Thursday though,, the Farrell Agencies Arena was warm and I could sit back and enjoy the competition. While I watched the teamsters expertly manoeuvre their teams to parallel park between two barrels, or back up gently to an imagined loading dock, it did bring a question to mind; will anybody be able to do that in 50 years? Will we still care to do farm chores with horses in a decade? There are certainly advantages to using horses to feed cattle, but as Last Thursday was one of those days I tend to relish as a journalist. herds get bigger, mechanization becomes a near necessity. Michael Jackson Album Q: I have an album by Michael Jackson that is one of the first after he left the Jackson Five. Do you think I can sell it and get a lot of money? -- F.B.R., Lynchburg, Va. A: You neglected to give me the name of the album. You might try and find it in the Goldmine Standard Catalogue of American Records 1950-1975 by Ted Neely (Krause, $34.99). Most of Michael Jackson’s early solo albums seem to be worth in the $20 to $30 range, according to this guide. As with most collectibles, there are always exceptions. Condition and demand also are important. *** Q: I have a picture that is quite old and the work of Hedley S. Vicar. Is it worth anything, and where can I go to sell it? -- Jean, Farmville, Va. A: What you have appears to be a turn-ofthe-century watercolor. It was difficult to find any information about Vicar, but I did find a reference of one of his pictures being sold at auction by Lunds Auction and Appraisals with a pre-sale estimate of $150 to $175. The picture depicted a team of horses and appears to be from the same period as the one that you have. You might contact the auction house, since it has sold at least one of his works. The contact information is 926 Fort St., Victoria, BC V8V 3K2; and lunds@lunds.com. *** Q: I have several trial runs of Avon products and containers. Most of the containers were eventually issued in colored glass, mine are in flint glass. Who can I contact to find out possible values? -- William, Gas City, Ind. A: Perhaps you should contact The National Association of Avon Collectors, P.O. Box 7006, Kansas City, MO 64113. A $1 donation is suggested for people contacting the club for information. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send email to questionsforcox@ aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox is unable to personally answer all reader questions. Do not send any materials requiring return mail. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This year, instead of jumping into the whole holiday prep scene, move in a little at a time. You’ll appreciate the sense of control you’re more likely to enjoy. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The separation between the Bovine’s head and heart is never as far apart as it seems. Both senses work best when they come out of logic and honesty. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The best way to keep those pre-holiday pressures under control is to just say no to taking on new tasks while you’re still trying to work with a heap

of others. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) News means a change might be on its way, but what does it hold? Don’t just ask questions; make sure you get answers you can trust. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Old friends and new have one thing in common: Both your longtime and newly minted pals have much wisdom to impart. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With time running out, this is a good time for you to show ‘em all what those Virgo superorganizational skills can do. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Librans and holidays are made for each other, especially if children and animals are going to be part of your joyous season.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Time is getting too short to allow a spat to taint the holiday season. Restart your relationship and reschedule holiday fun times. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Seeking advice is laudable. You might learn far more than you thought you could. Stay with it. CAPRICORN (De-

cember 22 to January 19) Continuing to assess changes works toward your getting your new project up and ready. Trusted colleagues remain ready to help. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) That new situation needs a lot of attention, but it’s worth it. This is a very good time for you to involve the arts in what you do.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It might be a good idea to slow your hectic holiday pace so that you don’t rush past what -- or who -- you’re hoping to rush toward. • Pregnant women might be particularly interested in the following: The animal that is pregnant the longest is the African elephant, with an average gestation period of 660 days (though some pregnancies can last up to 100 days longer). The record for shortest gestation period is held jointly by three marsupials, including the American opossum, which remain pregnant for only 12 to 13 days. • During this season of excess, it might be worthwhile to remember that the typical holiday meal contains more than 3,000 calories. It also might be worthwhile to remember that the suggested daily intake of calories for men is 2,500; for women it’s 2,000. • If you’re an arachnophobe, you might not want to read the following tidbit of information: Scientists in Madagascar recently discovered a new species of bark spider that spins webs over rivers and other bodies of water. What makes these webs noteworthy is that they are the largest ever recorded, measuring up to 82 feet across. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2010 *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: A cold front came in, and I had head/face pressure. What is that all about? -- R.M.

Tough Dandruff Calls for a Prescription DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am writing to inquire about the mite that invades one’s body and causes dandruff on the head. I have used Selsun Blue shampoo, but it is taking so long to see an effect. I wonder if there is an antibiotic that I could take to get rid of it faster. -- M.S. ANSWER: Dandruff is one form of seborrheic dermatitis -- skin inflammation, along with an overproduction of skin cells and oil. The scalp is the place most often affected, but it also can be found on the sides and bridge of the nose, the eyebrows, ears, chest and back. A mite doesn’t cause it. Some speculate that a yeast (fungus) called Malassezia might be the troublemaker. This yeast is also found on scalps of those without dandruff, but those with dandruff have greatly increased numbers of it. Quite often, nonprescription treatments work well for dandruff. Selsun Blue is a good one. If, after one month of treatment, there’s no progress, then change to another. Head and Shoulders, Nizoral A-D and T-Gel are a sample of the many products on drugstore shelves. Nizoral A-D contains ketoconazole, a medicine that is active against the Malassezia yeast. Follow directions carefully. Usually they call for daily use until there’s some improvement, and then every-other-day use for a month. From that time on, less-frequent applications are OK. The condition tends to be chronic, so a long commitment is the rule. If you’re not making any progress with over-thecounter preparations, then a doctor can provide you with a prescription for more powerful items.

ANSWER: A change in barometric pressure or a drop in temperature can increase the pain of arthritic joints. Weather changes also can trigger migraine headaches. I haven’t seen head pressure mentioned as occurring with weather changes, but I can imagine how it might happen. The sinus cavities of the head could be subjected to a difference between their own internal pressure and the outside barometric pressure. Perhaps you and I are headed for a Nobel prize with this discovery. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

By Samantha Mazzotta Vacuuming Up Wasps Q: I’m writing regarding your article in which a reader suggested removing wasps from a home’s siding by using a vacuum hose. You weren’t certain exactly how this worked. I have used a shop vacuum for years to get rid of wasps, with great success. When they are entering the opening in the wall or wherever their nest is located, the wasps cannot escape the suction created when the vacuum

hose is placed next to the hole. This is a safe, chemical-free way to get rid of literally thousands of wasps. They do not attempt to sting or bother you in any way because they are intent on entering their nest. All you have to do is stand motionless with the vacuum hose held in place. The last time I did it, I counted (yes, counted) over 2,000 wasps in a relatively short time period. I have also used the same method to get rid of a bat in the house. All I had to do was wait for it to alight (usually somewhere up high), put the hose over it and “plunk,” it was in the vacuum canister. Remember though, don’t open the shop vac inside the house or leave the vacuum hose unsealed after turning it off. This

BUILDING NUMBERING BYLAW #2008-1789

At the request of Emergency Services, City Council passed the referred bylaw for the safety and protection of the Citizens of Estevan. When Emergency Services are called to a speciÀc address, it is very important that they can quickly identify the property when arriving on scene. Most buildings in the City are already easily identiÀed from the street as the civic addresses are prominently displayed on the front of the buildings. There are cases, however when buildings need to be accessed from back lanes, therefore the Building Numbering Bylaw requires the civic address clearly visible from the back lane. Such numbers may be attached to a fence, garage or freestanding permanent sign in order that emergency services can also identify properties from the back lane. Note: Properties without back lanes are exempt. In cases of new construction or renovation, properties are to display a street address number afÀxed to or legibly painted on a temporary sign visible from the road. For more details you may view the bylaw on the City of Estevan website at www.estevan.ca Please be advised that bylaw enforcement will be performing inspections to ensure bylaw compliance.

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2010

Most people eat more at Thanksgiving dinner than they consume in a normal day, and then continue overeating at year-end. So it helps to have a plan in place to avoid any holiday gobbling that you might pay for later. Turkey, yams, mashed potatoes, green beans and cranberry sauce are all nutritious, so long as lots of salt, sugar and butter haven’t been added to them, says Kathleen Duran-Thal, director of nutrition at Cooper Wellness Center in Dallas. An earlier study by researchers at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases found that Americans usually gain only one pound during the winter holidays, but the weight put on then isn’t shed in the new year. Those findings contradict many people’s views that they gain five to 10 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Researchers said the effects of weight gain at year-end, however, are worth worrying about because they contribute to increased weight

over time. Keeping weight stable in the fall and winter may help prevent age-related weight gain and associated diseases, says Dr. Riva Rahl, medical director at Cooper Wellness. In addition to not looking or feeling top-notch, adults with excess weight are at greater risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and certain cancers, she says. Cooper Wellness experts say to go ahead and enjoy your favorite Thanksgiving foods, but consider making healthy choices at your turkey dinner. They offer some tips for keeping you from fiddling with your belt at the end of the meal. 1. First of all, don’t arrive at a Thanksgiving dinner hungry. Eat a good breakfast, and maybe even lunch that day. 2. Fill half your plate with vegetables, one quarter of it with lean meat, and one quarter with starches like mashed potatoes and turkey dressing. 3. Choose white-meat turkey and avoid eating the skin. 4. Void gravy. Turkey doesn’t need to be smothered in gravy to taste good. If you want gravy, just drip a little on your meat and potatoes. 5. Limit yourself to small helpings of heavily sweetened yams and cranberry sauces.

6. Use restraint when dinner rolls are passed around. Buttered rolls may melt in your mouth, but they’re full of calories, so eat only one. 7. Try sampling in moderation the many foods that you have looked forward to. And consider bringing something healthy to the dinner, like a side dish that’s low in fat, sugar and salt. 8. Eat slowly. By eating Thanksgiving dinner slowly, your body has time to register when it is full so that you don’t consume too much. 9. At dessert time, try to choose the lightest options. Pick pumpkin over pecan pie, for example, and avoid 200 calories in the process. Or just eat half a piece of pie, and pass on whipped toppings and ice cream. As dinner winds down over coffee, avoid any plates of additional sweets that may be sitting on the table. 10. After Thanksgiving dinner, take a walk with your friends or family. Fifteen minutes of walking will get your blood circulating and can burn off 100 calories, says Susie Kania, exercise physiologist at Cooper Wellness. The fresh air will invigorate you after a long stay at the table. (Information courtesy of Cooper Wellness, www. cooperwellness.com) (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

CITY PAGE CITY OF ESTEVAN SNOW REMOVAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the goal of the snow removal policy? The goal of the snow removal policy is to provide a timely, adequate and cost effective level of service so that streets are passable and vehicles can move in the City. Once the initial clean-up is completed standard procedure of Public Works is to continue to widen and grade streets. A copy of the full policy is available at www. estevan.ca When does the City start to clean up after a snow storm? Public Works monitors the streets and the major response to a snow storm does not generally start until it has stopped snowing. It is dangerous due to reduced visibility and ineffective to clear Priority 1 areas more than once if the streets are passable. Streets are monitored and intersections will be sanded or trouble areas cleared if necessary. Who do we call to report icy streets, blocked intersection or other snow related issues? Please call 634-1800 during regular hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. After hours, please call the after-hours emergency number at 634- 3770. The after hour calls are directed to an answering service who will forward calls to the appropriate persons. As well, Estevan Police Services monitor the streets after hours and will request that the intersections be sanded or trouble areas be cleared. How does the City determine what streets get cleaned first? The City classifies the streets into 3 priorities: Priority 1 – Arterial Streets Streets with high volumes of traffic and main routes through and around the City such as 4th Street – average daily traffic volume of more than 8,000. Priority 2 – Collector Roads Streets with somewhat lesser volumes of traffic and designed to route traffic from local streets to the Arterial Streets such as Nicholson Road – average daily traffic of between 1,000 and 8,000. Priority 3 – Local Streets Streets that generally only serve the people that live in that area with low volumes of traffic and mostly residential – less than 1,000 average daily traffic volume. Within Priority Three there are some streets that are extremely narrow and have to be windrowed and transported away in the same day such as Grundeen Crescent.

Will the City complete some areas more than once in a major snowfall before all streets are completed? Yes, if the Priority 1 and 2 become impassable those streets would be cleared of snow again to ensure that traffic can move. Can home owners blow snow from their sidewalks, driveways and parking lots into streets? No, property owners cannot as it makes it more difficult for the city to complete a proper cleanup; it causes the streets to be rougher than necessary, causes a hazard to motorists and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. The only place this is permitted is the downtown business district as they have nowhere else to shovel the snow to. Should we keep our sidewalks clear of snow? Yes, the Traffic Bylaw requires it as it makes it safer for pedestrians and those people that have to walk on the streets for work purposes such as letter carriers and meter readers. Also please make sure that extension cords crossing sidewalks to vehicles do not create trip hazards. Can we pile snow from the sidewalks on the streets? No, the only place this is allowed is the downtown business district as these buildings do not have any other area to move the snow to. Can home and business owners pile snow on their own private properties adjacent to alleys and streets? Yes, however make sure that the piles are not so high as to create a blind corner limiting visibility for pedestrians and motorist Can home and business owners pile snow on existing windrows? No, this creates visibility and driving hazards, makes it more difficult and time consuming to remove the windrows and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. Can snow be piled in city alleys and streets? No this eliminates access for garbage collection, fire protection and other emergency services and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. However it is permitted in cul-de-sacs as long as the snow is piled in the centre of the cul-de-sac only as other piles of snow impact neighbors and makes snow removal more difficult. Can I park my spare vehicle or Motor Home on the Street? Yes, however vehicles are not permitted to be parked

ESTEVAN THE ENERGY CITY

on any streets in excess of 24 hours and cause a lot of problems for snow removal and traffic. Can I park on the streets for less than 24 hours? Yes, however in the event of a major snowstorm we ask that all vehicles be parked in driveways or other areas where possible. In the event of a Major snowstorm the City plans to have all areas windrowed where required as soon as possible, providing equipment is operational. Please do not park your vehicles on the streets if possible as the vehicles access for snow removal equipment and have greater potential of being damaged by other vehicles and equipment. When are City snow dump areas used? The City Snow dump sites are operational from 6am – 10pm, city equipment does not operate at these locations outside of these hours. The City also asks that:

• Children are kept away from snow dump sites and piles. These are dangerous areas when equipment is working, as well as voids in the piles may collapse trapping children. • Please keep clear of snow clearing equipment and crews. If possible choose an alternate route to avoid delays. • Please keep back 20m of Sanding equipment, as they will be discharging sand at intersections of streets, lanes, and high traffic zones. • Please keep all emergency exits buildings clear of snow and ice. Your cooperation and patience is greatly appreciated.

By Healthy Exchanges Creamy Tuna Macaroni Salad Douglas James Lesy Douglas James Lesy passed away in a tragic motorcycle accident on October 2, 2010, at the age of 51. Doug, the second son of George and Rita Lesy, was born in the old Oxbow Hospital on November 12, 1958. He had two sisters and three brothers, Sharon, Shelly, Lloyd, Alan and Rean. They grew up on the family farm in the Auburnton district, where Doug started school. He was then bused to Oxbow to attend school and graduated in 1977. With his good nature and being a hardworking farm boy, he was employed by Flint Construction in Estevan. In the oil patch, he did many jobs - service rigs, drilling rigs, truck driver hauling pipe and pump jacks for several different companies and operated the picker truck. Doug always said, “The work and weather are mighty harsh, but the pay is OK.” Doug tried farming for a short time, but with much hard work and no gain, it had to go. Doug was a very kind and caring person with a heart of gold. He always had a good word for everyone and only saw the best in people; thus making many, many really dear friends in his life on Earth. Doug and Donna Cyr had a son, Joseph Daniel George Lesy (Jordy), on February 13, 2000. Doug cherished his little boy with all his heart. When Doug and Donna parted ways, he was broken. Life was never the same. He still cared for his family and spent what time he could with Jordy. All Doug’s family will always love Donna and Jordy forever (you are part of us). Doug took up welding for others until he felt he could operate his own unit - this being his Ànal way of life. Doug’s passion was his Harley. He rode many miles across Canada from coast to coast several times, to Alaska, through the States to California and Mexico. Doug attended Sturgis Bike Rally for well over twenty years. He made many friends on his travels. When the time came to be called Home, he was taken from us doing what he loved to do best. “Take care bikers and ride safely.”

Thank You We would like to thank everyone who supported us in the loss of our son and brother, Doug Lesy (Hippy). Thanks for the many hugs and tears, cards, money, food, Áowers, phone calls and letters. Thanks to Alice for the great service and for sharing our loss with us. Thanks Anita for music and your help in more ways. Thanks to Redpath for every act of kindness possible. Thanks to the Legion and staff for the lunch and patience while we were out at Dalesboro Cemetery. Thanks to Darcy Mitchell for the well written eulogy given in our church, you truly made us feel like Doug was a friend to all and will be missed by many. Thanks to the numerous bikers who came to show their last respects. We will never forget all you guys and gals. Thanks to Ed and Donna Jamieson for coming to my home and crying with me. The Lord Giveth and the Lord taketh Away. Doug left this Earth doing what he loved doing the best. Many thanks go out to all. - Mother, Rita; Son, Jordy; Lloyd, Sharon, Alan, Shelly and Rean TM1*27
