To all of those current Conservative members who came out to stand in line, to vote for Ed Komarnicki’s replacement last Saturday. Cheers to the Estevan Bruins for laying a beating on Yorkton this week. It’s great beating Weyburn, but it’s just as nice thrashing the Terriers.

There are a lot of weeds and garbage in the small ditch beside the Kensington walking path. When the city cut the weeds earlier this fall they only cut them on the side of the ditch facing Kensington Ave. and left the weeds facing the businesses. If they are cutting weeds there, they should have cut them all. It looks awful. Perhaps a garbage barrel in the area would help. Jeers to Mother Nature for the brutal introduction to winter ... really?! -20s for the first bit of the cold season, this sucks.
Cheers to the City for decorating the street lights, nothing quite like the Christmas spirit .

Cheers to the start of Whitetailed rifle season and best of luck to all the hunters out there who wait all year for this season..

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling I’ve done my best so far to avoid any technobabble about video games and video game consoles - I’ve lost some of you already haven’t I - but with the holidays around the corner, I thought, ‘hey, maybe this piece will actually serve as an informative guide for parents whose kids asked for new video game systems this year.’ The recent wave of video game consoles, in my opinion, have done very little to warrant a purchase and I’d like to briefly explain why. Don’t tell your kids I said any of this. I do not want eggs launched at my home, or if we want to paint a picture more appropriate for today’s day and age, angry emails and Facebook messages. I know there are adult video game enthusiasts out there as well, who are just as passionate about the industry as anybody else, so the whole holiday guide for parents is only partially responsible for this spiel. This may be of interest to any and all lovers of video games, too. Let us step back for a moment, however, and quickly recap the last decade of video games. It’s been almost 10 years since Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console
hit the market, which was shortly followed by Sony’s PlayStation 3. Both entered the market promising an experience like never before and heavily emphasised online play. Each machine struggled in some way coming out of the gates; the Xbox 360 with its alarmingly high failure rate and the PS3 with its poor sales. The two managed to correct their problems to the best of their abilities, and lived past their expected life spans - the average lifespan for one is about five years. They had a formidable library of games and over the years, their online services were upgraded, streamlined, and ultimately delivered an experience that many cannot imagine playing without today. I’m not going to get into which system won the “console war,” but I will say both of them have cemented themselves as two of the greatest video game consoles of all time. Today, we have the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the now “current” generation of machines that have been around for about a year, and to be honest, it’s the first time my excitement surrounding new video games systems has reached such a low, and I’ve been button-mashing controllers since the Sega Genesis. I still haven’t purchased an Xbox One or PS4. Here’s why. Despite their hardware
superiority, the leap in actual gaming quality from the last generation, to this one, has been minimal. Developers haven’t had enough time to really push either of these new systems to their full potential - which is to be expected, it does take time - and the games that are apparently designed solely for the new technology largely fall flat in that aspect. I’ve played a few and read about others, and for the most part they are fun to play, but still fail to deliver an experience that is brand new. Combine that with the fact that game developers in today’s world are often forced to meet seemingly impossible deadlines, titles that hit shelves are frequently unfinished. They crash, features don’t work correctly, technical glitches are aplenty, and the majority of a game’s content is usually only available with an Internet connection. The alarming trend of paid downloadable content (DLC), which has attached itself to the gaming industry like a parasite, forcing people to pay for features that years ago were simply included in the game itself when you bought it, is here to stay and is utilized feverishly with every single title that comes out. This isn’t really something anyone can avoid anymore, unfortunately, but it continues to be a frustrating

I do believe we are reaching the point where developers and publishers are becoming comfortable with the new hardware. The consoles themselves will be fully realized to a point where those actual “next-gen” experiences will be delivered with little to no catastrophic technical problems, but right
Grain expo panel delivers repeated ideas So last week I started what became a two-part column around how stuck in old ideas the broader agricultural industry is when it comes to fixing the long term problems associated with rail transportation of grain from the Canadian Prairies. Regular readers will recall the Grain Millers Harvest Showdown Grains Expo held a panel discussion of grain transportation. The panel was made up of people representing various sectors of the grain industry. It was an opportunity to hopefully hear some fresh ideas about how to address the transportation problem for the long term. But for the most part, they did not offer a lot new, or innovative, as was the case with the suggestion we needed a more vibrant livestock sector to consume more grain here. Sadly, that ship has
sailed as we have basically exported processing, feeding, and back grounding south of the border. So what other ideas came forward from the panel? There was, of course, talk of short line rail, which seems like such a good idea because it keeps grain off the road system. The forced movements of the past year, however, had the two big rail lines focused on hitting targets, and basically forgetting the needs of short lines. It was the same with producer cars, a great idea, especially in monster yield years where producers have the product to fill cars, but again, getting cars through CP and CN was at best, a challenge. And then out came the
facilities, and the line is not suited to current loads, to mention a few obstacles to expanded usage. In the end it is not part of a transportation solution for the current era. It was also pointed out Chicago is a veritable choke point for rail service heading south, and solving that issue would help movements of grain south. That may well be true, but we know farmers haven’t exactly had a lot of impact in changing rail service in this country, so the likelihood we can influence American systems is rather thin. And, of course, there was a suggestion farmers write to their MPs. It would be nice to believe that has a huge impact on government.
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist suggestion of greater use of the Port of Churchill. I have been at Yorkton This Week for a quarter of a century, and have heard the rationale for using the northern port ever since arriving here, since nowhere on the Prairies is the port a closer option than this region. But if the argument for using the Port has been made for 25 years, and it goes back further than that, and it has not led to greater usage, it is unlikely it will happen. The season is short, even with better ice breakers, the grain companies have vested interests in other
now, the process of dishing out $400 for either of these new systems isn’t an easy one when the actual products available for them are, for the most part, still hovering on levels of mediocrity. For now, however, I’m going to hang on to my ancient gaming machine and use it to its full potential, because it’s painfully obvious that it’s got a lot of life left in it.
It would be nice to believe in Santa Claus, too. But the reality is Prairie MPs fill a House of Commons whose ruling party is decided elsewhere. It is also true farm votes are now a small percentage of even Prairie seat votes. Now these two columns may come off as harsh against what the panelists offered, and in a way it should. I respect everyone has an opinion of what is needed in grain transportation, so I accept the suggestions on that level. But sadly, they are ideas offered repeatedly through the years to little, if any affect. New ideas are need to move the system forward, and in that regard, the panel missed a chance to float some new, even radical ideas, for discussion.

Bruins break through offensively in win Josh Lewis sports@estevanmercury.ca
Going into Tuesday’s game against the Yorkton Terriers, the CanElson Drilling Estevan Bruins had not scored more than three goals in a game this season. That changed that night, as the Bruins found their offensive legs in a 5-2 victory at Affinity Place. Lynnden Pastachak, who scored his first evenstrength goal of the season, said it was a game the Bruins needed to win. The two points pulled Estevan (713-0-3) into a tie for second place in the Viterra Division with Yorkton, although the Terriers have two games in hand. “Especially this game. It was a big game coming in, it was a (division) win, so it’s basically four points for us. It was nice to score more than three goals or whatever it was,” said Pastachak. It was a complete effort for Estevan, as they outshot the Terriers 41-25, including a whopping 19-3 margin in the second period. Bruins assistant coach Aren Miller said that was “by far” the club’s best period of the year. “I asked Chris with about seven minutes left if Yorkton even got a shot yet. Tonight, we couldn’t be more proud of the guys, with all they’ve been through in the last little while here. Hopefully it shows that group in there what they can do.” It was the team’s first game since trading leading scorer Darcy DeRoose to the Kindersley Klippers late
Monday night. Bruins head coach and general manager Chris Lewgood said the team will receive “a significant return” next season that will improve the club long term. In DeRoose’s absence, the line of Pastachak, Jason Duret and Keegan Allison was reunited and played a large role in the win. “It felt good. We had tough decisions with Darcy going away, but it’s just adversity and you gotta battle through it,” said Pastachak. The Terriers got on the board first, with Tyson Enzie beating Bruins starter Tyler Gutenberg four minutes in off a quick transition up ice. “He made the saves he had to. I’m sure he might want that first one back, but he’s a battler. Sometimes it’s not pretty but he gets the job done, that’s for sure,” Miller said of Gutenberg. Late in the period, Duret tied the game on a power play, poking in a loose puck in the crease. Estevan grabbed the lead nine minutes into the second period when Brad Arabia lit the lamp on a partial breakaway. Barely three minutes later, Zach Douglas scored the club’s second power play marker of the night, delaying a point shot just long enough to take a shot blocker out of the play, then ripping a wrist shot past Terriers puckstopper Dawson MacAuley. Four minutes into the third, Pastachak popped in the team’s fourth goal after a good job by Duret of freeing the puck behind the net. However, Yorkton re-
plied just 19 seconds later, with Adam Santoro making it a two-goal game again. Chase McKersie iced it for the hosts with six minutes left. The Allison-PastachakDuret line combined for seven points on the night. “Last year they called it the Kid Line and I think it hasn’t changed much this year. Hopefully we can get (it going) like we did in the playoffs last year,” said Pastachak. Miller said after the departure of DeRoose, that line will have to get the job done on a nightly basis. “Now that (line) is going to be our go-to guys. I think we found out in the playoffs last year what those guys can do together. They get along well. We’ve mentioned a couple of times how those guys are talking, they’re talking in the dressing room, they’re talking all the time. They’re helping each other out sometimes with constructive criticism,” he said. “Those guys, they battle hard. Jason’s a little beat up right now (after returning from a broken nose), but you saw tonight he battled through, got some pucks out,
Estevan Bruins forward Jason Duret skates in on a breakaway during the first period of Tuesday’s 5-2 win over the Yorkton Terriers. Although he was stopped by goalie Dawson MacAuley on this play, he tallied a goal and two assists on the night.

Overall team effort improves, says Lewgood ⇠ p. 5 They’re only going to continue to get better.” Along with his goal, Douglas added two assists. Meanwhile, it was a different story for the Bruins on the road last weekend, as they lost 4-3 to the Nipawin Hawks on Friday and 5-1 to the Melfort Mustangs the next night. “The effort was really good. I think the guys worked hard,” Lewgood said of the weekend games. He said the level of play in Saturday’s loss was closer than the score would indicate. “It was like this. I was watching football on Sunday and I watched teams drive down to the red zone, nearly 100 yards, and then throw an interception. That’s what the game felt like to me. We’d be generating opportunities and playing well, and then have an unforced error and they’d come down and score. They pounced on every opportunity,” he said. The Bruins struck first
blood, with Kurt Sonne lighting the lamp 11 minutes into the game to give the Bruins a one-goal lead after 20 minutes. It took the Mustangs only 29 seconds to level it up in the second period, with the goal coming from recent trade acquisition Landon Robin. Luc Lemire pulled the hosts ahead by a goal with 50 seconds left in the frame. Mustangs star Travis Mayan broke the game open in the third, scoring twice in the first half of the period to make it 4-1. Justin Boyer added another insurance marker on the power play with less than five minutes to play. Melfort outshot Estevan 36-25. Bruins starter Brett Lewchuk made 31 saves, while Mustangs goalie Richard Palmer stopped 24. Friday’s game was much closer, although that was after two unanswered goals by the Bruins. “On Friday, we were
Red Devils on top of Big Six The standings in the Big Six Hockey League are an unfamiliar sight at the moment. The Bienfait Coalers have dominated the league the past four years, but early in the 2014-15 season it is the Carnduff Red Devils on top. The Devils are 5-0 so far, having scored 30 goals and allowing only 14. Carnduff won a pair of one-goal games on the weekend. They edged the Arcola-Kisbey Combines 3-2 on Saturday, then snuck past the Bienfait Coalers 4-3 on Sunday. The Coalers now own a 2-2 record. In other games on the weekend, the Midale Mustangs topped the Oxbow Huskies 7-5 on Friday and the Redvers Rockets knocked off Oxbow 5-3 on Saturday.
On Tuesday, Redvers doubled up Arcola 4-2. The Mustangs (2-0) currently sit in second place, followed by Redvers (2-1), Bienfait, the Wawota Flyers (1-1), Oxbow (0-2) and Arcola (0-4). Carnduff continues to dominate the scoring race, with Dan Moriarty leading the way with five goals and 14 points. Isaac Friesen has seven goals and 12 points, while Trevor Geiger has put up four goals and 10 points. There are four games on the slate for this weekend. Friday’s lone contest sees the Huskies visit the Flyers. There are three games Saturday. Redvers is in Midale, Wawota visits Arcola and Carnduff heads to Bienfait for a rematch. able to capitalize on some opportunities, but unfortunately, we gave them too many. That was kind of the problem again Saturday. With a team like Melfort, you just can’t afford to give them too many opportunities,” said Lewgood. ond goal at the 7:27 mark, and Keegan Allison made it 4-3 with 48 seconds left in regulation. Shots on goal were 39-30 for Nipawin. Bruins goalie Tyler Gutenberg stopped 35 shots, while Nipawin netminder Joe O’Brien turned away 27. The one bright spot in the game for Estevan was that they went 3-for-8 on the power play, an area where the team has generally controlled the play and created
scoring chances without a lot of finish. “That was good. They deserved it, and I think it’s indicative of our play a lot of nights, where we do a lot of good things but just can’t finish. It was a chance for them to see what they’re capable of,” said Lewgood. The Bruins will face the Battlefords North Stars tonight (7:30 p.m., Affinity Place) before visiting the Notre Dame Hounds on Saturday.

High expectations for Woodlawn Regional Parks
By Norm Park normpark@estevanmercury.ca
The provincial government announced last week they will allocate $1.023 million for regional parks for the 2014-15 fiscal year, which means Estevan area’s Woodlawn Regional Park will get about $12,000 of that fund. Last year’s funding for Woodlawn was around the $12,000 mark and Soparlo doesn’t expect it will be much more in the next go-
around. Mark Docherty, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister, said the government’s investment in regional parks has amounted to $6.22 million over the past seven years. The funds are distributed to member parks for capital improvements on a cost-matching basis. Although Woodlawn now consists of two distinctive locations, the original park just south of the city associated with TS&M

Woodlawn Golf Club, and the newer Boundary Dam site that was upgraded to regional park status three years ago, is still considered as one entity by the provincial ministry, according to Aaron-Lee Soparlo, Woodlawn’s supervisor. John Froese, president of the Saskatchewan Regional Parks Association said “recent reports indicate a dramatic increase in attendance with travellers experiencing the new and better image of our parks, due
largely to the popular grant program. Saskatchewan regional parks are building bigger and better camping and RV facilities. It is when you realize the aggregate amounts of this grant by the government you actually see the tremendous amount of growth and experience within the participating regional parks and for this we are forever grateful.” Grants are available to member parks to a maximum of $25,000 per park with cost sharing to a maximum of

50 per cent of project costs. After four hectic seasons of first flood recovery, and then major expansions, Woodlawn is ready for a more stabilized situation heading into the new camping year that will begin in May, 2015. The original Woodlawn Regional Park lost over two dozen prime camping spots and heavy damages to infrastructure and rental facilities in the 2011 flood, but has bounced back to the point where 54 seasonal
(long term) sites are now available along with 88 short term lots for overnight or weekend visitors. That is now coupled with the 111 seasonal sites available at their Boundary Dam location a few kilometres south, near the U.S. border. There are also 38 short term sites at Boundary Dam. This means that in total, there are 291 sites ready for trucks, RVs, tents and campers at the two locati ons. ⇢ p. 11 Sewer

Additional sewer services being considered for Woodlawn ⇠ p. 10 “Boundary is full service with water/electricity/ sewer services. Woodlawn’s original park seasonal lots have electricity/water and sewer and the short term sites have power and water,” Soparlo added. Additional sewer services are being looked at for Woodlawn’s original park and with an increase of 40 new sites at Boundary Dam last year, it’s perhaps time to stabilize the situation and plan for the future and some further growth, the park
supervisor said. At least that appeared to be the wishes of the board up to this point. “All seasonal sites were taken up last year. A few were vacant for awhile due to weather issues, as were the short term sites, but all seasonal (long term) lots were snapped up at both locations,” Soparlo said. A lottery-type draw is underway for some prime locations for next season. Last year the lottery draw was for 22 sites. The original Woodlawn has the additional

A brief history of Canadian 4-H 4-H success Opinion 101 years of impressive growth By Norm Park For Agri News
The 4-H historians have noted that the first-ever 4-H club in Canada came to reality in Rolland, Manitoba in 1913. The first livestock clubs in Saskatchewan came to life in Dubus, Colgate and Tatallon in 1917 with John Rayner as the first overall director who emphasized that the boy and girl was the primary concern and their projects were secondary. The first district council for 4-H didn’t take shape until 1949 with the purpose of organizing a district, Fat Stock Show and Sale. By the time 1952 rolled around, the 4-H moniker was officially being adopted and the Saskatchewan 4-H Club program achieved official status with the fourleaf clover with the letter H on each leaf, being the official insignia. The Saskatchewan 4-H Council came into being in 1957. This was the first provincial 4-H council
in Canada. This was followed by the Saskatchewan 4-H Foundation in 1960. This is an independent body charged with the duty of administering the program funds for provincial programs.

Camp Rayner was host to the first 4-H leaders’ seminar in 1968 and in 1973, that camp played host to the first provincial 4-H rally to mark the 60th anniversary. The 4-H Council Hall of Fame was established in 1984 and first inductees were elected the following year. In 2002, a restructuring plan was unveiled based on a 1999 strategic plan study and survey. As a result, the executive board numbers were reduced, and the number of regions were also reduced from six to four. Two years later, Harold the Hare was revealed as the official 4-H mascot and last year, 4-H Canada celebrated 100 years of programming with Saskatchewan adding replica grain elevator and photographic embellishments to the commemorative display housed in the 4-H National Museum in Rolland, MB.
Proud 4-H supporter
I’ve told the story before, and I’m about to repeat it. A number of years ago, while interviewing a very successful captain of business and head of a large industrial complex, the question was asked: “What do you look for in a young person who is wanting to get where you are?” “I look at the resume,” he replied. “If I see anywhere in there that he or she has been in a military cadet program or in the 4-H, they’ll get a preference in my book, because that already tells me a lot.” Naturally I paraphrase since the exact words have long been lost to memory, but the message has remained embedded. That’s why there are so many good reasons to trot out the 4-H program for a little airing and celebration every year. There is a good reason why it’s stuck around for 101 years. Any trained educator will tell you that youngsters best learn through doing things. Well gee, that just so happens to be the official 4-H motto. And like the cadet programs, they don’t cut corners. The young members are expected to measure up to expectations, or fade away if they see they aren’t. 4-H is not school-based programming, but it certainly helps young people learn the disciplines that are also taught in classrooms. They learn to record accurately, measure, clean and communicate and more importantly, they learn to make decisions based on what they’re observing and reacting to, not always on what someone has told them to do. The program is totally flexible. 4-H can teach youngsters all kinds of skills that include farming grains or garden produce, raising cows, steers, sheep, goats, horses or hogs. The members can learn sideline skills such as photography, community awareness, and bookkeeping. In other words, they get to explore and discover their skill levels in doing what they already like doing. They get to debate, brainstorm and discuss while learning the differences among them. They learn how to stand up and speak up in public with public speaking competitions, just like cadets do. They learn to dream in realities, not in technicolour fantasies. They learn the business of producing what the world needs. The four Hs in the pledge says it all. I pledge: My head to clearer thinking. My heart to greater loyalty My hands to larger service My health to better living For my club, my community and my country.

Ross family simply sold on 4-H By Norm Park For Agri News
At 14, she’s an eightyear veteran of the 4-H program and pretty well enjoying what it has to offer. Asked what she doesn’t appreciate about being an Outram-Madigan 4-H Beef Club member, Cassidy Ross quickly responds, “getting up early in the cold to feed the cattle.”
That one was easy to answer she figured, offering an accompanying big laugh as she glances at her mother Crystal, who is obviously the early morning motivator for both of her daughters. Younger sister Carlee, by two years, is also a dedicated beef club member, but that dedication is severely tested when the temperatures dip below 20 degrees Celsius and the

heifers and steers that have been carefully selected for additional attention, need to be pampered. Cassidy, an intermediate level member of 4-H, has been at this since she attained the eligibility age of six entering the program as a cloverbud member. Her father, Chad, is the current leader of the Outram-Madigan club and his wife explains that he is quite willing to share some of the duties with her, especially the paperwork part. Sister Carlee is currently president of the club, a position Cassidy had held in the past too and the current executive is comprised of Tess Brokenshire, secretary; Keira Phillips, club reporter; Carson Petterson, treasurer and Kyra Driedger, head of the thank you committee. Outram-Madigan is one of those beef clubs that is on a growth pattern this year, with six additional members, bringing their membership up to 16. One of those newcomers is a senior, the rest are juniors, cloverbuds or intermediate ages. “We have a pretty aggressive group,” said
Cassidy and Crystal Ross of the Outram-Madigan 4-H Beef Club. Crystal. “Eduction seems to be pretty important to them.” As far as membership decisions were concerned, Cassidy giggles and then explains, there really wasn’t much of a decision to be made. She was in, no choice to make. The Ross family, well known beef producers in the region, are firm believers in the program and have been for generations. Cassidy explained that when the selection process is complete she begins grooming specific heifers
and steers she might want to show in spring and summer competitions and later sell at auction. She usually picks out six head and then sorts them out. She “pushes” the steers in a maintenance and weight gain program and even gets to weigh them monthly. “I’m looking for muscle, confirmation, some width in the animal. When it’s a calf, you look at the length and you can see if it’s going to be a good one even after just a few days following its birth,” she said.
Needless to say, Cassidy enjoys beef and other animal judging the most out of all the 4-H opportunities. Asked if she favours any particular breed in the selection process, Crystal quickly jumps in to remind the young member and interviewer that “all beef breeds have their strengths,” adding a laugh, and a reminder that it was best to be diplomatic when talking about specific breeds of cattle. “We have all colours,” said Cassidy, noting how her family works a commercial cow-calf operation with no real preferences anyway. “But they certainly do have personalities,” she adds with a giggle. Asked if she gets attached to these pampered select few, and she’s quick to note that at one time she may have been, but “you get into the business end of it, you realize that the auction sale is the end of it. You get used to it.” When she’s not washing and trimming cattle, Cassidy and other family members will more than likely be found on the back of a horse. She claims she has dibs on four of them on the family’s ranch south of the city. She’s working with a young colt this year. Mom states she has three horses herself, but everyone has their favourite, especially when it comes to herd movement and specific fall and spring chores. When she has to do the ranch kid work, in the saddle all day, Charlie is the steed of choice when it comes to moving cattle. “I believe we want to push the value of learning judging skills this year,” said Crystal. “We’re getting a feeling that most of the kids want to get into it a little more. But we also have to remind ourselves that we have a pretty young club. → Pg 15 Dedicated
THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2014
Dedicated to leadership ← pg 14 We had just three intermediates last year, so there is a lot of reinforcing that has to go on from one member to another. Most members won’t be repeating any items, so there shouldn’t be any boredom. They’ll be kept busy,” said Crystal, who, with Chad, are into their fourth year as club leaders. Knowing that a young person can remain a member into their 21st year, Cassidy states she’ll probably remain active at least until she enters college to become a veterinarian like her aunt and uncle.
The SE Trader Express salutes our 4-H Clubs
When the weather turns from ugly to softer and spring officially arrives, Cassidy said she’ll be spending even more time washing, clipping and making more frequent checks on her selected animals. An early March show in Regina will be the start of the exhibit season. That will be followed by another spring show in Yorkton and by May, they’ll be well tutored for the Lord of the Rings competition in Estevan and the Estevan Exhibition show and sale in early summer. “The sponsors, pro-
moters, individual buyers and businesses over the years have been tremendous backers of the 4-H program around here. We can’t thank them enough. The kids are always grateful for those bids and the purchase prices,” said Crystal. So impressive is the support, that a youngster might even forget, for a few minutes, the pain and agony of getting up in the early morning blackness of winter, to tend to the needs of what they hope will be a prize winning steer or heifer.

by Samantha Weaver • It was beloved American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson who made the following sage observation: Sometimes a scream is better than a thesis. • As the holidays and the inevitable family gatherings approach, you might want to prepare yourself to engage in logomachy -- a battle fought with words. • In the African nation of Swaziland, it is illegal for a witch to fly a broomstick at an altitude above 150 meters. • If you’re like 91 percent of Americans, you sometimes eat breakfast for dinner. • You may have been unaware of it for the past 11 months, but 2014 has been the International Year of Family Farming, so declared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. • Place-names sometimes enter the English language through roundabout means. Take Arkansas, for instance: That state’s name comes from the word akansa, which is a French pronunciation of an Algonquin name for the Native American Quapaw people. The original word means either “people of the south wind” or “downriver people.” • You might be surprised to learn that the fax machine was invented in the 19th century. In 1843, a man named Alexander Bain patented Bain’s Telegraph, which was able to transmit an exact copy of lines, letters and shapes to chemically treated paper on the other end of the line. • In 2013, for the first time, the United States offered a larger market for wine than France. *** Thought for the Day: All one’s life as a young woman one is on show, a focus of attention, people notice you. You set yourself up to be noticed and admired. And then, not expecting it, you become middle-aged and anonymous. No one notices you. You achieve a wonderful freedom. It’s a positive thing. You can move about unnoticed and invisible. -- Doris Lessing (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

You won’t hear it on the radio, but you will be able to hear it in southeast Saskatcehwan. The musical performance, which consists of two musicians from Ukraine, will take place at
the Trinity Lutheran Church in Estevan on Nov. 26 and at Midale School Nov. 27. Nadia Babchouk is one half of the musical duo from the Ivano Frankivsk region of West Ukraine where music is an important aspect of the culture. It’s also where she obtained a diploma for teaching the violin. She
then moved on to university, where she received a scholarship and decided to pursue music even further. Over the summer in 2014, Nadia joined Veseli Halychany, a musical folk group that has been touring the world since the late 80s, during their tour in Ukraine. “I really want to show
people the beauty of Ukrainian culture,” she said, after noting the large number of Ukrainian people who live in the area. Babchouk currently teaches in Estevan and Weyburn within local businesses that have been kind enough to offer her some space and time during specific times in
the week. She also teaches at her home in Midale, but is looking for a permanent location in the Energy City. One of her passions, which she said surprises most people, is her affinity for car racing. “That’s been a dream of mine for a long time,” she said. “I haven’t been able
to try it yet, except on the street,” she joked. Music, however, is unquestionably her passion, and she said she hopes the upcoming performances will raise enough money for her to buy more instruments for students and fund a local orchestra. ⇢ Pg.22 Local

Vatsyk a jack of all trades musician ⇠Pg.21 Babchouk’s husband, Greg Mackie, who works behind the scenes, organizing shows and making sure his wife’s performances run smoothly and are of the highest quality, said a local orchestra is something that belongs in a smaller communities, not just the big cities like Saskatoon and Regina. “I think having an orchestra in your area delivers a sense of civic pride,” he said. “We have the brass orchestra, which is wonderful, but when the city needs entertain-
ment and some music, these people are readily available.” Mackie said young children who are interested in music and attend music school will have something to look forward to locally, and can cherish the fact that they can represent the city they were raised in. “It’s just like basketball or hockey, you start at the junior levels and work your way up to the seniors,” he said. Mackie met Babchouk in school at Prince Albert,
and their encounter, he said, was completely unexpected. “My plan was to get out of Prince Albert by the end of August and avoid meeting anyone and avoid winter,” he laughed. “I stayed there until April and met Nadia through one of her friends, who kind of introduced us, so I guess I kind of struck out on both of my goals.” Babchouk’s musical partner, Bogdan Vatsyk, who Babchouk has known since university, was a member of an orchestra in
Ukraine and is renowned for his uncanny skill with the violin. “He is so multi-faceted, it’s incredible,” said Mackie. “There’s a guy in Ukraine named Papa Duke, and he’s the standard a lot of people go by when it comes to music,” he said. “Papa Duke is well known, and though Bogdan isn’t as popular, he’s in that class. He can listen to a tune for a few seconds and play it on the violin.” Mackie said Vatsyk also plays the piano and

an instrument called a cimbala, a unique stringed instrument. Babchouk asked Vatsyk to come to Canada to play at musical festivals and help spread their country’s unique musical culture. “He’s way better than me,” Nadia said modestly. Mackie stressed the significance of having a piece of foreign culture showcased in the area. “It takes a huge amount of effort in maintaining these cultural elements, but it’s beautiful,”

he said. Magic of Karpaty is a production that encourages participation, and people who have attended one of Babchouk’s shows will realize how hard it is to stay seated. “We want everyone to get up and dance and have a good time,” Babchouk explained. “It’s going to be a very relaxed atmosphere,” Mackie noted. “People will soak in sounds they’ve never heard before, and we want people to be entertained.
