Earning stories in Aboriginal Storytelling Month Kicking off Aboriginal Storytelling Month at the Estevan Library on Feb. 1, Rodger Ross shared a part of his native culture with a small group of interested listeners. Adhering to the tradition of oral storytelling, Ross, an independent film and video producer in Regina, spoke about some of his journey in life, listening to the elders of different lodges and “earning” the stories he was told. “We shouldn’t assume to know the stories,” he said. “They must be earned.” He spoke of a time in Piapot when he was being told a story by an old man. The story got to a certain point and then the man finished. In another place and another time, a woman began telling Ross the same story, but this time continued and recited to the end. “She said to me, ‘Now this part you don’t know.’ This was a lady I had never met before. That’s how powerful (storytelling) is.” Ross began by speaking about the use of tobacco in native culture, and that the tobacco they use is not related to the well-known form everyone thinks of in cigarettes. The toxins were never present in their tobacco, he told the group. “Tobacco was given to us, and we use it to put down as an offering.” The peace pipe Ross discarded as a falsity. “It’s just a pipe,” he said. “When you put Grandmother Tree and Grandfather Rock together, all creation stands still. We light it with the sacred fire, take (the smoke) into our mouth and expel it. Now we speak with Creator’s mouth, we speak absolute truth.” He said when his ancestors have done that and given promises, the burden to fulfil those fall to him.
11016PA00
“That is the significance of the pipe.” To hear a story told from an elder, you present them with a tobacco offering. To be an elder, he explained, doesn’t mean just to grow old. “It’s not about age. It’s about the knowledge you obtain.” Ross told the attendees of the number four. Four directions, four seasons, four medicines (tobacco, sage, sweet grass and cedar) and four laws. Christians, he said, have 10 laws or commandments, revolving around shall nots. “Very negative,” he said. He listed the four laws his people abide by are simply love, truth, language and honour all life. He noted the different influences in cultures and that there is no wrong way, there are only different ways. Another misconception he said of the natives is that they followed the buffalo. “The buffalo gave itself to us at the beginning of creation. We didn’t need to follow them.” Their patterns for moving were to follow the four medicines as they grow in different seasons. Continuing with the theme of storytelling, Ross didn’t only share some of the customs of he and his
ancestors but shared some of their stories. He told his audience of the muskrat that brought land to the surface, after Creator flooded the Earth. That paw full of sand eventually became North America. He told of how the raven became black and stole the moon. The crest on his shirt depicted how the raven turned black and stole the sun. Ross told some of his own story, a love of martial arts, wanting to follow in the footsteps of his childhood idol, Bruce Lee. He studied martial arts by the teachings of Chinese, Korean and Japanese masters, becoming a second degree black belt. Growing up, he loved watching The Green Hornet on television, when Lee played Kato, the superhero’s sidekick. He even impersonated Lee, doing a spot-on impression word-for-word of a graveyard scene from Lee’s Enter the Dragon film. “I never got to be Bruce Lee, but I had a great journey. Goals aren’t always meant to be reached, but love the journey.” Also speaking as part of the kickoff to Aboriginal Storytelling Month was Rhonda Donais, who performed at Sacred Heart School.
Kicking off Aboriginal Storytelling Month on Feb. 1, Rachel Donais performs as Tulip for the younger grades at Sacred Heart School. Donais shared aboriginal stories of both the silly and the serious, about why the rabbit has narrow shoulders and how the moose got its baggy fur.

Perspective Expressed Opinions Jordan Baker Estevan Mercury Reporter
Ads are the big winners at Super Bowl Super Bowl Sunday is here. I’ve always watched the Super Bowl, but I can only remember one really good game in the my lifetime. The event almost always falls below the expectations and hype that are set by the analysts and sports shows that pump up the big game. But they have to do that if they still want to charge a couple million dollars for a 30 second TV spot. There are many reasons people watch the Super Bowl. Maybe you’re a football fan, I’m a Green Bay Packers fan, so yeah, I’ll be watching for that reason. Maybe it’s the halftime show; this year it’s the Black Eyed Peas. I can’t say I will tune in just for them, in fact I don’t remember a
Page 4
halftime show I was actually excited to see, but maybe the musical acts are your thing. The other draw is the commercials, which I think is hilarious. I know that advertising is important because it pays for everything in media and sports, but the advertisers win big time when it comes to Super Bowl ads. On any other night, during any other program, be it sports, a movie or a TV show, everyone groans about the commercials. I certainly do. But I know people who don’t like football, who don’t watch any other game all year, but tune into the Super Bowl just to watch commercials. On Monday morning people will go over the game, who won, what was the big play. By Monday afternoon that will all be forgotten. By the following Monday people will still be talking about the Super Bowl ads. They will get millions of hits on YouTube. They are huge. The game has become a gigantic show, no longer a four-quarter football game. It’s all about the ads and the party. That’s one of the reasons that, as far as football is concerned, the Grey Cup is a much more watchable game. It’s still mostly about football. I hate to say it, but I like the super ads. There are always beer ads that do the same thing in a slightly different way, more Clydesdales, comedians and cleavage. The ads I like are for companies you don’t really know, or products you don’t see a lot that come up with something really clever. There are always a couple that have memorable spots. But that’s not why I watch. I watch because any given year, the game could be great. Any year could play host to the next classic Super Bowl match. Each year I feel disappointed by the game that should be the best football of the year but never is. It’s the two best teams going mano-a-mano for all the glory and I’m sure the players don’t care how interesting the game is as long as they are the ones smiling after the last seconds tick down. Rooting for the cheeseheads, I’d say the game is 100 per cent the draw for me. It’s going to be the second really good game in my lifetime. Or maybe I’m being paid by the advertisers to talk this thing up and get you in front of the high def in time for kickoff.

RM of Estevan not prepared to commit to new fire truck The RM of Estevan council held their regular meeting on Tuesday. Council considered a proposal from the Estevan Fire Rescue Services regarding their desire to purchase a new fire truck with aerial capabilities. At this time the RM is not able to commit to the support of this purchase. About $12,000 of repairs and renovations were required to the roof and office spaces affected by recent weather causing water damage to a portion of the office. The RM expects insurance will cover those repairs. Council will be seeking provincial funding to aid in the control of noxious
weeds in the municipality. They have a weed control officer to combat the leafy spurge problem in the municipality, so they are seeking funding to help cover those costs. Council will be writing the Ministry of Highways seeking clarification on two issues. They would like the ministry to review two high volume intersections in the RM, on either side of the city. The intersection at Highway 29 and Breeze Street west of the city and the intersection east of the city near Sawyer Safety and Do-All pose safety concerns and council would like the ministry to address these locations. Council will also be seeking clari-
fication and information on the proposed truck route. Creighton Lodge has operated for six months since the consortium of rural municipalities acquired ownership of the facility and council is very pleased with its operation thus far in terms of both resident satisfaction, management and financial stability. Council was advised that the RM/City Health Committee continues to research and support the issues surrounding the recruitment and retention of physicians. Council is optimistic that some new incentives and initiatives such as considering a resident program will yield positive results in this regard.
Council reviewed the proposal to connect the west industrial area to the city sewer system. They also reviewed a request from an equipment supplier to the Boundary Dam Power Station upgrade, with regards to haul routes to move large pieces of equipment through the RM to the plant. Councillor John Kish was appointed to represent council at the annual Mu-
nicipal Hail convention in March. Reeve Kelly Lafrentz and Councillors Dennis Blackburn and Kish were authorized to represent council at the 2011 SARM annual convention. Council has requested information on numerous methods of dust suppression on gravel roads adjacent to dwellings and businesses in the municipality. This will be back before
council to be considered at a future meeting. Members approved the purchase of two new computers and related software for the administrative staff and council chambers. Council authorized their financial support for the Agriculture in the Classroom program being conducted in schools throughout the province, educating children of the importance of agriculture.

ANSWER: Autoimmunity is the explanation for many illnesses, including both skin and joint psoriasis. “Autoimmunity” indicates that the immune system -our protection against germ invasion and other harmful attacks -- for reasons not yet understood, turns against our own bodies; in this case, it’s the skin and joints. The immune system targets joints in as many as 7 percent of those who suffer from skin psoriasis. That’s a considerable number of people when you consider that as many as 3 percent of the entire population suffers from skin psoriasis. Skin psoriasis precedes joint psoriasis most of the

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2011
Peter Pan Q: When I was a kid I was enchanted by Peter Pan. Needless to say, I begged and finally got the 1950 original cast album on the Broadway production of “Peter Pan,” in addition to a wristwatch and a coloring book, both issued about the time the movie opened in theaters. What do you think they are worth? -- Doris, Rio Rancho, N.M. A: I consulted several price guides and think your original cast album is valued in the $25 to $30 range, assuming it is in excellent condition. The coloring book, if it was issued by Whitman in 1952, is worth about $20, and the wristwatch approximately $35. *** Q: A distant relative attended the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, and I have several of his souvenirs, including a pocket knife showing the cascade fountains, a plate with a design of the observation wheel and several silver-plated spoons. -- Gerald, Divide, Colo. A: One of the better price guides is 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair Mementos and Memorabilia by the late Robert L. Hendershott, and privately published in 1994. Both your knife and plate are referenced and listed in the $100 to $200 range. Considering that this excellent guide is now 15 years old, I would add about 30 percent to allow for appreciation. Most silver-plated spoons from the fair seem to sell in the $15 to $25 range. This was, without a doubt, one of this country’s most popular fairs, and items from it are both plentiful and popular with collectors. *** Q: While on vacation several years ago, my late husband purchased a Royal Doulton figurine called “Fortune Teller” for me. I would like to know its approximate value for insurance purposes. -- Betty, Sun City, Ariz. A: Your figurine was introduced in 1955, and production continued until it was retired in 1967. According to Royal Doulton Price Guide, edited by Kyle Husfloen and published by Krause, your figurine would retail for about $550. *** Q: I have a set of International Silver flatware in the Enchanted Rose pattern. When was it made? -- Art, Portsmouth, Va.
A: It was introduced in 1954. Write to Larry Cox

Displays by Local Artists Hours: Tuesday - Friday (8:30 - 6:00p) Saturday (1:00 - 4:00p) The Estevan Art Gallery is grateful for the support of the City of Estevan, Saskatchewan Arts Board, Sask Culture, Sask Lotteries, Museum Association of Saskatchewan, and Canadian Heritage.
Jean is the author of “Expressive Portraits: Creative Methods for Painting People.” She has been painting for over twenty years, balancing her strong teaching abilities and writing with her continuing aspiration to convey her experiences and ideas in visual form. Pedersons’s traditional practice includes referential imagery of people, still life, landscape and abstraction. The layering of a variety of media offers the artist an assortment of possibilities within her work; quality of edge, line and texture all play a vital role within her imagery. Although Pederson is well known for her mastery of watercolours, mixed media has become an important venue for her creative expression. Farm Fragments concentrates on the theme of the Family Farm, its historical inception and its evolution of experience and abandonment throughout the century. Pederson has collected various “fragments” of her family’s farm including old receipts, artefacts of the homestead (sections of linoleum, doors, moulding, shingles), and photographs as a means to tell the story of the ever-changing landscape and unique social fabric of the prairies with concentration on the role of women. In conjunction with her abstracted paintings, collage, Polaroid transfers of historic and contemporary photographs, and installations the exhibition comes together to provide a splintered or reÁected view of those pioneers who built the social and economic foundations for the Canadian Prairies. “This exhibition is as eclectic as the people who made up the rural society” - Jean Pederson

Linda Gudmundson January 18th, 2011 - February 26th, 2011 Pink! (Exhibition), 2011 | Mixed Media Linda Gudmundson is an Estevan-based artist whose work is inspired by and evokes expressions of femininity. Vintage women’s magazines, compacts, jewellery, and clothing provide inspiration for her latest exhibition, Pink! in which layers of collage, stamping and text is applied to sealed boxes that entice the viewer to touch and interact. Gudmundson’s exploration of femininity suggests various dichotomies between the masculinity, modernism and the white box, placed value systems among consumed objects and their packaging, and the physical or metaphysical connection between the artist, the artwork, and the collector. Having studied at the University of Regina and the Minneapolis School of Art, Gudmundson has exhibited and taught in various communities in Southern Saskatchewan for over a decade. An avid painter, she has completed many major commissions and large scale murals for private and public organizations including the most recent acquisition by Siever, Vermeersch & Fonstad Accounting Firm in Estevan. SNOWMOBILE ROUTES The snowmobile routes are indicated by the bold dashed line. CITY OF ESTEVAN SNOWMOBILE BYLAW – ROUTE MAP The snowmobile route, as indicated by the dark dashed lines on the route map, may be lawfully travelled on by snowmobile operators between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. The designated route is to be used solely for the purpose of entering and exiting the corporate limits of the City of Estevan. Speeds on the route are not to exceed forty kilometers per hour and snowmobile operators are required to follow the rules of the road pursuant to Section 219 of the TrafÀc Safety Act. Any person who contravenes any provisions of this bylaw is guilty of an offense and liable on summary conviction – For the Àrst offence, a Àne of not less than $200.00 and not more than $1,000.00 and for second and any subsequent offence, a Àne of not less than $400.00 and not more than $2,000.00. View the actual bylaw online at www.estevan.ca CITY OF ESTEVAN SNOW REMOVAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the goal of the snow removal policy? The goal of the snow removal policy is to provide a timely, adequate and cost effective level of service so that streets are passable and vehicles can move in the City. Once the initial clean-up is completed standard procedure of Public Works is to continue to widen and grade streets. A copy of the full policy is available at www. estevan.ca When does the City start to clean up after a snow storm? Public Works monitors the streets and the major response to a snow storm does not generally start until it has stopped snowing. It is dangerous due to reduced visibility and ineffective to clear Priority 1 areas more than once if the streets are passable. Streets are monitored and intersections will be sanded or trouble areas cleared if necessary. Who do we call to report icy streets, blocked intersection or other snow related issues? Please call 634-1800 during regular hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. After hours, please call the after-hours emergency number at 634- 3770. The after hour calls are directed to an answering service who will forward calls to the appropriate persons. As well, Estevan Police Services monitor the streets after hours and will request that the intersections be sanded or trouble areas be cleared. How does the City determine what streets get cleaned first? The City classifies the streets into 3 priorities: Priority 1 – Arterial Streets Streets with high volumes of traffic and main routes through and around the City such as 4th Street – average daily traffic volume of more than 8,000. Priority 2 – Collector Roads Streets with somewhat lesser volumes of traffic and designed to route traffic from local streets to the Arterial Streets such as Nicholson Road – average daily traffic of between 1,000 and 8,000. Priority 3 – Local Streets Streets that generally only serve the people that live in that area with low volumes of traffic and mostly residential – less than 1,000 average daily traffic volume. Within Priority Three there are some streets that are
extremely narrow and have to be windrowed and transported away in the same day such as Grundeen Crescent. Will the City complete some areas more than once in a major snowfall before all streets are completed? Yes, if the Priority 1 and 2 become impassable those streets would be cleared of snow again to ensure that traffic can move. Can home owners blow snow from their sidewalks, driveways and parking lots into streets? No, property owners cannot as it makes it more difficult for the city to complete a proper cleanup; it causes the streets to be rougher than necessary, causes a hazard to motorists and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. The only place this is permitted is the downtown business district as they have nowhere else to shovel the snow to. Should we keep our sidewalks clear of snow? Yes, the Traffic Bylaw requires it as it makes it safer for pedestrians and those people that have to walk on the streets for work purposes such as letter carriers and meter readers. Also please make sure that extension cords crossing sidewalks to vehicles do not create trip hazards. Can we pile snow from the sidewalks on the streets? No, the only place this is allowed is the downtown business district as these buildings do not have any other area to move the snow to. Can home and business owners pile snow on their own private properties adjacent to alleys and streets? Yes, however make sure that the piles are not so high as to create a blind corner limiting visibility for pedestrians and motorist Can home and business owners pile snow on existing windrows? No, this creates visibility and driving hazards, makes it more difficult and time consuming to remove the windrows and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. Can snow be piled in city alleys and streets? No this eliminates access for garbage collection, fire protection and other emergency services and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. However it is permitted in cul-de-sacs as long as the snow is piled in the centre of the cul-de-sac only as other piles of snow impact

neighbors and makes snow removal more difficult. Can I park my spare vehicle or Motor Home on the Street? Yes, however vehicles are not permitted to be parked on any streets in excess of 24 hours and cause a lot of problems for snow removal and traffic. Can I park on the streets for less than 24 hours? Yes, however in the event of a major snowstorm we ask that all vehicles be parked in driveways or other areas where possible. In the event of a Major snowstorm the City plans to have all areas windrowed where required as soon as possible, providing equipment is operational. Please do not park your vehicles on the streets if possible as the vehicles access for snow removal equipment and have greater potential of being damaged by other vehicles and equipment. When are City snow dump areas used? The City Snow dump sites are operational from 6am –

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2011 4. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until crisp. Cool. Serve hearts and extra crusts and pieces with a big glass of cold milk, hot chocolate or a cup of tea. Store extras in a cookie tin. Tips: --If you don’t want to use an entire loaf at once, simply put the remaining bread in the freezer. Thaw the amount you wish, and make more hearts or other cookie-cutter shapes, such as a shamrock for St. Patrick’s Day, a bunny for Easter, etc. --If you prefer using a favorite bread from your local bakery, ask to have it sliced extra thin, or slice it very thin yourself when you’re ready to make the recipe. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. To find more of her creative family recipes and activities, visit www.donnasday.com and link to the NEW Donna’s Day Facebook fan page. Make Cinnamon-Toast Heart Crisps Sometimes during the winter months, I just need a “Day Brightener” when it’s dark and dreary outside. And that’s where my spunky friend Carol fits in. On a recent morning jog, when I popped by her cheery house to see what she was up to, I was greeted at the door with her wide smile and the tempting aroma of cinnamon and good coffee wafting from her kitchen. Stepping inside, I had barely removed my wool scarf when she pulled from the oven a large cookie sheet filled with her signature cinnamon-toast heart crisps and said, “I bet you can’t eat just one!” Brighten your day and Valentine’s Day with these easy-to-prepare cookie-like treats using very thinly sliced bread and everyone’s favorite combination: cinnamon and sugar. They’ll be a hit with the whole family. Here’s what you’ll need for 25 to 30 hearts: --1 loaf of thin-sliced enriched white bread such as Pepperidge Farm Very Thin bread --Cinnamon and sugar mixture
(c) 2011 Donna Erickson Distributed by King Features Synd.
--Butter or margarine --3-by-3-inch heart-shape cookie cutter --Cookie baking sheets Here’s the fun: 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. 2. Spread butter or margarine on each slice of bread and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar mixture. 3. Cut out a heart shape with the cookie cutter on each slice and place on ungreased cookie sheets. Don’t throw out crusts or leftover pieces! Put them on another cookie sheet.

“Get Capone” by Jonathan Eig (Simon & Schuster, $28) Reviewed by Chris Richcreek There are some authors whose books you look for because you know the writing will be great, no matter the subject. Jonathan Eig is one of those authors.
His book about baseball legend Lou Gehrig’s life, “Luckiest Man,” was exceptional. His followup, “Opening Day,” the story of Jackie Robinson’s first major-league season, was a solid piece of work as well. With his latest, “Get Capone,” Eig has left baseball behind to focus on an infamous figure -- Al Capone.
The subtitle of the book is “The Secret Plot That Captured America’s Most Wanted Gangster.” Eig shows how President Herbert Hoover and his Cabinet were focused on finding a way to jail Capone, who basically ruled Chicago throughout the 1920s by providing the one thing wanted by an audience already tired of the recently enacted 18th Amendment establishing Prohibition: bootleg liquor. Eig’s effort to detail the Capone legend -- aided by access to government documents that were made available only in the past few years -- has him trying to cut through the various half-truths and myths that sprung up through the decades. As Eig stated in his Sources section, “Nothing
ur lowest price EVER! TV and High Speed Internet Bundle
THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2011 in these pages is invented or embellished.” He presents his case as to why Capone was not the mastermind of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and, like others before, punctures the myth of superlawman Eliot Ness. Throughout the book, Eig offers a well-written portrait of the times and a deep insight into the man who not only ruled a small corner of the world, but garnered a lot of publicity in the process. Once again, Eig proves that his name on the cover makes for good reading inside.
