I love, hate, love, hate, love, hate, love, hate, love this team Screw the oilfield industry, I’m sinking my investment dollars into psychiatry clinics. Admittedly it’s not a big chunk of cash, but I figure there is some major growth potential here in Saskatchewan as long as the Roughriders are playing. Seriously have you ever seen a team that can elicit such a range of emotions than the Riders? In the course of a 60 minute football game the ol’ Green and White are equal parts maddening, frustrating, terrifying, stupefying, exhilarating and thrilling. It’s enough to push you over the edge or at the very least onto a leather couch. I had the pleasure(?) of attending Sunday’s 41-38 double overtime win over the B.C. Lions and I am pretty sure at least half of the people who packed into Taylor Field were ready for the rubber room after that game. The term roller coaster of emotions is a cliché but it would certainly be an apt description of what the Riders put their fans through Sunday. In the first half I was ready to punch someone watching Darian Durant forget how to throw a football. I mean, he was awful. Granted he didn’t get a lot of time to throw the football, but even when he did have some time every pass was either 10 feet too high or five feet behind the receiver. But just when people were getting ready to write him off, bang, he throws the mother of all bombs to Weston Dressler. So here we go, back up the roller coaster. Then, just as it looks like the Riders are punching their tickets for Calgary, Travis Lulay tosses a mini Hail Mary to Emmanuel Arecenaux to tie the game. Are you kidding me? I have never heard almost 30,000 people go from full volume to so quiet you could hear your cell phone ringing so fast in my life. But then there’s overtime and the roller coaster ride starts again. It’s more than any person should have to take. You know as a Rider fan that it’s never easy, but Sunday’s game was flat out ridiculous. So now they’ve got Calgary and if the past games from this season are any indication, Sunday’s game is going to put everyone through the wringer again. But for the sake of my sanity and the sanity of others, I have a plea for the Riders. Either blow the Stampeders out or roll over early and lose.
Chad Saxon
Don’t get me wrong, I want to see a win as much as anyone but I can’t take another game like the B.C. game or the one from earlier this year when Ken Miller had the world’s biggest brain fart and decided to go for the single point instead of a field goal. So go out, put up 35 points in the first half and then shut down the Stampeders in the second half and, voila, Grey Cup here we come. Sounds easy enough. •••••• Maybe it’s the euphoria that comes from having a winning team over the past few years, but far too many Rider fans are becoming belligerent jerks. Or maybe it’s just the section I was in Sunday. Either way, what happened to common courtesy among fans? There was a time when you didn’t dare get up to go to the washroom or for a drink in the middle of a series. You waited for a change of possession or a score and then you got up and went. Apparently that has changed. More than once someone decided to get up, not only in the middle of a series but as the play was on. What’s with that? Worse yet, there is a group of people who think it’s either funny or cool to walk along the bench in the process of leaving or to celebrate. That isn’t so bad in the middle of summer but when you’re at a cold game with slush and snow all over the ground it’s a big time no-no. It’s cold enough but then you sit down and the bench is layered with mud and melted snow. Let me tell you, there’s nothing like a frozen tookus at a football game. •••••• Just to touch on hockey for a moment, there needs to be a serious change of mindset at the NHL offices. Late last week, Brent Burns of the Minnesota Wild took the butt end of his stick and drove it into the face of Florida’s Steve Bernier. Burns hit Bernier so hard that he now has a broken orbital bone and is out for a month most likely. Burns’ punishment? Two games. That’s right, for intentionally breaking a guy’s eye socket and putting him out for a month, Burns got a two game suspension. This league has a serious issue with how it looks at discipline. If a guy gets six games for grabbing a fan and giving him a shake, then how do you give a player just two games for smashing in another player’s face? I would love to hear the Hobbit in charge explain that.
of a career choice. Of course when you consider agriculture, it is a field which goes well beyond actually owning land and tilling the soil, although there will be a need for future farmers too. While farming may not have been the realm of university graduates in the past, many immigrants who opened the west were poorly educated, and back then hard work was enough to ensure success. Third book in compelling series now available By Norm Park Of The Mercury They have been coming at readers in a fast and furious fashion and they have been gobbled up by those who love to devour words which brings a smile to author Marie Calder. The third book in what is being described as “The Other Side” series has been released by Borealis Press of Ottawa and it is gaining quick approval according to early sales. The Other Side of Pain hit the book reading world this past week. It is the most recent installment, following on the heels of The Other Side of War, which was released in late summer and The Other Side of Fear, which followed in mid-September. “But the fourth book won’t be out until next spring,” said Calder, noting that the publishers are already busy with a second printing of the first book in the series since most of the original 2,000 copies have been sold. The series takes readers through a series of events, recounting the trials and travails of Calder’s father Ed Donais who befriended a German family just a short time after the conclusion of the Second World War. The books are listed as fiction, but are based on fact. Since some dialogue has to be crafted by Calder
in the retelling, the novels are required to carry the fiction title. But make no mistake, it’s her story … her father’s story. The first book introduces the main characters who include Donais and his army buddies stationed as reconstructive engineers near a small German community in the war-torn country. They are housed in battered railway boxcars that are located near the home of a German family that makes do with what little they have in the form of food and materials. Donais, who is homesick for his family back in southeast Saskatchewan, befriends a 10-year-old German boy and his parents and sisters and the story takes off from there. By helping a starving German family, Donais not only helped himself, but set the stage for a lasting impression that carried over to include the next generation of the two families who got together again in the late 1990s. The Other Side of Fear and The Other Side of Pain, take the readers forward and closer to these encounters. For Calder, the rigorous marketing schedule has been a roller-coaster ride, but one that she has found most interesting since she has engaged in author readings and book signings along the way including Remembrance Day appearances in both
Redvers and Bienfait. On Nov. 17 she’ll be in Kennedy before slipping over to Manor in the evening for a second reading, then back to the small community of Tilston, Manitoba, where the Donais family has roots, and where the first book in the series was launched. That happens on Nov. 21. She’s also booked for the Dickens’ Festival in Carlyle on Dec. 4. But before that, she’ll be jaunting out to British Columbia where she has a series of appearances booked with Black Bond Books, a small chain of booksellers who have outlets in Vancouver, Mission and Langley. She then attends Robert Bateman High School in Vancouver on Nov. 29. “I also went to McNally Robinson in Saskatoon. They have a great management and events co-ordinator there. Their billboard and marketing plan that features emerging authors is pretty impressive,” said Calder, whose previous experience with writing was restricted to a children’s book which fit well into her groove as a retired elementary school teacher. Make Shiny Votives to Warm Holiday Home There’s more to Thanksgiving Day leftovers than meets the eye. If you used disposable aluminum-foil pans or trays from the supermarket for roasting the turkey and for baking cookies and pies, think again before tossing them into the recycle bin. Wash these “leftovers” well, gather any extras you didn’t use, and then check out this fun idea for creating “tin craft”-look shiny votive candleholders to brighten your December holiday home. Once you get started, you’ll discover it’s a fun and easy afternoon activity to enjoy with your school-age kids during a wonderful long weekend. Here’s the stuff you’ll need for one votive candle holder: --Clean, disposable aluminum-foil roasting pan, baking tray or cookie sheet and one disposable aluminum souffle-size cup (available at supermarkets) --Pencil --Scissors --Spoon --Stapler --Pushpin, small hole punch and/or hammer and nail
--Clean sand or Kosher salt --Votive candle Here’s the fun in 3 easy steps: 1. Use a pencil to trace or draw a 4-inch-by-5-inch shape, such as a star, leaf or flower, on the smooth surface of a disposable aluminum-foil roasting pan or cookie sheet. Bold designs in kids’ coloring books are helpful to use for tracing a simple shape. Or, you might want to use a favorite cookie cutter for a pattern. Cut out the foil shape with scissors, rounding any sharp edges and smoothing out any wrinkles by rubbing the surface with a spoon. 2. Use a pushpin, small hole punch or a hammer and a nail to make several randomly spaced holes on the foil. If you are using a hammer and nail, place a stack of newspapers underneath for padding. If you wish, draw lines and
details onto the aluminum on the back side with a pencil to create some impressions in the soft metal. 3. Cut a smooth strip of aluminum to fit around

CITY OF ESTEVAN SNOW REMOVAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the goal of the snow removal policy? The goal of the snow removal policy is to provide a timely, adequate and cost effective level of service so that streets are passable and vehicles can move in the City. Once the initial clean-up is completed standard procedure of Public Works is to continue to widen and grade streets. A copy of the full policy is available at www. estevan.ca When does the City start to clean up after a snow storm? Public Works monitors the streets and the major response to a snow storm does not generally start until it has stopped snowing. It is dangerous due to reduced visibility and ineffective to clear Priority 1 areas more than once if the streets are passable. Streets are monitored and intersections will be sanded or trouble areas cleared if necessary. Who do we call to report icy streets, blocked intersection or other snow related issues? Please call 634-1800 during regular hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. After hours, please call the after-hours emergency number at 634- 3770. The after hour calls are directed to an answering service who will forward calls to the appropriate persons. As well, Estevan Police Services monitor the streets after hours and will request that the intersections be sanded or trouble areas be cleared. How does the City determine what streets get cleaned first? The City classifies the streets into 3 priorities: Priority 1 – Arterial Streets Streets with high volumes of traffic and main routes through and around the City such as 4th Street – average daily traffic volume of more than 8,000. Priority 2 – Collector Roads Streets with somewhat lesser volumes of traffic and designed to route traffic from local streets to the Arterial Streets such as Nicholson Road – average daily traffic of between 1,000 and 8,000. Priority 3 – Local Streets Streets that generally only serve the people that live in that area with low volumes of traffic and mostly residential – less than 1,000 average daily traffic volume. Within Priority Three there are some streets that are extremely narrow and have to be windrowed and transported away in the same day such as Grundeen Crescent.
Will the City complete some areas more than once in a major snowfall before all streets are completed? Yes, if the Priority 1 and 2 become impassable those streets would be cleared of snow again to ensure that traffic can move. Can home owners blow snow from their sidewalks, driveways and parking lots into streets? No, property owners cannot as it makes it more difficult for the city to complete a proper cleanup; it causes the streets to be rougher than necessary, causes a hazard to motorists and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. The only place this is permitted is the downtown business district as they have nowhere else to shovel the snow to. Should we keep our sidewalks clear of snow? Yes, the Traffic Bylaw requires it as it makes it safer for pedestrians and those people that have to walk on the streets for work purposes such as letter carriers and meter readers. Also please make sure that extension cords crossing sidewalks to vehicles do not create trip hazards. Can we pile snow from the sidewalks on the streets? No, the only place this is allowed is the downtown business district as these buildings do not have any other area to move the snow to. Can home and business owners pile snow on their own private properties adjacent to alleys and streets? Yes, however make sure that the piles are not so high as to create a blind corner limiting visibility for pedestrians and motorist Can home and business owners pile snow on existing windrows? No, this creates visibility and driving hazards, makes it more difficult and time consuming to remove the windrows and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. Can snow be piled in city alleys and streets? No this eliminates access for garbage collection, fire protection and other emergency services and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. However it is permitted in cul-de-sacs as long as the snow is piled in the centre of the cul-de-sac only as other piles of snow impact neighbors and makes snow removal more difficult. Can I park my spare vehicle or Motor Home on the Street? Yes, however vehicles are not permitted to be parked

on any streets in excess of 24 hours and cause a lot of problems for snow removal and traffic. Can I park on the streets for less than 24 hours? Yes, however in the event of a major snowstorm we ask that all vehicles be parked in driveways or other areas where possible. In the event of a Major snowstorm the City plans to have all areas windrowed where required as soon as possible, providing equipment is operational. Please do not park your vehicles on the streets if possible as the vehicles access for snow removal equipment and have greater potential of being damaged by other vehicles and equipment. When are City snow dump areas used? The City Snow dump sites are operational from 6am – 10pm, city equipment does not operate at these locations outside of these hours. The City also asks that:
• Children are kept away from snow dump sites and piles. These are dangerous areas when equipment is working, as well as voids in the piles may collapse trapping children. • Please keep clear of snow clearing equipment and crews. If possible choose an alternate route to avoid delays. • Please keep back 20m of Sanding equipment, as they will be discharging sand at intersections of streets, lanes, and high traffic zones. • Please keep all emergency exits buildings clear of snow and ice. Your cooperation and patience is greatly appreciated.

“Sinatra: Hollywood His Way” by Tim Knight (Running Press, $35) Reviewed by Larry Cox Although it’s been more than a decade since the death of Frank Sinatra, he is still very much a part of our American culture. Several new biographies have been published, his recordings sell well, and an entire satellite station is devoted to his music. In his new book, film critic Tim Knight documents the 59 films in which Sinatra appeared, beginning with RKO’s “Higher and Higher” from 1943, and ending with his final credit, “Listen Up! The Lives of Quincy Jones,” released by Warner Brothers in 1991. Knight’s book covers each film with reviews, behind-the-scene stories and hundreds of rare color and black-and-white photographs, making this the ultimate guide to the films of Frank Sinatra. This coffee-table-size book is divided into four basic parts: “Frankie’s Rise and Fall, 1941-1952”; “The Crooner Comes Back, 19531959”; “The Rat Pack Years, 1960-1964”; and “Sinatra’s Hollywood Twilight, 19651991.” Sinatra made several memorable movies, including “From Here to Eternity,” which marked his 1953 comeback, and perhaps his best movie performance, John Frankenheimer’s gritty 1962 classic “The Manchurian Candidate.” It’s Sinatra’s flops, however, that make this book so intriguing. For example, one has to wonder why he agreed to get involved in such monumental misfires as “The Devil at Four O’Clock,” “The Naked Runner” and “None But the Brave,” which he also directed. The fact that he took such chances is why he remains such an interesting entertainer. Sinatra never played it safe. Knight has researched his subject well and sets the record straight. For example, despite rumors to the contrary, Sinatra did not pull “The Manchurian Candidate” from circulation due to political concerns, and it was never a “lost” film. Today, nearly 50 years after its premiere, the movie is regarded as a masterpiece. Time has not diminished either its power or relevance, and the same might be said for Frank Sinatra. • It was British playwright Tom Stoppard who made the following observation: “Skill without imagination is craftsmanship and gives us many useful objects such as wickerwork picnic baskets. Imagination without skill gives us modern art.” • You’ve probably had some experience with hail at some point in your life, but probably not with hail like this: The heaviest recorded hailstone in the world fell in Bangladesh in 1986; it weighed a whopping 2.25 pounds. The largest hailstone, which fell earlier this year in South Dakota, measured 8 inches in diameter. Be glad your car -- or your head -- wasn’t in the way. • William Henry Harrison, the country’s sixth commander-in-chief, had the shortest tenure of any United States president. He died of pneumonia just 32 days after taking ofÀce. • In 1666, the Great Fire of London destroyed 13,200 homes, 87 parish
churches and St. Paul’s Cathedral, and it left some 70,000 people homeless. It also provided the impetus for the beginning of the insurance industry. After the conÁagration, Nicholas Barbon, a wellto-do doctor, realized how much of his wealth was Áammable. A year after the Great Fire, he began the world’s Àrst insurance company. • The men and women who venture into space have to adapt themselves to changing environments both when they enter space and when they return home. Many astronauts and cosmonauts say that one of the most difÀcult things to adjust to when returning to earth from space is the fact that when you let go of something, it falls to the ground. • If you’re a longtime football fan, you might not be surprised to learn that between 1983 and 2006, the average weight of NFL players rose by 10 percent. *** (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
