Southeast College offers welding for women There can be many reasons to learn a trade, whether they are personal or professional. The Southeast Regional College campus in Estevan is offering a 15hour basic welding course for women. From March 14 to 28, the course will follow a hands-on, project-oriented approach. Sheena Onrait, Estevan campus manager, said more and more women are getting interested in trades so it seemed appropriate to offer the course in a city, where she noted labour is in demand. “Women are taking

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The week continues to encourage the forming of new personal relationships and the shoring up of those that might be weakening. New contacts also dominate the workaday world. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While the bold Bovine might want to move quickly to deal with sudden plan changes, it might be best to wait until you can come up with some solid facts behind the unexpected turn of events. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It’s a good week to consider how you’ll move on matters both personal and professional. In either case, the more you know about them, the more likely it is that you’ll make the right decisions. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Although you might find more colleagues ready to support your plans, some of them could ask for changes you don’t approve of. Be ready to defend your position if necessary. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This is a good time for Leos and Leonas to think about opportunities that might be outside your usual interests. You could be surprised to find something well worth your consideration. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You can turn a troublesome workplace issue to your advantage by prompting that Virgo penchant for preciseness to take over where all else has failed. An old friend makes contact. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A friend’s unexpected work-related

be a good course to bring to Estevan. She said the college is looking to bring more personal interest courses to the local campus and this welding course is a start.

She noted a digital SLR course will be offered at the college later in the spring and a basic automotive care course may be offered as well. “The college is trying to expand its courses to cover more personal interests. We want to expand personal interest training. We do lots of computer training but we had kind of gotten away from personal interests.” T h e s e courses are run in the evening and on weekends, as most people who take them work during the day. Onrait said this course is for anyone. “Someone with an

interest in welding, or just someone looking to complete a project for their home,” would be a fit for the two and a half week course. The course teaches beginner basics and the instructor, Kevin Reiter, will guide the students through a home-related project over the five evening sessions beginning March 14. Reiter is the welding and machining teacher at Estevan Comprehensive School and has taught night classes before. “I have a whole separate curriculum for my night classes,” he said. That includes going over safety and some theory, but he added most of the class will be working on the project he has waiting for the students.

news could be a wake-up call to get you to reassess your position. See if you need to make changes to strengthen your position at this time. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might want to review a decision to work alone on a project. You might see it as efficient and prudent, but some might see it as unnecessary secretiveness, even for a Scorpio. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t be put off by a

lukewarm response to a recent effort. Perhaps you didn’t present a strong enough argument. Rebuild your case with more facts, and try again. Good luck. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A surprise development in the early part of the week could be linked to an ongoing situation. Before you decide to take further action, consider calling for a group discussion. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your sensitive side helps you work through an emotionally difficult situation with

a minimum of bruised feelings all around. A welcome change bows in by the week’s end. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) While the week still favors new pursuits, some things from the past also make a claim for your attention. The weekend is open for good times with some of the people closest to you. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a wonderful gift for seeing the best in people.

more non-traditional roles and with the labour shortage here in Estevan” this type of course may help draw some attention to that said Onrait. The course has been offered in Weyburn before, with much success, so Onrait thought it would

Those who complete the course will get to take their creation home with them and receive a certificate of participation. Reiter noted this course is for people who are looking to take welding as a hobby. “I’m not setting anybody up for an apprenticeship,” he said, but added if people have their own

welders, they would be able to do some things at home after the training. The course runs on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Those interested should apply no later than March 7 by calling 1-866-999-7372 or the Estevan campus at 634-4795. No experience required.

TRUE GRIT Hi, my name is Jack. I am a male, about 4 months old. My mom, sister and I were dumped at the parking lot at EHS last Friday evening. Thank goodness someone found us; it was really cold out there. We are nice and cozy now. I’ve had my first vaccination and have been dewormed so I am ready for a new forever home. Come and see me and my sister and all my new friends here, okay?

My name is Lady and I am a young female Border Collie. My coat is tri-colour; white, tan & black. I was found southwest of Oungre, very cold and hungry. I am not cold or hungry anymore but I am really scared. I am getting better each day, I trust my new caregivers and they are spending as much extra time with me as they can. As you can see I am camera shy, but I am really pretty.

Perspective Expressed Opinions Jordan Baker Estevan Mercury Reporter

Censorship reduces impact of art Censoring classic works has suddenly become a questionable trend. Making recent headlines was the alteration to Mark Twain’s most popular and renowned work, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Just last week Dire Straits’ song Money for Nothing was ousted from Canadian airwaves, after a couple of decades of radio play. The song must now be edited in order to pass radio standards. Both works of art used words deemed to be offensive and to be honest, yes, both words in question, on their own are offensive. What doesn’t seem to be considered is that neither work is trying to popularize or condone the offensive slang. The publishers cleverly substituted nigger in Twain’s novel to slave. Slave just doesn’t have the same coarseness to it. This

Page 4

takes away from the derogatory nature that Twain is trying to express. Again, he’s not promoting racism, he’s showing it as unpleasant and in a sense the whole purpose is to offend. That word gives the novel some teeth and it’s supposed to bite. The removal of the strong wording strips it of its power. It’s like saying Schindler’s List is anti-Semitic because it details the extermination of Jews. Edit out all the offensive violence and you would appease a handful of people who don’t like graphic depictions of genocide, but the impact of those horrible crimes is then lost. Context is everything, but in a world of political correctness, context is carelessly tossed aside. It’s much easier to hear a complaint and then strike out all the challenged words so complaints are quickly satisfied. It’s much harder to take a complaint and then look at it with a common sense hat on. Satire always experiences people who just don’t get it. Twain is often times regarded as the original political satirist who was censored in his day, and Huck Finn was banned. Twain’s day was 130 years ago. He was not trying to demean black people when using the slur in his book. It is an accurate word of the times that was used to show how disgusting the term is. In the Dire Straits song the word faggot appears, not as a term used to bash homosexuals but a word used by blue-collar workers, frustrated at the financial separation between their hardworking but poorly paid kin and rich entertainers. The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, which reviewed the complaint and the song, deemed use of the term sarcastic but not used in a sneering or derisive tone. They ordered it edited anyway. The problem is people take these words and separate them from their environment within the context of art. That, to me, is offensive.

Restore Your Financial Reputation After Bankruptcy According to research by the Federal Reserve, household debt relative to disposable income is at a record high in the United States. Should that continue, many financial analysts fear more and more households could declare bankruptcy. Those analysts’ fears might be more than worrisome, as the American Bankruptcy Institute notes that bankruptcy filings are on the rise. The decision to declare for bankruptcy is never easy, and restoring credit after filing for bankruptcy won’t be easy, either. But restoring credit after filing for bankruptcy doesn’t have to be akin to climbing Mt. Everest. It just takes some hard work, patience and due diligence to get back on the right financial track. * Pay bills the oldfashioned way. While many people prefer paying bills automatically from their checking accounts, those who have declared bankruptcy should stick to the more traditional methods of bill payment. When utilizing automatic bill pay, wherein bills are directly deducted from a checking account, men and women are risking overdrafting their accounts, which can be a black mark on individuals trying to restore their credit. Overdrafting won’t necessarily be the fault of the individual, but it’s still safer to pay via check while

Saturday June 11, 2011

attempting to restore credit. • Make saving a top priority. Declaring for bankruptcy will free up some money each month. Rather than using that money to buy things, save it instead. Opening a savings account in a large bank should eventually help people gain approval for an unsecured credit card down the road. This won’t happen overnight, as the card issuer will want to see that a person is capable of properly managing and saving money

over an extended period of time. But saving money each week is a great way to restore a credit rating that took a hit after filing for bankruptcy. • Pay every bill on time. This is obvious. Potential creditors and lending institutions want men and women, especially those who have filed for bankruptcy, to show they can pay their bills on time. A proven ability to do so illustrates financial responsibility, which men and women must be to re-

store their credit rating. • Once the dust has settled, apply for an installment loan. Once bankruptcy has been declared, individuals should take some time to restore their rating by paying bills on time and not immediately applying for a new credit card or loan. Doing so too soon after bankruptcy will likely end in rejection, which won’t look good on a credit report. Within 6 to 8 months of filing for bankruptcy, seek an installment loan, such as a used car loan. When paid on time, installment loans are very good for a credit rating, demonstrating an individual’s ability to effec-

tively manage their money month-to-month, which is exactly what prospective creditors want to see from a borrower. • Be diligent with a credit report. Men and women who have filed for bankruptcy should check their

credit reports 3 to 4 times a year to make sure there are no discrepancies. There should be post-bankruptcy records on the report and those should be positive for men and women who have managed to stay on track since their filing.

There may be certain requirements, such as paying with a particular credit card or staying on off-peak days, but the savings make such restrictions worthwhile. • Pack more efficiently. Beat Baggage Fees With These Tips The average person’s vacation is now more expensive than in years past. Airline baggage have added considerable costs to travelers’ expenses. Baggage fees and weight limits vary from airline to airline. Some can charge anywhere from $25 to $50 per bag. Generally, bags must be no more than 50 pounds. A few airlines do not charge for baggage and some may let passengers bring one bag aboard free. Shopping around among the different airlines can help save travelers money. Here are other tips to make sure a vacation doesn’t break the bank because of baggage fees. * Know the airline rules. Bags are generally limited to 50 pounds. Carry-on bags may be limited anywhere from 16 to 40 pounds, depending on the carrier. * Weigh bags before leaving. Place suitcases on a scale to ensure they do not exceed the weight limit. Remember to leave room for souvenirs; otherwise the bags may exceed the weight on the return trip. * Leave heavy items behind. Rent golf clubs, scuba gear, snorkels, skis, etc., at the destination to save on having to bring heavy items. For those

All coloured in the Scottish flavour.” Organizing the evening is an ongoing process from Jan. 2 right up to the event. Burns Nights are held around Burns’ birthday, Jan. 25, which Rooks happens to share. This year the night is held on Jan. 22. “I think us putting this on keeps the awareness there,” he said, while adding that about half the people who go through the pipe band aren’t Scottish but still have an appreciation for the poet’s work. “We just thought we should have a Robbie Burns

Night because there wasn’t one happening in Estevan, and Burns Nights happen all across the world to commemorate Burns’ life and poetry,” he said. Rooks noted from a piper’s perspective, the show is good because it’s a long winter between piping and drumming events in the fall and spring, so the show is an off-season way to keep everybody in practice. The Estevan Elks and local Royal Canadian Legion branch assist with Burns Night, which is this Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Memorial Hall. Cocktails begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the Legion at 634-3135.

In Estevan he said every aspect of the night is an attraction. It’s more than the traditional roast beef dinner with haggis. The poetry recitation and history of Burns can be enlightening and piping and dancing round out the show. “It’s the whole thing that makes it a success.” The evening follows a consistent pattern, which Rooks said is a result of being led by a cadet corps. “It’s rather a dressed up affair,” he said. “You don’t

“Part of the unique thing about the Burns Night that’s put on in Estevan is that all the major parts are done by cadets and dancers from the (Drewitz School of Dance). It’s not done by adults. I think you’d find every other Burns Night in the world is pretty much done by adults.” Part of Burns Night celebrations include readings of his poetry, often The Address to a Haggis before digging in to the traditional Scottish dish of sheep offal.
