Michala Brasseur may not be Miss Teen Canada World, but she definitely left the competition having learned something positive. The Estevan teen finished in 11th place in a field of 76 girls from across the country, though she was a bit disappointed to be just shy of the top 10. “We model off our swimsuits and we were judged on that. When we were doing our swimsuits, I went up to the runway and we were supposed to do our turn on the runway, then do a figure eight, but I forgot to do my figure eight, so that cost me the top ten.” The competition, which was held in Toronto last month, featured several main competitions, including swimwear, talent and community service. Michala explained that contestants were ranked in each category, as well as in smaller categories like photogenic appeal and people’s choice. Points were totalled up at the end of the competition, leading the judges to announce the winners. “All the girls that (won a smaller competition) were in the top 20 at least.” For the talent portion of the competition, Mi-

Michala Brasseur chala performed a lyrical dance, choreographed by Lori Gay Drewitz Galloway of Estevan. She placed third, competing against girls who performed mainly monologues, songs and dances. “There was a girl who did River Dancing, like Irish dancing. It was so cool,” she said of another competitor’s performance. Michala also excelled in the congeniality portion of the competition, finishing first-runner up. As the girls were in near-constant contact with one another during the 10-day competition, they were monitored and scored by chaperones. “Everyone was so, so nice, I couldn’t believe it. But when the pageant started — it went preliminaries, talent and pageant — but once those started, the girls started getting a little rude. They started making each other cry, it was getting really bad.” Michala pointed out that she quickly learned just to keep her mouth closed and stay out of conflict, something that clearly served her well. Staying at the hotel with the girls was interesting, since their floor of the hotel was named one of the most haunted places in Canada. “There were girls that were terrified and running through the hallways screaming.” Michala entered the competition with the platform of raising money for cervical cancer research, a topic that hits close to home. Her maternal grandmother passed away from the disease last year, and Michala hoped to spread awareness about immu-
nization and preventative measures. Michala said her dress, which was originally owned by the reigning Miss Universe, got her a lot of attention and even brought some of the judges to tears. The dress, which is the only one of its kind, was purchased from Miss Universe, who had decided not to wear it herself. “It’s kind of a funny story, because when we went there, we were looking through this big book of designs. I’m looking through it and I’m like ‘Oh my gosh, I love that dress.’… So we called (the designer) and he actually doesn’t make them anymore, but he had made one, the white one, for Miss Universe … but she changed her mind, and she’s actually the same size as me, so now I have this new, one-of-a-kind, onlyone-in-the-world dress.” During the competition, the girls were introduced to several celebrities, including Robert Pattinson, who was filming in their hotel, the Fairmont Royal York, and offered the girls a brief hello. “That was so awesome,” said Michala. “I couldn’t believe it.” The stars of the Canadian series Degrassi who were the MCs for the competition were among the other famous people to which the contestants were introduced. Michala said she found the food to be the worst part of the competition. The girls were expected to be at breakfast at 6:00 a.m., and that was their only regularly scheduled meal of the day. “We’d have lunch at,
like, 5:00 p.m., which is usually suppertime, and then we’d have supper at 2:00 a.m.,” she said, pointing out that she and the other competitors were only getting a couple hours of sleep each night. “There were a lot of vegetarians there, so it was a lot of organic stuff,” she said. “They had these little bags of cookies that tasted like cardboard. That was the only thing they had for us to snack on, so of course I was eating like 20 packs a day of these cardboard cookies.” During the competition, Michala was offered a modelling contract by one of the judges. “He really liked my walk, and he really liked everything I did, so he talked to the girl that I bought my dress from and she contacted me.” Michala said she was definitely interested in the opportunity, but that modelling would be a lot of work. “(The Saskatchewan pageant) was called ‘Be your own kind of beautiful,’ and you didn’t really have to worry about your body. But for (Miss Teen Canada World) you did, so I was constantly going to the gym, and I have to keep that up now.” Future pageants may be in store for Michala, who admitted that she enjoys them. “I can enter this pageant again in two years, so I might possibly do that. But it is a lot of money, a lot of fundraising, a lot of work. It does take a lot of time,” she said. Michala is considering competing in the Top Teen of North America pageant, which allows both boys and girls to compete. With this year’s pageant behind her, Michala said she learned that “You just need to focus. Don’t listen to what the other girls are saying, you are there to win, you are there to do your best, and no matter what happens, that’s what you’re there to do. “You can’t get caught in the little drama that happens with the girls. You have to be quiet, but just go along and not get caught in the drama.” If given the opportunity to do that competition over, Michala said she would done her figure eight during the swimsuit competition. “And I would stock up on food,” she said, laughing.
THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, AUGUST 5, 2011
One-on-one with
Kyle Whitehead Kyle Whitehead plays Edna Turnblad in the upcoming performance of “Hairspray” at the Estevan Comprehensive School. Because seating is numbered, those who are interested are encouraged to get their tickets from Pharmasave as soon as possible in order to get the best seats. How’d you get involved with Hairspray? Evanne (Wilhelm) called me up and asked me if I wanted to be a part of it, and I said “Sure.” Why Edna? I like to take parts that are challenging. I don’t think I’ve ever had an easy part. And playing a woman seems to be a fairly challenging part for a dude. How have rehearsals been? Pretty well. We started up our really big ones here on the 25th. Dancing, for a large person like myself is difficult, however we’re getting through it. What’s the best part about your character? I have to say the fact that this very large character is so introverted, and inside, and afraid of the world outside, and by the end of the show she’s really come out of her shell. I’m not as soft spoken as John (Travolta) did his character. I’m a little closer to the Broadway version, which is a little gruffer, a little manlier to make the character, a little funnier. What is your favourite scene in the musical? The one that I laugh at the most that I’m in is the scene between myself
and my husband, onstage (Spencer Warriner). I think he’s 17, so there’s an age and a size difference there. It’s basically talking about how, yeah, we may be getting older, we may not look the same anymore, but really, they still love each other. It’s hard to get through that scene without laughing myself. How have the directors been to work with? The rest of the cast? The directors have been awesome. Evanne and Arlene have been great with the vocal rehearsals and Sharlene with her dancing direction is phenomenal. The cast is all great. I haven’t met anybody on that cast that I don’t like. They’re fun, they’re energetic, they’re great to work with. How have ticket sales been going? I honestly don’t know. I don’t think they’ve gone as well as we would have hoped. We’d like to see a lot more people come out, especially since this is a fundraiser for the flood victims. We’d like to see each show sold out. When is the first show and how can people buy tickets? T h e first show is August 18 and they can buy their tickets at Pharmas a v e . I t ’s numbered seating so go in, pick your spot. The sooner you go in, the better your spot is going to be. Will they be selling tickets
at the door? I’m going to assume they will if they haven’t sold out. What is your background in music/performing? In music, I’ve got my degree in music education through the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota. I’ve been involved in music of sorts since second grade. I was in musicals all through high school and after. I’ve been in shows like Oliver, Beauty and the Beast and Titanic. This is the first time I wasn’t type-cast as something murderous or furry. What has been the most enjoyable part of playing Edna? I think it’s just
the character itself. The lines, the things that she says, and the way she interacts with the other characters. What is your “dream” part in any musical/play/ whatever? I would want to be Mark or Roger from Rent. I love that musical and the songs that they sing, and the fact that it’s a rock opera, not your traditional, fifties style blah. And Hairspray isn’t a fifties style blah either. Any lesson you’ll be taking away from Hairspray? Wo m e n ’s clothing sucks. (Laughs) No, you just really need to push for your role. There’s a lot of work that goes into all of it. You just have to find the best way for you to get it.

The longest joke ever told It’s been 10 years. It was exactly a decade that I’ve been waiting in anticipation for the punch line of this joke. I was 14 years old. My grandpa Bob would have been 64, though he would tell everyone he was only 63 at the time. He’s now 74 but would tell you he’s 73. In 2001 we were travelling by car to Seattle, where my mom’s sister lives with her husband and two children. There is a lot of time to kill on this trip. At some point my Grandpa began telling my sister, 16, and me about his time working between university semesters in northern Ontario. The story involved him and his boss Gus in a diner. Gus would do something to the waitress, he told us. Then he stopped telling the story, saying he couldn’t continue because of our age and untainted innocence. We bugged him. We nagged him the rest of the trip, and continued to nag for the next several years. Our continued inquiries, at times coming a couple of years apart, were always fruitless. Even when I was 20 and she was 22, he shook his head with a grin on his face. We’re too young. We can’t handle the truth. Well last week, when my sister and I were home, sitting on his deck with a
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers couple of drinks, she brought it up again. After pouring himself another glass of wine, he told us. Finally, after 10 years. Here are some of the things that have happened in the time we’ve been waiting to hear the completion of this joke. First, the joke was initiated in a pre9/11 world. Canada’s combat mission in Afghanistan began and ended within that time. The identity of Deep Throat was revealed. There was no Facebook, YouTube or Twitter. Mark Zuckerberg was only 17. There was no iPod; the first one came out in the fall of 2001. Four new countries have been established. The joke started seven years before the Great Recession, which hit the fan in 2008. There have been serious natural disasters in Indonesia, Haiti, Louisiana and
India. Both SARS and H1N1 have become well-known medical terms to the general public in this time. There have been five Olympic Games held. The world record for the 100-metre sprint has gone from 9.79 to 9.58. The first Harry Potter movie hadn’t been released yet. They just released the eighth and final one a couple weeks before we heard the end of the joke. I first heard the joke when the Dead Sea was just sick. I don’t know if it was his master plan to tantalize us for an entire decade as some sort of sick joke of his, to keep us on the edge of our seat for 10 years waiting on this punch line, but he couldn’t pay off 10 years of anticipation. It was funny. It was a “groaner,” as my grandma put it. It was something I’d expect out the mouth of Bob Saget. Unfortunately for the readers, I can’t divulge the punch line in the space provided here due to its graphic, and perhaps inappropriate, nature. Besides, it wouldn’t be fair if I had to wait 10 years and then just blabbed it out loud right here. You’ll have to wait. Hopefully not 10 years though. If you really want to hear the joke, e-mail me at jbaker@estevanmercury.ca.
Gutting of U.S. farm bill could be good for Canada Perhaps the greatest influence on farm commodity prices over the past quarter of a century has not been hungry people, or the impact of Mother Nature, but the meddling in the market of world governments. The two key culprits have been the European Union, a group of countries with memories of war years starvation, large populations and small land bases who use government coffers to keep agricultural food production competitive in places where land values are skewed ridiculously high from non-farm factors, and the United States. The U.S. has used farm subsidies to accomplish two things, achieving both quite effectively. On the one hand the government has used the tools associated with the U.S. Farm Bill to keep farmers financially better off than their counterparts in many other countries relying simply on the market for their returns. And at the same time the federal money has allowed the government to control production numbers to some extent and to buy market share in terms of world trade. The combination has ultimately made the Americans the price setters of more than the usual supply and demand economic factors.
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist In terms of accomplishing set goals, the U.S. Farm Bill might be the most successful thing the American government has developed in years. It is interesting to note the Farm Bill is something American farmers seem to generally want extended for another five years. You couldn’t say the same about any farm program government has created in Canada in decades. Most farmers have begged to see them scuttled, not extended. As successful as the U.S. Farm Bill has been from an American perspective, it has been trade distorting, and that has been a negative for farmers in countries such as Canada. Federal governments here would have been severely challenged to match subsidies given smaller coffers, even had they had the political will to try, something they have not had. Now the Farm Bill may be on its last days. There are economists who are suggest-
ing the trillion dollar deficit in the United States will mean farm programming will be on the chopping block. That would seem to be a legitimate concept to forecast except for two things that may be factors economists have a hard time fathoming. To start with common sense might suggest cuts are a must in the face of a trillion dollar deficit, but that may fail to factor in American arrogance that they are above such things. Seriously, who is going to foreclose on the U.S. government with its tentacles woven through most of the world economy? The expected cuts may be more lip service than reality. And then there is the fact agriculture spending is merely one per cent of the American federal budget. Cut in half, and rare is the instance government cuts programming of anything by 50 per cent would make such a small difference it wouldn’t alter the deficit at all, so it is more likely they look to trim larger chunks of fat, if they are serious about the deficit. Having a gutted Farm Bill would bring the farm commodity markets back under more traditional supply/demand forces, but it may not happen as quickly as some might expect.

Crash diets are stupid, or are they? It’s day two of my crash diet and I’m hungry. Which makes sense, considering I’ve only eaten a cup of peas today and half a bowl of Sacred Heart Soup. And consumed more than a litre of water. I actually got the toaster out this morning out of habit. Clearly I miss my raisin toast and one percent milk. People seem to see crash diets as a God-send, a miracle-working deity that removes all excess weight in a matter of a week. I think we’ve all seen three-day cleanses and week-long fat blasts advertised, promising to make you drop a dress size in no time. It’s like running your picture through the Skinny Me program, except the results are real and less pixelated. This desire to be instantly thin comes from (in my totally expert, nomedical-knowledge-at-all opinion) our societal need for immediacy. We want it now, and those who don’t feel they have the time to exercise regularly (me) and whose moms are constantly baking (me) just want results with minimal effort. So what if I’m dizzy while I try to type this column? I’m going to lose 10 pounds in the next six days! But I figured I’d better research this business and find out what’s up. Typing “How successful are crash diets?” into Google brought up a lot
Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me of hits. I decided to read only the top three results because, you know, they must be right if they’re first. Result one: The title of the article is “The Best Crash Diet for a Healthy You.” Huh. That seems like an oxymoron. Anyway, the site explained that eating cabbage soup is the best way to go if you want to lose those pounds fast, and recommends that one do some yoga to look radiant and thinner. Well, alright. I think I have a yoga DVD at home and cabbage soup is basically what I’m eating. So that’s one point for my crash diet. Result two: Cracked. com presents the six most insane crash diets of all time. The sixth one is consuming only alcohol, which I swear I saw on a mockumentary on YouTube and agree that it’s likely not healthy. Next is vomiting, which apparently started in Rome. Neat. Then we have eating only graham crackers, then chewing your food 80 times until it reached liquid form and, my personal favourite, consuming tapeworms so they can eat your food for you. The number one most insane diet is

“The sleeping beauty diet,” which Cracked describes as voluntarily being sedated for weeks in order to lose weight. Finishing the article, I couldn’t really find a moral, exactly, other than that people are crazy. And that soup seems a whole lot better than tapeworms. So, another point for the soup diet. Result three: Titled “Four Keys That Can Make Crash Dieting Work,” this article explains that crash diets are stupid and largely ineffective, but goes on to explain how to make them awesome. Mentally convince yourself you like being hungry and then get pumped up about all your willpower. Go from crash dieting to real, life-style change dieting. Finally, punish yourself with more soup in the future should you find yourself binging on chocolate covered peanuts. This one was a bit harder to decipher, but as I understand it, crash diets can be good if you use them to get healthier in the long run. So that’s another point for my crash diet, making the total three points for, and zero points against. And Google doesn’t lie, so all this must be true. I’m feeling pretty good about this diet now. Plus, oh my God, I’ve lost three pounds since Monday!

Rider offence goes cold “Calgary didn’t win it. The Riders lost it.” That was a quote from a CIS football coach whom I respect greatly, regarding the Calgary Stampeders’ 22-18 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders Saturday night at a sold out Mosaic Stadium. The notion certainly ran through my mind leaving Canada’s football shrine after the game but I didn’t dare say it for fear of not giving the Stamps their due credit. I hate when teams say that about the Riders. However looking at the stat sheet and scoring summary the thought definitely crossed my mind: “Calgary only had one touchdown? Where the heck did they get all their points?” They got them by virtue of four field goals and as such, the Rider defense should be commended for keeping Calgary out of the end zone for much of the night. Saskatchewan’s special teams were solid as well, as their totals included a 52-yard punt return by rookie Brandon West and a 44.6-yard punting average by Eddie Johnson (including a 64-yarder). So where does the criticism lie after this one? It has to be the offense. A time count violation late in the second quarter cost the Riders a down, a subsequent safety and then three more points against as Calgary nailed a field goal just before the break. A five point swing. A
of the squad. But hang on, hang on. No one is getting fired. There is evidence of improvement in this team albeit incrementally, and Marshall seems satisfied with that. He just isn’t satisfied with the results. “I think we played well the past two weeks but unfortunately we’re 1-1 (in that time),” Marshall said after the game. “We need to play better in certain areas. I like the way they worked and competed and we’ll be better. I know people are frustrated but no more so than us. It’s a long season and I stress that a lot. We can’t panic. I see us getting better.” The opening third of the season will officially close for the Riders Friday night in Vancouver against the 0-5 Lions. The team will be either 2-4 in the opening six games or 1-5 and either record is woefully shy of expectations. And it’s getting kind of late to be saying it’s still early. (Rod Pedersen is the voice of the Riders on CKRM radio)
Rod Pedersen Rider Insider four point loss. A 1-4 record. It’s not clear who’s to blame between quarterback Darian Durant and coordinator Doug Berry but it appears they’re not on the same page as we near the one-third turn of the season. Coach Greg Marshall said he considering calling a timeout at that juncture in the game Saturday but trusted his offense would get the play off in time. His trust was not rewarded. So what does that mean? Is he losing faith in Berry? That’s doubtful but the fans whom are accustomed to better than this are calling for Berry’s firing. The realists say ‘you could fire Berry but who would you replace him with?’. The logic would say Ken Miller, who can’t be pleased while watching this all unfold from his perch as Vice President of Football Operations, and a former offensive coordinator and head coach

Men or women: Who is fit to rule the world?
He She He She Said
The best way to begin tackling this subject should be to decide who currently rules the world. By Jordan Baker It is probably pretty safe to say that the world of both business and politics is still a boys club. One can deduce men are currently ruling the world. Next we have to decide if the world could be a better place. Obviously it can be. But if the genders switched places, would the world be better just by substituting women into the majority of the power roles men currently fill? Firstly, women are just as capable as men to take on the most demanding jobs in the political and economic arenas. There is nothing about a Y chromosome that makes men better at making decisions for a country or a company. It’s possible there would less violence and starvation, because men love violence and hate food. There is however, one area that would be completely overlooked if women ruled. Oh, won’t somebody think of the children? I am an expert on all things anthropological, and women make better caregivers than men do. They are more nurturing. They are more protective. That’s generalizing, and there are women who run countries, and they may also be brilliant mothers. I am not saying that a woman who is an MP, or a CEO is not a good mother. I’m also not saying that a man can’t raise a child. But if tomorrow the sexes just switched roles and women were expected by society to give birth and then continue being the main breadwinner, children would suffer. A child should be raised in the best environment possible. That means different things for every family, and there is no right way to bring an infant into adulthood. I think children would be negatively affected by a society ruled by women, generation by generation would slowly become masculinised by their fathers, and then those girls would be become women, ruling the world by the influence of their patriarchs. Then we’re back to men ruling the world, this time through their daughters, and probably screwing it up back to the way it is anyway. So there, I said it. Men aren’t as good at raising kids.
Women. Hands down. Not to say men are evil or even morally By Tonaya Marr misguided. They just seem to have a rough history of running the world into the ground. One only needs to look briefly over the last hundred years to see examples. One old example: First and Second World Wars. Not a lot of females kicking around there. Pretty much everyone waving a gun around was a man, or was at least a woman pretending to be a man. And how many people died? Somewhere around 100 million. One very recent example: The United States’ increase of their debt ceiling. President Obama is a dude. He leads the country. Not that all leaders of countries in financial trouble (“trouble” doesn’t seem like a severe enough word) are men, but most are. Lots of finically successful countries’ leaders are men, too, but I’m choosing to ignore that fact for the sake of this argument. Men are too busy waving their sticks at each other and trying to determine how they can grow a cooler beard to truly run the world. Women are focused and tactical fighters. Our wars wouldn’t be fought on battlefields or with nuclear weapons. They’d be won with words and coffee, awesome shoes and careful, purposeful words. My dad pointed out to me that women never forget when they’ve been slighted, suggesting that this is an argument against women leaders. I see this as a benefit. For example, if I were the prime minster of Canada and the female leader of the United States offended me, I’d remember it forever. I’d likely fall asleep thinking about it on several occasions, knowing that she knew she’d wronged me. I’d then strike back, maybe a month later, maybe three years later and get her back. She’d have to acknowledge that she owed me that wrongdoing and we’d be even. It’s quite simple, this female politics as I understand it. No missiles. No stupid mustaches. Just a little name calling, some double crossing and maybe poison, if necessary. Easy peasy, women should rule the world.

The tale of many cities managing growth I had an interesting chat the other day with my friend, Michael Zwaagstra, as we were visiting their place in Steinbach. In addition to being a published author on the subject of education and a school teacher, Michael is also a second term city councillor for the city of Steinbach, Manitoba. For those not familiar with it, Steinbach is about 45 minutes from Winnipeg, close enough to be a bedroom community. However, it is also a thriving community in its own right - with several prominent trucking companies, a window manufacturer and a biotech firm. The community also has made a niche for itself in the automobile sales area, competing substantially on price compared to Winnipeg dealers. It is growing like a weed, except that’s the wrong terminology. It’s not a noxious plant, but a well-tended flower in the Manitoba Bible Belt. Steinbach is a predominately Mennonite community, one with a strong work ethic, overflowing churches and very low crime rate. These are not mutually exclusive. It is also very close in size to the communities I have lived in most of my life - Yorkton, North Battleford and Estevan. Since I was the city hall reporter in North Battleford for five years, invariably we end up talking civic politics - from both sides of the council table. This month we had reciprocal visits to Estevan and Steinbach, and took long walks in the evening through the respective downtowns. I told him a story I had heard about how an oil sector company had been seeking to expand its operation in Estevan, but had not been making much headway with city hall. Apparently Weyburn caught wind of this, and made a sweet offer. The company then supposedly took this offer to Estevan and the city finally got their act in gear, lest the operation move down the road to a competing city. I related how for Saskatchewan cities, it is standard practice from municipal governments to
only had sidewalks on one side, and are very narrow by Saskatchewan standards. Many streets only have parking on one side. There is no city-owned greenhouse operated yearround providing flowers for the beautiful flower baskets hanging from light standards, such as North Battleford has. “We let the private sector provide that,” Michael said. In this tale of many cities, it’s interesting to see how a community that does not have a huge pool of oil under it or coal beside it is able to keep up with the demands of a growing vibrant economy. Perhaps some civic leaders might want to take notice. Brian Zinchuk is editor of Pipeline News. He can be reached at brian.zinchuk@ sasktel.net.

From the Top of the Pile offer several years of no municipal taxes in return for new development, either commercial, industrial or residential. Cities trip all over themselves offering different, yet incredibly similar, incentive packages. Councils fret constantly over the effectiveness, or lack thereof, of their incentives. What sort of incentives do you offer? I asked Michael. “None,” he said flatly. “We offer the lowest taxes in Manitoba. That is our incentive.” Wow. I noted that almost every story I write for Pipeline News talks about the housing shortage in southeast Saskatchewan, and how it is the limiting factor for growth of individual companies and of the region as a whole. I also told him of the great difficulty Estevan has had over the years in attracting residential developers, despite one of the most vibrant economies in the province. Finally one is going to be developing several hundred lots on the northwest corner of the city. As of the time of his visit, they had not yet scratched dirt. With the oil patch now going great guns with drier weather and high oil prices, Estevan could use 1,000 new housing units tomorrow, never mind a few hundred. Most of that demand is for rental apartments, something that precious few developers want to build in Saskatchewan without government subsidies. This is not the case in Steinbach, Michael said. Yes, there is strong housing demand, but developers come there freely, without demanding subsidies. They certainly get none from the City of Steinbach. And they not only build house subdivisions, but rental apartments as well. Again, what is the incentive? “We have the lowest taxes in Manitoba.” There are a few small tradeoffs, I noticed. Most Steinbach streets that I saw

Jets: other names need not apply Like a bear over a long winter, the Jets name for the National Hockey League’s franchise in Winnipeg spent a long hibernation, beginning in 1995 when the team left for Phoenix and became the Coyotes, and ending in June, when Winnipeg’s owners, having acquired the Atlanta Thrashers’ franchise, made a legion of Prairie hockey fans joyous by rechristening the team Jets. J-E-T-S - JETS! JETS! JETS! All is well once again in Winnipeg, but for the longest time, team owner
Mark Chipman and general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff kept fans on edge, suggesting Jets was a name that represented the past, and this relocated franchise, bringing the NHL back to hockey’s heartland, was all about the future. Dozens of potential names were bandied about, but Jets remained in the hearts of Winnipeg and Manitoba hockey fans. In the end, after Falcons, Moose, Monarchs, Thrashers, Warriors and other would-be monikers were considered and dismissed,
Bruce Penton Sports Columnist it was made official that the name Jets was coming out of hibernation. It’s a perfect fit. NHL, Winnipeg, Jets. It didn’t have to be. Ownership could have established a first for professional sports by merging the names Thrashers and Jets, jumbling the letters

around and then calling the team either Threats, when the franchise was contending for the Stanley Cup, or Jesters, if it became a laughingstock. Seriously, though, Jets was the overwhelming choice when fans were polled. Even though grabbing the old name might reduce valuable marketing potential (old Jets clothing would continue to sell, even if a new Falcons name and logo, for example, were established), the emotional attachment to the Jets never faded, even during the team’s 16-year absence. While the majority of North American sports fans associate Jets with the football team from New York, the hockey world - and especially those in Winnipeg and Manitoba - think only of ice and the NHL when they hear the roar of this newest Jets incarnation. • Comedy writer Jerry Perisho: “Tiger Woods fired his long-time caddie Steve Williams. resentatives Monday night by an unexpectedly easy margin. While there had been some suspense about the outcome in the lower house, the legislation’s backing from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican leader Mitch McConnell virtually guarantees it will receive the 60 votes required when it comes to the floor of the upper chamber at noon (1600GMT). The administration has said that without the new borrowing authority, the government could not pay all its bills. The bitterly fought legislation pairs a longsought increase in the government’s borrowing cap with promises of more than $2 trillion of budget cuts over the upcoming decade.

INTERNATIONAL WASHINGTON - A deal that heads off an unprecedented U.S. financial default and begins the process of curbing the country’s spiraling debt was expected to clear a final legislative hurdle in the Senate on Tuesday, just hours before the deadline. President Barack Obama promised to sign the measure immediately. The bill raises the current $14.3 trillion cap on U.S. borrowing, which expires at midnight. It cleared the House of Rep-

NATIONAL EDMONTON - Edmonton police say a second person has died after a fire at an Edmonton seniors complex. Arson and homicide officers are investigating the early morning blaze that erupted at the Bethany Senior Citizens Home, an independent living centre for low-income seniors on the city’s south side. Police say they were initially called regarding an explosion at the rear of the building and a car in a parking lot was on fire. Sixty people were forced from the building in the city’s Old Strathcona district, while one woman had to be rescued from her third floor suite. Initial reports were that one person had died and 10 people were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation. Two of 70 firefighters called to the scene suffered minor injuries.
*** ESTEREL, Que. - A pair of massive bronze statues by the late, great JeanPaul Riopelle — worth about $1 million — have been stolen from a public display area in Quebec. Provincial police say by the time they arrived, the two sculptures, created in 1963 and weighing 1,000 pounds, were gone. Police say they found a white van that was used in the heist; but there was no sign of the statues, which were stolen Monday about 100 kilometres northeast of Montreal. Earlier Monday, passersby noticed the pair of statues — named “La Defaite” — had been knocked down and were on their sides instead of their pedestals. Later, a municipal

LOCAL ESTEVAN - Repair of Highway 39 is underway, though the cost has not yet been determined. Repairs to the highway’s bridge south of Estevan will continue for another week and a half to two weeks, according to The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure July 26. Turnbull Excavating of Estevan has been contracted to do much of the work on the bridge, and has installed a working pad to allow workers and equipment access to the bridge’s southern side. The repairs are necessary because of erosion of the north and south side bridge supports, caused by the abnormally high water levels during the spring flooding that hit the southeast corner. Construction is also occurring west of Macoun, where the Ministry is working to raise the highway’s driving surface by 0.6 metres, in an effort to alleviate some of the stress caused by excess water in the area.

Tiger Woods is back playing this weekend PROVINCIAL REGINA - With the Saskatchewan Roughriders off to an abysmal 1-4 start, the focus has shifted from a Swiss cheese defence to an offence that frightens only the coach staff. Through the first three games of the CFL season, Saskatchewan’s porous defence surrendered an average of 38 points in lopsided losses to Edmonton (42-28), Montreal (39-25) and Hamilton (33-3). The defence has been considerably more effective in the last two outings
— a 27-24 victory over the Alouettes and a respectable 22-18 loss to the Calgary Stampeders — but now the offence is floundering. Offensive co-ordinator Doug Berry believes the problem is largely the team’s inability to make the proverbial “big play” when the opportunity presents itself. By “big play,” Berry means a gain of 20 or more yards. He crunched some numbers on the weekend and discovered that to this point in 2011 the Roughriders have made 22 big plays, whereas through the same
stretch a year ago, they had made 44 and were sporting a 4-1 record. Berry is keeping his fingers crossed that will change on Friday night when Saskatchewan takes on the winless B.C. Lions (0-5) in Vancouver.

In a pair of moves on Sunday, Boston first sent minor league right-handers Stephen Fife and Juan Rodriguez and catcher Tim Federowicz to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for outfielder Trayvon Robinson. The Red Sox then traded Robinson to the Mariners with double-A outfielder ChihHsien Chiang for Bedard and Josh Fields.
NATIONAL BOSTON - Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Monday that recently acquired Canadian left-hander Erik Bedard is scheduled to start Thursday’s series fi nale against Cleveland. The Ottawa native,

Boston had to bolster its starting pitching depth with right-hander Clay Buchholz sidelined with a back injury. The club already lost right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka for the season after he had Tommy John surgery in early June. INTERNATIONAL AKRON, Ohio - Tiger Woods is back on a PGA Tour golf course for the first time in nearly three months after an injury layoff. Woods returns this week at the Bridgestone Invitational, and he wasted little time on Tuesday at Firestone. He was on the
practice range just as the sun was starting to rise, playing nine holes accompanied by swing coach Sean Foley of Burlington, Ont. On the bag is Byron Bell, his childhood friend. Woods announced two weeks ago that he had fired Steve Williams, his caddie of 12 years. Woods last played May 12 when he withdrew from The Players Championship after nine holes because of recurring injuries to his left leg. He vowed not to return until he was fully healthy, and he walked without a limp during practice.

Locals involved in kidnapping back in court
• You can whiten chopping boards with lemon juice. Just use the cut side of a lemon to scrub the board, let it sit for up to 10 minutes, and rinse clean. • If you’re stuffing pillows or a child’s toy with foam-rubber chips, rub a bit of fabric softener over your hands first. The tiny pieces won’t get stuck to your hands with static, and it will smell nice to boot! • Here’s a fun activity for the kids: Let them “paint” cookies. Using clean craft brushes or watercolor brushes, the kids can use food coloring to paint designs on cookies. They can even paint the dough before it’s been cooked, and then see how the design spreads and settles. • “We made our own umbrella stand by taking the bottoms off of two large coffee cans and then stacking them on top of a third can with only the top removed. We taped the cans together and covered the whole thing with leftover wallpaper, which we sealed where it overlapped.” -- I.D. in Ohio • If you have stubborn shellac on your paintbrush, try dissolving it by soaking it in alcohol. Make sure you do this in a well-ventilated area. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O.
