THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JULY 8, 2011

Donations keep coming for flood victims A drop off-point for goods of all kinds is now available at Park Avenue Gifts and Paradise Tan, in the stone church on the corner of Third Street and 12th Avenue. The goods are picked up twice a week by the RM of Coalfields to be distributed to those who have been displaced by the flooding. Valerie Pelton, acting administrator for the RM of Coalfields, said there are still about 30 people staying in trailers by the Bienfait Memorial Arena and another 40 who have evacuated homes but are staying with friends or family in Bienfait. Pelton offered words of thanks those who have been able to contribute to the bags of goods that have

gone out so far. She did a pickup last Friday and Saturday, as donations have been accumulating since around June 24. “I’m glad to live in a community where we can help each other out,” said Pelton. The drop-off point accepts all items, new and used. Pelton noted that they have already received an “overload” of bedding. Right now she suggested donating things that are related to camping would be great. Items like coffee makers are certainly desired. The drop-off will be available as long as people continue to come in with goods. Throughout the summer and likely into the fall, people will be able to

drop off goods, but those organizing the drop-off ask those donating to watch for the list of necessary items to change as the seasons do. Those affected may require things like winter boots or coats once the weather turns in a few months. While they aren’t looking for those items now, they may ask for them in the future. Right now there is a specific list, though it changes regularly, of what people need. A lot of the items are toiletries or kitchenware. If you would like to drop off an item but aren’t sure if it’s needed, you can call Pelton at the RM office, 306-388-2323. The list of items they are looking for is posted on some community message boards.

There were about 60 bags of goods at Park Avenue Gifts ready to be sent out to flood victims who have been evacuated from their homes. The RM of Coalfields picks up bags from this location twice per week to distribute to families in need. You can use this for other shoes, too. Just be aware that the softener sheet should stay inside the shoe; it could discolor certain fabrics on the outside.

Nothing slips under it, and I can clean it off easily.” -- I.R. in Massachusetts

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JULY 8, 2011

One-on-one with

Jessica Coté By Tonaya Marr What led you to opening Obviously Chic? I did journalism school and then I finished that. Then I went into marketing and public relations, actually. I’m always going to write. Marketing and public relations is obviously a lot better paying than journalism and I just kind of fell into that, and I was like “wow!” So then I actually freelanced for years ‘cause I made so much money freelancing. Then I quit. I realized I was in love with fashion and even though I had all this marketing and PR, I quit my job and moved to Vancouver and went to fashion school. When I was in fashion school, I was like, “OK, I want to do marketing and PR in fashion.” The day after school I got my dream job at a company called Wear Else and so I became their marketing and PR manager. They’re a high end store and they have four locations. So I did all of their fashion shows, all of their branding, all that stuff. And then after that, I was like “you know what? I’m not in love with this, so I’m going to go home and open up a store.” So I quit my job and spent the summer getting ready to open up this store. It was only going to be a pop-up store, open for eight weeks, twice a year. And then I came here and opened it up and the response was unreal and I bought the building, and now we’re almost two years old. Is Obviously Chic a unique store in Canada? I have no competition online. There’s one website in Ontario called Dress911, but they basically just sell dresses and they don’t have their company branded like me. My website is absolutely beautiful, it’s completely branded like my store. I have no competition. So my goal is to be Canada’s top online boutique in five years and to open up a warehouse here and do all that.

What effect has your store had on Estevan? I’m really putting Estevan on the map. So many people on Facebook will be like, “Where are you located?” and I’ll be like, “Estevan” and they’re like “Where?!” It’s funny ‘cause all of us drive to Regina to shop, but now I’m having so many people driving down from Regina, asking if they can have a shopping party. So I’ll put together shopping parties for groups of women just so they can come and shop. I’ve had people come from Yorkton on their way to Minot, people from Swift Current. People from Vancouver who are visiting relatives will be like “Oh, I’ve heard about your store,” and it’s all Estevan. I’m really, really proud to bring people here and now they’re kind of being like “Estevan… Obviously Chic.” They ask me, “Where do I go eat? What can I do here?” So it’s kind of fun to bring everybody here. Why choose Estevan for the location of your store? It’s my hometown. I was born and raised in Lampman. Obviously it means a lot to me to come back here. I’ve been gone and have done my thing, and coming back has been a great experience because every time I came home, people would be like “I love your style,” or “Where did you get this?” and I’d be like “Oh, I got it for $20.” So then I kind of just sat and realized that this is a good market to come into and bring my fashion expertise and unique styles and people are kind of hungry for that. Again, it was never supposed to be more than a pop-up. And then, once I started going, I realized that “Wow, this is a great opportunity for me to launch a national website.” Because nowhere else in Canada could I do it at the cost I’m doing here. And I’m right at the border. It’s a great opportunity for me to give back to my community where I grew up. Has your goal of keeping your items affordable changed since opening as a full-time store? It’s still the same thing. The bulk of my store, nothing is over $100. As I’ve grown, I find things that are maybe a little bit over. Like my wrap watches are $100$125. That type of stuff. I bring in unique things, but

U-

the bulk of who I am is all under $150. How did journalism lead you to fashion? I grew up here, so I had no concept that fashion was even a job. When I first left here, the Internet was just starting to come out. So growing up in Lampman was like “Oh, wow, fashion?” So I’d always been the girl growing up that was really into style and stuff, but had no idea. Then, in my second year of journalism school, I was like “I’m in love with fashion, what am I doing?” You know, having a meltdown about being in journalism school. So then I decided to finish journalism school and then I went and applied for Ryerson, actually, to go to fashion school there. I didn’t get in, but it ended up OK ‘cause then I had an amazing career. I was the marketing and media manager for six years for a high-end resort company. I realized that, travelling and stuff, I was more concerned about what city I was going to shop at, rather than the hotels that I was trying to get people to stay at. So I was like, “that’s it, I’m going to go,” and I researched a fashion school and quit my career. How has Estevan received Obviously Chic? Estevan has been phenomenal. The only reason I did stay was because of Estevan in general. The response has been overwhelming. I think I’m kind of on my own, I have my own thing, just as Jenny Joans is name brands and they have their own thing. I don’t really think I’m competition with many people. I just think that I’m my own kind of thing. The surrounding area has been phenomenal. As you know, we’re rural, so southeast Saskatchewan is very supportive and just women from all over flocking to me.

graphic of women do you find shop at your store? Actually, my demographic is really well spread out. It can go anywhere from the young girls, like 15, all the way up to 60-year-old women coming in and getting these wraps, getting jewelery, getting scarves. There’s really something for everyone. Obviously the demographic is more 20 to 35, maybe, but I’m still getting everybody of all ages. I don’t really have a set demographic. It’s just if you’re fashionable, and you like different things, it doesn’t matter what age you are, it seems. What do you enjoy the most about your job? I really, really love that almost all of my customers have become friends. Everybody comes in and I know them by name now. And I know everything they’ve ever bought. Somebody will update me on their life and will come back in two weeks later, and I’ll be like, “Oh, did so-and-so have their baby?” It’s kind of nice coming back and I never really knew anybody and now I know the whole town, and everybody kind of knows me. I love when people feel good in my clothes. I love when people post pictures on the fan page, or they come and tell me “Oh, I wore this dress in Vegas and 10 people stopped me. I couldn’t believe it” or “I can’t believe I bought this in Estevan. I’m in Vegas and people are like ‘Wow, you’re on trend.’” That makes me feel really good.

Perspective

No such thing as an overpaid athlete The free agent frenzy began last Friday for the National Hockey League and as players have begun to sign with teams, the annual exercise in capitalism is enough to put an ear-to-ear grin on Gordon Gekko’s face. A lot of people say athletes are overpaid. After all, why should they receive grotesque paycheques for playing a game, while the rest of us work everyday scrounging around with our fellow bottom feeders. I’m not one of those people. While I do scrounge around with my fellow bottom feeders, I don’t think athletes are overpaid. If there is anyone to blame for exorbitant sports salaries, it’s the people like you and me who push those dollars higher. Is a $60 million-over-nine-year contract a lot? Well, it’s a lot of money, but if Brad Richards asks for that contract and the owner says OK, that’s what he is worth. The team has to look at what they can afford and if they can afford that contract, and are willing to pay for it, then good on Richards. With high-priced elite athletes getting so much, however, many of the

Jordan Baker Thoughts From My Fingers “character” players make considerably less. The disparity between the lowend salary and high-end is pretty wide. The highest-paid players in the NHL are making roughly 20 times what the lowest paid are getting. But nobody really cares because they are all still making $500,000 per year. These athletes are worth these dollars because we, as consumers, will buy seats to the games, watch them on TV and buy lots of what the advertisers are selling. The free market has a way of figuring out what everybody is worth, whether in sports or business or anywhere else. The only way to see if an athlete is getting paid too much is to look at what a comparable player in the league is making, and there are a lot of variables there. Looking at offensive production

isn’t always enough. In fact, it rarely is. To say Andrew Ladd doesn’t deserve his $4.5 million a year contract but Erik Cole does, you really have to look at a lot of information. Even age is a big factor. Maybe Ladd doesn’t have all the upside Cole did in his heyday, but Ladd is 25 and entering his prime, while Cole is 32 and is now exiting his and entering his golden years of professional hockey. It’s only individual sports like golf where the athletes truly make what they earn. In golf, you either are the best on the course and make a big pay day that week, or you miss the cut and are paying for that cheap hotel and all the travel expenses to the next event yourself. Well, there’s always sponsorship. In golf, players don’t go to the tour and say, “I’m ranked top-10 on the tour, I want top-10 dollars.” If you are ranked 217th and place seventh in a tournament, you make seventh place money, while the No. 1 ranked golfer who placed eighth makes eighth place money that week. That could be the only pay day all year for that guy ranked 217th, so I’d say he’s earned it.

Fake tan look is so not in The other day I went to the gym. I hadn’t tied my shoes beforehand, something I usually do, nor had I been in the newly renovated gym in the Leisure Centre. Fortunately for me, there was a wrinkly, orange leather chair sitting by the door. An odd place for a chair, I thought, but as I didn’t feel like kneeling to tie my laces, the chair seemed like a good option. With much gusto, I threw myself into the seat, assuming that I would sink slightly into the chair’s wrinkly and obviously worn-out cushion. Imagine my surprise when the chair put up quite a bit of resistance, and actually stood up. For this had not been a chair at all, but rather two 40-year-old women who had somehow managed to achieve the same shade of orange in their skin, blending seamlessly together. Extremely embarrassed, I apologized profusely, trying to explain how I had mistaken them sitting together for a worn-out arm chair. They seemed unconcerned and laughed off my apology, saying that this hadn’t been the first time one of them had been sat on in a public place. They

Tonaya Marr Maybe It’s Just Me walked out discussing their upcoming thirty minute tanning sessions, while I stood there blushing like crazy, still not wearing my runners. OK, I admit that much of this story was falsified. For one, and probably the most obvious, I’ve never stepped foot in the newly remodelled version of the Leisure Centre gym. But the over-tanned women who at first glance resembled orange furniture are only slightly exaggerated. The fact that exposure to the ultraviolet radiation found in suntan beds causes premature wrinkling and aging of skin is, however, completely true. This constant exposure can also cause skin cancer, mutate DNA, and harm the immune system. Summed up, suntan beds make you look like a wrinkly old chair, and what’s going on inside your body isn’t much better.

I, as a pasty white person, understand the appeal of dark, healthy looking skin. One only needs to briefly look at my family to see how good a person can look with a bit of a tan. And I’m guilty of hitting the tanning bed myself before heading on tropical vacations, and before graduating from high school. Obviously I, and many others like me, have taken the risks associated with suntan beds. It’s the constant tanning, the addiction, that freaks me out. I have better things to do with my time than spend 30 minutes killing my body while simultaneously giving myself the appearance of an oompa loompa. I can roll in a bag of Doritos for quite a bit less money, and with fewer health effects. So crawl out of your tanning beds before it’s too late. There are enough cancer-causing agents floating around to worry about without purposely subjecting yourself to them. Also, I would prefer to age somewhat naturally, develop wrinkles because of life experiences and adventures, rather than look like I’m 19 than 30. Gross.

Spectra Place shop tries to balance quality, convenience The only shop inside Spectra Place opened last week, with a perfect view of the ice surface that sits below. Owners of Excessive Sports, Chris and Judy Istace, said there is a balance to be struck in a store that sits in a community building that includes a swimming pool, gym, hockey rink and running

path. That’s a balance between merchandise of convenience, or a lowerend product that people don’t mind picking up if they forget something, and all the higher-end product for the “athlete.” “We want to really make sure we have the product for the athlete, something that specializes to their market and what

11072UU00

Judy and Chris Istace show off their newly opened store Excessive Sports. The shop is the only one in the nearly completed Spectra Place sports complex. they do,” said Chris, adding that, “The store isn’t (always) the destination, (Spectra Place) is the destination. You’re working with that.” Tenders went out a couple of years ago for bids to be placed on a store. The Istaces’ vision for what Spectra Place could use was ultimately selected and has now been brought to life. Having a diverse range of sports equipment available in the community is growing more necessary as water sports, football and others grow in ubiquity.

11072DD01

“It’s great to see the kids who got football going,” said Chris. “I couldn’t believe, when we first moved here there was no football. It’s awesome to see that. Soccer’s growing exponentially. With lacrosse and the broomball, there’s so much going on.” He added that it’s important to support those sports, making sure people have local access to the equipment needed to enjoy those pastimes. That support isn’t just about providing the goods, but also supporting the programs themselves. “Every sports organization, everybody who comes through our doors, we support. Anybody who needs a donation of any kind, we’ve never said no.” Both Chris and Judy agree, that is a business philosophy they share. “You’re nothing, absolutely nothing without the people who walk in the door. That’s what matters,” he said. “I like the idea of

people who come in the door and feel like it’s their store.” “It’s like the Cheers philosophy,” said Judy. “They love coming in and everybody knows their name.” The shop was originally scheduled to move in and open up in February, and while the delay and uncertain opening time meant there were some issues with ordering product, small orders were placed in the absence of a structured timeline. They have also been canvassing what people want from the store, as the two owners don’t want to tell people what they need. Fulfilling a local need keeps money within the community. The Istaces are also working on an agreement with the Estevan Bruins junior A team to be their official licensed products vendor. “We’re going to be selling all of their apparel

during the games,” said Chris. “They’ve also never had the opportunity to sell their product outside of the game, but it’ll be here (all the time). That’s a major part of a team. Your logo. Your identity. You want your identity in the community.” The couple has owned a store for nearly decade in town and will continue to operate it in conjunction with XS-iV. Chris said, “It seems to be in all the brand new facilities, there’s an outlet. So five years ago, when the rink was being designed, they incorporated that. That was the intention ... to have something along those lines.” Being in business locally for so many years, Chris said they had an idea of what Estevan still needed, and Judy submitted all the paper work for their proposal. Chris said it was thanks to their experience in the community that they had the best plan in town.

In a victory for students everywhere, the parents lost. • You probably know that the Chinese script is made up of ideograms: pictures that represent objects or ideas. The first time was in 1865, when he was with his father after he was shot at Ford’s Theatre. In 1881, Lincoln, who was then serving as Secretary of War, arrived at Union Station shortly after President James A. Garfield had been shot. Finally, in 1901, he was at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y., when President William McKinley was assassinated. • The vast nation of China is home to half of all the world’s domesticated pigs. *** Thought for the Day: “I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.” -- Noel Coward (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Should public nudity be decriminalized?

He She He She Said By: Jordan Baker

The case of the man’s right to buy a cup of coffee in the nude is being heard in an Ontario court this week. It is currently illegal to be naked in any public setting. Anyone who does so is a criminal under the eyes of the law. First off, I don’t want to see naked people walking down the street all day, but if this law is overruled that just won’t be the case. The number of people who will exercise this right will be minimal. I remember women getting the right to be topless in all public places in Ontario in the 1990s. I haven’t seen one topless woman on a beach since. That’s fine. People don’t need to exercise their rights. I won’t exercise my nudity right if I ever get one. We do however, deserve access to those freedoms. The important thing isn’t that people take advantage of every little bit of leeway they have. It’s important that people are free to do as they please, as long as they aren’t hurting anyone. While the complainants in this public nudity case said they felt “uncomfortable,” a little discomfort isn’t enough to criminalize people for doing something that really doesn’t affect anyone else in a meaningful way. There is a Ben Harper lyric: “Your choice is who you choose to be, and if you’re causing no harm then you’re all right with me.” He wasn’t singing about public nudity. He was singing about marijuana, but those words still sum up the whole argument. If you aren’t hurting someone, and you aren’t hurting yourself, go for it. Should naked people really be considered criminals just because some people feel uncomfortable? The lawyers for the defendant argued the laws aren’t meant to protect the prudish, and they’re right. Laws are meant to protect people. People don’t need protection from nudists.

I admit that it would be weird and often gross to see naked people casually roaming Estevan streets. It would certainly be shocking, in our society where clothing is both a statement and a social norm. Over time, though (and I mean lots and lots of time), if nudity were legalized, public nudity would be something accepted. It would stop being shocking, like women wearing pants or men wearing makeup have ceased to be surprising in their respective time periods. I mean, there are always going to be those who chose to persecute people for being different, but in some ways, nudity makes sense. For one, what purpose does swim wear honestly serve? I’ve seen infants wearing more material than many of the itty bitty bikinis sported at the Boundary Dam beach. So many of these swimsuits are so tiny and so revealing that those who wear them basically are already naked. Of course, it makes perfect sense to bundle up in seven layers before heading outdoors in the middle of February in this dear province. But on a day like those we have been experiencing lately, clothing is doing nothing more than making you hotter. Sure, clothing can block your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, but so can sunscreen, which should be worn anyway. Plus there are always days where getting out of bed and getting dressed before heading out into the world just isn’t appealing. Legalizing nudity is perfect for this! Just skip the “getting dressed” part and head out of the house. All jokes aside, decriminalizing public nudity would hardly be a big deal. People are likely too stuck in their ways to stop wearing clothing, and many of us view clothing as a form of self-expression. I think that giving people the choice would be reasonable, though unlikely to lead to many huge changes in society.

The grandparent effect I remember as a child how I adored my Nana. She was one of my favourite people, so kind, so caring and she was always on my side. When I wasn’t allowed to get my ears pierced, Nana stepped in and they got done. When life was feeling all too hard, Nana was there with chicken soup and a kind word. She always shared her wisdom in the most unique way, and she corrected me without me really realizing it. My Nana was a small woman (maybe five-feet tall), but in my young and now older eyes, she was a giant. I’m sure she had her shortcomings, her challenges in life like the rest of us, but I saw none. I saw strength, courage, wisdom and kindness. She was my Nana after all. Nana had an interesting role in our family. She was a great support to my parents, when it came to us kids. Nana’s house was always open to us; she always welcomed us with open arms. There was always a bed ready for us, cash on hand if we needed it, and she could whip up a hot meal and fill our tummies in what seemed like minutes. She played games with us, helped us with our schoolwork, told us stories and always connected the family dots. (Uncle who? How’s that person related to me?) Nana also served as a sounding board for us. When we thought our

MacArthur Speech Q: I have a set of four 78-rpm records of General Douglas MacArthur’s Farewell Address to Congress in April 1951. Would these be considered collectible? -- M.F.E., Fairbury, Ill. A: The MacArthur recordings were issued by several companies, including RCA Victor. Although your recordings are interesting, they are not necessarily rare. I contacted several serious collectors and they seemed to agree that, in excellent condition, the set of 78s would probably sell in the $25 to $35 range.

Susan Sohn Welcome to Real Life parents were being unreasonable, we’d ask Nana. When we felt they were being too hard on us, we’d go to Nana. Oh that poor lady. I think now of all the stuff she dealt with and how it never seemed to faze her. Our parents also used Nana in their favour. An example of that would be the time I stole a piece of gum from the IGA (sorry, Mr. and Mrs. White). If my parents making me return to the IGA to admit my guilt and pay for the gum wasn’t enough, they then made me stand in front of Nana and tell this sweet, gentle, kind, little lady what I’d done. Of course as the years went on, situations escalated from the gum incident to other things - thankfully not remaining in theft. Things more like bad report cards, talking back to our parents and then, of course, the peer pressure incidents. Getting in trouble was emotional enough on its own, but the real sting came when we had to disappoint Nana. What clever parenting and discipline our parents used on all of us. The grandparent effect was huge

for me because as I’ve mentioned, my Nana was an extraordinary person in my life. Now, as a grown woman and as a mother of three, I too have adopted the grandparent effect. I have seen it work wonders in our home. Most recently, our eldest was “caught out” in a very minor situation that required parental intervention (a table discussion). Following our healthy discussion, I told her that going forward, part of her discipline would be to call her grandmother (my mother) and tell her what had happened and why she had found herself in “hot water.” At the thought of this, my daughter burst into tears. She wept saying, “No, please don’t make me do it, I never want to disappoint Grandma.” I cuddled her and said, “Well then my sweetheart, whenever you are faced with a decision or are tempted in anyway, just imagine yourself standing in-front of Grandma, telling her about it. It’s called The grandparent effect, darling, and trust me I know it works.” Friends, never underestimate the grandparent effect. Adopt it as one of your tools and make it your own. Extended family is there, like my Nana, to support, to love, to be a soft place to land and in some cases perhaps a simple look of disappointment from a respected grandparent is all that is needed.

I am very proud of my daughter, who brought home her Grade 1 report card last week. She got 4’s across the board in everything except reading French. Very impressive. Straight 4’s. Whatever that means. The school year began with an information session for the parents, explaining the new “outcome-based reporting” system that would be implemented this year. There were a number of confused parents, myself included. I had a little debate with the principal after the session, and I gave her a book. Let me state that I have more skin in the game here than just having my daughter in school. One of my best friends, teacher Michael Zwaasgstra, M.Ed., wrote a book last year along with two University of Manitoba education professors called What’s Wrong With Our Schools and How Do We Fix Them. Michael has been on talk shows across the country as well as the front page of the National Post’s website. He’s been writing policy pieces for the Frontier Centre of Public Policy for at least a decade. It was his book that ended up in the hands of Katrina’s principal. About a month ago, I was invited by the school to take part in a focus group of parents to discuss the new reporting system. It was unlike other focus groups I have taken part in. There was no recorder, for instance, taking notes of responses. One of the five people who showed up (less than half the invitees) was herself an educator - giving me the impression of a

were strident in their slagging of percentages; that they really don’t say much, and that teachers can and do manipulate them (think bell curve here). I would say then the issue is with teachers’ implementation of the system, not parents’ understanding. I know that if a person gets a 77 per cent, they for the most part understand the subject, and will typically get three-quarters of the answers correct. I also pointed out during the focus group that the outside world understands percentages, and uses numerical reporting all the time (something the educators definitely did not agree with). Students’ marks are no longer penalized for handing in late assignments these days either, a fundamental flaw in the new thoughts of evaluation. While the senior educator said his staff isn’t penalized getting something in late, I pointed out that in my business, when the paper goes to press, there are no extensions. Deadlines are hard and unforgiving in the real world. Apparently kids don’t need to know that. Michael noted the purpose of the focus group was to say that yes, they had consulted with parents, providing validation should anyone question this new system of reporting. With no one reporting on what I said, and the leader of the focus group essentially arguing with me as opposed to recording my concerns, I question how valid such “validation” is. From the Top of the Pile stacked deck. Let’s just say I had some lively input for this focus group. Fundamentally, the changes to the reporting system are designed to give more information to the parents, a laudable goal. There were 43 areas of evaluation, as opposed to the math, science, social studies, etc. that I had on my report cards as a young lad. Areas that saw more detailed attention included student behaviour, which had seven sub-categories. But the rubric (standard) used for these areas leaves much to be desired. It is obvious the system is taking great pains to get rid of things most of us understand, like percentages or A, B, C grades. Instead they use a four point system: 4 - achieving the outcome; 3 - approaching the outcome; 2 - beginning to achieve the outcome; 1 - not yet achieving the outcome. This is similar to the standards the military uses for its practical training - can the soldier meet the standard to load and fire his rifle or not, or does he need some help? The difference here is that children’s evaluation needs to be more defined than that. I tried, with little success, to squeeze out of the teacher whether Katrina is excelling as a student or not. The 4 does not say that. It says they can do it, but not whether they do it exceptionally well, or they simply get it done. The focus group leader, and the principal last fall,

Arrested in Saskatoon, expect medical check PROVINCIAL SASKATOON - A new agreement with Saskatoon police and the health region means that anyone who is arrested will be checked for a medical condition. The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations and Saskatoon Tribal Council signed the deal Tuesday. FSIN vice-chief Morley Watson says the reason for making this agreement stems from past incidents where people were arrested and in fact needed medical attention. He thinks this will help improve relations between the police and aboriginal people. *** SASKATOON - The Saskatoon Health Region hopes that by the end of next year, no one in its jurisdiction who needs surgery will have to wait longer than 12 months for their procedure. It also plans to have any patient requiring surgery for invasive cancer to be on the operating table within three weeks of their diagnosis. Maura Davies, president and C-EO of the health region, announced the goals Wednesday when she delivered the organization’s year-end report. Davies says more than 34,000 surgeries were carried out during the 2010-2011 fiscal year, with a target of 36,000 procedures set for the months ahead. *** REGINA - Saskatchewan’s privacy commissioner says the province is “bedevilled” by a large number of privacy breaches. Gary Dickson says in his annual report that he believes the pattern will continue until there are serious consequences for those who break privacy laws. Dickson says some breaches involved carelessness at organizations and others involved workers who looked at records when they weren’t supposed to. He says Saskatchewan’s 19-yearold privacy law needs to be substantially revised. The commissioner also says

Saskatchewan’s approach to access to information is at odds with modern expectations. He says people shouldn’t have to rely on snail mail and wait 30 days or more to get information that could be accessed more quickly electronically. NATIONAL BRACEBRIDGE, Ont. - An Ontario court judge will hear arguments Tuesday about whether laws that make it a criminal offence to be nude in public are unconstitutional and should be struck down. Lawyers for Brian Coldin will argue it should not automatically be a criminal offence to be without clothes in public and that discretion of prosecuting people for being nude should be left up to police. Coldin has been on trial for an incident in which he was nude at a Tim Hortons and an A&W near Bracebridge in southern Ontario. *** TORONTO - The head of the Consumers Association of Canada says he’s shocked to see what a small proportion of dollars donated to the Canadian Cancer Society is going to research. Bruce Cran was reacting to a media report showing that over the last decade, the share of Cancer Society revenues earmarked for research has continually shrunk while the proportion for fundraising efforts has grown dramatically. The CBC program “Marketplace” analyzed the charity’s financial reports and found that money spent on research has been nearly cut in half — dropping to about 22 per cent this year from 40.3 per cent in 2000. The reports also show that fundraising is getting the greatest portion of donor dollars — up to 42.7 per cent in 2011 from 26 per cent in 2000. *** ST. JOHN’S, N.L. - The Newfoundland and Labrador government says it will spend $5 million to try to reduce the number of moose-vehicle accidents in the province. The government says it plans to launch pilot projects involving the

erection of wildlife fencing and placement of animal detection systems near roadways. The projects would be located on sections of the Trans-Canada Highway in different parts of the province. The government says it has already made an effort to cut down on the number of collisions involving moose, including increasing the number of hunting licences. INTERNATIONAL BEIRUT - Syrian security forces may have committed crimes against humanity during a deadly siege of a western town in May, Amnesty International said Wednesday, citing witness accounts of deaths in custody, torture and arbitrary detention. The London-based rights group called on the U.N. Security Council to refer the situation in Syria to the International Criminal Court. The security sweep in Talkalakh, which lasted less than a week, contributed to a growing sense of desperation over the government’s brutal crackdown on protests as the nationwide uprising against President Bashar Assad’s authoritarian regime gained traction. Amnesty’s report came a day after Syrian security forces and gunmen loyal to the regime shot dead 14 people as troops advanced on the central city of Hama, which has become a flashpoint of the country’s uprising. *** MADRID - Police say a Dutch tourist has been found alive 18 days after she fell in a hole while walking in mountains in southern Spain. Civil Guard spokesperson Hector Ortega said Wednesday that a group of mountaineers had found Mary Anne Goossens, 48-years old, caught among boulders close to the source of the Chillar River outside the resort town of Nerja early Wednesday. The mountaineers were unable to rescue Goossens, but left her food and clothing before alerting regional emergency services. She was reported to be weak but uninjured.

forming links into the RM both north-south and eastwest and tackling road issues that limit or no longer allow access to dwellings within the municipality. “Those areas that are impeding access to houses (is a primary concern),” said Greg Hoffort, RM administrator. He noted it’s not only access to homes, but also access for farmers and businesses that need to get back to normal. In order to assist with flood repair work, council resolved to buy a 16 inch PTO pump, at a cost of $15,000. Hoffort said they were still awaiting delivery of the pump but hoped to have it operating early next week. The pump can filter through 18,000 gallons of water per minute. The RM also approved abatements for houses that were vacated following the flooding. After the RM’s regular sitting of council on July 5, work began in the southwest corner of the municipality to remove a temporary bridge that was installed near the south access to the road to Raf-

“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” by Ransom Riggs (Quirk Books, $17.99) Reviewed by Ealish Waddell Growing up, Jacob loved to listen to the stories his grandfather told of his own youth. A refugee from wartorn Poland, he spent the war years in a bright, pleasant orphanage on a remote island in Wales, surrounded by friends who could literally do wonders -- levitate, walk around invisible, lift boulders, talk to animals. He even has photographs of them, tiny portraits of solemn-eyed children doing very weird things. And he always insisted they were as real as he was. Then Jacob’s grandfather dies suddenly and horribly, and in the aftermath, a traumatized Jacob begins to question what exactly is true. He is determined to make a pilgrimage to see the legendary orphanage and its remaining residents for himself. But in Wales he finds only a crumbling old pile atop a hill, an abandoned

ferty Dam. Large culverts will be installed to replace the bridge. Council has planned to re-establish several other roads that were cut to prevent washouts in other places in the southwest corner. Road bans were again extended for two more weeks on July 5, but council will review the road conditions in one week. An extension of the local state of emergency was approved as well, and will carry on for another week due to the overland flooding and limited access to properties that continues to be a concern across the municipality. Council approved $500 contributions to both the Bienfait Canada Day celebrations and the Estevan Exhibition Association Rodeo. Road-haul agreements were approved for two oil companies inside the RM and council also approved the location for an oil battery. The municipality also approved a plan of proposed subdivision for eight single-parcel country residential subdivisions. wreck destroyed by a bomb in the early days of the war. No one has lived there for a very long time. And then he hears voices ... Thus Jacob finally meets the peculiar children and discovers that the truth of his grandfather’s tales is even stranger than he could ever have imagined. And it quickly becomes clear that his new friends are in grave danger from a doom that Jacob has unwittingly led right to their door. Now, he may be the only one who can save them. The atmosphere of this novel is exquisitely weird, blending the musty oddness of an old-fashioned children’s tale with a contemporary energy, all tinged with a persistent underlying creepiness that gives the reader a good kind of shivers. And, brilliantly, the vintage photographs that Jacob describes are sprinkled throughout the pages, giving force to the narrative in a subtle, visceral way. Actually looking upon the faces of the peculiar children themselves gives the reader just enough of a twinge that it isn’t difficult to believe that maybe, just maybe, they aren’t simply a story. Canadian women endure worst outing at World Cup NATIONAL SAN JOSE, Calif. The San Jose Sharks have traded forward Dany Heatley to the Minnesota Wild for forward Martin Havlat. The trade Sunday is the second major deal this off-season between the two teams. San Jose acquired all-star defenceman Brent Burns from Minnesota late last month for a package headlined by Devin Setoguchi. The 30-year-old Havlat had 22 goals and 40 assists in 78 games last season. He has 209 goals and 303 assists in a 10-year career with Minnesota, Chicago and Ottawa. The Sharks acquired Heatley from Ottawa two years ago, hoping he would be the piece that lifted them to the Stanley Cup. He had 39 goals his first season but only 26 last year. He also scored five goals in 32 playoff games with San Jose. *** DRESDEN, Germany - Zero points, one goal, three shots on net — bleak numbers that add up to Canada’s worst-ever performance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Canada (0-3) capped a disastrous World Cup campaign by losing 1-0 to Nigeria on Tuesday in a game marked by a 12-minute power outage, a fitting farewell to a Canadian squad that had gone into Germany with huge hopes but fizzled on the world’s stage. Now the Canadians face an uncertain future just six months out from the qualifying tournament for the 2012 London Olympics. INTERNATIONAL LONDON - West Ham is suing a British newspaper and fellow football club Tottenham over allegations of corruption in its bid to

take over the Olympic Stadium after London 2012. West Ham released a statement in which it “absolutely and categorically” denied claims by The Sunday Times that the club made secret payments to an executive on the Olympic Park Legacy Company, the body that chose the preferred tenant of the 486 million pound (US$777 million) east London venue. OPLC unanimously selected West Ham over a bid from Tottenham. “Legal action is being taken against the Sunday Times, as well as Tottenham Hotspur,” the West Ham statement read. *** AUCKLAND, New Zealand - A 17-year-old has won a court case allowing him to take part in swim meets after his parents tried to stop him competing in order to end his relationship with an American Olympic gold medallist who is seven years older. Justin Wright was forced into the action when his parents withdrew the parental consent needed to compete in Swimming New Zealand events, thinking that would prevent him seeing 24-year-old Rhi Jeffrey. The Herald on Sunday reported that Wright met Jeffrey at the West Auckland Aquatic Club, and the pair became involved in a romantic relationship. Jeffrey, who won gold with the American 4x200meter freestyle relay team at Athens in 2004, had moved to Auckland to try to qualify for next year’s Olympics with her New Zealand coach. *** ZURICH - Suspended FIFA official Mohamed bin Hammam will face its ethics committee on July 22 to answer allegations of bribery during his presi-

dential election campaign, football’s governing body said Wednesday. The case against bin Hammam, the Qatari president of the Asian Football Confederation, and Caribbean Football Union employees Debbie Minguell and Jason Sylvester has been built with help from a team of former FBI agents hired by FIFA. “The three officials have received the report on the investigations conducted by the ethics committee since May 29, and have been invited to present their position in writing prior to the meeting,” FIFA said in a statement. The ethics panel, chaired by Namibian judge Petrus Damaseb, will hear all three cases on July 22 and begin its deliberations the next day. *** NEW YORK, N.Y. - The NBA players’ association maintains that there is an “adequate basis” for doubting the NBA’s losses, citing the inaccurate financial projections the league made in 2009-10. The union’s assertion Wednesday came a day after a report questioned whether the league indeed lost money two seasons ago. Though the NBA says it lost US$340 million in 2009-10, a New York Times blog post Tuesday titled “Calling Foul on NBA’s Claims of Financial Distress” called the league “fundamentally a healthy and profi table business” with an estimated operating income of $183 million that season. Union spokesman Dan Wasserman said the NBA projected a decline in revenues that season but they actually rose, so the final losses should have been much less than the league said.

“The Murder of the Century: The Gilded Age Crime That Scandalized a City and Sparked the Tabloid Wars” by Paul Collins (Crown, $26) Reviewed by Larry Cox It isn’t easy to blow the dust off a century-old murder and keep it as exciting, engaging and relevant as when the crime first occurred. Writer Paul Collins has done just that, reporting the details of a ghastly Victorian murder that was nothing short of sensational. On the afternoon of June 26, 1897, two boys playing near a pier on the Lower East Side of New York discovered what turned out to be the floating torso of a man wrapped in oilcloth. Later, berry pickers near Harlem stumbled upon neatly severed limbs in an overgrown ditch, while on Long Island, a farmer was startled to find that his duck pond had turned red with blood. Police were baffled,

since the head was missing and there appeared to be no witnesses, no motives, no positive identification and no suspects. The only real clue was the oilcloth used to wrap the various body parts. It was such a gaudy pattern that few pieces had been sold, and police were able to connect the dots back to a woman involved in a lurid love triangle that eventually led to one of the most riveting trials New York had ever seen. As Collins explains, it was a complex murder. The victim had been lured from Manhattan, murdered in Queens and then had his body parts scattered over three boroughs. As competing newspaper moguls Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst helped turn the murder into a media circus, the combined efforts of an eccentric professor, an anxious cop and a cub reporter finally helped crack the case. By deftly putting the characters, the event and the festering underbelly of the Gilded Age into historical context, Collins has produced one of the most exciting true-crime books of the summer.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Our grandson soon will be 15. He still wets the bed. His parents have done everything from pills to alarms, but nothing helps. Sometimes he gets depressed, and that scares us. He says he will never be able to have a relationship with a girl. Sometimes we worry that he will hurt himself. Is there anything that can help this situation? -- W.M. ANSWER: I feel deeply for your grandson. No one can understand the isolation and hopelessness he has to grapple with. He could stand professional counseling. Perhaps a few facts will help him. Between the ages of 5 and 6, 15 percent to 20 percent of children are still wetting the bed. Of that number, every following year, 15 percent will stay dry during the night. By age 18, only 1 percent to 2 percent of these youngsters are still battling the problem. Your grandson has three years in which his chances of gaining control are good. The problem of bedwetting appears to stem from a brain that doesn’t respond to a full nighttime bladder by rousing the sleeper. It might be a delay in developing that response. Or it might be a delay in the attainment of a large enough bladder capacity to hold nighttime urine production. Or it might be that these children produce too little of the hormone vasopressin, which suppresses nightly urine formation. Your grandson can once more try things he probably has already tried. He should measure carefully how much fluid he drinks in one day. Once he learns that number, he should drink 40 percent of the total

in the morning, another 40 percent in the afternoon and limit fluid to 20 percent of the daily total from 5 p.m. on. He can increase his bladder’s capacity by holding off on urinating during the day. If he delays each time by five or 10 minutes for one week and then gradually lengthens the delay in following weeks, the bladder will stretch. This takes time. He has to be patient. Alarms can work. They sound or vibrate when the first few drops of moisture touch them. It can be as long as six months of use before the training takes hold. For occasions when he is invited to stay at other people’s homes for the night, desmopressin, as a pill or nasal spray, slows nighttime urine production. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am so concerned about our grandson. He is a senior in college. He felt he couldn’t focus well enough on some of his difficult classes. He went to a doctor and was put on Adderall. I am so worried that he will become addicted. Should I be concerned? -- R.G. ANSWER: Adderall is a drug of the amphetamine family. It does have the potential of leading to dependence. However, it’s been used for so many years for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder that it can be well managed and not present a danger. The doctor who prescribed the drug is responsible for monitoring how it is used. He or she will continue writing for its use only if it’s safe to do so. I sincerely believe you do not have to worry yourself about your grandson. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Slow-Cooker Summer We’re having record high temperatures in my home state of Texas. The heat seems to bring out my creativity, as I’ve devised a number of ways to continue to enjoy my favorite meals and desserts without using my oven. My slow cooker is often used in the wintertime for soups and savory dishes, but I’ve discovered that it’s perfect for the summer months as well. The slow cooker can be used, with a few adaptations, for many recipes that are traditionally prepared in the oven. Most slow cookers are sold with a recipe booklet. Expanding on the suggested slow cooker recipes to incorporate ones that usually require baking time in the oven is a great way to conserve energy and keep your home cool. This easy SlowCooked Fruit Cobbler is the perfect way to avoid using your oven on a hot summer day. The recipe retains all of the fruity flavors of an old-fashioned baked cobbler without using as much heat. If you’re grilling outside, dessert can be slowly cooking inside and cooling while dinner is served. It’s the perfect finish to a summer meal.

S L O W- C O O K E D FRUIT COBBLER You can use stemmed and sliced fresh or frozen berries in this recipe instead of the apples or peaches with great results! If you don’t have buttermilk on hand, you can make a good substitute by adding a 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice to 1/2 cup of milk. Stir and let it set for 10 minutes before using as directed in the recipe. 4 cups peeled, seeded and sliced apples or peaches (fresh, frozen or canned) 2 tablespoons butter, softened, or butter-flavored cooking oil spray 1 1/2 cups sugar, stevia sugar substitute or agave syrup 2 tablespoons flour 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Biscuit topping: 1 1/2 cups flour 1/4 cup sugar, plus more for sprinkling 4 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup cold butter, cubed 1/2 cup buttermilk Grease bottom and sides of a slow cooker with a removable pot insert with the butter or cooking-oil spray. Add in fruit, sugar, flour, lemon juice and vanilla. Stir to combine. Biscuit Topping: 1. Using a large bowl,

mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Cut in the butter with a fork or the tips of your fingers until crumbly. Add buttermilk and stir with a fork to make a slightly sticky dough. With floured hands, gather dough into a ball. 2. On lightly floured surface, gently knead dough about 10 times until smooth. Pat the dough into a circle large enough to cover the berries in the slow cooker. Cut the dough into 8 wedges and arrange the wedges over the fruit. Sprinkle wedges with sugar. 3. Place top on slow cooker, and cook on high until the biscuit topping is no longer doughy underneath, about 3 hours. Remove pot insert and let cobbler cool, uncovered, for about an hour before serving. Serve with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream, if desired. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is known as The Kitchen Diva! ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’re not Sheepish when it comes to asserting your opinions on what you think is right or wrong. Be assured that you’re being heard, and something positive will follow. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your sense of justice makes it difficult not to speak up about a recurring matter involving a co-worker. But, once again, you need facts to back you up before you can act. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Romance is still dominant, and if Cupid misfired before, don’t worry. He’ll take better aim at someone new this time around. Expect favorable news about a financial matter. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The zodiac’s Moon Children can expect things to work out pretty much as planned. One negative note involves a minor relationship problem that suddenly turns serious. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re suddenly being asked to make choices between two practically equal offers. Which one to choose? Easy. The one most likely to gladden your Lion’s heart. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Once again, you’re confronted by a workplace problem you thought you’d already resolved. This time, you might need to go higher up to find a just resolution. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Good for you: You’re determined to stick with your goals and ignore

those naysayers who might try to discourage you. You’re on the right track. The challenge now is to stay on it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You’ll soon get news that is supposed to help you with a troublesome situation. Use your sharp Scorpion instincts to determine if the information is reliable. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) If you learn someone has betrayed your trust, don’t just accept it and walk away. You need to know why that person decided to do what he or she did. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A painful family relationship problem could finally begin to heal. Be prepared to show more flexibility than you might like. But it could be worth it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It’s a good idea to enhance your career skills so you’ll be prepared to accept a more responsible position when it’s offered. A friend returns a favor just when you need it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Show that strong, steely backbone that you usually hide, and demand to be included in any family decision-making that could affect the well-being of a loved one. BORN THIS WEEK: You can be happy being alone at home. But you also love exploring the world outside and meeting new people and sharing new ideas. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Dr. Donohue -- No. 801W, Box 536475. Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a pain that starts near my elbow and shoots down my arm to the little finger. It doesn’t happen all the time. I don’t know what brings it on. It just appears to happen for no reason. What could this be? -- E.J.

ANSWER: I’m sure you’ve heard of carpal tunnel syndrome. It’s due to a compression of a wrist nerve as it passes through a tunnel of ligaments and bones on its way to the hand and fingers. You describe something similar, compression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow. This nerve supplies the little finger and the adjacent side of the ring finger. Compression of the nerve causes the kind of symptoms you have. You can try a simple treatment, an elbow splint. Your wear it at night, and the elbow should be

bent about 60 degrees. Give it a week. If the pain doesn’t leave, you should have an exam. Other conditions can cause the same kind of pain. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Vertigo comes in spells lasting 20 minutes or more, and they leave the person off balance for several days. Tinnitus can be ringing, roaring, hissing or other sounds that

the Meniett device, a little gadget that creates pressure pulses that are transmitted to the inner ear. The pulses pump fluid out.Adoctor has to make a small hole in the eardrum so the pressure waves can make their way to the inner ear. An ear, nose and throat doctor can evaluate you and determine if you are a candidate for these treatments or for other treatments I haven’t discussed. The booklet on vertigo discusses its many causes and treatments. Readers can obtain a copy by writing:

come and go but eventually stay permanently. The same happens with episodes of hearing loss. It becomes a permanent problem in time. All these signs are due to a buildup of fluid in the inner ear, the place where hearing and balance take place. Treatment of Meniere’s focuses on ridding the inner ear of the fluid buildup. A strict low-salt diet goes a long way in reducing symptoms. The reason is that salt brings on fluid retention. Restricting caffeine and alcohol also helps. Diuretics -- water pills -- might be needed to get rid of the fluid. A hearing aid usually overcomes deafness. Dizzy spells are accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Antivert and Phenergan relieve all three. Should these measures fail, more-heroic efforts are called into play. One is an injection in the ear of the antibiotic gentamicin, which destroys the ear’s balance organ and eliminates dizziness. Another approach is

Safe Summer Fun Even in the northernmost reaches of the country, we’re now well into summer and its routine of barbecues, swimming and general outdoor fun. Of course, with all these activities, an element of risk is always present. Here are a few suggestions to keep your family and yourself safe this summer: • Keep barbecue grills at least 5 to 10 feet away from the house. Grills give off tremendous heat, which will melt vinyl siding easily and can cause a house fire. • Place a fire extinguisher near the grill when it’s in operation. • Prevent excess sparks and flare-ups on the grill: Heat the charcoal properly, and don’t place too many highfat items over the charcoal at once. If the fire flares up, close the grill lid for a few seconds, then open and remove greasy foods from the grill. • If using an inflatable swimming pool to entertain the kids, assign a responsible adult to watch the pool at all

times. Toddlers can drown in just a few inches of water. • The same goes for any type of backyard activity with children: Have a responsible adult supervise all activities to prevent accidents or stop kids from wandering off. • Repair or replace any broken or splintered outdoor furniture before your event, and put away lawn tools and pet toys. • Wear high-SPF sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses when outside on a sunny day. Drink plenty of water throughout the event, and limit alcohol consumption. • Check yourself and the family for ticks at the end of the day, and remove them immediately. You can reduce the chance of having one jump on you by trimming the grass beforehand, pruning back low-hanging tree branches, and wearing hats and long sleeves when possible. HOME TIP: Try using a charcoal starter to preheat charcoal more evenly; this provides more consistent heat and gives off fewer sparks. THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JULY 8, 2011

“Scrubbing Day Is a Holiday” “Squirt ... and slide, squirt ... and slide,” chant 7-year-olds Cy and his friend Jane, as they clean and polish hardwood floors to the beat of Beatles tunes. Simply put, they’re dancing away the grime! Reminiscent of the Pippi Longstocking caper where the unconventional Pippi and her best friends Tommy and Annika fastened scrub brushes to the bottom of their feet and breezed through mounting soap suds on the kitchen floor, singing “Scrubbing day, is a holiday!” Cy and his friends have discovered that cleaning floors can be playful in their homes, too. Inexpensive hand towels are wrapped under and over their feet and fastened together at the ankles with a thick rubber band. When the music blasts through the speakers in the family room, on cue they grab decorated plastic water bottles filled with a vinegar/water cleaning solution (one part white vinegar to three parts water) and begin their “squirt ... and slide” routine to clean and shine the hardwood floors. “Keeping a home clean and organized can be lighthearted and fun,” says Cy’s dad, Tim Gleason, father of three and owner of a neighborhood car-repair shop. Even friends like to join in from time to time. When kids perform their version of adult tasks, responsibility triumphs. He coined a term -“Team Gleason” -- to encourage his young children to work together as a family

team when getting everyday jobs done. “’Done’ might not be the same standard I might set for myself, but who cares if there are a few streaks here or leftover spots there,” he concedes. “When doing summer chores, it’s really about being together, learning something new and connecting on common ground.” To motivate your kids to get into chores this summer, give them a fun tool, and they’ll be set. Here are some right tools for the right kid job: --99-cent plastic spray bottle. Anytime school-age kids can use a spray bottle, they can have fun. Fill with a safe natural cleaning solution for cleaning floors, kitchen counters, bikes and toys. Use in a well-ventilated area. Or, fill with plain water to spritz on plants. --Squeegee. Schoolage kids can wash easy-toreach windows while an adult follows with a clean cloth. --New, soft paintbrush. Lightly brush off dust from pleated lampshades. *** D o n n a E r i c k s o n ’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide.
