ECS students speak out against racism A number of Estevan Comprehensive School students took a stand against racism Monday. A group of students held an event in the school’s courtyard which included exhibits promoting multiculturalism. The event was held to mark the International Day to Eliminate Racial Discrimination which has been recognized each year on March 21 since 1960. ECS teacher and one of the organizers, Ashley Cote, said she was happy with the turnout by students who organized booths and those who stopped by to check them out. She noted two new groups to ECS played a major role in setting Monday’s activities. “The Rebels is a social justice group at ECS and
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Regarding your upcoming challenges, the Aries Lamb should very quickly size things up and allow you to make the best possible use of whatever resources you have on hand. Good luck. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You rarely blame others for missteps that worked against you. But this time you need to lay out all the facts and insist that everyone acknowledge his or her share of the mistakes. Then start again. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might want to start making vacation plans. And don’t be surprised by unexpected family demands. Maintain control. Be open to suggestions, but don’t get bogged down by them. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Work with both your Moon Child and Crab aspects this week to keep both your creative and your practical sides balanced. Your intuition sharpens, giving you greater insight by the middle of the week. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat finally should have all the information needed to move on with a project. If not, maybe you’ll want to give everything a new and more thorough check
the Culture Crew, we both got together to brainstorm what we could do and this is what we came up with,” said Cote who noted the theme was based on the celebrate diversity bracelets that are being sold at the school. “The Culture Crew is focused on cultural displays, we have information for newcomers and what we can do to end discrimination.” Cote added that events such as Monday’s are taking on a new level of importance at the school as the influx of newcomers to Estevan and area has created a much more diverse student body at ECS. “That was the whole focus of having the new group, the Culture Crew. These are both actually new groups this year.”
These Estevan Comprehensive School students sold bracelets to celebrate diversity Monday in the school’s courtyard. The bracelets were part of an event held by ECS students to recognize the international day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

You have other things you need to work on this week. Go to it, and good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good time to reassess where and how your strengths can help you build, and where your weaknesses
can hinder you. Remember to build on your strongest foundation. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) That personal matter that seemed so hard to deal with should be less confusing now. Don’t rush. Let things happen easily, without the risk of creating even more puzzlement. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Change continues to be a strong factor in many important areas. Keep on top of them, and you won’t have to worry about losing control. A personal situation takes on a new look. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A business offer sounds intriguing. But if you don’t
check it out thoroughly, you could have problems. Take a set of questions with you when you attend your next meeting. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your self-confidence should be coming back. That’s good news. But it might be a bit over the top right now, so
best to let it settle down before you start making expensive decisions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your life, your decisions. Good enough. But be sure you have all the facts you need to put into the decisionmaker mixing bowl and hope it will come out as
it should. BORN THIS WEEK: You fi nd much of your creativity with new people who give you much to think about.

New gate wins top prize at science fair Midale Central School hosted the 20th annual South East Regional Science Fair on March18. Winners at the fair were Midale Central seniors Codi Sjostrand and Glenn McGregor. Their project was S.M. Gates in the senior engineering category. The two students will be taking their project to compete at the national science fair in Toronto on the May 14th weekend. Last year’s senior winners, noted Midale principal Lloyd Morrison, received a scholarship to the University of Saskatchewan. Codi and Glenn describe their project as being invented to make life easier for one man to work by himself in the corral, keeping in mind safety concerns. “We came across the problem of having to get out of the tractor, when you are by yourself, to swing open your gate. By the time you crawled back into your tractor, the gap and open space created by the gate that was swung open made a hole for cows to go through, resulting in your cows getting out. To solve this problem we put the gate on an enclosed track so it could slide. We then rigged up a garage door opener to it. “So practically this is a lazy man’s gate as you simply sit in your tractor, and click the opener button so don’t have to get out. This gate is also safer as you don’t have to worry about it coming back at your face if a cow kicks or
head butts it ... and so on. This is a practical and cheap idea, and therefore we have improved the gate.” About 70 projects were on display in the Midale Gymnasium. The second place project, which will also send students to the national fair in Toronto was the one titled, The Effect of Energy Drinks. Students Austin Memiux and Shandi McMillan, of Carnduff won for that project. In the winners’ showcase, claiming third and fourth place were Jayda Beltel and Samantha Robertson of Avonlea, for their Hot Ashes project, and Outsmarted by a Computer, by Noah Rowbotham and Sheldon Daniel of Avonlea.
Seventy projects were displayed at the Midale Central School on March 18 for the regional science fair. Provincial minister of the environment Dustin Duncan (back left) was on hand to speak to the school and posed with the students.

Elections leave little to imagination The federal budget is out and as of this writing, nobody is impressed, and the campaigning is all but underway. Because an election hasn’t been called yet, I’m guessing everyone else has been holding their breath the same as I. Now I’m not entirely sure if I should be blue in the face from the absence of oxygen or red in the face because politics will just do that to me sometimes, so instead I’m settling for an unhealthy shade of purple. The current moment in Canadian politics feels a lot like it did in 2008. I get the feeling this election will result in another Conservative minority, with maybe a few Liberal gains. The Liberals should be able to make a small gain here or there however, as the last election was disastrous for their party. I like elections and following campaigns, but just like the last election I think many Canadians, like me, are a little weary of what looks to be another election where no ground will be gained anywhere. In 2008 there was a general mood that the Conservatives would maintain in control through a minority. That’s what they did. Everybody knew the outcome before a vote was cast. Maybe it’s all the polls and political analysis in the news. The experts chatter away for the duration of the campaign, and as it turns out the experts generally know what they’re talking about. Canadians were told up until election day to expect a Conservative minority. The last federal election had an abysmal participation rate. I’d like to think that’s because most Canadians were depressed at the thought of the Conservatives remaining in power, but that’s backwards logic. If you’re worried about that, don’t stay home, go vote. I think poor turnout was for two reasons.
Page 4
First, similar to this spring, in 2008 nobody really wanted to head to the polls again. Nothing has changed in two and a half years. Second, some people may feel powerless beneath the polls that tell you what the election outcome will be. There may be a perception that these polls are fatally accurate and beyond a powerful election-day mood. The 2008 election was frustratingly anti-climactic. I hope my minority Conservative prediction is wrong, but the feeling I get is that there will be no change of the political landscape in the near future. If that’s the case, the worst part about this premature election is that the country won’t be willing to take down the Conservatives at the polls for another three or four years. By then, Stephen Harper will have been in power for a decade. If the election results don’t surprise me, that fact certainly will.

High gas prices to remain until Libya stabilized NATIONAL MONTREAL - A coalition of scientists, artists and opposition politicians is calling for the closure of Quebec’s lone nuclear power plant. The group is pointing to ongoing events in Japan as proof of just how dangerous nuclear power can be. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is currently wrapping up consultations on the refurbishment of the Gentilly-2 plant located near TroisRivieres, Que. Provincial authorities say it will cost $2 billion to overhaul the aging power plant. Members of the Opposition Parti Quebecois were joined by an array of other critics in calling on the Quebec government to abandon its plans. *** CALGARY - There will be no relief from high gasoline prices so long as unrest continues in Libya, a petroleum analyst
said Tuesday, as coalition forces launched air strikes to enforce a no-fly zone in the North African country. “Gas prices will start to come down as soon as we’ve got this fiasco in Libya sorted out,” said Roger McKnight, a senior petroleum adviser with Oshawa, Ont.,-based EnPro International. Libya is a relatively small oil producer in the grand scheme of things, providing under two per cent of the crude needed to meet global demand. It is, however, a key supplier for Europe, and shipments have all but stopped as rebels battle troops loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. The supply worries have driven up the price of Brent crude, a benchmark oil produced in the North Sea. And that price runup has rippled around the world, McKnight said. *** EDMONTON - It was called “House of Cards,” a short film about a philan-
dering man dismembered for his sins, but prosecutors say the seven-minute gorefest was actually Mark Twitchell’s dress rehearsal for a murder. Twitchell, 32, is on trial in Court of Queen’s Bench in the death of Johnny Altinger on Oct. 10, 2008. The prosecution says it will prove that a week after Twitchell and his buddies made “House of Cards” in a rented garage, he carried out the same scenario for real. INTERNATIONAL LONDON - Conservationists say an oil slick from a wrecked ship is threatening endangered penguins on a remote British South Atlantic territory. T h e c a rg o v e s s e l MS Olivia ran aground on Nightingale Island in Tristan da Cunha last week and later broke up. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds says hundreds of penguins have
been coming ashore coated in oil. The territory’s conservation officer, Trevor Glass, said oil was encircling Nightingale Island and called the situation a disaster. Located midway between Africa and South America, the territory is home to nearly half the world’s northern rockhopper penguins. *** SANAA, Yemen - A spokesman for President Ali Abdullah Saleh says the Yemeni leader is willing to step down by the end of the year as part of a “constitutional” transfer of power. Ahmed al-Sufi told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Saleh informed senior Yemeni officials, military commanders and tribal leaders of his intention in meetings on Monday night. He said the president also vowed never to hand over power to the military. Saleh’s comments are
a reversal of his rejection earlier this month of an opposition proposal demanding his resignation by the year’s end. *** KABUL - Afghan President Hamid Karzai says his security forces will soon take charge of security in seven areas around the nation — the first step toward his goal of having Afghan police and soldiers protecting the entire nation by the end of 2014. In a speech Tuesday in Kabul, Karzai said
the provincial capitals of Lashkar Gah in southern Afghanistan, Herat in the west, Mazer-e-Sharif in the north and Mehterlam in the east are slated for transition from NATO-led forces to Afghan soldiers and police in July. He says all of Bamiyan and Panshir provinces, which have seen little to no fighting, are on the transition list. Also slated for transition is Kabul province, except for the restive Surobi district.

Holland moves up standings at world championship PROVINCIAL ESBJERG, Denmark Regina’s Amber Holland is on a nice roll at the Capital One world women’s curling championship. Holland’s rink defeated the United States 9-6 in the 11th draw Tuesday after dispatching the Czech Republic 7-4 earlier in the day. Canada has now won three straight games to boost its record to 4-3. “All wins are important this week,” Holland said. “So it was key for us to come out and get a couple of wins on the board to make sure we’re staying where we need to in the standings and we’re moving forward with what we need to do.” The Canadians moved into a tie with China, Denmark and Russia for third in the overall standings. Sweden’s Anette Norberg (6-1) sits in first, with Switzerland’s Mirjam Ott (5-2) close behind. NATIONAL MONTREAL - The Saint John Sea Dogs will

The 58-7-3 Sea Dogs repeated their first-place overall regular season of a year ago in even more convincing style, finishing 10 points better with 119 and leading the league with 324 goals scored and only 165 allowed. The 2009-10 season ended in heartbreak as the Sea Dogs were beaten in six games in an all-New Brunswick final by the Moncton Wildcats. ‘’This year there may be a little more experience and a little more depth,’’ coach Gerard Gallant said Tuesday. ‘’We were disappointed so hopefully we’ll have a great playoffs this year.’’ *** HAMILTON - Danny McManus has a new job with the Hamilton TigerCats. INTERNATIONAL PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Suspended Penguins agitator Matt Cooke says he sees the error in his ways. “I realize and understand, more so now than ever, that I need to change,” Cooke told Pittsburgh reporters Monday night. “That’s what I wanted my message to be.” Cooke was banned for the rest of the regular season and first round of the playoffs for elbowing Rangers defenceman Ryan McDonagh in the head. *** PHOENIX - The Goldwater Institute is still planning to legally challenge the proposed sale of the Phoenix Coyotes to Matthew Hulsizer despite the Chicago businessman’s willingness to change the terms of the deal. In a statement Monday, the institute said Hulsizer’s changes to the deal are a step in the right direction, but the terms of the sale are still unconstitutional under Arizona law and a risk to taxpayers. On Sunday, Hulsizer said he will guarantee US$75 million of the $100 million in bonds that the City of Glendale has agreed to sell to help fund the purchase of the team, currently owned by the NHL. He said the other $25 million was going to be paid in cash to the city. The Goldwater Institute said the revised deal still violates the Arizona state constitution regarding public financing of private transactions.
*** MINNEAPOLIS The NFL asked a federal judge Monday to keep its lockout in place, saying there are no legal grounds to stop it while accusing the players of trying to manipulate the law with a bogus antitrust lawsuit. The NFL filed its arguments in federal court in St. Paul, Minn., where U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson has scheduled an April 6 hearing on the players’ bid to stop the lockout. The NFL said any decision on a lockout should wait until the National Labor Relations Board rules on an unfair labour practice charge against the now-dissolved players’ union that contends the players failed to negotiate in good faith. The charge, filed Feb. 14, was amended on March 11 to include reference to the union’s decertification. The NLRB said the case is still under investigation and had no further comment.

Mitral Valve Prolapse Rarely a Health Threat DEAR DR. DONOHUE: About 40 years ago, when I was in my 30s, I was examined by a famous heart doctor who went over me with great care and concluded I had mitral valve prolapse. He put me on medicine, which I have taken to this day. He also insisted I take antibiotics before dental work. That doctor died, and my new doctor, quite young, says I don’t have mitral valve prolapse and that I don’t need medicine or antibiotics before dental work. He saw that I doubted him, so he had me get an echocardiogram. It showed no mitral valve problem. I still wonder about this. I can’t accept that my former doctor was wrong. -- J.P. ANSWER: The mitral

valve regulates blood flow from the upper left heart chamber -- the left atrium -- to the lower left heart chamber, the ventricle. When the ventricle contracts, it pumps blood out of the heart. Simultaneously the mitral valve closes to prevent backflow of blood into the left atrium. Mitral valve prolapse means that the mitral valve balloons upward into the left atrium during heart pumping and might leak blood. In the 1960s, around the time you were diagnosed with this condition, mitral valve prolapse was first described and became a very popular diagnosis. Many of those who were then given a diagnosis of it really didn’t have it. The condition was written about in newspapers and magazines, and dire consequences were ascribed to it. Now, with new knowledge of how this valve works and with new equipment such as echocardiograms (sound-wave pictures of the heart), a clearer picture of the mitral valve is obtainable. Most people who have a ballooning valve are not considered to have a serious
medical condition. In only a handful of these people does a significant leak of blood occur. Those are the people who require treatment, and those are the people who take antibiotics before certain dental procedures. Your doctor wasn’t wrong. He was a victim of the inadequate knowledge of that era. Heart-valve disease is quite common. The booklet on it describes the more prevalent varieties. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 105W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What is your opinion of prolotherapy? I have quite severe osteoarthritis in both thumbs and have been receiving cortisone injections for it. I was told that prolotherapy would be more effective than cortisone and that the relief would be longer-lasting. -- B.N. ANSWER: Prolother-
apy involves the injection of various substances around damaged ligaments and tendon attachments. It triggers inflammation. The inflammation, in turn, promotes healing by stimulating collagen formation. Often the material injected is dextrose (sugar) mixed with lidocaine (an anesthetic). Some reports say that it

ALL MY CHILDREN Upset about her mother being institutionalized, Emma took out her frustration on Greenlee. Marissa bid on Scott at the bachelor auction instead of JR. Later, JR warned Madison that Scott and Marissa were much closer than she was being led to believe. Kendall’s date was with Griffin, and she planned to use the
time to question him about the missing drugs. Wait to See: Jesse helps deliver his and Angie’s baby. “Dig This Gig: Find Your Dream Job -- Or Invent It” By Laura Dodd (Kensington Publishing, $14.95) Reviewed by Rose M. Croke With an estimated 14 million Americans currently “between jobs” and 84 percent of the working population interested in finding a new job or making a career move, it seems like much of today’s workforce is looking for meaningful work. In her first book, “Dig This Gig,” author Laura Dodd interviews 32 young adults, all of whom work at ordinary and extraordinary “gigs,” and describes the paths they took to find or create meaningful careers for themselves. Through candid conversations, Dodd provides in detail what work is really like in today’s fastestgrowing fields and most sought-after professions.
From “glamour gigs” like entertainment, news and government to green gigs, do-good ventures and healthcare jobs, “Dig This Gig” should be required reading for college students and “boomerang kids” facing the toughest job market in decades. Eight mentors who represent a cross section of corporate and non-profit organizations -- including veteran journalist Dan
Rather, Christina Norman, CEO of The Oprah Winfrey Network, and Frances Beinecke, president of the National Resources Defense Council -- also weigh in with their expert opinions and sage advice. Each chapter concludes with a pithy postscript, in which each subject reflects on what he or she would do differently if they had to do it all over again, and the three mandatory characteristics they think are needed for success in their chosen professions. Dodd doesn’t tritely
THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, MARCH 25, 2011 prod readers into thinking they can be whatever they want to be if they just put their minds to it. Instead, readers get real-life career profiles from those who dug in deep and endured -- the sweat, the tears, the ecstatic highs and despairing lows, and the unforeseen setbacks -- to find the career paths that work for them. “Dig This Gig” reminds workers of all ages that in order to blaze your own path, it’s often up to you to fuel the fire. Don’t Shy Away From Shrimp If you’ve taken shrimp off the menu because you have fears about high amounts of cholesterol, there is good news. You don’t have to give up shrimp! Research shows and dietitians concur that the high percentage of “good fats” in shrimp reduces the impact of cholesterol. So, enjoy shrimp as part of a balanced and delicious diet. In addition to being a great source of high-quality protein, shrimp is rich in health-enhancing nutrients. It also is low in fat and calories. Here are just a few reasons to place shrimp on your menu: Vitamin D: Four ounces of shrimp provide almost
half the daily requirement of vitamin D, also known as the sunshine vitamin. Vitamin D helps build strong bones, maintain a healthy immune system and also may lower the risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and colon cancer. Selenium: A serving of shrimp can provide 65 percent of the daily selenium requirement. This powerful antioxidant has been linked to a lower risk of certain cancers and also promotes healthy function of the thyroid gland. Vitamin B-12: Four ounces of shrimp provide a third of the daily requirement for vitamin B-12. It has many functions, including formation of red blood cells and maintenance of a healthy nervous system. Tryptophan: One serving of shrimp provides 100 percent of the recommended daily intake of this essential
amino acid. Tryptophan plays a role in appetite control and sleep, and improves mood. This Shrimp Scampi with Tomatoes and Spinach is a “Diva-style” version of the traditional dish. It’s a one-pan meal that can be prepared in less than 30 minutes. SHRIMP SCAMPI WITH TOMATOES AND SPINACH Frozen shrimp is the perfect “go to” item for a quick and nutritious meal and works well in this recipe. 1 1/2 pounds jumbo shrimp, fresh or frozen and thawed, shelled and de-veined 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 teaspoons minced garlic 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes with juice

Then start moving your hand outward toward the rim. You will see a swirl of
