Souris Valley steps into 21st century There is just something supremely elegant about going to the theatre. It’s one of the earliest forms of performance art. For thousands of years people have enjoyed a live performance. Perhaps there is something about the perceived spontaneity of the act, even though it’s been scrutinizingly written and endlessly rehearsed that makes the theatre such a time-tested draw. The Souris Valley Theatre is renewing these traditions and atmosphere for another summer season, beginning July 6 and going until Aug. 14. Those eager theatregoers who attend the opening night shows will be treated with a little more than what they would have seen in the past. Angela Simmons, theatre manager, said they have done dinner theatre on opening night in the past, but they will be going all out on the dinner theatre productions this year. “In the past the show was dislocated from each dinner,” she said. “This year we’re going to tie the two together so when you step into

and actors in character attend the booth and interact with people. The booth will be set up at the mall today. The theatre received a $20,000 Spectra Community Connections grant. Once the weather co-operates they will put in a cement pad outside the theatre and set up an outdoor beverage area. Simmons is hoping that will be ready in time for opening night. Both productions were written by Randy Apostle, and take place right here in Estevan. Souris Valley Sue deals with some female landowners and an evil mayor who wants their land. The resources under their land may play a role. Greased twists the gender roles around so the women are drag racers and the guys are geeks. It takes place at Rydell High in Estevan. “They’ve got a homebased feel,” said Simmons. “They’re personalized to us.” The theatre is participating in the Pepsi Refresh grant project for a chance to win a $100,000 grant. People can vote for the theatre daily by visiting www.refresheverything.ca and finding them under the arts and culture tab. Check out the theatre’s new website at www.sourisvalleytheatre.ca. Simmons said anybody who visited their previous website will immediately see all the upgrades they’ve done.

Attendees will certainly feel like they
are in the middle of an oldwest saloon. Greased will be the second production, beginning July 27, and is inspired by the classic musical, Grease. Those at the dinner theatre will find themselves in a 1950s-style diner. Gourmet burgers, fries and milk are the main course. The theatre is also modernizing this year. They are unveiling two new aspects
of the theatre today with a new website and mobile office both going live this afternoon. Simmons joked, “It’s not your grandma’s theatre anymore.” The mobile office is a 10 foot by 10 foot booth that
they can set up at different locations. “We can move in and out of the mall and set up at community events at will. It takes 10 minutes to setup.” The office is completely wireless and she said they are planning on having directors

Village on a Hunt is taking place at Churhill Park on June 5. The workshop is meant to introduce people to the activity of geocaching.
Hearing Clinics in Estevan
Join the geocaching hunt You can stay active by going on the prowl. The Village on a Hunt Day at Churchill Park in Estevan this Sunday is about a number of things; most importantly it’s about being active. Barb Wright, public health nutritionist with the Sun Country Health Region, is organizing this geocaching event on June 5 as a way to draw some attention to being an active family. Studies show that the more physically active parents are, the more active their children will be. Family activities that involve getting outside and getting exercise are vital to encouraging children’s health. Wright noted only 15 per cent of Saskatchewan’s youth was deemed active enough, referring to a 2009 report. Village on a Hunt is a geocaching workshop meant to introduce people or families to this popular activity. It is easy for the whole family to take part, it’s done outdoors and it gives all participants the opportunity to be active outside instead of watching television. Wright called geocaching a “high-tech scavenger hunt.” When geocaching, the group can check out the website: www.geocaching. com, and locate a nearby cache to track. Just type in your location—for example: Estevan—and select a cache you think will be fun or challenging. A GPS device is necessary to locate each cache, which is identified only by co-ordinates. “It’s a high-tech scavenger hunt,” said Wright. “You use GPS units to find hidden caches. You sign the log book and take one (of the treasures inside) and leave
one (of your own treasures) inside the cache.” The GPS unit typically will get you to within about 20 feet of the location, then it must be found from there. Village on a Hunt runs from 1 to 4 p.m. on June 5, and after a brief orientation about the etiquette and process of geocaching, participants will be sent to find the temporary caches that have been hidden for the day’s event. Wright asks that people bring their own GPS device if they have one; if not there will be some supplied at the park. If this is an activity that people decide they like, it’s

a great thing to do while camping, and Wright noted that most provincial parks have GPS units to rent and there are caches set up all over the country so there is almost always one close by. Geocaching is a fun sport for the family, said Wright, but the whole idea behind doing it is to get outdoors and have an active lifestyle. “The biggest goal is increasing physical activity,” she said. “Children model (parents) behaviour. This is something you can do together as a family, or older children can do it themselves. It can be done

NHL is back in Winnipeg, who’s next? Now that the NHL has added a team in Canada for the first time since taking a pair away in the mid-’90s many Canadians are surely hoping the floodgates have opened. After all, there a number of teams in the U.S. struggling to stay afloat and a couple that are outright drowning. Atlanta is moving to Winnipeg, ending a four-year saga of fierce negotiating to get a team back in Canada, which seriously began with Jim Balsillie, of Research in Motion, trying to move the Nashville Predators to Hamilton in 2007. For the last two years, Winnipeg investors were looking to acquire the Phoenix Coyotes. Just a month ago it was looking pretty much like that would finally be the case. Then the City of Glendale and the NHL put the kibosh on that dream, guaranteeing the Coyotes one final year in the desert. As soon as that was over, True North Sports and Entertainment, who were looking to bring the Coyotes home, turned their attention to the strug-
Page 4
gling Thrashers franchise in Atlanta and voila, the deal is done, the team is moving and the saga is over. As it turns out there could be a lot more to come. Nashville is still clearly a precarious market and could require a move if the team slips again and the city loses all interest. The Coyotes were bailed out by the City of Phoenix, are under ownership of the NHL, and despite being saved for the 2011-12 season, have zero future in Phoenix beyond that, except under more NHL ownership. Phoenix’s dead franchise was, and still is, losing $25 million per season. Recent reports show that the Columbus Blue Jackets are also losing that amount each year. They may need a new city soon too. Quebec City wants a team, whenever they get their new arena built, but they could only house one franchise. There are now reports that a Seattle group is interested in an NHL team. They will need a new arena too. Microsoft is not part of that group. Southern Ontario is still looking for a team. There will probably need to be an NHL-quality arena built there as nothing in Hamilton, KitchenerWaterloo or London will fit that bill. Copps Coliseum in Hamilton holds 17,000, but it may not have the facilities necessary to support all the nuances of having an NHL team. So there are places for all three teams, though arena work needs to be done. The recession, it seems, is finally catching up to the NHL teams in poor markets. The Florida Panthers must be ready to close up shop anytime now. Where should they go? Maybe they’ll be a Vegas sideshow. Any other franchises in trouble? The California teams are hopefully playing well enough to keep an avid fan base. They accounted for three of the eight western teams in the playoffs this year. The NHL went after large American television markets with big corporate sponsors. Those corporate sponsors have lots of money, but they don’t want to lose millions of dollars each year. TV markets are great, but once the networks realize hockey viewership in the U.S. is on par with basketball in Canada, they will pullout. The NHL needs to be a little more choosy than they have been in the last 15 years when finding supporting cities.
Our Past June 5, 2002 Al Francis of Midale received a lot of attention for this 1932 Chev. Confederation Deluxe sedan which was on display at the World of Wheels classic car show on Saturday afternoon on the former OK Economy Store parking lot along Souris Avenue.

RM of Estevan still under road bans Road bans are scheduled to continue until June 7 in the RM of Estevan. That was council’s decision at its May 23 meeting. Council will make a determination with regards to lifting the bans at that point or continuing with them based on road conditions. The bans are everywhere in the RM, permitting access for some, like farmers, with conditions. “We still have 19 roads with water on them,” said Greg Hoffort, the RM administrator, last week. “Our priority is for people accessing their houses.” There will be some work to be done on many of those roads once the water subsides. Hoffort noted most of that work can be done by the RM’s own road crews. There will have to be
an assessment of each road and he said there would likely need to be a number of culvert installations. The local state of emergency also continue across the RM because of the continued flooding of the roadways. Council is currently making plans for disaster recovery efforts including deliberations on requirements for future river and water course capacity in the municipality. “Council is spending a lot of time dealing with what can be done better. It’s a major event.” He said however, the amount of flooding is rare and when council discusses matters they take into account the infrequent nature of these circumstances. What needs to be done and

whether or not they really need to prepare for an event of this magnitude again is being debated. The requirements on building above the flood plain are not issues that are open to debate at this point. “That will not change,” said Hoffort. Council approved one new oil-well licence and development. A single parcel, country residential subdivision was also approved, which will accommodate a farmhouse on the 10-acre parcel. Council made its annual contribution to the Estevan Comprehensive School’s Chem-Free Grad, and they approved a community event licence to the Estevan Motor Speedway, allowing them to serve liquor.
Last week 19 roads in the RM of Estevan were still under water. Road bans were extended until June 7, at which point council will review whether a further extension is necessary.

Nova Scotia hospital evacuated for bomb threat Provincial REGINA - Bargaining is to resume in a labour dispute involving 3,000 Saskatchewan health workers after talks stalled nearly a month ago. The Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan says it has agreed to meet with the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations, which represents employers. The two sides last met May 10 and plan to meet next Wednesday in Regina. Union president Cathy Dickson says there won’t be any more job action by therapists, paramedics and others before the meeting. National OTTAWA - Get ready to offer up your opinion on how to reform Canada’s health-care system. Another high-profile group is putting together a big-name panel to consult the public, health-care professionals and experts — and then offer recommendations for reform. The Canadian Nurses Association is devoting a year to its national com-
mission, which will be co-chaired by health-law expert Maureen McTeer. It follows efforts by other groups, such as the Canadian Medical Association, that are also holding hearings and doing detailed research. McTeer said the flurry of consultations and task forces reflects a growing frustration over the lack of government-led discussion about how to renew the health-care system once the national funding arrangement expires in 2014. *** MONTREAL - The Quebec government has told a Montreal man that he cannot receive child-assistance benefits because his name appears on a United Nations terror watchlist. Abousfian Abdelrazik spent six years in forced exile in Sudan, some of which was spent in prison where he says he was tortured. A letter from the Quebec government furnished to The Canadian Press states that Abdelrazik cannot receive benefits for his two children as long his name appears on the UN list.
The letter advises him to get a certificate signed by the minister of foreign affairs stating he can collect child-care benefits. Abdelrazik has been unsuccessful to have his name taken off the list, even though he’s been formally cleared of the terrorist allegations by CSIS and the RCMP. *** BRIDGETOWN, N.S. - The council and mayor of a small town in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley quit en masse Tuesday because of financial problems, but there was little explanation beyond a terse statement on the town’s website. The statement said Bridgetown’s seven-member council lacks financial and human resources to manage those problems, and it is acting on the advice of accounting and legal consultants. “Due to the magnitude and complexity of the town’s financial problems ... town council of the Town of Bridgetown agreed to resign to make way for a quicker resolution of the town’s present difficulties,”

His mother, Jamie Howell, was arrested Sunday when police responded to a complaint of disorderly conduct at a laundromat in Chandler, Ariz. Chandler Police Det. *** TOKYO - An International Atomic Energy Agency team says Japan’s nuclear authorities underestimated the possibility of a massive tsunami hitting the Dai-ichi power plant but praised the overall response. The preliminary report submitted Wednesday said Japan’s response was exemplary. However, it added that the tsunami hazard for several nuclear sites was underestimated and called for greater preparation. Japan on March 11. *** SANAA, Yemen - Islamist militants who overran a southern town have killed five soldiers in an ambush, while fresh clashes erupted between government forces and fighters loyal to the country’s top tribal leader. The violence on Tuesday pushed Yemen even closer to the edge of a civil war. Nearly four months of mass protests calling for democratic reforms and the ouster of longtime President Ali Abdullah Saleh have rocked the stability of this impoverished corner of the Arabian Peninsula, where government control is weak outside the capital Sanaa and an active alQaida branch and other militant groups operate.

Make a difference. Think outside the box and see if there is a way to use your skills to help others. Are you good at directions? Volunteer to drive and deliver meals to seniors and shut–ins. Are you great at planning events? Host a fundraiser for a cause you’re passionate about. Visit Christian Children’s Fund of Canada’s website www. ccfcanada.ca for tips on how to run a successful event. Though volunteering may not contribute to your sports car fund, it will pay off in the long run as employers look fondly on individuals who show initiative and work hard. Finding a job is tough in a competitive market and struggling economy. Make this summer count and employers may just give your resume a second look.

Winnipeg’s NHL team to have second highest ticket prices in Canada NATIONAL PARIS -Aformer French Open champion was too much for Canada’s Rebecca Marino to handle. The Vancouver native had her run at Roland Garros come to an end Friday with a 6-0, 6-4 loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round. The 20-year-old Marino had never been that far at a Grand Slam and had the misfortune to face the Russian who won the event in 2009. She was clearly out of her depth in the first set, which lasted just 17 minutes. *** WINNIPEG - Fans of Winnipeg’s new NHL franchise are being asked to pay a higher price for tickets on average than all but one existing Canadian team. True North Sports and Entertainment will open a pre-sale on season packages at 2 p.m. ET Wednesday. Ticket-holders and corporate partners of the American Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose will be given the first chance to buy seats before they’re opened to the general public on Saturday. Seats at the MTS Centre will be priced over seven different tiers at an average of $82 — the same price Montreal Canadiens fans paid last year at the Bell Centre and behind only the Toronto Maple Leafs ($114 average) in Canada, according to the most recent franchise valuations by Forbes. The new Winnipeg owners are hoping to get commitments for 13,000 season seats before the NHL board of governors meet June 21 to vote on the sale of the team. *** VANCOUVER - Is there a lucky loonie buried in the ice at Vancouver’s Roger’s Arena? Should it matter? Any NHL player with a scruffy playoff beard will tell you that luck counts. Fans and players alike are always looking for signs or omens that portend a win and there seems to be no stronger sign of Canadian hockey luck than a loonie buried in the ice. But no one in Canucks management was admitting to embedding a superstitious advantage. Even if the presence of a lucky loonie for tonight’s game isn’t known, supersti-
tious Canucks fans are eyeing a trend in sports history. INTERNATIONAL ROME - Former Lazio captain Giuseppe Signori was among 16 people arrested on Wednesday for alleged involvement in a match-fixing and betting ring throughout Italy. Others arrested included current players in Serie B and C, executives for lower-level clubs and betting operators. The police operation was based in Cremona and arrests were carried out in more than 10 cities across the peninsula. Matches under investigation included some involvingAtalanta and Siena, prosecutors said, which could put the two clubs’ recent promotion back into Serie A at risk. *** WELLINGTON, New Zealand - New Zealand rugby star Sonny Bill Williams will
have his fourth professional boxing bout on Sunday, stepping into the ring against a Tongan gospel singer 18 years his elder. Williams will fight Alipate Liava’a in a sixround heavyweight contest in Auckland, trying to extend his undefeated record as a professional. Williams said a lot of people “have had a crack at me” over his choice of opponents which so far have included a nightclub bouncer and forklift driver. The 43-year-old Liava’a concedes height and weight to the All Blacks centre and has won just four of 11 career bouts. He is a gospel singer who will use the proceeds from the fight to fund the release of an album. *** TOKYO - Sumo has been cleared to resume its normal tournament schedule

Thank You How does one begin to say thank you to such a large group of people? This community, province, country and even people in the opposite corners of the world have shown us the compassion and generosity that the human spirit is capable of. Just as Jeff has shown us all what one single person can do to be here for the ones he loved. Jeff faced insurmountable odds head on and with a bravery that could and should inspire us all and I know he was able to do that with the strength he drew from the unending support he received. Although all of us now have a feeling of emptiness at such a great loss, we are able to take comfort in knowing that Jeff has left a legacy of courage, kindness and an unforgettable spirit that will live on long past his days. We would like to extend a personal THANK YOU to everyone for everything big and small, every prayer, thought or subtle gesture. We are eternally grateful. - Keri & Maya; Walter & Bea; Heidi, Jason, Sophia & Emma; Jeremy, Wendy, Ryan & Tyler, Wally, Annette, Lynaia, Alyssa, Tanisha & Kade Lukye

Pie in the face
A group of Grade 8 girls at Pleasantdale School have spearheaded fundraising for Relay for Life over the last few weeks. The last of the their fundraisers was a pie throw that allowed other students the opportunity to get their names selected for a chance to throw a pie in the face of one of the girls. The school raised $1,535 for the Relay for Life through these efforts.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, JUNE 3, 2011 me. Is it advisable to reset the screws or hinges to close the gap? The unit is made of particle board, but is pretty sturdy. -- A Reader, via email
By Samantha Mazzotta Shelf Doors Need Small Adjustment Q: I purchased a shelf unit for my bathroom, one of those put-it-together-yourself things, that includes a set of doors on hinges. I built everything according to directions and used the pre-drilled holes to set the hinges and hang the doors. However, they don’t meet in the middle -- there’s a threequarter inch gap between them. I don’t know if this was intentional, but it bugs
A: The adjustment on both sides would be just over a quarter inch. This should be far enough to drill new screw holes that would hold securely without damaging the area near the old screw holes. So, I say, go for it. Just remember the old adage to measure twice, cut once. As you noted, the particle board material of the unit means that once it’s put together, you should avoid removing any of the screws or nails as they likely can’t be put back in the same place and still securely hold the boards together. So you’ll need to measure
and mark the distance you want to shift the doors while they’re still hanging, on both the high and low hinges. Double- and triple-check to ensure the upper and lower hinges will sit in line with each other so that the door hangs straight. Using a helper to keep the door from tearing away, carefully unscrew the hinges where they meet the door and lift the door away. Locate the marked area (and here’s another good time to check the measurements). Drill pilot holes that are significantly smaller in diameter than the hinge screws. With your helper holding the door in place, reattach the door to the hinge at the new pilot holes. Test the door to make sure it opens

and closes properly. Repeat all this with the second door. Once the doors are rehung, fill the old screw holes with wood putty, let dry, sand smooth and touch-up with paint or stain to match the rest of the unit.

Nancy Drew Book Q: I recently found a 1930 edition of “The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene, which I believe is the first book in the Nancy Drew series. It is missing its original dust jacket, but appears to be intact and in excellent condition. What is it worth? -- Myra Lou, Franklin County, Mo. A: According to “All About Collecting Girls’ Series Books by John Axe
(Hobby House Press), the first edition of “The Secret of the Old Clock is worth about $300 with cover. *** Q: I purchased an old railroad lock manufactured by Wilson Bohannan of Brooklyn, N.Y., at a garage sale, and I wonder if it has any value. I have searched the Internet, but have not been able to find out anything about either the company or the lock. -- Pat, Sun City West, Ariz. A: According to David J. Thebodo, an Iowabased railroad appraiser, two sources that might be beneficial are the National
Railway Historical Society, P.O. Box 58547, Philadelphia, PA 19102; and Key, Lock and Lantern, a club for railroad collecting enthusiasts. Dave Hamilton is the contact person for the club, transportsim@aol.com. I don’t want to derail you, but Thebodo pointed out that most railroad locks are marked with the name of the line. For example, a Southern Pacific or Santa Fe lock is identified as such. The pictures you sent me show no such ID marks. *** Q: My brother discovered four glasses marked “Mission, which he be-

Another medicine often prescribed is Lyrica, a drug whose primary purpose is seizure control. Heat and massage might decrease pain. Exercise is an essential part of treatment. It sounds absurd to ask someone in pain to exercise, but a care-

Summer Salsa When tomatoes and peppers are ripe and plentiful, folks will wonder what to do with all that produce. Salsa is one good option. How hot the salsa is depends on the kind of peppers that are used. Peppers are rated according to their hotness on a scale called the Scoville Organoleptic Test. The hottest variety is habanero, with a rating of 300,000 Scoville Units. The habanero resembles an orange lantern. Typically, the hotter peppers are smaller varieties (1-3 inches at maturity) and are colored ‘green-turning-red.’ When working with hot peppers, be sure to wear gloves to prevent burns. Just cutting a habanero open, for example, can make a person’s eyes
water! Milder peppers tend to be larger (4-10 inches) and are ‘yellow-turning-red.’ Examples of milder peppers include Bell peppers and Sweet Banana peppers, which are rated at 0 Scoville Units, and so are very mild. More in the mid-range would be jalapeño peppers. They are rated at 5,000 Scoville Units and are tapered green or red chilies. Adjust the spiciness of the salsa by selecting the type of pepper added to the mix. For a very mild salsa, use milder peppers. For a very hot salsa, use a greater proportion of hotter peppers to milder ones. Regardless of the product’s spiciness, don’t just add more peppers to make it hotter. The total amount of peppers should be the amount recommended in the procedure. The proportions are calculated out so that the recipe will be safely preserved. It also is a good idea to try out the peppers you plan
to use in your salsa by trying half of a hot pepper first, stirring the salsa, letting it sit for a few minutes and tasting for heat. See if the temperature is what you expect and what you prefer. It’s easier to adjust the mix of peppers in the salsa to gradually make it a little hotter by adding more peppers than it is to deal with an excessively hot and spicy salsa after it’s prepared. If someone finds your salsa a bit too hot, you might try serving it with some sour cream or salty chips to help calm that spicy flavor. This recipe for Spicy Fruit Salsa combines hot peppers and juicy summer fruits. It’s perfect for a snack or appetizer and also is delicious as a topping for fish, chicken or pork. THE KITCHEN DIVA’S SPICY FRUIT SALSA Salsa is a healthy, versatile condiment. Adding fruit to this traditional salsa recipe gives it a boost of additional healthy nutrients. 1 large, firm-but-ripe
mango, peeled and cubed 1 large, firm-but-ripe peach, peeled and cubed 2 large, firm-but-ripe tomatoes, cored, seeded and coarsely chopped; or 16 grape or cherry tomatoes, cut into quarters 1 cup diced red onion 1 or 2 fresh jalapeños, stemmed and minced 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon honey or agave syrup, optional 1/3 cup finely chopped cilantro 1. In a large bowl, combine mango, peach, tomatoes, onion, jalapeños, lime juice, chili powder, salt and honey. Stir well to combine. 2. Cover and refrigerate

ALL MY CHILDREN Madison and Ryan’s baby didn’t survive, leaving the parents grief-stricken. Scott told JR that Marissa was too good for him. David became suspicious of Erica after he found her carrying a bottle of pills with someone else’s name on it. Kendall admitted that she had feelings for Griffin. Tad kissed Cara after she thanked him for helping her brother. Marissa and Bianca’s friendship showed signs of developing into something more. Wait to See: David gets closer to the truth. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Taylor made sure to be there emotionally for Ridge as his marriage began to crumble. Stephanie assured Thomas that he did the right thing by lying about sleeping with Brooke. Liam and Hope realized that Tawny had been intercepting their text messages. Whip turned to his co-workers to help him cope with the end of his marriage. Steffy gave Brooke a piece of her mind. Liam told Amber that it was over between them. Wait to See: Brooke makes a surprising offer. DAYS OF OUR LIVES EJ’s plan to murder Rafe’s imposter was derailed when Taylor arrived at the pier instead. Daniel was surprised by Jennifer’s seductive new look. Dario admitted to Melanie that he had feelings for her. EJ and Taylor finally made love. Sami found herself trapped alone with the imposter. Daniel told Jennifer that he liked her just the way she is. Chloe was excited about her date with Quinn, unaware of his dark side. Wait to See: Quinn is revealed to be Vivian’s son.
