ELKS cheque
The Estevan ELKS made a donation to the Johnson family of Bienfait, who lost their house to a fire Jan. 23. The $1,500 is meant to go toward buying things for the family’s children. Ben Anderson, far left, presented the cheque to Miles, Chris, Clinton, Lorna and Jennifer Johnson, along with fellow ELKS member, Matt Weinrauch.
Hot Wheels Q: I have an unusual Hot Wheels item, a Goodyear blimp. I have been offered $50 for it, but think it could be worth more. What is your advice? -- Freddie, Sun City West, Ariz. A: Take the money and run. According to Warman’s Hot Wheels by Michael Zarnock (Krause, $17.99), your Goodyear blimp was issued in 1992 and is currently valued at $5. *** Q: While sorting through some old magazines in my dad’s storage locker, I found three comics I think might be worth money. They are No. 34 in the “Crime Doesn’t Pay” series, No. 43 in the Master Comics series; and a No. 94 Gene Autry Christmas edition. All three are in excellent condition. -- Ralph, Stigler, Okla. A: I found your comics referenced in Golden Age Comics by Alex G. Malloy and Stuart W. Wells III (Krause, $19.99). Your first comic, “Elevator Shaft,” was published in 1942 and is valued at $500. Your most valuable comic, No. 43 in the Master Comics series, “Battle for Stalingrad,” was issued in 1943 and is worth $1,000. The Gene Autry “Christmas” comic is from 1946 and is valued at about $100. *** Q: I have several water glasses, wine goblets, small plates and a sugar-and-cream set in a glass pattern that I can’t identify. Can you help me? -- Joan, Sun City West,
Ariz. A: Although the pictures you sent me are blurred, I think the pattern you have is the Miss America Diamond Pattern, which was manufactured by the Hocking Glass Company between 1935 and 1938. It also has been reproduced. It was offered in several colors, including green, ice blue, pink and royal ruby. Your pieces are in crystal. For approximate values, you should invest
in a copy of Warman’s Depression Glass: A Value and Identification Guide by Ellen T. Schroy (Krause, $27.95). *** Q: I have two pieces of sports memorabilia -pennants of 1968 and 1984 featuring the Detroit Tigers -- and wonder if they have any value. -- M.E.H., Grosse Point Woods, Mich. A: I spoke to several collectors, and they seem to agree that your pennants are
worth about $20 each. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Consider moving beyond the usual methods to find a more creative means of handling a difficult onthe-job situation. Avoid confrontation and, instead, aim for cooperation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Seasonal change creates a new look for the outdoors. It also inspires Taureans to redo their own environments, and this is a good week to start redoing both your home and workplace. Enjoy. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A misunderstanding needs to be straightened out so the wrong impression isn’t allowed to stand. If necessary, offer to support the use of a third party to act as an impartial arbitrator. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A career change offering what you want in money and responsibilities could involve moving to a new location. Discuss this with family members before making a decision. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Feeling miffed over how you believe you were treated is understandable. But before you decide to “set things straight,” make sure the whole thing wasn’t just a misinterpretation of the facts. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Showing you care makes it easier to build trust and gain an advantage in handling a delicate situation. What you learn from this experience also will help you understand yourself better. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Planning for the future is fine, especially if you include the roles that family members may be asked to play. Don’t be surprised if some hidden emotions are revealed in the process. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Making choices highlights much of the week, and you have a head start here, thanks to your ability to grasp the facts of a situation and interpret them in a clear-cut manner. SAGITTARIUS (No-

vember 22 to December 21) Carrying a torch can be a two-way situation: It can either keep you tied to the past or help light your way to the future. The choice, as always, has to be yours. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your watchwords this week are: “Focus.” “Focus.” “Fo-
cus.” Don’t let yourself be distracted from what you set out to do. There’ll be time later to look over other possibilities. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A workplace opportunity might require changes you’re not keen on making. Discuss the plusses and minuses with someone familiar with the situation before you make a decision. PISCES (February 19
to March 20) Love and romance are strong in your aspect this week. If you’ve already met the right person, expect your relationship to grow. And if you’re still looking, odds are you’ll soon be finding it. BORN THIS WEEK: You approach life in a wise and measured manner, which gives you an edge in many areas. Perspective Expressed Opinions Jordan Baker Estevan Mercury Reporter
Parking lots: the dangers, the irritants There is one place where the rule of law doesn’t apply: parking lots. It appears everyone is wise to the reality that when it comes to a large parking lot, anything goes and it’s all fair game. Stop signs are suggestions, parking spaces are mere guidelines and stores have people who will gather up the shopping carts, so just leave them wherever is most convenient. It’s hard to believe but some parking lots in town look as though someone actively scattered carts around to cover as much of the lot as possible. It makes me think someone is sending messages to people in the sky
Page 4
that just can’t be deciphered from my lowly viewpoint. I would respect if these carts are actually being used to provide political satire for people flying above, but I don’t actually think the shopping cart chaos is a co-ordinated effort. It’s a more of a collective indifference to order. Parking lot courtesy goes way beyond letting pedestrians cross safely in their designated zones and driving carefully, though we can always use a little more of that. The shopping cart issue is an annoyance more than it is a serious problem. I don’t see it putting anybody in any immediate harm. But numerous times I have found a place to park, only to find, when I approached that a shopping cart had beaten me to the spot. I am surprised I haven’t borne witness to this yet, but I’m sure these carts get to some of these places because as soon as people are done loading up their cars, they look one way and give their cart a good push in the other. Wherever it ends up, the cart-collecting boy will find it. They have developed these huts that hang out in parking lots for no other purpose than to accept your shopping cart when you’re done with it. Somebody probably spent a lot of time designing these little huts, carefully getting the measurements right to best maximize the number of carts it will hold, while minimizing its effect on parking space. These are not to be ignored. Let’s try keeping parking lots as organized as we can, because stray shopping carts are just one more obstacle in an already interesting obstacle course. People drive a lot faster on the highway but I at least think they are paying attention. The blinders tend to go up as soon as drivers leave the confines of the open road. In the parking lots, people love to drive on diagonals, and I get it, sometimes I get tired of driving around the grid pattern of city streets, but stick to the grid. Cars aren’t equipped the same as boats with colour co-ordinating, right-of-way reflectors. And as always, let the pedestrians pass. It’s cold outside.

Saskatchewan offers “best job ever” PROVINCIAL REGINA - The Saskatchewan government is offering what it calls the best summer job ever to a student willing to travel the province. Tourism Minister Bill Hutchinson says the student will be dubbed the Saskatchewanderer. He or she will be responsible for collecting stories, photos and video for a blog. The idea is to talk to people in cities, towns, rural areas and at festivals to find out what makes the province great. Hutchinson says the idea comes from a highly successful blog Saskatchewan did from its pavilion at the Vancouver Olympics. Those interested have to be over 19 and must apply between Feb. 28 and March 11 at saskatchewanderer.ca. *** MOOSE JAW, Sask. - A Tutor jet from the Snowbirds demonstration squadron has made a wheels-up landing at 15 Wing Moose Jaw. The two pilots who were in the CT-114 walked away from damaged aircraft and were being checked for injuries. The names of the pilots were not released. Lt. Thomas Edelson says the Tutor was on a routine flight when it landed on its belly, skidding across the runway. It was not clear if the pilots had declared an emergency or if the aircraft had mechanical problems. The cause of the accident is under investigation. *** B U F FA L O N A R ROWS, Sask. - A police investigation into the shooting of three family pets by a dogcatcher in northern Saskatchewan is about to be turned over to prosecutors. The RCMP say in an email to The Canadian Press that investigators
estimate the file will be given to the Crown “within the next week or so” for an opinion on potential charges. The three dogs — Robine, Hood and Aiden — were shot last fall in Buffalo Narrows. Their owner, Nadia Persaud, pushed police to investigate why her dogs weren’t caught and held for 72 hours as per Saskatchewan’s stray animal law. Persaud said she thinks the problem is that municipalities and officials aren’t complying with the law. NATIONAL OTTAWA - The office of the federal Director of Public Prosecutions says election financing charges against four top Conservative party officials do not involve the Criminal Code, but are still considered “illegal activity.” The government is dismissing the charges against some of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s closest confidants as an “administrative” matter. The Liberals say that’s probably what Al Capone claimed when the Prohibition-era gangster was
arrested for income-tax evasion. *** CALEDONIA, Ont. A rally to mark the fifth anniversary of an aboriginal occupation in Caledonia, Ont. has revived tensions between some of the town’s residents and aboriginal supporters. Members of the local Six Nations reserve and aboriginal rights activists turned out on Sunday to block the path of a march led by Gary McHale, a vocal opponent of the occupation. “Let’s end this conflict right now,” a Six Nations woman told McHale and his group, urging them to turn around and go home. McHale and his followers were trying to place a monument near the entrance to a section of disputed land but were forced back by the protesters.

If that was Obama’s gambit, it has apparently worked. John Boehner, speaker of the House of Representatives, said in an interview published Monday that his party will indeed take steps to defend the Defense of Marriage Act, which faces legal challenges in several states, since the Obama adminstration says it won’t. In the same breath, he griped that Obama was playing politics.

Russian gov’t balks at Sochi 2014 mascots NATIONAL MONTREAL - A crowd is gathered today on a wet, snowy sidewalk in Montreal to pay tribute to the late baseball hero Jackie Robinson. The onlookers are huddled around the home where Robinson lived in the summer of 1946 as he prepared to break baseball’s colour barrier. The U.S. government is there to pay tribute to the civil-rights figure by placing a plaque at the home, located in Montreal’s Plateau district. The event is being timed to coincide with Black History Month. *** VANCOUVER - The head of the Canadian Olympic Committee says one of the best legacies of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games is the confidence Canadian athletes gained in themselves.
COC president Marcel Aubut says Canadian athletes learned how to win during the Vancouver Games. This will help Canadian teams at the 2012 Summer Games in London and at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Canada won 26 medals during the 2010 Games, including 14 gold. That’s the most gold by any country at a Winter Games. *** NAGPUR, India - Zimbabwe bowled out Canada for 123 on Monday to comfortably win their World Cup Group A match by 175 runs and land a dispiriting blow on its lowly opponent. With his side defending a healthy 298-9, Zimbabwe spinner Ray Price opened the bowling and took three wickets in the first six overs to reduce the ICC Associate nation to 7-3. That was too weak a position even on a good
wicket at Nagpur’s VCA Stadium and Zimbabwe secured victory with 7.5 overs remaining. Price finished with 3-16, with fellow spinner Graeme Cremer taking 3-31. Zimbabwe takes on out-of-form New Zealand next with a quarterfinal berth now a possibility. INTERNATIONAL NEW YORK, N.Y. Deadlines no longer are in the distance for the NFL and the players’ union. The collective bargaining agreement expires Thursday night, and the owners could lock out the players. Even before that, though, the Players Association is likely to decertify to prevent a lockout and take its chances in court. Both sides will resume meeting with a federal mediator Tuesday and probably Wednesday; seven recent sessions brought
little progress. Just ahead stands the unthinkable: a labour shutdown in America’s most prosperous and popular sport. *** BOGOTA - Panama defender Luis Moreno is facing sanctions after he kicked an injured owl that had landed on the field during a match for his Colombian club Deportivo Pereira against Atletico Junior. The owl, which serves as a mascot for the Atletico Junior team and lives in the stadium, was being treated Monday at a local veteri-
nary clinic in Barranquilla. The bird was expected to recover and had only a minor fracture to its right leg. *** MOSCOW - When the organizers of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics chose three mascots for the games, they might have thought the unusual decision would satisfy almost everyone. But on Monday, it looked like they may have pleased almost no one. President Dmitry Medvedev is questioning whether the voting really reflected the people’s will. The creator of Misha the

bear, the mascot of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, says one of the Sochi mascots is a rip-off of his design. And firebrand politician Vladimir Zhrinovsky says all three are an insult to Russia. The mascots — a snow leopard, a polar bear and a rabbit — were chosen in a nationwide television broadcast Saturday in which viewers voted by telephone and text message from among nine candidates. The head of the Sochi organizing committee says there won’t be a recount.

Safe in the Storm Food safety during power outages is extremely important. With more possible storms approaching, are you ready to handle a power outage? To help you keep your food supply safe during a power outage, the following procedures and guidelines are recommended: Chest freezer Without power, a full upright or chest freezer will keep everything frozen for about two days. A half-full freezer will keep food frozen one day. If you expect the power will be coming back on fairly soon, you can keep food frozen longer by not opening the door. Keep a thermometer in all your freezers and refrigerators to check the temperature once the power is back on. Refrigerator-freezer combination Without power, the refrigerator section will keep food cool 4-6 hours depending on the kitchen temperature and how often you open the refrigerator door. A full, well-functioning freezer unit should keep food frozen for two days. A half-full freezer unit should keep things frozen about one day. Block ice can keep food on refrigerator shelves cooler. Dry ice can be added to the freezer unit. You should be aware, however, that you cannot touch dry ice and you should not breathe the
Thawed food Food still containing ice crystals or that is at refrigerator temperature can be refrozen. Discard any thawed food that has risen to room temperature and remained there for two hours or more. Remember: When in doubt, throw it out! Should you have large quantities of thawed out meat and vegetables to prepare, or if you just need a hearty stew for a stormy day, this versatile Stormy Day Stew recipe is the perfect remedy! You can use the ingredients listed or substitute your favorite meat or vegetables to create your own stew recipe. STORMY DAY STEW This stew was designed to incorporate the meat or vegetables you have on hand and to add to or delete the ingredients listed as desired. You also can use a can of creamy soup, other types of fresh, canned or frozen vegetables, or add in or serve the stew over cooked rice or pasta, if

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: How does someone with AIDS die? How long does one live after being diagnosed with AIDS? Can a person with AIDS cook for his or her family without fear of giving the virus to loved ones? -- D.R.
Hepatitis C Can Lead to Liver Cirrhosis DEAR DR. DONOHUE: When he was 20, my son came down with hepatitis C. He’s never said how he got it, but he was running around with a very wild bunch then. He still has the virus at age 27. Should he be treated? He never was. I wonder what’s in store for him, and if he can marry and have a family. Can he? -- C.S. ANSWER: Worldwide, 175 million people are infected with the hepatitis C virus. In the U.S., 4 million carry it. Between 70 percent and 80 percent of infected people will harbor the virus for life. Of that number, around 20 percent develop liver cirrhosis in 20 years, and a smaller number are stricken with liver cancer. Hepatitis C is the most common reason for a liver transplant. People catch the virus in a number of ways. Sharing needles to inject drugs is one way. Health-care workers can get it from an accidental stick with a needle used on an infected person. Before 1992, blood transfusion was a major source of infection. Tattooing or body piercing by unlicensed practitioners or those who do not adhere to sterile techniques is another route of transmission. Sex with multiple partners is a possible way of contracting the illness. Sex with a single partner who has the virus is not a common route of passage. Your son can marry and possibly but not likely infect his wife, and will not infect his children. This young man has to establish himself with a doctor. Lab tests will show if his liver is suffering any damage, and blood tests give a reliable estimate of how great a number of viruses is circulating in his blood. Treatment will hinge on that information. A liver biopsy might be necessary. Some doctors feel all who show evidence of current infection ought to undergo treatment. He should completely abstain from alcohol.
Drinking puts his liver in further jeopardy. The booklet on hepatitis A, B and C explains these common infections in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 503W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. ***
ANSWER: AIDS kills in a number of ways. It so weakens the immune system that an infection brings death. Or the weakened immune system allows the growth of a cancer that proves fatal. AIDS also can interfere with the production of proteins and other body materials needed for life, and the person wastes away. The incredible progress made in the treatment of AIDS allows most infected people to live 30 to 40 years after the diagnosis is made, very close to a normal life span. This is possible in countries where people have ready access to the many AIDS medicines. People with AIDS can cook for their family with-
out any fear of transmitting the virus. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he
