The registration just hasn’t been there for the City of Estevan’s summer sports camps. Five of eight camps scheduled to run this summer have had to be cancelled because of a lack of participants. The cheerleading camp, which was held at the beginning of July, has been the only camp to take place so far this summer a BMX camp was held this week and a golf camp is planned to take place next week. “We won’t be cancelling those ones. Lots of different reasons I’m sure.” The BMX camp was up first, and was held Aug. 10 to 12 at the Estevan skatepark. The golf camp is being held Aug. 16 to 18 at Pleasantdale school. “Amanda (Minchin) has been teaching camps
(at Pleasantdale) all summer, and she said it’s a really good spot.” Looking to the future, Stelnicki isn’t sure why registration was so low this year, but insisted that the City will continue with the program. “We will keep our sports camp program. We’re going to try and introduce some different and new sports. Maybe people aren’t liking the sports we’re offering. We’d love suggestions on sports that they’re interested in doing, and
we’ll try and incorporate them next year,” she said. “Things are just different this year.” However, the Estevan playparks have remained as successful as ever. The parks hosted their movie night Aug. 4 at the Kinsmen Hillside playpark. “It was super successful. We had over 100 people attend. It was really awesome.” The next big event for the Estevan playparks is the Under the Sea Carnival being held at Churchill playpark Aug. 26. One-on-one with Sheila Guenther Sheila Guenther is the president of United Way of Estevan. What’s up next for the United Way in Estevan? Well our annual telethon is coming up in October. We’re looking forward to that and hoping to raise some funds for our member agencies. What is the purpose of the Day of Caring? The purpose of our Day of Caring is to get people involved in helping in the community where it’s needed. We were very happy with the results of it. We helped quite a few different individuals and agencies and had a lot of volunteers out to do that. Where were you helping out? We were helping at some individuals’ homes, as well as the nursing home, Diversified Services and a few other places. How did the Day of Caring get started? This was our fourth year. It is an initiative that many United Ways are doing across the country. It’s just a way to get involved in the community and do what we can. The United Ways are getting more involved in their communities in ways other than just fundraising, and that was a way for us to get started and doing that. We do have a few other projects coming up, where we’re going to be more involved, not just as a funder, but we’re going to be more actively involved in areas where we feel it’s needed. We’re going to be making a couple of announcements in either late August or early September on some upcoming programs that we’re going to be working with, and we’re quite excited about it. How does the United Way select groups/programs/institutions to get involved with? What we do is take applications and review them and try to determine what’s needed most in the community. Of course, the most important thing with the United Way is we work with agencies that provide local services, so we’re right in the area. How has the United Way been involved with Creighton Lodge? With Creighton Lodge, they requested some funding from us when they had the changeover with ownership. They just wanted some help with some capital expenditures that were long overdue.
So we’ve been able to help them out with that. How is the United Way involved with Estevan Area Literacy Group? Estevan Area Literacy Group is one of our member agencies, and they work with newcomers to the area that may not speak English very well, and they’re helping them cope with a change in communications, and they do some other programs too, and we’re happy to support them. How can people get involved with the United Way Telethon? They can get involved by volunteering. Obviously by donating. We’re hoping to have more corporations and companies get their staff involved with employee campaigns because all the money we raise does stay in the area, so they can get involved those ways. What are you looking for in regards to stage performers? We’re always looking for anybody that’s interested
since then I’ve become a director and now the president. Do you enjoy your position and work with United Way? Absolutely, it’s a great group, a great board for directors. We have an executive director as well who’s helping us out with dayto-day activities. We really look forward to the telethon and we’re all really actively involved in helping out with our community. Do you work with the United Way on a national level? No, we’re involved just at the local level. Of course (local United Ways) communicate with the national level and follow their policies and guidelines and incentives. We’re involved in that way and we’re all very much independent and involved in our communities.

We all drive with a big blind spot Driving is something many of us do daily. To and from work, to the store, going out somewhere, it doesn’t matter where. Wherever it is most, people drive to it. But how many of us are bad drivers? There are a few things I’ve noticed on roadways; one is that everybody thinks they are a good driver. If anything dangerous happens on a highway it is always the other driver’s fault. Second, driving is to travel what the Internet is to conversation: the anonymity of being inside a car and only interacting with other vehicles for a brief moment before being gone leads to incredible disrespect. I haven’t yet experienced road rage manifest itself within me yet. I’m pretty calm when it comes to driving, and getting angry about something probably impairs one’s judgement behind the wheel as much as alcohol. I have seen it in others and it’s kind of a funny thing. People just believe they can do no wrong when planted firmly in a driver’s seat, and when that’s the mindset, people get angry. They become completely blind to what they are doing and so bothered by what others have done. Anything that goes wrong, every close call, is because the other guy wasn’t paying attention, not because I was toying with the radio.
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers Though I thought I was done with these forever, I recently took a fake driving exam on The Globe and Mail’s website to see what I knew. I thought I’d take it to prove to myself what I already know: I’m the best damn driver in the world. There were 25 multiple choice questions, where a score of less than 21 was a fail. I scored 20, beating only 20 per cent of the other people who took the test that day before me. Something must be very wrong. I still feel confident that rest of the world is safe with me on the roads. I did learn some things though, from my wrong answers, that may make me a safer driver. Did you know that passengers can’t watch a television screen while a vehicle is in motion? Every minivan in mass production since 2005 has been released with a DVD player that flips down for everybody in the back seat to watch. It turns out those can only legally be used while the vehicle is parked in the garage
or for the 60 seconds the van is stopped at a traffic light. I’m not sure if knowing this will make me a safer driver, but I will mark down the licence plate of every minivan committing the heinous crime of occupying children so they don’t bother the driver. I will no longer be tolerant of that. I also found that it’s perfectly OK to slam on the brakes for no good reason. That doesn’t even mean no good reason as in, I wanted to see what that funny sign said before I drove past. That rule means if driving down a freeway and somebody is behind you, slamming on your brakes is a completely acceptable driving maneuver. After doing so, I assume you have to continue on your way because surely there’s a law preventing someone from parking in a lane on the Trans-Canada. One thing I did know was how to handle myself in the dreaded traffic circle or roundabout. We don’t have a lot of these in Canada but apparently I would do just fine in them. I answered correctly that drivers must yield right of way to the vehicles to their left. Only 45 per cent got that one right. To make roads safer we all should take a humbling fake driver exam, just to prove to ourselves that we aren’t necessarily the image of perfection that we see in the rearview mirror.
Is global climate change behind weather problems? Climate change is one of those topics which has seemed to cool, at least in terms of grabbing media headlines. Such is the nature of this business. Media jumps from one hot topic to another in response to the short collective attention span of newspaper readers and television viewers. In a world growing up on music videos, video games and the quick blurbs of social media on the Internet, a story, even one potentially as world altering as climate change, can’t hold the headlines for long. However, in Saskatchewan the question about what global climate change may ultimately bring must be on the minds of many of us in light of what we have faced the last couple of years. Flooding of Highway 1 in the summer of 2010, torrential rains leaving Yorkton flooded in what was termed a one-in-100 year storm last July 1 and now snowplows cleaning hail from highways near Regina this August all seem to herald climate change of some kind. Of course when it comes to climate change one of the problems is that it is something of a new science, and forecasts of what may occur seem to vary widely based on what model one

The result is differing visions of how severe the change may be, and in particular what the effects may be on a given geographical area. If you were to speculate based on the last couple of years, and as climate change will be more gradual than that the last two or three years are not likely typical of the future, you might assume hotter summers and more severe weather occurrences. In terms of temperature warmer appears to be in our future. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has come out and said temperatures over land will rise more than over water, a not so surprising expectation since the water is likely to have a cooling effect. If correct that would mean Canada, Si-
beria and Alaska would experience the largest percentage increase in temperature as a result of global climate change. That will change agriculture in Canada but hardly ruin it. If we have hotter summers crops such as corn and soybeans are likely to be more viable and those have been the moneymakers for American farmers for years. At the recent Canola Council of Canada annual convention held in Saskatoon Robert Thompson, senior fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs said there will also likely be higher levels of precipitation during winter and summer in Canada, Siberia and Alaska. The potential of more heat, and more moisture is not a bad thing in terms of farming, if the severity factor is limited moving forward. The world is going to face some challenges, perhaps even severe ones, as climates change into the future, but in terms of farmers on the Canadian Prairies, it should be change they can adapt to and remain productive through. And that will be critical because a productive area such as the Canadian Prairies will be critical if the world is to have a chance to feed itself in the decades ahead.

Welcome back, Jersday I know that this is a week late, but I figured that where Jersey Shore is involved, late is better than never. So season four is underway, and the cast is in Italy. And when I say cast, I feel like I’m actually talking about paid actors. The Jersey Shore kids aren’t kids anymore, and their interactions seem a lot more contrived and rehearsed than they did in the first season. They’re wearing clothing from their own Jersey Laundry brand. They’ve raked in a ton of cash through endorsement deals and autobiographies. They have their own perfume and jewelry lines. They’ve been featured on every talk show out there. DJ Pauly D is currently touring with Britney Spears. They’re kind of famous now. It’s pretty obvious that the fame has gone to their heads. Check out Nicole “Snooki” and Jenny “JWOWW.” Both have lost a ton of weight and are more focused on their appearances than they were in previous seasons. Which is really saying something, since a modest and non-image-focused Jersey Shore cast member has never existed. But it’s clear that these two girls in particular are feeling the
then promptly sign up to shoot season five. Thank goodness we have the Vinny/Pauly bromance to hold the s h o w t o g e t h e r. Without their constant jokes and laid-back takes on the drama going on in the house, the show would grind to a painful halt rather than clicking along dysfunctionally. They’re the comic relief and I think their Jersey Shore castmates owe them a big “thank you” for keeping everyone sane and living together, and so guaranteeing them all their nice, fat paycheques. It’s going to be an interesting season. Even haters of the show have to admit that there’s something that draws us to watch. You can put it down all you want and condemn it for being trash, but you’re still talking about it, and that’s just more money in their bronzer-stained pockets.

Maybe It’s Just Me strain of fame. Then there’s Mike “The Situation,” who has always been of questionable moral standing but seems messed up on a whole new level this season. From the season preview, it looks like he spends most of his time trying to mess up Snooki’s relationship and to make everyone in the house as miserable as possible without accepting the blame. It was suggested to me that he may be on drugs, and I can see where that’s coming from. While he’s never been very coherent, Mike’s ramblings are more disjointed and confusing than ever. My personal favourite of any season of Jersey Shore is the constant question of whether or not Sammy “Sweetheart” and Ronnie will get back together. My guess is that yes, they will have some period of relationshipness, before breaking up and smashing each other’s things. Lots of crying and heart felt rants to the camera will ensue, until they both agree that they shouldn’t spend more time together,

I’m going to select one living person and one not-so-living person. The first man was killed in 1948: Mohandas Gandhi. Gandhi was such a phenomenal person. He inspired peace in a time of violence between England and India, when India was still under British rule. I would imagine Gandhi exudes a humble aura of greatness and the man has some of the best quotes ever. He would be a journalist’s dream because we love awesome quotes. “An eye for an eye makes the world blind.” That’s one of my favourite quotes, and it’s attributed to the little bald Indian man who wore Harry Potter glasses, long before those glasses were cool. “I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.” This guy is full of wisdom. He is the kind of person who makes the world a better place. If the world was made up just of me, it would probably be about the same place, but if there were six billion Gandhi’s running around, there would be no war. I would say there would be no starvation, but he was well known for his fasting. At least there would be food available, and if one of the Gandhi’s felt like fasting for a few weeks, he could still end that anytime and have lots of good food. The living person I would want to sit down with has gigantic hair and an even bigger voice: Claudio Sanchez. He’s the mastermind behind the band Coheed and Cambria and is one of the most talented individuals in music today. He’s a great guitarist and has one of the most electrifying voices on the planet. I think a friend of mine suggested he was like Jimmy Page and Robert Plant all rolled in to one brilliantly musical person. He also writes some of the most interesting lyrics of the day, as the band’s albums follow a sci-fi/fantasy storyline in a fictional universe of 78 planets called Heaven’s Fence. That sounds nerdy, and it is, but the lyrics rarely just play out as a narration of a story, they deal with the characters’ emotional states. “Decision sits so make it quick/a breath inhaled from an air so sick/I cursed the day that I learned of the web you spun.” The lyrics take a little deciphering, but he also writes a comic book to further illustrate the story. Sanchez is maybe the coolest nerd out there, so a coffee would be great, though I would request he bring his acoustic guitar.

I can’t decide on just one celebrity. It’s too tough, as there are so many that I’d like to meet. How do you pick one person to be the most interesting, most inspiring and most awesome to enjoy coffee with? Impossible. First, I’d like to visit with J. K. Rowling. She’s definitely an inspiration, being (in my opinion) single-handedly responsible for getting kids to read again. She was once a single mom struggling to get by, and now thanks to a little series about some kid named Harry Potter, she’s the world’s richest author, having made over $1 billion. It’s not her success that makes her so exciting, though. It’s the Harry Potter books themselves. As a huge fan of the series, I appreciate the detail she has put into each story, and the cleverly constructed plot that ties them all together. If I could visit with J. K., I’d probably ask her all about coming up with the idea behind Quidditch, the wizard sport. I’d want to know what happens to Harry and Ginny’s kids, and if Lucius Malfoy went to Azkaban following Voldemort’s defeat. So many details that I’d make sure she was contractually obliged to tell me as part of our coffee date. My second person(s) would be Marianas Trench. I know, that’s not one person, and the only reason I’m so fixated on them at the moment is because I’m seeing them in concert this weekend. Fangirl mania has fit, for sure. But their interviews are always funny (trust me, I’ve watched them all this week), they seem very down to earth, and they seem like they’d be able to carry on a conversation among themselves, which would be convenient since I would definitely be dumb-struck and just sit their staring. And probably spill my coffee everywhere. It would sort of be like our ongoing Twitter relationship, in which I read their tweets and laugh to myself, but never say anything in return. Plus that time I e-mailed their manager about doing an interview and never got a reply. Which I wasn’t upset about and didn’t sulk around over for any amount of time. So, in summary: I’d go for coffee with J. K. Rowling because she’s very interesting and inspiring, and Marianas Trench because, uh, well for other reasons.

A massive jeer goes out to the person(s) responsible for smearing fecal matter on the slides at Trojan playpark. What a disgusting and despicable act. A jeer is sent in the direction of those responsible for the vandalism in the neighbourhood near the mall. Senseless, immature acts like this drive me nuts. Jeers to the smokers who throw their cigarette butts out on the sidewalk and street as they enter the Orpheum Theatre. Perhaps they should ask for a cigarette container outside the door of this public place! Jeers to those who choose not to use the new mid-block crosswalks on Fourth Street. Jay walking is pointless when you only have to walk 15 feet to get to a crosswalk.

It’s not rock bottom but close One would think losing to the lastplace team in the CFL and dropping to 1-5 would signal rock bottom for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. However in this columnist’s opinion they’re nowhere near rock bottom, but they can see it from here. The Riders closed the book on the opening third of the 2011 CFL season with a rather stunning 24-11 loss to the previously winless BC Lions in Vancouver. It was stunning because the Roughrider offense, which was picked apart in this space last week, managed a measly 11 points against, statistically, the worst defense in the CFL. Rock bottom? No, not even close, and here’s why: this football club displayed what it’s capable of when they upset the Grey Cup champion Alouettes in Montreal in Week 4. That victory bought the club a little extra time as they continue to figure things out under new head coach Greg Marshall. However, back-to-back losses against divisional opponents is a tragic sign. In B.C. the football club looked disorganized, ill-prepared to adapt to adversity and completely at a loss for

The hole continues to get bigger as they’re already off to their worst start since 2000 and with 4-2 Calgary coming into Mosaic Stadium Friday night, 1-6 doesn’t seem unrealistic. So now you begin to wonder who’s to blame, or who should pay? No one seems able to put their finger on who’s responsible, although the dropped passes, missed tackles and blown assignments make it pretty easy to point the fingers at the players. However, this is a team coming off back-to-back Grey Cup appearances. Their players don’t suck, and they’re simply trying to execute the game plan set out for them. Really it’s up to team President Jim Hopson and V.P. of Football Ken Miller to assess the damage, and then chart the path ahead. Neither one has shown hesitation in the past to make
the necessary changes. “I don’t think you make sacrificial lambs out of anyone,” Hopson reasoned. “If there needs to be a change, then we’ll do it, but I’m not in a position to say that right now because we haven’t sat down as a group to see where we’re going. “We won’t make a change just to appease people. The reality is if you make a change and don’t get better, what’s the next change?” The key right now for this football team is to string a succession of plays together in all three phases and start to re-establish trust in each other. And they need to do it in a hurry because the loyal fanbase is quickly losing faith and letting this club know it. If the players start to believe what they’re hearing and reading about themselves, then they’re sunk. However rest assured that the woeful play has caught the attention of the highest-ranking position on the team. “We understand the seriousness of it,” Hopson declared. “And we’re going to turn it around and get it back on track.” (Rod Pedersen is the voice of the Riders on CKRM Radio)

Jays star finally hits big league Brett Lawrie is the ‘can’t-miss’ kid. Drafted higher than any Canadian in baseball history, the 21-year-old Lawrie has been on fans’ radar for the past three years, when he went 16th overall in the 2008 draft to the Milwaukee Brewers. The Langley, B.C. native, who comes with a reputation as being his own No. 1 fan, became Blue Jays property this past off-season in a deal that sent starting pitcher Shaun Marcum to Wisconsin. Since Marcum was one of the Jays’ mound stars, fans have been anxiously waiting for some payoff. Finally, on Aug. 5, it arrived, with Lawrie being called up from AAA Las Vegas, where he was tearing the cover off the ball. Jays manager John Farrell didn’t beat around the bush about his expectations, announcing that Lawrie would be immediately inserted into the starting lineup at third base, allowing slugger Jose Bautista to move back to the outfield. And what a start! Lawrie banged out two hits in his debut, using his quick bat to drill a couple of singles in four at-bats. No Canadian baseball player has ever come with such high expectations as Lawrie. He was labelled a future superstar at 18 — hence the first-round draft selection by Milwaukee — and has been ripping up the Pacific Coast League while awaiting his Jays’ call-up. “Finally, this is a guy that we’ve had a lot of expectations on,” Farrell told MLB.com reporter Gregor Chisholm. “That’s not to create more of a hysteria situation than the attention that’s going to follow him, but he has done everything we’ve asked at Triple-A.” Everything — and more. Lawrie batted .348 in 17 games since recovering in mid-July from a broken hand. Overall, in 69 games with Las Vegas, he batted .353 with 18 homers and 61 runs-batted-in. Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos has Toronto fans deservedly excited about the future. The team is young, with strong pitching, and the best slugger in baseball in Bautista contractually locked up for the next five years. Lawrie, Bautista and Adam Lind may give the

investment banks all got into serious trouble in September, just a couple of weeks after we signed up for the second mortgage - the one that not only paid for the new house, but also paid off all our existing debt reducing us to just one payment a month. By the time the house listed in November 2008, the world was falling into the depths of a recession, one many called the worst since the Dirty Thirties. Several people looked at the North Battleford house, but no offers. Not even a nibble. Weekly calls to the realtor were depressing to say the least. We didn’t get an offer until April 2009, nearly six months after we listed, and eight months after the initial purchase. Eight months with two mortgages, something my father-in-law desperately warned us not to take on. By this time, the price of oil was down to the $38/barrel range. Talking to the Estevan realtor, our new house had lost $50,000 in value by that date. We only got one offer, and it was $40,000 below our initial list price (which was reduced several times.) There was no negotiation on price. We jumped at it, despite being $60,000 less than what the neighbours had sold their nearly identical house for 18 months prior. Between the inflated price of the new home, the loss in value of the old home, and the cost of sustaining two mortgages, I reckon we were out over $100,000. Some people told me, “Oh, you don’t see that until you sell your house.” To that, I say bovine feces. We see it every day, in the much higher mortgage payment due to the lower equity we took with us, and the higher price we paid. Our mortgage, which had been down to 14 years, got pushed to 30 years. We were making payments that were at least half principle by that point. Now, a year’s payments barely scratched the surface of the principle. Over time, the value of the Estevan house has recuperated, and likely healthily exceeded the price we paid. But we will not capitalize on that any time soon, because we couldn’t afford to move if we wanted to. And we would still have to buy another, even more expensive, home. There is a very real cost to the tomfoolery in the markets. We will be paying that cost for an additional 16 years. Don’t let it happen to you. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. Provincial health workers approve new contract Provincial REGINA - Health workers in Saskatchewan have ratified a contract deal reached last month with their employers. The Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan says 87 per cent of those who voted supported the retroactive agreement. President Cathy Dickson says many members have already indicated they want improvements when the contract expires in 2013. The deal with the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations provides a general wage increase of 7.5 per cent over four years, plus additional market-based raises. More than 3,000 hospital pharmacists, physical therapists and other specialized health professionals
had been without a contract for more than two years. to Nyad’s blog, posted on Twitter: “It’s over.” Lafferty said “the combination of factors was too much to safely continue.” According to the Twitter feed, Nyad was pulled from the water early in the morning after swimming for 29 hours. The swim was expected to take 60 hours to cover at least 103 miles (166 kilometres).

Summer Fruit Ice Cream Pie What a great way to savor the special fruits of summer. Stir this pie up before those juicy jewels are nothing more than a pleasant memory. Everyone invited to share this spectacular summer dessert will be glad you did! 1 (4-serving) package sugar-free vanilla cook-andserve pudding mix 2/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder 1 cup water 1 (8-ounce) package fatfree cream cheese 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 (6-ounce) purchased graham cracker pie crust 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries 3/4 cup fresh blueberries
1. In a medium saucepan, combine dry pudding mix, dry milk powder and water. Cook over medium heat until mixture thickens and starts to boil, stirring often. Remove from heat. Blend in cream cheese and vanilla extract, using a wire whisk. Spread mixture into pie crust. Refrigerate at least 3 hours. 2. In a medium bowl, combine strawberries, blueberries and sugar substitute. Evenly sprinkle fruit mixture over top of filling. Refrigerate until ready to serve. When serving, top each piece with 1 tablespoon whipped topping. The affected area includes the portion of Nicholson Road, north of Wellock Road and Tedford Way. The proposed construction area is shown within the bold line. At different times, Tedford Way will be closed during the construction for the construction of the underground and surface works.
