The Other Side of Trauma is the fourth book by Marie Calder, detailing the experiences of her father, during and after the Second World War. Hoping playoff stories veer from season’s It’s been a long hockey season shrouded in the controversy of concussions and headshots despite what Brian Burke told me three weeks ago when he was in Estevan, blaming the non-sports media for sensationalizing the situation. Sure there were some great stories this year in the NHL. Look at the first half of Sidney Crosby’s season. He had 32 goals and 66 points in the first 41 games of the season. The problem is, he didn’t have a second half to his season, missing the next 41 games. For those who aren’t great at math, myself included, so I used a calculator to make sure, that is 132 points in the 82-game regular season Crosby would have posted had he played and continued that pace. No player has topped 132 points since the 1995-96 season, in which Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr did it playing with the same Pittsburgh Penguins. They recorded 161 and 149 points, respectively. A big story coming out of Montreal at the start of the season was the spectacular play by goaltender Carey Price after the Canadiens dropped last year’s playoff wonder boy, Jaroslav Halak in the offseason, declaring Price the franchise starter. Then a Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty broke his neck and suffered a concussion. That incident received a lot more passionate conversation than the play of the goaltender. Tim Thomas, the old-timer between the Boston Bruins pipes, lost his starting job last season after winning the Vezina Trophy the year before. This year he rebounded, won the starting job again and then posted the highest save percentage ever recorded in a single season: .938. The previous record was held by Dominik Hasek with a .937.

Where did concussions plague the Bruins? Well forward Marc Savard didn’t play until December, after suffering a concussion toward the end of last season in March 2010. Savard, who has scored more than 700 career points, played 25 games after coming back, only to suffer another concussion at the end of January. He hasn’t played since, and retirement, at 33, is looking like his best option. The Vancouver Canucks led the league in points this year, winning the President’s Trophy. The Sedin twins worked their magic, just as Henrik led the league in points last year, brother Daniel won the Art Ross this year. Also, defenceman Dan Hamhuis, who finished top 10 in league plus/minus, was diagnosed with two concussions this season. After the first, he spoke to the media about the long-term effects concussions have on the brain, which we are now learning about thanks to research being done on deceased football players. He said he spoke to family members and that if he received another concussion, retiring is something the 28-year-old would have to seriously consider. After missing five games as a result of his first one, he started playing again, and one month later he had a second one. He missed another five games before coming back. Players get concussed every season, and that is never going to change. But a couple of years ago, players were told to rest and come back when they felt better, or to just take a Tylenol. Now we’re learning a concussion at 25 could mean some serious health problems at 50. That’s why concussions are the story of the NHL this year. I love hockey. I’m pretty hockey savvy, but unfortunately that’s what I remember most about the season. Now cheer up, playoffs are here, and I’m hoping for some great non-concussion storylines.

Judge rules medical marijuana program unconstitutional NATIONAL TORONTO - News reports say an Ontario Superior Court judge has ruled that the medical marijuana program is unconstitutional and has given Ottawa three months to fix the rules. Justice Donald Taliano found that sick people cannot get access to medical marijuana through appropriate means and must resort to illegal actions. He says that brands ill people who should be able to get the drugs as criminals. The St. Catharines justice declared the program to be invalid, as well as the laws prohibiting possession and production of cannabis. *** VANCOUVER - The City of Vancouver has gone on the defensive to battle suggestions the Olympic Village will saddle city taxpayers with a legacy of debt. The village was once touted by the mayor as the city’s prized jewel, but officials spent nearly two hours with reporters on Tuesday

going over detailed and never-before released figures to explain the project’s financial losses. It was a tightly-managed meeting that started with a news release inviting media to city hall “due to misinformation published” in local media. It also prohibited journalists from posting information online or to social media during the briefing. When the technical portion was over, city manager Penny Ballem asserted the project is not a boondoggle. INTERNATIONAL SENDAI, Japan Flights to the Japanese coastal city of Sendai are resuming, just over a month after a 32-foot (10-meter) tsunami swamped the runways of its airport. Adele Louise Gervais November 7, 1946 - March 26, 2011 Adele Gervais passed away in Estevan, Sask., on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the age of 64 years. Adele is survived by her loving family: husband Leo Gervais of Estevan; children, Jason (Shaunna) Gervais of Saskatoon, Sask., Warren Gervais of Estevan and Lea (Kent) Zimmerman of Estevan; grandchildren, Jordan, Sean, Dustin, Taylor, Riley and Jaxen Gervais, Tianna, Brittany, Jesse and Brody Gervais, Janelle, Preston and Devon Zimmerman; her mother, Amelia Carruthers of Prince Albert, Sask.; sisters, Gladys (Bruce) Goertzen of Prince Albert and Marg Carruthers of Saskatoon, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws. Cattlemen applaud investment in genomics

Hey producers, time to get really busy again All right all you producers. Line up and let’s play Pick Your Problem. OK, it’s not something to make light of, but let’s face it, there is always something looming on the horizon, or something right there slapping you in the face that is causing you some consternation and sleepless nights. If it’s not, and you’re not, then you’re not really a farmer or a rancher. So what is it? Prices? Well, they seem to have settled in nicely for awhile at least … most of them anyway. But heaven knows, they all would not all line up nicely all at once, would they? Genetically modified seeds and crops? Do you wanna grab that debate? How about the recent clash between the two beef marketing and promotion agencies, just when Canada was getting back into the international trade game again? Perhaps you’d like to climb aboard the decades old battle regarding singledesk versus dual marketing for the Canadian Wheat Board? You can always get into that fray, at any level, any time you want in the event you’re bored and haven’t encountered an individual problem in awhile. The old CWB debate always seems to be able to stir the discussion juices while splitting the farming

community into two camps. The two camps that don’t see eye-to-eye on a lot of things, but kinda get along anyway because they are supposed to and because they have to and because they know the other farmer on that other side isn’t that bad a guy anyway, so no sense in hating him just over some stupid business stuff that got switched into some stupid political stuff for some stupid reason that nobody seems to remember. Your problem might be the weather. Oh, c’mon, I know that one is a no-brainer. There are always weather problems for ranchers and farmers, just let Mother Nature pick her poison and then you go out and try to battle her or accommodate her depending on what’s on the horizon … literally … what’s on the horizon … that’s how you prepare for that problem. Dry, wet, flood, wind, insects, plant and animal diseases, mechanical … we have a whole bag of them. Dip your hand into the bag and pull one out … oh what the heck, dip in and take two just to make it interesting. Most producers don’t get through a growing or calving season without at least two significant issues to overcome … before lunch break. So now you’ve read this diatribe so far and it’s been nothing but negativity, hasn’t it? Yet you’re still going to go out there in a

week or two and try to put something into the ground and make something grow or look a steer in the eye and see a whole lot more than just a rib-eye steak or glance into a field and envision a loaf of bread. You’re going to go out there and get it done, damn it. And I say thank you.

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) has welcomed the March 16 announcement regarding the Canadian government’s investment in the establishment of a new Edmonton facility that will provide genomics technologies and services to Canada’s livestock producers. Genomics technologies allow producers to identify livestock with the most sought after traits, said CCA president Travis Toews. “Continued development and adoption of genomics technologies will be important to the long term competitiveness of the Canadian cattle industry,” he said. Through the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC), the CCA has invested producer dollars collected through Canada’s national check-off to support a number of research projects led by Livestock Gentec research partners at the universities of Alberta and Guelph. Beginning with the initial work to sequence the bovine genome, BCRC-funded research projects have identified a number of important gene markers that are associated with economically important traits such as feed efficiency and beef tenderness. The infrastructure funding that was announced will help move the results from industry’s previous research investments out of the laboratory and see them evolve into management tools that can be used by industry, said the CCA.

Initial payments adjusted upwards The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) announced in late March the 2010-11 initial payments for wheat, durum and feed barley were to increase effective April 1. The increase ranged from $23.30 to $49.80 per tonne for wheat (depending on grade and class), $16 to $30 per tonne for durum and $75 per tonne for Pool B feed barley. The total initial payment to date is basis in-store Vancouver or St. Lawrence and must be adjusted for freight/ elevation charges to arrive at farm gate prices. A complete listing of payments for all grades in dollars per tonne and dollars per bushel is posted on www.cwb.ca under Farmers and Farmer Payments. An example of the adjusted amount on No. 1 Canada Western Red Spring Wheat 12.5 showed an initial payment of $225.20 then an adjusted payment of $33.30 for a

total payment of $258.50 to date with a PRO (pool return outlook) of $317. Farmers who delivered wheat, durum and Pool B feed barley to the CWB between Aug. 1 2010 and March 31, 2011 will receive an adjustment payment with cheques being sent through Canada Post being delivered to the post office by April 15 or received by direct deposit on April 12. Upon delivery farmers may alternatively choose the CWB’s early payment option (EPO) as a payment method. As with the other CWB producer payment options, the EPO can be used as a cash-flow tool. It allows farmers to receive an additional payment equal to 80, 90 or 100 per cent of the PRO, less a discount within 10 business days. Producers remain eligible for additional payments if pooled returns exceed the early payment value.

The Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association (WCWG) said they were pleased with the action the federal government is taking to improve rail service in the hauling of grain and other commodities. The federal government announced in mid-March it will be adopting several recommendations of the Rail Freight Service Review panel and is implementing further measures to improve rail service. The further measures include the tabling of legislation requiring the railways to enter into service agreements with shippers, the establishment of supply chain performance metrics and a separate analysis of the grain supply chain. “These measures should lead to improved railway performance and accountability,” said Kevin Bender, president of the Wheat Growers. “We are especially pleased the government intends to move forward with improvements in legislation now rather than take the wait-and-see approach that the panel initially recommended.” Among the panel’s recommendations to be adopted are improved notice provisions of service changes; negotiated service agreements; a commercial dispute resolution mechanism and improved monitoring and reporting. In its submission to the panel’s interim report in November of 2010, the Wheat Growers supported these measures and also called on the panel to recommend a separate review of grain transportation issues. The WCWG will also be looking forward to the analysis of the grain supply chain. In their latest submission to the review panel, the Wheat Growers called for such a review to consider the revenue cap, the establishment of a two-tier revenue cap, the introduction of discontinuance provisions relating to producer car sidings, and a review of the Canadian Wheat Board’s role in the grain transportation system.

Five young Sask. producers accepted into mentorship program The Cattlemen’s Young Leaders (CYL) Development Program announced its national mentorship recipients on April 5. The 16 recipients were named following a challenging selection process that saw 24 finalists participate in a round-table setting with key industry facilitators. The event was held April 2 during the Northlands Farm and Ranch Show in Edmonton. The successful recipients from Saskatchewan included: Allison Porter, Tara Mulhern Davidson, Sarah Anderson, Sheldon Kyle and Ryan Beierbach. There were two successful applicants from British Columbia, seven from Alberta and one each from Manitoba and Ontario. CYL chairman Brad Wildeman congratulated the 2011 mentorship recipients and thanked all finalists for participating in the selection process. “Attracting the calibre of youth to the Canadian beef industry will ensure we have strong, capable leaders into the future,” he said. “Their enthusiasm, willingness to adapt to new challenges and belief in the positive future of the beef industry is both refreshing and revitalizing.” Round-table facilitators included representatives from the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, CYL foundation partners as well as event sponsors. The 2011 CYL candidates will be paired with a mentor for an eight-month mentorship in the CYL Professional or Industry Leader mentorship category. The professional mentorship gives candidates the opportunity to pair up with agricultural professionals to get a jump-start on the beef-related career of their choice. The Industry Leader mentorship pairs finalists with the appropriate industry representative in a specific policy area of interest, such as animal health, international trade, international and

domestic marketing, environment, research or advocacy. The 2011 CYL candidates will also have the opportunity to apply for an international mentorship experience to the Five Nations Beef Alliance Young Ranchers Program that is to be held in Mexico this fall. The CYL program celebrated key milestones at the event. A banquet held on April 1 celebrated the successful completion of the Alberta CYL pilot project and honoured the graduates, Rosie Templeton, Samantha Sperber, Cody Schooten, Ricki Fleming and Nanita Blomquist. The formation of a CYL advisory council to the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association was also announced. Through this advisory council, CYL composed of CYL graduates and participants will have interactions with CCA directors and will help formulate CCA policy. Launched by the CCA in 2010, the CYL program provides industry-specific training and mentorship to assist the beef industry into the future. This program provides a combination of formal and informal opportunities to learn from existing beef cattle industry leaders.
