The Other Side

The Other Side of Trauma is the fourth book by Marie Calder, detailing the experiences of her father, during and after the Second World War. The latest installment in “The Other Side” series follows life for Calder’s uncle back home dealing with shell shock, or post-traumatic stress disorder. The fifth book is expected in a month, as Calder continues to write book six.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Impatience is still somewhat of a problem. But a sign of progress should soothe the anxious Aries heart. Meanwhile, invest some of that waiting time in preparing for the change ahead. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Bovines tend to excel at solving problems, not creating them. But you risk doing just that if you’re slow to respond to a timely situation. If necessary, seek advice from someone you trust. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The Gemini Twin might need to do more than a routine check of both a job-linked and home-based situation. Dig deeper for more data on both fronts to avoid unwanted surprises later. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Moon Children facing an important workplace decision are encouraged to use their perceptiveness to see through any attempt to win them over with a supercharge of fawning and flattery. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Good news catapults Leos and Leonas into reconsidering a deferred decision. But time has moved on, and it’s a good idea to recheck your plans and make adjustments where necessary. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The week favors relationships, both personal and professional. Take the time to look for and immediately repair any vulnerable areas caused by unresolved misunderstandings. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A friend’s problems bring out your protective instincts. Be careful to keep a balance between meeting the obligations of friendship without being overwhelmed by them. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The temptation to take an extreme position on an issue is strong, but moderation is favored both in personal and professional dealings. Move toward finding areas

of agreement. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Getting another boss or teacher? Try to see the person behind the image. It will help you adjust more easily to the changes that new authority figures inevitably bring. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Much as you might dislike the idea, keep an open mind about using the assistance of a third party to help resolve problems that threaten to unravel an important agreement. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Music helps restore the Aquarian’s spiritual energies this week. Take someone you care for to a concert of your musical choice. Also, expect news about a workplace matter. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A challenge that seems easy enough at first could take an unexpected turn that might test your resolve. Decide if you feel

you should stay with it, or if it’s better to move in another direction. BORN THIS WEEK:

Perspective Expressed Opinions Jordan Baker Estevan Mercury Reporter

Hoping playoff stories veer from season’s It’s been a long hockey season shrouded in the controversy of concussions and headshots despite what Brian Burke told me three weeks ago when he was in Estevan, blaming the non-sports media for sensationalizing the situation. Sure there were some great stories this year in the NHL. Look at the first half of Sidney Crosby’s season. He had 32 goals and 66 points in the first 41 games of the season. The problem is, he didn’t have a second half to his season, missing the next 41 games. For those who aren’t great at math, myself included, so I used a calculator to make sure, that is 132 points in the 82-game regular season Crosby would have posted had he played and continued that pace. No player has topped 132 points since the 1995-96 season, in which Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr did it playing with the same Pittsburgh Penguins. They recorded 161 and 149 points, respectively. A big story coming out of Montreal at the start of the season was the spectacular play by goaltender Carey Price after the Canadiens dropped last year’s playoff wonder boy, Jaroslav Halak in the offseason, declaring Price the franchise starter. Then a Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty broke his neck and suffered a concussion. That incident received a lot more passionate conversation than the play of the goaltender. Tim Thomas, the old-timer between the Boston Bruins pipes, lost his starting job last season after winning the Vezina Trophy the year before. This year he rebounded, won the starting job again and then posted the highest save percentage ever recorded in a single season: .938. The previous record was held by Dominik Hasek with a .937.

Page 4

Where did concussions plague the Bruins? Well forward Marc Savard didn’t play until December, after suffering a concussion toward the end of last season in March 2010. Savard, who has scored more than 700 career points, played 25 games after coming back, only to suffer another concussion at the end of January. He hasn’t played since, and retirement, at 33, is looking like his best option. The Vancouver Canucks led the league in points this year, winning the President’s Trophy. The Sedin twins worked their magic, just as Henrik led the league in points last year, brother Daniel won the Art Ross this year. Also, defenceman Dan Hamhuis, who finished top 10 in league plus/minus, was diagnosed with two concussions this season. After the first, he spoke to the media about the long-term effects concussions have on the brain, which we are now learning about thanks to research being done on deceased football players. He said he spoke to family members and that if he received another concussion, retiring is something the 28-year-old would have to seriously consider. After missing five games as a result of his first one, he started playing again, and one month later he had a second one. He missed another five games before coming back. Players get concussed every season, and that is never going to change. But a couple of years ago, players were told to rest and come back when they felt better, or to just take a Tylenol. Now we’re learning a concussion at 25 could mean some serious health problems at 50. That’s why concussions are the story of the NHL this year. I love hockey. I’m pretty hockey savvy, but unfortunately that’s what I remember most about the season. Now cheer up, playoffs are here, and I’m hoping for some great non-concussion storylines.

Today red and green lentils are important crops, and as farmers have grown more lentils, they have found a way onto store shelves and into our diets. Of course the export market is driving the expansion of pulse crops in Saskatchewan and Canada too. Canadian green lentil exports to India in 2009-10 amounted to 283,995 tonnes, up from 67,999 the previous year. In India and other countries in the region, pulses are the main source of protein, and as the economies strengthen there will be increased demand for protein. Raonic looks to get spot at French Open NATIONAL TORONTO - The demands of the Ontario Athletics Commission have drawn a few grumbles already from mixed martial arts fighters. But the required upto-date medical tests drew praise Tuesday when a mandated MRI revealed American welterweight Brian Foster had a brain hemorrhage. Coach Marc Fiore said the 27-year-old father of three feels fine, but faces a stressful six weeks before another MRI can show whether the problem has cleared up. *** MONACO, Monaco - Canadian Milos Raonic welcomes a Thursday rematch with fourth-seeded clay ace David Ferrer for a place in the Monte Carlo Masters quarter-finals. Ferrer, who beat fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-2, 6-0 on Wednesday, defeated Raonic on hardcourt at the Australian Open in Melbourne in their only previous meeting. The Spaniard is ranked sixth in the world, compared to No. 34 for Raonic. The 20-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., goes into the match boosted by the

confidence he’s set for a move into the ATP top-30, guaranteeing him a seeding at the French Open. *** TORONTO - The conversation will go a little differently when the braintrust of the Edmonton Oilers sits down to decide on this No. 1 draft pick. Essentially, the team had to decide between two players before selecting Taylor Hall a year ago. The decision promises to be a little more complex in June. “I could list you six players that our people are extremely excited about,” Oilers GM Steve Tambellini said after Tuesday’s draft lottery. “They’re all

very good and they’re all a little bit different this year, which makes it a unique draft. It’ll be interesting. INTERNATIONAL SAN FRANCISCO Jurors in the Barry Bonds case remained mostly out of sight on the third day of their deliberations. They never entered Judge Susan Illston’s courtroom on the 19th floor of the Phillip Burton Federal Building, spending about six hours behind closed doors Tuesday without reaching a verdict. Except for a couple of quick breaks and a timeout for lunch, that was it. No questions for the judge. No readbacks of

testimony. And no clues as to which way, if any, the eight women and four men who will decide the homerun king’s fate are leaning. *** ZURICH - World Cup winner Spain stayed top of the FIFA rankings and the previous two champions, Brazil and Italy, rose in the top 10 on Wednesday. World Cup beaten

finalist the Netherlands remained No. 2, and Brazil climbed two places to No. 3. Brazil overtook archrival Argentina after beating Scotland 2-0 in a friendly. Germany, which lost a home friendly against Australia, fell one spot to No. 4. Argentina dropped to fifth after drawing friendlies against the United States

and Costa Rica. Italy ended a sevenmonth exile from the top 10. The 2006 World Cup winner rose two places to No. 9 following wins last month against Slovenia in a European Championships qualifier and a friendly in Ukraine. Canada, fresh from a 1-0 win in Belarus, moved up nine places to No. 75.

Judge rules medical marijuana program unconstitutional NATIONAL TORONTO - News reports say an Ontario Superior Court judge has ruled that the medical marijuana program is unconstitutional and has given Ottawa three months to fix the rules. Justice Donald Taliano found that sick people cannot get access to medical marijuana through appropriate means and must resort to illegal actions. He says that brands ill people who should be able to get the drugs as criminals. The St. Catharines justice declared the program to be invalid, as well as the laws prohibiting possession and production of cannabis. *** VANCOUVER - The City of Vancouver has gone on the defensive to battle suggestions the Olympic Village will saddle city taxpayers with a legacy of debt. The village was once touted by the mayor as the city’s prized jewel, but officials spent nearly two hours with reporters on Tuesday

going over detailed and never-before released figures to explain the project’s financial losses. It was a tightly-managed meeting that started with a news release inviting media to city hall “due to misinformation published” in local media. It also prohibited journalists from posting information online or to social media during the briefing. When the technical portion was over, city manager Penny Ballem asserted the project is not a boondoggle. INTERNATIONAL SENDAI, Japan Flights to the Japanese coastal city of Sendai are resuming, just over a month after a 32-foot (10-meter) tsunami swamped the runways of its airport. Sendai airport staff stood waving on the tarmac Wednesday as passengers emerged from a JAL Express flight. It was the first plane to land since the March 11 earthquake and

tsunami, which swept cars and planes into terminals and turned the area into a muddy wasteland. The airport is handling only a few daytime flights. Still, its reopening is a boost for recovery efforts in the area, where many communities have been virtually obliterated by the tsunami. Meanwhile, Japan’s leaders are urging citizens to focus on rebuilding despite delays in resolving the country’s nuclear crisis. *** IVORY COAST - Five generals pledged their loyalty to President Alassane Ouattara following the capture of the country’s strongman leader after a four-month standoff, as French and Ivorian forces worked to eliminate the last pockets of resistance. Ouattara’s spokesman Patrick Achi confirmed Tuesday that the generals who had been fighting on Laurent Gbagbo’s side right up until his capture swore allegiance before Ouat-

Top five tips for a celebrity-worthy glow

Say Goodbye to Your Old Size!

Celebrities always look flawless, whether it is their hair, make-up or clothes. But, often their most coveted accessory is perfectly golden, glowing skin. While you may not have the time to get that perfect tan or have the team of professional stylists at your disposal, you can incorporate a few additional steps to add a little celebrity flair into your beauty regimen. Dr. Sandy Skotnicki, Kao Brands’ dermatologist and medical director of the Bay Dermatology Centre in Toronto reveals what celebrities are doing and how you can achieve a gorgeous A-lister inspired glow: 1. Exfoliate your skin weekly. Most celebrities are getting micro-dermabrasion treatments to keep their skin looking its best. Exfoliating at home two-to-three times a week will keep your skin looking radiant. 2. Always wash your make-up off before you go to bed and use a toner to even out skin tone. 3. Always wear sunscreen to prevent sun damage and wrinkles. Try Jergens natural glow daily facial moisturizer for a natural-looking, gradual looking glow while protecting skin with full-spectrum SPF 20.

4. Stay hydrated. Tiredlooking skin is often caused by dehydration. Ensure that you are drinking six to eight glasses of water, avoid soda and apply moisturizer daily. Choose a moisturizer that has double duty benefits like Jergens natural glow. It contains vitamin E to keep skin hydrated and a Glow Perfecting complexto gradually add natural looking colour while moisturizing your skin. 5. Give yourself a minifacial weekly. Celebrities

have the luxury of incorporating facials into their weekly routine. Try a DIY facial by steaming your skin. Soak a clean face cloth in hot water and lemon and drape it over your face. This will help to bring any impurities to the surface and keep skin looking supple, even and clean. We may not have the perks that celebrities have, but it is possible to achieve flawless-looking skin by incorporating these tips into your daily beauty routine.

Ditch hair removal headaches Benckiser, the makers of Veet. “It’s unfortunate because hair removal creams can be easy to use, effective and don’t have to smell bad or be harsh on the skin. We want women to know they can get back to using creams without worry. For example, our new Suprem’Essence Hair Removal Gel Cream is enriched with a blend of essential oils and velvet rose fragrance, which is sure to leave skin smooth, moisturized and delicately scented.”

Time is of the essence. With places to go and people to see, women are looking for fast and effective methods for all their personal care needs. Hair removal sits top of most women’s to-do lists, especially in the warmer months. However, with a slew of hair removal options available, women can have a hard time choosing a product that might be right for them. How about hair removal creams? This method is fast and effective, and thanks to advancements in formulas and smells, women can now love them as much as they love their body lotions and perfumes.

Upgrade your wardrobe for free You stand in your skivvies at your open closet, frowning slightly as your old clothes gaze frostily back at you, almost mocking you and your low purchasing power. You know you desperately need a new outfit, but you don’t have the time or money to deal with it – especially when you’re already running late in the morning. If you live with a parent or sibling who has great taste in clothes and wears the same size, you’ll have no qualms about raiding their closets. But most of us will end up resorting to selecting a tried-and-true outfit that “works” – even if it’s your second time wearing it in a week. To spice up your closet and avoid regularly hijacking your sibling’s clothing, host an eco-friendly clothes swap party. Here’s how it works: 1) Rummage through your closet and sort out any items that either don’t

each participant and have them arrange their clothes in a neat display. Once everyone is set up, start shopping. Tell participants to start at the next numeric station from their own. The person with the highest station number starts at the lowest number. For example, if 15 people are participating, the person at station 15 will begin at station 1. 7) Allow each person

to spend one minute per station, selecting one item only. 8) Donate any leftover clothing to a local charity. By the end of the party, you’ll have 10 or more new items to accessorize and spruce up your look. Best of all, you’ll be helping your friends to not only look good, but feel good too as they help local and international charities.

Eat and Lose Weight (Really!) It may seem ironic, but the best way to lose weight (and keep it off) is to eat. Starvation diets never work. Here’s why: • People who significantly reduce calories find that their weight loss stalls. When they start eating again their weight increases, often above their start weight. • When calories are significantly reduced, our bodies adapt and go into what nutritionists call “starvation mode”. Metabolism slows down as a safety mechanism, and the body retains any and all sources of energy that it can — particularly fat. It’s no surprise that most successful weight loss and maintenance programs involve a well-balanced selection of foods from all food groups with a modest reduction of calories so the body still needs to draw on its fat stores as a source of energy. When choosing a program, look for the following elements: • Portion control: Human appetite is elastic — the more food we receive, the more we eat. Great food with smaller portions is the right approach.

WEYBURN CLIENT

60 POUNDS and 71 inches* "It gave me the knowledge and tools I needed to eat healthier and understand how my body reacts to outside factors like stress and emotion. The best part of the program was a toss up between the support and encouragement provided by the staff, and the fact that the program is based on regular food available at the grocery store. Herbal Magic has given me my old-self back and a newly found sense of confidence and self worth."

• Food plans incorporating all food groups: Healthy weight loss is the only sustainable weight loss. Your body needs vitamins and nutrients from proteins, fats and carbohydrates. • Three meals a day, and never more than six hours between meals. Healthy snacks between meals are great as well. Your metabolism is a true biological clock — it depends on calories at regular intervals. Herbal Magic programs consist of well-balanced food plans with grocery-store bought food, based on modest calorie reduction and appropriate natural products to stop cravings, increase metabolism and reduce appetite. Our Personal Health Coaches will support you through this process and are with you every step of the way.

Buy a Mystic, get 1 half off!

Update your spring wardrobe – for less than $100 Putting some sizzle into your summer style need not be elusive or expensive. According to Tammy Palmer (www.tammypalmer.com), seasoned fashion stylist and former Flare magazine senior market editor, women can update their wardrobes this summer for as little as under $100 with three simple tips: 1. Shop your closet. White pants, khakis and solid sundresses in bold brights like tangerine or subdued hues are the perfect foundation pieces for this season. Simple tricks like rolling pants to the ankle, adding a boldly coloured skinny belt or printed scarf can repurpose these pieces for summer 2011. 2. Embrace retro: For a quick update, cork wedges, clogs, homespun style vests, wide–leg pants and embroidered tunics are a great way to embrace this season's love of the 70s and boho chic. “When it comes to very

Six simple tips to healthy skin Getting fantastic, radiant skin doesn’t have to mean spending hundreds of dollars at the spa. Simply eating well, shielding skin from the sun and using effective, yet affordable, treatment products are a few easy to-dos that should be part of anyone’s skincare routine. Follow six simple tips to get skin looking its best. More skincare tips and tricks are available online at www. clearasil.ca. • Feed your skin: To keep skin firm and smooth, eat foods rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids like salmon, nuts, olive oil and flax seeds. • Take your vitamins: Choose foods rich in vitamins to fortify skin. For example, vitamin A food sources, such as sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, oranges, carrots and spinach, help reduce the production of sebum, which can clog pores

and create pimples. • Drink up: Enjoy eight to 10 glasses of water each day to keep skin hydrated. • Activate at night: Skin cells regenerate more quickly overnight, so treatment products applied during the night absorb more efficiently into the skin, making the treatment more effective. For acne-prone skin, try Clearasil Ultra Overnight Lotion or Overnight Serum. • Sunscreen is your best friend: Regardless of the weather, use an SPF of 15 or higher every day to protect skin against the sun’s harmful rays. • Get out and get active: Regular exercise helps promote the overall health of skin, including reducing breakouts, increasing circulation and getting rid of harsh toxins.

Discovery Learning is an independent Christian school registered with Saskatchewan Learning and covers Grades 6 to 12. While it is a Christian based school there are no religious type involvements required by our staff. Oxbow is a vibrant, small, rural community in southeast Saskatchewan that offers excellent amenities. There exists a positive school environment, leading edge technology in virtual classroom teaching and (CIE) Cambridge International Exams. This also means that we have flexibility to give teachers courses of choice rather than having to teach a full range of subjects. Salary is competitive with provincial grid. Start up is August 31, 2011. We are aware that there is an element of the unknown with the concept of an independent school. We are welcoming tours and would be glad to have you spend a day at our school so you can become familiar with the environment without having to make a commitment to submitting an application. “Guns of the Civil War by Dennis Adler (Zenith Press, $40) Reviewed by Larry Cox This spring marks the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, which began April 12, 1861, when Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter near Charleston, S.C. According to a new book, the first skirmishes of the war caught the South at a disadvantage. Since the Southern states were primarily agricultural, most of the firearms manufactured in America during the years leading up to the conflict were made in the North. Simply put, the South had to play catch up. Dennis Adler is the perfect candidate to write a book that documents the colorful history and sprawling overview of the legendary guns and arms makers of the Civil War era. He is a nationally known expert in firearms and the author of 38 books, most on the subjects of Western guns and collectible firearms. Adler also is involved in the design and manufacture of custom cowboy guns for collectors and shooters, and serves on the Antique Firearms Committee of America. “Guns of the Civil War is divided into six main sections: A Nation on the Verge of Conflict and the Guns at Hand; Handguns of the Union -- Arming a Nation at War With Itself; Longarms of the U.S. Military; Confederate Arms; A Litany of Foreign Arms; and Modern Reproductions and Replicas. Its 352 pages are filled with more than 300 photos and illustrations in full color, the work of the author. This is more than just a book about guns, however. Adler includes the politics

of the country during this turbulent period that places the various guns in their historical context. The evolution of loose-powder cap-and-ball revolvers and the rifles developed and chosen for war is especially interesting. This is a must-have book not just for gun enthusiasts, but for history lovers as well.

Cattlemen applaud investment in genomics

OPINION by Norm Park for AgriNews

Hey producers, time to get really busy again All right all you producers. Line up and let’s play Pick Your Problem. OK, it’s not something to make light of, but let’s face it, there is always something looming on the horizon, or something right there slapping you in the face that is causing you some consternation and sleepless nights. If it’s not, and you’re not, then you’re not really a farmer or a rancher. So what is it? Prices? Well, they seem to have settled in nicely for awhile at least … most of them anyway. But heaven knows, they all would not all line up nicely all at once, would they? Genetically modified seeds and crops? Do you wanna grab that debate? How about the recent clash between the two beef marketing and promotion agencies, just when Canada was getting back into the international trade game again? Perhaps you’d like to climb aboard the decades old battle regarding singledesk versus dual marketing for the Canadian Wheat Board? You can always get into that fray, at any level, any time you want in the event you’re bored and haven’t encountered an individual problem in awhile. The old CWB debate always seems to be able to stir the discussion juices while splitting the farming

community into two camps. The two camps that don’t see eye-to-eye on a lot of things, but kinda get along anyway because they are supposed to and because they have to and because they know the other farmer on that other side isn’t that bad a guy anyway, so no sense in hating him just over some stupid business stuff that got switched into some stupid political stuff for some stupid reason that nobody seems to remember. Your problem might be the weather. Oh, c’mon, I know that one is a no-brainer. There are always weather problems for ranchers and farmers, just let Mother Nature pick her poison and then you go out and try to battle her or accommodate her depending on what’s on the horizon … literally … what’s on the horizon … that’s how you prepare for that problem. Dry, wet, flood, wind, insects, plant and animal diseases, mechanical … we have a whole bag of them. Dip your hand into the bag and pull one out … oh what the heck, dip in and take two just to make it interesting. Most producers don’t get through a growing or calving season without at least two significant issues to overcome … before lunch break. So now you’ve read this diatribe so far and it’s been nothing but negativity, hasn’t it? Yet you’re still going to go out there in a

LANE REALTY CORP.

week or two and try to put something into the ground and make something grow or look a steer in the eye and see a whole lot more than just a rib-eye steak or glance into a field and envision a loaf of bread. You’re going to go out there and get it done, damn it. And I say thank you.

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) has welcomed the March 16 announcement regarding the Canadian government’s investment in the establishment of a new Edmonton facility that will provide genomics technologies and services to Canada’s livestock producers. Genomics technologies allow producers to identify livestock with the most sought after traits, said CCA president Travis Toews. “Continued development and adoption of genomics technologies will be important to the long term competitiveness of the Canadian cattle industry,” he said. Through the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC), the CCA has invested producer dollars collected through Canada’s national check-off to support a number of research projects led by Livestock Gentec research partners at the universities of Alberta and Guelph. Beginning with the initial work to sequence the bovine genome, BCRC-funded research projects have identified a number of important gene markers that are associated with economically important traits such as feed efficiency and beef tenderness. The infrastructure funding that was announced will help move the results from industry’s previous research investments out of the laboratory and see them evolve into management tools that can be used by industry, said the CCA.

Initial payments adjusted upwards The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) announced in late March the 2010-11 initial payments for wheat, durum and feed barley were to increase effective April 1. The increase ranged from $23.30 to $49.80 per tonne for wheat (depending on grade and class), $16 to $30 per tonne for durum and $75 per tonne for Pool B feed barley. The total initial payment to date is basis in-store Vancouver or St. Lawrence and must be adjusted for freight/ elevation charges to arrive at farm gate prices. A complete listing of payments for all grades in dollars per tonne and dollars per bushel is posted on www.cwb.ca under Farmers and Farmer Payments. An example of the adjusted amount on No. 1 Canada Western Red Spring Wheat 12.5 showed an initial payment of $225.20 then an adjusted payment of $33.30 for a

total payment of $258.50 to date with a PRO (pool return outlook) of $317. Farmers who delivered wheat, durum and Pool B feed barley to the CWB between Aug. 1 2010 and March 31, 2011 will receive an adjustment payment with cheques being sent through Canada Post being delivered to the post office by April 15 or received by direct deposit on April 12. Upon delivery farmers may alternatively choose the CWB’s early payment option (EPO) as a payment method. As with the other CWB producer payment options, the EPO can be used as a cash-flow tool. It allows farmers to receive an additional payment equal to 80, 90 or 100 per cent of the PRO, less a discount within 10 business days. Producers remain eligible for additional payments if pooled returns exceed the early payment value.

The Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association (WCWG) said they were pleased with the action the federal government is taking to improve rail service in the hauling of grain and other commodities. The federal government announced in mid-March it will be adopting several recommendations of the Rail Freight Service Review panel and is implementing further measures to improve rail service. The further measures include the tabling of legislation requiring the railways to enter into service agreements with shippers, the establishment of supply chain performance metrics and a separate analysis of the grain supply chain. “These measures should lead to improved railway performance and accountability,” said Kevin Bender, president of the Wheat Growers. “We are especially pleased the government intends to move forward with improvements in legislation now rather than take the wait-and-see approach that the panel initially recommended.” Among the panel’s recommendations to be adopted are improved notice provisions of service changes; negotiated service agreements; a commercial dispute resolution mechanism and improved monitoring and reporting. In its submission to the panel’s interim report in November of 2010, the Wheat Growers supported these measures and also called on the panel to recommend a separate review of grain transportation issues. The WCWG will also be looking forward to the analysis of the grain supply chain. In their latest submission to the review panel, the Wheat Growers called for such a review to consider the revenue cap, the establishment of a two-tier revenue cap, the introduction of discontinuance provisions relating to producer car sidings, and a review of the Canadian Wheat Board’s role in the grain transportation system.

CYL chairman Brad Wildeman congratulated the 2011 mentorship recipients and thanked all finalists for participating in the selection process. “Attracting the calibre of youth to the Canadian beef industry will ensure we have strong, capable leaders into the future,” he said. “Their enthusiasm, willingness to adapt to new challenges and belief in the positive future of the beef industry is both refreshing and revitalizing.” Round-table facilitators included representatives from the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, CYL foundation partners as well as event sponsors. The 2011 CYL candidates will be paired with a mentor for an eight-month mentorship in the CYL Professional or Industry Leader mentorship category. The professional mentorship gives candidates the opportunity to pair up with agricultural professionals to get a jump-start on the beef-related career of their choice. The Industry Leader mentorship pairs finalists with the appropriate industry representative in a specific policy area of interest, such as animal health, international trade, international and

domestic marketing, environment, research or advocacy. The 2011 CYL candidates will also have the opportunity to apply for an international mentorship experience to the Five Nations Beef Alliance Young Ranchers Program that is to be held in Mexico this fall. The CYL program celebrated key milestones at the event. A banquet held on April 1 celebrated the successful completion of the Alberta CYL pilot project and honoured the graduates, Rosie Templeton, Samantha Sperber, Cody Schooten, Ricki Fleming and Nanita Blomquist. The formation of a CYL advisory council to the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association was also announced. Through this advisory council, CYL composed of CYL graduates and participants will have interactions with CCA directors and will help formulate CCA policy. Launched by the CCA in 2010, the CYL program provides industry-specific training and mentorship to assist the beef industry into the future. This program provides a combination of formal and informal opportunities to learn from existing beef cattle industry leaders.
