THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2010 their new adventures. Now lined up in a neat row in our bookcase with a bit of space left for a new 2010 edition, six bulging scrapbooks have become family holiday reference books that we find ourselves reading over and over. *** Donna Erickson’s awardwinning series “Donna’s Day”
ShowcaseGreetingCards in a Holiday Scrapbook Now that the first white advent candle is lit on our fresh pine wreath, strings of shimmering mini lights frame our kitchen window, and a flurry of Christmas cards outnumbers the junk mail in our mailbox, I can genuinely sing, “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas ...” Those holiday cards in multicolored envelopes arrive from a hodgepodge of senders, from new business associates to old friends and relatives living in far-flung places. Receiving personalized pieces of mail feels like an old-fashioned gesture in this digital age, and that is why I appreciate them more and more. While sending holiday greetings via e-mail is “green,” and certainly a thrifty approach, there is something about a handmade card or handwritten greeting that pleases, as if it were a special holiday gem chosen especially for me. Over the years, the kids and I either taped our Christmas cards to doorways or tossed them in a big bowl on the dining-room table as they arrived. But frankly, they didn’t get the attention“gems”deserve. Then I tried something new that has proven to be a household hit. I started a simple holiday card scrapbook tradition. I bought an inexpensive standard-style scrapbook with
big, plain pages at a discount store, tied a 20-inch length of ribbon to the top of the spiral binding, and attached a roll of double-sided tape to the opposite end of the ribbon so it would always be handy, dangling along the side. As cards arrived, I simply slapped a strip of tape on the backside of the card and immediately stuck it onto a page in the scrapbook.
Tiny cards, big cards, photo cards and postcards -- every kind of card landed in the book in minutes. I glued our family Christmas photo card on the cover, and attached a large envelope for storing “annual holiday letters” on the inside of the back cover. I set aside the first two pages for invitations to
Christmas parties, open houses in the neighborhood and ticket stubs from concerts and plays. During the holidays, I leave our in-process “coffee table book” out for all ages to thumb through at their leisure. They don’t miss a page. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter as we talk about memories of old friends or share details of

The company, under the direction of its founder, John Frank, produced vases, bowls and decorative figurals, all marked with the likeness of pacing leopard and the “Frankoma” mark. The entire operation was destroyed in 1938, and it is the early pieces from the pre-fire years that have collectors scrambling. The plant was rebuilt, and its later production is fairly common. Just win baby
It pains me to say this, but I think those people entrusted with running the Saskatchewan Roughriders might be getting a bit full of themselves. As you likely have already heard, Ken Miller announced last week that he was stepping down as head coach of the Riders. He will stay on as vice-president of football operations, which is good news for fans of the club. Naturally, since he made his announcement, there has been all kinds of speculation about who should replace the classy Miller. In a weekend interview, general manager Brendon Taman said whoever the team decides to hire must understand the culture and Saskatchewan market. For whatever reason that particular comment stuck out like the proverbial sore thumb. They must understand the culture. Just curious Mr. Taman, but what exactly is this culture you speak of? We all know the Riders are more than just a football team in this province. They are a major part of our day-to-day lives and have become an obsession for many. So ya, if that is the culture he is speaking of, sure, whomever they decide to hire must understand that being head coach of the Riders is unlike any other job in the CFL. Not only will they be subjected to the most intense scrutiny of their coaching career, they are also expected to be an ambassador for the franchise. Outside of the quarterback position, they are the face of the franchise. But if you are to look at the on-field culture of the club, it really isn’t pretty. Sure the team has become a perennial contender over the past few years but, let’s face it, the culture of the Riders on an historical level is losing. That type of comment may constitute heresy to some, but the facts are the facts. The Riders are 3-15 in Grey Cups all-time. Those three Grey Cup wins are the fewest of any active team. Throughout much of the ‘80s and a good chunk of the ‘90s, the team was so bad it almost folded. How many Save the Riders telethons were there after all? This franchise has seen plenty of highs but let’s be completely on the level here, there have been far more lows. Is
A Possible Silver Lining to 2010 Struggles
that the culture they must understand? The point I am trying to make in this rather roundabout fashion, is as much as everyone wants to make the Riders seem way bigger than they are, at the end of the day, they are a football team. It isn’t as though we’re breaking in a new pope here. Although the Riders need someone who fully understands what they are getting into, instead of focusing on culture, Taman and others need to focus on finding a winner, not a cultural expert. This is a good team and if all the pieces fall into place, there is no reason to think the Riders won’t challenge for another spot in the Grey Cup in 2011. But they need a coach that will get them to that next level, not one who will embrace the status quo which is exactly what I fear might happen if they go with either Doug Berry or Richie Hall who seem to be the top candidates if you believe all the so-called CFL insiders. Hall is a great co-ordinator but his time as head coach with the Edmonton Eskimos was an unqualified disaster. In fairness, much of the troubles in Edmonton were beyond his control but there’s not getting around the fact his time with the Green and Gold wasn’t pretty. Some guys are good assistants and some are good head coaches and it’s quite clear Richie is a good assistant. In the case of Berry, it’s tough to pinpoint what exactly he’s good at, if anything. He sure wasn’t much of an offensive co-ordinator. This was by far the most inconsistent the Rider offence has been in years and his play calling is a good reason for that. He wasn’t exactly screaming hell as a head coach either. Yes, he did get the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to the Grey Cup, but he was as unpopular a coach as they’ve had in the Manitoba capital in years if you ask fans there. And outside of that one season, his resume wasn’t exactly a sparkling one. Do we really want one of those two guys here just because they understand this culture Taman speaks of. How about a winner? How about Dave Dickenson or even Scott Milanovich, the offensive co-ordinator who designed the Montreal attack that beat the Riders in two consecutive Grey Cups. Dickenson was a winner for much of his CFL career and although he doesn’t have a ton of coaching experience he was regarded as one of the smartest quarterbacks in league history. He is clearly a head coach in waiting. Do the Riders want to pass over him because he might not understand the culture? Milanovich was an average quarterback, but he also comes from a winning background, having been with Montreal since 2007. Like Dickenson, he is considered a star coach in the making. No, they don’t have any ties to the Riders. But who cares? What they do have is a tie to winning and that is the kind of thing the Riders culture really needs.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2010 and the top part is swollen on the side of the nail. I think some pus is forming. What can I soak it in? I cannot go to a doctor. -- B.P. ANSWER: You describe a paronychia (PAIRuh-NICK-ee-uh), an infection of the skin and tissues bordering a fingernail. If the skin and tissues show only mild swelling, then frequent daily soaks in hot water can bring it to a head and cause it to drain. If it is quite swollen and painful, you’ll have to see a doctor. Asthma Usually Controllable DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 50-year-old female, and I have asthma that seems to be getting worse. In October, I got the H1N1 flu and had to go to the hospital twice because of breathing problems. I get scared every time I have a simple cold. I was told that my asthma is allergyinduced, and I have been on a daily inhaler ever since. I saw an allergist, who tested me and wanted to put me on allergy shots. He said they may or may not work, but they don’t cure asthma. Then what’s the point? Does oxygen help? Are there natural ways to prevent asthma? -- M.M. ANSWER: Asthma is a chronic condition. Looking for a cure is not realistic in many cases. Looking for control is realistic. It’s an inflammation of the airways -- the bronchi, the tubes that bring fresh air into the lungs and remove carbon dioxide from the lungs. The inflammation makes the airways very sensitive. They constrict on slight provocation and obstruct the flow of air. Furthermore, they pour out thick mucus, which adds to airflow obstruction. Respiratory viruses do trigger attacks, and that’s why the flu virus was such a problem for you. You should be sure to get the yearly flu vaccine. Allergies can be another trigger for attacks. Allergy shots are not guaranteed to stop them, but they can lessen their intensity and frequency. You might want to reconsider your position. Remove airborne irritants from your home and bedroom by getting rid of feather pillows, shag rugs and dust mites. If you have a pet, and you notice that exposure to it brings on an attack, then you have to limit where the pet is allowed in the home. An air-conditioned home keeps outdoor allergens out of your environment. For an acute attack, you need a medicine that acts quickly to dilate airways. Albuterol (Proventil) is such a medicine. If your

CITY OF ESTEVAN SNOW REMOVAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the goal of the snow removal policy? The goal of the snow removal policy is to provide a timely, adequate and cost effective level of service so that streets are passable and vehicles can move in the City. Once the initial clean-up is completed standard procedure of Public Works is to continue to widen and grade streets. A copy of the full policy is available at www. estevan.ca When does the City start to clean up after a snow storm? Public Works monitors the streets and the major response to a snow storm does not generally start until it has stopped snowing. It is dangerous due to reduced visibility and ineffective to clear Priority 1 areas more than once if the streets are passable. Streets are monitored and intersections will be sanded or trouble areas cleared if necessary. Who do we call to report icy streets, blocked intersection or other snow related issues? Please call 634-1800 during regular hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. After hours, please call the after-hours emergency number at 634- 3770. The after hour calls are directed to an answering service who will forward calls to the appropriate persons. As well, Estevan Police Services monitor the streets after hours and will request that the intersections be sanded or trouble areas be cleared. How does the City determine what streets get cleaned first? The City classifies the streets into 3 priorities: Priority 1 – Arterial Streets Streets with high volumes of traffic and main routes through and around the City such as 4th Street – average daily traffic volume of more than 8,000. Priority 2 – Collector Roads Streets with somewhat lesser volumes of traffic and designed to route traffic from local streets to the Arterial Streets such as Nicholson Road – average daily traffic of between 1,000 and 8,000. Priority 3 – Local Streets Streets that generally only serve the people that live in that area with low volumes of traffic and mostly residential – less than 1,000 average daily traffic volume. Within Priority Three there are some streets that are extremely narrow and have to be windrowed and transported away in the same day such as Grundeen Crescent.
Will the City complete some areas more than once in a major snowfall before all streets are completed? Yes, if the Priority 1 and 2 become impassable those streets would be cleared of snow again to ensure that traffic can move. Can home owners blow snow from their sidewalks, driveways and parking lots into streets? No, property owners cannot as it makes it more difficult for the city to complete a proper cleanup; it causes the streets to be rougher than necessary, causes a hazard to motorists and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. The only place this is permitted is the downtown business district as they have nowhere else to shovel the snow to. Should we keep our sidewalks clear of snow? Yes, the Traffic Bylaw requires it as it makes it safer for pedestrians and those people that have to walk on the streets for work purposes such as letter carriers and meter readers. Also please make sure that extension cords crossing sidewalks to vehicles do not create trip hazards. Can we pile snow from the sidewalks on the streets? No, the only place this is allowed is the downtown business district as these buildings do not have any other area to move the snow to. Can home and business owners pile snow on their own private properties adjacent to alleys and streets? Yes, however make sure that the piles are not so high as to create a blind corner limiting visibility for pedestrians and motorist Can home and business owners pile snow on existing windrows? No, this creates visibility and driving hazards, makes it more difficult and time consuming to remove the windrows and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. Can snow be piled in city alleys and streets? No this eliminates access for garbage collection, fire protection and other emergency services and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. However it is permitted in cul-de-sacs as long as the snow is piled in the centre of the cul-de-sac only as other piles of snow impact neighbors and makes snow removal more difficult. Can I park my spare vehicle or Motor Home on the Street? Yes, however vehicles are not permitted to be parked
NOTIFICATION ON BY-LAW 96-1498
This is a notification on implementation of Section 6.9 of above bylaw that test results are required to be submitted for all back flow prevention devices installed on City’s water system. Effective March 1, 2011 water meters will not be issued if initial manufacturer test results are not submitted. Also, all back flow prevention and cross connection control devices must be tested annually thereafter. Please contact City Hall for information on the by-law.
on any streets in excess of 24 hours and cause a lot of problems for snow removal and traffic. Can I park on the streets for less than 24 hours? Yes, however in the event of a major snowstorm we ask that all vehicles be parked in driveways or other areas where possible. In the event of a Major snowstorm the City plans to have all areas windrowed where required as soon as possible, providing equipment is operational. Please do not park your vehicles on the streets if possible as the vehicles access for snow removal equipment and have greater potential of being damaged by other vehicles and equipment. When are City snow dump areas used? The City Snow dump sites are operational from 6am – 10pm, city equipment does not operate at these locations outside of these hours. The City also asks that:
• Children are kept away from snow dump sites and piles. These are dangerous areas when equipment is working, as well as voids in the piles may collapse trapping children. • Please keep clear of snow clearing equipment and crews. If possible choose an alternate route to avoid delays. • Please keep back 20m of Sanding equipment, as they will be discharging sand at intersections of streets, lanes, and high traffic zones. • Please keep all emergency exits buildings clear of snow and ice. Your cooperation and patience is greatly appreciated. BYLAW ENFORCEMENT WILL BE ISSUING TICKETS FOR INFRACTIONS.
