Nine-year-old Memphis White shows off the bike donated to him by Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation.
Telemiracle donates bike to local boy Memphis White, 9, has recently received a bike from Kinsmen Telemiracle, and he couldn’t be happier about it. “The handle bars are really easy to steer,” he said, showing off the bike
My name is Shelby. I am a little shy when I Àrst meet new people and situations, it takes me a while to warm up but once I do I am good to go. I think I am a Lab and Collie and maybe something else, I am a girl about one year old or younger.
My name is Ben, I came all the way from the east side of the Manitoba Border, a young man driving in from Nova Scotia seeking work in Estevan area picked me up wondering down the highway, I believe I am really lost...I am a senior, black and white with a docked tail..I know my commands, I am very obedient and I just love hanging out with the staff or out in the yard...
I am a Papillon/American Eskimo/Jack Russell, I am a male only 5-6 months old. I am tri colour, my dominant colour being white with some black and brown markings...I am a cutie but I would need some consistent training to be a good little fella, but I am very lovable.
Once again our Cat Farm Program is under way, for more information phone down to the shelter. We would like to send out a big Thank-you to the Grade 5 class at Pleasantdale School for the donation we received of over $300 of pet supplies, they raised this money through a bake sale and face painting.

he received a week ago. Memphis was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy when he was four years old. Despite his illness, which is only found in males and results in muscle degeneration and eventually death, Memphis is a happy, spirited boy. “He’s a character. He’s got a great sense of humour. He brightens up everybody’s day,” said Mandy White, Memphis’ mother. Normal pedal bikes are too difficult for Memphis to operate because of his muscle weakness. “He was made fun of, with the training wheels,” said White. Last year, the family was able to borrow a bike from Wascana Rehabilitation Centre that allowed Memphis the easy mobility he was denied by regular pedal bikes. “He could keep up. He’s never been able to pedal a bike, because of his weakness,” said White. “He went everywhere with it and he could keep up with us.” White was encouraged by employees from Wascana to apply to Kinsmen Telemiracle
Foundation for a bike for Memphis. When she returned to Estevan, she was approached by a local Kinsmen. “Dave Elliott had called me and said that he had talked to some people who had said that I wanted to put in an application. So I said, ‘Well a bike would be good.’ So Dave came here, and he did the whole application process with me and sent it off,” said White. “He kept in touch and he said ‘We’re going to get this child a bike’ and he did.” The bike will grow with Memphis, fitting him now at its smallest setting up until he is an adult. It allows him to keep up with his family and friends and gives him the mobility of children without the disease. White said that raising a child with muscular dystrophy can be difficult at times. She explained that simple tasks like climbing the stairs or getting into a vehicle can be very challenging.
“It’s a lot of help lifting,” said White. “They just don’t have the strength because it deteriorate; basically just the getting around.” White said that most people with Duchenne muscular dystrophy have a lifespan of 20 years. However, she is very optimistic and positive about Memphis’ future. “He’s my little scientist. He knows so much about bugs and rocks and everything,” she said, before expressing that she hoped Memphis would someday get to go to college. White pointed out that the Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation has money to give away to people that need it, like Memphis. She said that often people assume that if they have received a donation in the past, they can’t apply again. However, Telemiracle assured her that that is not the case and that, if someday Memphis needed a lift for a wheelchair, they could be there to help out. “If the need is still there, the money can still be there too,” she said.
school system for 20 years. I was fortunate enough to have a background that gave me some experience when I first started working here. And I love working with kids, so it’s the perfect combination. I love reading.
One-on-one with Jordan Baker Maureen Curtis How long have you been at the Estevan Public Library? Just over two years. I started April 13. What is your position/ role at the library? Children’s program coordinator. What programs do you run at the library? I run the regular programs all year long, such as Toddler Time which is 18-months to three-yearsold. And Story Time, which is three-years to five-yearsold. And then I started a new program last September called Baby Lap Time. That’s for pre-walker babies and their caregivers. It’s a 20 minute program. It’s a brief program, due to the attention span of babies, obviously. I read a story, we do finger play, it’s very interactive. So, the caregivers stay for coffee and cookies and stuff after and socialize. It’s kind of like a social event for the moms, too. There are a lot of new people coming into Estevan and they find that they like coming to the library and interacting. What’s the need to have programs for children and toddlers? It is a part of early literacy. Introducing your child as early as possible to reading, to books. It all helps with their readiness skills for reading. And it’s a good social aspect for the kids too. I also run a science/ space program, usually about once a month. It’s called Cool Kid Concoctions and we make all kinds of things. We even made homemade pumpkin pies one time for Thanksgiving. How did Cool Kid Concoctions begin? I pretty much started that after I started working here, a couple of months after I started working here so it’s been going on for two years now. That brings in a lot of kids. When creating new programs, do you go through forms and manuals, or do you come up with them up yourself? It’s a combination of both. The Internet is very helpful, and I do a lot of reading. A lot of it you just play by ear. I have a lot of experience back in Ontario where I’m from. I worked in the
What were you doing in the school system? I was a teacher’s assistant. In junior kindergarten and senior kindergarten. What sort of reception did Cool Kid Concoctions receive when you first introduced it? It was overwhelming. I started off taking 30 kids at a time and I found that that was a really high number. To me it’s important to give the kids a lot of one on one and if they get frustrated with something that they feel they can’t complete or they can’t do, it’s not fun for them. So I brought the numbers down on the most part to 20, depending on the skill level and the type of activity we’re doing. I’ll keep the numbers down a bit, just because you need more interaction, you need more one on one time. There’s measuring involved, there’s reading. I’ll have recipes up where they’ll read along with me. And also I like to put out a bunch of books that are theme-related too. And yeah, because the response was so overwhelming, that really gave me the push to keep it going, to keep trying different things. We’ve made flubber, silly putty, soap, play dough. Actually, in July we’re making homemade bubbles and spray chalk. How are you finding and choosing these activities? Google is my best friend. And I have a lot of resources that I brought from Ontario when we moved. And of course, in a library y o u have a lot of resources also. So t h a t ’s a blessing too.
ing on my calendar, I try to do it once a month. I might even call a Mother’s Day thing a Cool Concoction, if we’re making something for Mother’s Day for instance.
group all the time, everyday. The freedom to plan the programs I want to do, that I think will entice kids to come into the library, I think that’s the best part.
How do you evaluate the success of a program? I think the only time that I’ve had that happen is the one time we ran out of sugar. We were making cookie mix in a jar and we ran out of sugar. I underestimated the amount. But we had three things, it was Santa’s workshop and we had 30 kids and we were doing three different major crafts in that time period. I think the success is when I say to them, “Hey, are you guys having fun?” when I get a full turnout, or when people phone and cancel at the last minute and feel bad about it, but they’ve got a replacement for me. I think that pretty much sums up the success of your program, when they walk out with a smile on their faces. Next time I see them for another program, I’ll say “how did Mom like this?” or “how did you enjoy that?” and I get a very positive response. It’s really, really worthwhile.
Is there anything that you don’t like about the job? No, I don’t think so. I don’t think I’ve been here long enough to feel that way. No, I think it’s very, very positive working here in the library. Good staff, the staff help out if I have a big craft I have to have planned, the staff are more than willing to help cut out things, help do things. We work together.
What do you really love about this job? I love the fact that I can plan my own programs for the most part. The library is really good about giving me the opportunities to do that on my own. All the libraries in the southeast region will help each other out with ideas and stuff. I love the fact that I do my own advertising, for the most part. And I love working with kids. The nice part of it is that I’ve got a wide range. I’m not always in with a certain a g e
What brought you to Estevan? Employment for my husband. I had a good job and I was going to be there until I retired. I thought I would never have another good job, but I was fortunate enough to find this place at the library. Really fortunate, I really enjoy it here. Did you consider getting back into the school system? That was a big component when we first moved out here. I was really debating did I really want to go back into the school system, or did I want to branch out and try something else. I’m really glad that I took the opportunity to apply here because another really big benefit of getting on here is that I really increased my computer skills. You know, when you work in kindergarten you don’t really need heavy-duty computer skills. That was one thing I learned a lot, and I also do my own advertising. I’d never had to do that before. It’s a bonus and looks good on a resume. Was that a bit of a learning curve? It was, but a very positive one. It was scary at
THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JULY 1, 2011 Page 3 first, but we all have to take like to ask the older kids too, the jump sometime. I enjoy when we’ve done a program, it. H o w many kids do you usually get out? It’s always a full program. Usually there’s a waiting list. I’ll tell parents “sign up right away, as soon as you see it advertised, sign up.” So now, I’ve got a program on July 18 and it’s already full. Is that a monthly program? Music is a bit of a funny thing, but like most things, the more you work the more rewarding it is. Recent conversations with some Generation Xers has helped me realize something I kind of already knew: they don’t care for today’s music. In some ways I’m right there with them, I understand their frustration, but I just think they found the music they like 35 years ago and they’re tired of working to find and cherish something new. I like some oldies. I love David Bowie and Elton John of the early ‘70s, or Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. But there is some fantastic new music being recorded. You just have to put in the work. My rule of thumb is that if you like it on first listen, you probably won’t like it two years from now. All of the bands I’ve been listening to religiously the past few years, I really disliked the first time I heard them. Whether it’s quiet, lyric-based stuff from Elliott Smith or Sun Kil Moon, or something with a little more pop in it’s step like The Black Keys or Flogging Molly, they’ve each taken time to grow on me. For example, I was first introduced to Coheed and Cambria in my first year of college and couldn’t stand them. About a year and a half after finishing college, I started listening to them again and they blew me away. That took more than three years.
Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers Same thing happened with Pete Yorn. I heard a song of his I liked, explored the rest of his catalogue and was immediately turned off. Now I listen to that guy all the time. He can produce an uber-folky duet album with Scarlett Johannson and I’ll still listen to that stuff. He did it, and I do. The catchy hits of the summer that get lots of radio play have little longevity. It sounds good and polished, but there isn’t any substance. It’s easy to catch the beat right away at first listen, but it’s a 40-yard dash when I’m more interested in listening to a marathon. Pete Yorn, who I already listen to in any mood, came out with an album last year; naturally I hated it. Now I love it. I just had to peel away some of his not so spot on vocals to find that nougaty centre. I just checked out Flogging Molly’s new album from this spring. On first listen, there was one memorable track. The next day I listened to parts of it again, and now I will listen to that thing front to back. I expected
some trademark vocal belting from Dave King and when it didn’t happen, the album felt empty. In the second listen, I found those vocal bursts, they are just maybe not quite as powerful. The guy’s a 50-year-old punk rocker, so I will cut him some slack. Back to the Gen Xers. Sure there is the good old music that you listened to in your heyday. It works for you and it’s safe. I simply recommend when looking for new music, if you ever decide to do so, don’t listen to the radio. Head to the Internet, maybe spend a little time on YouTube. I understand that lots of good music came out of the ‘60s and ‘70s, but the same amount of great music is being produced today. There is just more music being produced, so the ratio of good to not-so-good is more slanted. That factor can make it daunting to navigate today’s music scene. The more work you put into finding and enjoying new music, the more rewarding it is when you finally find something you like. I think that’s why the flower children look down on today’s music, because they already worked hard learning to enjoy the music that spoke for their times. They don’t want to do any more work. Like anything else though, you have to get your hands a little dirty. Once you do, there’s plenty to enjoy.
Strike raises questions A strike by insurance workers with the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation has brought up an interesting question in the province. While it appears management and the union have hammered out a deal on their own, the question that needs to be asked is whether the Saskatchewan government was on the right track as Premier Brad Wall was suggesting he was prepared to call the member of the legislature back in order to introduce legislation that would have forced workers back to their jobs. A tentative three-year deal put Wall’s plan on hold, but one should be wondering why a government was even considering stepping into a situation between management and union when it’s crop insurance. We are all aware that certain jobs are reasonably considered essential services and thus certain measures must be taken to ensure those people stay on the job. Firefighters are a prime example as they are neither allowed to strike, nor to be locked out by management. That decision keeps firefighters on the job, but at the same time it is a barrier to traditional bargaining practices. With no threat of work stoppage, firefighters and management, at least in Saskatchewan often end up pushed to binding arbitration because there is little leverage to force a deal at the negotiating table. Premier Brad Wall had told the media at the legislature in Regina on June 23 that he would put an end to the labour dispute
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist over a contract that expired two years ago. Wall’s reasoning was that the union was walking out at time when they were most needed, citing the recent flooding and millions of unseeded acres that would be claimed through crop insurance programs in the province. Perhaps Wall needs to understand that a union doesn’t exactly accomplish much if they strike at a time when no one really cares if they are at work or not. Teachers, as an example, garner a lot more attention striking in June when it might threaten final exams and actually completing the year, than they would striking in September when students are just heading back for a new school year. Crop insurance workers knew there was some leverage in striking when their services were most required and they hoped striking would force a deal, one more in their favour. But is the work of crop insurance workers so important that our provincial government should have been considering forcing them back to work? While certainly important to farmers,
if crop insurance workers are suddenly critical enough to for the government to step between the normal processes of negotiations between the workers’ union and management, any other job could be deemed just as critical. While no union exists, one could argue gas station attendants are equally critical, probably more so, because we all need gasoline to travel. Food stores clerks are critical because we need to have access to groceries. We sometimes think jobs are critical, but find out they aren’t. The current situation with postal services is an example. With more and more cheques directly deposited, invoices paid online and important parcels moved via courier, the effect of postal workers being off the job has been far less inconvenient than most probably expected, and the union no doubt hoped. Certainly unions in Saskatchewan were vocal in their concerns that the Saskatchewan Party was too management friendly and cast a rather wide net in determining which workers are deemed essential, thus limiting access to the ability to strike in support of contract demands. The proposed handling of crop insurance workers by the Wall government will do nothing to alleviate that concern for unions, and only muddies the waters in terms of what should reasonably be deemed jobs critical enough to suspend normal contract negotiating tactics through legislation.

Breaking News: Mass Spider Killing Caused Spring Flooding There are lots of spiders in Estevan. Harmless, of course, but plentiful in number, and found all over the city. Lots of people don’t like spiders. People generally find spiders creepy and find the way they scurry and creep around disturbing. So, unfortunately, people have been killing spiders like crazy. Crushing them with their boots, or possibly flushing them down the drain in a Kleenex coffin. Spiders have been dying all over the place this spring, thanks to the aggression of the citizens of Estevan. We simply hate spiders and want to see them wiped out, despite their actually harmless nature, and the fact that they trap and eat other pesky insects in their webs. Unfortunately, in the aftermath of the spring flooding, the people of Estevan have been turning to the old superstition that claims that killing a spider will make it rain. Using this logic, floods that have ravaged the southeast this spring are no more than the karma-induced result of the deaths of millions of spiders in the Estevan area. How foolish were we, to brutally slaughter without consideration of the consequences? However, the massacre hasn’t ended. Rather than allowing spiders to live, the citizens of Estevan have continued their killing. It’s almost as though the people of Estevan are taking their anger over the flooding out of the spiders that they believe caused it. Spiders seem to be being run out of Estevan at an unprecedented rate. The results, should every spider leave, would be small. Maybe a few fewer mosquitoes, or an extra fly zooming hopelessly into your office window. How ridiculous, to blame the weather on a few in-

They are only spiders. And the people in southeastern Saskatchewan are only people, something those in Minot need to remember. I acknowledge that anger can make people do awful things, and I acknowledge that there is no concrete proof that these vandalisms are happening. Assuming they are happening, though, it is likely only a few moronic vandals who are giving Minot and Americans a bad name. However, I would like to point out that taking out your frustration on the unfortunate Saskatchewan residents who visit Minot is unfair, and clearly misdirected. Smashing the window in of a car in the mall parking lot does about as much good as digging a spider into the concrete with your heel. Stupid. Waste of time. Losing Saskatchewan visitors likely won’t have much of an effect on the Minot economy. But that handful of Minot vandals should remember that those who usually visit Minot travel through all the small towns on the way down. These small restaurants or Canadian-frequented gas stations certainly won’t be thanking you for your spiteful, self righteous quest to run Saskatchewan residents out of your city. So please, quit giving Americans a bad name.

What do you think of the current graduation ritual?
He She He She Said By: Jordan Baker
High school graduation is a big deal for lots of students and some parents. Celebrating the graduation is a tradition that dates back many years, so long in fact the first one that happened is probably undocumented. Whether people are ingrained to adopt milestones into our lives, or we’ve been programmed by our ancestors, people just like a little recognition for their toil. Celebrating a graduation is a way of telling our youth that they are an important part of society, and because of its timing in people’s lives, a way to welcome them into adulthood. Then somebody told me about this thing called a $500 grad dress. That’s excessive. A lot of people move on to more schooling after high school graduation. This schooling can get expensive. There are going to be lots of bills to be paid. I guess the student is maybe not the one who has to fork over the half-grand for the gown. And around here you can go work in the oilfield for the two months before university and pay off that grad dress and be set to cruise through a number of years of schooling debt-free. All right, with parents and grandparents chipping in for that dress, the cost can be split a number of ways to lessen the burden. Overall though, celebrating a graduation is a good way to show students they have accomplished something and a little recognition can go a long way. It’s a good feeling to complete a chapter of your life, knowing something new is ahead.
ALL MY CHILDREN Colby and Asher embarked on a new relationship. Maya lied to her friends about where she got her black eye. David pulled Jane/Erica into a kiss after she began to doubt his loyalty. Tad and Cara began having real feelings for one another. Jane told Erica that she slept with David. Madison adopted a fierce new look to go along with her new ad campaign at Fusion. Wait to See: Bianca goes on a date. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Thomas confided in Dayzee about how Stephanie convinced him to lie about what happened on the island. Meanwhile, Stephanie kept mum as she watched her son finally reunite with her favorite daughter-inlaw -- Taylor. Liam moved into the beach house after Amber was evicted. Brooke put aside her emotional pain to concentrate on her new charitable foundation. Amber nervously awaited the arrival of her baby’s
Graduation is a bit of a let down. A person is raised to believe that it’s fantastic and life changing, but honestly, it’s just a day stuffed in a hot arena, listening to people you probably didn’t ever really like talk about how the future is super bright and happy. Speeches, when kept short and to the point, are enjoyable, but when speech givers talk for 15 minutes, forgetting that half the crowd is drowning in sweltering graduation gowns, they can be a bit unpleasant. The graduation class’s photo slide show too can be a downer. For one, please keep videos under 10 minutes. Two, show more than just 25 kids. I’ve seen several slide shows that are supposed to show photos from classes of 200 kids, but after viewing the show, you can’t help but feel that maybe only 20 or 25 people are graduating. I get that you want to show off all of your friends and how cool you are with your coolers and lite beers hid slyly behind your backs, but the parents of the children not included in the show certainly feel slighted. The only part of grad I fully support are the dresses. Poofy, hot pink, ridiculous dresses. A girl only has a few opportunities to wear a spectacularly impractical dress, and graduation is one of them and it needs to be embraced. If on your grad day, you want to wear a confection of neon beading with 12 layers of multi-coloured tulle, that’s your right, and no one can mock you for it.

DAYS OF OUR LIVES Jennifer realized that Carly was taking drugs to mask her heartache over Daniel. Melanie gave Dario an alibi for the night that EJ was attacked. Rafe spent time with Sami instead of meeting up with Stefano. EJ asked Taylor to marry him after learning that Nicole was granting him a divorce. Quinn interrupted Chloe’s visit with her son. Maggie surprised Victor with a kiss. Wait to See: Stefano demands that Rafe be killed.
ONE LIFE TO LIVE Brody and Natalie decided to plan a future together for the sake of their child. Meanwhile, Brody listened to Marty’s tape and learned that John was the father of Natalie’s baby after all. Baz was interested in staying in Llanview if he could get to know Starr better. Cristian was intrigued by Rama’s past. Joey opened up to Kelly about his feelings for her. Wait to See: Viki realizes that Clint is hiding something.
GENERAL HOSPITAL Jason admitted to Sam that he really wanted to be a father. Steve had serious questions about the mistake Elizabeth made during Siobhan’s surgery. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Kent recorded Abby’s testimony saying that she was responsible for running over Tucker with the car. Meanwhile, Ashley tried to do damage control by insisting to Tucker that she -- not Abby -- was responsible for the accident. Tucker asked Ashley to marry him right away. Victor whisked Abby off to rehab. Sam asked Sharon out on a date, but then arrived late -- and drunk -- to pick her up. Wait to See: Sam and Sharon act on their passion.

One girl’s trash is another girl’s treasure
My late father (Graham Taylor) loved a good garage sale. He would drive miles to pick through odds and ends. Donna has won a one night stay at the Regina Inn and tickets to the Applause Never did a sale go by that he didn’t Dinner Theatre. return with a treasure chest (actually it was his red truck) bursting with gidgets Tickets are still available! and gadgets. Sometimes he would even Contact Janelle at 421-9258 return with the odd live animal, perhaps a dishwasher for a cool $5 or a much needed tea set. You never knew what would accompany him on his return. He loved garage sales and would often marvel at what people would sell. He would giggle away as he shared stories about buying a crystal water jug for $2. He would 11065MM01 tell us how he was sure the seller had no idea it was crystal and what a steal he got. Then, of course, there were the old books, that now line the shelves of my mother’s home. My father was a man who loved the written word. He knew his grandchildren loved to read as well and for him, finding a box of classics on a table for $10.00 was hard to pass up. I must admit, just last night my daughter cracked the cover of one of his book buys. She loves to read them and is reminded of him with every page she turns. Every once in awhile the kids are surprised with a hand-written note on the inside. Grandpa always made sure he documented things, even down to the smallest of events and here my kids are treated with yet another memory of a great man. While we were living in Wolseley (a few years ago), on one particular sunny Saturday morning there was a garage sale in town. My dad was up early and ready to beat the crowd because he knew it was going to be a good sale. The lady hosting the sale had three children, so my father new that there would be kids’ toys and more. He wanted to dive in and make a few purchases that would put smiles on his grandchildren’s faces. That morning, my mom and I stayed home and let my dad have his fun. After about 30 minutes of being away we heard the kitchen door open. There was laughter and the kids were anxious to see what grandpa had bought. He pulled out toys and trinkets and of course, books. There was one purchase that seemed a little odd, almost like the saying “one of those things is not like the other.” He had bought a pair of mukluks for $1. He pulled the MukNEW FOR 2011! presentation ceremony and presented them to my daughter Sophia. You see, my father knew how much Sophia loved fashion. He saw something in these used Mukluks that said “Sophia.” To my surprise my daughter squealed with excitement, wrapped her arms around her grandpa’s neck and thanked him over and over. Now, fast-forward three years and these well used Mukluks have been, since the first day of receiving them, her everyday shoes. She has been stopped by the most fashionable women in shops and on the streets of many cities to ask where she purchased them. Mothers at school comment on her style and how much they like them and girlfriends ask to borrow them. Who would have guessed that a pair of $1 Mukluks bought from a garage sale could create such conversation and in some cases even coveting. Recently, our family travelled to Edmonton to attend our son’s soccer tournament. Between games we braved the West Edmonton Mall for some retail therapy. While shopping, my daughter was (once again) stopped in her tracks by a fellow female shopper and was asked where she got her mukluks. She responded by saying, “My grandfather bought them for me for $1 at a garage sale.” The girl’s face flashed with shock and responded by saying, “I’ll buy them from you for $50,” To which Sophia replied by saying, “No thank you, I really like them.” We parted ways and once again marvelled at the lure of these mukluks. We carried on shopping and an hour later bumped into the same girl again. This time she greeted Sophia with, “OK, I really want those mukluks. Can I offer you $100 right now and you can go and buy any new shoe you want?” Sophia graciously replied, “Thank you but no thanks, these are really special to me.” We parted ways and again we laughed and talked about the conversation surrounding the hand-made footwear. Who would have thought that my father’s $1 purchase at a garage sale would create so much conversation. As her mother, I’m not sure that it’s the mukluks that really shine, rather I believe it’s the beautiful girl that walks in them that gives them their lustre. These mukluks are special because they were the last gift my father ever gave my daughter before he passed away. The gift had almost no monetary value to them but it was a gift from the heart. My father SAW who my daughter really was, he took the time to know her and now through these $1 mukluks and the attention they bring, she is reminded every time she wears them how much she was and is loved; how her grandfather saw the real Sophia and that is a gift that no one can buy, no one can ever take away or touch because it’s locked in a secret place in her heart. One girl’s trash truly can be another girl’s treasure.

Saskatchewan residents asked to watch for threatened species PROVINCIAL REGINA - Residents of Saskatchewan are being asked to keep an eye out for a beautiful killer. The Loggerhead Shrike is considered a threatened species and makes its summer home in the province’s southwest. The conservation group is enlisting the public’s help because it’s trying to keep track of where the Loggerhead is nesting so it can be protected from land development. Rebecca Magnus of Nature Saskatchewan says the Loggerhead is also known by its colourful nickname, the Butcher Bird. It’s a predatory songbird that hunts grasshoppers, beetles, garter snakes, mice, voles, frogs and sometimes other birds. NATIONAL NEWMARKET, Ont. - A York Regional Police officer has died after being struck by a vehicle and trapped underneath it during a traffic stop east of Newmarket, Ont. Police say the male officer stopped a vehicle at Herald Road and Highway 48 in the town of East Gwillimbury at approximately 4:50 a.m. They say the officer was struck by a vehicle and pinned underneath it. He was taken to South Lake Regional Health Centre where he died of his injuries. At least one person has reportedly been arrested. *** VANCOUVER - A Federal Court judge has ruled against three Canadian companies who sold knockoffs of high-end fashion accessories, ordering them to pay Louis Vuitton and Burberry a combined total of about $2.5 million. Vancouver-based companies Singga Enterprises Inc. and Carnation Fashion Company, along with Altec
Productions of Toronto, were accused of importing, manufacturing and selling handbags bearing Louis Vuitton and Burberry logos. Judge James Russell concluded all three companies were involved in largescale trademark infringement that spanned several years, and Singga and Altec were also working together, with Singga receiving commissions for directing customers to Altec. *** SWAN HILLS, Alta. - Officials estimate a burst pipeline in northwestern Alberta has leaked 1,000 barrels of oil and water. The spill and a subsequent explosion happened Sunday at a Pengrowth Energy Corp. (TSX:PGF) facility near Judy Creek and the town of Swan Hills. The Energy Resources Conservation Board says 97 per cent of the spilled liquid is water and 3 per cent is oil. It is describing the spill as minor. Cleanup of the surrounding area is ongoing. The line has been shut down, but the company’s main production facility continues to operate. INTERNATIONAL MOSCOW - Russian Mission Control says the International Space Station’s crew has briefly taken seats in escape capsules due to a close encounter with space debris. Mission Control spokesman Valery Lyndin said the six crewmen spent about half an hour Tuesday in two Soyuz escape capsules docked at the station before the space junk passed by without jeopardizing the station. The station periodically faces close encounters with debris, and engineers normally adjust the station’s orbit to reduce the probability of impact. If monitors fail to spot the space junk in time to perform the manoeuvr,

the crew is ordered to board the capsules. *** The Security Council has extended the mandate of the 19,000-strong U.N. peacekeeping force in Congo for a year, saying any force reduction should depend on ending violence in the volatile east and improving the ability of the Congolese to protect civilians. A resolution adopted unanimously Tuesday said future changes to the force should also be based on the government’s consolidation of authority throughout the country. Last month, Congo’s minister for international and regional co-operation, Raymond Tshibanda, told the council the government wanted the U.N. force to be gradually withdrawn, saying the security situation has
been stabilized in nearly all parts of the country. *** WASHINGTON - A study released Tuesday says the world’s climate is not only continuing to warm, it is also adding greenhouse gases even faster than in the past. In fact it’s been more than 300 months since the average global average temperature was below average. The annual State of the Climate report said 2010 was tied with 2005 as the hottest year on record, worldwide and added that the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide increased faster than it has in recent decades. Peter Thorne of Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites called the finding “a clear and unmistakable signal from the top of the atmosphere to the depths of the oceans.”

By Samantha Mazzotta Patching Carpet Q: I’ve got a section of carpet that our cat used as an unofficial litter box more than once in the past couple years. I’ve cleaned the heck out of it and most of the smell is gone, but the area is stained darker than the rest of the carpet, and our cat still sniffs around it hopefully despite it being soaked in cat repellent. Can I replace it without creating a worse eyesore? -- Dan H., Christmas, Fla. A: If you have some leftover scraps or sections from when the carpet was installed, you can replace that stained section with the exact same type of carpet, which usually creates the best match (as long as the rest of the carpet isn’t too old, stained or faded, in which case you may want to consider replacing the entire carpet). If you don’t
have extra scraps, never fear -- take an unstained scrap of the carpet to a carpet specialty store to find the closest match. You’ll also need to replace the padding underneath the section, as cat urine can soak all the way through to the padding (and sometimes the underlayment), thereby preserving the pungent odor for many years and serving as an olfactory signpost for your cat -- and any other curious pet. If the stain is less than 3 inches in diameter, consider getting a carpet patch kit that includes a circular cutter. This will allow you to cut out the stain and then cut a patch that is exactly the same size and shape. If the stain is bigger, use a box cutter to trim the stained section plus an inch or two beyond the stain. A metal or wood ruler will help you make a straight cut. Cut away the padding in the section as well. Take the padding and carpet section to the carpet store to match both the color and type of carpet, as well as the correct type and thickness of the padding. Back at home, measure
and trim the new padding and carpet to fit the cut-out section as closely as possible. Tack the padding in place with either a bit of carpet glue and/or staples. Double-check the fit of the new patch, then spread carpet glue over the bottom of the patch, as well as a light bead under the edges of the carpet surrounding the hole. Carefully press the carpet patch into place. Making sure no glue is on your fingers, rough up the carpet pile to hide the edges of the patch. Allow the glue to dry for about half a day, then vacuum. HOME TIP: Don’t

Chara captain to meet with Montreal police NATIONAL MONTREAL - Two weeks ago, Zdeno Chara hoisted the Stanley Cup as captain of the Boston Bruins. Now the big defenceman will have something else on his hands: a meeting with Montreal police. Montreal cops have announced they intend to question Chara in the coming weeks — but they won’t say when or where they’ll do it. A probe into Chara’s hit last March that sidelined Montreal forward Max Pacioretty and sparked demands for a crackdown on hockey violence is nearing completion. Pacioretty, who suffered a concussion and a cracked vertebra, is now recovering. A police spokesman says Chara is the final person they need to speak with to complete their investigation; after that, the Crown will decide whether to press charges. *** Canadian Ryder Hesjedal and Christian Vander Velde lead a strong Team Garmin-Cervelo squad for the Tour de France. Hesjedal had a breakout Tour last year, finishing seventh in the absence of the injured Vander Velde. The American has twice finished in the top 10 at the Tour. The 29-year-old from Victoria moved up the rankings after Vande Velde crashed in the second stage. *** TORONTO - Ed Belfour, Doug Gilmour, Mark Howe and Joe Nieuwendyk will form the next Hockey Hall of Fame class. The four former NHLers were chosen by the Hall’s 18-member selection committee on Tuesday. Belfour was in his first year of eligibility while the other three had endured a wait.
The induction ceremony will be held in November.
order to meet cash flow needs, including a Thursday payroll deadline. Commissioner Bud Selig claims in the filing that his office can provide a loan on better terms, and argues that the court should reject McCourt’s financing proposal because it compels the team to sell valuable future broadcast rights to meet current expenses and to provide money for McCourt’s personal use. *** GLENDALE, Ariz. - The Phoenix Coyotes are looking for another buyer. The NHL team released a statement one day after reports that Chicago businessman Matthew Hulsizer had withdrawn his offer. “The city of Glendale and the National Hockey League continue to negotiate with other interested parties to secure new ownership for the Phoenix Coyotes,” the team said in its release on Tuesday. “The objective continues to be to transition ownership of the club to an interested purchaser in the coming months.” Hulsizer ended his bid for the financially troubled Coyotes after failing to work out a new arena lease with Glendale. The city recently committed US$25 million for the second year in a row to cover losses and keep the team playing at Jobing.com Arena for the upcoming season.
INTERNATIONAL NEW YORK, N.Y. - Floyd Mayweather Jr. says he never accused rival fighter Manny Pacquiao of taking steroids and that he’s still open to fighting the Filipino icon. Mayweather made the comments during a stop in New York on Tuesday to promote his Sept. 17 fight against welterweight champion Victor Ortiz. The fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be the first for Mayweather in a year and a half. Most of the news he’s made between fights has been outside the ring. Mayweather is being sued in federal court for defamation after allegedly accusing Pacquiao of using performance-enhancing drugs. He also faces felony charges stemming from a domestic argument, and misdemeanour harassment and battery charges, among other things, in separate cases. *** WILMINGTON, Del. - Major League Baseball is objecting to the bankruptcy filing by the Los Angeles Dodgers, accusing team owner Frank McCourt of siphoning off more than US$100 million in club revenue and driving the Dodgers into a liquidity crisis. In papers submitted in Delaware bankruptcy court Tuesday, the league objected to the Dodgers’ request for authorization to enter into a $150-million financing arrangement with a group of lenders in Call Bell Medical and ask about our Botox Groupon!

Summer is the season for a variety of beautiful fruits at great prices. If you’ve purchased more than you can possibly eat, the best thing to do is to preserve the rest. A great way to preserve extra fruit or fruit with bumps, bruises or knots is to make fruit leather. Fruit leathers, sometimes referred to as fruit roll-ups, are believed to have first been developed in the Middle East. Fresh fruit was cooked and mashed. Then the puree was poured onto muslin cloth and put through a process that allowed the fruit to dry in a thin sheet. The result was a preserved fruit that when dried has a “leathery” appearance that is firm to the touch
and lasts a long time. The finished product was cut into shapes and placed into jar for storage. Fruit leather does not require refrigeration and is the perfect snack for long trips. Making your own fruit leather allows you to preserve the fruits of summer and avoid the preservatives or added sugars found in commercially packaged fruit roll-ups. The National Center for Home Food Preservation at University of Georgia Cooperative Extension has helpful directions for making homemade fruit leather: 1. Use 2 cups of fruit for each 13- by 15-inch fruit leather. Select ripe or slightly overripe fruit, and wash it in cool water. Remove and discard the peel, seeds and stems. Cut the fruit into chunks. Puree
the rolls in plastic to keep it fresh. Cookie cutters can be used to cut out shapes that children will enjoy. Store the cut-out shapes in an air-tight, resealable plastic bag. Fruit leather will keep up to one month at room temperature. For storage up to one year, place tightly wrapped rolls in the freezer. Line a 13- by 15-inch baking pan with rimmed sides or 2 small baking sheets with rimmed sides with food-safe plastic wrap, being careful to smooth out wrinkles. Do not use waxed paper or aluminum foil. 4. Spread the pureed fruit evenly, using a spatula, until about 1/8inch thick on the prepared baking pan. Avoid pouring puree too close to the edges of the pan to make it easier to remove. 5. Drying time in an oven is about 6 to 8 hours, depending on the size of the pans used. Larger fruit leathers take longer to dry. NOTE: Fruit leather dries from the outside edge toward the center. Test for dryness by touching the center of the fruit leather. No indentation should be evident if the fruit leather is completely dry. 6. When dry and while still warm, peel the fruit leather from the plastic and roll it into a log. Allow the fruit leather to cool, slice it into sections, and rewrap

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JULY 1, 2011
Report from the Legislature Premier Brad Wall and I recently toured some of the communities in Estevan and area that have been hit hard by extensive Áooding. We met with local ofÀcials from the City and RM of Estevan and the Village of Radville and toured Áood areas on Monday. In order for us to get an extensive, Àrst-hand look at the Áood damage, we visited many homes and businesses and spoke with people and families who shared their stories. As Premier Wall pledged, we will be at your side doing everything we can to support you and your family so that you can get through this challenging time. Our government has been blessed with good fortune and that has enabled us to balance our budgets and keep money in our rainy day fund so that we can support you in challenging times such as these. Here in Estevan, Emergency Operations Centers have been established and a Recovery Service Center is also set up at the St. Joseph’s Hospital (east entrance by Longterm care) and will be open until June 29, 2011 or longer if needed. Government staff and volunteers are also on site to provide assistance to affected areas. While many people are dealing with homes and basements full of water, about 400 people were evacuated from the city’s trailer court on the weekend. So far, approximately 600 people have registered with the emergency shelter. Others were able to stay with either family or friends or found other accommodations. As the Souris rises, it is expected to approach the Estevan water treatment plant and the city’s sewage lift station, but luckily both are being protected with dikes and are expected to continue normal operation. After last year’s historic Áooding, our government made improvements to the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) which will now beneÀt communities affected by Áooding this year. PDAP provides Ànancial assistance for essential, uninsurable property caused by natural disasters like Áooding and under the enhanced plan, principle residence owners can now claim $240,000 instead of $160,000. Maximum assistance for businesses owners, non-proÀt organizations, boards, charitable organizations, and owners/ operators of primary agricultural operations was increased to $500,000, also up from $160,000. Our government also dropped the deductible on individual assistance claims from 20 per cent to Àve per cent. We also told ofÀcials during our tours that our government is very interested in hearing any of their suggestions to make the program even more effective and responsive. For more information on PDAP and how to apply, please call 1-866-632-4033 or go to: http://www.cpsp. gov.sk.ca/pdap/ When Premier Wall saw the extent of the damage here, he decided to not attend this year’s Western Premiers’ Conference in Yellowknife. Saskatchewan families come Àrst and it is important the Premier be able to closely monitor the Áood situation, and keep the federal government updated with the latest information. I have visited all Áooded areas and evacuation centres in my constituency, and it is heartbreaking to see and hear about so many homes damaged and memories washed away. I also witnessed the admirable composure, resilience and kindness of Saskatchewan people. Spirits have been lifted by the hard work, dedication and support from community members, volunteers and organizations, who have rushed to the aid of Áooded communities, eager to help in any way possible. I cannot thank you enough for your commitment – your dedication is just another example of the way Saskatchewan people are. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or any other provincial topic, please don’t hesitate to contact either myself or Rosalie at the ofÀce at 634-7311.

stomach, it must go through an opening in the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the chest from the abdominal cavity. That opening is the hiatus. A hiatal hernia is a bulging of part of the stomach through the hiatus and into the chest cavity. Many times, a hiatal hernia causes no symptoms and needs no treatment. -- an upward spurting of acid and digestive juices from the stomach into the esophagus. That brings on heartburn, a common problem with many treatments. People without such a hernia also develop GERD. Here are some tips to handle heartburn. Lose weight, if need be. Don’t eat within three hours of going to bed. Elevate the head of your bed using blocks that are 6 to 8 inches tall and placed under the bedposts. This keeps stomach juices in the stomach while you sleep. Sleep on your left side for the same reason. Don’t wear constricting garments around the abdomen or too tight a belt. Take antacids as needed -- Tums, Rolaids, Mylanta and Maalox. Eliminate any food that gives you heartburn. Usual offenders are citrus fruits, tomatoes, onions, spicy foods, fatty and fried foods, chocolate, carbonated beverages, mints and caffeinated drinks. If these steps don’t solve the heartburn problem, try medicines called acid blockers: Tagamet (cimetidine), Zantac (ranitidine), Pepcid (famotidine) and Axid (nizatidine). In low doses, all of these can be purchased without a prescription. The next step is medicines that turn off acid production. Prilosec (omeprazole) doesn’t require a prescription. The prescription drugs are Prevacid, Nexium, Aciphex, Protonix and Dexilant. If necessary, surgical procedures can correct hiatal hernias. The booklet on hiatal hernias explains this common condition in detail. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 501W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475.
