Fairlight Grazing Demonstration Lorne Klein, PAg Regional Forage Specialist, Weyburn Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture A parcel of land at Fairlight, Saskatchewan was seeded to perennial forage to demonstrate the inclusion of non-bloating legumes (sainfoin and cicer milkvetch) in pasture mixtures containing alfalfa. The fields are also being used to demonstrate the differences in forage production comparing “moderate” and “heavy” grazing. Two mixtures were seeded on separate parcels: 1) sainfoin, alfalfa, meadow bromegrass and 2) cicer milkvetch, alfalfa, meadow bromegrass. The seeding rates (lbs/acre) were: sainfoin 10, cicer milkvetch 3, alfalfa 0.5, meadow bromegrass 5.
The management for moderate grazing paddocks was a twice-over grazing system. Generally the first pass started when growth was 12-18 inches tall, and removed about 50-60 per cent of the vegetation. The second pass started when regrowth was 12-18 inches tall, and removed 50-60 per cent of the vegetation. The duration of each pass was 5-10 days. There was no grazing after Sept. 1 to allow for plant growth and root replenishment prior to winter. The management for heavy grazing paddocks simulated continuous season-long grazing where the vegetation was kept to a height of 6 inches or less. These paddocks had rest periods, but the rest periods were relatively short and insufficient for plant recovery and root
replenishment. At the end of the growing season, the majority of the vegetation was removed with grazing. The grazing treatments were applied 2010 – 2012. In 2010, a visual estimation of species composition in the “sainfoin” mixture was 25 per cent sainfoin, 50 per cent alfalfa, 25 per cent meadow bromegrass. After 3 years in the moderate grazed paddock, the species composition appears about the same. After 3 years in the heavy grazed paddock, there is a noticeable shift with lesser legumes replaced by weedy species including dandelions and thistles. Weedy species are estimated at 15-20 per cent of biomass production. In 2010, a visual estimation of species composition in the “cicer milkvetch” mixture was 20 per cent cicer, 50 per
cent alfalfa, 30 per cent meadow bromegrass. After 3 years in the moderate grazed paddock, the cicer milkvetch appears to have increased to about 30 per cent of the stand. After 3 years in the heavy grazed paddock, there is a noticeable shift with lesser legumes replaced by weedy species making up about 15-20 per cent of biomass production. After three years of grazing treatments the forage dry matter yield reductions from moderate to heavy grazing were 38 per cent on the sainfoin mixture and 46 per cent on the cicer milkvetch mixture. On the sainfoin mixture, protein was 1.5 percentage points lower on the heavy grazed paddock. This may be partially explained by the reduction of legumes and increase
in weed population. On the cicer mixture, protein was 1.9 percentage points higher on the heavy grazed paddock. This may be partially explained as yields are reduced, forage quality tends to increase. On both mixtures, the percent energy increased on the heavy grazed paddocks. This may be partially explained as yields are reduced, nutrients become more concentrated in the plants. Also, the plants were less developed and more vegetative at clipping. Conclusion After three years of grazing treatments, the reduction in forage yield from moderate to heavy grazing is quite significant. Although the quality of forage tends to increase with heavy grazing, this gain is relatively small compared to the yield
loss and invasion of weed species. There were no cases of bloat during grazing of the paddocks. With this project design, there is no certainty that the inclusion of sainfoin or cicer milkvetch did indeed prevent bloat cases. However, the grazing of non-bloating legumes along with alfalfa can only help to reduce the risk. This project demonstrated that sainfoin and cicer milkvetch are viable forage options to include in a pasture mixture and are relatively grazing tolerant when management allows for adequate rest periods during the growing season. Energy City is fueled with community support
The city of Estevan came together last weekend and did something that perplexes me, even now. By some miracle, over $340,000 was raised in a span of 33 hours during the United Way Estevan Annual Telethon. Is it a miracle, however? According to history it isn’t. The United Way in Estevan has sat proudly at the number one spot in the nation for years when it comes to reaching its fundraising goal first. Number one? As in, the first out of over 100 United Way branches in Canada? That is an incredible achievement, especially when you analyze the fact that a telethon is the fundraising method being used to raise that money. Looking at it from a distance, a telethon is risky. Like, really risky. You have to make sure people know about it well ahead of time and are invested in the idea. Cable companies have to be on board to televise the entire event and entertainment has to be arranged. A seemingly overwhelming amount of work has to be put into an event that easily warrant several days of operation
You might be from Saskatchewan if...

Writing Prevents That Sinking Feeling but in reality, zips past us in just over a day. Even the larger cities, with all their resources, malls and parking spots, sit back in bewilderment, realizing what we do cannot be mimicked. Where else could that much entertainment be amassed? Entertainment let me remind you, that is volunteer-based. We don’t have high-profile celebrities either, so how on earth do people get invested? A city certainly won’t have a kindergarten class stand in the spotlight for a performance that is televised and viewed by potentially thousands of people. But if you were at the Legion last weekend, then you understand the infectious joy that engulfed the room every single minute of those 33 hours, no matter who was on stage or being interviewed. At some point you
realized this risky telethon concept is something that not only works, but reflects this city’s vigorous personality, augmented each time a donation was announced, whether it was $100 from that kindergarten class that just performed, or $100,000 from one of the cemented businesses in the community. The only other similar event is, of course, the Kinsmen Telemiracle, which garners huge support as well. I don’t want to turn this into a stick-measuring affair, but even United Way in Weyburn, a community that also participates in a telethon and raises astronomical amounts of money each year, doesn’t come close to Estevan’s fundraising goals, which is double that of our neighbours. To so many people in Estevan, this is something
Excerpt from You Might be from Saskatchewan if… Volume 2 by Carson Demmans and Jason Sylverstre. that they’re used to. I come from a small town in Ontario that dons a prettier exterior with lots of green space, fancy light posts and flower baskets dotting the roads at each of the town’s entrances, but has only a fraction of Estevan’s community spirit. Therefore, I remain shocked and amazed during events like
the telethon, a food drive, any and all fundraising initiatives for a multitude of good causes because they are so successful. I look forward to seeing this city flourish when the people of this community need to come together to do something amazing once again, which in all honesty, happens nearly every day.
World Food Day’s message more vital each year When you are in the journalism business it’s an unusual day when there are not a few emails in the computer inbox pertaining to the sector. The releases can range from a machinery company coming up with an air seeder 20-feet wider than the previous year’s model, to something about an insect problem in a vegetable crop in Ontario. It’s part of the business to glean through the pile and toss away the chaff. It’s not to say a wide air seeder is not of interest to readers, but that is something a company should be buying an advertisement to promote. A bug in Ontario is of interest there, but less so to readers here. Then along comes a release from the National Farmers Union on World Food Day, and you suddenly are surprised there are not a dozen organizations using the opportunity to voice the importance of the message behind the day. World Food Day (WFD) was founded by the United Nations’ (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1945, and has been observed annually, every October 16, since 1981. The event was established to increase
Calvin Daniels Trader Agriculture Columnist awareness of world hunger and poverty and to inspire solutions for world change. The message about hunger and poverty and how to solve the problems are certainly worthwhile goals. And the seriousness of the situation and the challenges in effecting change are obvious when one considers the day was found 60-years ago, with the day observed since 1981, and yet hunger and poverty persist. The NFU release suggested, “farmers understand the relationship between food and hunger uniquely and very well as the primary producers of food products.” I would suggest while farmers grow food, they have no better understanding of the reasons for hunger than anyone else. World hunger is not generally a food pro-
duction problem. Farmers around the world can still produce what we need. The issues are economic ones. The question is how we raise the economic situation of the world’s poor, from those in Third World countries with meager national economies, to street people in Los Angeles and Toronto, to the point they can afford to buy the food they need. And if that massive issue could ever be conquered, the focus would need to turn to how to deal with the politics of world trade, and the infrastructure of trade movement to ensure food could get to everyone in need. As it stands, getting a bag of flour from Canada to a remote African village is an issue because of transportation and unstable or bickering governments all along the way. The issues are massive, and may actually be worse today than in 1945 when World Food Day was initiated based on an ever-growing world population. That means the message of WFD is even more critical today, and is one the world community should be focusing the utmost attention on in dealing with.

CUPE representatives stepped up on Oct. 16 to help with flood relief efforts in Gainsborough, which was affected by the recent flooding, including the hospital. CUPE Saskatchewan, CUPE Health Care Council and CUPE National teamed up to donate $8,000 to the South Saskatchewan Flood Relief. Representatives of the organization were on hand to accept the cheque. “Over 29,000 CUPE members across this province stand with the families of Gainsborough that have had to deal with the destruction of flooding,” said Tom Graham, President of CUPE Saskatchewan. Many CUPE members in the region were also impacted, and the union is involved with the campaign to help families. CUPE Local 5999 represents health care workers at Sun Country Health Authority and has offered financial support and volunteer time to help with flood relief efforts. It raised over $2,000 for flood relief.

Prime Minister speaks with NDP, Liberal leaders in display of cross-partisanship OTTAWA - In the shadow of Wednesday’s attack on Parliament Hill, Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke with NDP Leader Tom Mulcair and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau in a rare show of cross-partisanship. The calls were prompted by the deadly shootings that claimed the life of a Canadian soldier, injured three others and paralyzed
Ottawa’s downtown for most of the day. Oddly, none of the three leaders have yet spoken publicly about the incident, which also left a gunman dead inside the Centre Block. Harper’s office said facts were still being gathered but that the prime minister would make a statement later in the day.
“The prime minister was thankful that Mr. Mulcair and Mr Trudeau are safe,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement. “The prime minister reiterated the importance of the continued functioning of the government and our Parliament.” His spokesman later said that said Harper was briefed by security officials
at a location away from Parliament Hill. Harper has also spoken with U.S. President Barack
Obama. The whereabouts of Mulcair and Trudeau was unclear.
Mulcair’s spokesperson said he would comment later Wednesday; → Page 14

lockdown in the parliamentary cafeteria. He offered Harper his party’s absolute support in solving the current situation and preventing future ones, a spokesperson said. “Canadians are a resilient people who treasure our freedom,” Kate Purchase said in a statement. “We cannot and will not allow armed criminals to terrorize our country and our democracy.”

Women In Business Week
What it means to be a small business Small Business week is a national celebration of Canadian entrepreneurs and their contribution to Canada’s economy. Cactus Autobody in Estevan, one of the many small businesses in Estevan, has been operating for nearly 15 years now. Lance Mack sat down with us to talk about what it means to run a small business and how it differs from operating in a big city. What are the services you provide for customers? Mack: Well, if you get in an accident and smash your car up, we’ll do all the bodywork repairs. We’ll do some of the suspension, but some of that we’ll sublet along with mechanical work. We don’t do mechanical because some of our customers own mechanic shops and we don’t want to step on their toes. How important is it to, like you said, ‘not step on their toes?’ Mack: It’s really important. Our relationship with those businesses is very good, and those running the businesses are very good people. Estevan is a small community, so you know most of those people. Maintaining those relationships with other business owners and customers is helps us a lot. Cheryl Farr (Bookkeeper): People often drop in and our guys in the back will drop whatever they’re doing and take a look at the problem, see what they can do with it. I see these guys working every day and there’s no such thing as an eight-hour day. You have to be dedicated.
Lance Mack, has worked in Estevan for 14 years and says the small business industry can change rapidly but is a gratifying experience.
Ed Komarnicki, MP Souris-Moose Mountain Congratulations and thank you to all small business owners in Souris-Moose Mountain for contributing to the growth of our economy and for your commitment to local communities.

Women In Business Week
What is your advice for anyone looking to enter the small business market?
Mack: You need to have some money in the bank to hold you through the slow times or when receivables aren’t coming in quick enough. There’s a lot of costs hidden in small businesses. Everyone thinks the business makes so much money but you got a lot of overhead. Your taxes, any business payments you have, wages, benefits. You’re not going to make all the money in the world early on. You need to have good material, good suppliers and reliable employees. You also have to remember that you cannot give out deals. You have your shop rate and if you keep giving deals you won’t be in business for long, especially in a small community. Gotta stick to the shop rate. What’s the best part about working in a small business? Mack: Helping people. A lot of people will compliment us on our work, which always feels good. Farr: Developing a relationship with customers and giving them that reassurance that we’re doing the best job that we can and that their vehicle is going to get fixed is important to us. Every customer that comes in is a special moment for us because they come in sad and upset, but leave smiling. Mack: People are upset when they get in an accident especially when it’s not their fault. You just have to try and help them as much as you can.

Hours Of CRUDE Operation OIL
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford made attempts to buy the video of him smoking crack cocaine, and also allegedly used heroin in April of this year, according to newly released police wiretap documents. Police earlier this year listened to a conversation between two alleged drug dealers, in which they discussed being offered $5,000 — and a car — in exchange for a video. Police believe the men were describing an offer from Ford. The phone call took place on March 27, some two months before reports first surfaced of a video that purported to show Ford smoking crack cocaine. Following those reports, Ford insisted no such video existed. Also on the wiretaps is a conversation in the early hours of April 20, 2013, about Ford using marijuana and heroin. A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-laden car at Yemen’s Defence Ministry, killing 18 soldiers and wounding at least 40. The attack reinforces the persistent threat to the stability and security of the impoverished Arab nation. As many as 12 gunmen also were killed in a firefight between troops and a carload of attackers who arrived minutes after the early morning blast. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which bore the hallmarks of al-Qaeda, whose chapter in Yemen is considered among the world’s most active. The blast badly damaged a hospital inside the complex, started a fire, and blew out windows and the doors of homes and offices in the immediate vicinity. An armoured vehicle belonging to the army was destroyed.
