Hello, my name is Angel. I am a Black Lab Cross. I am a spayed female about 2 years old. I can dance the 2 step when I am happy to see you. I am a large dog, but I would make the perfect addition to any family. I love walks. I like my canine friends here and I don’t get to excited about the feline species either. I am generally just a happy-go-lucky type dog. My name is Junior. I am a black and white, neutered male, Staffordshire Lab Cross. I know some commands but I am more than willing to learn more. I really like a lot of exercise so I would have to be walked every day. I get along with most of my canine friends here at the shelter, so I would do well on a farm with another canine to teach me the do’s and don’ts of life on a farm.

Kids and rocks make up winning composition It was a photo from the summer of 2009 that won Lisa Ferrier the Southeast Trader Express’s 2010 front page photo contest. It was at a baseball game and her children were growing bored, so she sent them off to play. “They decided rocks were a good thing to do,” Ferrier said, a resident of North Portal. Her son removed his boots, used one to scoop up a bunch of pebbles, then unceremoniously dumped the boot-full of stones on top of his sister’s head. The innocent rock tossing turned out to be a winning shot for the mother of two, receiving a brand new Olympus E420 digital SLR camera. Of the feeling Ferrier had when she found out she won, she said, “It was awesome.” Her photo garnered the most votes of any photo eligible for the contest. The Trader Express reserves its front page for the top photo submitted each week. Each weekly winner was part of a three-week contest, which began Jan. 7. Voting was opened to the public so people could vote for their favourite shot of the year. “It was kind of fun,” Ferrier said of watching the votes come in and getting

of them of her kids. She boasts about 10,000 photos on her Facebook account. She keeps her camera in her purse at all times and takes it everywhere she goes. She

said the prize is going to be an upgrade to the camera she used to capture her children playing with rocks and she’s looking forward to begin putting the new camera to good use. The 2011 front page photo contest has already started in the Trader Express. If you have a great shot to submit, send your photo, with a brief explanation, to editor@estevanmercury.ca. Perspective Expressed Opinions Jordan Baker Estevan Mercury Reporter

We’ve forgotten how to winter drive This winter was been the bane of many drivers around here. I include myself, but I take much comfort in knowing I’m not alone. No year have I seen so many people lose control of their vehicles and end up stuck in the ditch. I have a hit spot of ice and found myself beside and below the road, and on a second occasion, during a particularly windy day followed a set of tracks through the white haze of snow taking a corner much too sharp, again needing to be pulled out. I had never lost control of my vehicle before, so this was a new inconvenience for me. It’s not just me. People I know, and many I don’t, have found themselves in the same situation. It’s frustrating. It’s a real hassle. It’s a waste of time. That’s only if you hit the ditch, but you could hit something else. My vehicle was removed from the ditch without a scratch or a dent. There’s enough snow that it’s hard to stray too far off the beaten path when you do leave the road. But who knows what’s waiting just beneath the snowy surface to rip a strip across your car? Trees, telephone poles and other car-destroying things are a little more of a danger when you don’t have to get through a couple of feet of snow. Losing control of your vehicle and skidding, or sliding uncontrollably on the ice, can be an unpleasant and helpless

Page 4

feeling. The best way to avoid that is to drive the conditions, but even then, hitting a patch of soft snow can suck a car out of the lane and off the road. Upon finding someone who has gone in the ditch, there must be some sort of courtesy to follow. To say most people have cell phones, is a pretty conservative estimate. So in most cases when you come across a car with the hood buried in the snow and the back wheels off the ground, the driver has probably already made the call that will lead to their liberation from the snowy imprisonment. But it’s never a bad idea to pull over and make sure. The last thing I would want after driving my car off the road is to be stuck with no means of communication and cars whizzing by, admiring my predicament but offering no assistance. I recall finding someone who had the misfortune of being stuck beside the road on Highway 47. I pulled over, offering any help I could provide. Not much of an offer considering I own a front-wheel drive, four cylinder. I could have made a call for the lone man but really hoped I wouldn’t be asked for anything more. He already called a friend to help. “Awesome,” I thought, glad I needn’t get out of my warm car and brave the elements by helping shovel or push. I continued on my way, relieved but glowing at my own thoughtfulness and chivalry.

Community showing support for family displaced by fire The Weldon School Community Council (SCC) is organizing a banquet to raise funds for the Johnson family, who lost their house in a fire. The Feb. 17 spaghetti meal is the start of trying to raise funds in the community to help the displaced family. There is also a trust fund that was set up, as the Lorna Johnson family trust fund, through the Spectra Credit Union in Bienfait. Donations can be made to that trust, through any Spectra branch, but those who would like to make a donation through another branch are asked to call the

“Seer of Sevenwaters” by Juliet Marillier Roc Hardcover, $24.95 Reviewed by Ealish Waddell Few writers can drop a reader into a time and place as well as Juliet Marillier, whose “Sevenwaters” series flawlessly melds medieval Irish history and myths into an engrossing saga of a family marked by courage, passion and magic. “Seer of Sevenwaters,” the fifth installment, follows Sibeal, a solemn girl whose gifts of clairvoyance and wisdom have indicated from childhood that she was destined to enter the ranks of the Druids. Now, as a young woman, she is taking her final steps of preparation to officially embark on the long and solitary path of her spiritual calling. But first, she is dispatched to spend one last summer with her married sisters on the far northern island of Inis Eala. Along on its rocky shore she witnesses a terrible shipwreck, and manages to singlehandedly

school at 306-388-2422 to get the trust fund number. The SCC and school staff will be cooking the meal and running the event, hoping for as many people as possible to show their support for the family that lost its home on Jan. 23. “We’re really hoping this has a good response, and a good turnout and community support,” said Marnie Wilson, president of the SCC. The fire left the Johnson family with nothing, thoroughly destroying the house and all the contents inside. “They still need everything,” said Wilson. save the life of one survivor, a man she give the name Ardal since he he cannot remember his own. As Ardal’s body recovers but his memories stay locked away, it quickly becomes clear that there is a terrible secret behind the sketchy accounts of the doomed ship’s last voyage. A menacing Norseman and his wild, mute bride seem to be at the heart of it, but none of Sibeal’s divinatory talents give her any answers that make sense. For steady, serious Sibeal never would have predicted that she would soon be taking to that dangerous sea herself in a quest to right a deep wrong and solve a tragic mystery -- and face a decision she never saw coming: the choice between her life’s work and her true love. Though set hundreds of years in the past and suffused with folklore and magic, “Seer of Sevenwaters” feels utterly relatable and engaging to modern readers. Sibeal’s struggles are timeless, the questions of a teen trying to figure out who she is and what she really wants. Whether read alone or as part of the series, “Seer of Sevenwaters” is a recommended pick for fantasy lovers. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Anything that is used in a house would be helpful, from silverware and coffee pots to blankets. A room has been reserved at the school for those who wish to donate household goods. Any goods can be dropped off at Weldon School in Bienfait.

They have family in the area but are still far from moving back into their own house. The SCC discussed the idea of the supper after the school’s principal mentioned the idea of hosting a dinner as a benefit.

Wilson noted there has been lots of positive response from people in the school community, which bodes well for a receptive turnout. “We want to do what we can,” Wilson said. The organizers have

approached some local grocery stores to donate bread and hamburger to the evening. The spaghetti supper is being held on Feb. 17 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Weldon School in Bienfait. The cost is $5 per plate.

Upright Piano Q: I have a Shubert upright grand piano that was made in New York during the early 1900s. I’d like to know if it is valuable. -Maria, Albuquerque, N.M. Estevan native brings magic home Promoting the release elease of his introductory novel, an Estevan native iss coming home. Derek Donais spent the bulk of his formative years in Estevan, from the agee of five to 19. Writingg was already a part of his life. “I’d experimented ted with writing here and there in junior and senior nior high school,” he toldd the Trader, from his home me in Strathmore, Alberta. However, it wasn’t until after he’d finished his master’s aster’s degree at the University sity of zed, “I Regina that he realized, ze and could actually organize er than write something longer a single essay. “Like a lot of other oomer things, I was a late bloomer with my writing.” lMagHis novel, MetalMagic: Talisman, is nott only his first published work, rt of a but also the first part planned trilogy. The former Regina police officer, and current high school teacher said finding time to write is one of his challenges. As a husband and father of two, he can’t be a writer all the time, but added, he’s becoming better

Derek Donais “If I didn’t have the entire storyline established, at least roughly, before writing the first book, I’m not sure how things would work out. I might have written something that wouldn’t

translate into the broader picture.” All that organizing inside the mind led to a smooth writing process when it finally did come down to getting his ideas onto the page. That time spent before writing has meant a speedier process for the second novel as well. No longer having to create a new world, and furthering character stories rather than inventing them anew, book two is moving along at a quicker pace. He estimated his progress at around 30,000 words right now. As for the release of the second novel, tentatively titled MetalMagic: Revelation, he said he’s more

interested in producing a novel fans of the first one will enjoy, rather than giving them a quick follow-up that falls flat. “I think the reader deserves your best effort, even if it takes longer. That last bit might get me in hot water with a few people, who are anxiously awaiting the second book. They’ve already scolded me for leaving them hanging at the end of Talisman.” He described his first novel as an adventure set in a fantasy world. Donais noted even fantasy stories aren’t all taken from the imagination, but still heavily based on real experiences and simple, relatable stories. ⇢

INCH TOWARD at making the time to write more frequently. “Along any life path you need to find balance. For a while, I didn’t have that, but I’m working on it.” Donais had the ideas for MetalMagic running through his head for a long

YOUR IDEAL BODY

time before putting pen to paper. He estimated it took him about a year to write the book, spread out over the course of about five years. He developed the “over-arching” storylines between all three episodes before writing Talisman.

Estevan native brings magic home ⇠“Any successful story, I think, needs to have elements that most people can relate to. Otherwise, there wouldn’t be an investment on the part of the reader. You wouldn’t really be able, or want to comprehend the characters, their motivations or any other integral part of the story. Yes, the events of MetalMagic take place in a fantasy world, Evarlund. But the story is about the relationship between a brother and sister. Donais said he took elements of his own sibling experiences and “extrapolated and amplified them to fit the book. It’s about those characters’ self-discovery, and a son trying to live up to expectations. All in a world of magic. “It has elements of sibling rivalry and of discovering one’s potential

in a world where things don’t always seem to make sense. “I think the trick to a good science-fiction or fantasy novel is to have just enough science or fantasy elements to make it unique, but not so much other-worldliness that a person can’t identify with what’s going on, Donais said. He said when building ideas for the story he didn’t have brainstorming sessions, but instead just made sure his “antenna was up, so he was open to the ideas that he was presented with. In realizing this story he said, “With all of the fantasy stories that have magical elements, there really weren’t any that put the slant more toward the technology of the magic than the individual.

Donais noted how magic was dealt with in the famous works by J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling and Robert Jordan. “(The wizards in those stories) all use magic. But then I thought, ‘What if they couldn’t do magic because they didn’t have

the right stuff?’ That led to the idea of needing a special metal to wield magic, and the story idea grew from there. MetalMagic is a young adult novel but he said he’s received great feedback from both teens and adults. Anyone who reads

the genre is young enough at heart to be engrossed in the world of Evarlund, he added. In a world of fantasy, readers are limited only by their imaginations. The novel was published last September by Wheatmark, a small printon-demand publisher.

Donais will be appearing at the Estevan Public Library for an hour on Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m. After the author’s reading, the novel will be available for purchase and afterward eight to 15-year-olds who have preregistered can participate in a Valentine craft.

Toronto, London stock exchanges to merge INTERNATIONAL MOSCOW - Russia sees the planned U.S. missile defence system as a potential threat to its nuclear forces and may review its participation in a landmark nuclear arms treaty, officials said Monday. The New START deal, the centerpiece of Barack Obama’s efforts to reset ties with Russia and the most significant arms control pact in nearly two decades, took effect last week. It limits each country to 1,550 strategic warheads, down from the current ceiling of 2,200. The treaty doesn’t prevent the U.S. from building new missile defence systems, but Russia has warned that it reserves the right to withdraw from the treaty if the United States significantly boosts its missile shield. Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov reaffirmed Monday that a buildup in the U.S. missile defence capability would prompt Moscow re-consider its obligations under the New START treaty.

NATIONAL TORONTO - TMX Group (TSX:X), which operates the Toronto Stock Exchange, and the London Stock Exchange announced Wednesday they are merging to create one of the world’s largest stock exchanges. The merger, which is subject to regulatory approvals, is unanimously being recommended by the boards of both exchanges. The merger, if approved, would give the new firm a value of just over C$6 billion and give LSE shareholders just over 50 per cent of the combined company. TMX Group is valued at C$2.99 billion, while the London Stock Exchange Group’s value is slightly higher, around C$3.25 billion. The new company will have the world’s largest number of listing, more than 6,700 companies with an aggregate value of $5.8 trillion, the partners said in a statement early Wednesday. PROVINCIAL

REGINA - The Saskatchewan government says it will not tell municipalities what they should or shouldn’t do to attract doctors — even if bidding battles pit communities against each other. Health Minister Don McMorris says he knows some communities get frustrated when they try to recruit doctors and lose out to other regions that offer better incentives. Some places provide free housing, cars and financial bonuses, but not every community can do that. McMorris says the province doesn’t get involved when communities bid for industry or business. The minister does say that he hopes a tentative contract with the Saskatchewan Medical Association will address some of the discrepancies that rural communities feel. The contract includes $33 million in special programs to reward physicians for things such as rural practices.

Roughrider receiver signs with Bears PROVINCIAL REGINA - The CFL’s outstanding Canadian is ready to give the NFL a shot. Saskatchewan Roughriders slotback Andy Fantuz has signed a contract with the Chicago Bears. “It’s really exciting for me,” Fantuz said Friday at the NFL team’s practice facility. “It’s a whole new avenue for my career. I’m excited to make that step and get the opportunity to try out for the Bears. “I’m particularly excited about this organization because of all the people I’ve met and all the history behind it and the fan base. It’s something I’m really looking forward to.” Fantuz, 27, also examined his NFL options last year before signing a new deal with the Roughriders. However, since he’s entering his option year this season, he had until Feb. 16

to sign with an NFL club. NATIONAL CALGARY - Canada will send a young team to the upcoming world ski championships because of injuries to a number of veteran racers. The team of eight men and seven women includes three World Cup winners, two world championship medallists and 13 Olympians. Crystal Globe winner Erik Guay of MontTremblant, Que., will be joined by veterans Britt and Michael Janyk of Whistler, B.C., and Jan Hudec of Calgary. Ben Thomsen of Invermere, B.C., and MariePier Prefontaine of SaintSauveur, Que., are among the Canadians making their debut at the event. *** VANCOUVER - Almost a year before the death of a Georgian luger on the opening day of the

2010 Olympics, internal emails reveal there were concerns about the possibility of a serious accident at the Whistler, B.C. sliding centre. The March 2009 emails between Vancouver Olympic Committee CEO John Furlong and other senior members of the VANOC team discussed possible problems on the track. They were released M o n d a y b y Va n c o u ver Olympic Committee spokeswoman Renee Smith Valade and are in response to a letter from the International Luge Federation letter to the track’s German designer. INTERNATIONAL BRUSSELS - ConsumWINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest baseball coach Tom Walter has donated a kidney to a freshman player who suffers from a disease that can lead to kidney failure.

School officials said Tuesday that both Walter and outfielder Kevin Jordan were recovering in an Atlanta hospital one day after the transplant was performed. Jordan was diagnosed

last April with ANCA vasculitis, a type of autoimmune swelling disorder caused by abnormal antibodies. When those abnormalities show up in the kidneys, they cause blood and protein to leak

into the urine and result in kidney failure. Walter was tested in December to see if he would be a match, and learned Jan. 28 during the team’s first practice that he was.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Time is on your side in the early part of the week. But anything left undone by midweek will need to be put into rush mode. The weekend offers choices for you and someone special. TAURUS (April 30 to May 20) Finally getting credit for a contribution is nice for all you ideagenerating Ferdinands and Fernandas. But don’t sit on your laurels under the cork tree. Use it as a first step to a bigger opportunity. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Despite the progress made, a hint of doubt might set in. That’s OK. ESTEVAN THE ENERGY CITY

SNOWMOBILE ROUTES The snowmobile routes are indicated by the bold dashed line. CITY OF ESTEVAN SNOWMOBILE BYLAW – ROUTE MAP The snowmobile route, as indicated by the dark dashed lines on the route map, may be lawfully travelled on by snowmobile operators between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. The designated route is to be used solely for the purpose of entering and exiting the corporate limits of the City of Estevan. Speeds on the route are not to exceed forty kilometers per hour and snowmobile operators are required to follow the rules of the road pursuant to Section 219 of the TrafÀc Safety Act. Any person who contravenes any provisions of this bylaw is guilty of an offense and liable on summary conviction – For the Àrst offence, a Àne of not less than $200.00 and not more than $1,000.00 and for second and any subsequent offence, a Àne of not less than $400.00 and not more than $2,000.00. View the actual bylaw online at www.estevan.ca CITY OF ESTEVAN SNOW REMOVAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the goal of the snow removal policy? The goal of the snow removal policy is to provide a timely, adequate and cost effective level of service so that streets are passable and vehicles can move in the City. Once the initial clean-up is completed standard procedure of Public Works is to continue to widen and grade streets. A copy of the full policy is available at www.estevan.ca When does the City start to clean up after a snow storm? Public Works monitors the streets and the major response to a snow storm does not generally start until it has stopped snowing. It is dangerous due to reduced visibility and ineffective to clear Priority 1 areas more than once if the streets are passable. Streets are monitored and intersections will be sanded or trouble areas cleared if necessary. Who do we call to report icy streets, blocked intersection or other snow related issues? Please call 634-1800 during regular hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. After hours, please call the afterhours emergency number at 634- 3770. The after hour calls are directed to an answering service who will forward calls to the appropriate persons. As well, Estevan Police Services monitor the streets after hours and will request that the intersections be sanded or trouble areas be cleared. How does the City determine what streets get cleaned first? The City classifies the streets into 3 priorities: Priority 1 – Arterial Streets Streets with high volumes of traffic and main routes through and around the City such as 4th Street – average daily traffic volume of more than 8,000. Priority 2 – Collector Roads Streets with somewhat lesser volumes of traffic and designed to route traffic from local streets to the Arterial Streets such as Nicholson Road – average daily traffic of between 1,000 and 8,000. Priority 3 – Local Streets Streets that generally only serve the people that live in that area with low volumes of traffic and mostly residential – less than 1,000 average daily traffic volume. Within Priority Three there are some streets that are extremely narrow and have to be windrowed and transported

away in the same day such as Grundeen Crescent. Will the City complete some areas more than once in a major snowfall before all streets are completed? Yes, if the Priority 1 and 2 become impassable those streets would be cleared of snow again to ensure that traffic can move. Can home owners blow snow from their sidewalks, driveways and parking lots into streets? No, property owners cannot as it makes it more difficult for the city to complete a proper cleanup; it causes the streets to be rougher than necessary, causes a hazard to motorists and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. The only place this is permitted is the downtown business district as they have nowhere else to shovel the snow to. Should we keep our sidewalks clear of snow? Yes, the Traffic Bylaw requires it as it makes it safer for pedestrians and those people that have to walk on the streets for work purposes such as letter carriers and meter readers. Also please make sure that extension cords crossing sidewalks to vehicles do not create trip hazards. Can we pile snow from the sidewalks on the streets? No, the only place this is allowed is the downtown business district as these buildings do not have any other area to move the snow to. Can home and business owners pile snow on their own private properties adjacent to alleys and streets? Yes, however make sure that the piles are not so high as to create a blind corner limiting visibility for pedestrians and motorist Can home and business owners pile snow on existing windrows? No, this creates visibility and driving hazards, makes it more difficult and time consuming to remove the windrows and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. Can snow be piled in city alleys and streets? No this eliminates access for garbage collection, fire protection and other emergency services and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. However it is permitted in cul-de-sacs as long as the snow is piled in the centre of the cul-de-sac only as other piles of snow impact neighbors and makes snow removal more difficult. Can I park my spare vehicle or Motor Home on the Street? Yes, however vehicles are not permitted to be parked on any streets in excess of 24 hours and cause a lot of prob-

lems for snow removal and traffic. Can I park on the streets for less than 24 hours? Yes, however in the event of a major snowstorm we ask that all vehicles be parked in driveways or other areas where possible. In the event of a Major snowstorm the City plans to have all areas windrowed where required as soon as possible, providing equipment is operational. Please do not park your vehicles on the streets if possible as the vehicles access for snow removal equipment and have greater potential of being damaged by other vehicles and equipment. When are City snow dump areas used? The City Snow dump sites are operational from 6am – 10pm, city equipment does not operate at these locations outside of these hours.

The City also asks that: • Children are kept away from snow dump sites and piles. These are dangerous areas when equipment is working, as well as voids in the piles may collapse trapping children. • Please keep clear of snow clearing equipment and crews. If possible choose an alternate route to avoid delays. • Please keep back 20m of Sanding equipment, as they will be discharging sand at intersections of streets, lanes, and high traffic zones. • Please keep all emergency exits buildings clear of snow and ice. Your cooperation and patience is greatly appreciated. BYLAW ENFORCEMENT WILL BE ISSUING TICKETS FOR INFRACTIONS.

Displays by Local Artists Hours: Tuesday - Friday (8:30 - 6:00p) Saturday (1:00 - 4:00p) The Estevan Art Gallery is grateful for the support of the City of Estevan, Saskatchewan Arts Board, Sask Culture, Sask Lotteries, Museum Association of Saskatchewan, and Canadian Heritage.

Jean is the author of “Expressive Portraits: Creative Methods for Painting People.” She has been painting for over twenty years, balancing her strong teaching abilities and writing with her continuing aspiration to convey her experiences and ideas in visual form. Pedersons’s traditional practice includes referential imagery of people, still life, landscape and abstraction. The layering of a variety of media offers the artist an assortment of possibilities within her work; quality of edge, line and texture all play a vital role within her imagery. Although Pederson is well known for her mastery of watercolours, mixed media has become an important venue for her creative expression. Farm Fragments concentrates on the theme of the Family Farm, its historical inception and its evolution of experience and abandonment throughout the century. Pederson has collected various “fragments” of her family’s farm including old receipts, artefacts of the homestead (sections of linoleum, doors, moulding, shingles), and photographs as a means to tell the story of the ever-changing landscape and unique social fabric of the prairies with concentration on the role of women. In conjunction with her abstracted paintings, collage, Polaroid transfers of historic and contemporary photographs, and installations the exhibition comes together to provide a splintered or reÁected view of those pioneers who built the social and economic foundations for the Canadian Prairies. “This exhibition is as eclectic as the people who made up the rural society” - Jean Pederson

Linda Gudmundson January 18th, 2011 - February 26th, 2011 Pink! (Exhibition), 2011 | Mixed Media Linda Gudmundson is an Estevan-based artist whose work is inspired by and evokes expressions of femininity. Vintage women’s magazines, compacts, jewellery, and clothing provide inspiration for her latest exhibition, Pink! in which layers of collage, stamping and text is applied to sealed boxes that entice the viewer to touch and interact. Gudmundson’s exploration of femininity suggests various dichotomies between the masculinity, modernism and the white box, placed value systems among consumed objects and their packaging, and the physical or metaphysical connection between the artist, the artwork, and the collector. Having studied at the University of Regina and the Minneapolis School of Art, Gudmundson has exhibited and taught in various communities in Southern Saskatchewan for over a decade. An avid painter, she has completed many major commissions and large scale murals for private and public organizations including the most recent acquisition by Siever, Vermeersch & Fonstad Accounting Firm in Estevan. THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2011

The society’s website is www.rosacea.org, and its phone number is 888-NOBLUSH. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer

Rosacea Reddens Nose and Cheeks DEAR DR. DONOHUE: The tip of my husband’s nose and his cheeks have become noticeably red this past year. People ask me -- half kidding, half serious -- if he’s been drinking heavily. He doesn’t touch alcohol. This doesn’t bother him, but it bothers me. What is this? -- N.D. ANSWER: The probable culprit is rosacea (rose-A-she-uh). It starts as a reddening of the nose and cheeks, and sometimes can affect the forehead. The skin also develops webs of tiny blood vessels. Pimples -- which look much like acne -- break out. The final stage, which should never be reached these days, is the bulbous nose of W.C. Fields. Rosacea is common. Fair-skinned people with light hair are the most susceptible. So are those who blush easily. The actual cause is a bit unclear. Some believe the skin mite Demodex is involved. It lives in hair follicles. But people without rosacea also have the mite, so a cause and effect is not certain. People with rosacea often have eye involvement, something that’s often overlooked but needs consideration. The eyes feel gritty and might burn. They, too, can become red. Rosacea isn’t a curable condition, but it is highly treatable. Your husband ought to steer clear of spicy foods, sunlight and extremes of heat and cold. That he doesn’t drink alcohol is in his favor. Metronidazole cream, gel or lotion, or Azelex (azelaic acid) cream can bring gratifying results. Over-thecounter benzoyl peroxide often works for an acne breakout. Sometimes oral metronidazole or an oral antibiotic is added to the program. You or your husband would do well to contact the National Rosacea Society, which can provide you with informative literature and keep you abreast of the latest changes in treatment.
