Bruin ice team to be featured this season

Expect a different atmosphere at Bruin games this season. Not only will the Estevan Bruins be playing in a new arena, the club will also be introducing its first ever Steam Flo Ice Team. “A lot of the larger franchises in the WHL and NHL have ice teams, and we want to make every game in Spectra Place like a show. We want to make it exciting,

and we want people to come back, not just for the hockey but also for the experience of being at the game,” said Becky Tait, operations manager for the Estevan Bruins. The ice team will be in charge of pumping up the fans in the crowd, as well as providing entertainment on and off the ice through contests, trivia and giveaways. As a member of the ice team, one will not be expected to attend every home game. Tait said they hope to hire eight young people, and that only four, plus the ice team leader, will be asked to be at each game. “We’ll work around their schedules. We know that many young people are involved in lots of extra-

curricular actives and we’ll do our best to accommodate everyone,” said Tait. Tait pointed out that an ice team position is a great entry on a resume because it shows potential employers that team members are selfmotivated and outgoing, two very desirable traits that are likely to put them ahead of other applicants. The Estevan Bruins Hockey club is currently looking for outgoing, personable young people who would like to get involved and make the games exciting. Interested applicants need to apply by Monday, August 1 by sending their applications to Tait at becky. tait@estevanbruins.com, or by fax at (306) 634-9398.

Money Problems? Kathryn Roberton, the Estevan and Area Literacy Group co-ordinator, leads a discussion on transportation during Talk Time. The weekly session is available to help recent immigrants get a better understanding of the English language.

Learning English is key for Estevan’s immigrants Adults hailing from all over the world come to Talk Time to learn English. The weekly group session is organized by the Estevan Area Literacy Group (EALG) and is meant to help those with varying degrees of fluency become more proficient in the local tongue. During the sitting on Monday evening at the library, 13 adults attended, originally from China, Germany, Mexico, Pakistan, South Korea and Ukraine. They are now all living and working in the area, though some need to improve their English skills to help acquire jobs, or move up in their work. Kathryn Roberton, EALG co-ordinator, said the meetings are about learning about the community as much as they are about mastering the language. During the Monday meeting, the group dealt with transportation, going over the keywords and how questions and answers about traveling are structured. They also covered local things like where they can find bus stops in Estevan and how many cab companies service the city. “One of the reasons a lot of them don’t know some of the words is they haven’t used the service,” said Roberton. “Some of them didn’t know where the bus station was in Estevan. If they knew that there was a way to Regina without a car, that could

be very helpful to some of them.” She said that’s why they slip in what she calls “settlement information,” which is meant to help these people, who often are fairly recent immigrants to the country, become adjusted to the area more quickly. Giving a real-world example of the language also helps with memory. “Things like that help people remember better, if you have something solid to connect it to.” That means a lot of the words they learn are ones that will help them immediately in day-to-day conversation. Roberton said she finds out exactly what certain students need to learn, for their jobs or in their lives. She noted that they had just finished one section before a German family joined the group. The mother is training to be a school-bus driver, and so the section on transportation is an important one to help her get a job. She said the driving skills are there, but she needed the vocabulary skills necessary to communicate with the children. “It’s useful to the other students too, but it’s a subject we picked because one of the students needed it really, really badly.” The students had a simple conversation to carry on with their neighbours in the group, in the

form of a question and answer. One would ask a pair of questions, while the other replied with the answers. The questions asked where they were going this weekend and how they were getting there. The answers gave each student the leeway to come up with their own destination and form of transportation. “If you talk to them individually, (that’s) something that intimidates a lot of them, especially having those conversations with other Canadians. If I get them started here, even if it’s something basic, it gets them building up confidence.” The Monday group is for beginners in English, where Roberton said she does a lot of “practical” language, but she also heads a group on Thursdays for more advanced students. The Thursday-afternoon group allows her to do more basic grammar, she said. Many of the more advanced students are working jobs that don’t always allow them the time to get to a meeting, so she’s added a Tuesday evening drop-in session for those who are more able to work on their own. “(It’s the) people that I can send off to a table to work by themselves, and then they can come back and I can correct what they’ve done. There are a lot of advanced students in Estevan who say, ‘I want to prepare for the Test

For all of your local news, check out: www.estevanmercury.ca

of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL),’ or ‘I need to really improve my English so that I can write better reports and try to move up in my job.’” She said their English is generally pretty good and understandable to most Canadians, but it maybe isn’t quite where they need it to be in order to get to where they want to go. Often Roberton’s students begin as fairly recent immigrants to the country, but she said she does have “success” stories of some of her students, who came into her classes early on, moving on to other things.

Comic-Con is the pop-culture convention for the unpopular. I don’t mean to ridicule or look down on the attendees of the annual convention in San Diego that was held last weekend. While the convention may have been the domain of the stereotypical geek at one time, it is now a safe place for everyone to unleash their inner fanboy or girl. There are lessons to be learned by the people who frequent Comic-Con year after superhero-costumed year. Namely, it’s OK to be a nerd. A giant nerd. One who dresses up like their favourite movie/video game/comic book character and thinks the d3o material feels great against the thigh. I am a nerd. I don’t dress up like characters, and I’m pretty socially together, but I have read all The Amory Wars comics, and eagerly awaited the release of the next volume, which happens to have just come out. So I understand nerd. Comic-Con is to nerds what the Gay Pride Parade is to homosexuals. It’s a chance to be as open about your passions as you can and be surrounded by those who accept you for who you are. Many nerds may feel they

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers need to cover up their nerdity, but when Comic-Con rolls around, you can be immersed in a wave of 130,000 other people who take Star Wars way too seriously. It doesn’t matter what your day job is or that you live in the “respectable” neighbourhood in town. What the people at Comic-Con are celebrating is pop culture. Everyone is devoted to some pop culture niche, but not everybody wishes to make public how much they enjoy brandishing Indiana Jones’s whip. They might not feel comfortable showing off their grasp of the Klingon language at a dinner party. I would love to go to down to San Diego sometime for this event, and because I wouldn’t dress up, I would be in the minority. I would be the weirdo outcast who ventures from booth to booth, sidestepping the le-

gion of Stormtroopers, escorting a prisoner Wookie to the food court. The convention, with its modest roots, now has hundreds of exhibits and has become a major launching ground for some of the biggest franchises. This year, two of Hollywood’s big summer blockbusters premiered at the convention: Cowboys & Aliens and Captain America. The $60-billion a year video-game industry considers this one of the best launching sites for some of its biggest franchises, second only to the Electronics Entertainment Expo. So Comic-Con isn’t just for fanboys anymore. It’s a legitimate industry trade show, with women dressed up as blue aliens and men dressed like Spiderman. And nobody will bat an eye. These people dressed to the nines in these perfect costumes are greeted warmly and enthusiastically by everyone there, from the equally extravagant dressers to the vendors in their T-shirts. This sub-culture of comic-book readers and video-game players is no longer so sub. Comic-Con makes nerd cool, and that’s awesome.

Investment was a wise move Government is usually more efficient at patting themselves on the back for spending our money than they are at determining the best places to actually invest those dollars. Build a chunk of highway, or pay for a bridge, or invest some dollars in a hospital or school, and there will be a press release sent out, if not a full-fledged press conference to reaffirm the investment previously outlined in a budget somewhere. Once the project is complete there is an obligatory ribbon cutting, which is simply a media photo opportunity, and at times is actually rather ridiculous, like the realignment of a stretch of highway. Yes it has happened. I was there wearing the required safety helmet, which would no doubt have been important had the semi that breezed past during the ribbon cutting hit us. In most cases it’s government, regardless of political stripe, getting some publicity for doing their job. There are however times government does need a pat on the back for doing some things which, while the right thing, may not be expected. Recently, federal MPs and the Saskatchewan government joined together for an announcement which went under a lot of people’s radars, although it was an investment, which could be vital to agriculture and to keeping the world fed. The two levels announced more than $5.6 million in research funding which is targeted at developing new wheat varieties for Canadian farmers. The Government of Saskatchewan is providing $1.5 million through its Agriculture Development

Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist Fund. “The Government of Canada is investing in science and research to create jobs, economic growth and improve the quality of life of Canadians,” SaskatoonHumboldt MP Brad Trost said in a release. “These investments will help farmers and others in the agricultural industry by increasing the diversity of high quality wheat produced in an environmentally sensitive and sustainable manner.” The money is being invested in a project managed by Genome Prairie and is part of the $8.5 million Canadian Triticum Advancement through Genomics (CTAG) project. It will also represent Canada’s contribution to the new international sequencing effort led by the International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium (IWSWG). Farmers are becoming keenly aware that mapping crop genomes are becoming critical in terms of future crop development. It is an area that the Prairie Oat Growers Association is investing dollars in to produce that crop. Of course wheat has the potential to have a greater impact, since wheat is a far more significant crop than oats. “Wheat is a staple food crop, contrib-

uting approximately $4 billion annually to the Canadian agriculture industry,” detailed a backgrounder on the Canadian Triticum Advancement through Genomics (CTAG) Project. “Wheat production comprised more than 20 per cent of Canadian farm crop income during 2005-2009 (Statistics Canada 2010) and a total value of approximately $11 billion when valueadded food processing is considered.” The three-year $8.5 million CTAG project aims to enable geneticists and breeders to characterize the genes at the most fundamental level: the DNA sequence. As is the case with a plant seed, including the aforementioned oats, sequencing wheat DNA may hold the key to genetic improvements. Any varietal improvements should ultimately help farmers meet the increasing demands for food. In the release Western Canadian Wheat Growers Saskatchewan Vice-President Geoffrey Hewson said, “Research is vital to the growth of our industry. This project will lead to new and improved wheat varieties that will benefit producers for years to come.” Hewson is right in assessing the importance of research to industry growth, and public investment through our governments is a critical aspect of funding the required work. The recent announcement is one where government has reaffirmed the need for taxpayer dollars in supporting future food production, and they need to be congratulated for making the wise investment of our dollars.

A back handed comment I thought I’d get a jump on this column because we all know that one shouldn’t put off until tomorrow what can be done today, and I’m constantly trying to write these at the last minute. Thankfully this week’s rant is going to be a piece of cake to write. Honestly, thinking up this idea was a no brainer and, God willing, it’ll be an easy read for you. My topic: cliches and figures of speech. I know, I know, I’m constantly all over the map, but please don’t abandon ship; I insist that this is worth the read, you can bank on it. Always look on the bright side, right? Anyway, why would anyone bother to use their own words when there are plenty of oldie but goodie sayings already as good as gold? Truly, there are so many great

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A more harmonious aspect favors all relationships. Family ties with mates and children are strengthened. Libra is Cupid’s choice to win the amorous Aries’ heart. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The bold Bull is ready to take on fresh challenges. Expect some opposition as you plow new ground -- but supporters will outnumber detractors. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) An upcoming job change could mean uprooting your family to a far-distant location. Weigh all considerations carefully before making a decision one way or the other. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A long-standing problem is resolved by a mutually agreed upon compromise. You can now focus on getting the facts you’ll need for a decision you’ll soon be asked to make.

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me sayings that trying to come up with your own phrase is like banging your head against a brick wall. It’s really become a bee in my bonnet that basketcase English teachers are always trying to force us to ditch them. I mean, how behind the times are they? I guess you could say I have a bit of a bone to pick. I think it all boils down to their old-fashioned education. Bottom line: these are different times and you need to live and let live, though I accept that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. I hope I haven’t opened a can

LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat needs to be wary of what appears to be a golden investment opportunity. That “sure thing” could turn out to be nothing more than a sack of Kitty Glitter. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You give of yourself generously to help others, but right now you must allow people to help you. Confide your problems to family and trusted friends. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Relationships benefit from a strong harmonious aspect. Things go more smoothly at work. Someone you thought you’d never see again asks for a reconciliation. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A minor distraction interferes with travel plans, but the delay is temporary. Meanwhile, expect to play peacemaker once again for feuding family members. Someone else used them and they’ve stuck around because they’re great—those who disagree are invited to take a long walk off of a short pier. Is it hot enough for ya? What’s the point in using your own unique words to tell your story? Cliches are readily available and who doesn’t love looking and sounding like everyone else? Taking a different approach to writing is unnecessary, but we live in a society where writing is obsolete, don’t we? No one reads anything anyway. Employers don’t care if you can spell or write with a tiny bit of unique flare, right? Right?

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Control that possessive tendency that sometimes goads you into an unnecessary display of jealousy. You could be creating problems where none currently exist. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new project holds some challenges you hadn’t expected. But don’t be discouraged; you’ll find you’re more prepared to deal with them than you realized. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Yours is the sign of the celestial Chemist, so don’t be surprised if you experience a pleasant “chemistry” betwixt yourself and that new Leo in your life. Dear Tiger: So you’ve fired Stevie Williams and are in the market for a new caddy to help steer you toward the magical 19 major victories you need to surpass Jack’s record of 18. If you’ve had the open-mindedness to use a Canadian swing instructor, Sean Foley, to help you get back on track, then why not consider a Canadian caddy too? Tiger, I’m your man. It’s not that I would be so great lugging your bag, advising you what club to hit from 177 yards, how much a certain putt will break to the left on those fast Bermuda greens (‘Puttin’ with Penton’ was my moniker, though, for a period of time in my life), or how far that 32 MPH wind out of the right will carry your Nike to the left. You probably know all those things without the advice of a second party. What you really need is a life caddy, someone who will steer you straight from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Let’s face it: Your problems aren’t centred around your driver, irons and putter. Your head is screwed up because of those three F-sounding words that overtook your persona: Philanderer, phony and fraud. You can probably construct a winning swing with the help of Foley and if somehow your rivals start to fear you again - you know, the intimidation factor - you can return to the glory days of old. Remember: Nicklaus didn’t win his 15th major until he was 38, so you’ve got three years on him in that department. Your pal Phil won three of his majors after turning 35. But back to the job application: I’m offering my services from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. We’ll have you in bed (alone) at an appropriate hour, and we’ll keep you away from Barkley, Jordan and Co. We’ll go

arrive a day early so the Secret Service can ransack his beard.” • Comedy writer Alex Kaseberg: “British Open winner Darren Clarke said he got a text message from Tiger Woods giving him advice: ‘Stay the hell away from a restaurant called Hooters.’ “ • Another one from Kaseberg: “Five North Korean World Cup women’s soccer players tested positive for steroids claiming it was from deer musk for treatment of a lightning strike. Suddenly my dogate-my-term-paper story doesn’t seem so bad.” • Laker Ron Artest, to the L.A. Times, on why he’s legally changing his name to Metta World Peace: “When fans get mad at me, they can’t say, ‘I hate World Peace.’ “ • Fox NFL analyst Brian Billick, to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, on why he’s not anticipating any offers to return to coaching: “They’re looking for young and cheap, and I’m neither.” • Headline at SportsPickle.com, on Ben Roethlisberger ’s wedding registry: “James Harrison is getting him a concussion.” • Comedy writer Alan Ray, on the financially strapped Mets: “Instead of the showers, players head for the sponge bath.” • Brad Dickson in the Omaha (Neb.) WorldHerald, after ex-Houston pitcher Jose Cano pitched to his son, Robinson, en route to winning the Home Run Derby: “He gave up 32 homers in three hours, so he still has the stuff to pitch for the Astros.” • R.J. Currie of sportsdeke.com: “Goalie Hope Solo has been given a lot of credit for the success of the U.S. team at the Women’s World Cup. The Canadian team, on the other hand, was hopeless.” Care to comment? Email brucepenton2003@ yahoo.ca

Bruce Penton Sports Columnist out for ice cream twice a week - promise. There’s no replay button in life, Tiger. Those prime competition years when you were 33 and 34 are gone forever. You’re now 35 and logically have about a five-year window to win those five majors you so desperately want - and need - to be known as the greatest of all time. Riders step up in Montreal It certainly seemed as though the sky was falling for the Saskatchewan Roughriders given their 0-3 start to the 2011 CFL campaign. Fans were upset and who could blame them? Canada’s Team hadn’t gotten off to such an atrocious start since 2000 which was long before many of the club’s new found fanbase began following the team. But what better way to snap the funk and make a statement to the league than going into Montreal and upsetting the undefeated Grey Cup champions in their own park? That’s exactly what the Green and White did Sunday night, stunning the Alouettes 27-24. During the three game losing stretch it seemed no one was exempt from the finger of blame. GM Brendan Taman, first-year coach Greg Marshall, coordinators Doug Berry and Richie Hall and quarterback Darian Durant all shared considerable abuse on the talk shows, blogs and message boards. And what about team President Jim Hopson? Why hadn’t he said anything through all of this? Was he hiding? “It’s pretty hard to hide when you

Rod Pedersen Rider Insider look like me,” Hopson smiled before the game in Montreal. “No I’m not hiding. But I really feel that the football guys are the ones who should deal with the issue. If I’m asked I’ll certainly comment but with Ken Miller, Greg and Brendan plus all of our coaches and players, none of them hid. We’re going to put our heads down and battle through it.” That’s exactly what Rider defensive tackle Dario Romero did Sunday night, blasting through the line and knocking Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo out of the game with a concussion in the second quarter. The Riders took the lead shortly thereafter and never looked back. “It was a great victory for our guys,” noted Rider coach Greg Marshall, who notched his first career CFL victory. “We fought hard and fought for each other. They can say what they

want about Calvillo. He didn’t leave, we knocked him out. That’s football.” It sure seemed like the Riders of old. The club seemed listless through the first three games but came out in Montreal with a vengeance. It was a chippy, nasty affair between two clubs who have become bitter rivals. Meeting twice in the Grey Cup will do that to you. On this night at least, the Riders got the bragging rights. “They still have the makings of a good football team don’t they?” quizzed TSN play-by-play man Chris Cuthbert before the game. Yes Chris. Yes they do. It was just a matter of going out and proving it. While many are hesitant to say that “the Riders are back”, the team can at least feel good about itself heading home for their Week five challenge Saturday against Calgary at Mosaic Stadium. The club still has 14 games left to play and you can only win one at a time. But at least they seem to have the ship back on course. (Rod Pedersen is the voice of the Riders on CKRM radio)

Art can get better with age Art is a calling that speaks to people at every stage of life. Art classes for seniors at the Estevan Art Gallery begin on Aug. 11. Karly Millions, the gallery educator at the art gallery, is in the throes of organizing classes and taking the classroom to seniors. Each summer for the last three years, Millions has brought art classes to places like the Estevan Regional Nursing Home, giving an opportunity for the city’s senior residents to take part in something many of them spent a lot of time doing earlier in their life. Millions said the most important thing she has to do is provide the supplies, as the institutions her students reside don’t always have access to the same art materials she does. “It’s a part of our outreach programming to bring art and to bring

community programming to seniors in the city that don’t have access to it,” said Millions. Many of the people who take part have an art background and have explored different artistic mediums for many years. Millions said that affects how she handles the classes and often means she can implement a hands-off approach, letting the students do their work. She runs youth art classes as well, but noted there can be a significant difference in subject matter and materials. “The skill level is different,” she said. “I obviously don’t want to treat senior citizens like children. The subject matter is usually quite different. With all of our schools, they’re usually related in some way to the exhibitions we have in the gallery. For instance, we have sculptures in both

parts of the gallery right, so I would probably do some sort of sculpture project (with children). “With the senior classes, it’s usually in the summer, so I try to find maybe more of a craft-oriented thing. A lot of seniors are interested in practising actual art. A lot of them have painting and drawing backgrounds. They’re excited to have access to those materials.” Bringing in materials they may have used in the past, but no longer have access to, gives them the opportunity to engage in the kind of artistic expression they love. “A lot of them have shown me things that they’ve painted or drawn. They’ve obviously made art for many, many years. They are interested in art and continue to make it.” Millions said she really enjoys guiding the

classes for seniors. “For me, it’s also about a kind for respect for senior citizens. Especially with the art gallery, a lot of the seniors in Estevan built this building. They petitioned to have it built. We just want to do as much as we can to give back to them. I have so much to learn from them.” She said getting to know the students is a big part of what she likes about the program. “I call it a class, but it’s really more of a social experience.” Classes in the gallery involve coffee and tea and is a time to socialize. The classes are pretty informal and are meant for those who haven’t had much artistic experience previously as well as those who have. For their first art class, they will be making ceramic-tile flower pots and picture frames.

Baseball talent runs in the family By Tonaya Marr of The Mercury “Keeping it in the family” sounds a bit cliche, but there’s certainly no doubt that Macy Earl lucked into some great fastball genes. Macy is a member of the Estevan Rocket Sales Rockettes, who won the peewee provincial B title in July. She was credited for her stellar backcatching, playing 23 innings in the tournament to help her team to victory. Her grandmother, Elsie Earl, is a ball star in her own right. Elsie was a member of the Grand Rapids Chicks in the All American Girls Baseball League, and has been inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame in North Battleford, the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in St. Mary’s, Ont., and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, NY. Both Macy and Elsie began playing fastball at the age of nine, though for different reasons. Elsie discovered her love of the game after drawing the attention of a teacher with her good throwing arm. “When I was going to school, there was a teacher there who kind of took me under her wing because she could see that I could throw well. She kind of coached me.” Elsie also grew up in a time where there weren’t a dozen different sports offered to children. “In my time, it was the only sport that was around, you know, because we

Elsie Earl, middle row, third from the left, poses with the Saskatoon Pats. The team won the western Canada fastball championships in 1945. Photo IH 3660 by Thams courtesy of Saskatoon Public Library - Local History Room. didn’t have all of these other sports,” she said. This is a world away from Macy’s experience, as she is not only a talented ball player, but excels in both hockey and volleyball as well. Macy was encouraged to play fastball by her mother, Shauna Earl, who co-coached the Rockettes this season. “My mom really want ed me to (play). She started me in it and then I fell in love,” said Macy. Their love for the game is another similarity they share, as Elsie said she enjoys every aspect of the sport. Macy said she really enjoys intense, close games. “When you’re into a game and it’s going fast

and it’s close,” she said, describing the ideal situation. Both Elsie and Macy have played short stop, second base and catcher, and Elsie was an outfielder as well. In the summer of 1945, Elsie was asked to play hardball for the Grand Rapids Chicks after her team won the western Canada fastball championship. She was playing for the Saskatoon Pats at the time and had a terrific game, helping her team triumph over the Edmonton Pats. A scout for the AAGBL approached her following the final game, and offered her a spot in the league. Elsie spent the next two summers playing for the Chicks, as well as playing on loan for the Fort Wayne

Daisies when the team was short players. In 1947, Elsie helped the Chicks win the league championship. Macy considers herself lucky to have a veteran player for a grandma. “It’s good to have her around. She can tell me what I’m doing sometimes, and has lots of stories about ball.” These days, Elsie enjoys being able to watch Macy and her team play at home. “They play good ball here, when they get going,” she said. “They have poor days too, like everybody does, but on the whole, they’re pretty well. I was amazed with them.” That’s definitely high praise coming from a hall of famer.

The gift of a bike Summer time for children is all about swimming, eating popscicles, lazy afternoons in the sun, running through sprinklers, late night sleepovers and bike riding. Recently our family spent a week in Wolseley, SK with my mother and extended family. As we packed for this trip, a necessity for everyone was a bike. You can’t go to a small town without a bike. A bike represents fun and freedom. My husband, Philip, secured the bikes on the bike rack and we were Wolseley bound. Our time there was enjoyable. The kids love the relaxed nature of small-town life, the freedom to walk to the stores, go to the café with their cousins and friends sans parents. Small-town life truly has beauty that must be experienced. Visiting my mother’s small town (the town I grew up in) is something our young family has come to love. While in Wolseley we had an incident with our bikes. Two bikes were left outside my brother’s house (while the kids were inside watching a movie) and sadly someone decided it would be funny to steal the bikes. Yes, it’s hard to believe, but the bikes were taken.

Upon discovering the stolen bike situation we took to the streets looking in the usual dumping or hiding spots. Unfortunately the bikes were not found, and two very sad girls were in my company. Being someone who is an avid user of social media, I decided to post my frustrations on Facebook. I shared the information about the bikes and let people know they were gone. I encouraged people to let me know if they knew anything. My mother’s neighbours, who have been good friends of ours since I was little, read my status update and echoed my frustrations. For many summers now they have watched my kids (from across the road) ride their bikes up and down the street. They have seen my son build bike jumps and successfully conquer them. They watched as my youngest finally mastered the two-wheeler. They have witnessed the joy my children have derived from their bikes, and being grandparents themselves, they understood what it would mean to a child to

have their bikes stolen. On one very hot afternoon the neighbour I speak of (Joe), came over with a blue bike. It was an old blue bike, but it had two wheels, a chain, seat, handle bars and brakes that, if enough pressure was applied, worked. This bike had seen it’s glory and in most cases would have been passed by and replaced with a newer, flashier model. This bike was a true gift. When my 13-yearold daughter saw it and realized it was hers to ride while there, she squealed with glee. This bike was old school, and it was exactly what she wanted and had been asking us to get her. She enjoyed the bike for the duration of our stay, all the while secretly hoping we could bring it home. The bike, much like my daughter has character, it is unique and stood alone with confidence and poise. To our neighbours, thank you for the gift of that well-loved blue bike. You made a young girl smile, and you took the sting out of her loss. Here’s hoping that on our next trip we might just be allowed to bring that blue bike home. We live in a time when new is said to be better, but sometimes a well-loved and used article is exactly what the heart needs.

Bound-verse poem VS. Haiku

He He She She By: Jordan Baker

Said

A Haiku has freedom too, You simply have to break the mould. And that’s poetry. Haiku is Japanese, They know their words like they know their cars. They’re just the bee’s knees.

Said

It’s a matter of opinion and how you like to spend your time that helps you choose your favourite style, and my favourite is rhyme.

Discipline is key. To write a haiku takes thought, It’s more than just rhyme.

Voted Estevan’s best pizza!

By: Tonaya Marr

‘Cause a haiku can rhyme; It’s another part of the poem’s arsenal. That makes it the best.

I see that haiku has it’s place and it’s purpose is true, but it will never be as cool as rhyming “you” with “ewe.” Haiku poems are structured and take so long to write. Free verse rhymes are fun and easy! No struggle, pain or fright! Rhyme is for creativity, for expressing how you feel. Haikus don’t even make sense, they’re dull and lacking zeal.

Haiku’s hit pop culture, They are referenced in Wayne’s World. And that movie’s still cool.

So when you choose your favourite poem to perform at concert time, Hang your haikus out to dry and choose something that rhymes.

You can stumble on a haiku; It can be said without any planning. Just ask Garth. Haiku’s are multipurpose: A birthday haiku, a wedding or a funeral. It’s the perfect poetic token.

Little Golden Books Q: I have four Little Golden Books from when I was a child. They are “Timothy Tiger’s Terrible Toothache,” “The Roadrunner with Mesa Marathon,” “Rags” and “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood: Henrietta Meets Something New.” I have been offered $5 each and want to check with you before I make the deal. -- Bob, Julian, Calif. A: I checked prices for your titles in one of my favorite references, Warman’s Little Golden Books: Identification and Price Guide by Steve Santi and published by Krause. Five dollars seems to be fair. Incidentally, your books were published in 1988, 1985, 1970 and 1974, in the order you listed them. *** Q: I have a hand-painted vase that is marked as being a piece of Nippon. How can I determine its value? -- Martha, Sioux Falls, S.D. A: Nippon generally refers to Japanese wares made between 1891 and 1921, but this isn’t a hard and fast rule. The Nippon mark also appears on porcelains that were crafted much later. To find out approximate values, I recommend you secure a copy of Collector’s Encyclopedia of Nippon Porcelain by Joan F. Van Patten. I found a copy

for $17 at www.amazon.com. *** Q: I have a duplicate of the holster and guns that the “Lone Ranger” wore in his films during the 1950s. I would like to know if there is someone who can authenticate them for me. -- Robert, Surprise, Ariz. A: Tex Holland is manager of Circle C Enterprises, the Lone Ranger Fan Club. PROVINCIAL REGINA - Saskatchewan’s information commissioner has blasted a doctor who lost track of at least 2,600 patient files and possibly more than a million pieces of personal health information. About 150 open boxes of records were stored in the basement common area of a Regina shopping mall where thousands of people had access, including costumed children and their parents who toured a haunted house display there last Halloween. Gary Dickson said what’s really scary is that papers found in a recycling bin outside the mall in March account for only 25 boxes. “We’ve never found a satisfactory explanation as to what happened to the other 125,” Dickson said Wednesday after releasing his investigative report into the case. “They just lost track of them.” He recommended that justice officials prosecute Dr. Teik Im Ooi under the Health Information Protection Act. If convicted, she could face a personal fine of up to $50,000 and her clinic could be fined a maximum $500,000. Dickson said since the act came into force in 2003, no one has been charged. NATIONAL OTTAWA - The Supreme Court of Canada says interest earned by natives from accounts held on reserves is tax free. The court has overturned a pair of rulings from the Tax Court of Canada which held that such earnings were taxable. Both cases dealt with interest income from deposits in credit unions, but would apply to deposits with any financial institution on a reserve. The tax court ruled that since the institutions earned their money in the general economy, the interest is taxable. The high court says that is irrelevant and what counts is that the money was native property on a reserve, which is tax-exempt under the Indian Act. *** MONTREAL - The dramatic fall from grace of a once-rising star in Can-

ada’s military culminated Thursday in a $7,000 fine and a symbolic reprimand. This was after retired brigadier-general Daniel Menard had already gone from being a prominent military commander, to an unemployed civilian fighting to keep his family and rebuild his tattered reputation. It unravelled following an affair with a subordinate, a fling that began in Canada and continued in the makeshift military living quarters in the dusty confines of Kandahar. Menard pleaded guilty Thursday before a military court martial to having illicit relations while leading Canada’s mission in Afghanistan, and then urging her to cover it up. His punishment included a fine and a demotion to the rank of colonel - but that latter penalty is largely symbolic because he is retired from the military and will retain his previous rank and pension benefits. *** OTTAWA - Canada’s crime rate fell last year to its lowest level in nearly four decades - a statistic opposition MPs claim as proof the governing Conservatives need not spend billions on new jails. But academics say the debate in Ottawa has everything to do with politics and nothing to do with reality, since the rates of crime and incarceration are not actually connected. So what’s behind the drop? The experts point the finger at shifting demographics. Their theory goes like this: the number of young people in this country is shrinking. Younger people tend to commit more crimes than older people. So if there are fewer younger people, it follows there will also be less crime. INTERNATIONAL WA S H I N G T O N Democratic Rep. David Wu of Oregon announced Tuesday that he will resign amid political fallout from an 18-year-old woman’s allegations she had an unwanted sexual encounter with him. Within days of the allegation, Democratic leaders requested a House Ethics Committee investigation

of his conduct. Wu had said Monday he would not seek re-election, but had come under increasing pressure to step down. Wu is the second House Democrat in the last six weeks to be forced to resign as a result of a sex scandal. Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York resigned after sending lewd photos of himself through Twitter. *** COPENHAGEN - The Olympics have pentathlons - and so does the World Santa Congress, sort of. Santas from all over the world lugged their overweight waistlines to this year’s 54th World Santa Claus Congress, throwing sacks of presents and firing canon balls in a new physical fitness contest. The five-discipline event is the latest addition to the three-day conference at the world’s oldest amusement park: Bakken, just outside the Danish capital of Copenhagen. Two teams of St. Nicks - one from Denmark and the other from the United States, Sweden, Russia, Germany and other countries - competed Wednesday for the coveted trophy of Best Santa Team. The Danish Santas won. *** ADELAIDE, Australia - An unsteady forklift dropped a container full of fine Australian wine worth more than $1 million, smashing most of the bottles. The winemaker says he’s “gut-wrenched, shocked and numb” after the loss of his flagship shiraz. Sparky Marquis of Mollydooker Wines lost a third of his Velvet Glove Shiraz production after the accident that destroyed all but one of the 462 cases bound for the United States. Each bottle of the Mollydooker wine sells for $200. Marquis said Friday that when workers opened up the dropped container, “it was like a murder scene. There was red everywhere.” He said the wine was fully insured. The accident has crippled Mollydooker’s U.S. launch in September. It will also impact the wine market in Australia.

Canada on podium at aquatic championships

NATIONAL SHANGHAI - Canada has won bronze in synchronized swimming at the world aquatic champion-

ships Natalia Ishchenko won her fourth gold medal, helping the Russian team win the free combination event Thursday at the Oriental Sports Complex. Ishchenko and her nine teammates finished with 98.470 points. China took the silver with 96.360 and Canada the bronze with 96.150. Ishchenko won the solo routine on Wednesday and teamed with Svetlana Romashina to win the duet technical final a night after taking the technical solo gold. Russia also won the team technical competition and has swept all five events so far with two to go. It’s Canada’s second medal at the championships, adding to a diving silver. *** Vi c t o r i a ’s S a r a h Kaufman looks to take another step closer to the Strikeforce women’s welterweight title she once held when she fights American Liz (Girl-Rilla) Carmouche on Friday night. The Strikeforce Challengers show is set for the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Strikeforce, which is now owned by the UFC,

has opted to stage all of its second-tier Challengers events at the Palms. Kaufman was scheduled to meet Carmouche in April but the bout was postponed when the American was needed to face champion Marloes Coenen in a March title fight as a late injury replacement. *** ZURICH - Canada has dropped two places to No. 8 in the FIFA women’s world rankings after its disastrous performance at the World Cup. The Canadians, who will host the 2015 tournament, failed to win a game and exited after the first round in Germany. The United States remains atop the rankings despite its World Cup final defeat to Japan in a penalty shootout last Sunday. Japan was unchanged at No. 4 The U.S. has topped the standings since March 2008, and is followed by Germany, Brazil, Japan and Sweden. England climbs four places to No. 6, ahead of its quarter-finals conqueror France. North Korea drops four to No. 12 and now faces a FIFA disciplinary investiga-

tion after five of its players tested positive for anabolic steroids at the tournament in Germany. The FIFA women’s rankings include 129 national teams. INTERNATIONAL ANKARA, Turkey Turkish club Besiktas is in talks with Kobe Bryant’s representatives about the possibility of the Los Angeles Lakers’ star playing in Turkey during the NBA lockout. “It is a fact that Kobe Bryant’s managers have contacted us,” coach Ergin Ataman said Thursday, a week after Besiktas signed New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams. Ataman said Bryant was waiting for an offer from Besiktas. The club, however, said it would need a sponsor to be able to pay for Bryant’s contract. “Our board will evaluate that,” Ataman said. Bryant, who has won five NBA titles with the Lakers and is a 13-time NBA all-star, has been on a tour of China, including a stop in Shanghai on July 20. He said he would consider playing overseas during the lockout

and mentioned China and Turkey as possibilities. *** WELLINGTON, New Zealand - New Zealand will unveil a new jersey in Saturday’s Tri-Nations rugby test against South Africa, risking the ire of a nation which regards the black jersey and silver fern as icons that should not be tampered with. Team mangement and players have previewed the new jersey, designed by Adidas, and say it won’t upset traditionalists, as it contains all the traditions of the famed All Blacks strip, but with a high-tech twist. Fullback Mils Muliaina, who is set to play his 96th test on Saturday said “there’s not much change at all. There’s still the blackness in it, the silver fern’s still on it. But the new design does have one drawback — it is so skin-tight it leaves nowhere to hide excess body fat.” *** WASHINGTON -After months of public nastiness and private negotiations, of court filings and rulings, of players and owners squabbling over more than US$9 billion a year, NFL fans

finally saw the handshake and heard the words they awaited: “Football’s back.” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL Players Association head DeMaurice Smith both used that phrase while standing shoulder-to-shoulder Monday, announcing their agreement on a 10-year deal to end the lockout that began in March. Then came what may truly be the lasting image of the dispute’s resolution: Indianapolis Colts offensive lineman Jeff Saturday wrapped one of his burly arms around New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and enveloped him in a hug — a gesture that symbolized the acrimony’s end more than any statement could.

PROVINCIAL REGINA - Winless in three games to start the CFL season, the Saskatchewan Roughriders made a roster move July 20 that sent shockwaves from the locker-room to the practice field. The Roughriders released veteran defensive back Tad Kornegay - a transaction that wasn’t particularly popular with those left behind. “It was a very quiet locker-room in there this morning,” said fellow defensive back Lance Frazier, who called Kornegay’s departure “heart-breaking.” Kornegay spent the last four seasons in Saskatchewan and was extremely popular among his teammates. He was part of the team’s Grey Cup championship squad in 2007. General manager Brendan Taman indicated the Roughriders tried unsuccessfully to trade Kornegay before deciding to release him outright.

By Samantha Weaver • It was 20th-century novelist, literary critic and academic C.S. Lewis, best-known for his series “The Chronicles of Narnia,” who made the following sage observation: “We all want progress, but if you’re on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.” • You don’t often associate museums with beverages, but it seems that they’re fairly popular throughout the world. For instance, museums dedicated to coffee and/or tea can be found in London, Moscow, Paris, Sao Paolo, Zurich and Kyoto, as well as in China, South Korea, Colombia andAngola. Germany has three of them. Coffee and tea must be quite popular in the Netherlands; museums dedicated to the beverages can be found in five different cities there. • Are you an ailurophile? If you’re over-fond of cats, you are. • You probably know that Bill Gates lives in a palatial house near Seattle, but you might not realize quite how big it is. The sprawling home is a whopping 66,000 square feet; the property taxes alone are approximately $1 million per year. It’s not unusual to have heated floors, but the Gates’ estate has heated driveways. Beats shoveling snow, I suppose. • Need another reason to buy food that’s grown locally? Studies show that 60 percent of what we spend on food is eaten up by transportation costs. *** Thought for the Day: “What we think, or what we know, or what we believe is, in the end, of little consequence. The only consequence is what we do.” -- John Ruskin (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

APPRAISALS Heat and the Elderly DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My mother is 92 and lives by herself. She’s quite independent and does well. A neighbor takes her grocery shopping, and we take her to other places she has to go. She is extremely set in her ways. I offered to have her home air-conditioned. She won’t hear of it. She says she’s used a fan all her life, and she likes to keep the windows open. I worry about someone her age tolerating heat, and it gets very hot here. Can you provide some arguments that would change her mind? -- D.A. ANSWER: Your offer to air-condition your mother’s home is a kind gesture and has lots of merit. I’m not about to challenge your mother. She has successfully lived a long life, and I could learn from her. People in the past lived comfortably without air conditioning. Your mother does have to be on guard for dehydration and heat sickness. During hot summers, everyone has to stay well hydrated. Older people’s sense of thirst is not as reliable an indicator of fluid needs as is younger people’s thirst sense. She should sip water all day long, or she can choose any beverage she likes, including tea. Cooled drinks help keep the body cooled. Evaporation is the chief means the body has for staying cool. Not only is an older person’s thirst sensation blunted, but so is the ability to sweat. Evaporation of sweat cools the body. I don’t mean visible sweat; the sweating I mean is imperceptible but constant. Her fan helps evaporate that imperceptible sweat. However, with a reduced capacity to sweat, older people are at greater risk of suffering from a heat injury. Increased body heat increases the body’s need for oxygen, and that stresses the heart. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2011 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Picnic Potato Salad Potato salad is always a hit at a casual barbecue, and this simple recipe of red-skinned potatoes with a tangy mayonnaise dressing is a winner! Our secret? First toss the warm potatoes with a vinaigrette so they can absorb lots of flavor, then stir with the creamy dressing to coat. 3 pounds (about 12) medium red-skin potatoes, cut into 1-inch chunks 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 teaspoons spicy brown mustard 1 1/4 teaspoons salt 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1/2 cup mayonnaise

1/3 cup whole milk 2 small celery stalks, thinly sliced 2 green onions, minced 1. In 5- to 6-quart saucepot, place potatoes and enough water to cover; heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 8 to 10 minutes or until potatoes are fork-tender. 2. Meanwhile, in large bowl, with wire whisk, mix vinegar, oil, mustard, salt and pepper. 3. Drain potatoes. Add hot potatoes to bowl with vinaigrette; gently stir with rubber spatula until evenly coated and vinaigrette is absorbed. Cool 15 minutes. 4. In small bowl, with wire whisk, mix mayonnaise and milk until

smooth. Add mayonnaise mixture, celery and green onions to potatoes. Gently stir with rubber spatula until mixed. Serve warm or cover and refrigerate up to 1 day. Yields 12 (2/3 cup) servings. • Each serving: About 215 calories, 9g total fat (1g saturated), 6mg cholesterol, 325mg sodium, 31g total carbs, 3g dietary fiber, 3g protein.
