HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines) fired an evenpar, 72, in Sunday’s final round of the 2017 Alex Lagowitz Memorial to lead the Seton Hall men’s golf to a fourth place team finish.

SOUTH KENT, CONN. – Junior Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines) shot evenpar or better in all three rounds as the Seton Hall men’s golf team finished second at the 2017 Hartford Hawks Invitational on Tuesday.

Nagai was fueled by five birdies in round three and finished the tournament tied for 16h place with a 7-over-par, 75-76-72-223.

Nagai was consistently brilliant, tying for sixth place among 116 individual players with a 4-under-par, 71-69-72-212. Nagai’s 4-under-par matches his career-high, and his sixth place finish is the fifth top-10 of his career.

Par 72 – 16 Teams Competing

Overall, the Pirates climbed one spot to finish fourth in the 16-team standings. The Hall shot a 14-over-par, 302, in Sunday’s final round to finish at 33-over-par for the tournament with a 292-303-302-897. North Dakota State won the team title at 20-over-par. The top Pirate performer for the weekend was junior Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.), who tallied a 2-over-par, 74, on Sunday. Yeom had three birdies, but was plagued by a +3 on the par-4, 10th hole, the same hole that stymied Nagai in the first round yesterday. For the tournament, Yeom tied for fifth with a 3-over-par, 75-76-72-223. It’s Yeom’s first career top-5 finish. Freshman Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) finished his first collegiate tournament tied for 22nd overall with a 10-over-par, 73-76-77-226. Senior Linus Yip (Sydney, Australia) tied for 35th overall with a 13-over-par, 71-79-79229, while freshman Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) rounded out the Pirates’ team scoring with a 24-over-par, 81-79-80-240. Sophomore Alex Chalk (Castle Douglas, Scotland) and Alex McAuley (Douglas, Isle of Man) each had strong tournaments while competing as individuals. McAuley was consistent throughout the tournament and finished with a career-best 7-over-par, 7574-74-223, to tie for 16th overall. Chalk tied Tait for 22nd place with a 10-over-par, 78-69-79-226.

Par 72 – 20 Teams Competing

Collectively, the Pirates jumped two spots in the team standings to finish in second place with a 3-under-par, 286-284-291-861. The Hall’s 4-under-par, 284, in round two is tied for the seventh-lowest, par-72, single-round score in Pirate history. UCF won the team title at an impressive 28 strokes under par. Seton Hall’s lone BIG EAST competition in the field, St. John’s, finished a distant 61 strokes behind The Hall. Junior Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) also turned in one of his finest collegiate performances. He finished just two strokes behind Nagai with a 2-under-par, 72-72-70-214, matching his career-low tournament. Sophomore Alex Chalk (Castle Douglas, Scotland) finished the fall’s second tournament tied for 27th with a sound 2-over-par, 72-71-75-218. Alex McAuley (Douglas, Isle of Man) bounced back nicely after a disappointing second round. The sophomore finished his second round this morning with a 7-over-par, 79, but rebounded with a 2-over-par, 74, in the afternoon. For the tournament, he was 8-over-par with a 71-79-74-224. Freshman Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) finished with a 15-over-par, 80-7279-231 to round out the team scoring. Senior Linus Yip (Sydney, Australia) turned in a strong effort while competing as an individual. Yip tied Chalk for 27th place at 2-over-par with a 72-71-75-218. Freshman Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas), also an individual, shot a 16-over-par, 76-74-82232.

BRIDGEPORT, W.VA. – Junior Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) turned in a career-best 3-under-par performance to lead the Seton Hall men’s golf team to a 10th place finish at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational on Tuesday.

BEALLSVILLE, MD. – Junior Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) collected his third top-10 finish of the fall and helped lead the Seton Hall men’s golf team to a third place team finish at the 2017 Georgetown Intercollegiate.

Yeom finished a strong second round today, before beginning his third round. The result was a pair of 2-under-par, 70’s, the eighth and ninth sub-par rounds of his collegiate career. Yeom’s final round featured a bogey on the 11th hole, but birdies on holes No. 6, No. 12 and No. 18. He finished the tournament tied for third among 84 individual golfers with a 3-under-par, 73-70-70-213. Marshall’s Alex Weiss won the individual title at 8-under-par.

Yeom shot a 4-over-par, 75, in the final round on Tuesday to finish in eighth place among 60 individual golfers. For the three-round event, he shot an 8-over-par, 74-72-75-221. Yeom finished just two strokes behind six golfers who tied for first place at 6-over-par.

The performance is Yeom’s second straight sub-par tournament, sixth career top-10 finish and second career top-5 effort. Collectively, the Pirates shaved 10 strokes off their first round score in round two, but gave five back in round three. The Hall finished 10th in the talented 16-team field with a 24-over-par, 301-291-296-888. Bowling Green State won the team title at even-par. There were no other BIG EAST Conference competitors in the field. Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) turned in the best performance of his young career this tournament. The freshman finished his second round with a career-best 3-under-par, 69. He followed it up with a 1-over-par, 73, in round three. Tait finished the three-round event tied for 27th with a career-best 5-over-par, 79-69-73-221. Junior Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines) was consistent throughout the tournament. This morning he closed out a second round 73 before shooting a 3-over-par, 75, in round three. For the tournament, Nagai tied for 37th place with a 6-over-par, 74-73-756-222, just one stroke behind Tait. Senior Linus Yip (Sydney, Australia) finished up his tournament with an 18-over-par, 7679-79-234, while sophomore Alex Chalk (Castle Douglas, Scotland) recorded a 28-overpar, 78-88-78-244.

Collectively, Seton Hall shot a solid 15-over-par, 299, in round three, but due to strong rounds by Georgetown and Rutgers, it fell to a third place finish. For the tournament, the Pirates were 46-over-par with a 306-293-299-898. Georgetown won the team title, only four strokes ahead of The Hall, while the Scarlet Knights finished just one stroke ahead for second place. It’s the Pirates’ third top-5 finish in four tournaments so far this fall. The top Pirate for the day was junior Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines), who shot a 1-over-par, 72. Nagai tied for 10th place with a 10-over-par, 78-73-72-223. One of the players tied with Nagai was freshman Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England), who was consistent throughout the tournament, finishing with a 10-over-par, 75-7375-223. It’s Tait’s first career top-10 finish, and Nagai’s seventh. Senior Linus Yip (Sydney, Australia) tied for 36th place with a 19-over-par, 80-75-77232, while freshman Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) rounded out the Pirates’ team scoring with a 26-over-par, 79-81-79-239. PALM CITY, FLA. – Freshman Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) shot a 1-under-par, 71, in Tuesday’s final round to claim the individual championship of the 2018 UNCG / Martin Downs Collegiate. Despite a record-tying team effort, the Pirates finished second in the team standings.

GOODYEAR, ARIZ. – Junior Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) and senior Linus Yip (Sydney, Australia) spearheaded an assault on the Seton Hall men’s golf record books as the Rio Verde Intercollegiate completed play on Monday.

Tait was dominant, shooting under par in all three rounds to win his first collegiate individual championship in only his sixth career tournament. He became the first Seton Hall golfer to win a title since Lloyd Jefferson Go claimed the Princeton Invitational last spring, and only the 11th Pirate to win an individual title all-time.

A day after shooting par or better on all 36 holes, Yeom completed his historic tournament with a 4-under-par, 68. The junior registered six birdies on the afternoon, and two bogeys, his only two of the entire tournament. For the event, he placed sixth with a Seton Hall record-breaking 13-under-par, 66-69-68-203. His 203 breaks Lloyd Jefferson Go’s par-72, three-round score of 205 set just last spring at the same event. Furthermore, Yeom’s 13-under-par score ties former Pirate Kyle Morris for the most strokes under for any par in a single tournament. Morris set the record at the Treasure Coast Classic nearly 11 years ago.

For the tournament, Tait shot a 9-under-par, 67-69-71-207, to best West Virginia’s Matthew Sharpstene by two strokes for the title. His 9-under-par score is tied for the third-most strokes under par in a tournament in Pirate history. Furthermore, Tait’s 207 is ties Go for the second-lowest tournament par-72 score ever at Seton Hall. Collectively, Seton Hall sparkled on the course again in round three, finishing with a 3-under-par, 285. However, the Pirates were caught by West Virginia, which shot a spectacular 12-under-par, 276, in Tuesday’s final round to claim the team title by two strokes over The Hall. The Pirates finished in second place, two strokes ahead of host UNC-Greensboro and six strokes ahead of Elon. Despite falling short, Seton Hall’s three-day effort was historic. It finished with an 11-under-par, 287-281285-853, which is the lowest par-72, three-round score in Pirate history. The Hall’s 11-under-par score ties for the most strokes under par ever at Seton Hall. Senior Linus Yip (Sydney, Australia) turned in his second straight sub-par round to finish the tournament. He had three birdies and 13 pars in route to a 2-under-par, 70, in round three. For the three-day event, Yip tied for 12th place overall with a 2-under-par, 75-69-70-214. It’s Yip’s first career sub-par tournament as a Pirate. Ever consistent, Chris Yeom (Flushing, N.Y.) shot an even-par, 72, on Tuesday, to register his fourth top-10 finish in six tournaments so far this year. The junior completed the three-day event with a 4-under-par, 70-7072-212, to tie for eighth place among 69 golfers. It’s the fourth time Yeom has broken par for a tournament, and his 4-under-par is a career-low.

It’s Yeom’s fourth sub-par tournament of the year, after not having registered a single sub-par tournament as a freshman or sophomore. Five of his six tournament rounds so far this spring have been under-par. Remarkably, Yeom finished four strokes behind Harvard’s Ambrose Abbracciamento for the individual title. Still, his sixth place finish is the ninth top-10 of his career, which ranks 10th all-time at Seton Hall. Not to be outdone, Yip didn’t have a single blemish in his third round, and rode seven birdies to a career-best 7-under, 65. His 65 ties Go for the lowest par-72 single-round score in Seton Hall history. Go set the record two years ago in his Callawassee Island course record BIG EAST second round. Yip had two rounds under par for the tournament, and finished with a career-best 5-under-par, 71-75-65211. He tied for 24th place overall, registering his second straight sub-par tournament to begin the spring season. Senior Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines) also put in a career-best effort for the tournament. Today, he turned in his third straight sub-par round, using four birdies and an eagle on the par-5, 11th hole to fuel a 3-under-par, 69. Nagai ended up tying for 15th place among 107 individual golfers with a career-low 8-under-par, 68-71-69-208. His 208 is the fifth-lowest par-72 three-round score in Seton Hall history, bested only by Go twice, Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) last week and Yeom in this tournament.

Junior Gen Nagai (Mandaue Cebu City, Philippines) improved for a second day on Tuesday, shooting an evenpar, 72, on the strength of four birdies. For the tournament, he tied for 28th place with a 4-over-par, 75-7372-220.

With so many individual standout performances, naturally several team records fell at the Loyola Intercollegiate as well. Only 24 hours after the Pirates set a new team record for the lowest par-72 single-round score with a first round, 277, they did it again today with a 15-under-par, 273.

Sophomore Alex McAuley (Douglas, Isle of Man) shaved off two strokes each round, settling with a 1-overpar, 73, in round three, the third-lowest round of his collegiate career. For the three-day event, he shot a 9-over-par, 77-75-73-225.

Seton Hall finished the tournament in seventh place at an astonishing 24 strokes under par with a 277-290273-840. The result shatters Seton Hall’s previous records for most strokes under par for a single tournament (11) and lowest par-72 three-round score (857).

Sophomore Alex Chalk (Castle Douglas, Scotland) and freshman Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) also made the trip and competed as individuals. Both players shot a 3-over-par, 75, in Tuesday’s final round. For the tournament, Acevedo finished with an 11-over-par, 76-76-75-227, while Chalk was only one stroke behind with a 12-over-par, 77-76-75-228.

Amazingly, scores were significantly low across the field. The College of Charleston won the team title at 48-under-par with a 270-276-270-816. In a nice tune-up for the BIG EAST Championship later this spring, Seton Hall bested three other conference schools in the field. DePaul finished at 8-under-par, St. John’s was 2-under-par and Xavier was 1-under-par. In all, 16 of the 19 schools in the field shot under par for the tournament.

2018 big east championship scorecard third round

third round scorecard

After a pair of uncharacteristically high rounds, Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) enters the offseason on a good note. The freshman had three birdies on the day in route to a 1-over-par, 73. For the tournament, he placed 25th with a 17-over-par, 81-79-73-233. Finishing the tournament only one stroke behind Tait is sophomore Alex Chalk (Castle Douglas, Scotland). Chalk didn’t record a score higher than a bogey on any hole in round three, but saw his share of bogeys during the day. However, Chalk parred four of the last five holes to finish with a 6-over-par, 78. For the three day event, he was 18-over-par with an 83-73-78-234.

4

yeom

Yeom’s fantastic year can’t be overstated. This week’s performance is his eighth top-10 finish in 11 tournaments in 2017-18. This spring alone, 10 of his 17 rounds were under-par, giving him a total of 14 sub-par rounds for the entire year. Perhaps most impressive, Yeom’s 71.66 stroke average for the year, edges Lloyd Jefferson Go’s program record for a junior by just .01.

This was the fifth straight year that the BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship was held at Callawassie Island Golf Club. Seton Hall’s 902 this year was better than the 911 in 2014 and 910 in 2015, but only slightly worse than the 901 in 2016 and the even 900 shot last spring.

3

nagai

Marquette’s Hunter Eichhorn won the individual title at 2-under-par.

As a team, Seton Hall put forth a strong effort in Tuesday’s final round, but their deficit was too much to overcome. The Pirates posted the third-best final round score, a 6-over-par, 294, their best round of the tournament. The Hall finished fourth at 38-over-par with a 310-298294-902. Georgetown won the team title at 20-over-par, just three strokes ahead of 2017 champion Marquette. DePaul finished third only two strokes ahead of the Pirates.

SETON HALL IN THE BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP Seton Hall has won two BIG EAST team championships since the inception of the league tournament in 1979. The Pirates won titles in 1992 and again in 2000. The 1992 team, coached by Allan Small, shot a 622 to better Connecticut and Providence by one stroke at the Tournament Player’s Club in Avenel, Md. NCAA HISTORY

SETON HALL GOLF AT THE NCAA’S The Seton Hall golf program made four consecutive trips to the NCAA East Regional between 1998 and 2001. In 2016, Lloyd Jefferson Go became the first to qualify for the NCAA Regional as an individual. He repeated the feat in 2017. In ’98 the East Regional was held at the Daufuskie Island Club and Resort on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. The Pirates were the fourth seeded team in District 2 with Penn State, James Madison and Navy as the top three seeds. The team struggled at the regional, shooting a three round total of 929. An opening round score of 320 doomed the Pirates as they finished tied for 21st out of 23 teams. Mike Costigan led the Pirates as he finished tied for 89th with a three round score of 229. Eugene Smith finished tied for 101st with a 234, Clark Topping was 106th with a 237, Ted Durkin shot a 238, finishing 107th and Scott Hawley finished 109th after carding a 240. Although the Pirates struggled it was a great achievement for them to become the first golf team in Seton Hall’s history to reach the NCAA’s. In 1999 the Pirates returned to the East Regional for the second straight year. The Regional was held at the Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, RI. The team was the top ranked team in District 2 and was joined in the regional by Richmond, Penn State and James Madison. The Pirates earned their best finish ever in the regional, tying for 17th with the University of Maryland. Seton Hall finished third out of the District 2 teams with a three round total of 889. Smith led the Pirates as he finished tied for 43rd with a score of 220 and was followed closely by Costigan, who finished 53rd with a 221. Brian McGowan finished 72nd with a 224, Hawley shot 229, finishing 99th and Topping rounded out the scoring for the Pirates as he finished 114th with a 235. The Pirates improved their score in the Regional by 30 strokes. The 2000 regional marked the third consecutive appearance for the Pirates after the squad’s berth-clinching BIG EAST Championship victory. Clark Holle, in his first season as head coach, led the Pirates to Moosic, Pa., site of the Glenmaura National Golf Course. Unfortunately, Seton Hall never got a chance to finish the tournament, as the NCAA Golf Committee determined that six teams would be dropped after the second round because of inclement weather. The Pirates shot a 303 in the first round and 325 in the second. Smith once again paced the team with a total of 151, while Hawley shot a 157. The Pirates’ final official scoring was “Did Not Finish” but they were 24th after two rounds.
