Every once in awhile, a book is published that eloquently depicts the emotional toll and devastating impact that parental drug addiction and poverty have on its most powerless victims -- children. In “Breaking Night,” first-time author Liz Murray recounts her hardscrabble journey from homelessness to Harvard with unflinching detail in this beautifully written, emotionally raw memoir.

Liz had an epiphany: She was capable of carving out a life for herself that was in no way limited by what had occurred in her past. She returned to school, studying round the clock in tenement stairwells, dimly lit hallways and near-empty subway cars. “Breaking night” is urban slang for staying up through the night until the sun rises, which is what Liz did in order to study and squeeze four years of

high school into two. While homeless, Liz graduated high school, won a New York Times scholarship and was accepted into Harvard University. Liz Murray’s extraordinary story of survival and forgiveness is a stellar example that it is possible

to rise above impoverished circumstances and prevail, despite all imaginable odds. Her courageous story speaks for itself. Her triumph and tenacious determination speaks to us all. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

One of the many little fur balls we have right now. Come down and see all of our little gems, I am sure you will fall in love with one or maybe even 2 of them.

My name is Cara, I am the mother of that orange guy behind me, I helped foster several other kittens while I was caring for my own. I am kind of tired of being a Mom, I am thinking maybe it is my turn to be pampered and cared for by a loving forever home.

Hi, my name is Livita, I am a female spayed Tabby with lots of orange hi-lights. As you can see, I am quite pretty. I would love to have my forever home before Christmas.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am in the eighth month of my first pregnancy. I’ve a friend who keeps telling me to have a C-section. She says it’s quick and painless. I never considered this and wonder about its wisdom. What would you recommend? Does having a C-section mean all future deliveries have to be done the same way? -- K.M. ANSWER: Cesarean sections can be lifesaving for the infant and for the mother. The reasons for having one don’t include speed of delivery simply for speed’s sake or for avoiding labor pain. You realize that a C-section involves surgical incisions, which, after the anesthesia wears off, are painful. And you realize that you have to recuperate from this operation as you would from any operation. Furthermore, all surgery involves potential dangers and complications. Serious bleeding is always possible. The

uterus can become infected. Injuries to other pelvic organs can occur. Natural childbirth is painful, but the pain can be minimized in a number of effective ways. I believe you’ll be surprised at how tolerable childbirth is. As for future pregnancies, the standard teaching used to be that once a woman had a C-section, all her future deliveries had to be C-sections. That’s no longer true. Second deliveries after a C-section can be vaginal deliveries, depending on

It’s their way of coping with situations that generate discomfort. It’s not a tic, although it is somewhat similar. Both are involuntary. I would first talk to the young lady in a compassionate way and tell her that this behavior is misinterpreted by people and that she should make a conscious effort to suppress the giggling. Blue Friday

Students at Bienfait’s Weldon School wore blue Friday as a sign of peace and safety. Friday was a day for the students to focus on the message of Mahatma Gandhi who said “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Blue was chosen as it is the colour worn by the United Nations Peacekeepers.

ALL MY CHILDREN The courtroom was shocked by the verdict in David’s murder trial. Angie wondered how Jesse found out the sex of their baby before she did. Griffin showed up looking for Zach. Liza announced that she would continue to do her job no matter what. Kendall lashed out at Greenlee despite her apologies. Krystal showed that she was a good friend. Wait to See: Liza warned Jackson that he’ll never be able to practice law again. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Amber detained Liam from the party. Meanwhile, Oliver and Hope began kissing after she was “stood up” by Liam. Jackie asked Nick to give her back the company so she could restore its reputation. Bill advised Liam that he should break up with Hope for cheating on him. Brooke asked Stephanie to support Thomas’ new fashion line. Amber asked Oliver if they could be friends with

benefits. Wait to See: Whip overhears a conversation between Ridge and Taylor. DAYS OF OUR LIVES Maggie was rescued from the sarcophagus and was expected to make a full recovery. Hope was put in solitary confinement after sending Jennifer a text message. Vivian vowed revenge against everyone involved in her “burial.” A delirious Melanie and Nathan confessed their true feelings for one another. Sami didn’t turn over her children to EJ as planned. Will and Gabi grew closer during all the turmoil involving their families. Wait to See: Philip is forced to make a confession. GENERAL HOSPITAL Sonny and Brenda got caught up in the past and shared a passionate kiss. Lisa was merely given probation for her crimes against Robin. Dante and Lulu shared a romantic evening together. Maxie gave Matt a piece of her mind for doubting her story. Johnny was the only one who knew the truth about Lisa. Claire asked to join Diane’s firm as a defense attorney. The Quartermaines and the Spencers shared an Italian Thanksgiving. Wait to See: Sonny and Brenda go on a date.

ONE LIFE TO LIVE Clint doctored the paternity test to make it appear that Charlie was Rex’s father. Jessica told Ford that he was the father of her baby, not Brody. Marty intercepted Natalie’s DNA results before she could see them. Echo showed up on Viki’s doorstep with nowhere to live. Langston warned Ford that she was practicing abstinence. Echo bonded with Shane but didn’t approve of Gigi. Joey arrived in Llanview while Kelly searched for him in London. Wait to See: Clint gives Eddie a gun. THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Victor set his sights on both Adam and Jack in his quest for revenge. Blood was found in Skye’s hotel room, and she was nowhere to be found. Teddy Bear Q: I love teddy bears and recently inherited one that has been in my family for almost a century. It is a blond-colored mohair bear made by Farnell, with glass eyes and defined paws. I would like to get an idea of how much it is worth for insurance purposes. Can you help me? -- Susan, Amsterdam, N.Y. A: One of the newest guides is the nifty Collector’s Guide to Teddy Bears, by Judith Miller and published by Firefly Books. Miller, who had a Merrythought Bear as a child, claims your bear was crafted in about 1918 and is worth in the $1,500 to $3,000 range, depending on condition. *** Q: When I was a kid, I took my PB&J sandwiches to school in a “Star Trek” lunchbox made by Aladdin. It is still in fairly decent condition with its original thermos bottle. I have been offered $150 for it, but am hesitant. What is your advice? -- Charlie, Los Gatos, Calif. A: Your lunchbox was manufactured in 1968 and is valued at $450, according to Toys and Prices, edited by Karen O’Brien (Krause, $19.99). I contacted two collectors, who both agreed with this assessment. *** Q: I have seven pieces of Red Wing pottery and wonder if you can recommend a good price guide. -- Laura, Greenfield, Mass. A: There are several excellent guides. My personal favorite is Warman’s

Celebrate

• Here’s a great bit of advice given to a friend who recently gave birth to a darling baby boy: When you receive some of the morecomplicated items from your gift registry, try them out right away. Before the baby comes, that is. You’ll have little time to set them up and learn how to work them with a newborn to care for. • Line a measuring cup with a plastic sandwich bag or plastic wrap to keep it clean between uses if you know you will be using it for multiple ingredients. • “I go through a lot of papers. Sometimes, instead of using one of those rubber fingers (and definitely instead of licking my finger), I twist a wide rubber band loosely but securely around the tip of my index finger. It really works.” -- R.F. in Massachusetts • “Clean a buildup of starch on your iron by wiping it down with a solution of diluted vinegar -- one part vinegar to three parts water. If you have a curling iron or flat iron for your hair, you can get rid of hairspray gunk

the same way, just dampen a cloth with the mixture and wipe the iron clean.” -- F.P. in Pennsylvania • Filling up unused space in your deep freeze helps it to work more efficiently. An easy way to do this (and to prepare for holiday parties) is to bag ice from your regular freezer and use the bags to fill any empty areas in your deep freeze. You’ll always have a steady supply of ice, and it can be dumped out if you need the space. • Looking for an excellent prewash for ring around the collar? Look no further than your shower. Rub a small amount of shampoo in the stains and let sit for 5 minutes, then launder as usual. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. MASTER PATHWAY SYSTEM MEETING A public meeting on the proposed Master Pathway system for Estevan will be held on Thursday, December 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the lower conference room at City Hall. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. CITY OF ESTEVAN SNOW REMOVAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the goal of the snow removal policy? The goal of the snow removal policy is to provide a timely, adequate and cost effective level of service so that streets are passable and vehicles can move in the City. Once the initial clean-up is completed standard procedure of Public Works is to continue to widen and grade streets. A copy of the full policy is available at www. estevan.ca When does the City start to clean up after a snow storm? Public Works monitors the streets and the major response to a snow storm does not generally start until it has stopped snowing. It is dangerous due to reduced visibility and ineffective to clear Priority 1 areas more than once if the streets are passable. Streets are monitored and intersections will be sanded or trouble areas cleared if necessary. Who do we call to report icy streets, blocked intersection or other snow related issues? Please call 634-1800 during regular hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. After hours, please call the after-hours emergency number at 634- 3770. The after hour calls are directed to an answering service who will forward calls to the appropriate persons. As well, Estevan Police Services monitor the streets after hours and will request that the intersections be sanded or trouble areas be cleared. How does the City determine what streets get cleaned first? The City classifies the streets into 3 priorities: Priority 1 – Arterial Streets Streets with high volumes of traffic and main routes through and around the City such as 4th Street – average daily traffic volume of more than 8,000. Priority 2 – Collector Roads Streets with somewhat lesser volumes of traffic and designed to route traffic from local streets to the Arterial Streets such as Nicholson Road – average daily traffic of between 1,000 and 8,000. Priority 3 – Local Streets Streets that generally only serve the people that live in that area with low volumes of traffic and mostly residential – less than 1,000 average daily traffic volume. Within Priority Three there are some streets that are extremely narrow and have to be windrowed and transported away in the same day such as Grundeen Crescent.

Will the City complete some areas more than once in a major snowfall before all streets are completed? Yes, if the Priority 1 and 2 become impassable those streets would be cleared of snow again to ensure that traffic can move. Can home owners blow snow from their sidewalks, driveways and parking lots into streets? No, property owners cannot as it makes it more difficult for the city to complete a proper cleanup; it causes the streets to be rougher than necessary, causes a hazard to motorists and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. The only place this is permitted is the downtown business district as they have nowhere else to shovel the snow to. Should we keep our sidewalks clear of snow? Yes, the Traffic Bylaw requires it as it makes it safer for pedestrians and those people that have to walk on the streets for work purposes such as letter carriers and meter readers. Also please make sure that extension cords crossing sidewalks to vehicles do not create trip hazards. Can we pile snow from the sidewalks on the streets? No, the only place this is allowed is the downtown business district as these buildings do not have any other area to move the snow to. Can home and business owners pile snow on their own private properties adjacent to alleys and streets? Yes, however make sure that the piles are not so high as to create a blind corner limiting visibility for pedestrians and motorist Can home and business owners pile snow on existing windrows? No, this creates visibility and driving hazards, makes it more difficult and time consuming to remove the windrows and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. Can snow be piled in city alleys and streets? No this eliminates access for garbage collection, fire protection and other emergency services and is prohibited by the Traffic Bylaw. However it is permitted in cul-de-sacs as long as the snow is piled in the centre of the cul-de-sac only as other piles of snow impact neighbors and makes snow removal more difficult. Can I park my spare vehicle or Motor Home on the Street? Yes, however vehicles are not permitted to be parked

on any streets in excess of 24 hours and cause a lot of problems for snow removal and traffic. Can I park on the streets for less than 24 hours? Yes, however in the event of a major snowstorm we ask that all vehicles be parked in driveways or other areas where possible. In the event of a Major snowstorm the City plans to have all areas windrowed where required as soon as possible, providing equipment is operational. Please do not park your vehicles on the streets if possible as the vehicles access for snow removal equipment and have greater potential of being damaged by other vehicles and equipment. When are City snow dump areas used? The City Snow dump sites are operational from 6am – 10pm, city equipment does not operate at these locations outside of these hours. The City also asks that:

• Children are kept away from snow dump sites and piles. These are dangerous areas when equipment is working, as well as voids in the piles may collapse trapping children. • Please keep clear of snow clearing equipment and crews. If possible choose an alternate route to avoid delays. • Please keep back 20m of Sanding equipment, as they will be discharging sand at intersections of streets, lanes, and high traffic zones. • Please keep all emergency exits buildings clear of snow and ice. Your cooperation and patience is greatly appreciated. BYLAW ENFORCEMENT WILL BE ISSUING TICKETS FOR INFRACTIONS.

By Samantha Mazzotta Stainless Steel Marred by Stain Q: I have a stain in my “stainless” steel sink. It’s a water stain around the edge of the drain. I have a water softener, but that didn’t prevent it. What will clean this up? And why do they call it stainless anyway? I want it to look like new. -- Linda M., Silver Spring, Nev. A: Stainless steel is a metal alloy (meaning two or more metals blended to create a new type of metal -- think brass, for example, which is an alloy of copper and bronze). In this case, stainless steel sinks are an alloy of iron and chromium. It’s durable and resists stains. The surface of these sinks is often coated with a little extra layer of chromium to make a tough and shiny oxide surface. If this coating wears off, through age or lots of abrasive scrubbing, rust and water stains can become a problem. Try a home remedy first to see if the stain will come up. Pour undiluted

white vinegar on a lint-free cloth and dab it onto the water stain. Let it soak for an hour and then wipe the vinegar away, to see if it lifts the mineral deposit with it. You might also try mixing a paste of baking soda, hot water and vinegar and applying a thick layer over the stain with a cloth or nylon brush. Again, let it soak and wipe or rinse the paste away.

Additionally, I’ve never tried this, but some people swear by club soda. Just dab it in the stain and let it soak for a while. The next step is to purchase a stainless-steel cleaning solution (and specifically, a solution for cleaning stainless steel). Follow the directions on the bottle to clean the stain. HOME TIP: To maintain stainless steel, don’t scrub with abrasive sponges or cleaners. To keep a sink

Arrange one fourth of noodles over sauce, overlapping noodles and breaking into large pieces to cover as much sauce as possible. Spoon about 3/4 cup sauce over noodles, then top with one third of ricotta (about 1/2 cup), and 1/2 cup shredded cheese. Spread half of spinach over cheese. 3. Repeat layering 2 more times beginning with noodles, but in middle layer, replace spinach with frozen crumbles. Place remaining noodles over spinach, then top with remaining sauce and shredded cheese. 4. Cover slow cooker with lid and cook as manu-

H O L LY W O O D - - I f you don’t know who Miley Cyrus or “Hanna Montana” is, and you escaped the much-ado-about-nothing scandals over her sexy coming-of-age photos that parents thought were too racy, then you might not understand why she is doing everything she can, as most girls growing up do, to be taken seriously as a young woman. She has been pushing the envelope in her movies and music videos, deliberately tearing the lid off her career. Her new film is called “LOL” (in case you’re not up on computer

lingo, that means Laughing Out Loud), the title of the original 2008 French film it is based on. Demi Moore and “Twilight’s” Ashley Green co-star. Miley will follow that with ... what else? ... a coming-of-age comedy, “So Undercover,” in which she plays ... are you ready? ... a private investigator hired by the FBI to go undercover in a college sorority. Just as Arnold Schwarzenegger leaves office as governor of California, there comes word that “Conan the Barbarian” is coming back. While the original film had Arnold

and three great actors, James Earl Jones, Mako and Max Von Sydow, and was shown wide-screen, a big deal in 1982, this remake will star Jason Momoa (no, I never heard of him either), but it will be in 3D. I guess that will have to make up for the lack of star power! Jack Allan Allocco, who won five Emmy Awards (out of 16 nominations) for writing songs and music for daytime’s “The Young and The Restless” and “The Bold and The Beautiful,” created a song for a recent episode of “B&B,” “Angels In the

As soon as they figure out who owes him the money and get through the appeals process, he might be able to tune out all those people who said he’d never make a comeback in show business -- because now he won’t have to!
