THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JANUARY 13, 2012

Cheers to the staff at Grassroots Natural Health and Wellness. The turnaround time of tests and test results (24 hours) was a great relief and is very much appreciated. Thank you for your quick response to my health concern.

Jeers to the many employees who deliver services to our property. We are all encouraged (by bylaws) to keep our sidewalks and walkways cleared of snow and ice, just so they can walk across our lawns. This is not just a winter problem!

Cheers to the volunteers who help maintain the outdoor ice rinks around the city.

Jeers to people with colds that don’t cover their mouths when they cough.

Cheers to Formality, the new store in town. Finally there’s a place for a mother and daughter to shop for a grad dress in town.

Jeers to the cold weather. It had to come eventually, but we don’t have to like it.

Cheers to the man who pulled his vehicle over to the side of the road to send a text. People may finally be catching on.

“MWF Seeking BFF” by Rachel Bertsche (Ballantine Books, $15) Reviewed by Rose M. Croke When Rachel Bertsche

moves to Chicago to be closer to her boyfriend, she discovers over time that it is not easy making new friends. When she gets married, it becomes even harder. While she gained a husband and a new adopted hometown, she desperately misses the best friends she left behind in New York and the sense of belonging she once took for granted. After one too many Friday nights at home on

the sofa, Bertsche decides to chart a course in unfamiliar waters and dive into the world of serial friend dating. The result is “MWF Seeking BFF,” an inspirational memoir about one woman’s yearlong journey to make new friends as an adult. Brimming with friendly energy with nowhere to channel it, Bertsche develops a plan: She will go on 52 friend-dates, one per week

for one full year, with the end goal of meeting her new BFF (Best Friend Forever). She bravely puts herself out there and reaches far outside her comfort zone to get the ball rolling. Bertsche asks co-workers and acquaintances to set her up with their friends. She signs up for mixers, enrolls in a yoga class, joins an improv group, participates in a flash mob, does a dietary cleanse (!), starts a book club and takes out a want ad. She even “rents” a friend -- yes, she actually pays a girl to hang out with her. From hilariously awkward to downright

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JANUARY 13, 2012

New program co-ordinator to change attitudes toward library For the new adult program co-ordinator at the Estevan Public Library, continuing to broaden what the library does for the community is her main goal. Jill Kergan, who assumed the position in early December, said a public library is more than just a free book exchange. Originally from Moose Jaw, she went to the University of Regina finishing with a bachelor’s degree in history, before receiving her master of library science in London, Ont. From there she came back to Saskatchewan, and more specifically Estevan. “When a lot of people think of libraries, they think of books,” she said, adding that they offer much more than that, with services like free wi-fi and programming. “Not a lot of people think about programming. They think the library is for information, when really it’s a place to gather in the community and promote recreation too.” Kergan said public libraries are her main area of interest, as opposed to legal, medical or corporate. “I like the whole community aspect, and how it brings in children and older people. The community help, I like that,” she said. As the adult program co-ordinator. Kergan said her job is to identify local needs and interests and find programs or activities that meet those needs in both an informational and recreational way. She noted that involving the community in as many ways as they can is important. “There are always different things happening in the community, so if we can partner with somebody to promote that, that’s always good.” Some of the popular programs were a bit of a

Kergan said the library is more than a place to come for information, but that it’s also where people can gather in the community and promote recreation. surprise to Kergan. Hello Computer, which allows people to book 30-minute sessions to learn some basics of computing like sending e-mails or organizing folders, is one she learned had more people taking part in than she thought. “Coming in, I didn’t think that. Computer classes, really? Computer basics I didn’t think would be as popular as they are. So, you learn as you go.” The latest computer for people is the e-reader or tablet, and she noted that being aware of those trends, allows them to provide services for people who have been given an e-reader for Christmas and are figuring out how to use it. They’ll be hosting sessions similar to what they do for Hello Computer for those in February. Looking for new things to add to the library’s repertoire of activities is also important. “We’re always looking for new programs. Anything that brings people in, pretty much. It’s just a matter of seeing what’s feasible and

what people might come to.” Kergan added that part of doing that is finding people with a specific skill set or area of knowledge that might be of interest to others in the community. “You meet different people who have different hobbies. A lot of my job is finding connections. Who could come in to do this? The longer I’m here, the more people and more resources I’ll have to play around with.” Something that may make her job a little easier is the access to the library that people have with the Souris Valley Aquatic and Leisure Centre, along with Spectra Place all in one building with the library. “I like the centre. It’s nice to have so many recreational things in one place. It kind of promotes the library too, because people go to the hockey game and stop in and get a library book,” she said. “Since everything’s integrated, all the Saskatchewan libraries, they can pick up books here and return them (anywhere).”

Some of the programs coming up at the library are the Chinese New Year on Jan. 21 and a tribute to the Scottish poet Robbie Burns, on Jan. 17 when they host Who was Robert Burns Anyway? The Legion hosts the Robbie Burns supper each year. “A lot of people know about (the supper), but maybe they don’t know who Robert Burns was or why they have it.” Their event will include a multimedia presentation, poetry reading and trivia. Last weekend Kergan was invited by Robert Rooks, who has been part of organizing the local ode to Burns since it started in the 1970s, to learn how to make haggis. It was her first time tasting the Scottish dish. “I got to sample it. We just fried it because the boiling takes a couple of hours. It was kind of like a hamburger, fried, so it wasn’t too bad.” He also donated a haggis to the library for Who was Robert Burns Anyway? Other ways she noted they are trying to reach the community is through programs that aren’t necessarily in the library, like Book Club in a Bag. “(Groups) take a book club kit and there are 10 books in each kit. Even though this isn’t happening at the library, we’re trying to facilitate social involvement and community life.”

Province going wrong way with education spending By increasing funding for non-public schools, the government is effectively taking money out of public education. The provincial government recently announced upping their funding of private schools to 50 per cent per student of what public schools receive and 80 per cent to associate schools. By doing so, the government is showing a lack of interest in improving the public school system. These others schools should certainly be allowed to operate, but they shouldn’t be funded by the public. When the government supports a school of religion, whether it be Catholics or Jews or Muslims, they give the impression it’s best that these groups have a school that is exclusive to them. That’s the exact opposite of what is in the best interests of the public, which should be the top consideration of government. What is best for the public is to have its children go to school in an environment that welcomes everybody. Public means for everyone, and the money being distributed to these specialty schools

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers should be going back into the public system because there is always something that can be done to help the public schools. I recall a rift between the teachers and the government just a few months ago, in which the teachers worked for most of a year without a contract. A little extra money in education’s rainy day fund might have quelled those labour negotiations a little quicker. Instead of classes being cancelled for strikes, the school year could have run uninterrupted. I remember when John Tory, the head of the Ontario Tories in 2007, suggested during his provincial campaign he would favour the government supporting schools of all faiths in the name of fairness, since Christian and Catholic schools

were already getting money. Not only was that ridiculous, but a better campaign promise would have been to suggest a cancellation of the money being handed down to any non-public school boards. That’s exactly what Saskatchewan should be doing. We should move away from exclusive schools, and put our efforts into the public system that is welcome to and accepting of everybody. The province should be politely telling these non-public school boards to prepare themselves, because in five years they won’t be seeing any more tax money. There just shouldn’t be taxpayer support behind an institution that isn’t available to everyone. To say that the government can’t strip these institutions of money because it was ingrained into the system when the country was being drawn up 150 years ago, is a poor excuse to keep funding around for private schools. It is maybe saying too much to send these schools off cold turkey, but the process of weaning them off the public dollar can begin anytime. It’s long overdue.

Delicate balance between farmland and conservation As grain and oilseed prices have climbed to near record levels across the entire range of Prairie-grown crops, there is a lure for farmers to turn every acre of land possible into crop land. In general terms, that makes sense, since producers want to cash in on the high prices. However, there is a downside to the decision to claim lands that have previously been left as wetlands and tree bluffs, and that is the impact on the natural biodiversity of the Prairies. When wetlands are drained, wildlife suffers. Over the years we have seen that impact grow. It doesn’t take long when you are driving around the country in the spring and summer to recognize the duck population is not what it once was in farmland areas. Ducks need potholes and sloughs for nesting, and every time a wetland is drained, it impacts their ability to do that. It often sends paired ducks to smaller water puddles, like accumulations in ditches, which in turn dry up, and leave the young vulnerable to predation. Of course a slough is not only home to ducks, but to a range of wildlife, from other water birds, to salamanders and snakes and frogs. Interestingly, anecdotally I must say, there seems to be fewer frogs around these days too, although admittedly I don’t go looking for them like I did as a youth. Trees too, offer wildlife a home, and we

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist have seen more and more of those cleared over the decades. It’s to the point where even planted windbreak rows of trees have been bulldozed away in order to salvage a few more acres of land. In general terms, many of the bluffs left behind when the land was initially cleared are there because of stones, or low spots, which means they were not seen as ideal farm land. Higher grain prices at times like we have now - and in the past - justify the need to generate more gross dollars to pay bills, and this has pushed farmers to claim the marginal areas. You can’t blame farmers for attempting to infl uence their bottom line in a positive fashion. But there is the question of maintaining a level of biodiversity as well. We, as a society, should see value in being able to take a drive and see a family of ducks, and for our grandchildren to still be able to go and catch frogs. The problem is that wooded areas and wetlands generate to returns. In fact, some farmers might argue the cost in relation to the fact wildlife can impact crops

by eating them, and land close to a lot of trees must battle the extensive root system of those trees for moisture and nutrients. So a growing question is: how do we create a system whereby farmers save fringe areas from the plough? For some it’s a case of raising cattle. Fringe land is still good for grazing, and cattle can replace grazers such as buffalo in an ecosystem that still allows other livestock to thrive. But not every wood lot or slough is reasonable to become pasture either. There needs to be an element whereby society takes on some role in ensuring such lands are protected, most reasonably through some form of tax incentive. It would seem wildlife-sustaining land could be allocated an annual value (think of it as a low level of rent), which on lands approved, those with significant wildlife value, farmers could receive a cut in taxes, a program cost shared by the two senior levels of government and farmers. It could be administered through the existing crop insurance structure. Sadly, saving wildlife land, while a priority for groups such as Ducks Unlimited, the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation and a few others, it does not seem to be high on government lists, so progress on smaller areas of wildlife-suitable land seems limited. Let’s hope there are changes for the conservation of natural ecosystems and for the wildlife inhabitants.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JANUARY 13, 2012

No, I don’t like this As I’ve said many times before, I spend much of my free time creeping around on Facebook. And that’s how this story begins, with me waking up to my Josh Ramsay ringer Monday morning at 7 o’clock and rolling over to check Facebook on my phone. As I was scrolling through my news feed, I came across a relationship status change, with several “likes.” Like any good snoop, I moved my thumb to click the link to see who had liked this new relationship. And I accidentally liked the comment myself. Panicking, I quickly unliked the status. And lay there staring at my phone, terrified. What had I done? Would everyone who liked that status before me receive a notifi cation letting them know I had also liked it? If they did, they’d definitely know that I was creeping. And then what would they think? Many of the likers I didn’t know, but one I did. What would she say? And the person whose relationship status

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me changed; what would he say? Man, I felt awkward and I wasn’t even out of bed yet. I wish I could say this is the first time this has happened to me, but it’s definitely not. The worst thing is that I always accidentally like something when I’m super obviously creeping. Like when I’m sliding through profile pictures. It’s pretty clear that I’m creeping on someone when I like a picture posted in 2006. Or when my Internet lags while I’m scrolling down the page and I click on something thinking it’s something else. For example, I once tried to click on the name of one of my close friends, and accidentally liked a status talking about how someone’s beloved pet had died. Whether or not I unlike it, the petless person got a notification letting her know that I am a heartless, terrible person.

Plus, I swear I always accidentally like something on the profile of someone I don’t actually talk to in real life. There aren’t many people like that on my Facebook, but like everyone, I’ve got a handful of people who I don’t actually know, and keep around because they’re entertaining/insightful/post funny pictures of themselves. It’s always stuff on these profi les that I somehow end up liking and feeling like a moron. And whether or not I unlike it after my mistake, I always imagine the person’s face when they stare at their computer screen and think, “Why the heck did Tonaya Marr like the album of photos taken with my grandma at Christmas?” I can’t be the only one who does this... right? Tonaya Marr sometimes introduces herself to people as Tomaya Narr. It’s really confusing for everyone involved. If you also have trouble in social situations, e-mail Tonaya/ Tomaya at tonaya.marr@ gmail.com or send her a tweet @tellemarr.

ANSWER: Although I can’t give you 100 percent assurance, I can say on solid ground that you have benign positional vertigo, BPH. Vertigo is dizziness. BPH is not an inner-ear infection. It comes on just as you have written, with a change in the position of the head -- lying down, turning to the side or looking up to a cupboard shelf. The attacks are brief but disrupting. Crystals normally found in one part of the inner ear have migrated to another part. Moving the head activates the displaced crystals, and they send a message to the brain that brings on dizziness. The inner ear is not only for hearing; it’s also for balance. You can bring the crystals back to their original site through a series of movements called the

Epley repositioning maneuvers. Sit on the side of a bed and bend your head to the shoulder on the side that triggers dizziness. Let’s make it the right side, so you can follow the instructions. If it’s the left, just change the direction. With the head turned to the right, lie down so your head projects off the other side of the bed. When dizziness stops, turn the head to the left side, with the left ear facing down. Next, roll over on your left side so the head faces down for 10 to 15 seconds. Finally, return to the sitting position with your head bent slightly down in front. You might have to repeat the procedure more than twice. If this is too confusing, have your family doctor or an ENT doctor put you through the motions. The booklet on vertigo explains the common causes of it and their treatment. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 801W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75

U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Why doesn’t the heart ever get cancer? I’ve never seen this question asked or talked about on TV. Blood feeds tumors, so it makes sense that the heart would be a target. -- C.V. ANSWER: Tumors do arise in the heart. A somewhat-common benign tumor is a myxoma. It can disrupt the flow of blood through the heart. Malignant cancers, ones that spread and grow rapidly, also arise in the heart. They are quite rare. A rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant tumor of heart muscle. The blood contained in the heart doesn’t feed heart muscle. If it did, we’d never have heart attacks. Heart muscle is nourished by its own arteries. So are heart tumors. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. What overused words of 2011 should be banished for 2012?

He He She She Said By: Jordan Baker

Lake Superior State University released its annual banished words list, comprised of words that are nominated for their misuse, overuse or

uselessness. We don’t think they should have a monopoly as the word police, so here are a few other words that we should be freed of in 2012. Occupy made the LSSU list, but it should have placed in the No. 1 spot. You could occupy everything in 2011, not just Wall Street. Rather than boycotting a product, a group could Occupy the retailer. Don’t like that the new iPhone only makes calls if you hold it a certain way? Occupy Apple. Occupy was a huge story in 2011, and now occupy has picked up more connotations than it had in 2010. And it should be banished for that. You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing about occupy, as it became the new word for protest in a year defined by the cri de coeur. Time magazine even elected The Protester as its person of the year in large part because of Occupy. Hearing the word grew tiresome, whether you supported the movement or thought the occupiers should get jobs. Honourable mention goes to Dream Team. There were two in 2011, with the silver-medal-winning Miami Heat and the absolutely underachieving Philadelphia Eagles. It’s time to end the dream teams, and just let play prevail. Finally “planking” must go. It’s not so much the word that is the problem, but more that it’s the one thing that will make people who look back on 2011 say, “What were people thinking?”

• There’s a reason most refrigerators have more than one crisper drawer. Some items need to be stored separately. For example, keep apples and carrots in different compartments. The apples give off a gas that can give the carrots a bitter taste. • Here’s a great tip from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals: During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of

cars. They can be hurt or even killed by the starting of the motor. Before you start your car in the morning (or any time of day, really) give your hood a nice, loud rap to give the cat a chance to escape. • “To keep melting snow, mud and leaves out of your house and off of your floors, line a wide, shallow box bottom with plastic wrap or a kitchen-size garbage bag. Place the lined box near the front door to hold dirty shoes.” -- R.I. in Ohio • Apply lemon juice to the cut surface of an apple to prevent browning. • “Mix some salt with a little bit of water and rub the mixture over your hands for

The words, or phrases, that I would ban this year are actually the stupid, childish things I say myself. 1) Like. I mean, like, how annoying is it when you, like, talk to other people, like, like this? No one sounds polished or professional when they use “like” as a buffer between words. 2) I heart. No, you have a heart. You may like something, and you may love it. But you definitely don’t heart it. 3) Epic. An epic is a lengthy poem about heroes and legendary figures. It is not your night out at Boston Pizza and The Beef. It is not the sandwich you just made. Unless you tell a 10-minute story about the making of the sandwich, and that sandwich won many challenging battles and saved an entire village. Otherwise, just a sandwich. 4) Legit. So often I use this to describe something that I thought was really great. Like a fantastic play during an athletic event, or when I truly ace an exam. But to be legit, something must conform to the rules. So legit doesn’t really fit in either of these situations. 5) Bieber fever. Justin Bieber has been around for a while now. He definitely has crazy fans. But I doubt many of them have actual fevers in the sense that they have a medical condition. Also it’s really annoying that we seem to need to rhyme everything.

Therapy anytime, anywhere tested at U of R A new project for online therapy services organized by a professor at the University of Regina is for new people to give the pilot program a chance. The three-year project led by Dr. Heather Hadjistavropoulos, a psychologist at the U of R, is entering its second half and they are accepting applications from across the province to take part in the roughly 12week process. Those who do become clients work through 12 modules on the program’s website and exchange weekly e-mails with their therapists. Marcie Nugent, online therapy co-ordinator, said the research project is based on programs originating from the Swinburne University of Technology in Australia. It’s now part of the National eTherapy Centre Down Under. “They’ve integrated it to be part of their healthcare system. We’re not sure if folks will respond the same here,” Nugent said. That’s what they’re going to find out. The Online Therapy Unit for Service Education and Research (USER) is the name of the new

health unit that is designed to provide cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) through trained therapists. The program has received $500,000 over three years from the Saskatchewan Health Research Fund and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The program is partnered with the programs in Australia, and it is pursued here largely due to a “personal interest” of Hadjistavropoulos’s, said Nugent. Online sessions can be beneficial for a number of reasons. Nugent said most importantly it is convenient because the client and therapist do not have to be logged in at the same time. “It’s for people who work during the day, and the service is (typically) provided during the day. (The online therapy) allows people to do it at anytime,” she said, adding that if 2 a.m. is the best time to contact your therapist, you can send an e-mail and they can respond when it suits them. She said clients can send as many e-mails as they want to their therapist, but they will usually get a response once per week.

Geography also plays a role in whether or not the program is found to be helpful. In a province like Saskatchewan, where some services are spread out, taking therapy sessions online would cut down on travel time if there isn’t a service readily available in one’s community. Since it started in June 2010, 91 people have en-

tered into the pilot project. Most have completed the 12 modules and about 30 are currently receiving treatment. For those who have completed the program, there is a follow-up, so their therapist will check in on them to see how they are progressing. Individuals who have completed the program have also been able to give

feedback on the program, which has so far been favourable. “All the feedback is very positive. If it continues then we’ll be looking at a very positive outcome,” said Nugent. The 37 active therapists were trained specifically on how to use online CBT, and are either clinical psychology doctoral students or mental health therapists in the Regina Qu’Appelle and Five Hills Health Regions. There is separate training for online therapy,

but Nugent said it is very similar to face-to-face counselling. “It’s really translating skills into print. All the therapists have been trained to be in person. This is training for a different modality.” Those who would like to try the therapy sessions are asked to contact Nugent at 306-337-3331 or by e-mailing online.therapy. user@uregina.ca. An interview will be done over the phone to find individual eligibility. They will be accepting clients to 2013.

small office in Toronto that employs about 10 people. *** PENTICTON, B.C. Penticton, B.C. is one of the 10 best places in the world to visit, according to a survey of Facebook users by the online publication The Huffington Post. The publication says it analyzed more than 200 million comments and other travel references on the social network site to come up with the list. The article says Penticton — nestled in the Okanagan Valley about a five hour drive east of Vancouver — is becoming a year-round vacation hot spot with its beautiful beaches, a burgeoning wine industry and many outdoor activities. Portland, Oregon, and Charleston, South Carolina also made the list, along with cities in Spain, Columbia, Bolivia, Estonia, Croatia, Vietnam, and Laos. *** OTTAWA - New Democrat MP Lise St-Denis jumped to the Liberal caucus in the House of Commons today, citing policy reasons. “I am in the Liberal party because its direction on social policy, on job creation, on external affairs and on the environment appears to me as being able to generate hope for all people living in communities in my riding,” the backbencher told a news conference. Liberal interim leader Bob Rae and Quebec caucus president Denis Coderre welcomed the new recruit. “This is a decision based on principles and values,” Coderre said. Rae said jumping to the third party from the Official Opposition can hardly be seen as opportunism.

INTERNATIONAL WARSAW, Poland The memorial site of Auschwitz-Birkenau says it saw more than 1.4 million visitors in 2011, a record high for the former death camp. The figure released Friday underlines how the death and labour complex that Nazi Germany built in occupied southern Poland during World War II has become one of Europe’s most visited Holocaust remembrance sites. While the large number of visitors is seen as important for Holocaust education, mass tourism there is also adding strain to the barracks and other structures. Many are already in a state of severe dilapidation due to the passage of time, and the officials overseeing the site are struggling to preserve what they can. *** MONTREAL - A Rwandan man who has fought for years to stay in Canada is making a last-ditch legal plea to stave off deportation. Leon Mugesera’s lawyer was in Federal Court Monday seeking a judicial review and a delay of Thursday’s scheduled expulsion. The Quebec City man is accused of helping to incite Rwanda’s massacres by delivering a 1992 speech that

promoted the genocide of ethnic Tutsis. Hutu-backed militias led the 100-day massacre of Tutsis and Hutu moderates in 1994, killing between 800,000 and one million Rwandans. Mugesera has lived in Quebec since 1993 and says he fears for his life if he is returned to Rwanda. He is demanding that any allegations against him be heard in Canada. *** LONDON - Britain’s government says it will give Scotland the power to hold a binding vote that would give it independence from Britain, turning back centuries of history. Scotland’s ruling Scottish National Party, which has long advocated independence, had pledged to hold a referendum before 2016. Under law, only Britain’s Parliament can order a binding vote—meaning it must temporarily offer the power to Scotland’s semiautonomous administration. Britain’s deputy treasury chief, Danny Alexander, said Tuesday that the U.K. government would offer the power, hoping Scotland will move quickly to hold a vote. Prime Minister David Cameron has said he will campaign against attempts to sever Scotland from England for the first time since the 18th century.

I want to be a scientist, Daddy One of the numerous gifts my seven-year-old daughter Katrina received over Christmas was a science experiment kit, with seven experiments. There’s the ubiquitous volcano, a weather station, a geological dig and a few others. Katrina’s been pestering me to open it up, but I’ve been slow to get to it, so she decided to dig in herself. Donning the included safety goggles, she pulled out and assembled the model earth and moon, explaining to me we have to paint the islands on the blue ball. “I want to be a scientist. Can we watch the Discovery Channel?” she asked. I have been explaining to her she can watch the Discovery or Discovery Science Channel, since SpongeBob SquarePants melts your brain. She has since told her four-year-old brother the same thing.

“I know a few real scientists,” I told Katrina, to her delight. One is a researcher in Saskatoon. I’d say her name, but due to the nature of her work, she might have to shoot me. These scientists are a secretive lot. So we’ll call her “Susie.” Susie got her master’s degree from the University of Saskatchewan. She has worked as a molecular biology technician for over 10 years. The other scientist I know is Louise Wolf, PhD. Louise has been a close friend of my aunt since childhood. We used to hang out a bit when Louise was a roommate with my aunt while in Saskatoon, where she obtained her doctorate. I hadn’t heard from her much since she went somewhere in the U.S. northeast. A little Googling discovered that this product of the little village of Arran, Saskatchewan, is now a

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile post-doctorate research fellow with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in New York. I used to think I was kinda smart, but reading the abstract of one of her most recent papers made me realize how un-smart I am. It’s called Identification of Pax6-Dependent Gene Regulatory Networks in the Mouse Lens. Since she’s now in the ophthalmology department, I can only assume the lens here refers to that of an eye, not a camera. Here are the opening lines: “Lineage-specific DNA-binding transcription factors regulate de-

velopment by activating and repressing particular set sof genes required for the acquisition of a specific cell type. Pax6 is a paired domain and homeodomain-containing transcription factor essential for development of central nervous, olfactory and visual systems, as well as endocrine pancreas. Haploinsufficiency of Pax6 results in perturbed lens development and homeostasis. Loss-of-function of Pax6 is incompatible with lens lineage formation and results in abnormal telencephalic development. Using DNA microarrays, we have identified 559 genes expressed differentially

between 1-day old mouse Pax6 heterozygous and wild type lenses. Of these, 178 (31.8%) were similarly increased and decreased in Pax6 homozygous embryonic telencephalon. In contrast, 381 (68.2%) genes were differently regulated between the lens and embryonic telencephalon. Differential expression of nine genes implicated in lens development and homeostasis: Cspg2, Igfbp5, Mab21l2, Nrf2f, Olfm3, Spag5, Spock1, Spon1 and Tgfb2, was confirmed by quantitative RT-PCR, with five of these genes: Cspg2, Mab21l2, Olfm3, Spag5 and Tgfb2, identified as candidate direct Pax6 target genes by quantitative chromatin immunoprecipitation (qChIP).” There’s more, but I didn’t understand anything beyond the second sentence. Actually, I didn’t understand it, or even the first sentence. As I noted before, the lead author in

this study, published in 2009, came from a very humble upbringing in Arran, Saskatchewan. We called up Susie and Katrina got to quiz her on what it’s like to be a real scientist, using lasers to measure proteins and the like. After we were done, Katrina was quite impressed and continued to hammer out her plastic dinosaur bones from the plaster. I’m hoping to keep Katrina in touch with these very smart people, real scientists, doing real research that make a difference in people’s lives. Maybe if she has a few female role models in addition to her very smart mother and aunt (both registered nurses) to look up to, perhaps the monthly registered educational savings plan investment will be worth it. Football teams lose for chance at Luck With any luck, the forgettable National Football League season that was 2011 for the Indianapolis Colts won’t be repeated any time soon. With any luck, allstar quarterback Peyton Manning should be back in 2012 after missing the entire 2011 season following neck surgery. And in Andrew Luck, the likely Colts’ No. 1 pick in this April’s college draft, Indianapolis will have its quarterback of the future and should be able to seamlessly move from one future Hall of Famer (Manning) to another potential superstar (Luck). The 21-year-old Luck has been the consensus No. 1 pick ever since he was a third-year collegian at Stanford. He’s tall, super intelligent, has a rifle for an arm and is a proven winner, having led the Cardinal to a record of 31-6 over his three seasons. All season long in the NFL, fans of downtrodden teams were heard urging their teams to “Suck for

Luck” - in other words, play badly enough that their record would give them the first pick in the 2012 draft. When Manning went down for the season following his neck surgery, few fans figured the Colts - a pre-season playoff favourite had Manning been healthy - to fall so far so fast. They wound up with a record of 2-14, locking up the top pick and, in all likelihood, Andrew Luck’s services for the next decade or so. Two other teams were in contention in the Suck for Luck sweepstakes. St. Louis Rams won only twice, and Minnesota Vikings were 3-13, but only the Vikings would seemingly need to draft a quarterback. The Rams used the first pick in the 2010 draft to take Sam Bradford, a quarterback whose credentials at the time were close to what they are this year for Luck. In Bradford’s rookie year with the Rams, he took them to respectability (one

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist game away from a playoff spot), but Year 2 was a disaster. In all probability, Luck won’t be thrown into the NFL fire as Bradford was with the Rams. Manning is good for a couple more seasons and the Stanford grad will be better in the long run for having a couple of seasons to learn the pro game under Manning the Master. Colts fans, although they didn’t enjoy the 2-14 season one bit, will come to appreciate the short-term pain for the long-term gain that Luck’s talents promise. • Norman Chad of the Washington Post, complaining about the downfall of the Washington Redskins franchise: “For 6 1/2 years, the primary

voice for the team’s player personnel decisions was a chap by the name of Vinny Cerrato. If Vinny Cerrato ran a 7-Eleven, within two years they’d be open four hours a day.” • Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: “MLB has offi cially reinstated Manny Ramirez from the voluntary retirement list. Although any team taking a chance on signing him is probably doing the baseball equivalent of marrying a Kardashian - it’s exciting at first, it’s a lot of media attention, and it will probably blow up in your face.” • The Globe and Mail’s Bruce Dowbiggin, on Leafs’ GM Brian Burke’s ongoing feud with the media, suggesting he should spend more time trying to improve his hockey club: “Trading bon mots and bombshells with the

vast collection of second guessers and pack followers is not the pursuit of a serious general manager. Especially when said team is several spoons shy of a table setting.” • T.J. Simers in the Los Angeles Times, talking about the lack-lustre play of Lakers’ centre Andrew Bynum: “The next time he acts as if he cares will be his first. He gets more than $11 million this year, whether he goes all out or not, and much more for years to come as long as he remains 7 feet tall.” • Headline at Fark. com: “Barkeep, give me an Alex Ovechkin - that’s a White Russian on ice with no cup.” • Jerry Greene, ESPN. com: “What do you suppose is wrong with Barry Bonds’ mansion? Our government orders him to spend 30 days there, and he wants to appeal the decision. Maybe it’s drafty.” • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “Just eight months after Peyton Manning’s wife gave birth to twins, Dan Orlovsky - the Colts’ latest QB - became the father of triplets. Top that, Andrew Luck.”

• A sports prediction for 2012, from Mark Whicker of the Orange County (Calif.) Register: “January: Texas signs Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish but stipulates that he must change his name to Y’all Darvish.” • Steve Schrader of the Detroit Free Press, on 89-year-old Betty White doing the ESPN intro for the final “Monday Night Football” broadcast in December: “Which makes her the oldest performer on ‘MNF’ since Brett Favre.” • Another one from Perry: “Power forward Kris Humphries - Kim Kardashian’s estranged ex - is back with the New Jersey Nets after signing a one-year contract. Alas, only the first 72 days are guaranteed.” • Len Berman of ThatsSports.com, on threatened protests in Montreal because Canadiens coach Randy Cunneyworth doesn’t speak French: “Nobody knew what Casey Stengel was saying either, and nobody picketed Yankee Stadium.” Care to comment? Miles new defensive backs coach for Riders PROVINCIAL REGINA - Barron Miles won’t be helping the B.C. Lions defend their Grey Cup title. Miles was unveiled Jan. 5 as the Saskatchewan Roughriders new defensive backs coach. He served in the same capacity last season with the Lions, who beat Winnipeg to capture the 2011 Grey Cup. Miles joins a Riders team that will feature a new head coach in Corey Chamblin, who spent last season as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive co-ordinator. NATIONAL WINNIPEG - After what was described as a continent-wide search, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers found their new leader on the doorstep — or at least next door. Garth Buchko, the boss of local radio broadcastrights holder CJOB, was confirmed Thursday as the new president and chief executive officer of the CFL club, effective March 1. He is the first permanent president since Lyle Bauer left in 2009. Unlike Bauer, a former Bomber offensive lineman and current president of the Calgary Stam-

peders, Buchko promises to leave football operations in the hands of general manager Joe Mack. *** EDMONTON - It didn’t take long for Rich Stubler to find a new job. Just hours after the Edmonton Eskimos announced that Stubler won’t be returning next year as the team’s defensive co-ordinator, the B.C. Lions said Thursday he would be joining their staff in the same position. This is the third time Stubler has been a member of B.C.’s coaching staff. He was the Lions’defensive line coach in 2010 and the team’s defensive co-ordinator in 2000, when B.C. won the Grey Cup. *** KOENIGSSEE, Germany - Canadian Alex Gough won a bronze medal Jan. 5 at a luge World Cup while Olympic champion Tatjana Huefner came from behind to win gold ahead of German teammate Natalie Geisenberger. The 24-year-old Calgarian battled through challenging weather conditions to slide to her third medal of the season. The two-time Olympian clocked a two-run time of one minute 42.630

seconds. INTERNATIONAL ZURICH - Lionel Messi showed Monday why at age 24 he’s already considered one of soccer’s great players. The Barcelona and Argentina forward became the first person to win FIFA’s player of the year award three straight years. Messi received the FIFA Ballon d’Or award for 2011 ahead of club teammate Xavi Hernandez and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo. *** LONDON - A British parliamentary committee will investigate racism in sports following a spate of high-profile incidents in soccer. England captain John Terry will appear in court next month to face a criminal charge after allegedly directing racial abuse at a black opponent while playing for Chelsea. Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is serving an eightmatch ban for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during another Premier League match in October. Liverpool has also had to apologize to an Oldham player who was reduced to tears by insults

from their fans during an FA Cup match on Friday. *** ZURICH - FIFA has pledged to protect witnesses who report matchfixing plots by organized crime syndicates, as football’s world governing body launched a year-long campaign against corruption on

Tuesday. Security director Chris Eaton said FIFA will look after whistleblowers who contact a hotline which opens next month. “Players are living in fear in many countries,” Eaton told reporters. “If they come forward and have valuable information ... they

will be protected. I have that commitment from FIFA.” Eaton said FIFA has “anecdotal evidence” that players have been killed by crime syndicates to defend their multi-billion dollar business, and is monitoring worldwide reports of intimidation to co-operate with betting scams.

Coalers lose one, while Combines experience a slip With three weeks to go in the Big Six Hockey League season, the Bienfait Coalers were handed their first regulation loss last Saturday after being overcome by the Oxbow Huskies 4-1. The Coalers sit in second place in the league with an 11-1-1 record, back of the Arcola-Kisbey Combines that boast a 12-4 regular season record so far. The two teams also share top spot for scoring leaders, with the Coalers’ Brennan Wrigley finding the back of the net 15 times and adding 11 assists in 11 games, while Arcola’s Troy Miller has five goals and 26 points in 15 games. Bienfait came back from the Christmas break on Jan. 3 with a 4-2 win at home over the .500 record Redvers Rockets, followed by a 4-2 win over the Combines last Friday. The next day was

The swinging ears model generally sells for about $30, the other $15 to $20. *** Q: I have a set of dishes, service for six, acquired during the 1950s. their loss to the Huskies. The Coalers then went into Midale on Tuesday night, capturing a 3-2 victory over the Mustangs. Bienfait will host Wawota on Sunday evening and Carlyle on Tuesday. The Lampman Imperials’ struggles continue after the holidays. In their first three games of the new year, they allowed eight goals in each contest, while only posting four goals total and were shut out once. The three losses leave them in last place with a 0-12-0 record. The Imperials were first downed by the Wawota Flyers 8-0, followed by an 8-1 defeat at home to Redvers. On Jan. 10 they headed to Arcola, suffering an 8-3 loss. The Midale Mustangs sit in seventh place, one point back of the Flyers, and after losing to the Huskies 4-1 on

Jan. 6, hosted Arcola-Kisbey beating the top team in the league 5-3. The Carlyle Cougars and Carnduff Red Devils have only played one game since Christmas, and it was against each other. Carlyle is 8-3-0 on the year and handily defeated the Red Devils, who sit in second last place with one win, 7-4. The Combines sit atop the standings but they haven’t had the most successful start to 2012, losing three in a row. They lost 6-5 to Wawota on Dec. 30, before losing to Bienfait and Midale. Big Six action continues this weekend with games Friday night between Oxbow and Wawota, Carnduff and Lampman and Midale taking on Carlyle. On Saturday, Carlyle hosts Carnduff, Arcola hosts Midale and Lampman heads to Redvers.

While clearing out a storage locker recently, I found a small collection of gas-station memorabilia, including vintage oil cans, road maps and several interesting old signs. How can I determine if they are worth keeping? -- Carl, Rio Rancho, NM A: One of the better references is “Warman’s Gas Station Collectibles: Identification and Price Guides” by Mark F. Moran (Krause, $24.99). Moran’s guide features more than 1,800 illustrations in full-color of

Trader Express Career Ads Will Get The Job Done!

Make a family of readers in 2012 When I go to a friend’s house, I’m always scouting out the bookshelves or poking through piles of reading material on the coffee table or kitchen counter. It’s not that I’m that nosy, but I’ve discovered that I get to know my friends a little better when I see what they enjoy reading. What makes for a good book, newspaper or magazine, anyway? Each can be the promise of adventure, another point of view, a giggle, an alternative way of thinking. I especially love books that grab both myself and the child I’m reading with. If you popped by my house right now, you would find the striking, newly released “Puff, the Magic Dragon Pop-Up Book” (Sterling Children’s Books) on my end table. Paper engineer Bruce Foster animates the timeless lyrics page by page with amazing creativity. And when I joyfully share it with a child, I play the accompanying CD sung by Peter Yarrow of the familiar song I’ve known since childhood as we turn the pages and travel with Jackie Paper and Puff to the land of Honalee. Surely reading good books can enrich us all, no matter our age. But the extra benefits to kids go beyond the printed page. Watch children with a new book as they turn pages with anticipation and scan for things that surprise and intrigue them. Diane Lemke, an elementary principal and curriculum director, believes that reading is the river that

runs throughout education and, ultimately, life. “The innately tactile nature of children is rewarded by practice interacting with covers and pages, eye-catching colors, pictures and letters in all shapes and sizes,” she says. “Books are like packages with interesting contents of patterns and sounds. When positive adult touch is paired with book time, a message is translated about the specialness of written words.” As you turn the calendar to 2012, and you feel from time to time you aren’t offering your children or grandkids enough food for thought or possibilities for learning, crack open a book together. Discover how books can unlock a world of thinking and learning in an enriched year of family reading and storytelling. *** D o n n a E r i c k s o n ’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Winter roof maintenance Q: The last time I did an inspection of the outside of my house, I noticed a tree branch hanging over the roof gutter. My neighbor let me into his house upstairs to get a better look, and I saw that it was a fairly large branch. I don’t think I can reach it safely as there is too much snow and ice around to climb up there. Should I just leave it until spring? -- Chet C., Portland, Maine A: It’s up to you, really. If it’s too dangerous to remove by yourself, contact a professional tree service and get a written estimate of how much it will cost for them to remove the limb. If the cost is too steep, you have the option of leaving it until the snow and ice thaw and then working with a friend to remove it. But safety should always be a consideration. Even without snow and ice, the limb could be too heavy to move safely, or electrical wires could be nearby, or you may not have a ladder tall enough

• If you’ve ever been to London -- or if you’ve seen a movie that was set there -- you might remember the iconic black taxicabs that are ubiquitous in that city; the high roofs set them apart from other vehicles on the streets. The headroom offered did once serve a purpose. When the cars were originally designed, top hats were still de rigueur for a properly dressed gentleman, and the high roofs allowed a man so attired to enter and leave the vehicle without

knocking off his hat. • Yes, there’s a name for it. Healthy habits for healthy kids Childhood obesity is now a big concern. During the past 30 years, obesity rates among children have tripled, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates we have reached the point where one in three American children are overweight or obese. Not only is the problem costly -- an estimated $150 billion a year is spent on obesityrelated health care costs -- but childhood obesity reduces quality of life. Obese children are at a much greater risk for chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes and asthma. Research reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that from 1988 to 1994, about 11 percent of children in the U.S. had chronic diseases. This rate has increased to 25 percent in the period from 2000 to 2006. Data suggests that obesity may shorten the lives of children today by two to five years compared to their parents. Lynda Johnson, nutrition and health education specialist with the University of Missouri Extension, believes that much of the weight gain and chronic health problems among children could be prevented with increased physical activity and improved nutrition. There are many guidelines to help children develop healthy eating habits and maintain a healthy weight, but parents may feel overwhelmed on how to begin. Johnson suggests starting with these simple changes: --Serve kid-friendly portions. With today’s larger plates, it’s easy for children to get into the habit of eating portions that are way too large. Studies find preschoolers eat more when large servings are on their plate. --Limit sugar-sweetened beverages, and drink more water. Children can consume too many extra calories from soda, sweet tea and fruit drinks. Drinking a 12-ounce can of soda each day could lead to 10 extra pounds in a year. Serve these sugary drinks as occasional treats, rather than every day. --To boost nutrition and reduce calories, fill half your plate and your child’s plate with a rainbow of colorful vegetables. Ideas for adding more vegetables to your diet can be found online at http:// www.fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org/. The Let’s Move campaign also encourages physical activity to help balance calories. Children should participate in at least 60 minutes of active play most days of the week. It’s also important to help children avoid too much sedentary time with the TV or computer. The website Bam! Mind provides creative ideas to help children have fun, stay active and be healthy. There are lots of easy and nutritious snacks for kids that are delicious and fun to make and eat, no matter what age we are. Kids that are involved in making their snacks, or growing or selecting their snacks are more likely to want to eat them. Here are some easy snacks for children that include a variety of veggies and milk. Be sure to have your children wash their hands with soap and warm water, scrubbing for 20 seconds (about as long as it takes to sing the ABC’s), before handling or eating food. DINO DIP 1 cup low-fat or fat-free plain yogurt 1 cup low-fat sour cream 1 package dry ranch dressing mix 1. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. 2. Give each child a dollop of the dip in a separate bowl to avoid “double dipping.” 3. Serve with some old standbys, like baby carrots, cauliflower florets or broccoli “trees,” or try something new from the store, farmers market or garden, like kohlrabi, jicama, raw beets, sugar-snap peas, grape tomatoes or low-calorie cheese cubes or sticks. ICE CREAM IN A BAG

1. Pour 1/2 cup milk into a re-sealable snack bag. Close tightly. 2. Put 2 to 3 cups of ice into the quart-size freezer bag. Sprinkle a little rock salt on the ice. 3. Slip the closed baggie of milk into the bag with the ice. Close tightly. 4. Shake vigorously until the milk is frozen, being careful not to break either bag. 5. Remove the small bag with the ice cream. You’ll want to wipe the salty water from the outside of the bag and the baggie seal so your ice cream won’t taste salty. 6. Unzip the ice cream baggie, insert spoon and eat. And here’s an added bonus -- no dishes!
