Brent Batten
Brent Batten just moved to Estevan three weeks ago from B.C. He is the new operations and marketing manager for the Bruins and said his main concern is increasing the team’s exposure. Batten said coming to Estevan is kind of like coming home and he couldn’t be happier to work with such a proud community. Q. What influenced your decision to come to Estevan? A. I think it’s the opportunity to work with the Bruins. It’s a very tradition rich team and they had a lot of exciting things happen this year and just the chance to be part of an historical yearbook really; it’s an opportunity I couldn’t really pass up. Q. How old are you? A. I am 28. Q. How did you hear about the job? A. A good buddy of mine that I’ve known for about 15 years is the assistant coach here, Chad Leslie, and his older brother is actually a scout here, so it was through
conversation with them I kind of learned about the opportunity. Q.Why did you take the job? A. It’s like coming home for me. I’m originally from Brandon, Manitoba and my wife’s family is originally from Moose Jaw. It was kind of a central place for us both and it was kind of nice to back in the Prairies. Q. What is your favourite part of the job? A. Probably interacting with the community, I mean it’s a town that’s very passionate about their hockey, so it’s been great dealing with everybody in town and everybody’s been very welcoming and very receptive. Q. What is your favourite pasttime outside of work? A. I have a three-year old daughter that keeps my wife and I pretty busy so basically anything that we do with her. Q. What do you think of Estevan so far? A. It’s a great community, like I said it’s a very passionate community.
Money Problems? We’ll help you make a fresh start. FREE Consultation 525-DEBT (3328) 1-800-961-DEBT (3328) Q. What are your responsibilities? A. Basically overseeing the business side of the hockey team, so anything that’s away from the actual club on the ice generally falls under my responsibility; dealing with sponsors, dealing with the general public in terms of inquiries and essentially anything that’s not hockey related. Q. What do you think you bring to the table? job
A. I think I have a lot of experience in this area, obviously I came from a hockey organization in B.C. so this is not new ground for me and I can build off that. I’m very familiar with the league having played in a Saskatchewan Junior League

Our Past
May 26, 1960
Rose Ditaranto Estevan Mercury Reporter
Here it is, yes, a rant, by me. There have been a few things brought to my attention throughout the duration of the one month I have been in Estevan but one thing really boils my blood. The roads, yes the roads, especially Highway 18 into Torquay. I would like to ask those of you who venture out to place the orange cautionary signs alongside every crater and pothole, why you have yet to fill those gaps? If you waste enough time to put up these signs, why not fix the problem all together? The amount of negligence towards driving conditions here is a bit unsettling. There are roads left unpaved and terribly bumpy, which does not serve wonders for my poor car. I’ll tell you one thing, if you want to make the city more attractive and a place people choose to live, then pave your roads and fill the potholes, some of which have now converted to craters because of the wear and tear of semis. It’s this constant disregard for driver safety that makes me wonder what else the City has deemed unimportant to fix. My challenge to the City is to take charge and take action in making Estevan the beautiful city it has the potential to be and it all starts with paying attention to road conditions and making this city driver friendly. Speaking of driver friendly, another issue is the sidewalks, do they just not exist here? I went to drop off my car for repairs last week and decided that since it was such a beautiful day, I would walk back to the office; big mistake that was. First off, I found the city not to be pedestrian friendly especially for a woman in heels, like me. As I was rounding a corner a block away from my work, I was severely surprised to find a pit bull snarl and jump at me; I swear I have never run that fast in heels in my life. I was shaken up to say the very leastandwhentheownercameoutside, hebegantoyellatmetellingme his walkway, which was not fenced in, was not a sidewalk. I exclaimed that I wasn’t from here and frustrated with the events that took place, I began to rant and rave about how there are no sidewalks in this city and the ones that do exist run out halfway or turn into gravel. So my experiences have been rather misfortunate, of course not as terrible as they could have been, but still pretty bad when it comes to the roads and sidewalks in the city.
The Trader takes you back to the year 1960, when Northern Saskatchewan was receiving praise for being the best vacation destination for summer. Present day, the southeast corner of the province has revamped its resources, and can now proudly proclaim it has become a hot spot for summer tourism. Each week the Southeast Trader Express tells us what has happened recently, but we'll also give you a look in to the distant past. The reasoning seems sound in as much as the government is likely to keep those acres strictly for wildlife more so than private landowners who might be inclined to change what they do with the land based on changing economic factors. So, it was not surprising a decision by the Saskatchewan government to introduce legislation that could see Crown land taken out of wildlife As our world becomes more ecologically conscious, there is heightened protection and sold to farmers, was met by a level of concern, and for some awareness about protecting habitat. of outrage. We are increasingly recognizing that we cannot continue the expansion The decision by the Brad Wall government is an interesting one. California teen says he wasn't ready for a baby PROVINCIAL The Canadian National Institute for the Blind held their Shades of Fun event on Thursday, where residents across the province were asked to sport funny and whacky eyewear. The event was held in hopes of raising awareness of the damage UV rays can cause to people’s eyes and help raise money for the vital services they provide the visually impaired. For Saskatchewan, the minister of health designated the month of May as Vision Health Month and Thursday as Shades of Fun Day. Long-term exposure to UV rays can increase the risk of developing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. ••• Established on May 23, 1873 by the Canadian Parliament, the RCMP celebrated the birthday of the force last Sunday. Hundreds came together at the RCMP Heritage Centre to celebrate the event as well as Heritage Centre’s third birthday Balloon art, an inflatable obstacle course, face painting, crafts and cake were featured at the event. NATIONAL Former Ontario attorney general, Michael Bryant had charges of criminal negli-
gence causing death and dangerous driving dropped earlier this week due to there being no reasonable prospect for conviction. Bryant was charged in association with the death of Toronto bike courier, Darcy Allan Sheppard who was only 33. Police said Sheppard died after grabbing hold of a car in downtown Toronto following an altercation with the driver. Sheppard had fallen under the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. ••• Quebec police say, Denis Philippon, 39, a man deeply hurt by a breakup, may have deliberately used his car as a weapon of death in four separate accidents. The wrecks left four people dead including, Philippon and his fouryear-old son, who he had proclaimed his love for just a few weeks before. The crashes happened 10 minutes apart near Plessisville, southeast of Montreal. Police said witnesses saw Philippon’s van driving recklessly early that afternoon. The van first collided with a small car, killing St-Joseph-du-Lac brothers Sebastian Fleury, 25, and 14-year-old Alexandre. After the initial collision, the driver of the van stole his ex-wife’s pickup
truck and slammed into another truck moments later, leaving Philippon and his son, Thomas, dead. ••• A report released by RBC Economics Research says owning a home in Canada has become more expensive unless you live in Alberta. The report that was released on Tuesday, states that the cost of home ownership in Canada rose for the third straight quarter across all housing segments in the first quarter of 2010. Jacked up housing prices and a strong real estate market are to blame for putting strain on the bank accounts of Canadians. With Alberta as the exception, measures of home affordability have deteriorated across all provinces. A significant decline in affordability is shown in B.C., Saskatchewan and Manitoba. ••• Leading HIV-AIDS researchers say it is time to shed the discriminatory policy, which bars all gay men from donating blood. Researchers argued in this week’s Medical Association Journal that gay men in long-term, monogamous relationships should be allowed to donate their blood. Dr. Mark Wainberg, leading author, said they are not arguing the fact that promiscuous gay men should
be able to give blood. However, Dr.Wainberg said the Canadian Blood Services and Hema-Quebec should adopt the policies that allow gay men to donate after waiting one to five years after taking on a new partner. Dr. Wainberg said the current policy discriminates against the gay community.

Melchert-Dinkel is working as a long-haul trucker since losing his nursing licence and is barred from leaving the state, except for work related purposes. ••• Sandy Herold, the Connecticut woman whose chimpanzee viciously mutilated and blinded her best friend last year, passed away Monday night. Herold suffered from a ruptured aortic aneurysm, her lawyer told the press. Herold’s former 200pound chimpanzee attacked her friend back in February of
2009 after Herold had asked Nash to aid in luring the chimp back into the house. The primate tore off Nash’s hands, nose, lips and eyelids before it was shot dead by police. ••• A California teen has been charged with murdering his three month pregnant girlfriend as police continue to search a landfill for her body. Eighteen-year-old Jesus Avitia Jr. was charged by the San Bernardino County district attorney’s office on Monday for the death of 17-year-old Anyssia Escamilla. Nazareth set to rock Orpheum stage July 8 By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury Scottish rock sensation, Nazareth, is set to perform at an already sold-out show in Estevan, July 8 at the Orpheum Theatre. The band was created back in 1968 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, out of the ruins of the former, semiprofessional and local group, the Shadettes, which formed in 1961 by bass guitar player, Pete Agnew, who still remains with the band today. Other bandmates include Dan McCafferty on lead vocals, a bandmate since the beginning, Jimmy Murrison on lead guitar, a bandmate since December of 1994,
and Lee Agnew on drums, a bandmate since late summer of 1999. Each mate says they could not be happier doing what they love while making a living off of it and love touring the world. Nazareth got their name from the first line of their classic song, The Weight.
The band released their debut album in 1971 after their movie to London. However, they did not receive much recognition until the release of their second album, Exercises, in 1972 and it wasn’t until their 1975 album, Hair of the Dog, that they gained international recognition. The band’s first international hit single was the cover of the ballad, Love Hurts and they continue to record and tour until this very day. For the month of June, Nazareth will be touring Europe and then Canada in July.

THE TRADER, FRIDAY, MAY 28 , 2010
Q: I just saw “Iron Man 2” this weekend, and I wondered about one of the actresses in the movie. In the party scene with Robert Downey Jr., there is a blond actress who looks a lot like Irina from “Desperate Housewives.” Are they one in the same? -- Tess G., via e-mail A: That’s a very good eye you have there, as the actress who played Rebecca in “Iron Man 2” is indeed the same person who plays Irina: Helena Mattsson. The 26-year-old beauty from Stockholm, Sweden, is indeed wreaking havoc on poor Lynette portraying her son’s gold-digging fiancée. When I caught up w i t h H e l e n a r e c e n t l y, she told me what a joy it is to play the Russian temptress: “It is so much fun to be the villain and to be manipulative. There are so many off-tones, so many layers that only the women understand among themselves. You can always read between the lines. It is also a lot of fun to play a character who’s really far from who you are yourself, and really have fun with that and be the villain.” *** Q: Did actress Amy Adams have her baby yet? I remember reading a while back that she was pregnant. -- Gina H., Carson City, Nev. A : A m y, 3 5 , a n d fiance Darren Le Gallo, welcomed a 7-pound baby girl on May 15. The “Julie and Julia” star named her daughter Aviana Olea Le Gallo. Amy and Darren have been together for seven years and engaged since July 2008. *** Q: Will Starz’s new show “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” be back for a second season? Also, I had heard that the show’s star, Andy Whitfield, has cancer. Is he going to be OK? -- Paul F., Mansfield, Ohio A: It was recently announced that “Spartacus” will return in January 2011 as a sixpart prequel series that will once again star John Hannah and Lucy Lawless, with brief appearances by Andy Whitfield. The
series has been renewed for a full second-season o r d e r, b u t p r o d u c t i o n has been delayed while Andy is treated for nonHodgkin lymphoma. Co-star Katrina Law told me that Andy is responding well to treatment, and that “he has felt the millions of prayers that are coming toward him, and it really is an inspiration for him. Keep sending them, because he really appreciates it.” *** Q: I can’t believe that “FlashForward” wasn’t renewed for the 2010-11 season. What are they
thinking over there at ABC? -- Suzzi F., via e-mail A: “FlashForward” did start out a little shaky, but when it came back after its hiatus, it had really pulled its act together and was cohesive, exciting, wellacted and thoughtful. I am sad we won’t get closure on a lot of those open story lines, as I was looking forward to seeing what the future of the show would bring. Hopefully a cable station like TNT, SyFy or FX will decide to pick up the show for next season.

Tourism in southeast corner has something to offer everyone at any age By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury

With more to offer than what meets the eye, southeast Saskatchewan should be added to anyone’s list of top Summer destinations. From the Estevan Motor Speedway, to the Craven Country Jamboree, there will never be a dull moment for those waiting to take a tour of the bottom right corner of the province. “The southeast has something for everyone, whether you enjoy camping, shopping, golfing, historic sites, walking trails; you will find something to be passionate about,” said Whitney Bacon, marketing director for Southeast Tourism. Estevan alone has enough attractions to keep any tourist occupied, said Michel Cyrenne, community development manager for Estevan and District Board of Tourism, Trade and Commerce. “Specific attractions would have to be the mine and power plant tours, the Souris Valley Theatre, the Estevan Motor Speedway, drag strip and motocross
track, and definitely our recreational facilities; things like the golf course, Boundary Dam being stuffed with large-mouth bass, the aquatic centre and all our other facilities,” he said. Kevin D’Souza, tourism and marketing co-ordinator for the Estevan Tourism Booth, said the city of Estevan is rich in its natural resources and that draws the attention of those wishing to visit. “I would say for Estevan one of our biggest selling points is the fact that we are the Energy City, so then we have free energy tours to Boundary Dam and the Shand Power Station as well, so it’s kind of an educational tour. In addition, we have two museums in town and an art gallery so basically there is something for everyone,” said D’Souza. However, this corner of Saskatchewan proves to be more of a hit with tourism in the summer months rather than the winter, said D’Souza. Bacon said the reasoning for this is due to tourists wanting to go to warm and sunny destinations, especial-
ly during the cold season. “The busiest time would be during the spring and summer months when the weather is nicest. During the fall and winter months, it is less busy due to the fact that people like to go on warm vacations and there isn’t as much to offer for tourists during these months,” she said. Cyrenne said that although there is very little to do when the snow hits Estevan, people mustn’t forget about local legend, the Bruins, which prove to be one of the city’s selling points to tourists visiting in the off-season. Don’t let weather conditions fool you, people are visiting Estevan and surrounding area all year round with peaks in the warmer months, because the majority of tourists are family and friends of residents in the area, added Cyrenne. “Really the greatest proportion of our tourist market are those visiting friends and family so for the most part, there are people coming year round,” he said. Tourism in the southeast has improved over the

decades because residents in the communities have somewhat realized the importance of tourism and as a result, have been promoting their businesses and events more thoroughly than in the past, especially with the increase in the use of the Internet. “I think it’s become more of a focus for the community in the past few years. I think at one point in time, tourism was considered to be a nonessential part of the economy. I think that changed a lot,” said Cyrenne. D’Souza said the first step in attracting tourists to Estevan and the southeast starts whith residents familiarizing themselves with their own community. “From my standpoint of view, I think it’s creating capacity, raising awareness within the community,” he said. Bacon agrees, improving tourism in Saskatchewan begins with getting the people who live in the province to educate themselves on what Saskatchewan has to offer. Cyrenne said Estevan will be beginning a new and exciting incentive for residents to get out there and
see what their community is all about. “This year we actually started a new program that will be based on a staycation theme, basically where we will be encouraging people to experience local events and attractions,” he said. Each person who participates in the theme will receive a passport that will be stamped as they appear at events around town and will be entered in a draw at the end of the year. For a push in the right direction, here are some sites to see outside of Estevan: • Cannington Manor Provincial Historic Park – British settlers homesteaded this area with visions of a Victorian society, complete with fox hunts, poetry clubs and cricket. The way of life flourished briefly, but by 1900 the village was abandoned. Today, visitors experience the partially restored village’s six reconstructed buildings, visitor centre and the All Saints Anglican Church, circa 1882 – 1900. • Craven Country Jamboree – the people are friendly, the atmosphere is charged and the music is
legendary at this, Canada’s longest running multi-day music festival. Set in the beautiful Qu’Appelle Valley, the jamboree features today’s hottest acts and country legends. Don’t miss the pro-bull riding demonstrations, Songwriter’s Circle and cowboy church service. There is also fabulous food and merchandise vendors in a quaint old-west area. • Moose Mountain Provincial Park – one of Saskatchewan’s first provincial parks. Poplar and birch trees and a hilly topography provide ideal conditions for camping, hiking, swimming, boating, golf, tennis and daily programs for park visitors. • Motherwell Homestead National Historic Site of Canada – this living history experience is centered around the beautifully-maintained home and ground of W.R. Motherwell – circa 1912. Costumed guides give you a glimpse of this notable pioneer farmer and politician as well as his impact on early western Canada. See the home, barn, farm equipment and animals as they were in the homestead’s heyday.

‘It’s the adrenaline rush behind barrel racing that gets 16-year-old Sarah pumped up for the big day’ By Rose Ditaranto of The Mercury
RACING ACTION
With the wind in her hair and dust at her feet, she strides confidently around the track starting off with a slow walk, turning into a trot, and eventually a gallop. Sarah Yoner’s horse, Chance, is the wind beneath her wings; she lifts her spirits and gives Yoner her dose of adrenaline. It’s not like any other day. Today Yoner barrel races and she can hardly contain her excitement as she jumps out of bed, slips into her blue jeans and cowboy boots and saddles up Chance to get ready for the big day. “I’m pumped like, even though I’ve done this like a million times, every time you go into that gate and you know you’re going to run, you get this rush; it’s awesome,” said Yoner. Prior to race day, Yoner prepares Chance for the event to come through practise and tender love and care. “I ride my horse everyday and you have to practice with barrels and just get her warmed up and in shape. “Before the race you got to warm them up because you can’t just get on them and run, you got to warm them up so their
For 16-year-old Sarah Yoner racing exhilarates each one of her senses as she closes her eyes and let’s her horse, Chance, guide her into oblivion. muscles are good and then after the race they are usually really hot and they want to run some more, so you really got to walk them off and cool them down.” Although the thrill is what motivates 16-yearold Yoner to get out on the track, she does admit the sport can be dangerous if your horse senses your mistrust. “If you don’t have trust in your horse they can feel that, if you’re nervous they can feel that through the saddle, your jeans and your boots, so you have to trust that horse with your life. “Honestly, I just blank out, like it’s such a rush I just blank out and I just let
my horse do her thing and just hold on and ride her.” Yoner’s interest in barrel racing was sparked after enrolling at ECS. “Well when I went to the Comp, there was the rodeo club and I ride horses, I’ve rode horses all my life I just never barrel raced or rodeoed so when I got to the Comp I just got into the rodeo club,” she said. Yoner said she thinks it is beneficial for her or anyone who begins riding at her age or even younger. “You’re more experienced when you’re older and you know how to train your horse to do barrels. “I think there are 40 people in the youth in this
race, and there’s 175 in the open.” Although horses can be hard to train, Yoner said she would not trade the experience with anything else in the world; barrel racing is a passion this young woman will continue to indulge in, year after year with no intention of quitting.

UFC moves forward by opening permanent home in Toronto PROVINCIAL Roughriders are on the lookout for two new defensive ends to replace Stevie Baggs and John Chick. The former Riders signed respectively with the NFL’sArizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts during the off-season.The team will suffer a loss as Baggs was named a West Division all-star last season after he tied for the CFL lead with 12 sacks and added 55 defensive tackles, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and an interception. As for Chick, he was crowned the division allstar and was voted the league’s most outstanding defensive player. Roughriders defensive co-ordinator, Gary Etcheverry, said nobody has the edge and it will be a “full-blown competition to find guys to play those positions.” NATIONAL For Ultimate Fighting Championship president, Dana White, the goal was to take the sportofmixedmartialartsglobal. Hiscompanyhasmovedonestep closer to their dream, opening an international office in Canada. White announced that the Las Vegas-based company is going to be creating a permanent home inToronto withTomWright, former Canadian Football League commissioner, as the UFC’s director of Canadian operations. White said it is important to them that an office will open up in Canada which he calls the
“mecca” for the UFC. ••• TorontoRaptorsown,Chris Bosh says he has narrowed his list of preferred teams to play on to five. Bosh ,who’s considered in the same category as LeBron James and Dwayne Wade as the NBA’s top free agents this summer, listed the Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami
Heat, New York Knicks and the Raptors as the teams with which he would like to continue his career. The Raptors were given a list of preferred teams in the event that the team works out a sign-and-trade deal involving Bosh. Jerseys worn by the Canadian men’s hockey team in their quest for gold at the Vancouver
2010 Olympics just raked in a huge donation for the Hockey for Haiti relief initiative.Twentythree jerseys were auctioned off on eBay for one week by the NationalHockeyLeaguePlayers Association and rang in a total of US$94,000, which included Sidney Crosby’s No.87 that raised $37,100. INTERNATIONAL
The Los Angeles Dodgers have reported that Jose Lima, a 20-game winner, died unexpectedly last Sunday at only 37. Lima, who earned all-star honours in a 13-year Major League Baseball pitching career, passed away from a heart attack. Frank McCourt, Dodgers owner, said Lima could light
up the room and that’s exactly what he did. Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns underwent minor surgery earlier this week for a broken nose. The incident took place in the fourth quarter of the Suns’ win over the LA Lakers in last Sunday’s Game 3 of theWestern Conference Finals.
