My name is Butch, and I am a male Collie Cross. My fur is light cream with some gold patches; I am also around a year old and am willing to learn new tricks. I am always pretty happy, and I love going for walks. Do you need a walking friend? I am your dog!

My name is Jenny and I am a black Lab cross. I am a spayed female with all my vaccinations. I am still young so I would be willing to learn all kinds of new things.

I am a Papillon/American Eskimo/Jack Russell and I am male, only about 5-6 months old. I am tri-colour, white with brown and black markings. I am a cutie but I need consistent training to be a good little fella, but I am very lovable.

Once again our Cat Farm Program is under way, for more information phone down to the shelter. We could use donations of cat food, litter and dog food. We still have a few kittens left, they are all so cute! Check out the animals in our care at:

One-on-one with Jordan Baker Gerald Gane is the new general manager at the Southern Plains Cooperative Limited. He has been here for four months after coming from Manitoba. Were you at a Co-op before coming to Estevan? Oh yeah. I’m coming up on nearly 27 years of experience. I grew up in Central Butte, Saskatchewan. I started at the Co-op there, and I was there for a number of years. (I) moved on to my first general manager’s placement in Southey, with the Southey Co-op. From there I went to the Federated Co-op. I worked as a retail adviser there for five years in Regina. Then I went to the Valley View Co-op in Virden, Manitoba; I was there for five years. And then the Southern Plains Co-op. How did you start working at Co-ops? I started when I was in high school. I was working part time at a variety of positions, and from there I moved into full-time employment. I worked in many different areas coming up through the management sector and as a branch manager and then on to the general manager. (I was a) department manager prior to that as well.

Do you have an education background, or did you just learn the trade as you went on? No post-secondary education. I’ve taken numerous courses since being involved, but no formal post-secondary education getting into the field. I guess you could say I worked my way up the system. Coming into a new Coop, what sort of differences do you see? Well, every retail’s makeup is different, and their strengths and weaknesses, and the different commodities they sell and services that are provided in each one can vary from one to the next. Each one poses its own challenges and every one is fun. What is the importance, do you feel, of having co-operatives in the community? It’s the best business model that’s out there in the fact that it’s owned by the members that it serves, and it provides goods and services. At the end of the year, after everything has been tallied from a financial perspective, we return earnings to the members. There aren’t that many businesses out there that will return money back to their customers on a yearly basis. When you go back over the number of years ... I reported at the annual meeting last week that over the existence of the Southern Plains Co-op, which was incorporated in 1946, sales throughout those years were nearly $848 million in sales. Of that we returned $11.39 million back to the members throughout that time frame

in our community. So we’ve put a lot of money back into the community and to the people who have supported us. Are there any differences in the way this Co-op operates compared to other ones you’ve been at? Each one is somewhat unique, but they’re all virtually the same. The way that they’re structured; we refer to the co-operative retailing system, or CRS, and we all typically follow the same format as far as how we’re structured. Each one has its own intricacies as to how it will be specifically dealt with in certain areas. For the most part, we’re all very much the same. Do you feel an obligation to answer to your customers, as they are members of your company? We are here for our customers. There is no doubt. This business is built on serving our customers and providing the best goods and services to them. It’s all people-oriented. How easy is it to explore an avenue? There is a lot of talk about local food and organic food. Is that something you can say that, as a Co-operative you are going to pursue? I think that we have to look at every avenue year in and year out. Are we going to do something different this year that we didn’t do last year? Probably. But that’s no different than the year before. I may have a total different perspective on things going forward. I don’t see any glaring changes that I’m going to jump out and make

wholesale changes by any stretch of the imagination. Our intent is that we will make changes to improve the betterment of our members, our customers and the betterment of the whole retail itself. It’s a global issue, but food prices obviously are rising. Is that something that impacts you guys, or has it impacted you so far? It will impact everybody. The fact is that those costs at any level get passed along, and it eventually affects the end user. We’re no different than anyone else who’s in that chain, from the growers right on up. As the costs increase to produce a product, it gets passed along at each level through there, because everybody’s costs rise along with it. It’s not something that we like to see, but it’s a reality of where we’re at. I don’t know that that’s changed a lot over the years. It’s maybe escalated a little bit in the last year or two, but we’ve always seen increases and decreases, and I might as well point out that there are decreases lots of times. Decreases don’t always get acted upon and people don’t bring attention to it because it’s a decrease, but there are a lot of times when decreases (in the costs) happen and they get passed along (to the consumer) as a decrease. And is a Co-op set up any differently to better handle increases in price? No, I think all companies are impacted. I think we try to be as efficient as we possibly can, to minimize that impact, but everyone has to, in any sector whether

Perspective Expressed Opinions Jordan Baker Estevan Mercury Reporter

Celebrating death is a little uncomfortable The Twitter accounts of athletes are read religiously by sports media. They don’t need to get an actual quote from athletes anymore because Twitter does that for them. During many intermissions of the Stanley Cup playoffs the TSN panel quotes some hockey players’ latest tweet on the game. That’s OK, they’re smart enough to tweet what they know. Rashard Mendenhall, a running back for the Super-Bowl-losing Pittsburgh Steelers, decided to tweet outside of the world of sports. That’s fine, and he’s entitled to his opinion, but what he said has stirred the pot more than predicting an overtime goal scorer. He decided to comment on the death of Osama bin Laden. He started out innocent enough: “What kind of person celebrates death? It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never heard speak. We’ve only heard one side ...” And now I have sunk to the low level of quoting a Twitter feed. In some ways I agree with him. Who does celebrate death? When I first heard bin Laden had been killed, I felt no urge to rejoice or even crack a smile. It just doesn’t feel right for me. I certainly won’t mourn a man who orchestrated the murder of thousands of innocent people from all over the world, but something just feels wrong about celebrating such an event. It is great news that bin Laden was finally, ultimately held accountable for his actions, but the killing of a person is a tough thing for me to actually feel good about. It may be a good thing that he was killed, but I can’t bring myself to actually relish the fact that someone was shot in the head. I don’t know exactly what Mendenhall meant, but I’m not sure

Farming isn’t what it used to be

Page 4

I need to hear bin Laden’s side of the story. I’ve heard enough from the various videos he’s released to understand he was going about getting what he wanted in absolutely horrible ways. He was a bad guy. You don’t ask murderers if they had a good reason, and I think when he took credit for the Sept. 11 attacks, that was an admission of guilt. Mendenhall went further by suggesting bin Laden’s hand in the attacks was limited, in reference to some conspiracy theories surrounding the events. That’s also where I must distance my agreement with him. Conspiracy theories are maybe more interesting to believe and are even fun to think about, but bin Laden ran al-Qaida. He was the mastermind behind not just the 9/11 attacks but probably many other attacks. It’s at least fun to see the Steelers owner squirm under the comments of one of his players, making the obligatory “support the troops” stance, even though I don’t recall Mendenhall reprimanding troops of any country for the work they do. It is perhaps a milestone in an unending fight against terrorism, but Osama bin Laden is, to me, an insignificant part of the affair. If his death meant the end of terrorism forever, I would see cause for celebration. That is obviously not the case. When I see celebrations, I really just feel a little sad that that is the mob reaction to someone’s death, however evil that person may have been. As a group, I guess I just think we’re better than that, and I hate it when I’m proven wrong.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, MAY 6, 2011

Changing the world with children’s books With nearly 30 authors touring around Canada for Children’s Book Week, Estevan youth were lucky enough to hear the stories of Celia Barker Lottridge. Lottridge made a number of stops in Estevan schools on May 3, including an appearance at the library, where she told stories and answered the questions of Hillcrest School students from Grades 3 to 5. Lottridge said after her presentation with the students that she became a librarian before writing, in large part because she loves to tell stories. “For some reason I love telling stories,” she said. “It kind of comes naturally for me.” She is quick to distinguish between telling stories and reading page-to-page to children. Having a book in front of her acts as a barrier, she said. “It’s easier for me to talk to children without a book in front of me because it’s kind of a thing that’s in between, so I hardly ever read (to an audience).” She said because her audience is children, sharing stories is what they really care about. The story she shared with the children at the close of the session was The Name of the Tree, a story she’s shared hundreds, perhaps thousands of times. She told it four times on Tuesday. With folk tales like that, she said stories don’t need to be memorized and each telling can have it’s own life because the storyteller is part of the process. The choice to write children’s books, as opposed to other tales, was a decision she made, but doesn’t really know why. “Well I know some reasons. Children’s stories, you have to be economical. You can’t write long paragraphs about what somebody thinks. I think I like that quality. I like that you have to make the story tell what it is you want to tell. You don’t write about the hardships of pioneers, you just write about some pioneers in the bush. The other reason is I like the way children read. If they like a book, they kind of take it into themselves in a way a lot of adult readers don’t.” There is one theme in particular that she often includes in her books, whether by conscious choice or not. The idea of having to travel by necessity is something that is at the centre of many of her stories. “I very often, in my books, somebody has to move from one pace to another. And their children so they’re not making the decision. I think that happened enough in my life that I can

On some level you always are putting yourself into other people.” Lottridge is touring the province as part of Book Week, with a theme this year of Changing the World, One Child at a Time. She said she hopes for children, reading a book can take them out of themselves and help them identify with other people. “It also just gives you information in a way that’s much more absorbable. You can take it in. With children’s books—no child is going to sit down and read a history of the First World War in Iran—but this book actually tells you a little bit about that, as it was experienced by real people. I think books expand people’s lives.” As Lottridge is a children’s writer, much of her

identify with that.” Lottridge’s family moved a lot while she was growing, rarely staying in one place for more than a few years. With all that travel comes the experience of a new environment, and she considers herself a “magpie” because of such a life, getting a little experience here and there. She noted one book she had written about children getting displaced in Iran in the First World War, Home is Beyond the Mountains, but said it couldn’t be more different than one she’d written about a girl who has to go to Toronto from Saskatchewan. “Usually that type of theme isn’t even something you’re aware of until you’ve written the book. It’s absolutely true that you write about yourself, because who

concern can lean toward to the issues of bullying. “I was thinking about this in terms of bullying,” she said. “Bullies, I think,

are people who really don’t empathize with (the victim). They understand how they feel. They see the results, the other kid crying or unhappy, and they feel powerful. But they, themselves, can’t really feel what it’s like. I think reading books can help you because a book is not saying you have to do this. But if you relate to a character it expands your own perception into another person.” She recalls one boy who wrote her a letter in response to one of her stories, Ticket to Curlew, where the character had to move to Alberta. The boy in the letter said he had just moved and told her he knew exactly how the character in the book felt. “It certainly dawned on me, ‘That’s why I write about it.’ But I think for him, it made him understand himself better. That this other person in the book felt this way, it kind of helped him

know this is the way people feel in this situation.” She said there are many ways to open up a child’s world and noted some people write about how it feels to be a child soldier. She thinks a subject like that is for older children than who she writes for. “What I tried to do (in Home is Beyond the Mountains) is really stick with what it was like for this nine-year-old, not talk a bout how terrible it was, not objectify the enemy. Just, this was her experience.” Lottridge said for her audience there needs to be some amount of hope in the end, even if the story is tragic. “You have to end children’s books with something that’s hopeful,” she said. “They can deal with tragedy, but they need to have somebody in the book who carries on.”

CFL on board promoting concussion awareness NATIONAL TORONTO - The Canadian Football League is teaming up with Football Canada and other organizations to promote concussion awareness, prevention, management and research. CFL commissioner Mark Cohon unveiled the new campaign today at a news conference at a Toronto hotel. The campaign’s goal is to distribute flyers and posters with concussion information to the tens of thousands of football players around the country. The material spells out how to recognize the symptoms of a concussion and stresses the importance of not prematurely rushing an athlete back into action. *** TORONTO - Canadian soccer coach Stephen Hart says he plans to speak to Dwayne De Rosario in the wake of comments by his club coach that he may skip the Gold Cup. Red Bulls coach Hans Backe says his understanding is De Rosario has turned down the national team invite. Hart says that’s news to

him and he will follow up with the veteran attacking midfielder. INTERNATIONAL BARCELONA, Spain - Barcelona reached the Champions League final after drawing 1-1 against Real Madrid on Tuesday to take the bad-tempered semifinal between Spain’s bitter rivals 3-1 overall. Andres Iniesta returned from injury to thread a perfect through ball to Pedro Rodriguez for the 54th minute opener before Angel Di Maria found Marcelo with a short pass for Madrid’s equalizer 10 minutes later. *** ZURICH - FIFA and international police agency Interpol will meet next week to step up football’s fight against match-fixing and corrupt betting. FIFA says its president Sepp Blatter and Interpol secretary general Ronald Noble will announce progress after a session scheduled Monday at FIFA headquarters. Blatter has acknowledged football’s problem with international matches being organized specifically for betting scams.

In February, two friendly matches — involving Latvia and Bolivia, Estonia and Bulgaria — were played in Turkey where all seven goals were scored from penalties. FIFA charged six match officials from Hungary and Bosnia over their alleged part in the fixes. A Singaporean man who organized the matches has not been traced.

Music

The Estevan Comprehensive School hosted Music Tuesday on May 3, inviting the band students from across the entire school board to play a song together to promote the arts and music. About 1,100 students gathered in the gymnasium, filling and spilling out of the bleachers. The students played Ceremonium, a song composed by Robert W. Smith.

Mother’s Day gift tips: choosing genuine, personalized jewellery is affordable and easy

Happy Mother’s Day!

Telling Mom we care with words works well. But nothing says it quite like a genuine piece of jewellery. “You may also want to show gratitude to the other women and mother figures in your life, like an aunt, a sister, a wife or a grandmother,” said Amber Bonnell, marketing manager for Pandora Canada, a jewellery icon around the world. “A gift of personalized jewellery tells her she’s extra special – and lets her express individuality at the same time.” To select something meaningful and personalized, Bonnell suggests you first find out: • What are her favourite colours? • What are her lucky numbers, such as dates of her birthday, anniversary, or the birth of her children? • What are her favourite things to do, such as golf, skiing, reading, gardening, baking, painting, and more? • What are her favourite places to visit, relax, replenish? • Does she prefer to wear gold or silver? • Does she prefer pendants or beads, watches or bangles, or earrings with short posts or dangles? Don’t be late Did you know that 54 percent of us wait until the last minute to buy a Mother’s Day gift, according to a 2010

survey conducted nationally by Walmart Canada? “Make it easy on yourself by visiting www. PandoraGiftAdvisor.com,” Bonnell continued. “Answer a few simple questions online about the gift recipient and we will suggest the perfect charms for your bracelet to print and bring into your local Pandora retailer.” New this May, Pandora is releasing a collection of rings, charms, bracelets, earrings, necklaces and pendants inspired by the natural beauty of the flowers. Just in time for Mother’s Day, the collection also includes the new “MOM” bead, a handcrafted charm made from sterling silver with 14K gold and pink sapphires.

Debate is about more than simple arguments Now that the campaigning is done for the federal election, it’s time to open a whole new debate. The Estevan Comprehensive School is hosting the first two days of the 2011 Junior National Debates May 13 and 14, attracting about 75 students and 35 delegates from across the country who will practice several debate styles. The competition’s theme is Energy Resources, a natural topic for the Energy City. Margaret Duncan, the ECS teacher who runs the school’s debate club, said it’s good that the topics that will be pursued are relevant to this area. “There is the energy theme this year,” she said, “so a lot of topics deal with the situation around Estevan.” One particular argument the competitors will be debating is the belief that Canada should rely on renewable fuel sources instead of fossil fuels. The host province moves around each year, and Duncan said the school was asked to host for Sas-

katchewan this year by the Saskatchewan Elocution and Debate Association. Those attending the event will also have an opportunity to tour the energyproducing facilities this area has to offer. Organized by personnel at Shand, they will be visiting the Shand Power Station and some locations in the oilfields. While there are no students from the ECS debate club competing in the debates, the ECS students will be involved as moderators and judges. Being able to witness the proceedings is an experience on its own. Duncan said it’s not only about being able to argue your point, but also being exposed to multiple points of view. “The idea for the students is looking beyond what’s in front them. When they get both sides of the argument, it improves their general presentation (when they debate later).” There are eight teams from Saskatchewan who will be competing for the top spot in the country. The debates include both intermediate and junior

categories, with students in Grades 7, 8 and 9. Four teams from each of the other provinces will be at the competition, three high school junior teams and one intermediate team. The ECS students, themselves, certainly don’t lack experience. Duncan noted her team regularly competes, attending about four tournaments each year. They have taken their arguments to Regina, Alberta and as far away as Hay River for nationals. The school has close to 30 students involved in the debate club and preparing for the Junior Nationals next week. As for debating styles, Canadian National and cross-examination styles will be used during the contest. The National style allows for arguments and rebuttals, while cross examination is more of a question and answer style, similar to a lawyer questioning a witness at a trial. The school is still looking for volunteers to be judges and for sponsors. Those interested in judging can call the school and ask for Duncan. There will

be a brief training session so judges know what the rules are and what criteria the debaters are expected to meet. The finals will be held on May 15 in Regina. Those volunteering to judge in Estevan are not required to judge finals in Regina.

PUBLIC NOTICE OF ANNUAL PUBLIC N OTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL GENERAL MEETING M EETING

Dorothy Joan Symons passed away April 4, 2011 at Hillview Manor surrounded by her family and friends. She was 86 years of age. Our mother was born and raised by the sea in Worthing, Sussex, England. A well known ballroom dancer, she met our father George during World War II in England. They were married in 1945 and she arrived in Estevan in 1946 at 20 years of age. While Estevan was a cultural shock, she “did it her way” and made it her home. Mom and Dad worked side by side to build a family business. Consequently, areas of the business were named after places they frequented during their time together in England. (Beefeater Inn, Thieves Kitchen, Black Beards, Black Sheep and Sussex Arms). At the same time she raised Àve children. She taught Majorettes and was very active in the schools marching band program for twenty plus years. Her relationships with many of her students continued to be a source of great joy and comradeship lasting her lifetime. To Mom’s friends and caregivers at the Beefeater, Sussex Arms, Hillview Manor and St. Giles Anglican Church - thank you for your gentleness and caring for her. It never went unnoticed! The celebration and thanksgiving for her life service was conducted by very close friends and family. It was beautiful! “Estevan” was good to our mother. Our family was very deeply moved by the expressions and actions of sympathy on behalf of her passing. Thank you so much! She would have been very proud! - From the family of Dorothy Symons
