Brian McKinnon
Brian McKinnon has been the general manager for Sherritt Coal Ltd. for two years, but has worked in the industry for 25 years in total. McKinnon and his wife moved to Estevan two years ago so he could begin this exciting chapter in his life. With the kids gone, McKinnon and his wife keep very busy. His wife is a teacher and is constantly subbing. As for McKinnon, he’s got his hands full at the mine. McKinnon said he loves Estevan because there is never a dull moment. Q. How long have you been working at Sherritt Coal Ltd.? A. I’ve been with this company since 1985, so 25 years. I came here in August 2008 from central Alberta. Q. What are some changes happening at Sherritt Coal Ltd. in Estevan this year? A. In Estevan I think the biggest change will be the activated carbon plant. In a couple of weeks it should be starting to produce some kind of product. Again we are always hiring so some of the big things we are going to try and implement are some safety programs, and we’ll be focusing on safety and training. Q. What is the activated carbon plant? A. We take our lignite, which is the coal, we run it through a multi-hearth which is a big furnace, it heats up the lignite, it burns off the volatiles, we grind it up, we heat it up with steam and then we put a chemical on it, so when it comes out it’s activated; it’s like baby powder. What they’ll do is take it to a plant and they’ll inject it into the stack and when they do that the mercury attaches to it. Q. What do you think of Estevan? A. I like Estevan; we’re really busy. My wife is a teacher so she’s been busy subbing, and she’s teaching a lot. This company, the mine is very involved in the community, we support a lot of things whether it’s football, baseball, wildlife, whatever, we attend all of those things. We find Estevan a fun place to be, there’s lots to do. Q. How would you respond to the criticism the company receives from those concerned about the environment? A. I think people should come out for a tour because we do have tours and they
should actually come out and see what the land looked like before we mined it and what it looks like after. People are impressed after they see what we do; it’s easy to drive by on the highway and criticize. Q. Do you think Sherritt contributes to pollution in Estevan? A. I don’t think so. I think, of course we supply coal to the power plants, and the power plant is trying to meet their emission targets, so they’re looking at their clean coal technology. You know people say they have a cough, but you know it could be who knows? There’s a lot of water lying around with mould. Q. What are some new initiatives Sherritt is taking on to help reduce its carbon footprint? A. We do have some stuff going on in Fort Saskatchewan with clean coal technology, and we are doing some tree planting here. All the mines are trying to reduce their backlog to get more

When it comes to associating fashion with Estevan, I was skeptical to say the least. Coming from Ontario, home of Toronto and every fashionista’s dream, I had heard my fair share of what I should expect the people out here to “look like.” They are all farmers in coveralls, a few told me. Don’t wear makeup or heels because people will talk, another proclaimed. Buy sneakers, said one; and get used to wearing blue jeans and a ratty T-shirt, joked another. To my surprise this was not the case at all. People in Estevan have style, the women wear heels and makeup and not all the men are farmers in coveralls. I was relieved. A city girl like myself loves getting dolled up for no reason, and has accessories coming out the ying yang; more than I know what to do with. I feel as if now I can blend in; as much as that’s possible. Of course I still get the eye or whisper from folks around the city, curious people wondering where this lady has come from. Well I come from Hamilton, Ontario and now I found my favourite places to shop in Estevan. It took me about three weeks but I did it. Jenny Joans and Warehouse One are my first choice when it comes to meeting my fashion needs; they have hit it right on the nose. It was hard to adjust to the somewhat, lack of variety in fashion and fashion accessories, but I find myself doing quite well and all my fashion needs are met and even with a few extra wants thrown in on the side of course. I will admit it was a bit of a culture shock coming from a city with four malls and an endless array of clothing and shoe shops in the heart of it’s downtown core, but I do not feel I am missing out on the hottest fashions from the latest designers because Estevan seems to keep up with the name brands.

New pressures on farm sector coming

We have seen record prices set on land in Europe, Alberta, and areas of the United States, not based on its ability to generate farm returns, but because of other influences. ‘Getting more kids involved in Coal Country Run could curb road to obesity’ By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury The number of entries in this year’s Coal Country Run in Roche Percee was better than ever in the last three years, and event organizers could not be more proud of participants. This year’s winners of the five-kilometre and 10-kilometre run finished with the fastest time organizers have seen yet, said Kim Pastachak, event organizer. “We are really happy with the Coal Country Run, it’s our third annual event. These are incredible times considering it’s a tough course, she said. Robert Courteau from Roche Percee finished the 5 km run with the time of 25 minutes, 26 seconds, and Marcel MacFarlane from Carnduff finished the 10 km run with the remarkable time of 38.06. Debbie Knight, event organizer, said the event brought in runners all the way from Yorkton, Saskatchewan and even Alberta. “The number of entries are up from last year in these two events, so we’re really excited how the event has grown in the five and 10-k events.

Organizers say this year’s Coal Country Run was a success, but would have liked to see more children and teens taking an interest in the event. “We had a wide variety participants-- those that ran, those that walked and some even dressed up and walked as a team, said Knight. Adult participants were not required to collect pledges but did pay an entry fee of $30. As for the 27 kids who participated in the Kids Mini Mile, they collected a grand total of $3412.58, said Knight. However, Pastachak said the only disappointment was the decrease in children who attended the
event. She said children are their main concern and they will be conjuring up new ways to get kids and teenagers involved and keep them on the move. Knight said with the alarming increase in the number of obese children in society, it is important to keep kids active nowadays. “With all the talk of inactivity amongst our children these days, this is a terrific way to get kids moving and be involved in their community at the same time, she said.
Top girl racer in the children’s division went to Jenna Grube who finished with the time of 8.06 in the Kids Mini Mile. Top boy racer was awarded to Dustin Gerle who finished with the time of 7.29. Both children are from Estevan. Winners of each category in both divisions were given medals to honour their victories. Knight said they will continue to keep this event family-focused and are really excited at the prospect of the future expansion of their little fun run.

Crime doesn’t pay, no pension plans for criminals in federal prison PROVINCIAL The domed stadium promised to downtown Regina is not moving as ahead as it should be says Premier Brad Wall. An update of the stadium’s status is to be released later in the month. Wall said that he expects it’s too soon to say whether or not the facility is moving ahead. Wall said in March that the only way the project would require federal involvement to be able to move forward, but there has been little progress. Wall said he isn’t sure the stadium will be at a go or no-go because the federal government’s role, if any, in the project is unclear. ••• A man was found last Friday south of Wollaston Lake in northern Saskatchewan after he chopped down power poles to draw attention to himself. The man was found by crews from SaskPower, who responded to the destructed power, and ventured out to find the cause. The discovered the downed poles, as well as the man who was very happy to see them. James Parker, a spokesman for the Crown utility said
the man had been on the lake when bad weather struck and ended up in a bush stranded for a few days with no food and his boat for shelter. Those in surrounding communities who went without power when the poles were tampered with said the man should have had the proper survival gear to look after himself. NATIONAL A Calgary father has been charged and found guilty of failing to provide his 16-monthold daughter, Sommer, with the necessities of life. Jonathan Hope was sentenced to 2 ½ years in prison for the death of his daughter four years ago. Hope’s daughter died after ingesting methadone. Lisa Guerin, the girl’s mother, was charged with the same crime and sentenced to 2 ½ years in jail. The judge said Hope did nothing to help his daughter even when he knew something was horribly wrong. ••• Harper government says they want to bring in a legislation that cuts off old-age pen-
sions for those serving time in federal prison. The legislation is a response to the outcry from victims’ groups after hearing the news that prisoners, including serial killer Clifford Olson, are eligible to collect a pension while behind bars. The changes would prevent prisoners from being able to apply for old-age security and guaranteed income supplement payments, said Human Resources Minister Diane Finley. Finley added that the legislation would affect approximately 400 people in federal prisons. The government is hoping that the provinces and territories will agree to cut off another 600 prisoners in jails. The decision to cut off federal prisoners would save about $2 million a year, which would rise to $10 million if provincial prisoners were to be included. Prisoners would be allowed to apply for pensions upon their release. INTERNATIONAL On Tuesday world leaders demanded there be an investi-
gation into Israel’s deadly raid on a Gaza-bound humanitarian aid and the immediate release of their seized citizens. Nations across the world have now condemned Israel for what Turkey’s prime minister called a “bloody massacre.” An emergency session for the UN Security Council in New York called for “ a prompt, impartial, credible and transparent investigation” that satisfies international standards. The world body and NATO insisted that all six vessels and the hundreds of Palestinian supporters on board are to be released. ••• The world’s leader in personal computer making said it will be cutting 9,000 jobs in the next few years as it is making a $1 billion investment in fully automated data centres. Hewlett-Packard said the investment represents the next generation of its commercial services business. The plan is to take a charge of approximately $1 billion over the next few years for the technology upgrade that will enable its clients to run their businesses quicker and more efficiently.

‘Estevan Idol shows world talent exists in southeast corner of Saskatchewan’ will showcase Junior Idol performances and again send five hopefuls packing. The final night will feature both groups and three lucky contestants from each category will be chosen. Contestants winning
By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury For eight years, Estevan Idol has been illustrating to the world the talent that hides in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan. Producing talents like Chris Henderson, previous Estevan Idol winners have gone on to do amazing things with their musical career, said Travis Frank, producer of Estevan idol. “This is our eighth consecutive year. In the past years we have had a lot of success with our winners,” he said. This year seems to be just as promising, said Frank, and judges have already chosen favourites. “I won’t say who I think is going to win, but I know the judges have a few people they are keeping their eye on to see how good they do during the show,” said Frank. This year’s panel includes Rosanne Dirpaul, Nathan Pylypuk, and Dustin Hall. On the final night of the event, Chris Henderson will be featured as the guest

we have never seen, so it’s going to be a good show I think,” said Frank about this year’s talent. ‘Estevan fashion scene sets record straight: city keeps up with latest trends’ By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury Estevan has come a long way in the fashion world and shed its lacklustre stigma of blue jeans and a T-shirt. “It used to be very, very casual. Everything was jeans and tops and hoodies; now I’m finding that we are selling dressier. I think women stepped it up a notch, and I think everything, fashion as a whole, has stepped it up to the dresses and the skirts. “I think people want to look good and they want to be on top of the fashion trend, it’s no more just slopping around in their sweats,” said Gail Hilstrom, manager of Fashion Sense. Although it may seem

things is Silver jeans, that is a big, big seller for us. I think it’s because it’s a proven jean, it’s at a great price point, it’s not over the top, and people always come looking for it,” said Pettitt. For those women aged 35 and better, practicality seems to play a role in choosing the right outfits, which can be worn to multiple occasions, said Doris Weinrauch, owner of Streetwear. “We are not selling as many dresses as normal. People are coming in and being more economical in a way; they’re looking for capris and a jacket, something dressy enough to wear to a wedding or anniversary or grad, but then they can
utilize it after. “People are definitely going a little more casual than glitzy,” said Weinrauch. Hilstrom said she thinks women in Estevan are looking for a little more than just an outfit. “What I think most women want when they come in here is a shopping experience. I think a lot of women like to see what we have and be waited on,” she said. Catering to the needs of every small city gal can be tough, but the key is knowing your customer. “I think over the years we’ve really learned to listen to our customers, really try to be on trend as far as what

they are looking for. “We are a small town store and we have clientele from everywhere in Saskatchewan and Alberta come here and shop over the phone and shop online, so we’ve really sort of learned to listen to what they are looking for,” said Pettitt. What women want, in the world of fashion, can vary from season to season or even day to day, said Weinrauch. The only way to keep on track and remain current is to personalize each customer. “When it comes to fashion, women change their minds from time to time and season to season. Myself, I’d have to say I have almost 24 years dressing people in Es-
tevan and the Estevan area, so you do have an idea. “When I go to market I keep people in mind. When I look at a dress say I think ok, that’s a Linda dress, so I need to order that because Linda will like it,” said Weinrauch. Hilstrom agrees, the customer is the focal point, and satisfying their cravings is the goal. “When we go to market, quite often we shop thinking this will fit a particular lady or a particular group, so definitely we shop for our clientele. When we do get new things in our store I am not afraid to call people that have been in. We are definitely looking out for our customer.

as though the city hasn’t much to offer its women in terms of fashion, looks can be deceiving. “We are right on term. You’ll find stuff here that you’ll find at the same time in Europe, it’s not like we’re behind at all. “I buy the same things as buyers buy in New York, California, the U.K., everywhere. We don’t keep anything longer than a season, so you always find what’s completely on trend,” said Jen Pettitt, owner of Jenny Joans. Pettitt said her hottest item in stock is Silver jeans, which she said people gravitate towards because of the great fit. “One of our biggest

“For the most part I think we are watching pretty close and staying on top because we do all our own marketing. We have a wide group of staff members that work here that are of all ages, so they are always constantly surfing the ’net and telling us what they find,” said Hilstrom. All of the store owners and managers agree that in order for their services to be utilized in the most efficient way, women mustn’t be afraid to speak their mind, and let their salesperson know what they expect. “I think that sometimes people, if there is stuff they are looking for and can’t find, if they come in and tell me, when I go to market I
can definitely look to pick up those trends. “People just have to let us know that they are open to letting us find things for them. Once they figure out that I’m not just giving them a sales pitch, and I really do know where things are in the store and how the particular fit is,” said Hilstrom. Pettitt said she places her confidence in her staff, and assures women that the women at Jenny Joans will get you what you want, when you want it. “I have great staff that I pride myself in that can find you any kind of outfit, any kind of way and make you happy. We’d like to think that we can satisfy your cravings,” said Pettitt.

Dog was the word this Sunday at humane society’s 15th dog jog By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury The dogs strutted their stuff in the valley, south of the city last Sunday, at the Estevan Humane Society’s 15th annual Dog Jog. Doris Parkinson, the humane society’s treasurer, said they raked in a grand total of $5,866. The money will go towards pet supplies, vet bills and of course pet food. “This is to help with the humane society. We are always trying to put new things in our building. Of course we have to feed the dogs and cats and other animals. “ We a r e q u i t e h a p p y with what we got yesterday,” said Parkinson. However, compared to last year’s $6,020.61, it seems the people in Estevan have lost a bit of interest in the event, possibly due to weather conditions at this year’s jog, said Doris Lischke, a volunteer at the humane society. However, Lischke said every bit helps and she could not be happier with the outcome of this year’s event. “Everybody brought their pet and some people just came and took pets out of the humane society and walked them. Everybody put a lot of time and energy into dressing themselves up and their pets up, it was just a nice outing for people to do,” said Lischke. Prizes were awarded to those who raised the first, second and third highest amounts of money through their pledges and those dogs that proved to be real show stoppers. This year’s panel of judges included Cara Finkle and Brett Ludtke from the Prairie Animal Health Centre and Cindy Beaulieu from the Estevan Mercury. Raising $2,105, Layne Gilroy took home his very own Giovanni 110cc Mini Beast Quad. Coming in second was his sister, Jordan Gilroy, who raised $1,035, winning her a skateboard. Third place went to Jordon Reed, who brought in $914.75, winning him an Apple iPod. The prizes didn’t stop with the humans, the dogs had their time to shine, and shine they did. Charlie Jackson’s pal, Rally, took home the prize for best costume, Jayler Olver’s Yorkie, Brutus, claimed the best dog trick victory while Jordon Reed and Choco won dog/owner look-a-like. Events like these provided by services like the humane society are an asset to Estevan said Lischke.

The humane society takes in any animal, whether it be a bird, rabbit, cat or dog; no animal is turned away. The facility also offers pet owners alternatives for pet care, said Lishcke. “It offers a lodging for the animals if people want to go away, and for people that want to purchase animals.”

Advertising to children Written By The Public Health Nutritionists of Saskatchewan with the Support of Population Health Promotion, Sun Country Health Region Many commercials try to persuade us to buy food. Some suggest that a certain food will make us feel good or that acting a certain way gets a food reward. What are advertisers selling and what effect does it have on children? Advertisers use media to get their message out to the public. TV is the main way to reach young children, especially children from two-to-11 years of age. Children see three times more commercials today than in the 1970s. At least half of those commercials are for food and are shown during children’s programs. Young children watch about 21 food commercials a day. This does not include print, radio, Internet, video games or other media! Children are an important target group for marketers. Children have purchasing power, now because they influence parents’ buying decisions,
and in the future as an adult. Marketers easily persuade children, who do not yet have a sense of want versus need, with music, toys and contests. Food commercial claims are not technically false, but can confuse children and parents about what makes a food healthy. Most foods marketed to children are high in fat,
being popular, sports, and happiness with little mention of actual product content. Messages often imply that a food can lift your mood or tastes so good you cannot live without it. Children see people that trick, fight and lie to obtain food. What can you do to be a savvy consumer and teach children to be savvy
sugar and salt, and low in fibre and other healthy nutrients. About 80 per cent of foods intended for children are fast foods, sweets, and cereal. Breakfast cereals aimed at children have 85 per cent more sugar and 65 per cent less fibre than cereal products aimed at adults. Since TV advertising of less healthy foods is linked to obesity, these ads put children’s health at risk. Commercials link food with fun, play,
now and in the future? * Talk about the purpose of advertising * Ask why a product is a “must-have” * Encourage children to challenge advertisers’ claims * Watch commercial free TV or better yet, limit TV time * Be a role model for eating habits and behaviour * Don’t feel guilty for not buying the commercials’ foods
Even though TV may influence what a child wants, parents are still the most important factor for setting the family diet. Parents have control over whether the item purchased is the healthy choice. Look at the Nutrition Facts table to compare nutrients and select the best option. For example, a serving of breakfast cereal should have: * Total fat - 10 g or less * Trans fat - 0 g * Sodium - 480 mg or less * Fibre - 2 g is okay, 4 g is better, 6 or more is excellent * Sugars - 12 g or less Healthy Foods for My School (www. h e a l t h . g o v. s k . c a / healthy-foods-for-myschool) is a valuable tool for using food labels to select healthy packaged foods. For more information, contact Barb Wright, Public Health Nutritionist, Sun Country Health Region, Estevan; phone 637-2469 or e-mail: bwright@sk.ca

Week Long Dress Event
Regina student lands role in Riders100th anniversary documentary PROVINCIAL The CFL wants to see Roughriders quarterback Darian Durant top his allstar season in 2009. Roughriders offensive co-ordinator Doug Berry said they will be looking for Durant to continue what he has been doing while getting better at it. Berry said it is easy for someone as dedicated and committed as Durant to get better because he is “a student of the game.” Last year Durant completed 339 of 561 pass attempts for 4,348 yards with 24 touchdowns and 21 interceptions, earning him the title of West Division all-star. ••• Twenty-five-year-old Joel Mamchur crawled around a football field on Monday for the Partners in Motion documentary of the 100th anniversary of the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders. Mamchur is playing the role of Neil J. (Piffles) Taylor and re-enacted one of the more famous moments in team history. The moment described is the day Taylor, the Regina quarterback, had the
game stopped so he could find his glass eye, which had fallen out. Taylor’s story is but only one of the many to be retold in the one-hour documentary, which will cost $360,000 to produce. NATIONAL The B.C. Lions seem to have descended as low as they can go heading into training camp. The team that was once considered the mighty Lions has now dropped into the hopeful group. The significant change came just in time for the beginning of training camp earlier this week. Reasons for the downgrade are a result of the team’s performance in the last two seasons in which they were bumped from the top by the Calgary Stampeders and then forced to qualify for playoffs by crossing over to the East Division. ••• A $263,200 grant from the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program has made it possible for the Jasper Place Curling Club in Edmonton, Alberta to move forward with its

upgrades. The renovations are to occur in two phases. The first will be replacing the existing washrooms with a barrier-free design and adding a wheelchair lift to the viewing area to increase accessibility for those whose mobility is hindered. The second phase will be installing insulation and vapour barriers, as well as upgrading the plumbing and electrical systems in the viewing area in hopes of making the facility more energy efficient.

INTERNATIONAL And it’s on, again. The Los Angeles Lakers will be hosting the Boston Celtics in this year’s opening game of NBA finals on Thursday. The National Basketball Association’s most talked about rivalry will take centre stage, however, Kobe Bryant of the Lakers, said he refuses to get caught up in all the hype. Bryant said he didn’t “give a damn about it,” and it’s for “other people to get excited about,” because he only gets excited about winning.
