ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your moodier side might emerge this week. But the dark period should pass in time for the party-loving Lamb to go on a happy gambol with some very special people this weekend. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Yet again, you show your skill at being able to indulge in your love of the arts this week while still taking care of practical matters, including some still-unfinished business matters. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A potential change might appear to be what you’ve been looking for. In any event, consider both the negative as well as the positive possibilities before making any sort of decision. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Relationships continue to dominate your aspect this week on a mostly positive level, with just a few problem areas you can smooth over. Also, try to be flexible about travel plans. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You love being on center stage, and while you absolutely purr at the sound of all that praise, be careful not to take on too many commitments at the expense of time spent with loved ones. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might feel that you need to get involved in a matter con-

cerning a friend or relative. But while the issues appear to be cut and dried, they might not be. Get more facts before you act. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A suggestion about a policy change could create heated reactions. Keep your mind open and resist joining in with naysayers unless they can show a real basis for their position. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While potential career changes

warrant your interest, don’t ignore current job responsibilities. A personal relationship can also benefit from more of your attention. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Don’t guess at what the facts might be if you hope to make the best decision possible. The wise course is to ask direct questions and act on the answers you get. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your efforts involving that pesky problem should soon show positive signs of being resolved. This would allow you to shift some of your focus in another direction. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) While

you enjoy well-deserved praise for getting a difficult job done, there’s no time to relax. A new challenge looms. Expect more support from a once-strong critic. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still have explaining to do about your decision, but support grows as you continue to make your case. You also might want to start making plans for the upcoming holidays. BORN THIS WEEK: You insist on making decisions based on facts, not on popular opinions. Have you considered a career in science?

Money Problems? • “Before you wash a load of towels, dampen one and use it to wipe down the sides and top of your washer and dryer. Then just toss the towel in with the load. • Got kids and need a new sofa? Look for fabrics that clean up with soap and water. Upholstery that has subtle color changes or is woven or textured will hide stains; napped fabric and flat finishes show water spots and wear spots. • For wood floors, make sure you dust-mop regularly. Dirt can scratch up your floors. Use a mop with a head that can be popped into the washer, and do so regularly. • “My children love to read, and if they had it their way, they would have hundreds of books. To keep their interest in reading hot, we use the library, but we also patronize a local usedbook store. They can search the stacks to find favorite authors and subjects, and they turn in books to get credit toward new ones. If they love a book at the library, try to find one at the bookstore to keep.” -- A.C. in Florida

• Great advice that will save you money: Lower the temperature of your water heater to 105 F. It’s hot enough for washing, but not hot enough to scald a small child or sensitive skin. • “Ever since we installed shaker pegs in the kids’ bathroom, the towels get hung up regularly. Perspective Mr. Rodgers’ Neighbourhood Brian Rodgers Estevan Mercury Reporter

That’s all he wrote When I began thinking about how I was going to approach this week’s column, the first thing that came to my mind was, “the world doesn’t need another goodbye article from an exiting reporter.” This is, after all, my final week here in Estevan. When this column hits newsstands, I will be back living in my hometown, Regina. I won’t, however, bore you with too much sentimental stuff in this farewell letter, and I thought it might actually be a good time to spice things up a bit. For the last few weeks I’ve written somewhat scathing commentaries about some things and opinions I disagree with - locally, nationally and internationally. This week, however, I thought I’d be a little more positive. I want to talk about some of the aspects of this city that have made my five months here so enjoyable. (I won’t say anything in this article that you don’t probably already know, but here goes.) It’s a total cliché, but right off the bat, I have to say: the people. After my first week here in the Energy City, I was telling everybody about how friendly and genuinely nice the people of Estevan are. Coming from suburbia (a.k.a. Regina’s east end), it’s sometimes hard to find smiling, happy people. In the supposed hustle and bustle of modern times (with wireless Internet and million-channel satellite TV), it has become very easy for people to throw up walls and immerse themselves in an imaginary sense of self-importance. In Regina, before moving to Estevan, I worked at a grocery store for about three-and-a-half years while I went to university. I’ve seen firsthand how people can, with little to no reason, be downright nasty at times. This isn’t to say that this is just a Regina thing; or a big city thing; or even a modern day thing, necessarily. Nor does it mean that Estevan is some sort of anomaly, where only good exists and there are no nasty people. I’m sure if I worked at a grocery store, or in any retail-type atmosphere here in Estevan, I’d run into a fair share of rude people. But during my time running around, covering different events here in

the city, I met so many warm-hearted, helpful people. A perfect example of this, and one of my favourite memories, came within my first couple of weeks at the newspaper. I had gone out to the Boundary Dam trap range to snap some pictures during the weekend’s trapshooting competition, and was, at first, fairly nervous to say the least. Before that, I don’t even think I’d even been around a loaded gun ever, let alone taken pictures of people shooting them. Had I not been given the assignment, I can’t honestly claim that I would have even given the competition a chance. After a short rain delay, during which I met some of the shooters and became more comfortable with the surroundings, I discovered that, even though we might not have a whole lot in common, they were all really great people. Within an hour, they even let me try my hand at shooting some targets. I wasn’t a very good shot, but it was great fun nonetheless. It is experiences like this, and the hundreds of similarly good-natured people that I met here in Estevan, that will forever remain etched in my memory. These are interesting times in Estevan. The city is growing, the economy is booming, the community’s demographics are ever-changing, even the newspaper has seen some exciting changes during my time here. All I can hope for Estevan, is that it never becomes too big (if you know what I mean). In many ways, Regina is going through a similar growth spurt right now, and I have always seen many similarities between the two cities. But Estevan is unique in that it is still a tight-knit, small city that has an incredible sense of community within its boundaries. In Regina, unless you work right in the core of the city, you might only make a couple of trips downtown a month. In Estevan, you’re never more than a five minute drive from that cozy little strip of shops on Fourth Street, and it’s hard to get anywhere in the city without travelling through downtown. To me, that’s what a city should be. Progress is fine, growth is OK, but big cities - and Regina is becoming one of them - too often focus on spreading outwards, branching off into secluded and/or gated communities and then the people forget about the city’s core; its heartbeat - the downtown. It’s been really cool to see firsthand some of the grassroots, community-building activities that have happened in the city over the past couple of months and years. Football is here to stay - very few things bring a community together like sporting events; the City is working hard to add green spaces, trying to balance out Estevan’s rough and tough image; a priority has, appropriately enough, been put on building up and modernizing the city’s arts and cultural landscape; and these are just a few of the many great things happening here. Estevan, it’s been a great few months living here in your city. Keep doing what you’re doing - I will continue to follow the news and goings-on here in Estevan, no matter where I end up in the future. Thank you, and goodbye Oh, and if you take anything away from this rant, remember this: always be nice to grocery store employees (and newspaper reporters too).

The expectation of farm profit is often difficult to achieve, and I suppose in that regard, the prison farms were not unique. But the idea of profit and operating penitentiaries doesn’t really go hand-in-hand either. Incarcerating criminals is a costly venture, and we all pretty much recognize that. However, a part of those costs is supposed to be associated with rehabilitating those criminals. It was one of those things, which in the grand scheme of news, and So, back to the farm. even in terms of agricultural sector news, sort of slipped under the radar Instilling the skills and the responsibility of doing farm work would as a minor news bite. seem a pretty good step in that rehabilitation. That said, the ongoing closure by the federal government of prison The six prison farms that operated in Canada in 2009 had about 300 farms that are associated with a half dozen federal penitentiaries prisoner workers. Now this in itself might be a message for the Conservative government. Given the intangibles associated with work on prison farms, the need If you have a farm where you are likely accessing labour at costs below for the skills learned, and the original concept of growing their own food what other farmers would be able to, and you are producing for a sales still being valid, the closures seem ill-advised. Cundall wins IPAC-Sask’s Promising New Professional Award Former Estevan Resident, David Cundall, recently picked up a prestigious award at Government House in Regina. On September 16, Cundall was named this year’s recipient of the Institute of Public Administation of Canada’s (IPAC) Promising New Professional Award for Saskatchewan. The award is presented annually to an individual or team with less than five years of experience in public service. According to a press release from IPAC Saskatchewan, the winner of the award must, “demonstrate leadership potential within the public service; demonstrate the ideals and values of public administration; and demonstrate the ability and potential to continue and constantly improve upon the sound work of public administration and public servants in Saskatchewan.” The Lieutenant Governor’s Gold Medal Award - one of the highest levels of recognition for a public servant in the province -

Former Estevan resident David Cundall (right) was recently awarded the IPAC Promising New Professional award. Cundall currently is employed at the Legislature and is also enrolled at the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of Regina where he is working towards a master of public policy degree. Presenting the award is Neil Robertson, president of IPAC-Saskatchewan. was handed out during the ceremony as well. The event is a fairly big deal, to say the least. “It was an amazing experience,” said Cundall, who currently works in the cabinet planning wing of

the provincial government as an assistant research officer. “It’s exciting, but at the same time humbling when you think of the level of public servants that were there. There were a lot of high ranking public servants and

professionals in the room.” Cundall was nominated for the award by his own boss, the associate deputy minister to the premier. Winning the award becomes all the more impressive, when you realize how extensive

the nomination process actually is. “There’s not just one person who nominates you; there has to be two supporting letters of nomination, as well. Then, those three letters of nomination go to a panel of review,” said Cundall. “In Saskatchewan, (the award) is open to anyone who works for either the federal government in the province, the provincial government, or a municipal government. I later found out that if you look at the Saskatchewan provincial government alone, that’s like 4,000 people who are eligible. So, it turned out to be a fairly vigorous process.” Currently, Cundall is working towards a master of public policy degree from the University of Regina’s Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy. Having hands-on experience in the legislature, and now with a prestigious award to go along with his achievements, should prove to be an excellent stepping stone for the 26-year-old, who admits

his interest in politics was sparked during his formative years with his family, who still live in Estevan. “I come from a political family - that was something we always discussed at the dinner table. I’ve always sort of been an armchair politician, so to have experience in both of those areas on a day-to-day basis - to get to see policies developing, and also the political side of things - it’s a pretty awesome experience.” All in all, it’s an exciting time to work in the everchanging public service, Cundall said. “If you look at the public service right now, there’s a lot of people at the top end; a lot of people who, after the recession in 2008, decided not to retire. Then, there’s a lot of people coming in who, like myself, have less than five years of experience; but there’s a big gap between those two groups. It’s a great time to be a part of it because I think you’re going to see a lot of room for a lot of opportunities.”

Nutritionist holds food label reading seminar at EPL Barb Wright, public health nutritionist for the Sun Country Health Region, visited the Estevan Public Library on Tuesday night, to lead a short seminar on what to look for on – and how to read – food nutrition labels. Armed with a booklet, distributed by the Dietitians of Canada and the Canadian Diabetes Association, Wright dissected the average food package, offering explanations for what certain words and eye-catching phrases mean, like “low in fat or “no sugar added, and so on. There are five government-regulated nutrient content claims that can be advertised on a product’s package. These include: free (ie. fat free), low (low sodium), reduced (reduced sugar), source (source of fibre) and light (light in calories). When a product claims it is “low in a certain ingredient, that means there are less than three grams of that particular ingredient per serving size. Serving size was a particular point of focus during the workshop. One can pay all the attention they want to the number of calories or amount of fat in a product, but if they don’t pay attention to – or don’t abide by – the suggested serving size, they may actually be getting more, or fewer nutrients than they realize. So, if you double the suggested serving size, remember you must also double the amount of everything else

displayed in the nutrition facts box. Wright also went through some of the oft-understood words that appear on food labels. The words “saturated fat – fat that comes from animals, butter, coconut oil, etc. – for example, mean the particular fat is likely to raise the levels of bad cholesterol in one’s body, while keeping a fairly steady level of good cholesterol. Trans fat comes from hydrogenated fats and oils and will raise the levels of bad cholesterol, while dropping the levels of good cholesterol, making it the most unhealthy form of fat. Wright pointed out that it is important, when reading the ingredients list for a certain product, to know that the ingredients are listed in order based on their quantity in that food item. The ingredient listed first will be the most prevalent and so on. Perhaps the most important thing to look for in a nutrition facts box, according to Wright, is the amount of fibre in a product. If you have two similar products, with similar nutrition information and want to know which one is better for you, chances are you should pick the one with more fibre in it. For more information on healthy eating, Wright posts tips and helpful hints on the Sun Country Health Region website in a column called, Good Eating Today.

• It was American author and futurist Alvin Toffler who made the following sage observation: “Profits, like sausages, are esteemed most by those who know least about what goes into them.” • In honor of October being National Pizza month, here are a few statistics: Approximately 3 billion pizzas are sold every year in the United States. Seventeen percent of all the restaurants in the country are pizzerias. If you’re like 93 percent of Americans, you eat at least one pizza every month. Pepperoni is the most popular topping, followed by sausage, mushrooms, onions and olives. And a Gallup poll found that kids between the ages of 3 and 11 would choose pizza over any other food for lunch or dinner.

Countdown to Teamwork

On Thursday, Sepember 30th, the Energy Training Institute and Southeast Education Foundation will be providing an exclusive opportunity to learn about leadership from one man’s life experience as a NASA astronaut. Date: Thursday, September 30, 2010 Time: Buffet Lunch: 11:45 am – 12:15 pm Presentation: 12:15 pm – 1:45 pm Question & Answer: 1:45 pm Location: Beefeater Plaza, Estevan

• Are you a dipsomaniac? The root of the word is from the Greek “dipso,” meaning “thirst” -- and we’re all familiar with the “mania” part. “Dipsomaniac” is just a fancy name for a drunk. • You may be surprised to learn that 43 percent of 6- to 9-year-old girls use lip gloss. Of course, if you’re a parent of a young girl, you may not be surprised at all. • A newly married couple sued the upscale resort in Chile where they spent their honeymoon when a swim in the pool turned the bride’s waist-length blond hair green. • The oldest known skis were found, perhaps unsurprisingly, in Scandinavia. The experts say the skis were made about 4,000 years ago.

Colonel (ret.) Mike Mullane’s presentation entitled “Countdown to Teamwork” will, no doubt, be worthwhile to you and your colleagues in leadership positions. Tickets are $60 each or $400 for a corporate table of eight. For more information, please contact the Estevan campus at 634-4795.

A Children’s Hospital in our province has been a dream for many Saskatchewan families for too long. That dream is now one step closer to reality as our government has fulÀlled our commitment of $200 million to the Saskatoon Health Region to construct the Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan. With a Ànal location now selected at the Royal University Hospital, the project can continue to move forward knowing that funding from our government is secured. For generations to come, the Children’s Hospital will provide a safe and comfortable environment for sick children and their families from across the province. The hospital will also be a hub of research, knowledge, and learning for professionals dedicated to children’s health. This signiÀcant funding announcement for the hospital represents another key campaign promise fulÀlled by our government. Every family wants to have reliable doctors in their communities to provide quality and timely care. Our government is working to make that a reality for families across the province. We recently announced a new, improved process that will allow us to better recruit more foreign-trained physicians to Saskatchewan and assess them more efÀciently. The improvements will open up the assessment to International Medical Graduates (IMGs) from around the world as long as they meet the pre-screening criteria, bolstering recruitment by allowing a much wider range of physicians. Other beneÀts of the new assessment process include: • assessing IMGs prior to their work practice, which allows for safer patient care and less disruption in the communities; • having IMGs complete their orientation in Saskatchewan, which will help them adjust to the local community and increase their chances of success; and • the elimination of the current group practice requirement, which means once IMGs successfully pass their assessment, they can go directly to the community they were recruited to and practise independently.

The new assessment process Áows from the government’s physician strategy, introduced last year, which aims to address the physician shortage in Saskatchewan. Another major topic swirling around the province is the proposed Regina Multi-purpose stadium. It’s important that I hear the thoughts of my constituents on this issue. I would appreciate any feedback positive or negative on the idea of a new stadium in Saskatchewan.

DAYS OF OUR LIVES EJ awoke from his coma and referred to Sami as his wife. Chloe allowed Carly to believe that she slept with Nathan instead of Philip. Chad was unaware that he just accepted an internship at his father’s (Stefano) company. Nicole found out that Brady was keeping Vivian entombed. Rafe and Sami made plans to get married before EJ could ruin it for

ALL MY CHILDREN Caleb offered to help Marissa with her custody fight. JR accidentally walked in on Annie while she was undressed. Colby encouraged Damon to let out his fun side and not spend so much time studying. AJ was teased at school about his parents’ divorce. Brot didn’t understand why Natalia wanted to keep their relationship secret from Jesse. Ryan visited Greenlee in jail. Wait to See: Scott tosses his wedding ring.

GENERAL HOSPITAL Siobhan found out that Ronan was not who she thought he was. Robin had visions of her first love, Stone, as she lay imprisoned at the bottom of a well. Brook Lynn suffered a panic attack during her flight to Paris with Nikolas. Sam felt insecure about Jason’s close proximity to Brenda. Lisa pulled a gun on Patrick. Sonny found Brenda waiting for him inside his penthouse. Wait to See: Suzanne and Diane make formidable foes.

ONE LIFE TO LIVE Jessica asked Natalie to be her maid of honor. Starr was less than thrilled to learn that Cole would be seeing Hannah more often. Bo was suspicious of Clint’s intentions for helping James. Ross gloated to Todd that he and Dani were moving back to Tahiti. Langston tried to think of a way to get Ford’s job back for him. 501 - Death Notices/Obituaries

Annie (Hannah) Murray Annie (Hannah) Murray, age 95, passed away at the Estevan Regional Nursing Home on Tuesday, September 27. Annie was the daughter of Josiah Ditchfield Wrigley and Hannah Talbot. She was born on the farm west of Roche Percee. In 1937, she married Thomas A. Murray and they lived at the coal mines and in Roche Percee area until moving to Sussex Arms in Estevan. Annie was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Tom; two infants, Annabelle and William; her brothers, Harry (Veda), Joe (Gladys), Roy (Lillian), Norman (Evelyn), Dick (Olga) and Jimmy; her sister, Vera (William) Pearson. She is survived by her son, Barrie (Elaine); grandsons, Ken (Kim) and Alan (Louise); and her great grandchildren, Thomas, Andrew (Kassey Schrader), Jennifer (Wes Biech) and Bailey (Luke) Etelamaki. We know Mom will continue to watch over her family, which was her pride and joy, and it wouldn’t surprise us to know she’s now baking buns for the angels. If so desired, donations may be made to the Estevan Regional Nursing Home Auxiliary or to the new nursing home fund.

Thank You The Murray family would like to thank the staff of the Estevan Regional Nursing Home for the care they have given to Mom (Annie) during her years at the facility, but a special thanks for the care and special considerations given to all the family during Mom’s final days. Thank you also to Pastor Bob Schultz for special time spent with Mom and the family, and to Luke Etelamaki for presiding at our final celebration for Mom. T1*21

World War I Pin Q: I have a pin that was worn in the hat of an officer of the Italian Army during World War I. What would be its approximate value? -- Francine, Rio Rancho, N.M. A: I contacted several military collectors and they seem to agree that it is probably worth in the $15 to $25 range, depending on both condition and desirability. *** Q: I sent you a list of about 40 antiques and collectibles that I own, with a request that you provide me with current values so I can sell these items for a fair market price. I even enclosed a self-addressed, stamped envelope, but I have not heard from you in over a month. What’s the problem? -- Ken, Fall River, Mass. A: I am not an appraiser, nor do I play one on televi-

sion. If that is what you need, you can find a certified appraiser in your area at one of two excellent websites: www.appraisers.org and www.appraisersassoc.org. You should expect to pay for this service. I sometimes reference values in this column, but generally they come from a price guide I trust, a website or an opinion of a knowledgeable collector/expert. Although I was directly involved in the antique/collectible business for more than three decades, I am not qualified to appraise, which is why I often steer my readers in the right direction so that they can find the information they need. Because of the volume of mail and e-mails that I receive, I can’t personally answer letters, even ones with SASE. Even though I try to answer questions within a month or two of when they are received, it is not always possible.

*** Q: I have a collection of signed 8-by-10 photographs by stars who include Bill “Bojangles Robinson, Laurel and Hardy, Alan Ladd and Gene Autry. I would like to find out current values for insurance purposes. -- Marie, McKees Rocks, Pa. A: Robert Jones is an established dealer who specializes in celebrity autographs, and he might be able to help you. His contact information is 559 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820; jones@autographworld.

com; and www.autographworld.com. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox is unable to personally answer all reader questions. Do not send any materials requiring return mail. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
