Theatre camps strive for a hit The theatre season may have been a wash, but youth musical theatre is continuing with a little razzle and a lot of dazzle. The camps were organized by the Souris Valley Theatre in the past, with the help of the actors that

were performing during the theatre’s summer season. Because the season had to be cancelled due to flooding, three local women have now taken the reins. The show must go on. This is the first time Arlene Lafrentz and Evanne

The Orpheum Theatre extends our apologies for the inconvenience of cancelling shows without notice on Sunday, July 10. We were not informed that our water would be shut off for the day.

Wilhelm, a mother-daughter duo of voice and music teachers in the Energy City, have been involved. Rounding out the trio is Sharlene Holiday, a school principal in Estevan for a number of years but is now living in Regina, who focuses on the dance. The trio is now known as the Estevan Triple Threat Theatre. They got involved with the camps this year through the theatre, but when the season was cancelled, they already had 50 registrants. The decision was made to carry on and the group now has space at the St. John the Baptist community centre. The space is perfect for the camps, as they will have access to the gymnasium and a couple of classrooms. “We had always decided that no matter what we were going to go ahead with the camps,” said Lafrentz. The camps cater to youth aged eight to 15, and is for everyone from beginners to those with multiple years of experience. “They’re learning the three main areas of musical theatre, which are acting, dancing and singing,” said Wilhelm. “They’ll have sessions in all three of those each day that they’re there. And they’re preparing a performance for the end of the week that will be open to the public and to their parents.” The performance is a collection that the kids will

have worked on during the week. “We’ll kind of get to know (the kids) based on the forms that they filled out that we receive on the first day, and then we’re going to pick a variety of numbers that will suit the kids that are coming,” she added. Wilhelm explained the final performances will be ensemble musical numbers. “There won’t be a lot of solo stuff because we need to make sure we’re involving all the kids, so it will be group, ensemble performances.” The participants will be in groups based on their age, as the activities for the older groups may be more advanced than for the younger ones. However, there will be some numbers where the whole group will be together. “We want the kids who have more experience to have an influence on the kids who have less, and for them to see that, working back and forth,” said Wilhelm. “Sometimes there’s safety in numbers,” added Lafrentz. “When you’re together and singing and acting, everybody’s doing

the same thing, and so then you open up the freedom to be safe to do all kinds of things. The imagination comes forward with the drama and the singing and the dancing.” Their involvement in the camps came after the theatre wanted to pursue the possibility of involving more local people. Wilhelm said it came down to a chain of acquaintances who connected her, Lafrentz and Holiday with the theatre. “Because we are teachers, it was a good way for (the theatre) to say, ‘Oh would you be interested in handling the kids camp?’ because we’re used to dealing with kids all the time.” They have been involved with productions at the Estevan Comprehensive School in the past as well. The Lafrentz family is a musical one through and through. “We’ve always had (music) in the house, so then it just seemed that (my children) automatically moved into it. We sing as a family, and the kids are very musical,” said Lafrentz. Wilhelm auditioned for voice performing at the

University of Regina before moving over to studying education in her second year at school, finishing with a major in music. She recalls going to Phantom of the Opera in Regina with her mother when she was eight. “Since then I was pretty much hooked that I wanted to do that,” she said. Musicals dominate the pair’s love of theatre and Lafrentz said it’s great to bring it to young people and help them perform. “The younger students, you want to give them a base,” Lafrentz added. “Somebody who’s been doing it for five years, you hope they’ve received the basics and you can move them forward with a little more harder material, or something more they can learn about the craft.” The first of two camps runs July 25 to 29 with the second taking place the week of Aug. 8 to 12 and performances coming the afternoon of the final day. They are still accepting registrations up until the first day of the camp, and anyone who is interested is asked to contact Wilhelm at 636-2262.

One-on-one with Brenna Nickel Brenna Nickel is the new pastor for St. Paul’s United Church in Estevan. She hails from New Jersey and has led the Estevan congregation through two Sunday services so far. Where were you before coming to Estevan? I was attending Princeton Theological Seminary, which is in New Jersey, but I was most recently living in Philadelphia for my last year of grad school. I was just living there, studying and working. You’re from New Jersey originally? Yeah. I want to college in Boston. Then did a year in Mississippi doing Katrina relief work, and then came back to New Jersey for grad school. I’m pretty much an east-coast gal. How did you get out to Estevan from there? Because we’re linked up with these churches in Portal, one of those is a Presbyterian church on the North Dakota side, and so about last December I was starting to look at jobs and things and just searched the database the denomination has. I came across their description. How the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. works, I would kind of describe it as online dating. You make a profile and they make a profile and you see what matches up. How did you match up with the church here? They were just very committed to their community and were very forward facing. There are a lot of churches, I would say that just look back to the past and try to recreate something that was successful in the 1960s but is no longer working. These churches are really trying to look

ahead and anticipate what’s happening. They are seeing how Estevan is changing and growing and wants to be a part of that. So that was really exciting to me. When I read the description I was like, “That’s really perfect, too bad it’s so far away.” But you applied anyway? I just applied. I applied to a million other things too, this just happened to be the thing that worked out. I seemed to be a good fit for them, and them for me. I think at this time of my life it felt like a good time to just have an adventure. You mentioned some churches looking to the past. Do you see part of your role as keeping a church modern? My understanding of leadership is that the wisdom is always in the room. There is a writer, he’s not actually church affiliated, he’s secular, but his name is Peter Block, and he talks about community organizing. His idea is that the wisdom is in the room, so I think I see myself as involved—I don’t want to sound like I’m an observer sitting on the fringes—but I feel like my gifts are able to pick out what people are naming. Then say it sounds like a lot of people want to do this, or that a lot of people are concerned about this. It’s not my role, from the top down, to say we’re going to do this, but to figure out what other people are already feel invested in. And to help people realize their own potential and gifts. You arrived July 1 and have done two Sunday services. What else have you been doing to introduce yourself to the community and congregation? I’m doing a lot of home visits. I’m starting to get connected with the ministerial association here that does all of the nursing home and assisted living facilities. They go and do services

there. Personally, I’ve gone to the farmers market last weekend. I’m trying to do things like that. Checking out the library. I hope to be a public figure in the town, besides just church people. I want to work with all types of people in the community. Do you see many differences between church groups in this area and the community here, as opposed to what you’re familiar with back in New Jersey? I would say yes and no. There are a lot of things that are across the board. Mainline Protestant denominations are having a hard time maintaining members and young people. That’s kind of universal. What I see as the difference here, there is this kind of ethos of prairie people that I keep hearing about, and this desire to help each other out, which I re a l l y saw as I was moving here. I

had a bit of difficulty with getting some of my things stuck in Minot. Somehow a trailer just appeared at my door with two people to drive down with me and move all my stuff, so it’s just kind of taking care of each other. In the churches on the east coast there are more divisions in some ways. There is a reluctance to be vulnerable to your neighbours and to the people in the church, and I’m already seeing here people asking for help because they know at some point they’ll be able to give that help back to somebody else. People are a bit more open and honest (here). How does a church fit into the community? I hope that we can be, sort of, a beacon of hospitality. That’s something that came across in the church’s description to me, and something that comes up over and over. Whether or not people are coming to church on Sunday morn-

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JULY 15, 2011 Page 3 ing, we hope that it’s a is that Estevan is becoming building that people will more and more diverse, it want to come and use for seems, from different people different things. We’re I talk to. If anything comes brainstorming all the dif- up around that, I know in ferent things we could use the States immigration car(the educational building ries a lot of weight with it, at the church for). I think and hopefully we can be a that there’s a place for the welcoming place for those church hopefully in issues folks coming in. Whether of justice, and different or not they come on Sunday things that come up. What morning, our calling is to I’ve seen in just a few weeks be hospitable to all people.

Canadian vocal shredders show a voice is OK, but lyrics are better. I recently wrote a music column without citing any Canadian artists, so I’ll make up for that right now. The kids these days are growing up with music talent shows broadcast nightly, from Canadian/American Idol, The Voice and all the other Got Talent shows that feature multiple kinds of acts, including a regular dose of singers. The winners of these talent shows are handed record deals, and sure the winners and even losers can sing, but they have very polished voices, sometimes lacking in personality. I’ve only ever seen small snippets of any of these shows, but I don’t recall ever seeing participants show off their songwriting talents. I think the talent shows miss this point completely, instead, trying to find someone who is popular and marketable. Geddy Lee is not winning a singing competition, not ever. But he is a huge part of what makes Rush, Rush. Gord Downie would not the make the final showcase of Canadian Idol, but his voice has character and fits perfectly with the Tragically Hip. Emily Haines might not place on any of these shows, but Metric isn’t brought down by her voice, it’s elevated by her vocal style.

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers These people are songwriters, with the exception of Lee who has a brilliant lyricist in the band’s drummer Neil Peart, and that’s what makes them great. From Gordon Lightfoot’s folky tales, to Downie’s expressions of Canadian life and Lee’s mystical metaphors, it’s more about what these guys are saying than how they’re saying it. I mean: “Tame the trackless waste, no virgin land left chaste; all shining eyes but never seeing.” Those are some powerful words, but I’m not sure they’d fit in with Michael Buble´. A nice voice is one thing, but if it’s not singing something meaningful even the purest of vocals ring hollow. Powerful lyrics are what drive music, as much as any instrument and far more than any voice. Lyrics make a voice great, even if the voice isn’t first-place worthy. Today’s youth growing up on talent shows and Bieber fever are being misled as

to what the true meaning of music is. That is what is within music. It’s art, and isn’t meant to be enjoyed in passing, but to evoke thought and emotion. Nobody would mistake Leonard Cohen for having a beautiful voice, but the man wrote Hallelujah, a song covered, admittedly often better than the original, by hundreds, perhaps thousands of people. It wasn’t Cohen’s voice that made the song great. Steven Page has one of the best voices in music, and I’m never going to say a great voice is undesirable. It’s just a small piece of the very large puzzle that is great music. Certainly the Barenaked Ladies will never be the same without him. As my office mate, who doesn’t recognize any of the names I’ve dropped in this column save for Bieber, will argue, music is simply a matter of taste. One man’s rich, lyric-laced epic is another’s shrill cry and bleeding ears. And she’s right; music is all a matter of taste. Being a bit of a stubborn guy who absolutely likes his own view of the matter, I feel my taste is better than hers. I expect she believes the opposite. I just hope my fears are unfounded that songwriting is being pushed to the fringes of importance by popular television shows that showcase all voice and no verse.

Life lessons are best when put to music Tonaya Marr

I’ve been watching a lot of Glee lately. And by that I mean A LOT of Glee. Originally I tried watching the show at its scheduled time but because I started halfway through season two, I had missed out on much of the backstory and just couldn’t get into it. So I started from the beginning this summer and having completed season one this week, I have to admit I’m hooked. Glee is more than just a bunch of high school students bursting into spontaneous song and dance. I’ve actually pulled out some valuable, relatable life lessons from the murky cloud of cheer and happiness. First, after graduation, you aren’t going to care about half of the people who were once so important to you. It’s a sad fact that people move apart and go their own directions, and often those who you once told your most personal and private details to will no longer even have you on BBM. This change isn’t because they will suddenly hate you, or that you’ll both become drastically different people with nothing in common. Time + distance + new relationships + new opportunities = - past friendships. This can be good too. In a positive way, losing touch with those who knew you in high school offers you the opportunity to “reinvent” yourself, or at least to start off without the personal baggage of high school. The drama you caused in Grade 10 when you wrote a note that was intercepted and read to your entire math class will no longer haunt you (unless of course it haunts you in your nightmares, which seems a bit drastic in such a situation). The people who once knew you so well will remain a part of the high school you left behind, as either happy memories to reminisce on, or negative horrors to discuss

Maybe It’s Just Me only with your diary or personal therapist. Second, in the Lady Gaga episode, Kurt says, “I’m proud to be different. It’s the best thing about me.” This quote ties in with a recent article in Time magazine which explained that it is often the quirks that made one weird in high school that make one desirable as an human being following graduation. Kurt is absolutely correct in saying that his uniqueness is what makes him desirable, and once he leaves high school it will be these traits that set him apart from the rest of his classes, fellow employees and online dating site competitors. Those girls who always seemed so bland and similar in high school? Ya, they’re still bland and similar in the real world. Third, high school art programs are important. If Glee is to be believed, a meagre arts budget allows for a full-time band, unlimited costumes and endless pages of sheet music. This may or may not be true. In any case, programs like the glee club that draw students from all backgrounds and interests and unite them together on one single yearbook page are valuable. These clubs also provide a place for students who wouldn’t otherwise be involved in extra-curricular activities. Athletics can only reach so many, and while I definitely think they deserve funding as well, I don’t think athletics are more

important than the arts, as Glee cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester constantly (and angrily) preaches. Many high school athletes are only ever going to be high school athletes, never advancing beyond the shiny wooden floor of the school gymnasium, just as many glee club performers are only ever going to perform in high school. Both experiences offer life-long lessons and the rewards of social interactions and connections. The arts are just as important as athletics and need to be treated as such. Finally, everything that seems SO HUGE in high school is really just peanuts a few years later. That devastating break up that kept you in your room sobbing hysterically and eating only Rolo ice cream for four months? Likely not going to be the best or worst thing that has ever happened to you. High school becomes its own little universe and every minute detail from those four years is analyzed and milked for every ounce of pain, joy and drama. Then you leave and start to see the big picture. I think the Glee kids have a pretty good grasp of the big picture. Take Rachel for example. She gets dumped, mocked and slurpee’d all the time, but she remains consistently annoying because she knows that high school is small in comparison with the rest of her life. Gold star for you, Rachel. I’ll probably start season two right away here, because I’m starting to go through withdrawal. I don’t know if it’s because I just enjoy a good Gaga remix or because of the actual morals I seem to be gaining. The nice thing about Glee is that it doesn’t beat you over the head with righteousness for an hour — lessons are spliced in among the torrid teen romances, faked pregnancies and power ballads. It’s awesome.

Reality TV is for the most part a dreadful waste of time, but it seems like everybody has their own show. My buddy Brian and I had an idea for a reality show starring ourselves. It occurred to us on the golf course. Neither of us has any hope of turning pro so we figured out a way to get paid to play golf, in a way becoming

professional golfers. He was working at TSN at the time, so he knew the people who could make this happen. The two of us would go around to golf courses every week and play them, as a camera crew followed us around. We think our conversations are hilarious and something anybody would want to listen to. We would critique and compare courses. Like how good the greens roll, or how the beer-cart service ranks. It would bring lots of exposure to Canadian courses, we could even bring in some guest appearances like Mike Weir or when we came around to this part of the country, Graham DeLaet. Tiger Woods is kind of on a hiatus, so he would have lots of time to come on the show and embarrass us on the course while we rib him about his personal life. I think we could find a niche market for this show. It could be called something like Bogey Golf or The Not-So-Pro Tour. I don’t think he ever pitched it to any of his bosses. It’s more of a Golf Channel show anyway. Just to be clear, neither of us actually think anybody would want to watch either of us golf and swear for a half hour. It must take a bit of a conceited person to really believe that their life is so interesting they need a camera crew around to document it and show the world, as if the world needs to see their life. I don’t know what Jersey Shore is, but from what I hear, those are the kinds of people populating it. Reality TV is all about the money for networks. They don’t have to pay for expensive, unimportant people called actors. They don’t need to pay for good writers, just a hack to make sure something happens each episode. Operating costs are rock bottom but revenue remains the same pushing profits up and making a show made by talented people obsolete. Reality TV is the realm of the untalented.

She

Reality TV is garbage. It’s the product of the writers’ strike and was meant to temporarily fill the space of quality, scripted television productions. It lasted because humans find themselves interesting and love to watch the drama unfold when strangers are forced into close proximity and told to survive. If the premise of a reality show was four individuals locked in a giant cardboard box for two weeks, people would still watch it. A way of improving the ratings would be to force them to ration food, or to include people of different genders, sexualities and races. Nothing says TV gold like starving strangers dealing with hormones and prejudice. All of that considered, reality TV is awesome. It’s like wearing comfy pyjamas and eating an entire cheesecake while being on a diet that could save your life. It’s a slow, painful death and I enjoy every minute of it. I think the reason reality is so great is that it makes the rest of us feel safe, normal and sane. Consider Jersey Shore. A show about a group of orange people getting paid to get drunk and smash things while yelling incredibly catchy phrases and wearing too tight clothing has terrific ratings and is making all sorts of cash for MTV. Jersey Shore turns a viewer’s brain into mush, there’s no doubt in my mind, but when I watch Snooki hunt for juice heads, I can’t help but feel like I am a whole person with my life completely together. I have a real head on my shoulders. I am going somewhere with my life. The Real World is another personal favourite. A bunch of strangers living in the same house in a strange city, making money consuming alcohol and hooking up with each other. In the world of reality TV, this is a show that has earned tons of money and lots of seasons. In the real world, this type of situation would most likely be labelled a cult. Pure genius. I can’t see reality TV leaving the television scene, which I think is great. Not only does reality TV make viewers feel better about themselves, it makes classy, well written TV shows better by comparison. Watch an episode of this season’s The Bachelorette followed by an episode from any season on The Big Bang Theory and you’ll see what I mean. Hysterical crying and heart break are never going to be as great as substance and good writing. But brainless trash is fun too, so reality TV is good in my books.

Horses are a hit with the girls For four years now, Pamela Wagner and her daughter Nina Lonsberry, have been organizing one of the most popular camps for kids in the area. At least for girls anyway. Young girls love horses. Generally all kids love horses, said Lonsberry, but she has noted a particular interest from girls for the week-long camp hosted each summer at the farm just south of Bienfait. With games like Survivor and Manhunter, there is lots fun to be had, and the competition tends to get a little cutthroat. She gives this group of attendees high praise, as they were able to go out and do some trail riding. “It’s a good group of kids,” said Lonsberry. “We didn’t have to entertain them as much (as previous years). They are much better riders and can handle the younger (horses).” Because the group was so good on the horses they were able to venture out into the endless freedom of a trail ride, and that comes with a unique difficulty. “You can’t control them (on the trail). If the horse is outside, it can run away.” The Survivor game splits the group into two teams, team red and team blue, with Wagner and Lonsberry each leading one side. Does it get competitive? “Oh yeah, it’s competitive. There is some big competition,” said Lonsberry. But Mantracker takes the cake among the attendees favourite games. “Mantracker, they can’t wait for it.” That game, based on the television show, sends that riders out on their horses, and Wagner rides out to find and wrangle them back in, before they make it back to the barn. Anybody who gets back safely gets some serious bragging rights. With the program now into its fourth year, the mother-daughter duo had lots of different things planned, but because it was so busy they weren’t able to get around to some of the activities. The popular camp can be difficult to get into, as Lonsberry noted there is

already a waiting list for next year’s. One girl at the camp this year has been to each previous camp. Lonsberry is a teacher at Weldon School in Bienfait, and Wagner has been a western Canada coach for 30 years, and she continues to teach four days a week. The camp has evolved quickly after the maiden camp fours ago. Lonsberry said they hadn’t done it before and weren’t entirely sure what to expect. The second year though, they added some crowd-pleasing games like Survivor and Manhunter. They don’t teach a lot of training during the camp, but Lonsberry said some of that knowledge gets passed on to the students naturally. As they ride the horses more, and become more comfortable on them, they learn some aspects of training just by riding. “To learn to ride, you learn about training.” But that’s not the focus, said Lonsberry. She noted that some of the girls, after going through the horse camp, get their own horses. Often their parents don’t quite know how to take care of a horse. “Some don’t know how to keep them properly,” she said, adding that she or Wagner will show them the things they’ll need to know. Sometimes that family’s horse will be kept in the barns at Lonsberry’s. One girl at the camp this year was riding her own pony, but the others rode horses supplied by Lonsberry and Wagner. That’s what keeps their numbers from swelling too much, because they just run out of horses to distribute. The horses at the camp are also fairly experienced, so it’s pretty easy for the girls to get on and start moving. They don’t have to train the horses. The camp closed with families attending the barns to see what the girls had learned that week. Individually each participant showed off her barrel-racing skills through a three-barrel course.

Homemade meals away from home by Tonaya Marr of The Mercury Baba’s Bistro is the newest addition to the Estevan restaurant scene, and owner Deedee Chomyk says they have something unique to offer the community. “Everything is homemade. Even our barbecue sauce. We make our own barbecue sauce. It’s right from scratch. We’ve got that sauce on our whiskey ribs. All our soups are made from scratch — I don’t mean out of a box. If we have turkey soup it’s from the turkey,” said Chomyk. The Bistro, which is located at 1210 7th street, features everything from perogies and cabbage rolls to a variety of desserts — all made in store. Chomyk pointed out that while she personally enjoys the occasional french fry, she has to go elsewhere to get them as her Bistro has no deep fryer, and no deep-fried foods. “If you have something

And we’re in a small enough place and they’re finding us,” she said. Chomyk, who lived in Prince Albert for 30 years before moving to Estevan, grew up making and eating the Ukrainian dishes being

served at Baba’s Bistro. She cites her love of cooking as the reason for opening the restaurant. “I really like cooking, I love cooking. I was always having 20-30 people over so I could make big meals. If you’re making cabbage

rolls, you want to make hundreds of them, right? So for years and year, I thought it would be nice to have something with real, homemade food,” she said. Since opening in June, Baba’s Bistro has received a warm welcome from the

Estevan community. So far, the favourites among customers have been the rigger’s feast meal and the creme brulee. “(Estevan has been) awesome, awesome. The feedback makes it worthwhile being tired. People

have been wonderful,” Chomyk said. The homecooked food isn’t the only feature unique to Baba’s Bistro; the decor, too, sets the restaurant apart. In addition to the expected tables and booths of a restaurant, the Bistro boasts a wall inlaid with logs that Chomyk brought with her when she moved to Estevan. “Literally we cut them down. That was going to be next year’s firewood. I don’t know if I’m ever going to get back up north again, so I brought them with me,” she said. “It was just a lot of fun, we had a blast putting it together.” Thus far, Chomyk said she has enjoyed interacting with the customers who come into the restaurant, as well as working with the Bistro’s staff. “I lucked out with staff. I have such wonderful people here, really, I’m so lucky. We have a lot of fun, we goof off a lot and they work hard.”

More support coming from Regina benefit concert The woes of the Village of Roche Percee and Saskatchewan’s southeast corner have struck a chord far and wide, as a benefit concert for the village is set for next Friday in Regina. Brad Johner, of the Midale-Macoun area, will be headlining. The concert is a freeadmission event, organized by the Regina group Witness Promotions, and all money raised will be handed over the Village of Roche Percee, said the group’s head and concert organizer Iris Williams. After reading about the flooding on The Mercury’s website, Williams said she spoke with Estevan Mayor Gary St. Onge, and he told her that Roche Percee was most in need of help. So she decided her group would focus their energies on the village. “It’s just awful,” she thought when she read about the flooding. “I thought, ‘This is Saskatchewan. We need to help these people.’” Sharon Wells, deputymayor of Roche Percee, has been invited as a special guest to the concert. “Having her there makes it very personal,” said Williams. She added that she spoke with Wells about the

Canadians perform well at the World Rowing Cup National LUCERNE, Switzerland - Tracy Cameron of Shubenacadie, N.S., and Victoria’s Lindsay Jennerich captured the women’s lightweight doubles event Sunday at the World Rowing Cup. Canadian rowers also captured silver and bronze medals, giving the team four overall in the competition.

Cameron and Jennerich, the 2010 world champions, won their race in a time of seven minutes 1.71 seconds. Great Britain was second in 7:03.81 with an American duo third in 7:04.81. “It’s always harder to be chased than to do the chasing, and when you come into the season as the world champions that’s always in the back of your

motorcycles, cars, spectators and guardrails. Rain, narrow roads and mass crashes have added to the mayhem. “That’s the harsh reality of this sport,” Hesjedal said. “We don’t have that luxury of a rink or a court or a field where it’s pretty controlled and you know what you’re getting.” *** VANCOUVER - Manchester City has brought a star-studded list of international talent for its North American tour, but the English Premier League team is involved in salary disputes with several players back home. The FA Cup winners will play the MLS Vancouver Whitecaps on Monday at Empire Field. Among the players included on Manchester City’s provisional travel roster are English internationals midfielders Gareth Barry, Shaun Wright-Phillips and James Milner. Other players include Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko; Italian striker Mario Balotelli; Spanish midfielder David Silva; Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong; and German defender Jerome Boateng Not making the trip is disenchanted striker Emmanuel Adebayor, while Brazilian club Corinthians has made a US$55.9 million offer to Carlos Tevez. Tevez is not on the North American tour. Adebayor told British newspapers it was “hurtful and insulting” that he found out in an e-mail he would not be making the trip to North America. International NEW YORK, N.Y. - A rookie wage scale and free agency for veterans appear to be the biggest stumbling blocks to ending the NFL lockout. Several sources requesting anonymity tell The Associated Press such key issues as splitting total revenues — the major reason for the dispute — the salary cap, fewer offseason workouts and the length of a new collective bargaining agreement are close to being completed. Owners and players prepared to meet again this week after two days of long negotiations last week. The sticky topics include limits

on rookie salaries and signing bonuses. Another is the number of transition tags for free agents, with right of first refusal. *** PHOENIX - Tampa Bay’s David Price withdrew from the all-star game because of turf toe, and four other starting pitchers were declared ineligible because they played Sunday. The Yankees’ CC Sabathia, the Rays’ James Shields, the Detroit Tigers’ Justin Verlander and the Philadelphia Phillies’ Cole Hamels all were knocked out because of their starts. Sabathia had been bypassed when rosters were announced a week ago, but replaced Shields when the Tampa Bay pitcher appeared Sunday. Replacing them as all-stars were the Yankees’ David Roberton, the Texas Rangers’ Alexi Ogando, the Seattle Mariners’ Michael Pineda and the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Kevin Correia. San Francisco infielder Pedro Sandoval will replace the New York Mets’ Jose Reyes, on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. *** SEOUL, South Korea - South Korean football officials will use lie detectors to root out match-fixing schemes. The K-League said in a statement Monday that polygraph testing will help prevent more match-fixing scandals from erupting and better investigate those implicated in future scandals. The K-League will also double the minimum yearly wage for league players to US$22,670 to lessen the temptation to take bribes to fix games, the statement said. The match-fixing scandal has rocked the 28-year-old K-League — Asia’s oldest professional football league — with government officials threatening to shut it down if any more games are fixed from now on. A former K-League player who allegedly worked as a broker was found dead in an apparent suicide in May. South Korean prosecutors have indicted more than 70 footballers, gambling brokers and others for alleged involvement in the scandal.

Estevan youth sports camps hampered by low registration Estevan’s sports camps are now underway but off to a slow start. Andrea Stelnicki, summer program co-ordinator for the Souris Valley Aquatic and Leisure Centre, is hopeful however, that things will pick up as the summer moves along. The youth camps, for ages nine to 14, began with cheerleading on July 4. With early low registration numbers, Stelnicki said they did get a number of last-minute registrations that helped the camp run more smoothly. Particularly for a cheerleading camp, high numbers are necessary because it is a team sport. For the individual sports, however, there are caps on registrants. For sports like skateboarding or golf, which happens to be the most popular camp there is a maximum number of spots available. The golf camp, scheduled for Aug. 16 is one that is still up in the air, but for weather reasons, rather than registration. Instructors for some of the camps are locals, where Stelnicki could find them, like for cheerleading, golf, BMX and skateboarding. Trainers filling out the other programs are coming from Regina and Saskatoon, and typically belong to provincial organizations for the discipline in question. She said the camps aren’t just about learning a sport, but most importantly they are about having fun. “(The kids) always have fun,” she said. “One of the things our instructors are aware of is the need for the kids to have fun, otherwise they won’t come back.” Some of the camps are for sports that don’t get the same attention that others receive. Triathlon, tennis and diving are all featured, though the diving camp,

File photo. scheduled for earlier this week was cancelled. “We try to have sports that aren’t available in Estevan.” Stelnicki asks that interested people register as early as they can, because a decision is made a week in advance of each camp on whether or not there are enough registrations to continue with the program. While last-minute registrations were still available for the cheerleading camp, she noted that same opportunity won’t always be something people can fall back on if the program has already been cancelled. “I’m not sure if (the lower registration) has to

do with the situation here. We’ve not really had a spring, but people are not really into summer yet.” She said sometimes they have received overwhelming registration numbers and sometimes not, but added that they try to accommodate everyone who wants to take part, whether they are entirely new to the sport or are looking to fine tune already developed skills. “We will start with the basic, right through to playing games. It’s about the development of skills over the course of the camp,” she said. The Saskatchewan Games, held in Meadow

Lake next summer, are looking for athletes to compete in the tennis and triathlon events, so those who check out the camps here may have a chance to see what they can do to challenge at the Saskatchewan Games. Stelnicki said if anyone is interested in pursuing that then there are people who will work with them, but the camps held here this summer are not meant to be competitive. Anyone interested in registering for one of the camps can do so by contacting the leisure centre or by visiting ActiveNet online. The next camp, triathlon, is expected to be held on July 19.

Riders not a welloiled machine One thing became very evident as the Montreal Alouettes were pulling away from the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the second half at Mosaic Stadium on Saturday, on their way to a 39-25 Week 2 romp: Greg Marshall did not inherit a well-oiled machine when he took over as head coach for this season, and it wasn’t simply a case of him taking over the wheel from his predecessor Ken Miller. No, this team has some issues as they sit at 0-2 but the issues don’t seem like anything they can’t overcome. The Riders share last-place with the BC Lions with identical 0-2 records while Edmonton leads the West Division at 2-0 and Calgary sits second at 1-1. What is this, 1991? As feared the Riders played far better against Montreal than they did in Week 1 (a 42-28 loss to the Eskimos) but they still lost. The team’s current weaknesses were exposed as the secondary was torched for five touchdowns by Anthony Calvillo (tying a career high), and their inexperienced receivers dropped passes left and right, killing drives. “I thought we did a good job in the first half, and I told them there would be ebb and flow, and there was in the first half,” Marshall said on CKRM’s post-game show. “I thought we’d do that in the second half but in the third quarter the conditions favoured them. We didn’t get them off the field. We dropped some passes and that didn’t help.” Giving theAlouettes the ball and the wind to start the second half proved to be the death knell for Saskatchewan. TheAls outscored the Riders 15-0 in the third quarter and choked

their opponents wind off in the fourth. Marshall’s next comment, to me, encircles what’s plaguing this team the most as they prepare for back-to-back eastern road trips (Week 3 at Hamilton and Week 4 at Montreal). “I told them after when you play a good team like this you have to play for 60 minutes and we didn’t do that. And I told them nobody’s gonna feel sorry for them. There’s a good team in that locker room, they just have to show it.” And therein lies the secret. After their Week 1 loss, Rider slotback Weston Dressler said the Roughriders were “out-worked”. The term hasn’t been used around here since the pre-Kent Austin days. After this week’s loss defensive back Chris McKenzie told reporters the club “lacked enthusiasm” coming out for the second half. Now that is inexcusable, but also correctable, you would think. The talent seems to be there but they’re not giving maximum effort. Everyone from the coaches to the players is admitting as much. The task facing Marshall is very clear; known for his all-business, take-no-prisoners approach, the first year head coach needs to put his stamp on this team and do it pronto. So far this team hasn’t played Roughrider football, but Marshall knows exactly what that is and what it takes. He needs to find out how to get there, and if/when he does, that’s how he’ll make his mark as a head coach in this league. (Rod Pedersen is the voice of the Riders on CKRM radio)

The Americans have lost their minds on spending Peering across the border just six miles to the south of my house, I wonder if there is something in either the air or water that has contaminated the brains of our southern neighbours. Surely they must be squirrelly, if you look at recent headlines. As I type this, discussions are on to raise the United State’s federal government debt ceiling,

Brian Zinchuk From the Top of the Pile otherwise the country is in real risk of defaulting on its debt. You think Ireland, Portugal, Spain or Greece had it bad? If the United States defaults on its debt, we’re talking fiscal apocalypse. How high is that debt ceiling? Just a measley

$14.3 trillion dollars. My desk calculator literally cannot fit that many zeros onto its screen. Where does this debt come from? Socialized health care? Not bloody likely. Nope, it comes from the idea that taxes are always bad, we can never raise them and that what the military wants, it gets. Right now, it’s got three wars going on, maybe four - Afghanistan,

Iraq (almost wound down, but not quite), Libya and Yemen. I remember reading a book about military aircraft written around 1984 by Bill Gunston. It noted that the way trends were looking for the cost of front-line fighter aircraft, in a few decades, the United States Air Force and Navy could buy one aircraft a year, and use it every other day and half a day on Sundays. The costs of both the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II are not far off that 30 year old projection. Yet they are buying hundreds of F-22s and thousands of F-35s. A most interesting blog on U.S. military items is Wired.com’s Danger Room. It recently reported on the over-budget new ships the U.S. Navy has begun to build, called the Littoral Combat Ship. It’s a funky trimaran hull, and looks out of this world. But because it has become so expensive, some cutbacks needed to be made. On the U.S.S. Independence, which was made out of aluminum

instead of steel like most ships, they cut back a little too far - and neglected to install a cathodic protection system. Now, a year old, the ship is literally corroding away into nothingness, at least around the engine mounts. But that’s OK if corrosion is making ships disappear, because the army is spending plenty of money developing giant frickin’ lasers mounted on trucks to make other things disappear, or at least fry. Unfortunately they don’t actually fit on trucks. Maybe they can use the one mounted on a 747 instead, the one that cost $5.2 billion. Then there’s Minnesota, whose government shut down July 1 and has no plans to re-open. I understand what a postal strike is. I’ve seen public sector unions go out on the picket line. But for the government of an entire state, or even nation, to ‘shut down?’ It’s becoming more and more routine. This is apparently because hard-headed politicians keep playing chick-

en, all the while running up the debt clock, in nearly all jurisdictions. The United States needs to have the wakeup call that Canada heard in the early 1990s. The federal government, and nearly all the provinces, realized they were rapidly going broke (kind of like the U.S. federal government is right now). They enacted substantial cutbacks and through some serious pain, turned their budgets around. In a few years, nearly all of Canada’s provinces, and the feds, were in the black. Former Saskatchewan Premier Roy Romanow used to talk about going to New York to deal with bankers to keep the province solvent. Most Canadian provinces, along with the feds, have backslid on that note on account of the recession. Saskatchewan is one of the few that has kept its head above water. Our governments had better relearn how to curtail spending again, lest we find ourselves in the same predicament the U.S. is now in.

New hospital policy on babies sharing mothers’ bed Provincial REGINA - A tentative deal has been reached that brings an end to rotating strikes by specialized health-care professionals in Saskatchewan. A news release from the health sciences union does not say how much is being offered by the employer, the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations. But union president Cathy Dickson says it represents progress from the offer made to the union a month ago. The employer offered a general wage increase of 7.5 per cent over four years — plus additional marketbased raises — while the union wanted a base wage increase of 14.5 per cent over four years. Dickson says the tentative agreement is the best that can be achieved. *** REGINA - The Regina health region says it’s developing a policy on babies sharing a bed with parents after the tragic death of a newborn. The new policy is among six recommendations to come out of a review done after the death of Cambria Tammie-Leigh Shuba at Regina General Hospital. Cambria went into respiratory distress while she was in bed with her mother and died March 20. Her parents say in a statement that the hospital has guaranteed them it will be implementing a no cobedding policy — meaning moms and babies can’t sleep together. The Regina General Hospital tries to keep babies in their mothers’ rooms to encourage bonding and uses guidelines introduced by Health Canada in 2000. National OTTAWA - Goodwill means good wages for thousands of Canadian charity workers. An analysis of tax filings by The Canadian Press has found salaries often run well into six figures — raising questions about how money raised in the name of charity is being spent. The Canada Revenue Agency keeps a database of all the country’s regis-

READY-TO-MOVE HOMES FOR SALE 1-877-854-5724 www.pioneerhomes.net

tered charities, which now number around 85,000. Charities must disclose how much their 10 highestpaid workers take home. There are around a million charity workers in Canada. The agency’s database shows more than 6,000 of them earned above $120,000 last year. A few hundred made over $350,000. Another 12,000 workers made between $80,000 and $120,000. And about 163,000 earned less than that. *** TORONTO - The Federal Court of Appeal has rejected an illegal immigrant’s bid to have her medical treatments covered under Canada’s healthcare system, saying it could undermine immigration laws and turn the country into a “health care safe haven.” The three-judge panel ruled against Nell Toussaint, a Grenadan citizen who came to Canada as a visitor in 1999 and settled in Toronto. Toussaint’s health began to deteriorate in 2006 and over the years, she suffered from a number of conditions, including uterine fibroids, blood clots, tumours and hypertension. Unable to pay her

medical bills, Toussaint applied to become a permanent resident in 2008 so she could be covered under Ontario’s health insurance program. She also applied for a temporary residence permit. But she didn’t pay the application fees and as a result, neither request was considered. International KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - The half-brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai has been murdered outside of his fortified compound in Kandahar city. Ahmed Wali Karzai, the political kingpin of the province, was shot early Tuesday. Zalmai Ayubi, the spokesman for the governor of Kandahar, confirmed that Karzai, the head of the provincial council was “assassinated.” He says more details would be provided at a press conference later Tuesday. Karzai was a polarizing figure in Kandahar, one often blamed for much of the corruption and political instability, which has gripped the province. *** TOULOUSE, France

- A lawyer representing the families of those who died in the crash of Air France flight 447 says a French judge has ordered the airline to pay US$176,000 in compensation to the next of kin of each of the passengers. Lawyer Marc Fribourg says the judge did not order Airbus to pay. The Toulouse, Francebased company manufactured the A330 aircraft used on the Rio-Paris flight, which slammed into the Atlantic Ocean on June 1, 2009, killing all 228 people aboard.

Fribourg said today the judge ruled “the link between malfunctions (on the aircraft) and the accident was not certain.” Initial information from the flight recorders suggests the pilots struggled to control the aircraft following faulty instrument readings. *** ALMATY, Kazakhstan - Kazakhstan’s Justice Ministry says 16 prisoners died when they blew themselves up after an abortive attempt to break out a jail in the southern town of Balkhash.

The ministry said in a statement Tuesday that the prisoners mounted an armed assault on a sentry post and then fled to a garment factory within the jail. One prison guard was killed in Monday’s attempted breakout. Justice officials say the prisoners died when they detonated an oxygen canister as special forces approached the building. Authorities say the prisoners were serving sentences for grave crimes, including robbery, murder and rape.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure who to credit it to. It just seems to be one of those timely forwards we get once in awhile. I hope you enjoy as I have. Here it goes ... There was a young woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So, as she was getting her things in order, she contacted her pastor and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes. She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read and what outfit she wanted to be buried in. Everything was in order and the Pastor was preparing to leave when the young woman suddenly remembered something very important to her. “There’s one more thing,” she said excitedly. “What’s that” came the pastor’s reply. “This is very important,” the young woman continued. “I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand.” The pastor stood looking at the young woman, not knowing quite what to say. “That surprises you, doesn’t it,” the young woman asked. “Well, to be honest, I’m puzzled by the request,” said the pastor. The young woman explained. “My grandmother once told me this story, and from that time on I have always tried to pass along its message to those I love and those who are in need of encouragement. In all my years of attending socials and dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, ‘keep your fork.’ It was my favorite part because I knew that something

better was coming ... like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something wonderful and with substance. So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder what’s with the fork? Then I want you to tell them: Keep your fork ... the best is yet to come.” The pastor’s eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the young woman goodbye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the young woman had a better grasp of heaven than he did. She had a better grasp of what heaven would be like than many people twice her age, with twice as much experience and knowledge. She knew that something better was coming. At the funeral people were walking by the young woman’s casket and they saw the cloak she was wearing and the fork placed in her right hand. Over and over, the pastor heard the question, ‘What’s with the fork?’And over and over he smiled. During his message, the pastor told the people of the conversation he had with the young woman shortly before she died. He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to her. He told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either. He was right. So the next time you reach down for your fork let it remind you, ever so gently, that the best is yet to come. Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. Cherish the time you have, and the memories you share. Being friends with someone is not an opportunity but a sweet responsibility. Cut this out, paste it on your fridge or send it to everyone you consider a friend. And always remember to keep your fork.

Artery Plugging Can Make Walking Painful DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please explain peripheral vascular disease. I have never heard of it, and neither have people I have asked. -- C.D. ANSWER: Peripheral vascular disease also goes by the name peripheral artery disease. Have you seen the TV ad where the young boy and his grandmother are walking through a store where there’s a display on peripheral artery disease? The boy asks his grandmother

if she has it. It’s extremely common. It’s the leg’s equivalent of heart artery disease. Both have to do with arteries clogged with plaque -- a buildup of cholesterol, fat and other materials. Pain on walking is the prominent symptom of this illness. The pain occurs because the working leg muscles aren’t getting enough blood. They complain by sending pain signals. Calf pain is common when the obstruction to blood flow is in a thigh artery. Stopping and resting relieves the pain. High blood pressure, a family history of this condition, a family history of heart disease, smoking, diabetes and increased cholesterol all contribute to it. The most important contributor is aging. The family doctor

can detect peripheral artery disease by noting a decreased pulse at the ankle. Greater evidence is obtained by comparing ankle blood pressure to arm blood pressure. The two should be equal. If ankle pressure is lower than arm pressure, the reason is a blockage in leg artery blood flow. Treatment is similar to treatment for obstructed heart arteries. Affected people have to lower their cholesterol, lower their body weight, lower their blood pressure, stop smoking, control blood sugar and stay active by walking to the point of pain, resting and then continuing to walk. Doctors usually also must prescribe medicines to lower cholesterol and to facilitate the passage of blood through narrowed arteries. Sometimes an operation on the clogged artery is necessary. Often this can

be done with a catheter that has a balloon tip. The catheter is threaded to the point of obstruction and inflated to open up the artery. Then a stent -- a metal device -- is placed to keep the artery dilated. The booklet on peripheral vascular disease gives the details of the illness and its treatments. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 109W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What can you tell me about medical foods? My doctor has put me on Limbrel to treat my osteoarthritis. He says it’s safe and has few side effects. After five days of use, I feel much better. -- F.G.

Voter abuse evident with Jeter selection Baseball fans did a pretty good job of voting for baseball’s starters in the annual Midsummer Classic, but one or two horrible selections are enough to suggest MLB should take the task away from the non-experts and give it to baseball writers and broadcasters or players. Ladies and gentleman, starting at shortstop for the American League, one of the worst infielders in the league, Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees. Boooooo!!! One gets the feeling that if the late Babe Ruth was somehow included on the ballot, fans would have him starting in right field. The American League team is New York-heavy, but that’s no surprise, given the population of the Big Apple and networks’ overcoverage of the A.L. East, which offers up the best rivalry in the majors (Red Sox vs. Yanks). But the annual all-star game is supposed to feature the best players and, quite frankly, Jeter, bound for the Hall of Fame, is not even close. He was great once, but he would rank in the lower half among shortstops this year. When the sport’s best gather in Phoenix for the game July 12, Jeter should be lounging on a beach in the Bahamas, or finalizing catering plans for his November wedding to movie star Minka Kelly. His only connection to the all-star game should be congratulations he sends to those who deservedly make the two rosters. Jeter is not one of those who deserves it, but he’ll be starting at shortstop because for many fans, all-star voting is mistaken for a popularity poll. Bob Uecker was

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist

popular, too, but the closest he got to an all-star game was the announcer’s booth. Jeter has lost his power (56 of his 68 hits through July 1 were singles, and he had but two home runs) and Father Time has taken away much of his range. Hit the ball to the left side of the Yankees’ infield and there’s a good chance Jeter won’t get to it. He was re-signed by the Yankees in the past off-season for sentimental reasons more than anything else. He is, after all, Mr. Yankee of the 2000s, and that’s fine. He’s just not Mr. All-Star and some other deserving American Leaguer — Asdrubal Cabrera of Cleveland, Jhonny Peralta of Detroit or even Yunel Escobar of the Jays — has been left out of the starting lineup because of it. Let the fans continue to cheer, but it’s time to take away their vote. The Jeter case is proof of voter abuse. • Comedy writer Jerry Perisho: “The LA Dodgers filed for bankruptcy protection. The Dodgers are losing so much money that Cincinnati fans have offered them the moniker of “Big Red Machine.” • R.J. Currie of sportsdeke.com: “After a tough match at Wimbledon, Maria Sharapova was asked to flash her engagement ring from Sasha Vujacic. Maria demurred saying it made her self-conscious. I’m thinking she was too tired to lift it.”

Steaks Burgers Roasts Sausage Marinades • Sauces Spices • Seasonings

• Currie again: “The Boston Red Sox recent 14-5 win over San Diego was the sixth time in 29 games they scored 14 runs or more. The Bosox are starting to look like the 1930 Yankees, only more Ruthless.” • Jerry Greene, ESPN.com: “Reports indicated the Cleveland Browns may make a bid for former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor in the supplemental draft. Oh, come on, he may have done some bad things but hasn’t he suffered enough?” • The Los Angeles Dodgers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and comedy writer Jim Barach says, “Who knew that the old Dodgers’ mantra of “Wait ‘til next year!” would have to do with trying to meet payroll?” • Headline at SportsPickle.com: “Los Angeles Dodgers file for last-place protection.” • Barach again, on Winnipeg causing a major reorganizing of the NHL’s divisions: “It would be the biggest realignment ever in hockey that didn’t involve a dentist.” • Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: Not news: A man at a Twins game sported a Joe Mauer jersey. News: He was shirtless — with “MAUER” and “7” shaved into his considerable back hair. Just be glad the guy

isn’t a big fan of Jarrod Saltalamacchia.” • Driver Danica Patrick, to The Des Moines Register, on flooring it through Iowa Speedway’s notoriously bumpy turns: “That took some ovaries to do.” • Another one from Perry: “Exlightweight champ Juan Diaz has quit the ring to attend law school at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. “In other words, he’s going from boxers to briefs.” • Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle, on the Vancouver Stanley Cup riot: “One cop was skulled by a brick, and several cops were bitten. Biting? Who invited the Alex Burrows Fan Club?” • Janice Hough, of leftcoastsportsbabe. com: “The Detroit Tigers retired the number of former manager Sparky Anderson, who died last year at the age of 76. Had he lived, however, Sparky might now have been considered too young and inexperienced for the Marlins job.” • Cam Hutchinson of the Saskatoon Express: “Is it just me, or has Brayden Schenn been with more teams in the last year than Paris Hilton?” Care to comment? By Samantha Weaver • After the release of Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic film “The Birds,” pet stores all over the country saw a sharp decline in the sales of pet birds. • You might be surprised to learn that during the first airing of the original “Star Trek” series, no episode ranked higher than No. 52 in the ratings. • According to the Guinness Book of Records, it was poor Donna Griffiths who suffered the longest sneezing fit ever recorded. On Jan. 13, 1981, the 12-year-old girl started sneezing, and she continued sneezing every day for more than two and a half years.

• I’m sure you’ve heard the term “dimwit” used as an insult, but, as it turns out, the word is more descriptive than derogatory. The human brain actually uses less power than a 100-watt light bulb. • A man named Patrick Hooligan lived in London in the mid-1800s. He was such a notorious troublemaker that his name is still used today to refer to ruffians and hoodlums. *** Thought for the Day: “He’s turned his life around. He used to be depressed and miserable. Now he’s miserable and depressed.” -- David Frost
