Auction for car and music lovers
Orpheum Theatre
Prized pieces will go to the highest bidder, as a collection that would make the most avid collectors swoon is headed for auction. Dean Chow, a local dentist, is a self-described “hoarder.” He doesn’t ever throw anything out, a habit he’s developed since childhood. “I grew up in Radville, and we had a (family) restaurant there, so I started doing that back in the ‘50s and ‘60s, collecting coins and bottle caps, cards with hockey players heads on them, Rolling Stone magazine and comic books, stuff like that,” he said. But the items from his early days of collecting will not be available at the auction. “And then I lost a lot of it because when I went away to college, my mother threw most of it away. She figured it wasn’t worth anything. Ever since then, I’ve been kind of a hoarder, but a hoarder in the sense of collectible items. So that really got me on the course of collecting.” Among the items that will be available for auction are cars, like a 2003 50th anniversary Corvette convertible, acoustic and electric guitars, including a Gibson Les Paul, autographed sports jerseys and other sports memorabilia, Ducks Unlimited knives, among many other items. Some of the Coca-

My name is Jema, I am an adult female Pomeranian, I have black and white hair, I am very pretty. I was found at the No Frills parking lot on July 20, does anyone know me?
Aren’t I so cute? I am a Persian, beige and brown, adult female. I was just dropped off outside the door at EHS.
Heading to auction Aug. 27 is Dean Chow’s collection of cars, guitars, knives, sports memorabilia and various other items. Among the guitars shown are a 60th anniversary Fender Stratocaster and a 1972 Les Paul gold top played by Dave Hidalgo of Los Lobos. Cola items date back to the opening of his family’s restaurant around 1911. Chow said in all, there are hundreds of items up for auction. What he considers most when buying a new collectible, he said, is the rarity of a particular item. “(I look for) something that is as unique as possible, where I would be the only one that would have it. If it strikes my fancy when I look at it, and I see something that I might be able to add to the collection, then I buy it. It would be kind of an addiction, but I’m trying to get over that right now. I’m trying not to buy anything.” He said once he started collecting a series of some kind he wanted to be able complete it. “I’m definitely getting over that. I think August 27 will probably be ... a certain relief that I’m over that stage of my life. I don’t know if it’ll be tearful, but it will be a little bit sad to see everything go, after a lifetime of collecting.” Chow said he has a background as a musician, which explains the guitar collection, but noted he
was more of a drummer. That means the guitars have been rarely used, if ever. “The guitar players got all the glory, so I started to have this fondness for guitars, but I’m a brutal guitar player. I just like collecting them.” The guitars he’s picked up all over the continent. Some of them were bought close by at Fuzztone Music in Yorkton. A lot of the really high-end, collectible pieces he bought at Willie’s American Guitars in St. Paul, Minn. “He’s probably the largest vintage guitar dealer, in maybe the world. It’s beautiful stuff there.” Most of these items he’s picked up on travels, because he likes to be able to see the piece before buying. He’s acquired a lot of the knives through wildlife and Ducks Unlimited auctions. For the sports memorabilia, he said he got collecting enough that he developed a few contacts who specialize in that area. Chow is just at the point where he’s ready to turn over his collection to others who cherish the significance of these items. “I’ve been here for
32 years now, as a dentist, and it’s just time to start downsizing and releasing some of that. My kids are grown up and they don’t really seem to have the interest in holding a lot of (the collection) over.” He said he’s running out of space for things, though he has a 1,600 square foot shop where he keeps most of his cars. He said his wife will be glad to be rid of everything as well. Not everything is up for auction. He has decided to keep some items that have a particular sentimental value. A radio that his grandmother had, his electric train from when he was a child and a few others he will be holding onto. He guessed that between 70 and 80 per cent of his collectibles will be available. The auction is Aug. 27 online and at the curling club. The cars will be auctioned through the Mack Auction Company website at www.mackauctioncompany.com. Those interested in seeing the items ahead of time can go to the website to view most of the items that will be available next Saturday.

Just watch the trailer Warning: This column is chock full of spoilers. If you don’t want to know anything about The Professional, Harry Potter, Dr. Strangelove or Black Swan, don’t read this. It’s column writing time yet again. Somehow this always sneaks up on me. Usually, I’m ready Wednesday morning to pour my inner-most thoughts onto the page. Today, however, is a different story. I’m stumped. Nothing pressing to report. So I’m going to copy an idea I found on Cracked. com. Contributer Daniel O’Brien watched all of the Harry Potter movie trailers, then wrote a summary of what he gathered from each clip. I’m going to do that, except with films recommended by Jordan Baker. He insists they’re not obscure, but I’ve never heard of any of them. So here we go: Two movies explained by someone who hasn’t seen them. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying
• To test the seals on your refrigerator and freezer, close a piece of paper in the door. If you can pull it out easily, it’s likely that your seal is loose. Clean or replace door gaskets for a better seal. • To keep vinyl car seats bearable in summer heat, keep a few towels in your vehicle and lay them over the seat. This also keeps the plastic parts of baby seats from burning little legs and arms. • You can use plain white bread to get fingerprints and smudges off of wallpaper and semigloss painted walls. Just ball up the bread center (not the crust) and rub the smudge away. • “Out of prewash and looking at a nasty grease stain? Grab your dishwashing liquid soap
Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me and Love the Bomb The opening laughter is obviously the Joker. So I deduce that this film takes place in Gotham City. The fact that everything is in black and white seems to fit this theory too. The words “Dr. Stranglelove or: How I stopped worrying and learned to love the bomb” blink on the screen. So Dr. Strangelove is the original Joker. Maybe the Joker’s father. And judging by the bombers and accents, he’s caused some disagreement with Russia and is going to attack. His assistant is some evil, stereotypical woman wearing her underwear. I can see that she seduces officers in Dr. Strangelove’s army, and I assume the other army as well. Maybe that’s the strange love? Makes sense with the quote about “10 (not the one you would put in your automatic dishwasher). It’s designed to break down grease, and I just dab it on, scrub a bit and then let it set for about a quarter of an hour. After that, I launder in hot water. It’s usually successful.” -Nancy V., via email • Check bagged frozen vegetables with the squeeze test: A bag that’s hard and solid has thawed and subsequently refrozen. You should choose another bag, one with loose, freemoving pieces.
females to each male.” Anyway, Dr. Strangelove’s main weapon is the doomsday machine. Maybe the doomsday machine is going to blast women at enemy men, thus overwhelming them and making them easy targets for murder or conquering. The Professional All right, my first view of this film showed me that Sirius Black from Harry Potter and Nina from Black Swan are both in it, which is confusing since everyone knows Sirius fell behind the veil, and Nina, well, she died too. But I guess they look younger here, so maybe this is way before Sirius knew he was a wizard, and before Nina
was a multi-personalitied ballet star. It seems that Nina goes and hangs out with a serial killer following the murder of her family. Except her mother clearly survives, because she’s around in Black Swan and is absolutely crazy. So maybe that’s why Nina chose a mass murderer (who I assume is Leon?) to live with. It looks like Sirius was the killer, and is rather off his rocker himself. I guess being on the run from the guards in Azkaban can do that to a person, and maybe he needed a muggle fireplace through which to contact Harry. Anyway, Nina goes to live with Leon, the killer, who kind of looks like the mole at the end of The Incredibles. Classic Disney plot tells me that he ends up caring for Nina and eventually stops being a killer and they live happily ever after, with Nina training tirelessly as a ballerina and Sirius Black heading to the wizarding world to give magic a shot.

Oh royalty, how we love thee Our navy isn’t royal, it’s Canadian. That goes for our air force and our army as well, now formerly known as the Maritime Command, Air Command and Land Force Command, respectively. All the armed services were amalgamated in the 1960s and stripped of all colonial ties. Our defence minister, Peter MacKay, along with others in our government feel that there is still some importance in proudly declaring ourselves a nation-state of the United Kingdom. So royal is back in, along with new uniforms for each of the once again divided sectors. The problem is Canada doesn’t really belong in the British Commonwealth. We shouldn’t be reinforcing ties to the monarchy, we should be continuing to emancipate ourselves from the U.K. so that one day the royal family will no longer appear on all of our money. Then we can add more kids to the pond hockey game. MacKay said the word royal is used to recognize the origins of the many branches of our armed services. In a way I suppose it does, but mostly it’s just another knot in
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers our union with British royalty. What’s so terrible about our servicemen and women serving the Canadian people? They shouldn’t be serving the royals, they should be serving Canada. MacKay said reinstating the term royal to our Armed Forces will allow them to be prouder and stand taller. That’s ridiculous. Rename them the Canadian Navy, Canadian Air Force and Canadian Army, without the royal prefix. Well, Canadian Army is actually the new name and the only one of the three that isn’t royal. I am proud of the people who serve this country all over the world. I don’t know why the government feels the members of the Armed Forces wouldn’t be as proud to serve
Canada, as they would to serve the Queen. Is MacKay suggesting there is something inherently wrong with Canada that will always resign us to second place in the minds of the men and women who serve our country? Well, probably not intentionally, but that’s what it sounds like. It’s like he’s suggesting it’s not good enough to be just Canadian, when we could instead be Royally Canadian. We need to be separating the monarchy and our country the same way we have separated the church from the state. Though we still have God Save the Queen. Maybe that will have to be next on the chopping block. While we’re axing useless traditions, we can also do away with the playing of the national anthem at the start of school days, sporting events and just anytime we have a minute to fill when there is a large gathering of people. Think of all the hours saved over the course of a lifetime, if we only had to listen to the national anthem once a year, when Canada wins the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.
US crops drive commodity prices Canadian Prairie farmers like to think of what they do, in terms of crop production, having an impact in the world, and it does in the sense that much of what they produce is headed to export. But the United States, based on its size, is a much more important cog in turning the price gears higher or lower based on production and even production estimates. The markets pay close attention to the United States Department of Agriculture numbers when they are released and are usually primed and ready to react if those numbers are different than what the market has anticipated. Last week, the USDA report saw markets reacting in a bullish fashion as the two primary crops, corn and soybeans, had production estimates cut more than had been expected. The dual reduction in production is noteworthy since it ripples through both the cereal side of farm production and oilseeds. As goes corn, so does Canadian barley and even wheat. Soybeans are really the price setter in terms of North American oilseeds. It can be argued the oil qualities offered by
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist canola do buffer that crop somewhat from what soybeans do, but the two must still track in the same general direction. In this case tracking corn and soybeans is a good thing since the most recent USDA numbers sent a signal that stocks of both crops are going to tighten as a result of lower production numbers. It is interesting that neither USDA estimate was dramatically lower, but still markets reacted. USDA’s corn estimate at just shy of 13 billion bushels was only one per cent smaller than traders expected and the soybean crop was four per cent below what had been anticipated. The only slightly lower corn production number was made more dramatic as the USDA pushed carryout numbers for the next crop year down five per cent, the kind of number markets do react to because any sort of weather event ahead could crunch carryout even lower, tightening the stock-
to-use ratio, a key component in establishing longer term price futures. While the USDA numbers haven’t sent markets through the roof, they do at least suggest solid prices will remain through the fall for Canadian producers who are just now starting to seriously think about this year’s harvest. It is unlikely, given wet spring conditions across most of the Canadian Prairies, that this will be the sort of bumper crop that would create a drag on prices. That is good news on the price side, but does mean farmers are not likely looking at overflowing bins either. The key for farmers here will be to get quality grain into the bin. Outside of isolated hailstorms, weather since July 1 has actually been very good across a large part of the Prairie crop-growing region, but Mother Nature must co-operate through the next six or so weeks, to ensure the best quality grain is achieved for harvest. If the weather co-operates, and with the likelihood of solid prices, 2011 could be a good year for farmers. They will not get rich based on the year, but it should pay most bills and maybe leave a bit for planting next spring, and in farming that is often the best you can expect.

A free Internet or paid services
He She By: Jordan Baker
The Internet is a crazy place. It’s a virtual world that houses anything and everything. If it’s not on the Internet, it simply doesn’t exist. Because it is so vast, there are two ways you can get everything on the Internet: you can pay for it, or you can get it for free. We aren’t here to get into the ethical questions of what should be paid for and what should be free, but ask whether paid services or free services are the way to go. Facebook and other social networking sites are free. There’s no monthly subscription to Twitter. Google is the master of providing great services online with no expense handed on to the consumer. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. These companies store an incredible amount of information about you. You are essentially a customer to Facebook, though you don’t give them a dime. That means in the relationship between you and this Internet service, they give and you take. The problem with this kind of relationship is that nobody wants to just give and give and keep on giving without getting something in return. Google and Facebook make all of their money off advertising, which only pays them because they have so many customers, but they still aren’t making money directly from their customers. There isn’t much loyalty there. These companies are known to be a little loose with the personal information they store. You don’t like that your information is being sent out to the advertisers? Well, without a dollar put toward that service, you don’t have much of a voice. It’s like people who don’t vote; they can’t complain. The advertisers pay the corporation, so if they want something back, they’ll get it. Other sites, like the music site Spotify, which isn’t available yet in Canada, offer both free and subscription services. The free service is nice, but minimal, while the paid service includes perks like access even when offline. With the paid for service, you know you’re getting a superior product and one that has some kind of accountability. News sites are moving over to pay services, and if that becomes universal, consumers will have the choice to pay for news or risk being badly misinformed via some free news service. Free things are great, but when you pay a couple of dollars for these services you should be able to expect some sort of guarantee.

Paying for stuff online is garbage. And by “stuff” I mean “social media services” and by “garbage” I mean “I’m not going to do it.” Social media wouldn’t be nearly as popular if it cost money. I’m positive that I would never have joined Facebook had I been introduced to it as “the ultimate way to stalk people online, for only $14.99 a month.” Somehow, putting a price on Facebook creeping makes it that much less appealing and much more of a felony and invasion of privacy. It’s not like the owners of social media sites aren’t making bank off our hours logged tweeting and creeping. Businesses opt to advertise on these sites, earning the social media owners all sorts of cash. Sure, users’ personal information has the risk of being abused by these advertisers, but somehow one’s identity seems like a small price to pay when you’re lying in bed reading every tweet ever posted by your favourite singer without paying any sort of a subscription or membership fee. Plus sometimes the advertisements are convenient. A local Estevan girl found an advertisement for a beauty pageant on Facebook, and that was a lifechanging experience for her. I’ve clicked on links for online clothing shops that I’ve never regretted visiting. It’s kind of like seeing a commercial on TV for a new brand of makeup, and rather than having to get your laptop out to search it, you can click the link right there and check it out. So advertising to make sure my social networking is free is OK with me. I get that there are instances when paying for services is appropriate. Music, for one, is a service that I’m totally OK with paying for. When my favourite artists release a new CD, nine times out of 10 I’m going to buy it on iTunes. Sure, I’ll sometimes pirate a couple of singles or maybe a handful of classics, but I usually find that throwing away a dollar on an awesome song is worth it. That money keeps my favourite artists in business, as far as I’m concerned. There’s also the fact that songs bought on iTunes sync so nicely and easily with my iPhone, and already have the cover artwork entered. And I am nothing if not grouchy when all the songs in my iTunes don’t have their cover artwork.

Colin and Genevieve gave in to their passion and then went back to hating each other. Phyllis told Sharon that despite their past differences, she believes in her innocence. THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, AUGUST 19, 2011
Aug. 24 the D4 cometh For 99.99999 per cent of humanity (and maybe a few more 999s), Aug. 24, 2011 will not be a big deal. For professional photographers, it could be the second coming. Or more like the fourth coming. Aug. 24 is the widely expected launch date of the next generation of Nikon professional camera bodies. Following the naming convention, it will be called the D4. Every four years, like clockwork, Nikon releases a new generation of pro bodies. The release allows enough time for pro photographers to get their hands on the latest technology and know it inside and out before the next summer Olympics, which, in this case, is London 2012. Over the next several years, this technology will filter down into the consumer cameras that mere mortals purchase. Nikon and Canon have been going at it hammer and tongs for over a decade now, since the introduction of their first pro digital camera. For the longest time, Canon was in the lead, as evidenced by the vast majority of distinctive white Canon lenses on the sidelines of major sporting events. But that changed four years ago. Canon seriously fumbled the ball with its Canon 1D Mark III. Its autofocus was unreliable, especially in warmer temperatures. The people who buy these cameras make their living
By Samantha Mazzotta Fast Roof Patching Q: While organizing the attic, I noticed there was an area of the floor that looked like it had gotten wet recently. I looked at the roof above, but did not notice any holes. But there is a little water streak down the plywood. Is this a serious problem? -- Carol H., New Bedford, Mass. A: If you address it quickly, it will not become a serious problem. Minor leaks in a roof can be patched fairly quickly. They’re often caused by damage to the shingles on top of the roof, which occurs over time due to debris strikes, ice buildup or just general stress from extremes of hot and cold. During the next rainstorm, go into the attic and note where the water is seeping. Follow the trail of
Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile with them, and can’t afford anything but top-notch performance, all the time. I sat in on a presentation at a Las Vegas photography convention by Ron Wyatt, one of the top sports photographers in the world. A Canon shooter for decades, he felt so skittish about the poor performance of the Canon 1D Mark III that he called up Nikon just a few weeks before going to the Beijing Olympics, which he would be shooting for a little company known as Kodak. Nikon fitted him out with, oh, about $120,000 worth of gear, including a number of Nikon D3 cameras, in time to capture some of the most iconic moments of the 2008 Games. The D3 not only had a really good autofocus, it also had something no one had ever dreamed of up until that point - the ability to shoot ISO 25,600 (1/256 the light of broad daylight). It allowed photographers to shoot with dramatically less light, or to speed up their shutter speed enormously. The camera I use, the D700, is essentially the same camera in a smaller form. Soon you saw a lot more black Nikon lenses on the sidelines. Then two years later, the updated D3, called the D3s, made it possible water upward until you can see an entry point. That is the likely area of damage. Mark the spot clearly and brightly for now (put a piece of bright tape or tack a bright piece of paper over the spot). To repair, you’ll need to be able to access the rooftop safely, with safety harness, rope and ladder, and have a helper. If you’re not able to do this, contact a roofing professional to do the repair. If you can do it yourself, first re-mark the leaky area. From the attic, take a large (ten-penny) nail and drive it straight upward through the bottom layer so that it juts out past the shingles above. (Don’t sink it in all the way, as you’ll need to remove it later.) Gather your repair materials: spare shingles, roofing cement, roofing nails, hammer and pry bar. Make your way safely to the rooftop, with your helper minding the ladder and safety rope. Locate the upward-jutting nail. Remove the nail and patch the hole with a dab of roofing cement. Inspect the shingle for damage. If it is very minor,
to shoot at ISO 102,400. That’s less light than the human eye can perceive. It can literally shoot in the dark. In so doing, Nikon also largely abandoned the megapixel game, where for years camera manufacturers kept making more megapixels, even though they really didn’t make much better pictures. While it did make a 24 megapixel D3x, it focused on making better pixels, not more pixels. The things I can do with the D700 today still amaze me. The third generation of Nikon pro bodies literally changed photography. This is why I’m eagerly awaiting to see what the D4 has in store. It won’t be cheap – I might have to sell a child to buy it. For the expected $5,500 or so price tag, it should hopefully wash my dishes and do my laundry, too, if I can ever afford it. Ironically, all the current photo editing software and iPhone photo apps are chock full of settings that let your pictures look like old, washed out, bad quality colour prints, heavily vignetted sepia tones or that they were shot with poor quality lenses. The more we can do amazing things with photography, it appears the more they want it to stay the same. -(Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. He can be reached at brian. zinchuk@sasktel.net ) like a ripped edge or small crack, it can be patched with roofing cement and a piece of spare shingle cut to fit. Or, you can completely remove the shingle, sliding it out carefully from the ones above and to the side, and slide in a replacement. Tack down on the top and sides with dabs of roofing cement. Tap in roofing nails along the top of the replacement shingle, holding the shingle above it up, then press the shingle above it back down into place. Secure the bottom of the shingle with a couple small dabs of cement underneath the flap. HOME TIP: August is prime time for roofing repairs, as the hot and relatively dry days allow for plenty of work to be done and for roofing materials to set correctly. Hockey world hoping for a Crosby comeback Sidney Crosby is showing up on our TV sets every couple of hours selling skates and sticks for a Canadian sporting goods firm – personally, I prefer “Croz” over Sid’s choice, “SC87” – but the big question is this: Will Sidney show up in the Pittsburgh Penguins lineup during the 2011-12 National Hockey League season? When we last saw the best hockey player in the world, he was skating groggily off the ice, after getting smashed into the end boards in a game against Tampa Bay, five days after getting his bell rung with an elbow to the head Jan. 1 in the Winter Classic outdoor game against the Washington Capitals. The “upper-body injury” turned into a seasonending concussion and it doomed the Penguins’ Stanley Cup playoff hopes. Hockey fans can only hope it didn’t doom Crosby’s career. The list of players whose careers ended prematurely by concussion is long and, unfortunately,
Estevan
Mercury www.estevanmercury.ca
getting longer. Eric Lindros’s grey matter got mangled, and he joined his brother Brett in early retirement. Marc Savard of Boston has had two serious concussions – he played in only 25 games last season – and speculation is that his career is over. Keith Primeau didn’t get to his prime before his NHL time was up and Pat LaFontaine was almost as good as Crosby is today, but concussions prematurely ended his career in 1998. If Crosby’s career were to end, it would sadly rank with the “what-ifs” associated with the likes of early-retired Sandy Koufax, Barrie Sanders and Bobby Orr. What must be worrisome to fans of the Penguins is that off-season news about Crosby has been muted. If all were well, the trumpets of Sid’s 100-per-cent recovery would be blaring. We’ve heard he’s skating a bit, and spending quiet time back home in Coal Harbour, Nova Scotia, not to mention his SportChek commercials, but there has been no definitive word that Sid’s completely healthy, which is horrible news for the NHL. Last year, he was so far ahead of the field in the NHL scoring race at mid-season that Gretzky references were occasionally made. Hockey fans can only hope the comparisons this season continue to be with Gretzky and not Lindros or LaFontaine. • R.J. Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Quarterback Matt Leinart changed his mind about joining the Seahawks and re-signed with the Texans. This may be be-
cause a) Seattle signed Sports Tarvaris Jackson, Columnist or b) the bench is warmer in Houston.” • Comedy writer Jerry Perisho: “Tiger Woods’s recently-fired caddie, Steve Williams, caddied Adam Scott to victory in the Bridgestone Invitational. The only thing that could have made it sweeter would have been Elin Nordegren giving Williams a big sloppy wet kiss on the 18th green.” • Another one from RJ Currie: “St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina got suspended five games for a confrontation with umpire Rob Drake. On the bright side, drought-stricken farmers in the Midwest have invited him to yell at their crops.” • Greg Cote, Miami Herald: “Danica Patrick confirms she will move from IndyCar to NASCAR next year. Be interesting to see if she can carry not winning to a whole new level.” • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “Earnhardt Ganassi Racing fired two crew members after they were arrested on marijuana-related charges. Suspicions were reportedly aroused when the engine kept smoking.” • Comedy writer Alan Ray, on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones not taking exhibition games too seriously: “He only interferes during the first quarter.” • Budd Bailey of the Buffalo News, on pizzachain mogul Alex Meruelo saying he’ll keep the Hawks in Atlanta: “Basketball fans were happy he didn’t buy it to go.” • Another one from Cote, on the NFL’s new
Bruce Penton
random tests for human growth hormone: “Why random? I’m no doctor, but wouldn’t it be smart to target the guys whose necks are roughly the width of their shoulders?” • More clever wordplay from Perry: “In Friday’s 1-0 loss to the Angels, the Mariners had a runner picked off first, another caught trying to steal second and yet another nabbed rounding third too far. Just one foolhardy tag at home, and the M’s would’ve gotten picked for the cycle.” • Matt Tiffany of the San Diego Union-Tribune, on Plaxico Burress announcing his own signing with the Jets: “Don’t shoot the messenger.” • Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel: “And to think I used to wish I could play golf like Tiger Woods, and now Tiger Woods wishes he could play golf like me.” • Bianchi again: “A Baptist preacher at a NASCAR race in Nashville last week said the invocation and gave thanks for, among other things, ‘GM Performance Technology and Sunoco Racing Fuel.’ Only in NASCAR could Jesus be turned into a corporate spokesman. • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: “This is so Dennis Rodman. In his Hall of Fame speech, he thanked Howard Stern but not David Stern.” • Snipped from Perry’s Sideline Chatter: Reader “Ed,” to The New York Times, on the best reason to keep going to Mets games: “Because when you call up to order tickets and ask them what time the game starts, the clerk says, ‘What time can you be here?’” Care to comment? Greg Marshall’s dream job has turned into a nightmare. After waiting 17 long seasons as an assistant coach in the CFL, the former all-star defensive lineman couldn’t wait to finally get his hands on the head coaching job with the league’s flagship franchise, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, in 2011. To say things haven’t gone according to plan, however, would be an understatement. Seven games into his first season, Marshall’s Riders are a disappointing 1-6 and even the hard-core optimists in the Rider Nation are becoming more than a little discouraged. The most recent deflating loss came Friday night at Mosaic Stadium in a West Division showdown where the rival Calgary Stampeders romped out of town with a 45-35 victory, a score that greatly flattered the home side. It was the greatest offensive explosion of the year for the Riders as they gained over 500 yards and scored their highest point total of the season. However it was the defence who let them down
Friday, allowing Calgary to score on their first four possessions including three touchdowns. The Stamps held a 31-14 half-time lead and did enough things in the second half to hang onto the victory. “If I knew the answer to that, I’d be a rich man,” Rider defensive coordinator Richie Hall said when asked how his players could come out so flat. “Our heads just weren’t in it in the first half.” It was a complete role reversal from the team’s prior games where the offence languished woefully while the defence held the team in games until the point where it was clear they weren’t going to come back. “We stunk on defence,” huffed Marshall after the game. “The first few weeks we weren’t good defensively and were good on offence, then it flipped. Tonight we reverted back to the first two weeks of the season. The low light of the night was when they marched it right

But right now the outlook is grim. The once-proud Riders aren’t showing signs that they’ll get their game together any time soon. I maintain this team has more talent than its record indicates but they’re closing in on the halfway turn and rather than pulling together, they seem to be unravelling. That’s where Greg Marshall comes in. He is a muchdecorated football man with a resume which speaks for itself. Right now his team is looking to him for the leadership and inspiration they require. The next 11 games will prove if he can get the job done. I believe he can. (Rod Pedersen is the voice of the Riders on 620 CKRM Radio)

PROVINCIAL REGINA - Rookie Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Greg Marshall and his assistants find themselves in an awkward position these days. As they prepared their underachieving squad for last Friday’s game at Mosaic Stadium against the Calgary Stampeders, they were also trying to evaluate the new recruits brought in by general manager Brendan Taman. While it hardly compares with the airlifts of the past when NFL cuts would have found their way north of the border by now, the movement has been fast and furious. The new faces last week were those of receivers Dallas Baker, Freddie Barnes and Tyree Burks, and running back Yvenson Bernard. Those players weren’t likely to figure in last week, but Marshall would like to have them ready as quickly as possible in order to present offensive co-ordinator Doug Berry with additional options. Jets forward Rick Rypien has been found dead in his Alberta home. The Jets confirmed the 27-year-old forward’s death in a statement Monday night. The RCMP in Crowsnest Pass, Alta., said they received a call at 12:30 p.m. MT concerning a “sudden and non-suspicious” death. *** PITTSBURGH, Pa. Sidney Crosby’s summer vacation is almost over. Still, there’s no telling when the Pittsburgh Penguins star will return to work. General manager Ray Shero said Monday the former MVP is still dealing with concussion-like symptoms and it’s too soon to know if Crosby will be available when the Penguins open camp next month. “There’s no expectation from me that he won’t be ready or he will be ready,” Shero said. Crosby hasn’t played in a game since Jan. 5, missing the rest of the regular season and Pittsburgh’s first-round playoff loss to Tampa Bay as he slowly recovered from a concussion. He said in April he would be back
for training camp, but with about a month to go before the team reports, Shero wouldn’t guarantee No. 87 will be in uniform. INTERNATIONAL GENEVA - Invited by FIFA to propose reforms, Transparency International has urged world soccer’s governing body to order independent investigations into past corruption allegations to help overcome a “crisis of trust.” The global anti-corruption watchdog also advised FIFA to create an independent group of soccer’s stakeholders — including fans, sponsors, clubs and members of the media — which could oversee the probes and other widespread changes. FIFA president Sepp Blatter asked Transparency International for help after allegations of election bribery, World Cup vote-rigging and officials unethically seeking favours tarnished the organization’s reputation. The suggested reform agenda is outlined in a tough-talking, eight-page document.

Changes to come for child welfare system Provincial REGINA - MĂŠtis Nation of Saskatchewan president Robert Doucette is a child of “the 60s Scoopâ€? — a term applied to a time when many First Nations and Metis children were taken from their families and put into non-aboriginal foster homes. Doucette was just four months old when he was put into foster care because authorities decided his teenage mother was too young to care for him. Now, he’s trying to help future generations avoid a similar fate. On Friday, Doucette signed a letter of understanding with the Saskatchewan government pledging to change the way the province’s child welfare system works. The province also signed a letter of understanding with the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations. National HALIFAX - The federal government is restoring the once familiar names of the air and maritime divisions of the Canadian Forces. Federal Defence Minister Peter MacKay says they will again officially be known as the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Canadian Air Force. Land Force Command will be called simply the Canadian Army. MacKay says the change is intended to help those in uniform reconnect with their historic past. ***

WATERTOWN, N.Y. - A published report says Canada and the United States don’t believe the St. Lawrence Seaway needs to be expanded to allow larger, ocean-bound ships to enter the system. The Watertown Daily Times in New York state reports that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has officially scratched the expansion idea. This comes nearly a decade after one of Corps’ own reports suggested additional study of possibly widening the waterway, deepening channels in the St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes, and constructing larger locks. The Corps’ most recent report on the Great Lakes navigation system
says those ideas will no longer be considered because both the U.S. and Canada feel expansion of the system is not warranted at this time. *** QUEBEC - The Quebec government has given some breathing room to investors trying to relaunch one of Canada’s last remaining asbestos mines. Economic Development Minister Clement Gignac says investors have a six-week extension, until Oct. 1, to get financing that will enable them to qualify for a government loan guarantee. Baljit Chadha, who leads the consortium of investors in the project, praised the government decision and said there is

every indication the mine will reopen soon. International PHILADELPHIA - A Philadelphia man whose former girlfriend allegedly offered $1,000 on Facebook for someone to kill him has been gunned down hours after a judge upheld felony charges against his ex and the teen who allegedly offered to kill him. Police say 22-yearold Corey White was shot Monday evening in West Philadelphia, but investigators aren’t sure why he was killed. Earlier Monday, a city
judge approved murder solicitation and murder conspiracy charges, respectively, against his ex-girlfriend and the 18-year-old who allegedly responded to her post in June. Authorities say 20-year-old London Eley made a post offering “a stack to kill her baby’s father. They say Timothy Bynum said he’d do it. *** PARIS - All countries that use the euro should have mandatory balanced budgets and better co-ordination of economic policy, the leaders of France and Germany said Tuesday,
pushing for long-term political solutions instead of immediate financial measures like a single European bond. French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel also pledged to harmonize their countries’ corporate taxes in a move aimed at showing the eurozone’s largest members are “marching in lockstep to protect the euro. Both leaders stressed their commitment to defending the common currency, a cornerstone of integration on this longfractured continent.

Memories Take Shape With Homemade Clay Think of all the experiences your kids have already stored up in their memory pool since summer vacation began. Talk about their recollections together, then put them into shape with this fabulous play clay made with baking soda, cornstarch and water. It’s a snap to concoct and especially amazing to watch the magical transformations when the liquid mixture turns into a mashed potatolike consistency right before your eyes. Chemistry in the kitchen was never so much fun. The pliable, smooth white play clay is a perfect medium for letting out the creativity of imaginative minds. Shape sculptures of the animals and birds your kids gawked at while at the zoo, a dolphin they met at
Once they create sculptures or beads from the dough, let them harden overnight, and your kids will have another fun afternoon putting their strokes of color on their objects. Here’s the simple stuff you’ll need to make the dough: --2 cups baking soda --1 cup cornstarch --1 1/4 cups water --Saucepan --Candy coloring (optional), available where cake decorations are sold; food coloring also works --Acrylic paints and brushes (optional) Here’s the fun: 1. Place the baking soda, cornstarch and water in the saucepan. An adult should stir the mixture over low heat for about 15 minutes. Remove from heat and continue stirring. 2. When the mixture takes on a mashed-potato consistency, it’s ready for play. If you’d like, separate
it into small batches and color each batch with a few drops of candy coloring. If you leave the clay natural, you can let it dry for about 12 hours and paint it with acrylics. Tips: --For sculptures, put a small lump of clay in the barrel of a garlic press and squeeze to make long hair to plop on a clown’s head. --For beads, roll small ball shapes in your hands and poke a hole through each one with a skewer. When hard, string on a bit of elastic through the holes. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Congratulations Estevan Football Family! SportsCentre host feels at home in Saskatchewan Jay Onrait, the taller half of TSN SportsCentre’s two hosts, has deep roots in Saskatchewan and attested it has been this province in the past that has stuck most in the memory. He, along with co-host Dan O’Toole, will be gracing Estevan with his presence and that of $25,000 to be donated to Estevan Minor Football, as part of the Kraft Celebration Tour on Aug. 25. During last summer’s tour, Outlook was Onrait’s favourite place to visit. His grandparents on both sides of the family are from Saskatchewan. “I think that was our favourite stop of all last year,” he said. “We just find that people are so generous and fun to us when we come to their town, and the smaller the town the more fun we have. Estevan’s actually the biggest town we’re going to this year.” That doesn’t mean Estevan is expected to be the low point of the tour. “We encourage people to get there early because there’s lots of stuff to do before the show,” he added. While the pair of SportCentre hosts will be visiting the Estevan Motor Speedway, the stock car race between Onrait and O’Toole might not be happening. A TSN PR rep has said O’Toole
is likely to climb in one of the cars but that Onrait may have to sit that one out. The rest of the itinerary for the SportsCentre stop is still being ironed out. Onrait said that people should show up expecting a show. “We do a ton of dancing and singing and all sorts of general goofiness to get everybody ready. It’s just a blast.” For Onrait, it isn’t only about coming to Saskatchewan but also about seeing the rest of Canada, from one coast to the next. “The biggest thing is probably the fact we just get to see parts of the country we might not normally get to see. The thing I’m always amazed at is we finally get to travel within our own country. I think we, as Canadians, don’t always travel as much within our country as we’d like to, and when we do get a vacation, we want to go south.” This trip across the country isn’t exactly a vacation for the SportsCentre gang, however; they still have to produce to a show every day. Onrait said a fun day at the office is par for the course, and with production hitting the road, the tour gives the hosts an extra chance to stretch their legs. He noted that the tour’s purpose is not to give himself and O’Toole
much needed space. “In all seriousness, we get along great, and the show’s never been more fun. We have a great time doing the show. It’s a nice way to make a living,” he said. “ There’s a lot of people doing more important and harder things than Dan and I do. We’re just entertainers, and we like to provide a little levity to everyone’s day for sports fans, and I think we do that. “I asked Dan’s wife, Mrs. O’Toole, if she watched our show, and she said no, and then I mentioned it on air, and
she called Dan a tattletale, so I feel I may have started a domestic (dispute) between them that I didn’t mean to do. I’ve tried to learn not to open my mouth about those things and mind my own business about Dan’s marriage.” That’s not the only time Onrait admitted to saying the wrong thing on the air. “We always get in trouble for blurting the wrong things out, but luckily we have a very supportive boss.” What’s his favourite memory of his days as a SportsCentre host so far? “We’ve had so many,

like to do this show the way someone else would like to do it. Sports are supposed to be fun.” His latest show, The Week That Was is on MuchMore and is a humourous look at pop culture events. The last show aired Sunday, and while he’s not sure if it’s coming back next season, he hopes so. Onrait will be in Estevan to host SportsCentre on Aug. 25 with co-host O’Toole and the TSN crew as the Kraft Celebration Tour rolls through southern Saskatchewan.

it’s been so much fun over the years. Maybe the time I dressed as the Phantom of the Opera. It’s always nice when you can show off your pipes for the nation. We’re pretty low budget. It is Canadian television, right, so as low budget as it gets.” Onrait loves to give a performance, as evidenced by his claim that one of his favourite moments is dressing up as a character from a musical-theatre production. “I don’t really know where (my sense of humour) came from. by Samantha Weaver • It was the 37th president of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, who made the following sage -- and somehow appropriate -- observation: ғure there are dishonest men in local government. But there are dishonest men in national government too. • Pasta has been around since 5,000 B.C., and it was invented in China, not Italy. • If you’re planning a visit to the United Kingdom, you might want to keep in mind this rather obscure statute: It’s illegal to stand within 100 yards of the reigning monarch if you don’t have socks on. • A groundhog can move 700 pounds of dirt in a single day. • When the two-andone-half-hour finale of the groundbreaking television show M*A*S*H aired on Feb. 28, 1983, advertisers
paid a hefty $450,000 for a single 30-second spot. That was $50,000 more than the same spot cost at the Super Bowl that year. • Baseball players didn’t have numbers on their uniforms until 1929, and it was the New York Yankees that were the first to adopt the practice. • In the early 18th century, newspapers were not cheap, but the stories published therein were often people’s only link to the events of the day. Since they were so coveted, newspapers were often brought as a gift when a gentleman was calling on a lady friend, much as candy or flowers might be brought in a different era. *** Thought for the Day: No one really listens to anyone else, and if you try it for a while you’ll see why. -- Mignon McLaughlin (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.
