Italian crime crackdown seeks suspects in Canada National PITTSBURGH, Pa. - A former Ottawa police officer who was caught in an online teen sex sting after expressing his desire in a fetish chat room to experience the “gift of a 14-year-old’s virginity” was sentenced Tuesday to 10 1/2 years in prison. Paul Maher, 60, of Richmond, Ont., plans to petition the government in Canada to allow him to serve most of his jail time north of the border, public defender Thomas Livingston said after the sentence was imposed by a federal judge in Pittsburgh. Maher pleaded guilty in October to two counts: travelling with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct, and coercion and enticement of a person he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. He faced a mandatory

There’s less fussing, and a wooden splinter might absorb some liquid, causing it to swell enough to pop out a bit more on its own. • Trying to spot roof damage but not quite sure you’re ready for a trip up the ladder? Before you get up on the roof, get out your binoculars. You’d be surprised how much you can see from the ground. Do a cursory examination and then decide if anything needs a closer look. • “Cut kitchen sponges into smaller pieces. They clean as well as a larger sponge, and you can dispose of the smaller pieces when they get yucky.” -- O.C. in Michigan • “Need sliced mushrooms for your salad or recipe? They are hard to cut, but you might have a perfect tool for doing the job already in your kitchen. If you have an egg slicer, get it out. A motion to halt the shipment was filed in Federal Court last week, and a copy was obtained by The Canadian Press. The Sierra Club and the Canadian Environmental Law Association are asking the court to overturn a decision from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. They’ve also asked for an injunction to keep Transport Minister Chuck Strahl from signing off on any

other permit or authorization allowing Bruce Power to proceed with the project. *** VANCOUVER - British Columbia’s Opposition New Democrats have reached a compromise with a leadership candidate who refused to hand over his social media passwords as part of the party’s vetting process. The dispute threatened to derail Nicholas Simons’ candidacy, prompted a formal investigation by the province’s privacy watchdog and raised questions about how parties scrutinize candidates’ Internet personas to ensure they don’t contain potentially embarrassing headline fodder. Simons was the only candidate to refuse the request, arguing it would violate his privacy and the privacy of everyone in his Facebook network. Late Monday afternoon, the party and Simons issued statements signalling that they’ve settled the impasse. International ROME - Italian police say they are conducting a major crackdown against the ‘ndrangheta crime syn-
dicate, with suspects also being sought in Germany, Canada and Australia. Police were seeking to arrest 41 people, the vast majority in Italy, both in the southern Calabria region where the ‘ndrangheta is based, and in the north of the country, where the organization has recently expanded. Six suspects were being sought in Germany and five in Canada or Australia, according to a police statement. *** VIENNA - A court official says a recently detained retired Bosnian army general accused of war crimes by Serbia has been released on bail. Jovan Divjak, who defected from Serbia at the start of the 1992-1995 war, was taken into Austrian custody late Thursday at Serbia’s request. The case has sparked protests and diplomatic strains. Christa Zemanek, a spokeswoman for the court handling the case, says Divjak was freed after a €500,000 ($694, 500) bail sum was received. She said his passport has been confiscated and he is not allowed to leave Austria as proceedings continue.
*** CULIACAN, Mexico - Gunbattles between rival gangs killed 18 people in a northeastern Mexican town Monday, a day after seven police officers and an inmate died in an ambush of a convoy transporting prisoners in western Mexico. The fighting in the town of Abasolo erupted Monday morning and left at least 18
people dead, the Tamaulipas state government said in a three-sentence statement that offered no details. It said state and federal security forces had arrived in the town to restore order and investigate. The shooting came a month after shootings in the nearby town of Padilla also killed 18 people, several of them innocent bystanders.

International SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame is halting the use of hydraulic lifts to film football practices and will install remote-controlled cameras instead as part of a safety push spurred by an October accident in which a student filmmaker was killed when a lift toppled, university officials said Tuesday. The Rev. John Jenkins, Notre Dame’s president, said the new system fulfills a pledge made after junior Declan Sullivan died. “I said in the days after Declan’s death that we would do everything

National KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - It was “Hockey Morning in Kandahar” today as some former NHL stars shared laughs and played a pickup game of ball hockey with Canadian troops stationed in Afghanistan. Pierre Turgeon, Tiger Williams and Hall of Famer Lanny McDonald were among those who paid a visit as part of the so-called Team Canada trip to Kandahar Airfield. The trip is expected to be the last of its kind before Canada’s combat mission ends in July. *** LONDON, Ont. - Alberta skip Kevin Martin’s record 30-game winning streak at the Tim Hortons Brier is over. And it was a fellow Olympic gold medallist who ended it. Brad Gushue of Newfoundland and Labrador defeated Martin 9-4 at the John Labatt Centre on Monday night. Gushue scored three points in the eighth end and Alberta conceded the game. “If we’re going to go out, we might as well go out quick,” Martin said with a laugh. *** CALGARY - When players on the Canadian junior men’s hockey team are cut from the squad, people see blurry-eyed teens whisked away to the airport at the crack of dawn. That optic has become a tradition of the junior men’s selection camps. The women’s national team will hold their own selection camp for the first time in about a decade and a half starting April 2 in Toronto. A team of 21 players will be chosen from the 37 invited to represent Canada at the world championship in Switzerland later next month.

Estevan has more than just coal, oil If Estevan is supposed to be the Sunshine Capital of Canada, why isn’t that natural resource being tapped? Since coming to Estevan in early December, I’ve noticed this place truly is a perfect storm for energy production. Estevan really is unique in the plethora of ways energy can be produced here. The two big industries in energy are oil and coal. I get it; they are still the cheapest, most efficient means to power a country. But there are a lot of other alternative means to harnessing power that are above the ground, and these resources are found in Estevan more than most places. It’s sunny, and it’s windy. I’m not sure exactly how windy it is here compared to other parts of the country, but I get the impression it’s definitely above average. The energy companies are here; surely somebody realizes Estevan has more to offer than just what is under the ground. The sun will always shine, and the wind will always blow. Enbridge is taking advantage of these resources, investing in other areas, including both wind and solar projects near where I grew up in southwestern Ontario. Enbridge is already here. Estevan is definitely sunnier and easily as windy. I know that wind turbines are never going to provide the power that coal and oil do, but we are probably never going to be able to go back to the days when our power came from a small number of sources. It seems like it’s going to be a struggle to find a resource as efficient as either of those two options, but the change away from

those sources is necessary. Our power in the future may come from hundreds of sources and the need to develop those different kinds of energy production is imminent. Estevan is plentiful in terms solar and wind power. Right now that energy is going to waste. It’s already here and waiting. Estevan may not be the best place for hydro or even nuclear power, without any current reactors. But the sun and the wind? Estevan’s got that covered. Saskatchewan’s power comes primarily from coal, about 70 per cent, and much of that is mined and burned here in Estevan. Just because all the energy we need is available here in fossil fuel form, doesn’t mean you ignore the other options available. The fossil fuels are unsustainable and those methods of producing energy will be fossilized themselves. About five per cent of Saskatchewan’s energy comes from wind power, most of which comes from the Centennial Wind Power facility, near Swift Current. I don’t see any wind farms around here. That percentage could be hugely increased if Estevan started taking advantage of it. This part of the province is a hotbed for all kinds of renewable energy production and those industries should be booming here the same as oil and coal. There is so much potential in the surrounding area for investment in alternative energy projects. Estevan should be a leader in integrating solar and wind into the provincial energy grid. The resources are here. Estevan is after all, the Energy City.

The dangers of farming were brought home recently when I traveled to Gilbert Plain, Manitoba to meet Jason Lafreniere. Lafreniere worked for an area farmer and went to work one day in July 2007, at the farm’s seed cleaning plant. He was standing over the shield guard on an in-floor auger when a bearing went. It seized the auger, which twisted out of the floor slot and tore the shielding away. The Best of the Best Q: I’m planning to buy my first handheld drill, but I’m torn as to what to pick: a drill with a power cord, or a cordless drill? Don’t rechargeable drills have less power? -- Sandra U., Detroit A: For overall usefulness, I’d go with a rechargeable cordless drill. And I’d spend the extra money for a quality model. That way you’re going to get a tool that has plenty of power for several levels of household repair tasks and a good quality rechargeable battery that will last a good while. Of course, the top benefit of a cordless drill is ease of use: You just grab it out of the charger and take it anywhere in the house. No need to worry about how long the cord is or where your extension cord is at. *** Q: I’m utterly confused at all the varieties of nails out there. An 8-penny or “8d” nail is 2.5 inches long, while a 10-penny or “10d” nail is 3 inches long. • “Common” nails typically measure 6d, 8d or 10d and are used for simple repair tasks; they have a wider, flat head and no threading. • “Finishing” nails are
used for interior or exterior trim or paneling; they have small heads that can be driven below the surface and hidden under putty. • “Barbed” nails have small barbs pointing backwards from the tip and have more holding power than a common nail (but can destroy the wood when pulled out). • “Annular threaded” nails have a series of backward-facing grooves and are

A friend gave me this recipe and said “You just can’t beat it.” There must be something wrong with her; I can’t even eat it! --Unknown How many times have you been ready to cook and found you were out of a certain ingredient? Sometimes it’s inconvenient to run out and purchase the necessary ingredient -- it’s easier to use a similar product as a replacement. There are, however, several factors to consider when substituting ingredients. Take into account differences in flavor, moisture, texture and weight. Substitutions with an acid factor, such as molasses, need to be neutralized to avoid changes in the flavor and texture of the product. Differences in sweetening and thickening power need consideration in sugar and flour substitutions. To help avoid disappointments when substituting ingredients, understand the physical and chemical properties of all ingredients. Be sure to measure accurately. The following list gives substitutes that may be used to achieve a product that is similar to the original. There are, however, a number of factors to consider when substituting ingredients. Each ingredient in a recipe has a specific function. Substitution of one ingredient for another may alter the taste, color, moisture content or texture of the product. For this reason, it is suggested that ingredient substitution be used in unexpected situations only. Save this column, and if someday you don’t have one of the ingredients listed below, try these substitutions. Happy cooking!

Health & Wellness Who should take probiotics? • Anybody who has poor eating habits, high stress levels, or consumes an excess of alcohol. In fact, many public health officials say that probiotics are as important to regularly take as a multivitamin. That’s because so many current medical studies show that these good guys of
the microorganism world safeguard from harmful bacteria, yeast and fungi, while enhancing immune function, improving gastrointestinal health and supporting colon health. Because probiotics are entirely safe — the body excretes what it doesn’t need — and that they play such a huge role
in health promotion, they should be a core nutritional supplement. Udo’s Choice products are available at health food stores nationwide. More information or help finding a store in your area can be obtained toll—free at (888) 436—6697, or online at www.florahealth. com.

45% inulin, essential oils, vitamins and a broad array of minerals. The Chinese consider burdock to be strengthening and nutritive, making it an excellent tonic. It is traditionally used to cleanse and detoxify. Burdock can help protect cells against several toxic chemicals. Sheep Sorrel: This herb provides strong immune support and is a good source of vitamin C. Sheep sorrel was traditionally used to cool fevers and to aid in the removal of wastes by increasing urine flow. Slippery Elm: Folk medicine ascribes many traditional uses to slippery elm bark, which contains large amounts of mucilage. It is especially noted for its property of soothing inflammatory irritation and strengthening all the digestive organs. Turkish Rhubarb: This herb provides support to the digestive system, colon, liver and blood. This helps the body to detoxify, particularly in the bowels. It also helps neutralize harmful microorganisms in the gut. Blessed Thistle: It is prized for its bitter properties. Blessed thistle studies have shown that the herb normalizes the flow of digestive secretions, relieving indigestion and liver congestion
symptoms and normalizing bowel movements. Blessed thistle is also anti—bacterial. Red Clover: It is a blood purifier and facilitates the elimination of wastes and toxins through the skin, kidneys and bowels. Red clover has been used by many cultures to treat serious health conditions. Kelp: Used traditionally for the nutritive benefits of its abundant minerals, kelp is a great source of iodine, which helps regulate energy levels. The alginates in kelp protect against radiation by products such as strontium 90, plutonium and cesium and the health issues that can be a result of this radiation. Watercress: An aromatic edible wild plant, this superior food is a rich source of chlorophyll, vitamins A and C and many minerals including iron and iodine. Watercress has been found to have value in treating joint complaints and some circulatory problems. Floressence, the remarkable eight—herb healing tea is available at health food stores nationwide. Kick up your heels Love your heels? Here’s how to be stylishly comfortable this spring: 1. The right heel. Ideally, the heel should be no more than two inches or your posture may suffer. Stilettos or indented heels provide little support. 2. Ti m e o ff . H i g h heels should not be worn every day – they shorten the Achilles tendon and calf muscles. 3. Time out. Give your feet periodic breaks on the
days when you do wear heels. 4. S h o e s h o p p i n g . Shop late in the day – what may be comfortable in the morning might be too tight at night when your feet are swollen. 5. More shoe smarts. Leather and nylon mesh allow for breathing and flexibility. Ensure the shoes support your arch, and avoid thin or tight straps, which can cause painful swelling.

Best foot forward
Improve your strength and balance Taking a tumble can cause serious injury that affects your everyday life and independence. One of the best ways to reduce your risk of slipping, tripping and falling this spring is to improve your strength and balance. The Alberta College and Association of Chiropractors offers the following tips for staying on your feet. Strong legs for stability Strengthening your leg muscles can reduce the chance of falling if you do lose your balance, as strong legs help stabilize you. While any activity that uses your legs is good, it is important to find something you enjoy. Here are some easy suggestions. Brisk walking. Walking requires no special equipment other than a pair of supportive shoes. Make an after–dinner walk party of your daily routine or leave the car in the driveway and walk to pick up light groceries. There are many simple ways to get moving more often. Strength training. Exercises that target specific leg muscles can often be easily done at home – there’s no need to join an expensive gym. Or, if you enjoy being with a group, community centres often offer exercise programs for different age groups. Following is a simple leg strengthening exercise you can try at home. Leg extensions: This exercise can be done while watching TV or sitting at the
kitchen table. While seated, straighten one leg and gently lift it off the ground to a height that is comfortable for you. Hold for 10 seconds if you can. Lower that leg. Repeat with the other leg. As your strength grows, add ankle weights to give your legs even more of a workout. Boost your balance Your sense of balance is what keeps you on your feet. Poor eyesight, some medications and health conditions can cause dizziness or other balance problems. Keep these tips in mind: 1. Have an annual eye examination. 2. Review your medications, vitamins and herbal supplements with your pharmacist or family physician. 3. If you feel dizzy or faint, see a health professional for an evaluation. 4. Eat regularly and ensure you drink enough non–alcoholic, non–caffeinated beverages. Strength and balance work together to keep you steady. There are many activities that contribute to maintaining and improving balance and help build strength, such as swimming, cycling, Tai Chi, yoga, golf and dancing. Anything that gets you on your feet and moving will help maintain strength and balance. What is a good goal? Aim for 20 minutes of exercise at least three times per week. Even better, build some physical activity into each day. Your independence is worth it.
Running shoe shopping tips 1. Shop in the afternoon or evening, as your feet tend to accumulate fluid and swell throughout the day. What may have been comfortable earlier could now be tight. 2. Not all shoes are created equally. The same shoe sizes can have different fits depending on the maker. Try several sizes to find the most comfortable shoe. 3. Avoid buying shoes that you feel need a break in period. Shoes should be comfortable from the first time you put them on. 4. Select a running shoe store with knowledgeable staff that can provide advice on the shoe that best suits your activity, body structure and type of foot. 5. Most importantly, your running shoes should be comfortable. Go for a short jog inside the store to test them out. 6. To prevent injury, don’t forget to replace your runners every 750 kilometres or six months, whichever comes first.

The best part of the program was a toss up between the support and encouragement provided by the staff, and the fact that the program is based on regular food available at the grocery store. Health & Wellness Protecting your skin: the evolution of the bandage Many Canadians reach for the common bandage to help protect skin at risk of blistering, chafing and irritation. The elderly, those with splints or other orthopedic braces, persons with diabetic foot ulcers, as well as runners, cyclists and other athletes – all have a need to minimize the friction that can lead to painful skin problems. While effective, the ordinary bandage can only be used once due to the nature of the adhesive used in their manufacture. A new product, ReSkin, represents the first reusable, breathable and washable ban-
dage. It has been developed specifically to help protect against friction. This bandage employs a unique combination of Lycra mesh material and soft silicone-based adhesive. It can be worn anywhere on the body to help prevent the friction that leads to blisters and chafing. It is an ideal solution for the elderly, whose skin naturally thins with age, placing them at risk of a variety of friction-related skin injuries. Diabetes places people at increased risk of painful and potentially dangerous foot ulcers. Foot protection with a product like ReSkin can be an
important step in helping to prevent ulcers from forming or worsening. Active people on the go are frequently slowed or even stopped by the blistering, chafing and irritation that can be caused by shoes, clothes or equipment. Whether you are a runner, cyclist or someone who enjoys a long walk, friction can get in the way of your active lifestyle.Depending on the intensity of use, the unique soft silicone-based adhesive in ReSkin can be reused three to five times, providing users with a costeffective solution. And, to keep it clean and fresh, it is

easily washed with soap and water. Once dry, it is ready to be reapplied. This new bandage was developed in Belgium, originally for cyclists competing in the European Cycling Tour. It made its debut in Canada during the 2010 Shoppers Drug Mart Weekend to End Women’s Cancers. At last year’s event in Toronto 5,000 samples were distributed free-of-charge to walkers at the 8-kilometre mark, the distance where skin chafing and blistering normally start to occur. ReSkin will be sold nationally in Shoppers Drug Mart locations, beginning in March 2011. It is distributed in Canada by Bescot Healthcare Canada. More information is available online at www.reskin.ca.

Health & Wellness Do you know that kids also get arthritis? While there are many misconceptions about arthritis, perhaps the most common one is that only the elderly have it. In fact, approximately one of every 1,000 Canadians under the age of 16 – from toddlers to teens – struggle with the intense pain and disability of juvenile arthritis (JA). Here is what you should know about it:
• JA results from the body’s immune system not working properly. The immune system fails to recognize healthy body tissue and attacks it. Symptoms include excruciating pain and inflammation in the joints; • JA can also be associated with irregular growth, physical disability and inflammation inside

the eye; • Arthritis in children sometimes may last for as little as several months to a year and then disappear forever. Most children, however, have an up-anddown course for many years; • In about 30 per cent of cases, arthritis in kids continues into adulthood; • The causes of JA are
unknown and there is no cure yet, but an effective treatment plan – medication, physiotherapy, physical activity and rest – controls pain and helps to prevent permanent joint damage. More information about juvenile arthritis can be found on The Arthritis Society’s website at www. arthritis.ca.
Does your child have arthritis? The Arthritis Society has compiled a list of common warning signs to help identify the disease: • Pain, stiffness and warmth in the joints (for example: knees, elbows, fingers); • Stiffness in the morning or after waking from naps; • Limping or difficulty using an arm or leg; • Fatigue or loss of interest in recreational activities. JA is defined as continuous inflammation of one or more
joints lasting at least six weeks for which no other cause can be found. Therefore, you should consult a doctor if your child consistently experiences any of these symptoms for a few weeks. An early diagnosis and aggressive treatment plan can control the pain of arthritis and prevent damage to the joints. Once diagnosed with arthritis, a child’s treatment plan - including medication and rehabilitation therapy - will be coordinated by a doctor.

30th Anniversary Memorial Glenn Irven Granberg past away March 15, 1981. It was so difĂ€cult to let him go Though his death left us no other choice. We’re still mourning the loss of never seeing him again Of never hearing his precious voice. It seems that in life there are certain times Which are more than “simply unfairâ€?. When our hearts search out for better answers But cannot seem to Ă€nd them there. And such is the case at his passing. Contemplating the briefness of his life. All the great things that he would have done If he’d been granted a little more time. It isn’t difĂ€cult to envision the possibilities When we look at what he’d already done, The difference he made in so many lives In all that he had become. But regardless of the reason For why he had to depart, We still miss him every single day of our lives For he was the pride of our hearts! We admired him for being our example. Inspiring us through his courage and drive. We’ll cherish all the precious memories He lovingly created in our lives Forever in our hearts and lovingly remembered by your family.

Accordion Birthday Card in a Box Is there a birthday in your house? Make it special with this personalized “accordion card in a box that spills out highlights of each year of the birthday boy or girl’s life. The fun starts with rooting around the house for a small cardboard gift box. (Or, use a clean plastic deli or margarine tub with a lid that snaps on top.) Then, choose a character or theme to decorate the outside of the box. For example, if son Nick is turning 10, you might create a “Jack and the Beanstalk-style card in a box and call it “Nick and the Beanstalk. Here’s how: 1. Paint the outside of the box green. Cut out a leaf shape to cover the lid using craft foam or colored paper. Draw details with markers and glue the leaf on top of the lid. Now create a standup figure with craft foam to look like the birthday child and glue it on the leaf using a glue gun. You might wish to glue a photo of the child’s face onto the head of the figure. 2. Now comes the secret and rather clever part of your beanstalk greeting -- the leaves and the stem! For the stem, cut a strip of construction paper 3/4 inch wide and about 24 inches long (tape a couple of lengths together if your paper isn’t long enough). Fold the paper accordionstyle to fit perfectly inside the box (each fold should be the dimension of the base of the box). Glue the top accordion fold to the inside of the lid, and glue the bottom fold to the inside base of the box. Let dry. 3. Cut out a leaf shape for each year of the child’s life from construction paper. Make them a bit smaller than the inside of the box. Glue the leaf shapes in the sections between the folds. With a black marker, write one event or experience that stands out for each year of the child’s life. For example, “Had a buzz cut done by Dad; “Refused to eat vegetables; “Won Pinewood Derby race; etc. Gently fold the long beanstalk neatly in the box and replace the lid. At the birthday celebration, watch the birthday kid smile when he lifts the lid to see the beanstalk grow with a delightful mix of memories. Extra tip: The accordion card in a box is terrific birthday gift greeting and treasured keepsake for grandparents, aunt and
uncles, too. Simply make the beanstalk a little or a lot longer! *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day is airing on public television nationwide.
