RM lends $3,000 to theatre program Deputy Reeve Lorne Jahn presided at the Rural Municipality of Estevan council meeting on Monday. With the annual bylaw for exempting non-profit groups from the coming tax year on the agenda, council passed a motion that led to tax exemptions for Metochos Ministries Bible Camp, Hitchcock Community Recreation Centre, and the Estevan Auto Racing Association. Tax exemptions continued, as council passed a bylaw granting three-year exemptions to new commercial buildings constructed in the RM during 2010. As part of the RM’s development incentives for new commercial buildings in the municipality, they offer three tax-free years to all such buildings. Council approved sponsorship of two different programs dealing with the arts this year. In sponsoring the Souris Valley Theatre 2011 production, the RM will provide $3,000. Another $200 will be given to the Souris Valley Museum.

Council approved a renovation to the RM office which would add a new office for the administration building. The renovation will free up an existing office, which will now be used as a storage and meeting room. RM councillors approved a building permit for offices to be added to one of Turnbull Excavating’s buildings. A new oil well licence and haul agreement was given the vote of confidence by council at the meeting.

One piano, four hands coming to Estevan A pair of stars are coming to Estevan this weekend for a performance not often seen in the area. The piano duo of Alessio Bax and Lucille Chung have performed all over the globe with such renowned institutions as the London Philharmonic and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. As part of the Stars for Saskatchewan series, sponsored by the Estevan Arts Council, Bax and Chung are making a stop here on Feb. 20, while they tour around the province this month. Their performances of one piano and four hands have given them the acclaim as one of Canada’s most dynamic and brilliant young duos of their generation, according to Prairie Debut, the group supported by the Canada Council for the Arts dedicated to bringing high-calibre performers to the Prairies. “As well as being very polished performers,

A: Your ashtray is worth about $60, according to Warman’s “Red Wing Pottery: Identification and Price Guide” by Mark F. Moran (Krause, $24.99). *** Q: I have approximately 80 Hit Parade and Song Hits magazines from the 1950s. Do they have any value? Some of the issues are coming apart.
they are so personable,” Marguerite Gallaway said of the couple who met at a competition in 1997 and later married in 2004. Gallaway is the chairwoman of the Stars for Saskatchewan committee, which has five other members. She saw the pair perform for 20 minutes at the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Council’s showcase last year and was very impressed with the quality of the performance. Gallaway said she looks to bring in acts to the area that are a little different than what people will usually see in Estevan. She wants something that isn’t covered by the theatre, so she isn’t overlapping that kind of entertainment and is always keeping things fresh. “I look to find something new. I think rural Saskatchewan should see the kinds of things they get in Regina and Saskatoon.” She noted that many
people in Regina take performances like this for granted and that she wants to “even it out a bit,” bringing top of the line performances to smaller centres like Estevan. Gallaway showers
What should I do to repair them? -- Peter, Southbury, Conn. A: The value of your magazines depends on who is on the cover. If it is Elvis Presley, maybe $35. If it is the Cordettes, maybe as little as $5. Typical values include a 1959 issue with Fabian on the cover, $15; Paul Anka from 1962, $2.75; and Bing Crosby, also from the 1960s, $10. Since collectors prefer items in their original condition, do not make any repairs, but store them carefully and out of bright sunlight. *** Q: I have a set of 24 volumes of the works of William Shakespeare published by Knickerbocker Leather & Novelty
Company of New York. Could you inform me if they have some value, or where I could look for other information about them? -- J.P., Barre, Vt. A: Your set was published in about 1920. I went to www.abe.com, where I found dozens of individual volumes from this set being offered for sale by dealers throughout the country. “Twelfth Night,” for example, is available from an Ohio dealer for $8.50. Your complete set might be worth about $250, depending on condition and the demand for Shakespeare in your region. *** Q: While clearing my mother’s house, I found a mint copy of the Duncan Hines Dessert Book from the 1950s. Is it worth keeping? -Susan, Carbondale, Ill. A: According to the Antique Trader Collectible Cookbooks Price Guide by Patricia Edwards and Peter Peck-
Alessio Bax and Lucille Chung praise on the duo after her brief glimpse of their talent. “They are so brilliant. Even if classical music (isn’t what you like), it is easy to be impressed with ham (Krause, $21.99), your Duncan Hines cookbook is worth in the $11 to $19 range. them.” Because they are playing duets on the same grand piano, the issue of size is very much a consideration everywhere they go. “She’s a mini thing and he’s quite tall, so there will be two adjustable benches,” to accommodate the disparate pair. The performance is presented with the assistance of the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils. Stars for Saskatchewan brings in people from all over. Gallaway said people from all over southeastern Saskatchewan will come to Estevan to see some of the shows that are put on, some even from south of the border in North Dakota. The added attractions bring in more tourism to the city. Other acts coming to Estevan through Stars for Saskatchewan are a Celtic group from the Maritimes and a gospel choir. Galla-
way said the committee is already into the planning stages for next year’s attractions, continuing the process of lining up highcalibre acts for 2012. The organization of the event can be a little daunting for the group. Gallaway said everyone has a job. Someone is responsible for the postperformance reception, introduction preparations and someone must be in charge of supplying the performers with any food or drinks they need before the performance. Gallaway said all the little “blips” that come along must be handled as well. It all comes together in the end, eventually. “It does take a lot of time to get it all together.” Tickets to Bax and Chung are available at Henders Drugs or can be purchased at the door before Sunday’s performance at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church.

Perspective Expressed Opinions Jordan Baker Estevan Mercury Reporter
When hockey fights go too far I love hockey. I grew up playing the sport. I’ve watched it at pretty much every level and I’ve coached it. It’s a sport that I get. One of the guys I coached with had coached the sport for more than 30 years. He would say there are four games going over the course of one game. What the players see, what the coaches see, what the referees see and what the spectators see. The only point of view I am void of personal experience in is refereeing, but I have siblings and friends with whom I’ve spoken a lot on the subject. When it comes to violence in Canada’s game, I have an opinion of compromise. After a slew of incidents in the last couple of weeks involving line brawls and goalie fights, the state of hockey is very much in the limelight. Mario Lemieux, a hockey icon and co-owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins, came down hard on the NHL’s lack of discipline in response to a series of brawls and misdeeds in a game between his own Penguins and the New York Islanders. I’ve looked through comments that follow stories about the brawls and Lemieux’s criticism of the players’ and league’s actions. Many quickly jump to the support of the wild west style hockey the NHL is sometimes known for and criticize Lemieux for speaking out against fighting. But he didn’t say he had a problem with fighting in the NHL, and that’s not what any of this is about. Those comments really miss what the criticism is. I have no prob-

lem with fighting in the NHL. Fighting and hockey have always had a neighbourly relationship. However, watching line brawls and shift after shift of players going after other players is disgusting. I don’t want to get rid of all violence in the NHL, but at some point it gets ridiculous and a few games recently have reached that point. There are the old time hockey guys who shout, mostly to be heard over their loud shirts, about how cracking down on headshots will eliminate the physical and entertaining value of the game. The same characters believe in no restrictions or enforcement to fighting. A crackdown on headshots to protect the players is a good start. Fighting doesn’t need to be banned, it’s already penalized. The league should however, consider what the course of action is when a second fight breaks out while one is in progress, as well as how it deals with line brawls. One fight at a time is OK by me, it’s even a crowd-pleaser. Let’s not get carried away, though. When multiple fights break out, or players continue to attack players later in a game, the sport looks like a joke. Restrictions on the number of fights for players and teams should absolutely come into effect. I am not one to decide on what the per game fight quota should be, but there clearly needs to be one, with heavy fines and suspensions. Any move the NHL makes to deter what happened in the Pens and Isles game would be a step in the right direction, but it needs to be meaningful. Lemieux’s criticism was that the action taken wasn’t meaningful, he wasn’t making a call for no fighting. I love hockey, I know hockey, but the incidents in the last couple of weeks were an embarrassment.

MLS to add teams in Vancouver, Montreal PROVINCIAL REGINA — Saskatchewan excelled in target shooting Monday at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax. Cassandra WilsonAnderson of Naicam and Aerial Arthur of Saskatoon combined to win gold in the women’s team air rifle event. Mack Kohl of Montmartre and Clayton Schlosser of Lloydminster were the silver medallists in men’s team air rifle. NATIONAL SAN JOSE, Calif. The league expects to have 22 teams by the end of the decade. *** WHITEHORSE - Stories of life-threatening conditions, heroic rescues and heartbreaking losses are unfolding during this year’s 1,600 kilometre Yukon Quest dog sled race. Second-place musher Hans Gatt of Whitehorse, Yukon, was exhausted, dehydrated and desperate when he was rescued this weekend by another racer on a blizzard-swept summit of the 1,600 kilometre route between Whitehorse and Fairbanks, Alaska. Brent Sass hooked Gatt’s struggling team to his sled and, powered by Sass’ lead dog Silver,

But just hours later, Sass was hit by a separate disaster when one of his own dogs suddenly died on the trail, although a veterinarian could find no obvious cause of death. INTERNATIONAL WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Southern hemisphere rugby officials are banking on the revamp of the Super 15 competition to revive the sport’s appeal to fans and broadcasters in difficult economic times and in an increasingly cutthroat sports marketplace. New protocol to ensure quality foster care PROVINCIAL REGINA - Workers who deal with kids in care in Saskatchewan are being told to talk to each other more after the death of a threeyear-old boy at a foster home. The Ministry of Social Services said Wednesday there’s a new protocol to ensure that child protection workers and foster home workers review quality of care concerns at foster homes together. “People were not talking before,” said Social Services Minister June Draude. “They were not communicating the fact that there was an issue between the home and the actual child. We (are) now saying, ‘Sit down on a regular basis and tell me what the issue is here.’” The communications protocol was implemented in the Regina office of the Ministry of Social Services after the little boy, who lived at a foster home in the nearby community of Pense, died of pneumonia in December 2009. *** DAVIDSON, Sask. RCMP have laid murder charges in the case of a missing Saskatchewan man whose body they haven’t found yet. Sgt. Paul Dawson said Saturday that forensic investigators have a search warrant for a rural property in Davidson, northwest of Regina, and he says they are optimistic they will find 25-year-old Rob Vicente’s body there. “Our goal from the outset was to locate Rob to bring some sense of closure to his family, and we are optimistic that we will locate him so Rob’s family can have a proper burial for their loved one,” Dawson said. Vicente was last seen
leaving his mother’s house near Davidson on Oct. 10 — his burned-out car was found two days later in an abandoned farm field. *** BELLE PLAINE, Sask. - RCMP in Saskatchewan say the ice is so bad on the Trans-Canada Highway, it’s starting to look like a ‘70s TV show out there. There was a chain reaction accident on Friday morning when a van lost control and hit the ditch near Belle Plaine. While a tow truck was working on pulling it out, another car came roaring up from down the road. RCMP Sergeant Rob Cozine says it did what he calls, in his words, “a Dukes of Hazzard.” He says it went up the tow truck’s ramp and flew into the air, landing on its roof in the middle of the highway. Moments later, yet another car hit the ditch. NATIONAL MONTREAL - Lauza Legere’s heart is beating strong this Valentine’s Day but not because she’s been poked with Cupid’s arrow. She’s helping test the C-Pulse HeartAssist System, a new device that rhythmically squeezes her aorta and pumps blood to her damaged heart. “I feel much better than before,” Legere said in a telephone interview, explaining that before she got the pump it was hard to even take a breath. *** OTTAWA - The Canadian military is revising the way it handles domestic operations, after realizing there are gaping holes in the existing strategy. Newly released documents show the 2010 Winter Olympics were an organiza-
tional nightmare because the military lacked what they call domestic doctrine. Doctrine provides rules to handle different types of operations, but the section governing home turf activities is out of date. *** HALIFAX - The leaders of Nova Scotia’s three main parties say public trust in the province’s politics has been more deeply shaken after the RCMP laid 52 charges on Monday against one current and three former members of the legislature. The charges, resulting from a criminal investigation of members’ constituency expenses, include fraud, theft and breach of trust. Premier Darrell Dexter said the charges will make it more difficult to get people to participate in politics.

INTERNATIONAL CHICAGO - Energy drinks are under-studied, overused and can be dangerous for children and teens, warns a report by doctors who say kids shouldn’t use the popular products. The potential harms, caused mostly by too much caffeine or similar ingredients, include heart palpitations, seizures, strokes and even sudden death, the authors write in the medical journal Pediatrics. Ecuadorean judge ruled Monday that Chevron Corp. was responsible for oil contamination in a wide swath of Ecuador’s northern jungle. The plaintiffs’ attorney says the company was fined $8 billion. Chevron confirmed the ruling but not the amount of the fine. The company said in
a news release that it would appeal, and called the judge’s decision “illegitimate and unenforceable.” The high-profile case, fraught with intrigue, corporate espionage and geopolitics, had been winding its way through U.S. and Ecuadorean courts for 17 years.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2011 the foot drop is going to be your diagnosis. Nerve damage, back problems, stroke, diabetes and muscle illnesses are some of the causes of foot drop, and they are the actual diagnosis. Many times, the problem is nerve malfunction. Quite often, health cannot be restored to the nerve, but things can be done. One of those things is a lightweight brace that keeps the foot from flopping downward when you take a step.
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: A friend in his late 40s thought he had the flu and called his doctor for medicine. Later he had trouble breathing and went to the emergency room, where they said he was having a heart attack. Several hours later, he passed away. An autopsy showed that a virus had attacked his heart. I know there are many types of viruses, but what kind did he have? How does a person get this kind of virus? If it had been found in time, could something have been done to stop it? -- R.R. A N S W E R : Yo u r friend had myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart. Viruses are one cause of it. The virus most often involved is the Coxsackie virus, named after the New York town where it was first identified. Myocarditis can be so mild that it produces no symptoms. Or it can be so overwhelming that it is fatal. It occurs at any age. Often, a respiratory infection (even a common cold) or a gastrointestinal disorder (stomach flu) might precede it. A young person -- and your friend is considered young -- struggling to breathe puts the doctor on alert to suspect that a failing heart is responsible and that a viral infection of the heart could be the cause. Coxsackie viruses are transmitted from one person to the next through respiratory droplets or from foods, hands or utensils contaminated with the virus. We have no medicine that kills this virus. Most of the time, none is needed, since nearly all Coxsackie infections are minor troubles. In cases like your friend’s, medicines to keep the heart beating forcefully usually can tide a person over the dangerous period of heart failure. Your friend’s story is tragic. The booklet on congestive heart failure describes the more common kinds of it, not the kind due to viral infections. Read-
ers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -No. 103W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the reader’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 90 years old. About three years ago I developed foot drop. A neurologist diagnosed the condition. My general health is good, considering my age. This foot drop has become debilitating. Is there anything I can do to take care of it? --M.S.
*** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

ANSWER: Foot drop isn’t really a diagnosis. It’s an observation of what’s happened to your foot. You cannot raise the front part of your foot off the ground when you take a step. The drooping foot makes it hard to walk. You have to lift the leg very high so the foot clears the ground. Finding out what made

Sacred Heart School’s French immersion students took part in Concours D’Art Oratoire, French Speech Arts, last week. The event pitted 20 students from Grade 6, 7 and 8 to compete for the opportunity to challenge for the provincial title in Saskatoon. The panel of judges was made up of French students from the Estevan Comprehensive School. Aurora Whitehead, a Grade 7 student, speaks before the judges.

(c) 2011 Donna Erickson Distributed by King Features Synd. ancient India, Indonesia and other parts of Asia as early as 2600 B.C., but it is only recently that their unique healing aspects have been fully realized. Bharat B. Aggarwal, who earned his doctorate in biochemistry from the University of California at Berkeley, builds a convincing case that many spices are super-rich sources of unique phytonutrients -- plant compounds that fight oxidation and inflammations, the two processes underlying most chronic diseases. As Aggarwal points out, studies worldwide have linked spices to the prevention and treatment of more than 150 health problems, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer and even Alzheimer’s. The medicinal and culinary history and uses of 50 of these spices --- such as aniseed, cinnamon, garlic, sage and vanilla --- are featured in this new book, along with delicious recipes that use them. For example, cinnamon can help to balance blood sugar. With the type 2 diabetic outbreak becoming more and more critical in this country, this use of cinnamon is important. Added to morning oatmeal, the combination becomes a super food. Other beneficial spices documented in this book include lemongrass (calming spice), saffron (uplifts mood), rosemary (a cancer fi ghter), oregano (infection protector), kokum (India’s exotic weight-loss wonder) and garlic (an anti-aging spice that also fi ghts cancer, colds and heart disease). This well-documented and accessible reference guide is certain to change our thinking about the family spice cabinet. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2011
Luscious Lunches Are you sick of sandwiches, chips and baby carrots? The healthy and resourceful ideas below can spice up your lunchbox, require minimal preparation time and will help you look forward to your noon meal again. Pasta Noodles Cook up a batch of noodles the night before and store them in the refrigerator, or use leftover pasta noodles, and you have the beginnings of a tasty cold salad for lunch. Fill one-half of a bowl-sized portable container with cold noodles. Add bitesized cooked meats or fish, or throw in some beans or nuts. Chop a tomato, some mushrooms, peas, black olives, onions, spinach, celery, carrots, asparagus -anything you find appealing and have on hand. Grapes, raisins, strawberries and apples can be added, too. For more flavor, add cheese, an herb blend, some light mayonnaise, olive oil and lemon juice, or your favorite dressing. Rice Rice is a healthful and filling grain. Choose brown rice to add the health benefits of whole grain to your meal. Line a tortilla, lettuce or cabbage leaf, or a sheet of nori (seaweed) with cold, cooked rice. Then add your favorite filling, such as tuna, cheese, nuts, sliced
vegetables, citrus fruits or whatever your taste buds dictate! Add a sauce if you like such as salsa, light sour cream or soy sauce. Roll up your treat and slice it into 1- to 2-inch sections for a noontime treat -- either heated or cold. Dips Everyone loves dipping foods, so make your lunch a festive dipping occasion! Pack foods that are long and thin: sliced peppers, carrots or celery; asparagus, beans or pea pods; pretzels, bread sticks or cheese strips; or apple, orange or pear slices. Peanut butter, light cream cheese, yogurt, soy sauce, salsa, tomato sauce and salad dressings make great dips and can quickly be poured into a small container for lunch on the go. If you have more time, try crafting your own dips. Canned pumpkin can be blended with light cream cheese with a little maple syrup for a sweet dip. Chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice and tahini (sesame paste) pureed together make a nice hummus base to which you can add spices for more flavor. Minced garlic, chopped basil, Parmesan cheese and olive oil make a hearty
pesto; add ground nuts for more texture. Don’t forget safety! If you’re packing your lunch to take with you, keep your foods at a safe, cold temperature. Put your water bottle in the freezer the night before, and pack the bottle close to the perishable foods in your lunch pack. That way you can enjoy ice-cold water with your lunch. My recipe for ProteinPacked Pasta Salad is a great way to use leftover pasta and vegetables. It’s also an interesting way to incorporate alternative sources of protein into your diet in the form of lentils. It’s delicious hot or cold and makes lunch a luscious affair! PROTEINPACKED PASTA SALAD

THE TAX ON ALL HOME THEATRE BUNDLES!
By Samantha Mazzotta Safety From Gas Leaks DEAR HAMMER: I wanted to relate a story that your readers might find helpful. Last month, in the middle of the night, I woke up to the very strong smell of gas throughout my house. I immediately got everyone up and told them to get out of the house. All the burner controls on my kitchen stove appeared to be in the off position. I didn’t try to turn off the gas at the meter because it is located in my basement and the gas odor was so strong I was worried about an explosion. Instead, my family and I went to the neighbor’s house across the street, woke them up and called the fire department from there. They got
there quickly and shut off the gas supply. The culprit was a faulty joint in a gas supply pipe just past the meter, which was quickly repaired the next day by a specialist who also checked out the entire system. Please tell your readers to have an emergency plan ready in case they have to quickly evacuate the house, and make sure your kids, even the youngest ones, know it. I’m really proud of my wife and kids, who got up with hardly any questions and got out of the house with just their pajamas and slippers on during a cold night. But I’m still going over the incident in my head to think of ways to get out safely, or even better, to prevent this situation from happening again. Hopefully my experience can help others. -- James G., Amherst, Mass. DEAR JAMES: Thanks so much for relating your experience! I’m glad everyone was OK. This is a way of sounding a wake-up call to
readers who haven’t thought much lately about home safety. An evacuation plan is a must, as is regularly checking carbon monoxide and smoke detectors to make sure they’re working properly, keeping fire extinguishers within easy reach near areas of open flame (like the stove or fireplace) and educating your kids about safety in and around the home. HOME TIP: Know the location of your home’s gas meter, the main water-shutoff valve and the electrical circuit box so they can be quickly accessed by you or emergency personnel. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. When in doubt as to whether you can safely or effectively complete a project, consult a professional contractor. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.
