One-on-one with Jordan Baker Sheila Kasick is a local artist and member of the Solar Studio Art Gallery at the Estevan Shoppers Mall. She is also a homemaker, mother of four, and school bus driver. How long have you been taking art in a serious way? I didn’t really seriously think about it until about 2000, I would say. I was always interested but growing up it was never really an option other than something just to play around with or art class. Or a class where you had to be more creative, I just excelled at. But about 2000 I started taking it a little more serious. And why was that? It’s family influence actually. They were all fooling around, painting. Some of my aunts are very artistic, and I enjoyed watching them, so I tried it. (Back) then it would be a giftforsomebody, etcetera.ButI didn’t actually get really serious until we opened up Solar, which was very nice. Wereyouoneofthefounding members of Solar? Yes, yes I am. We just started actually as a Christmas store. There was a guild in town, the (Visions) Art Guild, and some of the members had joined that in the fall. And then we decided for Christmas there was a space downtown that a friend of one of the members owned, who said we could be in there. And we were just going to be open for two weeks at Christmas, and then we spread it out a little longer and a little longer and then we decided to open it up for good. Howmanyofyoudecided to start this?
There were probably about nine or 10 of us at the time. But we had no idea what we were doing. We’re past the stumblingbutlearningaswego. What sort of availability was there for artists before this? I wouldn’t say there was much. That’s why we started up. There was the artists’ guild which was nice, but other than that there was nothing. You just had to stumble you’re way in somehow and hope you’d get interest. They’d put on shows at the art gallery, but not many people hear about that. That’s why we opened up for Christmas: to get awareness. And then after that it was almost for ourselves more than even to show to anybody else. It was just a place that we could talk to other artists, and display our work, and get involved in artwork instead of just stuff we do in our own time. We can take ourselves more seriously as artists because of it. I wouldn’t have considered myself an artist before. I was a person that enjoyed to make art, but now I consider myself an artist. And it’s because I have a venue, an outlet and the support group of Solar. It’s really a great group of people. What are some of the issues for local artists in a community the size of Estevan? Sometimes art isn’t taken seriously. People will go and spend astounding amounts of money on other things but they don’t think that art should be (the asking price) a lot of times. Or they’ll say, “This has been here three months, I should be able to get a bargain for it now.” Canadians have this idea that if it’s made in Canada it’s, sort of sub par. Is that something you’ve experienced? At the start we were trying, and still are trying, to push the fact that it’s local artists. And that is actually what our cooperative is. One of our requirements is that you have to be in a certain area to be local. But (the art) is sometimes viewed as sub par.Wehavepeoplecomeinand ask for artwork by more well

But then it’s almost getting turned differently; some businessesnowwillcometobuy primarily from there because we’re local. They look at it as goodtosupportthelocalpeople. Are people a little more intrigued by local art when they do come in and see it? They are. Yeah, the quality and the variety. It’s amazing, we usually have a core group of 12 people, I think right now we have 10, but how different everybody is. You know, you can pick out individual artists just by how different their work is; for 10 people that all live in

Perspective Expressed Opinions Jordan Baker Estevan Mercury Reporter
Zero tolerance may be necessary Drinking and driving doesn’t seem to be decreasing at a fast enough pace. A Harris/Decima poll of about 2,000 people, charged by the Canadian Automobile Association, showed 24 per cent of Canadians admitted to driving at least once in the past 12 months while they believed they were at or above the legal limit. That’s one in four Canadians and shows only those willing to admit to it in a poll. Being from a very rural part of the country, I’ve borne witness to this activity plenty. People live outside of town, or in a neighbouring town, and after a few drinks, or several, drive home. And it’s not like Canadians are unaware of the risks. Ninety-eight per cent of those surveyed in the same poll considered drinking and driving to be unacceptable behaviour. This doesn’t make a lot of sense. If everybody thinks it’s wrong, the
Page 4
only explanation is people just don’t care. Clearly there is not enough stigma attached to this. Maybe the penalties aren’t steep enough, though I think they are. Losing my licence for a year would really crimp my style, and that’s nothing to what my insurance would balloon up to. If a collision happened to harm someone else or worse, prison time should be enough of a deterrent. Road Safety Monitor polls conducted this fall by the Traffic Injury Research Foundation, a Canadian independent charitable road safety institute, with 1,201 Canadians, showed a different story. The Dec. 21, 2010 press release said only 5.5 per cent of respondents admitted to driving over the legal limit in the past 12 months, a drop from 8.2 per cent in 2007. But more than 24 per cent of Canadians polled admitted to driving after drinking some amount of alcohol, but still thought to be below .08, in the past 30 days. Those numbers may look a little better but many Canadians appear to be looking at this law as a suggestion. Part of the problem with those poll numbers is people can’t really tell just by sensing, whether or not they are below the legal limit. Lots of people will shrug it off, say they’re fine to drive, get home without any trouble and consider they were below .08, but they don’t know unless they’re pulled over and tested. Perhaps then, the best way to combat this problem is a zero tolerance, zero-blood-alcohol policy. It takes the guess work out of wondering if you can drive after two drinks, or five drinks in five hours. There are more variables than just how much alcohol one consumed, so it’s very difficult for anyone to make an informed decision based purely on how they feel or by counting the drinks and the hours. Maybe all cars should come equipped with an ignition interlock device. At least people would know for certain whether they can legally drive. I am comfortable with current laws, but a zero-blood-alcohol policy may mean safer roads and fewer fatalities. And though it may be a minor inconvenience for even the most responsible drivers, that must take a back seat to the potential lives saved.

www.estevanmercury.ca Farmland a critical, finite resource
We saw land skyrocket in value in the late 1970s, and the asset valuation of farms jumped. It was something that gave farmers the assets to borrow more money, which many did. Then interest rates climbed into the 20 per cent range, and land values slumped. Farmers were caught with huge payments and lower asset values. This combination led to a Western Canada was initially populated because Europeans emigrated flood of foreclosures that saw a wave of farm-gate protests by farmers as neighbours were chased off the farm by creditors. here looking for land. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Aspects call for care in preparing material for submission. Although you might find it bothersome to go over what you’ve done, the fact is, rechecking could be worth your time and effort. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The week is favorable for Bovines who welcome change. New career opportunities wait to be checked out. You might also want to get started on that home makeover you’ve been considering. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might have to be extra careful to protect that surprise you have planned, thanks to a certain snoopy someone who wants to know more about your plans than you’re willing to share. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Family ties are strong this week, although an old and still-unresolved problem might create some unpleasant moments. If so, look to straighten the situation out once and for all. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although the Lion might see it as an act of loyalty
and courage to hold on to an increasingly shaky position, it might be wiser to make changes now to prevent a possible meltdown later. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your gift for adding new people to your circle of friends works overtime this week, thanks largely to contacts you made during the holidays. A surprise awaits you at the week’s end. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t hide your talents. It’s a good time to show what you can do to
of an upcoming decision. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Dealing with someone’s disappointment can be difficult for Aquarians, who always try to avoid giving pain. But a full explanation and a show of sympathy can work wonders. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting a job-related matter past some major obstacles should be easier this week. A personal situation might take a surprising but not necessarily unwelcome turn by the week’s end. BORN THIS WEEK: You can be both a dreamer and a doer. You consider helping others to be an important part of your life.
impress people who can do a lot for you. A dispute with a family member might still need some smoothing over. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be open with your colleagues about your plan to bring a workplace matter out into the open. You’ll want their support, and they’ll want to know how you’ll pull it off. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Trying to patch up an unraveling relationship is often easier said than done. But it helps to discuss and work out any problems that arise along the way. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While your creative aspect remains high this week, you might want to call on your practical side to help work out the why and wherefore

RM of Estevan to be busy with roads and health In the middle of the budget process now, the Rural Municipality (RM) of Estevan No. 5 is expecting to have a busy year ahead. Greg Hoffort, RM of Estevan administrator, said, “It’s going to be a reasonably aggressive and ambitious year.” Infrastructure projects will continue with some road rehabilitation and road construction similar to other years, but bridge work, added Hoffort, will be prominent throughout the RM. “What is happening this year is bridge replacement,” he said. “Because bridges are so essential to our area—from residential and agriculture to oil—this will be a great benefit to the area.”
He noted working ahead of these issues early meant they were able to get federal and provincial grant money last year for those bridge projects. While the road construction projects are put to tender, the repairs to roads will be done by the RM w i t h its own equipment and personnel. Wa t e r main extensions are going to be another construction project, as well as adding water and sewer lines. Speaking on health initiatives for 2011, Hoffort

said the “desire” to achieve regional hospital status is the ultimate goal, but it’s the little things that will help get to that point. “Before (regional status) can happen, we need doctor retention. We need to do more to not only attract doctors but t o g e t them to stay long term. Doctor retention is paramount on the health committee’s agenda.” For the RM, there are also concerns for the recently acquired Creighton Lodge
seniors’ housing, which is owned jointly by five RMs. “Everything is going extremely well there,” he said, noting the building has gone from 26 of 45 suites occupied to now being at full capacity. Renovations are ongoing at Creighton Lodge but Hoffort said the fundraising has gone well and they are “moving in the right direction.” The RM and City of Estevan will be continuing to work closely on overlapping services to “improve the community and reduce duplications.” He noted joint water initiatives, where RM ratepayers are connected to the city, and joint planning between the RM and City will con-

Hoffort. “It’s going to be a busy oil year based on the number of permits,” he said with regard to the number issued to date. He said they did a lot of work last year on road-haul agreements, getting that process “ironed out” and the RM will continue on that path. “We’ve eliminated a lot of the headaches (for both the RM and oil companies) and made things a lot smoother by making those agreements prior to drilling.” Letting companies know what’s expected of them, particularly where road maintenance is concerned, has meant those processes move better once the drills are in the ground.

tinue in order “harmonize” things. He said when the RM contributes to City facilities it often means those facilities can incorporate a little more. Hoffort said they have an initiative this year to create a couple of dust-free roads off of Highway 47 around Woodlawn Park going towards Boundary Dam and Souris River. To make a more pleasant drive to some of the recreational activities at Boundary, which include a boat launch and swimming area, he said the road is getting refurbished so people “can drive on a dust-free surface, rather than a gravel road.” The oil industry is not going to slow down at all in this area, according to

Make a Date in 2011 When the four Gustafson kids step off the yellow school bus and through the side door of their home, they step right into family time. With a quick peek at the supersize wall calendar opposite the doorway, they know exactly what’s happening. The easy-to-read and funto-manipulate calendar lets everyone know at a glance the “who, what, when and where” of family life. “I highlight the current date to make it easy to visualize what’s going on today and what’s ahead,” says Angela Gustafson, a 41-year-old writer and mom of 12-, 10- and 8-yearold boys and a 6-year-old girl. “The kids like to move the magnets around and talk about the things they are excited to do. It’s like a piece of art that’s always evolving.” Keeping track of schedules can be a challenge for everyone in active families. This calendar system is a creative way to make sure no important appointment or activity gets lost in the shuffle. Here’s how to create one in your home, and keep it up to date: 1. The key to the Gustafson system is a magnetic chalkboard, available at office supply stores. Before hanging it on a wall, carefully measure and draw a basic calendar grid with 35 squares or boxes. Allow extra space across the top for writing the month and the days of the week. Leave room along the sides to store magnetic backed images. Angela used a permanent silver paint pen for
drawing the lines and writing the days of the week. 2 . C r e ate eyecatching magnetic images using 8-1/2-by-11-inch magnet sheets or businesscard magnets. Cut to size and adhere to the backside of photos, stickers and magazine cutouts. Look for images that relate to activities such as basketball, music lessons, dance or karate. Save business magnets from favorite stores, restaurants and medical offices, too. Trim them down to fit in
a square. 3. Attach a magnetic penholder to the side and fill with chalk and nontoxic wet-erase markers, such as Expo Bright Sticks Wet-Erase Fluorescent Markers. 4. At the start of each month, write the number for each day and planned activities. Add magnetic images. It’s a great opportunity to talk with young children about the number
of days in a week, in a month and even how Feb. 29 sometimes leaps into the picture!

When Medicines Fail to Quell Heartburn DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 25. I have a serious case of GERD. I’ve been put on four different medicines. They aren’t working. I also have palpitations throughout the day. I’ve been told by doctors and nurses that there is nothing dangerous about them. I’d like to know if this true. -- J.C. ANSWER: GERD -- gastroesophageal reflux disorder -- is heartburn. It’s the upward spurting of stomach acid and digestive juices into the esophagus, the swallowing tube, a place that is not able to cope with these corrosive juices the way the stomach is. Eliminate or go easy on foods that make GERD worse: citrus fruits; tomatoes; onions; carbonated drinks; spicy, fatty or fried foods; chocolate; peppermint; and caffeine. If you’re overweight, weight loss lessens GERD symptoms. Don’t lie down after eating. Don’t smoke. Sleep with your head, chest and stomach on a slope by putting 6-inch blocks under the bedposts at the head of your bed. That position keeps stomach acid in the stomach. Don’t wear anything that constricts your stomach, like tight pants or tight belts. Medicines called “proton pump inhibitors” nearly completely turn off acid production. Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, Aciphex and Dexilant are their names. If you still have heartburn while on these medicines, it’s OK to use an antacid along with them. If medicines fail, other causes of heartburn need consideration, things like bile reflux or eosinophilic esophagitis. If these conditions aren’t found, then surgical treatment of GERD is an option that’s open to you. Palpitations mean a thumping or racing heart. They can be felt as a thud in the chest. The cause is an extra beat -- or more correctly, a premature beat -- one that comes before it should. The beat after a premature beat is delayed.
During the del a y, t h e heart fills with more blood than usual, and that causes a thump in the chest w h e n the heart empties. Premature beats are almost always innocent and need no treatment. You can believe your doctors and nurses. The booklet on GERD explains this common malady and its treatment. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 501W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no
cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Can you give me insight into the HammanRich syndrome? My father passed away from it. -- L.R. ANSWER: I can tell you only a little, because only a little is known about it. It’s a lung injury that comes on suddenly, with damage to the lung air sacs (the alveoli) and the spaces between the air sacs, the interstitium. The cause is unknown. Because of such destruction, oxygen cannot get into the blood. Patients are severely short of breath, have a fever and they cough. The only medicines are ones to keep
THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JANUARY 7, 2011 Page 15 the person going as best as possible. There is no cure medicine. Even with a ventilator, death happens to more than 60 percent of these patients. It’s an illness that reminds doctors that they don’t have an answer for every malady. You and your family have my condolences. *** Live well in an Energy EfÀcient Hybrid Dr. Donohue regrets Edition Beachcomber Hot Tub that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his Out-performs “The Hot Tub column whenever possible. of Choice most spas by Readers may write him or for those looking for using up to less power Quality, Comfort, request an order form of Energy & EfÀciency” available health newsletters at P.O.
