Religion leads Heier to Timeless Furniture From Nicaragua with love. Estevan’s Lindsay Heier and his wife, Amanda, have had dealings in South America for the better part of two decades. Now they are bringing their creations to Canada to add more support to the people of the second-poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Heier is a native of Estevan and graduated from the Estevan Comprehensive School.

He and his wife run Timeless Furniture, a company in Nicaragua that manufactures various items out of hard woods, primarily mahogany and Brazilian cherry, harvested in the Nicaraguan jungle. Heier said his business model is to create unique, hand-crafted and high quality pieces. Not only does 10 per cent of all sales go to a missionary institute in Nicaragua, but he uses

highly-skilled locals to craft everything from dining room tables to mirror frames. Heier calls the furniture, “classical designs for for a castle.” The works are made via custom order, and they don’t skimp on material. He mentioned a dining table that sits 16 people weighed about one tonne. The pieces are all built of hard woods, not plywood. “Some of the heavier woods have a very beautiful grain,” he said. “You get a series of different kinds of woods. The wood is like fruits in Nicaragua.” The fruits differs between here and there, as does the wood. “With the wood grains, it’s something very exotic. It’s nice to bring that beauty to Estevan.” Because the furniture is so unique and carved by hand, not run through a machine on a production line, the pieces slowly become priceless. “It doesn’t depreciate. It automatically becomes an heirloom as soon as it is bought,” he said. Heier said it was his religious side that kept him working in the poor country for so long. A sense of social justice and being able to train and give 25 people jobs in the shop as carpenters and carvers are what he considers fulfilling

Life is about fulfilling dreams.” Heier went to Nicaragua after graduating university in 1992. He taught theology at a Catholic school and eventually met his wife. While in the country, he also did mission work at an orphanage and delinquent jail. He was later a dean at the Ave Maria University in southwest Florida. He received a master’s in 2000, and originally intended to pursue a Ph.D, but decided to change to a doctorate. He said as a result of this change, he had an “unplanned sabbatical.” This is how Timeless Furniture started. Amanda is an architect and he said she had always wanted to design furniture. This is one of those dreams Heier said he felt needed to

be fulfilled. He said they drew up a simple business plan and then his brother asked if they could design and built all the furniture for a new house he was building in Trinidad and Tobago. Heier is now studying to be a deacon, and he is developing the Centre for Catholic Missions in Nicaragua, which he calls a missionary institute for

carpentry and trades. The site of the missionary building is on a coffee farm and they are in the process of registering as a non-profit organization in the United States. Construction on the site is ongoing. The first shipment is in Canada now and on display at the St. Joseph’s Prayer Centre Bookstore and Gift Shoppe in Estevan.

One-on-one with Tom Hardwood Tom Harwood is the new leisure services manager for the City of Estevan. He began working in Estevan Aug. 15. Where are you from? I was raised in Princeton, B.C. Prior to being in Prince George, B.C., I spent 11 years at the University of Victoria, both going to school and working. I spent a total of 17 years in Victoria, and more recently up in Prince George. I also worked with Vancouver curling club; the City of Chilliwack in their arenas division; Recreational Bay, which is a municipality within the city of Victoria. I’ve also worked in arenas in Princeton, and in a curling club in Princeton. What were you doing before you moved to Estevan? I was at the City of Prince George, B.C. I worked as the manager of the CN Centre. It’s a 6,000 seat event centre that hosts the WHL Cougars, concerts and events. Whenever we didn’t have something going on, the local community used it as an ice rink. What were your responsibilities doing that? I was responsible for the operations. Anything to do with the facility. The staffing, hiring, discipline, maintenance. I had a maintenance staff, I had a cleaning staff, I had another crew for concerts and things like that. Anything that happened in the building, I was responsible for. Ensuring that when we had a concert, we did the set up and take down for the concerts. I was responsible for saying yes or no for whether something could be accomplished. Sometimes people want to do things that the floor won’t be able to handle, or the rafters wouldn’t be able to handle. You have to be able to say yes or no to these things. Did you meet many interesting performers while working in Prince George? We had a really good time the last three years that I was there. I met Elton John, Reba McEntire, Toby Keith, Jeff Dunham, Larry the Cable Guy, ZZ Top, Buckcherry, Papa Roach, Blue Man Group. I have a really nice picture with the Blue Man Group: blue tie, blue faces. I had a

pretty great experience with the entertainers that came to facility. We did things like bull riding, and monster trucks. It wasn’t just drop a floor down, throw a concert in. We opened the venue up to whatever the public wanted to see. Once a year, one of the local church groups would invite all the churches within about 150-200 miles. They would come in and they would clean it so that they felt it was appropriate for their venue and then they would hold two-day church meetings and church goings. So we were very open — it was an events centre. It was for the community. We had all the high school grads and and the college grad in our facility. It got well used and people enjoyed it. How important is community to your position? A facility cannot be completed without a community saying “Yes, this is what we want and here is our commitment, both corporate and personal.” People pay the taxes and taxes pay for it. So at an ice rink, a lot of times you have people who figure skate, play hockey, maybe broomball. They’re a very niche group that gets to use an arena. With an events centre, we’re trying to bring in events and provide a facility that the community, everybody in the community, can then use. We would bring in Charlie Pride, because there are people in their 50s, 60s, and 70s who just love Charlie Pride. He’s a very amazing entertainer; he’s a funny guy. We would try to focus on trying to bring in different events for different age groups. So (Charlie Pride) would bring in the older people. I have pictures of myself with the Sesame Street people and with the Backyardigans, because I have a seven and a five-yearold child (and a six-monthold) but this was to bring in those younger families. We’d have events like that. And then you’d bring in country and rock, and things like video games

live for the youth, the 14to 30-year-olds. We try to ensure that we brought a nice mix in. It’s got to be something bigger than just an ice rink. Is this the vision you have for Spectra Place? I have a vision of recreation. Spectra is one part of the position. We have an aquatic centre, we have a seniors’ centre attached, we have a library, we have a whole lot of parks, we have trail systems, sports parks, baseball diamonds, soccer fields. I think because I do have that belief that it’s for community, I think that does fit well with the leisure manager position with the City of Estevan because what we’re trying to do is make sure everybody knows we have an aquatics area. It has access for the young kids, swimming lanes for people who want to do that, and a waterside. It’s an amazing facility for a town this size. To make sure that people know we have it and use it. Let them know about the different parks around their houses. In the summer, people want to get outside. I know they want to head to a lake, and spend a week by a lake, but they have to realize that within the city, in an evening, they can go walk and have their kids play or have themselves go for a nice walk along a trail. It’s a park-like setting: you can get away from your work day in the city. How did you find out about the Estevan position? It was a head hunting company that actually came to me. Raven Group presented the position to me. I ended

We need to also sit and staging, we have a lot down and identify what the of things here that we don’t people want to see, whether have to rent or bring. So that’s voting on a website or what ends up happening is on Facebook or some social that it makes it easier for media, or whether it’s going a show to come, and then out and talking to the radio it’s figuring out who we How are you finding station, saying “What music want to try and get. up with a Skype meeting with the city manager, the operations manager, and the HR person, Calvin. In the Skype meeting, they were very open, they were joking amongst each other. It was a great atmosphere. So I took a trip to Estevan, checked out the schools, checked out what’s available for my children and my wife, things like that. It seemed like a good fit for us as a family. We decided it would work well for us.

What are you most looking forward to doing here in Estevan? The fun stuff coming up immediately is the grand opening for a brand-new facility. That’s the easy fun stuff. I come into a position, two weeks later we have TSN in the community. So there’s a lot of easy, fun stuff that I’m looking forward to immediately. Once we get passed that, recreation. The majority of people coming through the door in recreation are happy, they want to be there. It’s a fun atmosphere. Anything specific that you’d like to see happen in Estevan? Perspective

The freedom to be heard, the inclination to shut up I am certainly an advocate of free speech. After all, it’s pretty important to our industry. Sometimes people say stupid things. I’m not easily offended, but when it comes to intolerance and hate, my normally cool blood will boil. There have been a number of tragedies in the past week, and as always, where there is misery, there is someone trying to salt the wounds of those who are hurt. That’s what online comment sections are for. On Sunday there was a tornado in Goderich, Ont., a neighbouring town to where I grew up, about a 15 minute drive straight toward Lake Huron. It did some serious damage to the octagonal square in the central part of the town, injured about 40 people and caused one fatality: Normand Laberge. While most of the comments on the news story showed some care and concern, there were others that thought now was the appropriate time to show how much they disliked the now former NDP leader Jack Layton, who died on Monday.

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers A commenter on The Globe and Mail’s website for the tornado story said, “To [sic] bad for 61-year-old Normand Laberge, he sounded like a real hard working Canadian. Not like some carrier politician that was he!! [sic] bent on destroying this country.” Not really the time or place for this comment. Here are two people who died young, and for some all that comes to mind is how to use one tragedy to make a political point about another. Free speech is all well and good, but there is a fine line between free speech and just being plain evil. American religious zealots who picket soldiers’ funerals have every right

to do so, but that’s a pretty evil thing to do. Relishing in the death of a man whom you don’t know runs along those same lines. Sure he was a public figure who is open to fair comment, but there is a difference between attacking a politician’s stance on an issue and attacking his person. Let’s face it, I’m not a particular fan of our nation’s prime minister, but I would never wish any particular ill will towards him. I just don’t understand how there is still so much hate towards a man after he succumbs to cancer. Death, after all, is the great equalizer. Certainly, free speech shouldn’t be encroached upon only when somebody says something that upsets me. I may think a comment is out of line, but there are still 10 people who agree with it for every time I disagree. What I consider an evil act, someone else considers a bold statement of truth. It reminds me of the saying that everyone has a right to share their opinion, but that doesn’t include the right to be heard.

Ideology in the way of good business By the nature of the beast, politics is a creature given life by ideologies. At least in the case of party politics, the lines which define one party from another are based around the party’s vision of how they believe policies and legislation should determine the way we do things. While ideology often creates a philosophical position from which to start, too often that position must soften when it comes to implementing things, simply because reality and philosophy rarely match exactly. That may be where the Conservatives are about to find themselves in the case of the Canadian Wheat Board. Philosophically, the Conservatives want the single-desk sales agency for Western Canadian barley, wheat and durum headed to export to be gone. They believe farmers should have choice, as do a sizable number of producers, although with the lack of a credible, unbiased producer vote, the exact percentage of likeminded producers is rather unclear. It was no surprise that the Conservatives, once elected with their first majority in their current configuration, moved toward abolishing the CWB as it has operated for decades. The government announced some time ago that the change would be implemented Aug. 1, 2012, less

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist than a year from now. One can appreciate the Conservatives dedication to their philosophical position on the CWB, but some level of common sense needs to factor into decisions. No party should follow philosophy without fully weighing the overall impact of the decision. In situations where parties follow ideology blindly, the taxpayers often pick up the tab for it. A case in point would be the red tape-laden, ridiculously expensive and overly cumbersome long gun registry and firearm ownership laws. Even if you are a huge fan of registering long guns and of ensuring owners are recorded, you cannot be happy with the costs and the bureaucracy associated with how the Liberals implemented their vision. Now the Conservatives have made a decision on the fate of the CWB, setting its abolishment date, and are now moving ahead with a study regarding the costs and impacts of the move.

The Conservatives have been vocal opponents of the firearms’ legislation and are suggesting change is coming there, based in part on costs. That might have taxpayers thinking they had learned from the Liberal largesse, but apparently not. Agriculture Canada is advertising for an auditor to delve into the costs the government will face in changing the CWB. The audit may cost as much as a million dollars itself, as auditors work to determine potential liabilities, such as employee severance and pensions, legal costs for broken long-term contracts and other costs. There are already suggestions the costs will be in the hundreds of millions, which begs the question that if the plan the Conservatives have is cost-effective for taxpayers, or farmers. It also brings into question the actual foresight the Conservatives have on the issue. It would be better business to ascertain costs first before planning the change - not make the change - and then determine costs. We might have expected a supposedly business-leaning party to have done things differently, but sadly they failed as they chased ideology without enough regard for farmers to hold a fair plebiscite on the issue, and without regard to the costs of using taxpayer money.

All I want is world peace Tonaya Marr Let’s talk about women’s sports. Stop laughing, I’m serious. Having recently wrapped up the season with a local women’s soccer team, I’m reflecting over all my years playing sports that predominantly feature women (and I used the term “all my years” because my birthday is approaching and I’m in the middle of my mid-midlife crisis. So nostalgic.). I’ve figure skated, played softball, volleyball, golf and most recently, women’s soccer. These sports have had me dealing with mostly women or girls throughout my entire athletic career. And while I have had more positive, wonderful experiences than I can ever hope to remember, I’ve had a lot of really brutal ones, and they all seem to have one common message: women take everything so personally. But anyway, I’m not the only one who has found herself in the middle of an athletic battle with triumph and victory only minutes away, and have had only the goal of knocking down the jerk who elbowed me kind of hard last week. I haven’t forgotten, I’m just biding my time. And when I sneak attack, you’ll know why too, because you haven’t forgotten last week either.

Maybe It’s Just Me Everything is so ridiculously personal. I have a bunch of theories, of course, as to why every single comment on the golf course can be taken with the seriousness of a knife wound, but I’m not a psychologist. I may believe that my 100-level psychology class makes me qualified to perform all sorts of personality analyses on people, but realistically, it doesn’t. From my own experience, I think we’re all so sensitive because we’re conditioned to be so. This may not apply to everyone, of course, and it may not apply consistently, but I think we’re taught to expect other women to be evil and mean in competition. It’s always the soccer moms, or the dance moms, who are horrible to one another and their daughters on television shows and movies. Ever seen Ice Princess? The semi-evil female coach buys the helpless new girl a brand new pair of skates in the middle of

competition, because the coach fears the new girl is talented enough to beat the coach’s daughter. Of course the new skates aren’t broken in and cause the skater all kinds of pain and to eventually lose the competition. Moral for young skaters: we women are evil and we treat one another like crap. Also, never accept free skates. I remember coming into the women’s soccer league in town and being told by several people that everyone who plays is, well, isn’t very nice. Coming in with that attitude, it wasn’t tough for me to see what they were talking about. It would be stupid to say that there aren’t unnecessary words thrown around, or maybe a bit of shoving when the ref isn’t looking. But are we rude because we’re all just mean, nasty people, or because we expect one another to be cruel? Are we hateful because of current problems and heat-of-themoment anger, or because of years-long grudges and

because we’re been told to “watch out for the ___ team, they’re a bunch of hags” when we join the league? Clearly I would have quit athletics years ago had all of the feuding been too much. Sure, I’ve gone home ragging and cursing more times than I’m going to admit, and I’m sure people have complained about me and my attitude before (but only like, once or twice). I just think it would be nice to enter a sport and not immediately get told who to watch out for. I’m going to make my own enemies from now on, and I think women in every sport should be given that chance as well.

Sask. foster homes improving but still not great READY-TO-MOVE HOMES FOR SALE 1-877-854-5724 www.pioneerhomes.net

PROVINCIAL SASKATOON - Saskatchewan’s children’s advocate says the number of kids in overcrowded foster homes is down since a scathing report came out that likened one place to a

puppy mill. But Bob Pringle says hundreds remain in homes with too many children and are still at risk. Pringle says 483 children, or 28.8 per cent, lived in foster homes with more than four children at the end of last year — which exceeds the current capacity guideline. That’s a significant drop from 2008 when nearly half of all children in foster care were placed in overcrowded conditions. Pringle says he’s glad the numbers are down, but adds the Ministry of Social Services can’t guarantee the safety of children in such homes. He says there are serious cases of unsafe physical surroundings, and complaints of abuse or neglect go uninvestigated. *** NORTH BATTLEFORD, Sask. - Mounties say a three-year-old girl has died after she was attacked by dogs in west-central Saskatchewan. RCMP got an emergency call Sunday night that a young child had been injured by dogs on the Mosquito First Nation, about 35 kilometres south of the Battlefords. Police say the little girl suffered substantial injuries and was pronounced

dead shortly after arrival at hospital in North Battleford. An investigation found that the child had wandered to a nearby yard area where she encountered two dogs and then the attack happened. NATIONAL OTTAWA - Federal NDP Leader Jack Layton has died. The party issued a statement Monday morning, just weeks after a gaunt Layton held a news conference to announce he was fighting a second bout of cancer. The party says Layton died peacefully at 4:45 a.m. ET Aug. 22 at his Toronto home, surrounded by family and loved ones. Funeral details have not yet been announced. *** RESOLUTE BAY, Nunavut - As Nicole Williamson walked away from the fiery rubble of the plane that crashed into an Arctic hillside, she heard someone crying. The woman found seven-year-old Gabrielle Pelky sitting on a rock with a broken leg. “She scooped her up in her arms and got to a better place... moved her to a place where she felt she was safer,” said RCMP

Sgt. Paul Solomon. “It’s amazing they survived such a thing.” Another man also survived the crash that killed 12 people near Resolute Bay on Saturday, but Solomon couldn’t say where rescuers found him. *** GODERICH, Ont. Residents of a town dubbed the prettiest in Canada wandered in shock Monday through streets buried in rubble and mangled trees, some dissolving into tears as they took in the destruction caused by the most powerful tornado to hit Ontario in years. The people of the picturesque Lake Huron community of Goderich seemed paralyzed, not sure what to do next. But as the day went on, they started rolling up their sleeves to help restore some order to the battered town and comfort those still reeling from the storm. “We will repair this town,” vowed Mayor Delbert Shewfelt. INTERNATIONAL JERUSALEM - The Israeli Supreme Court has rejected requests by Palestinian villagers to reroute a section of Israel’s West Bank separation barrier straddling the Jerusalem municipal border. Residents of the Walajeh village say the section, which is under construction, would cut them off from their farmlands, cemetery and a water

source. Israel says the barrier, which at multiple points dips inside the West Bank, is crucial to keep out Palestinian attackers. Palestinians accuse Israel of using the fence to grab West Bank land. Although the court dismissed the request to completely reroute the barrier section, it agreed to adjust its path to let Walajeh villagers reach the spring and cemetery, and promised access points for farmers to work their lands. *** INDIANAPOLIS - A cheerleading coach has died from head injuries she suffered when a stage collapsed at the Indiana State Fair, making her the seventh fatality in the accident. The Marion County coroner’s offi ce says 24-year-old Meagan Toothman died Monday night. Toothman had been scheduled to undergo organ donation surgery Monday afternoon but the statement did not say if the surgery went ahead. The Associated Press left messages with the coroner’s office and police. Strong winds toppled a stage onto a crowd of fans Aug. 13 as they waited for country band Sugarland to perform. Three fans and a security guard died at the scene, while a fourth fan and a stagehand later died of their injuries. Some four dozen people were hurt, many seriously.

What is old?

Apparently, I’m very old for my age. I’ve seen people get worried turning 20, or turning 25 or 40. That’s never bothered me, and it’s never made any sense to me about why people have these preoccupations with age. My older sister seems to finally have come to terms with having a birthday every year. She didn’t like 20, but of course she loved 19. I think she started to accept things when she turned 25. She didn’t seem to look quite so ill at the thought of it. Now I think I recall her saying something along the lines of, “I guess 30 isn’t so bad.” That’s how you know you’re getting old, Kennedy. She’s now 26. I’m comfortable at 24. My youthful counterpart will surely tell you that I am old. In fact she told that right to my face. It sounds like there are those younger than her however, who feel she is old. Oh, the ignorant bliss of youth. I have some fairly active grandparents, who are certainly getting pretty long in the tooth (an expression that they probably know well), but I don’t necessarily consider them old. Age is funny. I have aunts and uncles who are married and have children, which is something old people do, but they still look like they have a good time. Kids bring a new set of responsibilities, but they definitely still are able to have the time to head out to the bar with some friends and have a good time. They even like new pop and hip-hop music, so they’re actually more in tune with today’s music scene than I am. They are in their 40s, but they still find a way to keep it together, so that can’t be old. My parents are in another boat: late 40s and early 50s. They maybe seem older than the aunts and uncles, but they appear to be aging gracefully enough. They’re both still regularly active: my old man is shooting the lowest golf rounds of his life and continues to play goal three times a week throughout the winter. My mom still dances, I think, and is always on the move with her father. With grandfathers both in their 70s, you might think there was someone in my family I find old. You would be wrong. One works voraciously in his barn on cars and gadgets, and the other walks for an hour every day, plays in a band and still loves double ryes when we play cards. Maybe I’m just lucky to have such a youthful family that they’ve warped my idea of what being old is. My grandfather always says getting older is better than the alternative, which isn’t really the most optimistic way to look at it, but OK, I agree with him.

I’m going to take the politically correct route and say that age is a personal thing, and that one isn’t old until one feels old. With that in mind, I’m currently feeling that 20 is really old. Generally, I love my birthday. I usually tell people several weeks in advance and try to spread the festive birthday spirit. This year — this disgusting milestone year — is terrifying. I’m preparing to take almost any evasive measure to avoid turning 20. My current scheme is to leave the country, (I’ll be visiting friends in St. Charles, Missouri that weekend) and pretend to turn 21 while in the States. Upon returning to Canada, I will still only be 19, having never acknowledged my 20th birthday, thus avoiding my two-decade crisis. I’ll also probably take my birthday off Facebook for a while, because everyone knows that if it doesn’t happen on Facebook, it isn’t real life. Realistically, 20 isn’t going to be any different than 19. It won’t come with a lot more responsibility. I won’t suddenly be out in the world, fending for myself in a battle against the elements. I’ll just be a year older, still in university, still wildly irresponsible. I don’t feel old, and I won’t start behaving like a 45-year-old woman just because I’m not a teen anymore. But it definitely feels like an ending of a point in my life, and I feel pretty righteous in sulking about it. There are plenty of adult examples in my life who have never let age slow them down. My maternal greatgrandma still lives alone, mows her own lawn and plants a garden, and she’s well into her 90s. My Grandpa Tom still enjoys a couple of drinks when playing cards, and a whip around the lake on the snow machines during winter and he’s, well, he’s older than 20. I think we all stigmatize some age in our lives, or maybe more than one. For me, right now my problem is 20. Another common old age is 40. And in perspective, 40 still seems young when compared with 70, 80 and 90. It’s just the sadness of losing the ties associated with being 19, or being 39. I’m feeling old because, though my responsibilities aren’t going to change right away, I’m one step closer to adulthood and all that it entails. That makes me feel old, considering I can clearly remember doing crafts at the Rusty Duce playpark as a child, going to kindergarten and my first day of Grade 9. These aren’t the memories of an old person, but on October 8, they’re sure going to feel like they are.

The day I met Jack Layton As a university student, I skipped class to see Jean Chrétien make a campaign stop in Saskatoon. I got relatively close, close enough that when I hopped up on a rail to get a better view, a Mountie did a double take of my sudden movement. Chr étien made his talking points and was hustled off. Several years later, I had a chance to see Stockwell Day speak in North Battleford. The local MP was a strong backer of the ill-fated Day at the time. I think I even got a chance to interview him for a minute or two, but obviously the experience wasn’t that memorable. So while I saw Chré-

DITCH THE WORKOUT

tien, and spoke to Day, I met Jack Layton. The event was the 2005 annual convention of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association in Banff. I was there because I was nominated for “best agricultural story” for a piece I had done on the impact of the BSE crisis on farmers, for which I would take second place. It was before one of the convention workshops that I ran into Layton in the mezzanine area. He had been scheduled to speak, and thus was killing a few minutes before going in. As luck would have it, in a building filled with reporters, I was able to have a couple of minutes with the NDP leader to myself. Want to get Àt and have fun? Come try ZUMBA! This Latin-inspired dance Àtness workout is for all ages, all Àtness levels.

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile Again, I can’t remember what the discussion was about. I’m sure it was about some nowforgettable issue of the day, perhaps defence. Maybe it was gun control. But what I was left with was impressions. This was a man who was not a featherweight, figuratively or literally. He struck me as tall, with some bulk to him. Perhaps why the national media, who knew him much better, was so astonished at his diminished appearance at a news conference a month ago, when he announced he was temporarily stepping aside. He had a presence as well. The room was fuller with him than without him, if that makes any sense. Our brief discussion didn’t go very far. He soon

had to go in to deliver his speech. I wanted to make my discussion points, and felt smug in my so doing. He countered them, realizing quickly he wasn’t going to make me one of the converted. Plus he wanted a quick bite from the snack table. What was quite clear that day was this man’s charisma. It oozed from his pores as a palpable thing, almost like sweat on one’s brow. It was easy

to see why those who followed him could become so enamoured. I’ve met many politicians over the years, but few, with the possible exception of Brad Wall, have had that level of charisma. The speech went over well. It was about leadership, I believe, and newspapers’ roles in it. A few moments later, and he was gone. Having died just a few months after an astonishing electoral success, Layton leaves the nation feeling in a way unfulfilled. I’m sure there will be some comparisons to the loss of John F. Kennedy, dead before his completed destiny was fulfilled. Certainly we have seen such an elevation in the media in its coverage

of Layton’s passing. “If only ...” will forever be part of the Layton legacy. Personally, I think his biggest accomplishment was not so much bringing 103 NDP members of Parliament to Ottawa as it was the sheer and utter destruction of the Bloc Quebecois in the most recent election. If the whuppin’ he laid on the Bloc can survive his passing, the nation will be the much stronger for it. I’m sure Layton would have preferred a national daycare or pharmacare program as a legacy, but this will nonetheless be long remembered. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. The Estevan Mermaids are hosting a clinic Aug. 27. File photo.

So you think you can swim, Estevan? The Estevan Mermaids will be hosting a “So you think you can swim?” clinic for young people looking to have fun and try out synchronized swimming. The clinic, which is being held Aug. 27 at the leisure centre, begins at 1 p.m. and is open to all ages. The clinic will act as a jump-starter for the synchro program, and give young people in the community a chance to check out the sport. “We did one two years

ago and it was really a lot of fun,” said Brenda Lyons, the head coach of the Mermaids. “It’s fun to get all the kids back out in the water.” Lyons explained that the head coach of the Saskatchewan synchronized swimming team from the last Winter Games will be attending to run the clinic, and will be aided by local coaches and older swimmers. As part of the clinic, swimmers will be turning

run tumbles and rolls in the water into water dance routines. The end of the day will feature a miniperformance for parent spectators. Anyone who is interested in signing up for “So you think you can swim?” is asked to contact Lyons at 634-2584, or by e-mail at estevanmermaids@yahoo. ca by Aug. 26. Also, to go along with Saturday’s clinic, the club will also be holding registration from 6-8 p.m.

Riderville has become JOIN AIR CADETS! OPEN HOUSE “woeville in 2011 September 6 at 6:45 pm In Saskatchewan, success is not determined by a healthy economy, strong families or a bumper crop. In Saskatchewan, from Welwyn to Gravelbourg to Spiritwood to Gull Lake, the only thing that determines whether it’s a good year or a bad one is whether the Green and White, the beloved Roughriders, are winning. This year ... ouch. The watermelon lids worn by the fans are dripping like tears because the Grey Cup is but a pipe dream as the 2011 season approaches its midway mark. Heck, a playoff berth is far off in the distance as Saskatchewan has managed only one win in its first eight games. For a team that has had .500 or better records every year since 2003, the 1-7 record through eight games hasn’t cost them attendance-wise, since every game in Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field is SRO, but it did cost rookie coach Greg Marshall and his offensive co-ordinator, Doug Berry, their jobs after a six-point loss to Toronto. Wrote columnist Rob Vanstone of the Regina Leader-Post, with a clever choice of words: “With the foundation for success in cinders, the Saskatchewan Roughriders needed a “fire Marshall.’ The old coach, Ken Miller, who moved upstairs after last year, is now the new coach. And he has his hands full right off the bat. The demoralized Riders must take on the hottest team in the Canadian Football League, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, in back-to-back games the Labour Day Classic in Regina Sept. 4 and then the Banjo Bowl in Winnipeg the next weekend.

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist Two wins over the Bombers would make Miller more popular in the Wheat Province than the Pil brewmaster and would put the Riders right back into the playoff picture. Two losses, however, and even a tiny dose of Rider Pride will be hard to muster for even the most diehard Saskatchewan fans. The back-to-back games with the Bombers will tell the tale of the 2011 season for the Riders. If they win them both, it will be fairly obvious the 1-7 fault was all Marshall’s. If they lose them both under Miller, well, a total crop failure probably wouldn’t be as discomforting. • Comedy writer Jim Barach: “Major League Baseball has made its postseason schedule and has eliminated all the off days. Greg Marshall’s tenure as head coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders lasted a mere and unremarkable eight games. Less than 24 hours after a 24-18 loss to the Argonauts in Toronto last Thursday – which dropped his club to a CFL-worst 1-7 – Roughrider general manager Brendan Taman informed Marshall his contract was being terminated along with that of offensive co-ordinator Doug Berry. Taking over both roles is Ken Miller, the team’s vice-president of football operations, who coached the team the

Rod Pedersen Rider Insider past three years. Reaction across the country was swift and immediate. Those who supported Marshall, and there are many, felt he simply was the scapegoat for a litany of bad personnel moves over the past six months which cut the heart out of the back-to-back West Division champions. Others felt Marshall didn’t live up to the advance hype and in the short span of two months, completely lost the locker room and was tuned out by his players. Either way, who in the world would have predicted this at Marshall’s introductory news conference in January when it was handshakes and smiles all around? It seemed like such a perfect fit and Marshall looked so at home in green and white with a whistle around his neck. But what has occurred between then and now has been nothing short of a train wreck, and while Marshall felt he deserved more time, the Riders’ brain trust felt a move had to be made now before it’s too late. “We ... I ... really, all of us, became more and more alarmed at the lack of performance of our

team on the field,” Ken Miller said when making the announcement. “And after eight games, we just weren’t playing consistently well. We all know this organization is extremely committed to winning, and winning right now.” With the team on a bye week, there were few players around to discuss the move. However this much is known; there was growing hostility within the locker room regarding Marshall’s approach. He wasn’t afraid to call out players in the media after games and reportedly didn’t hold back in the locker room either. Is it wrong? Not necessarily, but these players weren’t used to it and it was becoming clear they weren’t going to play for him. You could see it on the field; they were getting worse instead of better. I expected Marshall to say at his news conference that at 1-7, anything can happen and although he didn’t agree with the move, he accepts it. However in his statement he said nothing of the like, and his emotions got the best of him when he took a swipe at management upon his exit. “I would like to thank those in the organization

who showed the confidence in me to give me this opportunity,” Marshall said humbly. “However I express my disappointment in how easily you chose to give up on me before I had an opportunity to complete the task you hired me to do. “I understand that in this business the powers that be have the right to make any decision they choose even if it means taking the easy way out and not the right way.” S o n o w i t ’s o n wards and upwards. The Roughriders won’t play again until the Labour Day Classic when they host the league-best Winnipeg Blue Bombers. What a spectacle that’s going to be! Worst against fi rst, the master (Ken Miller) against the pupil (Paul LaPolice), Swaggerville versus the Rider Nation. The Rider players got what they wanted so it’s put-up or shut-up time. But with Miller’s patented inspiration, the team appears to be back on track. “We have 10 games remaining in this season,” Miller said stoically. “Ten games to win football games and go into the playoffs and play strong football. Our goal first of all is to get into the playoffs, hopefully host a playoff game, play really well, get on a roll and hopefully win a Grey Cup.” There’s something about the way he says it that makes you believe it. (Rod Pedersen is voice of the Riders on 620 CKRM)

Composting tips Q: I really enjoy your column, it’s informative and helpful. We have many trees on our property, and leaves are a constant cleaning chore. We place the leaves in a barrel and let them de-

compose. When they’ve broken down, we use that compost in our flower beds and special gardens, like our volcano mountain waterfall garden. In the decomposing barrel, we add a little lime to sweeten the soil. The best way to

Estevan

Mercury www.estevanmercury.ca

A: Good advice. Creating a compost heap is a very budget-friendly way to keep garden plants flourishing. If you have a well-treed property and aren’t taking advantage of all the free leaves, I highly recommend doing so. There are a number of composting methods, from creating a simple heap in a corner of the yard to purchasing a rotating composting system (usually a heavy-duty barrel on a stand that allows you to rotate the barrel easily to turn the compost). It’s up to you how you want to compost. Leaves can be a very rich source of minerals that when broken down do a great job of building up the soil for decorative plants as well as vegetable gardens. Adding lime to compost is a topic of some debate. Lime typically slows down decomposition, and it reduces the acidity of the compost. So it’s a good idea to know why and when lime needs to be added. If, for example, your compost

is largely made up of oak leaves, pine needles or fruit pulp, adding a small amount of lime (about 1 cup for every 25 cubic feet of compost) can balance out the pH of the compost by lowering the acidity. To speed decomposition and ensure even breakdown, turn your compost every three weeks. Shredding the leaves before adding them to the pile will also help the compost develop faster. This is where a mulching attachment on the lawnmower comes in handy. If it’s too much trouble, however, just chuck the leaves onto the pile and remember to turn regularly. HOME TIP: Leaf pile not composting? Add some manure (one part for every five parts of leaves), bone meal or other nitrogen-rich supplement to kick-start decomposition. DeLaet looks for medical exemption in 2012 PROVINCIAL This was supposed to be Graham DeLaet’s time to shine. With an impressive rookie season on the PGA Tour under his belt and a wide open landscape in Canadian golf, the 29-yearold from Weyburn, Sask., seemed poised to step to the forefront of the sport in this country. Instead, his 2011 season never even got off the ground. DeLaet had back surgery the first week of January and appears likely to finish the year having only played a handful of tournaments. “When I’m feeling 100 per cent, I’m going to (return),” DeLaet said Monday in an interview. “I’m not going to do it any sooner than that.” *** REGINA - Eight

games wasn’t enough for Greg Marshall. One day after being fired as the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ head coach, Marshall said Saturday he was disappointed he wasn’t given the chance to turn around a dismal start to the season. “I thought that if there were some bumps along the way that time would be given to fix what needed to be fixed,” he said. Marshall’s first headcoaching job ended on the heels of Thursday’s 24-18 loss to the Toronto Argonauts, dropping Saskatchewan to a league-worst 1-7 record. He was replaced by Ken Miller, who previously led the team to two straight Grey Cup appearances before becoming vice-president of football operations in the off-

season. NATIONAL W I L L I A M S P O RT, Pa. - Canada is moving on to the next round at the Little League World Series after upsetting nemesis Taiwan in a must-win game. Yi-An Pan pitched five innings and added a home run Monday in a 5-3 victory for the team from Langley, B.C. It’s the first time Canada has beaten a team from Taiwan at the tournament in 17 tries. “Less mistakes today,” said Canadian coach Jason Andrews. “We’ve got two wins so far this tournament, for a Canadian team, that’s the most we’ve had in a while. *** With a little over three weeks to go before the Pittsburgh Penguins are

scheduled to open training camp, Sidney Crosby’s status remains as uncertain as ever. Amid speculation the Penguins captain has suffered a setback in his recovery from post-concussion syndrome, Crosby’s agent released a statement Monday to pour cold water on media reports. “Sidney hasn’t been shut down by anyone,” said agent Pat Brisson of CAA Sports. “He has simply adjusted his summer program accordingly to the different needs (required) for appropriate recovery.” Brisson indicated that Crosby will address the media at an “appropriate time” to provide an update on his condition. INTERNATIONAL SAN FRANCISCO - Mayor Ed Lee said Mon-

day he was horrified as he watched violent fan confrontations at a weekend NFL pre-season football game between the archrival 49ers and Oakland Raiders. Lee attended Saturday’s game at Candlestick Park in San Francisco with Oakland Mayor Jean Quan, and both witnessed the brawling firsthand as spectators. “They were just constantly wailing at each other without regard to who was there,” Lee said of the fans. “This is a family outing, for residents and visitors and people who want to see the game, not for people to look for people they don’t like, then saying bad words, then getting into it.” Lee said he is working with police and the 49ers on security issues and to review footage of the fights

and help identify people involved. A meeting was planned later Monday. *** WEST LINN, Ore. - A man who went to the Oregon home of Memphis Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph to sell marijuana said he was beaten with a pool cue in a dispute over the price of pot. The man told sheriff’s deputies at least three men assaulted him but Randolph was not among them. No arrests have been made, and authorities said none were expected on Monday. Police identified the victim as 26-year-old James Beasley of Portland. Officers served a search warrant early Sunday. They spoke with 10 people in the home at the time and recovered pool cues and blood evidence. They did not find drugs in the home.

Read a book from your own childhood to your kids. You might be surprised to discover that you share a love for the very same books. 5. Read a book with a story set in the country of your ancestors. 6. At the dinner table, read a joke from a joke book, then make up your own or tell your favorite. 7. Read a story and substitute your child’s name for one of the main character’s. 8. Carry books wherever you go and into fall. The

Loud Snoring Can Signal Sleep Apnea DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have sleep apnea. Before being treated by a sleep specialist, I was very sleepy during the day and had no energy. My specialist prescribed a mask that pumps air into my nose. It helps somewhat. Later a friend told me about Provigil. It makes me feel much better, but I am not 100 percent. What else could help me? -- J.K. ANSWER: “Apnea” is Greek for “no breathing.” Sleep apnea is periods during sleep when a person stops breathing for 10 or more seconds. There can be five to 30 or more such spells every hour. Quite often, an apneic period is preceded by snoring that gets progressively louder and louder. At the end of the no-breathing episode, the person grunts and half-wakens and then starts breathing again. This fragments sleep and leaves the person sleepy and without energy the next day. The problem lies in a narrowed passageway for air as it travels through the throat en route to the lungs. Redundant throat tissue blocks the natural airflow. Weight loss is one way to get rid of excess throat tissue, if one is overweight. Don’t drink any alcohol from the evening meal on, because it relaxes throat tissue. The mask you wear is called CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). It delivers air under pressure so it can

pass through the obstruction in the throat. Don’t abandon it. You can ask your dentist about fashioning a device that keeps the jaw forward during sleep. That opens the throat too. Stick with your Provigil, since it’s working for you. There are a number of surgical procedures that can pare excess tissue from the back of the throat. And there is a new remedy called the Pillar Palatal Implant System. It consists of three small, plastic rods inserted into the back part of the upper palate to keep it propped up. For some, a droopy palate obstructs airflow. Since you’re doing pretty well with the way things are going now, you might not want to upset things with any more treatment. ***

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 68-year-old male in excellent health who exercises regularly, but I have trouble sleeping for more than five or six hours a night. To get the desired seven to eight hours of sleep, I’ve been taking a sleep aid (diphenhydramine), and have not noticed any unpleasant side effects. Are there any long-term problems with taking this sleep aid on a frequent basis? -- S.P. ANSWER: Diphenhydramine is one of the first antihistamines to be marketed. One brand name is Benadryl. Sleepiness is a side effect of most of the early antihistamines. In other words, you take the medicine for its side effect of drowsiness. Millions of people have

August Contract

CRUDE OIL

taken this drug since it was first marketed. You can take it on a regular basis. Why are you convinced that six hours of sleep is insufficient for you? Do you feel tired during the day with only six hours? If you feel fine or if you take a nap during the day, that might be all the sleep you actually need. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

IN MEMORIAM

MAUREEN EDNA PERKINS March 19, 1943 - August 24, 2005 Remembering you is easy, we do it every day. But missing you is a heart ache that never goes away. We think of you in silence, no eyes can see us weep. And many silent tears are shed when others are asleep. Our lives go on without you, but nothing is the same. We have to hide the heart ache when someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent are the tears that fall, Living our lives without you Is the hardest part of all. - Sadly missed, but always loved and remembed. OBITUARIES Anton (Tony) Deren

June 7, 1925 - July 24, 2011 Tony Deren, formerly of Lampman, Sask., passed away in Estevan, Sask. on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at the age of 86 years. Tony was predeceased by his son, Donald; his parents, Andrew and Emelia Deren; and in-laws, Emmanuel and Marion Resler. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Rosemary; his daughters, Carolyn (Ramiro) Tercero, Susan (Ron) Fichter and his daughter-in-law Karen Deren. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jason (Jen), Kevin (Tracy), Lisa (Wade), Ryan (Karrie), Tanya, Dana (Scott), Trevor (Christina); greatgrandchildren Keisha, Brady, Kylan, Tierra, Chase, Kadence, Ryder, Anna, Ethan, Braden and Karissa; his brother, Michael (Georgina) Deren and special nephew, Greg (Evelyn) Resler; one brother-in-law, four sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. Tony was born in Lampman on June 7, 1925. He started working on the farm when he was 16 years old and farmed until 2010. Tony was very active in the Lampman community, was a Justice of the Peace from 1948 to 1976, then became a Notary Public. He served on the boards of the Lampman Coop, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, Lampman Curling Rink, the Lampman Union Hospital, was a councillor for the R.M. without missing one meeting and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. His greatest achievement was his family, of whom he was very proud and loved to have them all together for any occasion. We will always remember him as being a kind, honest man who would help anyone, no questions asked nor reward needed. He leaves a great void in our lives but we are so thankful for having such a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be greatly missed but we will cherish all the wonderful memories! “We love you.” Prayers were held on Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. and Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. by Rev. Thomas Mutavanathu. Both services were held in Our Lady of Seven Sorrows R.C. Church, Lampman. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Those so wishing may make donations to Estevan Palliative Care, Box 5000-200, 1174 Nicholson Road, Estevan, SK, S4A 2V6, Regina Palliative Care Inc., 4F - 4101 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, SK, S4T 1A5 or a charity of choice in Tony’s memory. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Hall Funeral Services, Estevan.

Thank You We wish to thank all the family and friends who visited (with special thanks to Lisa and Tanya), sent cards, flowers and food, especially Kevin and Tracy and Trevor and Christina for the meals, Ryan and Karrie for the special DVD of Tony’s life (a wonderful keepsake for our family); the nurses at the Regina General on Unit 6 and the Cardiac Care Unit, Drs. McArville, Garbe and Omesgho. A very special thanks to Dustin Hall and staff of Hall Funeral Services, you made a difficult time a little easier; the pallbearers, ushers, Tanya and Lisa for the readings, Dana for reading the eulogy and Keisha for lighting the candle, Laurie, Shelley and Dustin for the music and for doing an amazing job of our tribute songs, Fr. Thomas Mutavanattu and Sr. Jacqueline Lussier for the service.
