some key thoughts of Lincoln’s proclamation of October 3, 1863, which set the precedent for our national Thanksgiving holiday. “The year that is drawing towards its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God . . . . “Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defense, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore . . . . No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. “It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens . . . to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions

justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience . . . fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.”
As in Lincoln’s day, our nation’s deep wounds beg to be healed. Peace, harmony and tranquillity cry for restoration. Our moral compass pleads for calibration. Perhaps it is time to move our Thanksgiving holiday beyond feasting, fellowship and football. Perhaps it is time to embrace Lincoln’s advice to observe a “day of thanksgiving and praise. . . . with an attitude of humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience”? The results might be surprising—and enduring.

A Thanksgiving Parable By Paula McBride
One Thanksgiving, a generous benefactor favored his community by hosting a lavish banquet. He rented a large hall, advertised widely, and hired professional chefs and wait staff. He spared no expense in his effort to bring his community together for a day of grateful celebration. Anyone willing to attend received an engraved invitation to the free event. On the day of the banquet, the earth garbed itself in brilliant sunlight and color. The hall filled with guests of every age and social station who mingled expectantly while locating their seats. A hush settled as the benefactor gave his welcome address, offered a prayer of thanks, and instructed his guests to eat to their hearts content. Pleasant chatter erupted again. Some of the guests gazed at the table decorations. They didn’t seem to see the food. “Oh, what lovely china and crystal!” a young mother exclaimed. “That centerpiece is exquisite,” offered a gentleman. Another guest remarked,” The candlelight glimmers in the crystal.” Oohs and aahs echoed all around, but those guests never ate a bite. Others criticized everything. The turkey was dry, the dressing had raisins, and the sweet potatoes didn’t have enough brown sugar. The green bean casserole was cold. The hall was dim in the candlelight. These guests ate, but not with satisfaction or gratefulness.
Others devoured the food as if they’d never see more. They choked and gagged on enormous unchewed bites. Stomachs filled to discomfort rather than satisfaction. Yet there were guests who gratefully honored their host by filling their plates bountifully and savoring every bite. “We must be loved very much to be treated to this feast,” a curly-haired preschooler announced. The guests around her nodded in agreement. Their mouths were full, but eyes glimmered with satisfaction and appreciation. The benefactor surveyed his guests from his place at the head table. He leaned over and spoke quietly to his son, “This is how it is in my kingdom, Son. Some don’t see it, some complain about it, some dive in and later burn out. Blessed are those who honor and respect what I’ve provided. They are completely satisfied in me.” Yes, this story is a parable. Have you discerned the deeper meaning beyond the fanciful words? We know that the benefactor is God the Father, and the “invitation” echoes Christ’s fervent appeal during His earthly life for all who will to “Come!” We are the guests, and the feast is glorious participation in God’s kingdom here on earth while we wait for the grand wedding supper of the Lamb in heaven. Are we on the fringes of the kingdom as spectators? Are we grousing about our lot in this life? Did we once enter heartily into kingdom living only to burn out when satisfaction dimmed? Or do we live in honor and respect for our Benefactor who delights us with His riches? Are we completely satisfied in Him? We don’t have to wait for November 22 to express our gratefulness. Our lives can radiate “thanks-living” as we express aloud the benefits we enjoy as children of God’s kingdom. Then as we feast on Thanksgiving Day, we will be fully satisfied.

Reformers Unanimous

I grew up in a non-Christian home. My parents stayed married until I was 12. I was the middle girl of 3, and we had a younger brother. My dad was an addict my entire childhood. Although we weren’t Christian, I know that The Lord was working on my mom and dad. My mom was able to get support from a local church and got my dad into an AA in home rehabilitation clinic. But it was too late. Addiction had already taken our family from us. My parents got divorced about 2 years after my dad got sober. The divorce was devastating for all of us. I was always considered the angel of the family. I was the only one of us girls to graduate from high school. I had the reputation of being the “good girl”, but I never felt good enough. I didn’t want to be the angel anymore. Every time I would do something bad and get caught, my family would make excuses for me, so I never had to take responsibility. I was a cheerleader, in the popular crowd and partying on weekends but managing to still get good grades. I attended 2 years of college with dreams of being an elementary school teacher. At the age of 19 I was pregnant with my first daughter, and by the time I was 25 I had my third child. I married my kids’ dad in 2000. During the years of my pregnancy and having the babies, i felt needed and “good enough”. But
that didn’t last. By the time my youngest son was 2, I was taking medication, drinking, and smoking to self medicate. I was unfulfilled with my life. I was 28 years old, and had the life that every girl wanted, and I was miserable. My marriage was over by the time I was 30. I met Andy in January of 2007. He led me to The Lord May 5, 2007. I thought that after I got saved that life would be easier. I didn’t know about the attacks that the enemy was about to take on my life. I ended up back in my addiction, but this time it was worse and more destructive. I almost lost my children. This is when The Lord stepped in and I could no longer deny Him. I came home to Andy (the man that is now my husband). That day he told me I needed to go to see our pastor. That day I drove to our church and told my pastor that I needed help. I was willing to give my decisions to God and listen this time. Within 2 weeks, I was in Illinois in the Reformers Unanimous Ladies home. The faith based ministry, focused on recovery through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. My church family supported the financial needs to get me through the program. I got there May 7, 2009 and graduated in October 4, 2009. I came home and on December 20, 2009, married Andy, the man that led me to The Lord and stood by me through many trials. We were blessed with a baby girl in November 2010. The
Lord gave me the tools I would need not only to stay sober, bur also to live a life pleasing to God, that would in turn, bring the peace that I had been searching for my entire life. While I was in Illinois, the Lord told me that this ministry was a calling on my life. I had to bring it home with me. After much prayer, and waiting on His timing, God sent our church Pastor Brown. He also has a heart for the addicted. And on August 3, 2012, God allowed me to be a part of our first Friday Night Reformers Unanimous Meeting at our Church. Our Pastor believes that The Lord is going to do amazing things through this ministry. Just in the first 6 weeks, we have seen 3 people saved! We are also seeing spiritual growth and blessings in the lives of the students and workers. The Lord used this ministry to change my heart, and my desires. I know the trials will come and I know I’m never alone. I’ts not my strength that gets me through the struggles, it’s His strength. I’m so thankful, nearly 3 years later I am serving The Lord with my life. I can never give Him enough afer everything he has done and continues to do in my life. He’s allowed me to be a leader with the ladies in Reformers, I’m a bus captain for my church, and in our church choir! I am a changed life only because He loves me. I’m not giving up. He’s done too much and I believe His promises that He will continue to do more with me as long as I’m living. I’m so thankful and am praying that The Lord will continue to allow me to serve Him in this Blessed Ministry.
If you would like to experience the peace and transformed life that Justina did and you are willing to commit your life to the only one who can truly set you free from your sin, you can pray to the Lord right now and ask Him to forgive you of your sins. Because of what His Son, Jesus, did by dying on the cross, your sins will not be held against you by God anymore. You can experience freedom for the rest of your life on earth and then have a life in Heaven with God for eternity. God’s part of the deal is already done. Your part is to confess your sins, repent (or change your ways) and believe that He is Lord. If your life is out of control, let Him take over control. A Poisonous Recipe: How to Destroy Your Church By Scott Brown , CP Guest Contributor Here is a step-by-step recipe I have seen work successfully over and over again throughout the course of my life. I share this dangerous recipe today so that when you identify these poisonous ingredients in your life, you will know what you may be inadvertently stirring up. 1) Be a whisperer. Proverbs 16:28: “A perverse man sows strife, And a whisperer separates the best of friends.” 2) Allow your tongue and the tongues of your family members to run unbridled. James 3:5-8: “Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” 3) Hold others to a higher standard than yourself. Proverbs 11:9: “The hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor.” 4) Assume the worst of others. Psalm 41:7: “All who hate me whisper together about me; they imagine the worst for me.” 5) Listen to rumors against others.Proverbs 17:4: “An evildoer gives heed to false lips; A liar listens eagerly to a spiteful tongue.” 6) Repeat every rumor you hear. Proverbs 17:9: “He who covers a transgression seeks love, But he who repeats a matter separates friends.” 7) Forget that you were forgiven much and demand that you are treated
perfectly. Matthew 18:27-28: “Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt. But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’” Be warned though. Following this recipe always calls the judgment of God down on the heads of those who use it. And tragically I have seen some of the sweetest people’s lives destroyed by this poison being stirred up in their homes. And, some of the happiest churches have been crippled and even destroyed by it. Psalm 101:5: “Whoever slanders his neighbor secretly I will destroy. Whoever has a haughty look and an arrogant heart I will not endure.”

By Travis Dodds On Oct 20th, A Woman’s Friend Pregnancy Resource Clinic held their annual Fall Benefit Banquet. Best-selling author Dr. Bruce Wilkinson was the keynote speaker. The Banquet is one of the biggest fundraising events for A Woman’s Friend, along with the Walk for Life in the spring. This year’s twenty-fifth anniversary Banquet received commendations from former California State Senator Doug La Malfa and State Assembly member Jim Nielson. About four hundred and fifty people in addition to AWF staff, volunteer tech crew, servers from Faith Christian High School and Dr. Wilkinson and his staff were in attendance. Carol Dodds, Executive Director of A Woman’s Friend had this to say about the 2012 Banquet: “We are deeply humbled by God’s gracious blessing on the ministry. This was our most successful banquet ever, in part due to Dr. Wilkinson’s anointed gift of speaking the truth in love. I found that his compelling message seemed to come straight from the Holy Spirit.” Dr. Wilkinson was extremely convincing, and very blunt with the truth about the ministry and our ability to support it. He swayed us all to realize that, even if we think there is nothing to give, we can always give in some way. One of the most compelling and impactful parts of his presentation consisted of a statistics exercise and audience participation. Dr. Wilkinson showed us that if you look at the estimated fifty-five million surgical abortions since Roe V. Wade forty years ago (an estimate that does not include abortion pills or numbers in California and New Hampshire, who refused to present their numbers), that number of deaths would completely obliterate whole populations of twenty-five well-populated states. Having presented this information, he had all audience members stand who were born, or had a parent or grandparent who had been born,
in those states. Over half of the audience was brought to their feet. Dr. Wilkinson ended his presentation with a clip from the end of Schindler’s List, in which Schindler looks at his possessions and thinks of the people that the money for those items could have saved. This was certainly applicable to our situations and, as a result, many in the audience gave their jewelry out of a lack of money. The powerful message that Dr. Wilkinson presented to attendees of the Banquet was not only impactful on donor’s hearts, but also essential in spreading the message of the pro-life cause in Yuba-Sutter. “A Woman’s Friend is crucially important because it is the center of the culture of life in our community.” These words certainly ring true in the ears of those who want to further the cause. Thanks to Dr. Wilkinson’s powerful message, the donation results were phenomenal. Now, AWF will be able to establish a new Mobile Medical Unit, which will allow them to bring their services out into the community. My

“Too Few In Pews” Says Pew By Jon Skillman
According to a recent study compiled by the Pew Research Center, the number of non-religious Americans is on the rise.” The study also states that the number of Protestant adults has fallen below 50% for the first time in U.S. history. While these facts don’t really surprise me, they do sadden me. The study goes on to say that this anticipated drop come at a time when no Protestants are on the U.S. Supreme Court. No real surprise here either. The study points to a growing number of nondenominational Christians who don’t fall under the Protestant umbrella, along with a spike in Americans claiming no religion at all, as possible reasons for the decline. The Pew study points out that American voters having no religion, overwhelmingly vote Democratic. What else is new? Well, Pew points out that the non-religious support abortion rights and gay marriage at a much higher rate than the U.S. population at large. Again, what’s new? Pew then states that the religious unaffiliated are becoming as important a constituency to the Democrats as evangelicals are to the Republicans. Do you have to pass a test to be a researcher? Pew says that researchers have struggled for decades trying to determine a definitive reason for the steady rise in those of no religion. And now, religious scholars say the decreased religiosity in the United States, could reflect a change in how Americans describe their religious lives. P-EW…this study really stinks. It states obvious facts but somehow misses the obvious conclusion. Researchers have struggled for decades to determine why America is becoming more secular? Really? Religious scholars think it’s simply a matter of religious definition? Can no one see the forest for the trees? Have our scholars and researchers become so smart that they think beyond the obvious? Now I’m no researcher, and I’m far from being a scholar, but I think I’ll take a wild stab at this apparent conundrum.

It seems to me, if you teach secularism (for decades) in the public schools, does it not follow that children with a public education just might turn out to be secular? I’m just saying. And, if you remove God from the public square, does not the public square become Godless? When our entertainment industry mocks Christianity and glorifies immorality, does that not breed immorality? Not really much to research here. Not much to study either. It really comes down to: What you sow, so you shall reap. Pretty simple…simply logical...simply obvious…but unfortunately for America, it’s simply too biblical.

Halloween has just passed and the stores are already well stocked for the Christmas season. It’s disheartening to me that Thanksgiving gets mostly overlooked. With the exception of turkeys on sale at grocery stores, the November holiday serves more as a day to prepare for Black Friday sales. Of course, it’s almost unpatriotic to not love the gluttonous feast and day of football. Our American culture is typically not one of thankfulness but more of entitlement, so I asked readers to send in their notes of thankfulness. The highlight for us as followers of Jesus should not be just to enjoy the 4 day weekend but to celebrate what most of us celebrate every Sunday (no, not football!). We are thankful to the God who gives us life and forgiveness of our sins. Many of us take too much for granted. A year ago, for the first time, I found that my breath in this life could end quickly, as I prepared for emergency open-heart surgery. The recovery was difficult and I am still dealing with some of the issues, but a year later, I have seen that God must have had more for me to do. I have not seen God “part the waters” in all of my healing, finances or relationships, but the quiet miracles happen every day when I’m quiet enough to listen.

If you wait until tomorrow, you’ll forget. He does a lot of “little things”- giving wisdom in conflict, a few extra miles before needing to stop for gas, the smile and hug of your child or grandchild, the list is truly endless if we listen and watch. I encourage you to take Kathy’s advice and write them down. Thankfulness will begin to flow out of you even when there’s no pumpkin pie! Let’s bless the Lord and go from one day of Thanksgiving to a lifetime of Thanksliving!

We have to reflect to see the bigger picture, not the one we would have devised for ourselves, but the one our Heavenly father ordained.
