Jackie Gleason Comics Q: I have four Jackie Gleason and the Honeymooners comics, which were issued during the 1950s during the run of the hit TV show. I suspect they might be worth a few bucks. What do you think? -- Bill, Canandaigua, N.Y. A: The series was published in June and July of 1956 by DC comics. Now for the drum roll. The first in the series is valued at $1,300 by the Standard Guide to Golden Age Comics by Alex G. Malloy and Stuart W. Wells III (Krause). The second is worth $700 and the other 10 are in the $500 to $600 range. *** Q: I have a clock that is marked Royal Bonn. I am more curious about the manufacturer than I am the potential value of the clock, since it is an heirloom and I have no plans to sell. -- Beth, Santa Fe, N.M. A: I had a difficult time tracking down any information about Royal Bonn but did eventually find a few facts in Kovels’ Antiques and Collectibles by Ralph and Terry Kovel (Random House Reference). Royal Bonn is the 19th and 20th century trade name used by Franz Anton Mehlem, who operated a pottery firm in Bonn, Germany, which began in 1836 and continued until 1931. According to the Kovels, the factory was purchased by Villeroy & Boch in 1921 and closed a decade later. Nine clocks are valued in Kovels’ guide ranging in price from $168 to $3,250. *** Q: I have a copy of “A New Gazetteer or Geographical Dictionary of North America and the West Indies” by Bishop Davenport. What is it worth?

-- Marvin, Willmar, Minn. A: The original edition of Bishop Davenport’s book was published in 1833 and has recently been reissued. In order to determine if you have a first, early or modern edition, you should contact a competent book dealer. The reprint sells for about $25. *** Q: I have about 1,500 Hallmark lapel pins, some extremely old. Where can I find current values? -Karen, Dundalt, Md. A: Check out www. beardencreations.com/terrishallmark/lp.html for values. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox is unable to personally answer all reader questions. I always think of the splitting of the atom. On one hand it created a technology capable of generating power, and of healing, while on the other side it created weapons of mass destruction and death. So science is what it is, and how we use it is what is important. With crop biotechnology, the potential of the science is simply too enticing not to pursue. We have seen how the science has fundamentally changed the canola industry, and few would argue the changes haven’t been positive. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be growing impatient with a situation that seems to resist efforts to resolve it. But staying with it raises the odds that you’ll find a way to a successful resolution. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Travel and kinship are strong in the Bovine’s aspect this week. This would be a good time to combine the two and take a trip to see family members for a pre-holiday get-together. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A colleague could make a request you’re not comfortable with. If so, say so. Better to disappoint someone by sticking with your principles than disappoint yourself if you don’t. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The Moon Child’s ability to adapt to life’s ebbs and flows helps you deal with the changes that you might confront at work or at home, or both. Things settle down by the week’s end. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s a good week for Leos and Leonas to get some long-outstanding business matters resolved. Then go ahead and plan a fun-filled family getaway weekend with the mate and the cubs. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A possible workplace change seems promising. If you decide to look into it, try not to form an opinion on just a small part of the picture: Wait for the full image to develop. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A newcomer helps keep things moving. There might be some bumpy moments along the way, but at least you’re heading in the right direction. You win praise for your choices. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You could be pleasantly surprised by how a decision about one thing opens up an unexpected new option. Also, assistance on a project could come from a surprising source. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) With more information to work with, you might now be able to start the process that could lead to a major change. Reserve the weekend for family and friends. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This could be a good time to begin gathering information that will help you turn that long-held idea into something substantive. A personal matter might need

extra attention. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) That new challenge might carry some surprises. But you should be able to handle them using what you already know. That new supporter should be there to lend as-

But the perceptive and perspicacious Pisces should have little or no problem finding the truth in all that foggy rhetoric. Tips To Make Home Improvements Safer And Easier Homeowners are increasingly hands-on when it comes to improving their homes. While it was once commonplace to call a contractor to do household repairs and renovations, nowadays more and more homeowners act as their own handyman. Though often more affordable and rewarding, it is also more risky for homeowners to tackle projects themselves. Accidents are more likely to occur when a weekend warrior rather than a trained professional does the work. To help doit-yourselfers work safely, Woodcraft offers the following tips. Be Prepared Even the most seasoned DIYers get hurt from time to time, but being prepared for an unexpected accident is the key to avoiding a tragedy. “A fully-stocked first aid kit is a must for every

homeowner and DIYer,” says home expert Danny Lipford who is host of the nationally-syndicated TV show, Today’s Homeowner, and radio show, Homefront. “Always have it handy wherever you’re working. You’ll be surprised at how often you’ll need it. Plus, periodically check the kit and restock those items that are getting low.” It is also important to have a charged, portable or cellular phone within arm’s reach at all times. While it’s best to work with a partner, that’s not always possible. Earlier this year, a Connecticut man’s arm got stuck while he was mending a boiler. Trapped for two days, he eventually cut off his arm to save himself. Access to a phone might have saved his arm. Select User-Friendly Products

Inexperienced amateurs often struggle because they choose the wrong tools or risk injury by using unfamiliar tools. “The right tools make a job so much easier,” Lipford adds. “Plus, they’re safer to use because if you’re using a tool not intended for the task, you increase your risk of injury. If you don’t own the tool, consider renting it, particularly if it’s relatively expensive and you plan to use it infrequently.” Choose easy-touse products that promote safety, such as the Youngstown Glove Company’s Anti Vibration Glove. The glove dampens shock and vibration, making it ideal for use with medium-to-large motorized tools, including chainsaws, weed eaters, edge trimmers, and

more. With a unique wrist wrap designed to provide support and relieve arm tension, the glove ensures that homeowners won’t

weaken during a project. What’s more, the extensive nonslip reinforcement on palm, fingers and thumb provides added grip to reduce the risk of injury, and the terry cloth thumb for wiping sweat and debris keeps workers focused.

The Kreg Deck Jig System offers an easy, safe way to create a beautiful, functional deck surface free of exposed fasteners and painful splinters. The jig’s easy grip handle provides a secure hold and total control over every joint as the jig creates an incredibly strong wood-towood bond using precisely placed self-tapping screws. Three separate drill guides enable the deck builder to work like a pro to install deck boards, even in the hardest-to-reach areas. Finish Without A Mishap Many home improve-

ment accidents occur when it appears a project is completed. As homeowners confidently step back and admire their handiwork or resolve to clean up later, the risk of an accident increases. To be safe, step carefully and immediately put your work area in order, making sure tools are turned off. For extra protection, use a SafeStart Systems SafetyGate(TM) Professional. It employs patented sensor technology that recognizes when tools are accidentally left on. An illuminated yellow LED light indicates when items are on but not in use, and a protective “gate” stops the flow of electricity, keeping tools from restarting while homeowners are away or otherwise occupied. Compatible with electric tools and home appliances, the SafetyGate is ideal for parents with young children.

Home Comfort Center Whether you live in Tornado Alley, a hurricane zone or the snow-saturated northeast, it’s essential to have a durable roof overhead to protect your family and valuables. “Being safe and secure comes as a result of selecting the right building products for your home,” says Ray Rosewall, president and CEO of DaVinci Roofscapes(R). “There were 1,156 tornados recorded in 2009 nationwide plus countless hail storms resulting from severe weather. The force of hail hitting a roof that has a low impact rating can destroy it within minutes. “If you live in an area prone to severe weather, then you need to seriously consider investing in an impact-resistant synthetic roof to protect your home.” Standard slate and shingle style roofing tiles manufactured by DaVinci are Class 4 impact rated, meeting the UL 2218 Impact Test. “Average-sized hail stones literally bounce off

these roofing tiles,” says Rosewall. In addition to resisting major impacts, the ecofriendly roofing tiles are fire resistant. This helps protect a home from the spread of wildfires and can help lower homeowner

Did you know renters have options? Renters may feel they have limited options when it comes to making changes around their apartment. In many cases, modifications to the space are governed by what the landlord

will allow and what is stated in the tenant’s lease. Renters may be able to make minor renovations and changes to the space. This can include patching and painting walls in a

neutral color, or white if the landlord prefers. If the carpeting is in bad shape, it may be able to be steamcleaned or replaced. The renter may do so at his or her expense, or a portion of the renovation may be

covered by the landlord. It is always adviseable to consult with the landlord before beginning any project. He or she may handle the repair or change or set the ground rules for modifications to the space. The

landlord also may have a set list of contractors or repair persons contracted to provide the work. The changing of light fixtures may be allowed, while removal of walls, changing countertops or cabinets, or

otherlarge-scale renovations are likely off limits. Accessorizing the space with bold colors in draperies, furniture and throw rugs can help personalize an apartment where renovations are limited.

Improve Water Pressure For those who have turned on a faucet to find a trickle or bathed under something more like a drip sprinkler than a shower, water pressure might be the culprit. Inadequate water pressure can be a nuisance. Remedying it could take a quick fix or a major overhaul. There are many reasons for low water pressure. Diagnosing the problem is the key to fixing it. Here are some causes to consider. * Rural areas that rely on well water may have less pounds of water pressure than in suburban or city areas. * Water softeners or filters in homes can reduce water pressure. * Multi-level homes could experience a drop in water pressure in upstairs bathrooms. That’s because, for every 2.31 feet of vertical climb in a water line, a homeowner will lose a pound of water pressure. Water that originates in the basement and must travel upstairs could decrease by 12 pounds of pressure by the time it arrives at a third-floor bathroom. * Clogged pipes or fixtures can reduce water pressure. Pipes that are also too small in diameter to meet the house water needs could also be to blame. * Water restrictors in showerheads and other fixtures can reduce water flow in an effort to conserve the natural resource. Homeowners can insert a gauge at the main water supply of the house to determine the pressure of the water at the source. This will help determine if the problem lies outside of the home or inside. Some water pressure issues have easy fixes. Simply cleaning the screen on faucets or showerheads can remove debris and improve water flow. Purchasing fixtures that do not additionally restrict water flow can also alleviate the problem. Some homes have various valves installed in the plumbing system so that a leak or problem can be isolated and turned off. However, the wrong types of valves can impede water pressure. It can be well worth the expense to have a professional plumber to investigate home water pressure issues and recommend solutions. It may be simpler than one thinks.

Make Gutter Cleaning Safer and Easier Nobody enjoys gutter cleaning. Yet it’s much more important than many homeowners think. Rain flowing over windows, doors, and siding can rot fascia as well as door and window framing. It can erode the soil around your home and damage its foundation, and also cause a wet basement, mold, and mildew. To help keep gutters operating properly and to protect your investment, try these tips: 1. Think Safety First. Always use a solid, quality ladder to reach your gutters. Safety glasses and gloves are a good idea, too. And watch out for power lines. 2. Use the Right Tools for the Job. In addition to needing something to contain gutter debris, you’ll also need a tool to scoop it out. The Gutter Getter Scoop from Working Products, Inc. is a good option. It’s the

only flexible scoop shaped to fit all gutters, plus it will keep your hands away from the debris. 3. Don’t Overreach. Over-reaching can destabilize your ladder and cause you to fall. Instead, consider using a special tool to extend your reach. The Gutter Grabber is a cleaning tool on an extension pole that lets you clean up to 18 feet of gutter without moving your ladder. 4. Check the Downspouts, Too. If the spout is clogged, a coat hanger or the handle of your Gutter Grabber can help get the debris out of the spout. Then, use a garden hose to flush out

any remaining debris. For stubborn clogs, it may be necessary to remove the downspout and back flush it with the hose. Covering your downspout with a strainer such as the Gutter

Getter Big Top Downspout Strainer will help reduce future clogging, too. 5. Clean Gutters Anytime They Need It. Most

homeowners know they need to clean their gutters in the fall. But once you understand the importance of gutters, you’ll know why

its vital to clean them out anytime they get full. To protect the value of your home, keep your gutters clean throughout the year.

Converting That Empty Nest Homeowners who have spent many years in one home likely raised a family and shared many memories inside of those walls. When the kids grow and move on it can be somewhat bittersweet. Being left with vacated rooms -- especially ones still decked out in children’s decor -- can cause the house to feel more empty than it has to be. Now is the time to turn those empty rooms into adult spaces. H o m e o w n e r s shouldn’t feel guilty about taking down band posters and packing away Little League baseball caps. Chances are the children made good use of their rooms and now it’s time for the adults to reclaim the spaces for their very own. There are easy ways to turn children’s bedrooms into spaces adults can enjoy. With a few fixes, the

room can be a man’s space, a woman’s retreat, or a room both can enjoy. Because the room will reflect the adult homeowners’ interests, it should be designed with their needs in mind. Comfortable furniture and items that

please the residents should be incorporated. Lighting should be used to set the mood. If the room will be used for

10103TS00

television watching, have dimmer switches so that the brightness can be tuned down. For reading or office work, have overhead lights and task lighting, such as a desk lamp. For the “man cave” the room can reflect interests, such as sports or fishing, but be decorated in a subtle way to complement the rest of the home’s decor. For example, if a guy likes a sports team, he can paint the walls in a subdued shade of the team colors instead of hanging pennants or player jerseys on the walls. Homeowners should remember to include extra seating and space so that they can entertain friends or family in their newly adapted specialized rooms. A table for snacks or even a small refrigerator hidden within a decorative piece of furniture can keep snacks and beverages available.

Spooktacular Candles Light Up Halloween Invite a ghost, a monster and a smiling pumpkin into your home this month with this super-easy and, yes, just a little messy, rainy-day craft project that kids and adults of all ages will enjoy. You’ll be repurposing old vases and tossed jars from your recycle bin, cutting up colorful tissue paper and messing around with lots of sticky glue to create spooky “stained-glass look” votive candleholders that will brighten and bring living color to your Halloween decor. When the glue has dried, line ‘em up and light ‘em up to welcome a spooktacular Halloween holiday spirit at your house. Here’s the stuff you’ll need: --Tissue paper in black and in bright, traditional Halloween colors such as orange,

lime green and purple. --Empty, medium-size clear glass pasta or pickle jars with labels removed, old wide-mouth vases and even fish bowls that are collecting dust and ready to be repurposed. --Household white glue such as Elmer’s all-purpose white glue. --Small bowl. --Paintbrush and scissors. Here’s the fun: Cut the plain-color tissue paper into 1-inch squares, triangles and rectangles. Older kids and adults may use the black tissue for cutting specific shapes for the features of a Halloween character, such as circles for the eyes and mouth of a white tissue-paper ghost. Or the zigzag mouth and triangle-shape eyes and nose of an orange pumpkin. Squeeze white household glue into the small bowl and dilute with a few drops

of water. Brush a light coat of the glue mixture on the outside of the glass container. In an overlapping pattern, apply the tissue shapes over the glue, applying the background colored shapes first. Smooth out each piece with your fingers as you go along. When working with young children, you might want to apply glue to the glass a section at a time, so fingers don’t get too gooey to handle the paper. When the outside of the glass is covered, apply another coating or two of the glue mixture over all of the tissue paper. Let dry for several hours. When dry, the tissue paper will look bright and colorful once again. Set a battery-operated votive candle inside and display on a windowsill or use as a table centerpiece at a Halloween party. *** Donna Erickson’s awardwinning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Removal of lymphatics can produce swelling of the arm, as the fluid cannot find its way back to the circulation. Pressure from the
