Year In Review January January 10 Co-workers rally around Olson after diagnosis During the summer of 2013, former Estevan man Rob Olson, was diagnosed with a rare lymphoma in his intestine. In the fall, he learned the cancer had spread to his bladder, complicating chemotherapy treatments. The 35-year-old was on his third type of chemotherapy at the Royal University Hospital (RUH) in Saskatoon, which is designed to attack the cancer in both locations. Told by doctors the odds weren’t in his favour with that treatment, Olson has investigated the possibility of travelling to Houston to seek further treatment at one of the best cancer centres in the world. Olson’s Cameco co-workers looked to raise funds to help cover the cost of the second opinion he could receive at the centre in Houston. The group hoped to raise $10,000, which was to cover Olson’s initial consultation in Houston. SE Newcomers changes provider in New Year The Southeast Newcomers Services (SENS) saw some
changes as the calendar flipped from 2013 to 2014, and perhaps the most important of all was the move out of office space at the Estevan Comprehensive School and into a new, more central location to 1108 Sixth Street. SENS changed service providers in the New Year, as the contract with the Southeast Regional College expired. The service that dealt with not only immigrants coming to the Estevan area but also Canadians who are coming here to work joined forces and began operating within the Southeast Advocates for Employment. A grand opening was held on April 23 to introduce the new space to the entire community.

Can’t wait to be bored You might Alex Coop
Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling Being bored is impossible. As a young kid I was never bored, and even when the possibility of boredom hovered on the horizon I managed to do something to prevent myself from saying the words, “I’m bored.” I read, I cleaned, I played video games or I played with my cats. Those routines were always available on the daily agenda if nothing else was planned. Perhaps I’m simple minded and amused by simple things, but nevertheless, the concept of boredom was one I never quite understood. As I got older, I found those quieter moments, perhaps described by many as “boring” moments, to be quite exhilarating. They occurred less frequently, but when they reared their heads, I welcomed them with open arms. As the holidays continue, I eagerly await the few days I have off next week. Weekends are different. You still have work in your peripheral vision or you’re required to work weekends anyway. Now suddenly these two days off, which seemingly crept up on me, have got me thinking of all the boring stuff I could be participating in.
After I finish cleaning, I envision myself sitting in my bed with every pillow I can find surrounding my body, so no matter which direction I decide to lean I will be guaranteed to be met with softness. Of course, a movie will be playing in tandem with my epic laziness, which will include all sorts of junk food on the table next to the bed. I will finally engulf myself in the fantasy world provided by the video game Dragon Age, a gift my girlfriend will no doubt regret purchasing once she returns from her trip home and finds me in the same place she left me in. I’ll Skype with my parents who live in Ontario, and I’ll endure all the generic questions parents ask their child who lives thousands of miles away. And I’m going to love it. These first seven months in Estevan have been incredibly special next steps in my life. I never imagined I would be so far away from home and I had no idea things would work out as well as they did. Alongside the work I managed to find here upon graduation, work that I constantly remind myself I went to school for and obtained through an education I at times believed would lead me no where – being wrong feels great – I’ve met some genuinely amazing people who make me feel welcome and comfortable in a city where the exterior takes some getting used to. I’m going to love being bored for the next few days, while reminiscing about this new entry in my life that has already provided me with some amazing memories.

Some veggies can’t hurt Sometimes a very random event brings a writer to an idea for a weekly column. Recently I was in a local sandwich shop in Yorkton and decided to try the spicy black bean offering. I tend to like to try different things when out for a meal, and I do like spicy, so I figured why not. Since I was able to customize the offering the way I wanted, sprouts, humus, feta cheese, and black olives etc., it tasted great. But where the little push came in was the question from the gal making the pita sandwich; ‘Was I a vegetarian?’ I have to admit that is one question which I would have put high on my ‘never going to be asked that’ list. I grew up on a mixed farm, pigs, chickens, often a calf to raise over summer to butcher in the fall, so meat was part of every meal, and while I will occasionally happily graze a salad for supper, I am pretty far from the vegetarian lifestyle, not that there is anything wrong with making a personal choice in what we eat. The question did have me thinking, though. In recent years I have begun to consume far more pulse/legumes than I did when I was younger. While mom and grandma grew green and yes those terrible yellow beans which were served in a tomato soup sauce, and there were of course pork ‘n beans on every camper trip,
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist that was about it. If a lentil came into the house back then it would have had to be hidden in the rarely eaten store bought soup in a can. They were simply not heard of that I recall. Since then I have found a love of Indian food where lentils and beans are widely used. I have also found I have added lentils, green, red, Spanish and beluga to my own cooking. They were in the pumpkin chicken stew I whipped up for a Halloween gathering of friends, and they were in the traditional pot of chili that was part of watching the recent Grey Cup. And it’s the same with beans, and even chickpeas, they are showing up on the plate on more regular basis as I learn how tasty they can be in a variety of dishes. As my interest in eating lentils, beans and peas has grown, so too has Prairie farmer
interest in growing the crops, in particular in Saskatchewan. The United Nations is about to increase pulse crop awareness even more. The organization has designated 2016, International Year of Pulses. Recently, Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall announced $100,000 in funding to support activities for the 2016 IYOP. The announcement was made in Mumbai, India, where the premier was touring promoting Saskatchewan as a supplier to India of food and fuel. “The International Year of Pulses will act as a catalyst for heightened awareness of the vital role pulses play in the pursuit of global food security,” Wall said in a release. “As one of the world’s largest producers of pulses, the declaration is an opportunity for Saskatchewan to showcase its leadership and pursue further export market development.” I have to say I see the investment by the province as a good one, since pulse crops are an area which could see more farmers dedicating acres to given the huge world demand for the crops, and helping facilitate ties to a major user like India makes sense. And from a personal perspective, the more I learn about pulses, the more often they find their way to the cooking pot.

Theatre announces musical as first show Local live theatre in Estevan announced its first production for the 2014 season, with a musical that featured pop hits of the 1950s and ‘60s, known as The Marvelous Wonderettes, written by Roger Bean. The show opened the evening of July 13 and ran until July 19. It featured familiar hits, including Mr. Sandman, Dream Lover, It’s In His Kiss, It’s My Party, Respect and many others. The show attracted the talents of several women who were originally from Southeastern Saskatchewan and the show turned out to be a huge success. Stoughton lifts boil water advisory, introduces new facility By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury.ca
After five long years, The Town of Stoughton’s boil water advisory has been lifted and an open house of the new water treatment plant in town was held, putting a stamp on a new beginning for the town’s water moving forward. “People in this town are really happy,” said Stoughton mayor Bill Knous the day before the open house on Dec. 19. “It took some time for the project to get rolling but once it did it was smooth sailing.” MP Ed Komarnicki attended the open house along
with several other members of the community, who were thrilled to know the project was completed with relative smoothness. Since mid-2009, Stoughton has been under a boil water advisory as a result of new water regulations that required turbidity levels in the water distribution system to remain under 1.00 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU). “Turbidity is the clarity of the water,” said Folk in an interview with the Southeast Trader during the month of September. “It’s a measurement of particles and clarity of the water, so when the water goes through the filtration system, you’re eliminating all that turbidity, or at least a

large portion of it. These upgrades will provide better quality drinking water to the public, which is the ultimate goal.” Folk however stressed that the town’s water was safe to drink, but upon discovering that their older system, which mainly relied on chlorine to disinfect the water, wasn’t resulting in turbidity levels under 1.00 NTU, upgrades had to be made. These upgrades were also essential to accommodate the town’s population growth spurt, said Folk. The project was possible through a variety of fundraising methods alongside assistance from the federal government, which chipped in with $250,000, to help construct the $1.5 million project.

April 4 Country calling Country music staple Travis Tritt brought his hits to Affinity Place as the latest concert headliner to roll through the Energy City. Originally from Marietta, GA., Tritt released his first album in 1989 and enjoyed immediate success, as his album Country Club sold over one million copies. In 1992 he released his second album It’s All About to Change, which went on to become his best selling album at over three million copies. Along with selling around 25 million albums, Tritt

Students try their hand at basket business The student-driven business known as Bodacious Baskets came to fruition at the Estevan Comprehensive School. Stephen Pacunayen, head of production and Jessica Bloor, vice-president of marketing and sales explained that their team contained 14 students in the entrepreneurship class at ECS. The gift baskets were made for various seasons and holidays. Bodacious Baskets made approximately $20,000 in gross sales later that year and with each student putting $20 into the company as a shareholder, those investments projected a return of around $570.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2014
MMRP launches early 2015 The province-wide Multi-Material Recycling Program (MMRP) is moving forward and will launch early 2015, according to the Government of Saskatchewan. The MMRP is a costsharing recycling program between businesses and municipalities to help pay for the collection and recycling of household packaging and paper materials. Municipal recycling is currently paid for by municipalities. Under the MMRP, however, businesses and organizations that distribute packaged goods and paper to households in the province will now share responsibility for the cost of recycling these materials. “After careful consideration of feedback from various stakeholders over the past number of months, we are adjusting the program to
provide more clarity on how it will apply to various types of businesses,” said environment Minister Scott Moe in a press release. Businesses that distribute or sell packaging and paper products in Saskatchewan are required under The Household Packaging and Paper Stewardship Program Regulations to participate in MMRP. The program will be operated by MultiMaterial Stewardship Western (MMSW), a non-profit organization. As a result of consultation, adjustments have been made to the program and will be finalized in the new year. The proposed changes include the following: Small businesses, including newspapers, that have a gross revenue of less than $2 million, or generate less than
one tonne of packaging and paper, or operate as a single point of sale (not a franchise or chain) are fully exempt from participating in MMRP. A two year temporary transition exemption will be in place for businesses whose annual revenue is between $2 and $5 million. These businesses will not be required to report their tonnage of household packaging and paper during this period, but will be required to register with MMSW and contribute a $500 annual flat fee. The two year transition exemption will also apply to all larger newspapers (all those not captured within the Sun Mon small business exemption). For the full list of proposed changes go to sasatchewan.ca/government/news-and-media/ 5 6 2014.
