THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2010

ARIES (March 21 toApril 19) Deciding to work out that pesky problem (even though you might have been bored, bored, bored with it) should be paying off right about now. Expect to hear some very welcome news very soon. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Unexpected news might cause you to rethink a previous conclusion. Don’t be bullheaded and try to bluff it out. Make the needed change, and then take a bow for your objectivity. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Money-matters should be considered as you continue to work out your holiday plans. This is a good time to scout out discounts before demand for them outstrips their availability. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A calm period early in the week helps you complete most, if not all, of your unfinished tasks. A new project appears

by midweek, and this one could carry some big career potential. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Positive results from recent ventures continue to pump up those self-esteem levels, making you Fabulous Felines feel you can tackle any challenge anyone wants to throw at you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Family and friends might feel neglected because of your almost total focus on a project. Try to rework your schedule so you can have time for both your loved ones and your work. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t be surprised if you suddenly hear from someone from your past who wants to contact you about the possibility of renewing a long-dormant (if not dead) relationship. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good

time to check over what went right and what went wrong with recent efforts. This can provide valuable lessons for projects that will be coming up soon. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Dealing with people who feel they’re always right about everything might be a problem for some. But the savvyArcher should be able to deflate their oversize egos. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This week favors a balance between the demands of your work and your need for fun timeouts. Taking breaks helps restore and keep your energy levels high. AQUARIUS (January 20

to February 18) There could be an occasional setback in what you’re working on. But look at them as lessons on how to do better as you move along. More supporters turn up to cheer you on. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Although a more positive aspect influences this week’s course, you still need to be sure that those who will work with you have no reason to work against you. Good luck. BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in keeping your promises. It’s not always easy to do, but somehow you do it. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Small Business Week Don’t lose track of your company’s cash Cash-flow management is at the heart of every business, and that’s doubly true in the rough and tumble world of retailing. Here, the line between liquidity and bankruptcy can be razor thin. Just ask Alexandre Bastide, president of Underworld Skateboard. The young entrepreneur opened his first store in Montreal in 1995 when he was just 19, and since then has seen many of his competitors close shop. The reasons were all too common, Bastide said.

“No business plan, buying without a budget, buying too much inventory,” said Bastide, whose company sells skateboards, accessories and apparel. “Heck, I wasn’t much better prepared when I started. I relied on my instinct, not a budget, for my first few years. It worked, but I was fortunate.” Bastide has since opened a second store in Vancouver and is now evangelical about managing cash flow. He says he’s had little choice at a time of demanding suppliers, extra-cautious bankers and

intense competition from big-box stores. One of his key strategies is to develop excellent relationships with suppliers — a prerequisite for negotiating better payment terms during cash-crunch periods. The observation that cash is king in business is hardly new. That’s supposed to be Business 101 stuff. Indeed, you can Google “cash flow management” and within the 367,000 results you will find lots of sound, practical advice on all your cash flow problems.

Then again, maybe not. “All that information won’t do your company much good if you don’t understand how money flows in and out of your specific business,” said Edmée Métivier, executive vice-president, Financing and Consulting, at the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). “There are a lot of recipes out there for managing cash flow, but where too many entrepreneurs fail is in understanding how to adapt those recipes to fit their particular busi-

ness.” As a first step, Métivier says companies need to understand and embrace three principles of cash flow: 1. Understand how cash flows in and out of your company, and how that fluctuates throughout the year. 2. Establish, and continuously update, a 12month cash flow projection. Think of this forecast as an early warning system that will help you have enough cash on hand to ride out slow periods. 3. If you don’t understand 1 and 2, get expert

advice. Your business depends on it. Put simply, positive cash flow means having more money flowing into your business than flowing out. Business 101 stuff for sure, yet not having enough cash on hand to pay bills is still one of the most common reasons companies fail. “There are some basics of business that you just can’t miss, and unfortunately too many people do,” said Peter Brown, national leader, Private Company Services at Deloitte. continued on page 6

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2010

Small Business Week Don’t lose track of your company’s cash continued from page 5 Brown stresses that no company is immune from the impact of a recession or a fluctuating Canadian dollar. But for most businesses, cash flow is generally predictable. “It’s important to monitor the key indicators in your business — things like your bank account balance, accounts receivable turnover, inventory turnover and sales growth,” he said. “Paying close attention to these metrics on a daily basis will help predict whether your company will have a cash issue or not.” There are practical ways to prepare for cyclical cash shortages. Métivier says companies can, for example, offer customers discounts for paying invoices early. Taking out a line of credit or term loan is another option. But don’t knock on your banker’s door when your company is bleeding

red ink, Métivier said. “Approach them when your balance sheet looks strong.” One common mistake companies make is using their working capital to pay for long-term investments, such as new equipment, facility expansions or moving into new markets. You’re better off using debt to finance these projects, or refinancing fixed assets to free up capital, Métivier says. Bastide financed his Vancouver expansion with a loan from BDC, a loan from his landlord and a personal line of credit. He also sought expert advice, something too many entrepreneurs are either too proud or too frugal to do. “Entrepreneurs are very proud people, and many believe, particularly when they start up, that they can handle everything themselves,” Métivier says. “Don’t be afraid of a little humility—talk to

an accountant or a consultant. Both you and your business will be stronger for it.” Tips for building your cash flow: 1. Develop a cashflow planner and track cash throughout the month; 2. Closely monitor financial statements; 3. Build good relationships with customers and suppliers; 4. Collect payments faster and pursue late bills; 5. Focus on inventory management and product offerings; 6. Use debt, not working capital, to finance fixed assets; 7. Use a line of credit, or your own money, to increase your working capital; 8. Refinance your fixed assets; 9. Cut waste and streamline operations; 10. Get external advice.

Taking Up the Terry Fox Challenge

Baseball Cards Q: I have a complete 1997 Fleer baseball card set. It is in mint condition, and I am now ready to sell. -- Steve, Austin, Texas A: I checked several price guides, and they all seem to agree that your set is worth about $100. The set is 761 cards including the checklist. *** Q: I have two questions. An aunt recently gave me a “hot formed” glass vase, and neither one of us has any idea of exactly what this term means. My second question involves a glass bowl that is Kew Blas. What can you tell me about it? -Susan, Surprise, Ariz. A: Hot formed glass refers to a glass that is manipulated while it is still hot and pliable. Kew Blas glassware is an iridescent art glass that was manufactured in limited quantities by the Union Glass Company of Somerville, Mass., from the late Victorian era to about 1915. This is exceptional glass and usually sells for a premium. *** Q: I have a 33 rpm recording by Mae West and W.C. Fields on the Harmony label. Although it has been played, it is still in fairly decent shape. How much do you think it might be worth? -- Carl, Baltimore, Md. A: Your LP was issued in about 1970 and is worth in the $6 to $10 range, according to the Official Price Guide to Records by Jerry Osborne (House of Collectibles). *** Q: I have a child’s comic book from the 1940s, a railroad pass from 1928, letters with old postage stamps and some other odds and ends. How do you recommend that I sell these items? -- Scott, Amarillo, Texas A: Perhaps you should

list them on eBay. That will allow a national audience of collectors to see them and determine if there is any interest. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box

Variety highlights model engineering show It’s not too often you’ll find trains, saws, dragsters, horse carriages, boats and steam powered engines under one roof. That is unless it’s a model engineering show residing under said roof. The 23rd annual Estevan Model Engineering Show was held Saturday and Sunday at the WylieMitchell Hall. Much like the previous 22 shows, the 2010 edition featured an impressive, and varied, collection of models. Exhibitors from throughout Saskatchewan, Alberta and the northern United States found their way to the Energy City for the show. One of the more impressive displays came from Deadwood, South Dakota’s Jerry Pontius. A retiree, Pontius was

attending his fourth show in Estevan. He said he got hooked on model engineering 15 years ago and is still going strong. “I refurbished a hoisting model and I had so much fun doing that, I started building models,” said Pontius whose collection included a model tree cutting saw and a Baldwin six horsepower steam engine. Billed as the first successful steam engine in the U.S., the Baldwin is currently housed in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Pontius said he has over 3,000 hours invested into his scaled down version of the Baldwin. “I went to the Smithsonian and measured that all up and made all the

drawings and everything, so a lot of the time went into that.” Also offering a glimpse into the past was Gordon Williamson of Bozeman, Montana. His display included a number of model engines, among them the Otto and Langen internal combustion atmospheric gas engine. “That was the world’s very first engine, 1867,” said Williamson who noted that he been involved with model engineering for most of his life, a fact that was apparent by his display. “(The Fairbanks and Morse) engine is a three cylinder engine with air start. It was made in 1904 or 1905. The air start was the reason I wanted to build that engine.

“The Mery engine down there was completely unique in its own right. Real early engine built in California, it was an adaptation to a steam engine but it was patented as a gas engine and we only know of two that were built. There’s a little bit of everything here.” Williamson noted he has been coming to the Estevan show “pretty much every year they’ve had it,” and also travels to shows on the West Coast of the U.S. and Detroit. “We always come here because this is a pretty neat show,” he said. “There is usually the same group at each show but they are a different group because of the different areas of the country. Here there is a little group from this area. It’s fun.”

The Manitoba Live Steamers exhibit was popular with people attending the Estevan Model Engineering Show.

Jerry Pontius of Deadwood, South Dakota spent over 3,000 hours on the Baldwin six Horsepower Steam Engine, which is shown above.

Bozeman, Montana resident Gordon Williamson had an impressive display that included his scaled down version of a Fairbanks and Morse 3 cylinder engine.

FOR SIDING REPLACEMENT REVERS HOUSING AUTHORITY REVERS, SASKATCHEWAN

Ghostly Greeters Give Gentle Fright These friendly garden ghost greeters will give a gentle fright on Halloween night when partygoers and trick-or-treaters stroll up the walkway to your home. They are simple enough for families to make at the last minute and use basic items you probably have on hand. Dress up several in different heights, shapes and sizes for extra “Boos!” Here’s the stuff you’ll need for one ghost: --2 large, sturdy white dinner-size paper plates --2 standard, lightweight wire clothes hangers --a 3-foot-long section of 1/2-inch dowel from the hardware store. An old broomstick, yardstick or tree branch of the same length also works --1 piece of 45-inch-

by-45-inch lightweight white lining fabric, or use a lightweight white plastic disposable tablecloth cut to size --2 yards 1-inch-wide black ribbon --Self-stick craft foam sheets or felt and glue --Duct tape --Pliers and stapler Here’s the Halloween fun: 1. To make arms for the ghost, unwind the top of the hanger and straighten out the semi “S” shape. The hanger will look like a threesided topless rectangle in front of you: a short side, a base and a long side. 2. Bend the short side down to the base, and twist the wire in place with pliers to form a narrow loop. You now have one arm. Repeat with a second hanger for the other arm. 3. Twist together the

Sealed tenders for the exterior siding replacement at various addresses in Redvers, Saskatchewan will be received at the ofÀce of Redvers Housing Authority, P.O. Box 41, Redvers, SK S0C 2H0 until 2:00 p.m. Central Standard Time, Monday, November 1st., 2010. top 4 inches of the long sides of both hangers. Wrap the twisted portion with tape to secure in place. Now you will have two outstretched arms and a neck at the point where the hangers are twisted together. 4. Tape the “neck” potion of the hanger to the top of the dowel, and then tape that part to the middle of the inside of a paper plate. Set a second plate on top and staple around all edges to complete the head shape. 5. Now it’s time to dress the ghost. Fold the fabric into a large triangle. Set the center fold evenly over the plate head and spread over the outstretched wire arms. Tape the very ends of the arms to the underside of the fabric to hold it in place. Tie the ribbon around the neck of the

ghost just below the round plates. Cut two ghostly eye shapes out of craft foam or felt. Stick them on or glue them to the fabric face. 6. Poke the dowel or stick into the ground by your walkway. To display on a porch or deck, poke into a clay pot filled with sand. *** D o n n a E r i c k s o n ’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Good eating today Written by The Public Health Nutritionists of Saskatchewan with the support of Population Health Promotion, Sun Country Health Region DON’T DITCH THE LUNCH BREAK Have you ever skipped your lunch break to do work? A lunch break is for more than just eating - it is a time to look after your health. Lunch breaks are an important part of the workday and are required by law in most places. Quite often, people work while they eat which limits the benefits a break can have on well-being and work performance. Working through lunch breaks may not be to your advantage. Taking a lunch break can improve productivity and concentration. When we work continuously for long periods, tiredness sets in, concentration decreases and we can make mistakes. A break can reduce stress, give us a change of scenery, and help us re-focus when we go back to work.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I hear that taking 10,000 steps a day is all that a person needs to stay healthy. Is this so? How much time does that take? Do you count all the steps you take in a day, or are these 10,000 steps in addition to what you normally take? -- G.D. ANSWER: The 10,000-steps-a-day program originated in the Surgeon General’s office some years back. It’s been shown, more than once, that people who increase their total daily steps to 10,000 (counting the ones they normally take) have less body fat, lower blood sugar and lower blood pressure. There is more to staying fit than taking 10,000 leisurely steps. Strength building is also important. Ten thousand steps are approximately five miles (3.6 to 4.9 miles; six to eight kilometres). How much time does this take? The walking should be brisk. That’s defined as taking 90 to 100 steps a minute. For the entire time involved, you can do the math. However, these steps don’t all have to

There are not only performance benefits, but also health benefits for getting away from your workstation for a lunch break. The workstation is a breeding ground for germs. Bacteria cover keyboards, desk surfaces, and office supplies. A desktop contains 10 million bacteria! Unless you wipe your keyboard every day, you are putting your health at risk by eating at your desk. Eating while you work can lead to “mindless eating.” When distracted by work or entertainment, you ignore your body’s natural ability to tell you it is full. This means you may keep eating even though you do not need to. It is best to eat in a relaxed, nondistracting environment, so you can pay attention to your body’s natural hunger cues. There are other places to eat instead of at the desk. In the summer, take your lunch outside to a nearby park. You could picnic with friends and have everyone bring a healthy food to share. In the winter, meet a friend or colleague in the lunchroom

or cafeteria. Take time to talk about non-work events like family, movies, books, or hobbies. Another way to use a lunch break to improve health and well-being is to use some of the time for exercise. The Health Canada recommendation for physical activity is 60 minutes each day. Many people can do this with a few short bouts of physical activity. If lunch is one hour, you can go for a 2030 minute walk. If you have a half hour lunch, go for a 10-minute walk. Sometimes a workplace does not function very well for lunch breaks. Some may not have the space, tables, chairs, or even a lunch area. This may be an opportunity to advocate for a better work environment for employee health. There are many benefits to taking a lunch break. Be a leader in your work place and take advantage of those benefits. For more information, contact Barb Wright, Public Health Nutritionist, Sun Country Health Region, Phone 306-637-2469; email: bwright@schr.sk.ca.

be taken in one session. You can amass them throughout the day. A hundred steps a minute is a quick pace. You might not be up to it. It’s OK to start more slowly and gradually work your way to the 100-steps-a-minute goal, and not all the 10,000 steps have to be such fast ones. The goal of 10,000 steps is another thing that can take you a while to reach. Don’t try to do all this on the first day. Start out by taking an extra 200 steps a day, and gradually work your way to 10,000 over a couple of months. You can’t count these steps without driving yourself crazy. You need a pedometer, a gadget that records your steps. Pedometers range in cost from $17 to $80. They can be worn on a belt, put in a pocket or worn around the leg. They register steps by the movement of the hips or the impact of the foot against the ground. If you want to be really healthy, you have to add some resistance exercise to your program. Resistance exercise is lifting weights. The booklet on fitness explains the benefits of walking and other aerobic exercise in clear language. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1301W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and

address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Would you kindly advise us on fatty liver? What can be done for it? What does it lead to? -- H.C. ANSWER: The liver should have no fat. Fat infiltrates it for a couple of reasons. One is excessive alcohol. Another is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a common occurrence. It doesn’t always cause damage, but it can progress to something called NASH, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis – a condition that can further progress to cirrhosis. This stage is best discovered through a liver biopsy. The first treatment for liver fat, including NASH, is weight loss. For many, it’s the only treatment needed to correct the situation. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2010 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

• Keep shells from cracking when boiling eggs: Add a teaspoon of vinegar to the water. Also, if you stir the eggs constantly during cooking, your yolks will be centered in a hard-boiled egg. • “To make our luggage easier to see on the baggage carousel, my kids added a bumper sticker from the most recent place we visited. Now it’s easy to spot. We plan to add more.” -- I.D., via e-mail • For a personalized pumpkin decoration, stencil the letters of your family name onto a series of small pumpkins. Cut out the letters. Add a small piece of tracing paper on the inside of the pumpkins, over the hole made by the letter. Add your candle or other lighting, and line them up. • When making cookies, use an ice-cream scoop or a melon baler for uniform-size cookies. • If you have problems with tears and watery, stinging eyes when cutting onions, remove the skin under water. Cut the top off an onion, and submerge it in a small bowl of water. Remove the outer layer and the skin while it’s under water. Take it out and chop. This should lessen your symptoms. • “Keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. Your robe will be nice and warm. Hopefully it will make getting out of bed a little less harsh when it’s freezing in the house.” -- B.M. in N.Y. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.
