Cheers to the ladies who went out with roses on Halloween night to do some reverse trick or treating. Such a nice gesture and a pleasant surprise! May your random acts of kindness be rewarded!

Cheers to our new Fire Chief Shane Code. Your credentials and accomplishments are very impressive and we are lucky to have you. You are joining a fabulous fire department. Welcome to Estevan. Cheers to local businesses for advertising Samaritan’s Purse. After all, that is where the items are bought to fill the shoeboxes. Cheers to the group of immigrants who serenaded us with songs and went door to door, raising money to send back to their children back home. You made our evening.

Jeers to the local fast food restaurant for false advertising on the high school discount cards. Your 15 per cent discount is more like 5 per cent when it’s all said and done.

Jeers to the person who hit my parked vehicle in the No Frills parking lot this past week and left the scene of the accident without being an adult and reporting it or at least leaving a note. You left me with a nice bill to fix my vehicle. It’s people like you who give no hope for honesty in society. Jeers to the facility I work for that preaches that you should not come to work sick, but if you stay home, you are reprimanded by getting a “letter.”

Invisible pain brings hardship An inexplicable disorder has left a mother of four in continuous pain, and with no shortterm solution, a gofundme page is currently her only form of support outside of four daughters and close friends. Andrea Thomson lives in Fillmore and suffers from fibromyalgia, a rare musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder that affects her muscles, tendons and ligaments. She was diagnosed in 2013, but has been dealing with symptoms for a number of years. The pain is minimized with the help of medication, but there is no cure. “You’re always in pain and always tired,” she said. “Taking a shower can really hurt, even the TV, which may sound normal to others can actually sound really loud to me.” She noted fibromyalgia includes up to 200 symptoms and prevents her from doing long-distance driving and strenuous activities. Thomson’s friend Tracey Jones, who is a local librarian, set up a gofundme page for Thomson and her daughters. “She’s a very good friend of mine and she has helped me spread the

message online” she said. Thomson works part time for Oasis Day Home from her house and is currently babysitting one child. She’s requested disability leave three times but has been denied, she said, because of a lack of information surrounding fibromyalgia. Her monthly income of $500 covers the bare minimum of expenses, and searching for alternate employment opportunities has proven difficult due to the pain she endures on a daily basis. The combination of being a mother, a babysitter and having to deal with her symptoms has become an increasingly difficult day-to-day routine, she said, one she has to endure as a singlemother. “It’s extremely frustrating,” she said. Thomson is on a twoyear waiting list for a rheumatologist, but with each passing day, she grows increasingly worried about her situation. “ I t ke e p s g e t t i n g worse, and whenever the weather goes from one extreme to another, that’s when it really knocks the ground out from under me,” she explained. Her daughters have

come to grips with her disorder and provide her with support at home. Thomson’s oldest daughter Chelsey, 18, said it hasn’t become any easier to watch her mother deal with the pain, despite being near the situation for years. “You wonder what you can do to help, but there’s nothing really nothing you can do,” she said. “It’s hard being in that situation, because you want to do something about it.” Although Chelsey isn’t able to provide her mother with medical assistance, she said she has taken on more responsibilities at home. “When she’s down and out, I take care of the girls and keep the house clean,” she said, adding any fun her mother tries to have with her daughters often results in an entire day dedicated to recuperation from pain. The confusion and misconception surrounding fibromyalgia has been perhaps the most difficult thing for the oldest daugther to handle, she said, as people outside of the family frequently assume her mother is dealing with something less serious. “Some people say, ‘oh it’s just in her head, she’s

just being lazy,’” she said. “I just try to explain to them what she’s actually dealing with, that she is in pain, but it’s such a rare disease, it’s hard to put in words.” Thomson has been ferociously battling fibromyalgia, but noted it has taken a toll on her physically and mentally. “It is an invisible dis-

adult male driver and lone occupant of the semi-tractor trailer from Edmonton, Alberta did not sustain any injuries. The Coroner from Weyburn attended the scene. An RCMP collision reconstructionist and several members of the Estevan traffic services unit

initially blocked and rerouted traffic around the collision scene, but Highway 13 has since been reopened. With the assistance of the collision reconstructionist Carlyle RCMP continue to investigate the cause of the accident.

“I guess, you just have to try and pace yourself,” she said. “There are days when you feel fine, but if you’re not careful with what you do, you’ll go through days and days and days of straight pain.” If you would like to make a donation to Thomson’s gofundme page, visit gofundme.com/g7qpa0

Vehicle collision leaves one man dead A two-vehicle collision on Highway 13 left one 61-year-old male driver dead on Nov. 7. Initial investigation has revealed that a westbound semi-tractor trailer was struck by a pickup truck travelling east in the westbound lane. The 28-year-old

ease that has defeated me. I was once able to do so many things, but the pain limits me in so many ways,” she said. When asked what her advice was to others suffering from fibromyalgia, a brief silence filled the air as she searched for an answer. It was difficult to find.

The art of coaching The play is made on the playing field, but it’s drawn up on the sidelines. A few coaching gigs I obtained recently have made me pay more attention to what the person with the whiteboard has to do with a team’s success. When I watch a game on TV, I find myself reading the coaches’ lips in hopes of discovering what the words of wisdom are. I’m not very good at it reading lips yet, but I have made some interesting observations. Obviously, the coach has a lot to do with success, but it fascinates me how in professional sports, the words of a 50-year-old man can fuel a bunch of millionaires to snap out of a funk and elevate their game in order to win. It’s no secret a lot of pro players do not like what they do. Others enjoy playing a certain sport for money, but not enough to care about winning. They show up, they go through the motions and then cap the day off with a wonderful nap, knowing the next day holds a lovely cheque worth more than what many make in a year. Few players have that drive to be the best and to be a leader, and it must be difficult for a coach to motivate those who aren’t eating, sleeping and breathing basketball, or hockey, football, whatever. I think even fewer coaches have the ability to stick to their guns and follow through with a system they truly believe in, despite it not working all the time with a certain group of

Alex Coop

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling players. These days, coaches don’t get a lot of time to help a team succeed. If positive results don’t arise through a system the coach wants to use, he or she is fired or forced to try something else. There are certainly other factors at work within the organization that contribute to team success. General managers, the one’s who do a good job anyway, usually sign players who have that aforementioned passion for the sport, thus making the coach’s job a little easier. Things don’t always work out that way, of course, and even when it does, slumps are bound to happen. Some coaches provide their team with a tongue lashing in these instances, others take an approach similar to former Lakers head coach Phil Jackson’s, who was aptly named the Zen Master for his cool and calm demeanor, even when the situation on the court was approaching catastrophic levels, which was a rare occurrence. The few seconds of action on the playing field after a timeout can say so much about a team’s focus, attention to detail and respect for a coach. Do the players execute a drawn up play to perfec-

tion? Sometimes they don’t, and the resulting failure is frequently nothing short of astounding, as players look like the Looney Tunes from Space Jam before they drank Michael Jordan’s magic juice of courage. Interestingly enough, I find it more common to see a team outside of the professional scene that has minimal talent on the offensive end due to a lack of athleticism, finesse and size, succeed despite those shortcomings. Defense, in my opinion, can be learned and mastered by ANY group of players. Despite the problems a team has scoring a goal, a point, a touchdown, if you prevent the other team from scoring, you have a much better chance of winning. Our junior high school basketball team was made up of a bunch of skinny white boys - except for one guy named Bobby, he gave out bear hugs - who played hockey and knew nothing about basketball. My friend and I were the only two who played the game on a regular basis outside of school. Our coach Larry Johns recognized this, ran the offense through my friend and I, and taught the entire team how

You might be from Saskatchewan if...

Excerpt from You Might be from Saskatchewan if… Volume 2 by Carson Demmans and Jason Sylverstre. to play defense. He stressed defense his entire life. He knew the team consisted of a bunch of rugged hockey players and encouraged them to utilize that toughness on the defensive end of the court. He explained to everyone how much they could get away with in terms of body contact, he honed everyone’s communication skills and made sure everyone could at least catch a pass, make a pass, and hit free throws. That year, everyone bought in to what our coach was saying through his

perfect mix of soothing tones, snappy one liners and occasional screaming. Our team was undefeated during the regular season, unbeatable in the playoffs, and we won the Central Western Ontario title for the first time in over 50 years. Trust your coaches. Some may have a history of losing, others may operate in a body that does not resemble an affiliation with athletics of any kind, but that doesn’t mean the passion for success isn’t there.

Grain transportation still requires tweaking Grain transportation is obviously a huge issue for farmers. That has been the case for decades in reality, and clearly that was brought into a much tighter focus in the 2013-14 crop year in the face of the largest crop in the history of the Canadian Prairies. The massive crop, of course, contributed to the extreme bottleneck farmers faced in trying to get grain to market, although the rail companies weren’t exactly doing a bang up job in terms of the getting grain moving through the system. The result was that while there were foreign markets which came calling for product, the system simply couldn’t get grain from the farm gate to port position in anywhere near a timely fashion to make all the sales come to fruition. In the end, the situation forced the federal government to implement regulations, which set targets for CP and CN in terms of weekly grain movements to deal with the grain congestion backlog. It helped in terms of moving the glut through the system, although it was far from a perfect

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist solution. Forcing movements based on gross tonnage targets is simply not the best way to meet the intricacies of the grain system. So it was with some definite interest I read the Grain Millers Harvest Showdown Grains Expo was holding a panel discussion of grain transportation. The panel was made up of people representing various sectors of the grain industry. It was an opportunity to hopefully hear some fresh ideas about how to address the transportation problem long term. However, the panel focused most of their times trotting out ideas which have been talked about before with little impact. One speaker spoke of a need for a strong

livestock sector, and more processing on the Prairies to divert grain from export, and reliance on rail service. The hog sector saw high efficiency barns spring up a number of years ago, based on availability of grain, labour and land. It was a common sense idea, but the industry ended up awash in red ink as labour and grain prices climbed. It’s not coming back anytime soon. The feedlot sector fared little better. A facility in Rhein was Business of the Year for the Yorkton Chamber of Commerce one year and out of business a few short years later. As for processing, that was supposed to come when the old ‘Crow Rate’ for export grain was dismantled. It didn’t happen. Now the end of the single-desk selling of export grain by the Canadian Wheat Board is supposed to fire processing development. That is yet to be seen, but it is likely to fall short of creating a major dent in grain headed to export any time soon. And there were other old chestnuts too, but we’ll hold those for part two next week.

The Saskatchewan 21 Day Calving Challenge Cow herd reproduction is the most important factor affecting the profitability of Saskatchewan Beef Producers. It is five times more important than growth rate and ten times more important than carcass quality when it comes to contributing income to the ranch. That is why the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Services Branch, New Life Mills, Saltec – Ceres Industries, and Cargill are hosting a Saskatchewan 21 Day Calving Challenge Contest – to raise awareness surrounding cow herd reproduction and tracking reproductive success. One of the simplest ways to track the reproductive success of a cow-calf herd is to graph a calving distribution. This is simply a calculation of how many calves are born in each 21 day period of the calving season. Calving distribution is important because it is the only easily accessible reproductive event in a cow-calf herd. In most herds, we don’t know the exact breeding dates for each cow unless we are using artificial insemination. The only reproductive event that is easy to track is the cow’s calving date. To create a calving distribution, count the cows that have calved during the first 21 days of the calving season. Divide this number by the total number of cows that calve in the season and multiply by 100 to get the percentage of cows calving in the first 21 days. Repeat this process for each of the next two 21 day periods. The goal is to have at least 60 per cent of the herd

Graph courtesy of the Government of Saskatchewan calving in the first 21 day period of the season. There are several reasons why achieving the goal of 60 per cent of cows calving in the first 21 days of the calving season is important. Early calving cows stay on track. Cows that are cycling and get bred in the first 21 days of the breeding season are more likely to be cycling and bred at the start of the next breeding season, provided that they are in good body condition and receiving adequate nutrition. Cows that calve in the first 21 days will wean heavier calves. Every time a cow misses a 21 day breeding cycle it could reduce weaning weight by 50 pounds. Heifer calves born in the first 21 days that are

retained as replacement heifers are heavier and more likely to be cycling as a yearling heifer. Having a large proportion of calves born in the first 21 day period also creates a more even and uniform calf crop, simplifying management procedures and results in a marketing advantage. Most cow-calf producers have a calving book in their pockets at calving time. This simple record keeping system can tell you more than which calf belongs to which cow. The Saskatchewan 21 Day Calving Challenge invites producers to record, measure and evaluate their calving season to see how their herd stacks up on reproduction and profitability. In taking the 21 Day Calving Challenge,

producers will be provided with a calving book to record the coming calving season and guide them in calculating their calving distribution percentages. In addition to providing a place for record keeping, the calving book is full of great production, nutrition and reproduction information. To participate in this contest, producers need to fill out the tear away entry form at the back of the official calving book and send it in to enter the draw for one of three $1,000 vouchers for mineral supplement for their cow herd. The Saskatchewan 21 Day Calving Challenge contest is sponsored by New Life Mills, Saltec – Ceres Industries and Cargill. The contest ends June 1, 2015. For more information, or to

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2014

What is your approach to each new season? At the start of a season I’m looking at the players that are coming in and what positions are going to work for them. How are they going to work together to benefit each other’s strengths? I try and find out where new players will fit in with the returning players. Does your approach change from year to year? For myself, because it’s a pre-k to 12 school, a lot of our players coming into high school are elementary kids so I have a pretty good idea as to who is coming in for the most part. It would change if I didn’t have a clue, it would be more like ‘let’s see what you got.’ For the most part though, I know what athletes I’m getting. What does the first practice consist of for your team? Basically skill development, getting back into the swing of things they likely haven’t contact a volleyball in quite some time. I try and get their muscle memory back and

see where they are in terms of skill level and determine whether we need to focus on those skills or go right into strategy. Do you do any one on one training? I’m a big proponent of mostly team stuff, I do very little one on one. We do a lot of game situation set pieces. How do you deal with a loss? Immediately after every game we have a post-game meeting regardless whether it’s a win or a loss. In the case of a loss we’ll quickly talk about some of the things that occurred. We take stats every game so we can see that, maybe we didn’t pass very well or something, and then we look at how we can have a different outcome the next time around. We go to a bunch of tournaments throughout the year, but everything is building towards provincials, so in my mind every scenario is practice until then. How can we learn from every situation?

What does a timeout consist of during a poor stretch in a game? For the most part, the athletes know what is going on and know what needs to happen but I’ll call a timeout to try and change the pace of the game or get them to think of a few things they maybe haven’t thought of. Basically, during the game I’ll be making notes about things I want to talk

What is your favourite part about coaching? A lot of it is interacting with the student athletes, getting to know them well and seeing them achieve something they think is above their ability. Seeing them do something that they’ve been working on, then seeing them master a skill, for instance, is great to see.

about, things I’ve noticed during play. But if we’re on a skid and I call a timeout, it’s usually something quick, I’ll draw up a play in terms of how we’re going to get out of this rotation. I try and frame it in as positive a manner as possible. I won’t tell them what I don’t want them to do but instead, tell them what I need them to go out and do. For me, a timeout is used to refocus athletes and or if they’re down on themselves, help them realize that there’s a way out of the situation.

Gutenberg leads Bruins over Wings It really was a day to remember for 18-year-old Bruins netminder Tyler Gutenberg as he blanked the Weyburn Red Wings for his first SJHL shutout Tuesday afternoon in Weyburn at Crescent Point Place. The game was scoreless goaltenders battle until Darcy DeRoose scored off a rebound with 4:18 left in regulation. The Bruins then scored a pair of empty net goals, one from DeRoose and one shorthanded by Keaton Longpre. Shots on goal were 35-28 for Weyburn. The Bruins (6-11-0-3) and Wings (6-11-3-0) are tied for last place in the SJHL standings. On Sunday, meanwhile, the Nipawin Hawks scored three goals in a span of less than two minutes early in the third period on Sunday to hand the Bruins a 5-2 loss at Affinity Place. The Bruins led 2-1 after the first two periods. “We let them back in the game. We were going to the third with a 2-1 lead and 19 minutes on the clock

and we’re down a goal. We’ve gotta do a better job of keeping pucks out of our net,” said Bruins head coach Chris Lewgood. Brandan Arnold and Evan Mignault beat Bruins starter Brett Lewchuk nine seconds apart in the first minute of the third. Shortly after that, Eric Bolden put one past Lewchuk off the rush, which resulted in Tyler Gutenberg entering the game between the pipes. Following the three goals, the Bruins enjoyed eight minutes of power play time, but couldn’t capitalize, despite getting some chances. “It was very frustrating,” said Lewgood. “Early on, I thought the problem with the power play was we weren’t penetrating the seams very well and creating chances and getting pucks to the net. “We made some adjustments and started getting some shots, and unfortunately we weren’t firm enough to get rebounds. Our zone time on the power play tonight was really

good. Our puck movement was really good. Our execution on finishing plays wasn’t very good.” Keegan Kjargaard added an insurance marker with four minutes to play, scoring glove side. “We gotta be better. It should have been a 2-0 win today. That’s the way I saw the game,” said Lewgood after the Sunday contest. “There are things we can improve on all the way around. Our team cannot allow five goals. You can make any excuses as to why we did, but the bottom line is if we’re in the offensive zone on the cycle, the other team’s not going to score.” The Bruins took an early 2-0 lead in the first period. First, R.T. Rice got around defender Nicholas Reimer, went in alone and went forehand on Hawks starter Logan Flodell. Shortly after that, Levi Barnstable was tripped up by Hawks defenceman Stefan Wood, but got the puck on net. Moments later, Barnstable flipped a shot off Wood, ⇢ Pg.12 Bruins

Bruins out shoot Hawks in loss ⇠ Pg. 7 up over Flodell and in the net. Garret Lockeridge got the Hawks on the board with 35 seconds left in the period off the rush. Lewchuk allowed four goals on 23 shots, while Gutenberg allowed one on four shots. The Bruins outshot the Hawks 34-27. Top prospect Riley Woods, 16, joined the Bru-

ins as an affiliated player despite forwards Adam Canepa, Ryan Duret and Mahlon Head being healthy scratches. “I thought he was good. I thought he had some breakdowns, but that’s to be expected. I thought he fit in nicely 5-on-5 with a couple of pretty good hockey players (Keegan Allison and Lynnden Pastachak). He complemented them very

well. On the power play, he made some things happen,” said Lewgood. “I wish he had a little more confidence in himself to shoot. As a 16-year-old coming in as an AP, you kinda want to dish the puck off. You don’t want to be caught overhandling it. So I think he passed up on a couple of opportunities to shoot where he was probably the best guy to take the shot.”

Bruins forward Jason Duret took a puck to the face on Nov. 4 against Melville and required minor surgery on his nose on Monday. He is expected to miss about 10 days. The Bruins are last in the SJHL in goals by a significant margin, averaging less than two goals per game. “The ideal scenario is you get more goal scorers. But realistically, we just got-

ta stick to it. The guys work hard on scoring in practice. It’s something we’ve spent time on in practice. Our guys are not missing the net in practice. If they are, they’re doing pushups. Our guys are committed to finishing better and putting the work in to be a better

team. You just gotta stick with it and as a general manager, you’ve gotta try to add some scoring touch,” Lewgood said. The Bruins are on the road this weekend, visiting the Hawks for a rematch tonight and the Melfort Mustangs on Saturday.

Rural News Two new doctors practice in Sun Country Health Two new family physicians are now practicing in Carlyle and Kipling as a result of the Saskatchewan International Physician Practice Assessment (SIPPA) program. Dr. Al-Khafaji (Carlyle) and Dr. Jayeoba (Kipling) join many other International Medical Graduate (IMG) colleagues already practicing in Saskatchewan. The SIPPA is a program based in Saskatchewan that assesses IMGs on their education and clinical ability before allowing them to perform medicine. More than 150 new family physicians have completed the assessment and have fulfilled or are fulfilling their service commitment to the province. “We welcome these new physicians to reinforce our strong and growing province,” Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. “While our first priority is to recruit graduates from the University of Saskatch-

ewan, we rely on international graduates to help us meet the health care needs of our residents.” “I recognize the continuing need to have more family physicians serving patients across Saskatchewan, and I am encouraged by the success of these latest SIPPA graduates,” Medical Director of SIPPA for the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan Dr. Jon Witt said in a press release. “SIPPA is proving to be one valuable avenue we can use to address our need for more family doctors. I am very pleased to be working with our rural communities, saskdocs and the province to provide IMGs with opportunities to live and work in Saskatchewan.” “The saskdocs team was pleased to work with Sun Country Health Region, our SIPPA program partners, community leaders and other physicians to recruit these doctors,” noted saskdocs’ CEO Dr. Dennis Kendel. In addition, a total

of 20 new IMGs are now completing their clinical field assessments as part of the program’s September intake. If successful, these physicians will begin practicing across the province later this winter. In collaboration with the health regions, saskdocs

will recruit physicians through direct recruitment initiatives, establishing relationships with medical students and residents, local, national and international advertising, and attending career fairs at home and abroad. Family physician IMGs

seeking more information on SIPPA and the opportunities currently available are encouraged to contact

saskdocs at info@saskdocs. ca or call toll-free (in North America) 1-888-415-3627 or 306-933-5000.

Changes to organ donor program The province of Saskatchewan hopes to respond more quickly to growing organ transplant demands through a new legislation governing organ and tissue donations. The changes contained in The Human Tissue Gift Act, 2014, will modernize outdated legislation and provide the ability to make and update regulations, according to a press release from the government of Saskatchewan. The purchase of corneas will potentially come from outside Saskatchewan, enabling more of the approximately 100 Saskatchewan residents typically waiting for a cornea transplant to receive the

life-changing procedure in months rather than years. “We have the opportunity to remove impediments that delay livesaving or life-enhancing transplants for Saskatchewan,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan said in the release. “We owe it to those who face a decline in their health while they wait for a transplant.” The need for organ and tissue transplants in Saskatchewan far exceeds the number of donors. “These changes will

help us get much-needed organs and tissue to our patients, and will have a huge impact not only on their own lives but on also the lives of their family members,” Saskatchewan Transplant Program Director Diane Shendruk said. “This is a positive step forward for transplant services in our province.” The new Act will enable Saskatchewan to stay current with changing practices in Canada and internationally, in order to better serve patients.
