Hospital Foundation looks to fill wish list It never ends for the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation. Constantly raising money for new hospital equipment, the foundation is setting its sights on the 2011 calendar year with a slew of new equipment purchases on the wish list. Hospitals gather all the funds for new equipment they can, said Roxy Blackmore, foundation director. “Certainly, we are in a state of need. We’re no different than anywhere else.” The hospital each year produces a wish list of necessary items it needs to continue functioning as best it can. “The wish list isn’t just things that would be nice, but what is necessary. With the economy affecting us all, and we’re not immune to that in Estevan.” Blackmore noted sometimes new items come up that immediately need to be purchased, like replacing broken equipment. When it comes to

these “unforeseen circumstances,” like a broken scope, she said, “You just can’t say, ‘no’ to that.” In 2009 the foundation bought about $300,000 worth of equipment but in 2010 equipment needs identified by department heads topped $800,000 and about $700,000 is expected in 2011. Those items include IV pumps, vital signs machine, blood pressure machine and a jaundice meter, among a lengthy list of others. Fundraising initiatives are vital to support the hospital, but Blackmore noted it’s also a good way to gain public awareness of what the foundation does for the area. Hot dog and chocolate bar sales both help to get the word out, more than bring in donations. The gala parade is a big fundraiser, bringing in $13,000 last year and another big fundraiser, the Cash Calendar lottery tickets, is on now, selling tickets until March. Blackmore said fundraising for hospitals can be

challenging. “It’s not a feel-good thing, like a rink. People don’t want to be in a hospital.” But she said it’s necessary to support hospitals because you never know when you’re going to be in one. The drive to get St. Joseph’s certified as a regional hospital is certainly in the back of the foundation’s mind. “In order to get the status we want, we need that equipment. The sooner we get that, the sooner we can have regional status.” Modern, relevant equipment attracts doctors to the area, but that’s not all Blackmore wants to do for prospective doctors. “It’s not just recruitment that’s the challenge, but retention that is the challenge as well.” That means not only making the hospital attractive but also the community. She said the foundation is here to help out new doctors in the area, who may have a big transition to the Estevan area.

Roxy Blackmore The community can help out by taking part in the fundraisers and donations can be made on the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation website www. sjhf.org. Cash Calendar lottery tickets can be bought at St. Joseph’s Hospital or by contacting Roxy Blackmore at 637-2474.

Money Problems?

Start Fresh. We Can help. Turning Over a New Leaf Most folks look at the start of a new year as the perfect time to turn over a new leaf and live a better life. Eating more greens is the perfect way to kick off the new year in a healthier way. According to an article by Heather K. Vincent, Ph.D, in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, eating more plant-based foods -- which are rich in substances called phytochemicals -- seems to prevent oxidative stress in the body, a process associated with obesity and the onset of disease. Dr. Vincent suggests starting each meal with plantbased foods such as leafy greens, fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes to make sure you get enough phytochemicals during regular meals and snacks. Kale -- whether it’s the curly, flat-leaf or dinosaur variety -- is a great choice when selecting a leafy green vegetable. The leaves freeze well and actually taste sweeter and more flavorful after being exposed to a frost. Kale

is a member of the Brassica family, which also includes collard greens, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. All of these hardy greens contain sulforaphane, a chemical believed to have potent anti-cancer properties, and phytonutrients, including powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and alkalizing effects. Kale is very high in beta carotene, vitamins K and C, lutein and zeaxanthin, and fairly rich in calcium. Kale’s tender, darkgreen leaves make a delicious salad, and the more mature leaves are a nutritious addition to a variety of dishes, especially ones containing robust meats or spicy flavors. Try this recipe for Spicy Kale Crunch when you want a nutritious snack, an unusual appetizer or as a topper for salads in place of croutons. SPICY CRUNCH

KALE

1 (16 ounce) bunch of kale (curly, dinosaur, flat leaf or a combination) 4 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon sea salt 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon chili powder or lemon pepper, 1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Place a large baking sheet into the oven while it’s preheating. Strip the leaves off the kale stems by holding the end of the stem and pulling off the leaves down to the tip. Wash the leaves in a colander under cool water. Shake the leaves to remove excess water and roll them in paper towels to dry thoroughly. (Wet leaves won’t get crisp.) Cut the leaves into 1 inch strips. 2. Put the kale strips into a bowl. Drizzle with 2 tablespoons of the olive oil and toss the leaves with your hands to coat them. Do not season with the salt or the other ingredients, as it pulls water from the leaves and keeps them from getting crisp. 3. Carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven. Pour 1 tablespoon olive oil on the pan. Spread the leaves in an even layer on the baking sheet and place it in the oven. Roast for about 7 minutes, or

until some of the leaves start to brown. Take the baking sheet out of the oven, turn the kale with tongs, return to oven for another 3 to 4 minutes. The leaves should be crisp. 4. Remove the kale from the oven and sprinkle with the remaining tablespoon of olive oil, salt, vinegar and chili powder and/or lemon pepper, as desired. Toss again and serve immediately. Makes 4 servings. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is known as The Kitchen Diva! She’s the executive producer and host of “The Kitchen Diva!” cooking show on Hulu.com. Perspective Expressed Opinions Jordan Baker Estevan Mercury Reporter

The flu shot just isn’t for me It’s flu season, and this year there is a serious case of post-pandemic complacency. At least that’s the term tossed around by health officials these days to explain the way Canadians have been shunning pricks in the arm this winter. Though 400 deaths last year were connected to H1N1, those who felt no ill effects may be feeling a little invincible now, leading to the decline in administered flu shots. I am hardly one to preach the importance of immunization against the seasonal bug, but I do think it’s important. I have been vaccinated in the past but I can’t remember the last time I received a shot; it was a number of years ago and I have since fallen ill very little. The flu has never been an inconvenience for me. I don’t think I’m a big carrier and distributor of sickness, so my conscience remains clear about whether my lack of shots has meant spreading illness to others. Not exactly a high-risk candidate for complications from influenza

Page 4

myself, it’s necessary for those who are at a high risk, like seniors or people with chronic illnesses that can exacerbate the effects of flu to more problematic levels. Influenza is serious business for those high-risk targets; between 2,000 and 8,000 deaths are attributed to it in Canada each year. I still can’t help but feel the shot is wasted on me. It appears I’m not the only thinking that this year, and though the numbers are down this year nationwide, even during a flu season like last year, less than half the population gets a shot. Shauna Hudson, medical health officer for Sun Country Regional Health Authority, however said numbers in this region are up. Last season year’s vaccination numbers are little skewed because after starting to administer the H1N1 vaccine, they stopped giving the trivalent seasonal flu vaccine. Only some 9,800 flu shots were given in 2009-10, but about 24,000 H1N1 shots were administered. Hudson noted in 2008 a little more than 11,000 shots were given, and so far this year about 12,000 have been administered and she expects that number to increase to close to 13,000 by the time they stop giving the shot on March 31. “We found this year people have been as interested and perhaps more interested” in getting the shot, she said. While all are suggested to get the vaccine, less than half the population is strongly advised to get a shot each year. It looks as though a small percentage of people who don’t fall into the high-risk areas—chronic illnesses, seniors, children, among others—actually receive a shot to the arm. I’m not entirely sure where this apathetic mindset comes from because each year health centres do all they can to make people aware of the risks and try to motivate us into taking precautions. But I’m also one of the apathetic majority so I won’t spill forth a hollow lecture to the already warned populace. The foot-dragging, at least for me, is a matter of relevancy. There has never been a noticeable difference between the years I get the shot and the years I don’t. But in the course of writing, I’ve begun to feel a little flushed.

Learn to drive introduced to FriendSpeak English literacy and literacy behind the wheel are both invaluable to those moving to Canada. A combination of this education is now readily available to recent immigrants in the Estevan area, as the local FriendSpeak group was given a Learn to Drive package last week. Kathryn Roberton, literacy co-ordinator for the Estevan Area Literacy Group, presented the booklet and interactive CD at Friend-

Speak’s weekly meeting at the Church of Christ. While the book makes use of simple language and uses fewer words per page than the SGI manual, the CD changes the way students learn their driving skills by creating a visual and interactive experience. “The CD is very easy to use. You just plug and play,” said Roberton, who noted there is no installation required. With some long distances between cities in

Saskatchewan, it is paramount that many of these immigrants have cars and valid licences in order to get around. “It’s not the most walkable (area). It can be challenging to get around if you don’t have a car.” There are only a handful of countries whose drivers licences are recognized as transferable on a permanent basis in Saskatchewan, so most people need to do testing again when they

immigrate. Mary Elford, a FriendSpeak volunteer, said they don’t get a lot of requests about drivers education but that she has helped with that in the past. “If we encounter someone who needs driving instruction, we will provide that information, or someone like myself can go through it with them,” said Elford. She went through the SGI driver’s manual with a woman from Hong Kong,

but after two years the woman still didn’t read English well enough to take the driver’s test. She was able to take the test orally, as her verbal skills were much better. The time to work through the driving manual and get a licence depends a lot on fluency, but also whether or not they have come from a driving system similar to ours. FriendSpeak has been a popular resource for those learning the language. Since starting FriendSpeak about

Vicki Elford, FriendSpeak volunteer, goes over the reading material during a session with Marena Tyeryekhov, of Ukraine.

three years ago, the group hasn’t had to do any advertising. Elford said they just let people know when the first sessions start each year and the students bring newcomers with them. Some have been attending since the beginning. “It is very rewarding to know you’ve helped them,” said Elford. Though reading sessions are generally done individually, she said sometimes two or more people will come in for tutoring and want to take the session together in a group. “We’ve found some feel more comfortable with friends,” during the sessions. She has found, however, people learn best one-onone. In group sessions students aren’t forced to speak English all the time because they can chat to one another in their native tongues. “Some just don’t learn as quickly in a group.” As literacy co-ordinator, Roberton’s chief concern is literacy. She said the manuals are good for high school students as well, who may not be interested in reading but are interested in driving. Estevan Comprehensive School was given a Learn to Drive package as well. “You need to build reading habits and maintain those habits.” A presentation by an SGI driving instructor at the library will be open to the public on Jan. 19 at 6 p.m.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Single Lambs looking for romance could find Cupid especially accommodating this week. Paired partners also find their relationships benefiting from the chubby cherub’s attention. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Keep your keen Bull’s eye focused on your target, and shake off any attempt to turn your attention elsewhere. You should get some news later in the week that might answer some questions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your early enthusiasm for a project might have been somewhat premature. Although you feel positive about it, you might need more information in order to make an informed decision. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking on a new responsibility might seem like the politically correct thing to do. But even with the promise of support, was it the wisest? Consider reassessing your upcoming decision. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Apply yourself to completing your task despite all the distractions that might be interfering with your work. Then

reward yourself with a weekend of fun shared with people who are close to you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A business agreement from the past might need to be looked at again. Use this unexpected development to check out other matters related to it. A weekend venture proves to be rewarding. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t ignore that uneasy feeling about making a commitment. It could be a case of understandably cold feet, or a warning that something isn’t as right as it should be. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A colleague could be more supporting of one of your efforts. But it’s up to you to make the case for it, and that could mean opening up a secret or two, which might be a problem for you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Expect some good news about a relative you’ve been worried about. But don’t expect the full story to be told -- at least not yet. A workplace matter might face shifting priorities.

An end-of-theweek call might hold some interesting information. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A long-overdue expression of appreciation could be offered soon. But admit it: You never really expected it would happen, right? Meanwhile, keep your weekend options open. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to dive right into a new challenge, whether it’s learning a computer program or how to drive a stick shift, or making a new friend. THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JANUARY 14, 2011

Community garden looking for leadership The City of Estevan is calling on groups or individuals to take the reins of a community garden to be set up this spring. Ly n d o n Stachoski, city clerk, said after seeing and hearing about communityrun gardens in other areas, they thought it was an initiative that could work in Estevan too. This garden will be completely run by community members. “What we’re proposing is to have people come forward with ideas, he said, and added at this point they are starting with

a “bare canvas. If we’re restricting and dictating, then it’s not really a com-

gardened by neighbouring residents, and now it is being used as a snow dumping ground. The City wants to open that up to any interested persons in the community and Stachoski noted 400 square feet of the property will continue to be used as a snow dump area, while the remaining 1,100 square feet are to be portioned off f o r t h e g a rden. How large each plot inside those 1,100 feet would be, won’t be determined until planning starts and numbers of gardeners come in. The City has enough green space to maintain, and that played a big part

munity thing. The segment of land to be used is on King Street between Chinook Bay and Hudson Road. Parts of the land have been

in the decision to pass this section of land over to the people of Estevan. Stachoski said the City is prepared to have the soil tilled and to put up fencing. They will also provide irrigation. There will likely be a “nominal fee for those gardeners who decide to take on a portion of the property. He said, however this isn’t a money-making enterprise for the City and will depend on how much fertilizer, peat moss, etc. is used. “Over the long term, I assume it will perpetuate itself. We won’t need to maintain it, he said, adding it’s a “win-win for Estevan and the com-

munity, as the City doesn’t need to maintain as much land and community gardens satisfy those who get the itch each year. A lot of people just don’t have gardens anymore, whether it’s a lack of space in the yard or no space as they live in an apartment. Stachoski envisions something like a “gardening co-op coming from this, controlled independently with its own set of priorities and rules. Though he isn’t dictating any terms for the garden, he expects there will be a set of rules that all participants will have to agree to and abide by. “Hopefully someone who not only has a green

thumb but some experience (with community gardens) will come forward, he said. He suggested running the garden may be a little too much work for one person and recommends a group of friends, or a pair of neighbours take on the role jointly. Stachoski has a template for the community garden, which is geared toward “green and organic growing, but that certainly isn’t necessary if it won’t work here. Those interested are asked to contact city hall at 634-1800 as soon as possible so ideas can come in and planning can begin in lots of time before spring.

Healthy Oatmeal Ready in Minutes Mention oatmeal to my mom, and her mind goes back to childhood summers at her grandfather’s farm in California’s San Joaquin Valley. She remembers waking up early to hot oatmeal sweetened with plump raisins from vineyard drying trays and topped with fresh, rich cream. “I suppose the cream canceled out the cholesterol-lowering properties of the oatmeal!” she recently remarked, reflecting on the memory. Cream aside, vitamin

Lasagna Toss Bolognese If only this perennial family favorite didn’t take two and a half hours to prep and bake (and that’s not counting the 15 minutes it needs, once it’s out of the oven, to settle so it’s easier to cut and serve). Our streamlined version clocks in at just 30 minutes from saucepot to pasta bowl, without losing any of the robust flavors of the original. 1 package (16-ounce) lasagna noodles 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 pound lean ground beef or meatloaf mix (ground beef, pork and veal) 1/2 cup dry red wine 1 jar (24-ounce) marinara sauce 1/3 cup whole milk 3/4 cup part-skim ricotta cheese 1/2 cup fresh basil, chopped 1/4 cup freshly grated Pecorino Romano cheese Pepper 1/3 cup shredded partskim mozzarella cheese 1. Heat large covered saucepot of water to boiling. Add lasagna noodles, and cook as label directs, increasing cooking time by 2 to 3 minutes or until al dente. 2. Meanwhile, in 12-inch skillet, heat oil on mediumhigh.Add meat and cook until no longer pink, breaking it up with spoon, about 3 minutes. (If using meatloaf mix, drain off fat before adding wine.) Add wine; cook 2 to 3 minutes or until almost evaporated. Stir in marinara; heat to boiling. Simmer on low 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in milk; simmer 5 minutes. 3. In bowl, stir ricotta with basil, Romano and 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper; set aside.

and fiber-rich oatmeal is a healthy, delicious breakfast staple that’s easy to prepare nowadays in the microwave. Think of it as fast food that’s good for you! Treat yourself and your kids to this hearty breakfast food even on busy winter mornings. Here’s a recipe and some tips to make it happen during the morning rush. First, create an easyto-use oatmeal prep center. Clear off a shelf near your microwave where you store the oatmeal and all the ingredients and utensils you need. Fill stackable pint-

size storage containers with “add-ons” such as raisins, dried cranberries, chopped almonds, walnuts, pitted dates and brown sugar. I use attractive empty jam jars and put labels on the outside to identify the contents. Keep a salt container on the shelf too, along with cinnamon or nutmeg to vary the flavor from time to time. It’s also a good idea to store a 1-quart microwavable bowl and a 1/2-cup measuring cup on the shelf so you don’t have to search for them in the morning. To quickly prepare one basic generous serving in your microwave, combine 1 cup water, 1/2 cup regular rolled oats and a dash of salt. I often add fresh fruit, such as a quarter of a chopped apple, pear or mango. Microwave on HIGH for about 3 minutes. Stir and add nuts, dried fruits, etc., according to taste. Cook another 2-3 minutes. Stir. If you don’t have a microwave, boil

Fountain Pens Q: I inherited three fountain pens from my granddad: a Sheaffer “Lifetime,” and two Parkers, a “Premiere” and a “Royal Challenger.” All three are in fairly good condition and still work. I have been offered $150 ($50 each) for them, but thought I should check with you first. -- Rob, Rio Rancho, N.M. A: Vintage fountain pens have become quite collectible. The increased interest has, of course, had an impact on values. I found all three of your pens referenced in “Collecting Pens” by Edward

Kiersh (House of Collectibles, $14.95). The Sheaffer you have was manufactured sometime during 1928-36 period and is listed for $85. The two Parkers are worth more, the Premiere, made in 1937, is valued at $385 and the Royal Challenger, also from the 1930s, $250. Your offer of $150 is obviously a bit low. *** Q: I have 50 collector plates in my basement, all in original boxes and like new. The plates include several from The Disney Collection by Grolier; Norman Rockwell, issued by the Franklin Mint; and Wonder

of Childhood by Pemberton and Oakes. I have listed them on eBay for almost a year without a buyer. -- Jim, Reamstown, Pa. A: The fact that you had no buyers on eBay says a great deal about the current market of collector plates. They are almost impossible to sell. With that in mind, it might be helpful to contact The International Collectors Guild, P.O. Box 487, Artesia, CA 90702. The group publishes a monthly newsletter for collectors of limited edition plates, and it might put you in touch with other plate enthusiasts. *** Q: I have an unopened VHS copy of the John Wayne film “The Green Berets.” I would like to know what it might be worth today. -Charles, Casper, Wyo. A: Your VHS copy of

Page 13

“The Green Berets” is worth about $5. *** Q: I have volume one of “Practical Home Treatment” by Frank Davis, copyrighted in 1903. What is it worth? -- Shirley, Ormond Beach, FL A: I found volume one of this set for $25 at www. abe.com. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox is unable to personally answer all reader questions. Do not send any materials requiring return mail.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 28-year-old daughter, who has been healthy all her life, was recently diagnosed with lupus. Will she be able to live a full life, including having children. Is there a cure? How about exercise and diet? -- R.K. ANSWER: In the 1950s, a diagnosis of lupus carried only a 50 percent chance of living for five more years. Sixty years later, the chance of living for at least 20 more years is 90 percent, and the majority of lupus patients have a normal life span. Pregnancy is definitely possible. Doctors tell their lupus patients to delay pregnancy until the illness has been inactive for six months. That kind of delay in disease activity occurs in almost all lupus patients. Lupus Is Related to Rheumatoid Arthritis

autoimmune disease, one brought on by the immune system attacking many body organs and tissues. Joints and muscles are targets. The wrists, hands, elbows, knees and ankles are the joints most often involved. Skin rashes are common. One rash is often mentioned. It’s a redness on both cheeks connected by a red bar over the bridge of the nose. This is the “butterfly” rash of lupus, seen less often than it is talked about. The kidneys, heart and nervous system can be affected. The outlook for an individual lupus patient depends on how many organs are involved and how well the patient responds to treatment. There isn’t a cure. There are many control medicines. Lupus typically has periods of worsening and periods when the illness goes into remission. Medicines make remissions longer and longer. Lupus has no special diet. Exercise is encouraged when the illness is in remission. You or your daughter can contact the Lupus Foundation of America for more information and for becoming acquainted with other patients in your town. The website is www.lupus.org,
