When the floods come, the needs are many The warm temperatures also brought with it some stormy weather, which resulted in some flooding and crop damage. Though Estevan wasn’t directly affected this time, Redvers, Gainsborough, Carievale and areas around Regina were reeling from overflowing waters. Some crops surrounding Estevan and Weyburn were facing serious problems.

Over the past several years, Sun Country had has one of the highest coverage rates in the province when it came to health care workers immunizing themselves. Numbers from the Crime Severity Index (CSI) have, for the most part, decreased across the province, however, the big picture continues to show that crime in Saskatchewan is more prominent than in other parts of Canada. Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling The New Year is upon us, but before we set ourselves loose on our New Year’s resolutions that half of us won’t follow through with, a quick look back at the year of 2014 is in order as we – in no particular order – reminisce about the good, the bad, and what’s to come. Community support in Estevan and the surrounding towns is outstanding. I’ve only lived here for about seven months now, but already I’ve seen countless acts of kindness from businesses and individuals. Whether it’s an annual fundraiser like the United Way Telethon or proceeds going to flood relief, the willingness to lend a hand has, during my time here, been unforgettable and heart warming. No matter the weather, people in southeast Saskatchewan show up and get things done and from what I understand, it’s been like this for many years. Let’s keep this up. Speaking of weather, better care of roads within city limits would be appreciated. Winter causes a lot of headaches, especially on the road. This pain subsides a little, however, as one makes his or her way towards the highway, but this same relief should be felt in the Energy City. I’ve seen the roads in Estevan maintained admirably here and there, but why it isn’t done consistently across the city is beyond me. As winter rolls along, let’s try and keep our roads as safe as they can be. The new carbon capture plant that was officially turned on a few months ago reminded me how far away we are from ushering in a new age of energy efficiency. The new facility is an excellent achievement in environmentally sustainable coal power and an admirable step forward for Cenovus Energy Inc., which will use the gas in its enhanced-oil-recovery project. But when countries like Germany – who is ranked number one in energy efficiency by the American Council for an EnergyEfficient Economy - surge forward every year by breaking new ground in its energy standards and policies, Canada drags its feet, lifting its boot every

once in a while to accomplish something impressive like BD3, which ultimately still relies on coal, the furthest thing away from a renewable source. I do not foresee any serious progress being made at a political level when it comes to pushing for alternate energy sources and zeroing in on CO2 emissions, but I do hope people’s mentality steer further away from the carefree attitude many have towards energy consumption. I may sound like that tree-hugging hippie you try and avoid during certain gatherings, but I think a shift in thinking regarding how we consume power could be considered a success story by the end of 2015 if everyone bought in, which right now, isn’t the case. We are heading towards rough times ahead and it’s up to us to soften the inevitable blow to the chops. No matter how far I am from Toronto, the Raptors are on the receiving end of my loud cheers. Their improvement as a team and as a world-class organization continues to bewilder thousands across the world. They will make the playoffs again this year and make it to the third round for the first time in franchise history, further establishing themselves as an elite Canadian team. Excerpt from You Might be from In the gaming world, I hope 2015 Saskatchewan if… Volume 2 treats consumers better than 2014 by Carson Demmans and Jason Sylverstre. did. Though not an outright disaster, 2014 didn’t bring us a whole lot of Sexism is still rampant. Society still points a finger actual games. I look forward to some blockbuster releases that will finally deliver us at victims rather than holding abusers and perpetrathe “next generation” of games some of us have tors accountable. Tiny steps forward like Envision’s been waiting for since the new game consoles anti-cyber violence project and the higher number of workshops at schools highlighting the effects of arrived in late 2013. Perhaps 2015 will also be the year half of online harassment in meaningful ways are worth the world realizes that women can make games noting, but the overall big picture is still engulfed too, and have been for many years. I mention this with ancient points of view that put people with because the online hate mob that emerged during different genders or sexual orientations below the the summer of 2014 under the “Gamergate” banner, rest of society. Once again, progress will only take which targeted female game developers, was highly shape as more people watch the news, stay informed disturbing and another reminder of the growing and educate themselves and their children. I’d like to think that 2015 will be a year of revised perspecpopularity of online abuse. Physical abuse is undoubtedly still around. tives, new goals and exciting achievements.
Animal regulations need to make sense As someone who grew up on a farm, and has covered the agriculture sector as a journalist for some 25 years, I have to say I find myself confused over the seeming wavering line between animal welfare and animal rights. On the one hand,I completely understand the concerns people have, both with the farm community itself and the broader realm of general society, regarding animal welfare. And I fully appreciate the line of acceptability is a moving one. At one point in time gladiatorial between people was acceptable, slavery was accepted, and ideas such as bull baiting, cock fighting and similar combats between animals were common place. That is no longer the case whether, and whether talking about how we deal with one another, or with animals, the above examples are no longer commonly accepted for good reason. So when I read about a group such as Mercy For Animals looking to change the regulations for transporting livestock, it is appreciated what may have once been acceptable no longer may be.
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist Canada does have a Code of Practice for transporting livestock, but it has not been updated since 1991. Any document, which has not been changed in 25 years, is likely to be out-dated. If we think back nearly 25 years, there were still many local meat processors, now gone, which means longer hauls today, so that alone would suggest a good look at modernizing the Code be undertaken. But there is always a nagging fear among those in agriculture that to give an inch in terms of animal welfare will only mean the extremists in the animal rights camp will move the mark and want more. That fear seems warranted. The situation stateside regarding the slaughter of horses is so ridiculous that it has left horses
abandoned in the wild because owners don’t want to be fed an animal that is no longer useful for its intended purpose. That is much like having a good brood cow. At some point when she is no longer a good mother cow, she will end up hamburger. Animal rightists might hold an idyllic vision that one day no one eats meat, all animals are set free and everything is wonderful. But that is a rather over simplistic vision which doesn’t necessarily serve animals very well. Cattle not being raised for milk and meat have little place on a farm, and they would have limited survival instincts in the wild. Chickens would be worse. It is a slim line between opening chicken cages to free hens, and a local population of very fat coyotes and foxes for a time, and no chickens at all. So as we modernize regulations, and evolve what is reasonable in animal husbandry, we also need to remain diligent that the radical fringe does not hijack the process and leave us with regulations lacking in common sense.
