The best just got a whole lot better. Susan Bozic was at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum to talk about her Dating Portfolio, which has been up since Jan. 8 and is presented in Gallery 2 as a part of the Quixotic exhibit. He would try and create an image of the person on the other end of the conversation based off their interactions. Then, upon their first meeting, he would photograph his date who would be dressed as Fader initially perceived them. A second photo was later taken; portraying the real person Fader was dating. In the gallery, the first photo concept was on the left, the second on the right. A short transcript of some of their interactions is placed in the middle between each photo. “ Wo r k i n g o n t h i s changed me in an extreme way,” Fader said, admitting it was an incredible experience, while acknowledging the difficulties that came with his personal life and his work becoming a single entity, a consequence he initially underestimated. Yashcheshen posted some of the transcripts from her online conversations on to a mirror. Passerbys could study the text and, quite literally, see themselves in those conversations. Susan Bozic was also on hand to talk about her

work, which has been up since Jan. 8 and is presented in Gallery 2 as a part of the Quixotic exhibit. “It’s conceptuallybased and derives from a theme, an idea, and it’s also staged photography,” said the former photography graduate of Concordia University located in Montreal. Her inspiration for the project came from the mass media surrounding dating and the expectations versus reality scenarios that come with them. She decided to create the Dating Portfolio, using a mannequin and herself to stage some typical dating scenes. From watching a movie to a romantic scene in front of a fireplace, all the clichés are addressed, and Bozic said people can look at the photos from a number of different angles. “Some may look at it and go, ‘oh she seems really happy and is obviously having a good time,’ while others might stop and go, ‘why is she so happy and does she not realize she’s not dating a real person?’” Bozic praised the EAGM’s galleries and

the space it provides artists on a consistent basis, adding it’s great that a smaller community like Estevan can have that kind of environment. “ I t ’s p u s h i n g t h e boundaries and creating some great dialogue among people walking in,” she said. Amber Andersen, curator of I’ll show you mine and director of the EAGM, said that she hopes people engage in those conversations. “My desire is not to be provocative for the sake of being provocative,” she said. “It’s about putting pieces out there that educate and inform.”

One may not have the chiseled body and highpaying job, but that doesn’t mean those who fall under a different category have no hope for finding a date, or perhaps true love. On Jan. 15, the opening of I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours: Love in the modern age in Gallery 1 was accompanied by the work of three artists who each brought a unique perspective to a topic that is often shrouded in misconception. “It used to be a very taboo thing, but today, it’s very much the norm,” said Amber Andersen, curator of I’ll show you mine and director of the EAGM, before the exhibit’s official opening. Unique pieces dotted the gallery, each approaching the topic of the night from a variety of different angles. Whether it was a mirror with an attached transcript of those conversations or paintings of hopeful animals looking to fulfill their online desires, there was no shortage of creativity. “People seem to be very comfortable with animal representations,” Andersen said about Belinda Harrow’s work. Harrow is known for using animals in her work. “She has these two opposing ideals in her pieces … because people have different reasons for being on there.” New York based artist Sean Fader spoke to guests alongside artist Shannon Yashcheshen, and discussed their work and how it reflects online dating. Between Jan. 2010 and Jan. 2011, Fader went on 100 first dates, all of which stemmed from countless interactions on dating websites.

Revealing the true you online You might

Some interesting conversations emerged from the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum’s recent exhibit opening last week, all of which revolved around online dating. It’s not something I’ve participated in before, but the fresh perspectives provided by the artists and their work was engrossing and informative. Online dating has become a legitimate way of finding interesting people to hang out with. Embarrassment is no longer associated with the digital form of hooking up with someone, and for some, it’s even created relationships that last a lifetime. One would probably assume that an online profile on a dating website would be exaggerated or entirely fabricated, but according to some of the experts at the exhibit’s opening, that’s not entirely true. Sure, you have the occasional oddball who claims to be a point guard for the Toronto Raptors or a nuclear physicist, but with the overwhelming number of users trying to find a match online, individuality becomes more and more important. A conversation with New York based artist Sean Fader revealed some interesting ideas that took me by surprise. I asked him, in a place like Estevan, a predominately male-dominated society where men outnum-

Alex Coop

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling ber women by some hilarious number I don’t want to throw out there due to a lack of assurance, how does this affect the online dating scene? Fader answered that, perhaps even more so than in a large city, honesty would consume the majority of people’s online profile. He used a five star rating as an example, and said that with a large number of men likely hovering in that three-star category, meaning their average good looking men living very normal lives, dudes who perhaps know they can’t compete with the chiseled chops and large biceps provide women, who obviously have a lot to choose from, an honest profile, thus increasing their chances of standing out to that one woman who is looking for that quirky man in her life who plays Magicka the card game, enjoys playing with cats and does cosplay on the side. It makes perfect sense. Fader noted the creators of Okaycupid, one of the most popular online dat-

ing services in the world, discovered that at the end of the day, people don’t lie online because they know there is someone out there for every single type of person. And, of course, there’s that possibility that if they do find a match while using a profile that claims they’re a Hollywood actor but really they’re a librarian – nothing against librarians, just using it as an example - they’ll have to think mighty hard how to pull off that act on the first date. One thing about online dating that turns me off is the emphasis so many people place on the similar interests and hobbies. Without a doubt, it’s nice to be able to engage in activities you and your date enjoy equally or talk passionately about sports, but these shouldn’t make or break someone’s decision to meet a person upon review of their online profile. Those looking for something short term probably take greater note of those similarities, but regardless, there are more important aspects of a person that need

be from Saskatchewan if...

Excerpt from You Might be from Saskatchewan if… Volume 2 by Carson Demmans and Jason Sylverstre. to be acknowledged. Find out what their core values are. Are they looking for fame and fortune, or perhaps just cruising through an admirable career and hoping to have fun along the way? Is he or she homophobic or transphobic, because that’s a major red flag right there. These questions, which aren’t the best conversation starters but are neverthe-

less important if you really want to understand someone, have greater value than a question about whether or not he or she likes hiking. To an extent, hobbies and interests can be on opposite wavelengths, but if you share some of those core values, the chance of becoming compatible with one another should increase.

Markets all about give and take It’s always interesting to read about reports that are released in the area of agriculture. Sometimes they bring to light some intriguing information. At other times you are left wondering why it took a report to unveil the obvious. In some respects it’s a combination of the above with ‘Finding the Hidden Dragon: Why Taiwan Matters to Canada’s Economic Future’. To start with it should not come as a surprise that Taiwan is a huge potential market for agricultural products. A person could create a list of markets simply by doing an Internet search of countries with large populations, and overlaying that with countries with high population densities based on land mass. Where countries have both mass populations, and limited land areas, you have a market for food. That only stands to reason. Limited land means limited ability to grow your own food. If a population is massive, then it stands to reason there will be a need to import food. Now Taiwan does produce agricultural products, flowers, and horticultural products, but they also import some $14 billion in agricultural products, based on 2012 numbers. A recent Western Producer article noted,

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist “Canada exported more than $210 million in agri-food products to Taiwan in 2013. Leading Canadian agricultural exports are typically meat products, animal hides, cereals and oilseeds.” The issue is not so much determining where markets are, but how to effectively access them. Canada is not the only country selling beef or pork, or wheat, and other exporting countries, Australia, Argentina and others, can have advantages in terms of shipping and even coast of production, which means Canada can be a step behind in marketing before knocking on the door seeking a sale. And markets today are often about give and take. You might swing a deal to sell product ‘A’, but it comes with an understanding you’ll increase access for their product ‘B’.

That on the surface is a great way for things to work, but in terms of food security, no country wants to harm a domestic sector by creating import competition, and perhaps it shouldn’t even think about it given the world we live in. We like the idea of free markets, and we have long lived in a world where trade has generally moved safely. But in a world where the United States and Russia are once more posturing in opposition to one another, terrorism seems to be a growing issue, racial tensions tighten stateside, and the world watches disease such as ebola unfold, the free flow of food could be impacted all too easily. The need to maintain as much ability to grow one’s own food in country is as important to Canada as any other country, and that has to be remembered. So while creating a list of markets is easy enough, balancing things and building market access is not. Of course, Canada needs to find customers since we produce almost everything for export, and that is why we need to not just identify markets, but work to build sales connections while still keeping our countries farmers doing what they do best, producing food.

Large busts have far-reaching effects By Alex Coop acoop@estevanmercury.ca

An influx in the price of illegal drugs will coincide with a potential lull in drug-related activity in southeast Saskatchewan, according to Cpl. Jeff Smoliak of the Carlyle RCMP, but it won’t last long. “In about a month or two, other players will come into play to replace those arrested,” Smoliak said, referring to the massive seizure of guns and drugs by police across Saskatchewan and Alberta, the main target being the Hells Angels and the Fallen Saints. Significant amounts of counterfeit oxycontin and methamphetamine were seized. The entire bust was part of a major police investigation into organized crime in Saskatchewan and Alberta. “When you see a bust go down, the demand for those illicit drugs stays the same or sometimes increases, but the prices go up,” Smoliak said, who was also a member of the organized crime unit in Regina

to gang-related activities is found. He also said once gang members are initiated, it’s extremely hard for them to leave, and de-

spite the criminal activities they’re involved in, they continue to perform them because of that togetherness provided by the group.

The drugs are trafficked using any number or combination of transportation methods, including land, water and air. “A lot of gangs in the area are connected to gangs out west,” Smoliak added. Youth and young adults looking for companionship and a sense of worth are highly susceptible to entering street-level gangs. “It plays a huge part, especially in the aboriginal community unfortunately, where some don’t have the best upbringing due to their parents or guardians suffering from substance abuse issues or other problems, so they look for that sense of togetherness somewhere

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JANUARY 23, 2015 Obituaries

Obituaries

Craig Raymond September 20, 1956 January 2, 2015 It is with great sadness that we share the news, that after a brief illness, Craig passed away peacefully at the Regina General Hospital. Craig was predeceased by his father Marcel in January, 2001, Uncle Robert Smith in 2013 and Stanley Dolski in January, 2012. Survived by his mother Cynthia (nee Candy), his brother Rodney (John) and Linda Henderson and their children Curtis, Steven and Jennifer Raymond, Chris Henderson (fiancee, Janelle Howlett), Joel Henderson and great-niece Madison Raymond, sister Catherine Flood and her children Patrick and Dylan, long-time girlfriend Patricia Dolski and her family, Aunt Evelyn Smith, Cousins Nancy, Jeff (Tony), Gene (Cathy) and their families, Aunt Lorna Rolph, Uncle Rodney Candy (Patricia), cousins Susan (Peter), Ann (Francis) and their family, Neil (Pauline) Candy and numerous other cousins. Craig was born and raised in Gainsborough. He attended Elementary School in Gainsborough from Gr. 1 to 9, then High School in Carnduff for grades 10-12. His education continued briefly in Brandon for a year. He then studied Mechanical Engineering Technology in Saskatoon for an additional two years. Craig’s working career began with Caprocco Corrosion Prevention for a short time. He then worked for Dome Petroleum, Producer’s Pipeline and Enbridge for more than 35 years. Craig retired Sept. 1, 2014. Craig’s interests in school were curling, volleyball, fastball and swimming. He continued to enjoy swimming as an adult and achieved the highest level in Red Cross Training. He also enjoyed water skiing. Other interests were cycling, downhill skiing, tennis, reading and, of course going to the family cabin at Kenosee Lake. Craig loved all of the family pet dogs through the years and thoroughly enjoyed taking the dogs for a walk so they could take a dip in Kenosee Lake. Craig took great pleasure in finding shady spots to read, the buffets and the nightly shows on his winter vacations to warm locations with Patricia. He also enjoyed spending many hours bantering with family and friends, especially challenging a person’s knowledge of a wide variety of topics. Donations in memory of Craig can be made to the Stollery Children’s Hospital (online at secure.stollerykids.com), Moose Mountain Recoup and Release Wildlife Rehabilitation (online at moosemountainrnr.org) or to the charity of your choice. Thank You The Raymond family would like to say thank you to our friends, neighbours, extended family and Craig’s co-workers for the sympathy gifts of flowers, cards and food. It was greatly appreciated. Also thank you to Dr. Tsoi and all of St. Joseph’s staff for the compassionate care of Craig.

• In a survey conducted by the Cumberland Farms chain of convenience stores last year, more than half of respondents said they would rather have jury duty for a week than give up coffee for the same length of time. A whopping 69 percent would rather give up alcohol than coffee for a week. • Finland once banned Donald Duck comics because the title character doesn’t wear pants. • You might be surprised to learn that World War II played an important role in the rise of popcorn as a favorite snack at the movies. During the war, the U.S. was cut off from many sugar- exporting nations, causing shortages and rationing on the home front. The scarcity of sugar resulted in a dearth of candy being offered at the box office, causing popcorn sales to skyrocket. • If you live in Georgia, keep in mind that it is illegal to have a picnic in a graveyard in that state. • Given the rise in foodie culture, it’s no wonder that there are a plethora of cookbooks available covering every imaginable kind of comestible. However, you might be surprised to learn just how far back the recording of food preparation goes: One of the earliest known recipes was written on cuneiform tablets and has been dated almost 4,000 years ago to around 1700 B.C. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JANUARY 23, 2015

Jan. 21 dubbed Curling Day in province The Government of Saskatchewan proclaimed Jan. 21 as Curling Day in Saskatchewan. According to a press release released by the province, Curling Day in Saskatchewan encourages citizens to enjoy healthy, active living while playing, watching or learning about their provincial sport. Curling was designated as Saskatchewan’s official sport in 2001 and is enjoyed by more than 20,000 residents in more than 150 curling clubs across the province.

“Curl-

ing is one of Saskatchewan’s most popular pastimes and is something that can be enjoyed by citizens of every age and ability,” parks, culture and sport minister Mark Docherty said in a press release. “Schmirler, Richardson, Holland… Saskatchewan has a rich history where curling is concerned and our government is proud to celebrate and support the growth of our provincial sport. That’s why we offer programs such as the Community Rink Affordability Grant, so that curling rinks

across Saskatchewan may continue to serve as favourite gathering places within our communities.” CURLSASK, who submitted the proclamation for Curling Day in Saskatchewan, hopes the special day will encourage more people to head to their local curling club and experience all what the sport has to offer. “CURLSASK is pleased that the government has declared a provincial day of curling as it will provide us with a chance to recognize and grow our

provincial sport,” noted CURLSASK President Marg Mayotte. “This day gives CURLSASK an opportunity to promote awareness and increase participation in Saskatchewan’s curling clubs.”

This was the first time Curling Day in Saskatchewan is being celebrated across the province. The day reflects Canada’s nationwide declaration of 2015 as the Year of Sport. Declared by His Excellency David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, Year of Sport celebrates the role sports play in

our Canadian identity. Year of Sport highlights Canada’s role as a leading sport nation and recognizes those individuals who have left their legacy through athletic excellence by encouraging citizens to support and participate in sports within their communities.

In September, the Government of Saskatchewan announced that it would offer the Community

Rink Affordability Grant Program for the third year in a row. The Community Rink Affordability Grant Program awards indoor ice facilities, including curling rinks, with a $2,500 grant per ice surface to help offset the costs of facility upgrades and maintenance fees. To date, the government has invested more than $4.8 million in the program.

Our Past January 24, 1990 A crew of more than 35 employees was working on the spillway on the north side of Rafferty Dam when the announcement came through about a work stoppage in order for another review to be conducted. However, work will continue on this project until a three-member board of engineers determines that the work site has been secured. That work could take an extensive period of time.
