Driving safely starts with the perfect winter emergency kit One of the easiest things to help prepare for winter driving is to create a winter emergency kit and store it in your vehicle. It’s always a good idea to be prepared in case of emergencies, big or small. While you don’t have to keep an entire garage in your vehicle, it’s smart to keep the basics on hand in case something should happen. Put together the most complete emergency kit possible. From battery jumper cables to a properly inflated spare tire, below are a few additional thoughts to keep in mind when packing your winter emergency kit. Communication: The easiest way to get help is to call for assistance. Whether that is your local police station, a tow truck or your

friends/family. Make sure someone knows where you

ers: Frustration and time can often be saved with the items below. Keep these items on-hand and you can get yourself out of many winter messes. • Shovel • Small bag of sand or kitty litter (helps the tires grip on ice or slush) • Snow brush and ice scraper Make sure to stay visible: You don’t want to become a hazard for other drivers still on the road. Make sure other vehicles can see you. • Flashlight and extra batteries • Road flares or caution triangles In addition to the items above, the number one items you should have on your car are winter tires.

• Water bottles and granola bars Winter weather beat-

Winter tires help provide enhanced traction and optimize performance in some of the most severe winter weather conditions. Count yourself lucky if you don’t have to dig into your winter emergency kit this season, but knowing it’s there will make you feel safer on the road. And you never know when you might need to lend a helping hand. More tips on winter driving can be found online at www. goodyear.ca.

The myth of all season tires Choosing the right tires for your vehicle during winter is as important as wearing your seatbelt. While today’s vehicles are full of safety features, the choice of what you ride on is often forgotten or ignored and remains among the best ways to keep you and your family safe. A recent study by the Quebec Ministry of Transport has shown that a vehicle equipped with winter tires has 38 per cent less chance of being involved in an accident than a vehicle with all season tires. Yet most

Canadians remain unaware of the difference between all season and winter tires. When the weather is warm and roads are dry, almost any tire with sufficient tread will deliver some control. However, when the temperature drops, all season tires begin to lose their traction. The rubber compound of the tire starts to harden, giving it less grip on the road. By -14 C all season tires no longer function according to their design - resulting in 60 per cent less traction than winter tires. Essentially, at that tem-

perature a vehicle without winter tires will slide like a hockey puck on ice. “Many people believe that all season tires will do the trick in our harsh Canadian winters, unfortunately that is not true,” says Bill Hume, Vice President of Hankook Tire Canada. “All season tires are not designed to clear snow and slush, and can easily become clogged, making it difficult to stop effectively. Most winter tires have softer compounds and aggressive tread design that help to disperse snow and ice - giving the driver more control.” Stopping distance is where winter tires truly outperform all season models.

Selecting a quality winter tire, such as the Hankook Winter I*Pike, can result in as much as 40 per cent less stopping distance should you suddenly hit the brakes: that is equal to three full car lengths! If you drive mostly on plowed roads, or are able to avoid extreme winter driving, you might want to consider the All-Weather tire, a new alternative to the All-Season. This new breed of tires is specifically engineered to be more effective in cold weather, while still delivering great performance year round. The Hankook Optimo 4S, for example, carries the Rubber Association of Canada’s

Mountain Snowflake seal of approval for meeting or exceeding winter traction requirement. Although winter tires are paramount for safe winter driving, it is important to always remember to brake slowly, drive attentively and use extra caution when heading out this winter. Photo Caption: In cold weather all season tires can lose up to 60 per cent of their traction when compared to winter tires like the Hankook I*Pike shown here

The best way to warm up Stay in control your vehicle is to drive it on winter roads Many Canadians have come to believe that the best way to warm up a cold vehicle is to let it run. After all, it seems logical to us northern brave hearts that if everything outside the vehicle is frozen solid, everything inside the car will be petrified as well. The longer we let the car run, the faster it will warm up, right? Not so. Contrary to popular belief, excessive idling is not the best way to warm up your vehicle in cold weather; driving it is. Consider these facts recently presented by Natural

Resources Canada in its new publication Lean and Clean: Best Practices for Fuel-Efficient Driving: • Some drivers let their vehicle run for six to eight minutes or more to warm up the inside of the vehicle. Letting a vehicle warm up for that long only warms the engine. It does nothing for the wheel bearings, steering, suspension, transmission and tires. These parts can only be warmed up by driving the vehicle, which in turn, allows the ventilation system to heat the inside of the vehicle; • By using a block

heater for just a couple of hours on a timer, your vehicle will reach its optimal operating temperature faster; • The faster your vehicle reaches that temperature, the more efficiently it will run; • The average vehicle with a three-litre engine wastes 300 millilitres – more than one cup – of fuel for every 10 minutes of idling; You can find more helpful tips for fuel-efficient driving on the NRCan website at www.vehicles. nrcan.gc.ca.

Danger Crossing Deer!

In a recent Michelin survey, Canadians said that losing control of their vehicles on winter roads is one of their biggest fears. When you lose control of your vehicle, it can be difficult to resume your initial direction. Should you have the misfortune to find yourself losing control of your car, keep your foot on the

brake until the car comes to a complete stop. Remain calm and manoeuvre your car out of the way to avoid any danger of being hit by approaching vehicles. Never get out of your car on the road or shoulder. Should a car in front of you lose control, rather than looking at that vehicle, brake while focusing on

where you want to steer your car. Vision and planning are your best allies! For more details and plenty of other tips on how to adopt simple, effective driving techniques on the road this winter, make a full stop at the Michelin Winter Driving Academy at www.michelinwintercentre.com.

Canadian winters can be cold and harsh, but winter driving doesn’t have to be After you’ve installed winter tires, follow these tips to ensure a safe and comfortable ride: Plan alternate routes and take your time Driving in winter months can be unpredictable with sudden weather changes, gridlock and road closures. Plan an alternate route to your destination and factor in extra travel time to ensure you get to your destination safely and on time. Be ready for winter driving Visibility is crucial to safe winter weather driving. Clear all snow and ice off your windows, headlights, rear and brake lights, mirrors, hood, roof and trunk before starting your journey. Snow left on your car may blow onto the windshield and clog wipers or obscure your rear window or the windshields of cars behind you. Also, improve the clarity

of cloudy or dull headlights with a headlight lens restoration kit, like the 3M Headlight Lens Restoration System. Plan for emergencies Keep an emergency kit in your trunk to deal with the unexpected. Motomaster ’s Winter Roadside Emergency Kit comes with a first aid kit, flashlight, booster cables, snow shovel and ice scraper, hand warmers and other important items to help you tackle unforeseen circumstances. Roadside Assistance Knowing help is only a phone call away can alleviate unwanted anxiety during winter travels. Prepare for emergencies with 24/7 roadside assistance for battery boosts, fuel delivery, lock-out service, flat tire change, towing and accident assistance.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty continues to impress everyone who needs reassurance about a project. But be careful you don’t lose patience with those who are still not ready to act. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Pushing others too hard to do things your way could cause resentment and raise more doubts. Instead, take more time to explain why your methods will work. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be more considerate of those close to you before making a decision that could have a serious effect on their lives. Explain your intentions and ask for

their advice. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might have to defend a workplace decision you plan to make. Colleagues might back you up on this, but it’s the facts that will ultimately win the day for you. Good luck. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat’s co-workers might not be doing enough to help get that project finished. Your roars might stir things up, but gentle purrr-suasion will prove to be more effective. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone you care for needs help with a problem. Give it lovingly and without judging the situation. Whatever you

feel you should know will be revealed later. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) While you’re to be admired for how you handled recent workplace problems, be careful not to react the same way to a new situation until all the facts are in. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Rely on your keen instincts as well as the facts at hand when dealing with a troubling situation. Be patient. Take things one step at a time as you work through it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your curiosity leads you to ask questions. However, the answers might not be what you hoped to hear. Don’t reject them without checking them out. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Be careful not to tackle a problem without sufficient

THE TRADER EXPRESS, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2010 facts. Even sure-footed Goats need to know where they’ll land before leaping off a mountain path. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Appearances can be deceiving. You need to do more investigating before investing your time, let alone your money, in something that might have some hidden flaws. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your recent stand on an issue could make you the focus of more attention than you would like. But you’ll regain your privacy, as well as more time with loved ones, by week’s end. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re a good friend and a trusted confidante. You would be a wonderful teacher and a respected member of the clergy. (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

Report from the Legislature Our government is continuing to put patients Àrst. We are committing $5 million to fund clinical trials for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) liberation therapy. The procedure is a potentially ground-breaking treatment for MS and this funding will help determine its validity. The $5-million dollars will go to the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF). The SHRF will establish an advisory panel, develop the call for clinical trials, and provide the scientiÀc, ethical, and Ànancial expertise to manage this initiative. With the leadership and assistance of the SHRF, any clinical trials undertaken will proceed based on the best expertise science can offer. Saskatchewan MS patients and their families will play an important part in the clinical trials. Information about how interested patients may take part will be available after a research team has been announced in 2011. Patients are then encouraged to watch for updates and announcements. The goal is to have a process in place for proceeding with clinical trials by the spring of 2011. More information will be posted on the SHRF website: www.shrf.ca.

By Samantha Weaver • It was American author, producer, screenwriter and director Michael Crichton who made the following sage observation: “Whenever you hear the consensus of scientists agrees on something or other, reach for your wallet, because you’re being had.” • Statistics show that more babies are born in September than in any other month of the year. • Talk about bad luck: In May of 2009, two thieves broke into a jewelry store in Milwaukee, bagged up their loot and tried to make their getaway. On the way out of the looted store, they were confronted by two more thieves, who took the ill-gotten gains. No one ended up profiting from the crime, however; all four were arrested. • According to an estimate by the United Nations, there are more than 3

Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall stuffed a woodcock inside a pigeon, inside a partridge, inside a pheasant, inside a chicken, inside a guineafowl, inside a mallard, inside a duck, inside a goose, inside a turkey. No word on how the 10-layer dish was carved for serving. • If you’re not the sort of person who makes the bed every day, here’s some good news for you: Researchers in the United

BUILDING NUMBERING BYLAW #2008-1789

At the request of Emergency Services, City Council passed the referred bylaw for the safety and protection of the Citizens of Estevan. When Emergency Services are called to a speciÀc address, it is very important that they can quickly identify the property when arriving on scene. Most buildings in the City are already easily identiÀed from the street as the civic addresses are prominently displayed on the front of the buildings. There are cases, however when buildings need to be accessed from back lanes, therefore the Building Numbering Bylaw requires the civic address clearly visible from the back lane. Such numbers may be attached to a fence, garage or freestanding permanent sign in order that emergency services can also identify properties from the back lane. Note: Properties without back lanes are exempt. In cases of new construction or renovation, properties are to display a street address number afÀxed to or legibly painted on a temporary sign visible from the road. For more details you may view the bylaw on the City of Estevan website at www.estevan.ca Please be advised that bylaw enforcement will be performing inspections to ensure bylaw compliance.

Energy Vanishes When Thyroid on the Blink D E A R D R . DONOHUE: I have taught fourth grade for 20 years. This year I couldn’t wait for the summer break. I was feeling fine at the beginning of the year, but as the months passed, I could hardly make it through the day. I had no energy. My husband insisted that I see a doctor. I did. The first doctor told me I was depressed. The second one took a longer time with me and ordered a batch of blood tests. My thyroid gland isn’t working. I have a condition with a foreignsounding name. Do you know what I’m talking about? Will you expand on it for me? -- T.Y. ANSWER: I’m sure you’re referring to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The Hashimoto name is not recognized by most people. It is, however, in our part of the world, the most common cause of hypothyroidism -

- a nonworking thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is located in the lower part of the neck. Thyroid hormone keeps all body cells and organs working at their peak efficiency. In Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the immune system has attacked the gland for reasons that are not clear. It’s yet another example of an autoimmune disease, one where the immune system turns on its own

body. Signs of a lack of thyroid hormone come on gradually. Fatigue and weakness make it a heroic feat to get through the day. Hair might fall out. Skin becomes dry. Affected people feel cold when others are comfortably warm. Constipation is a common complaint. Menstrual cycles are erratic. Weight is gained in spite of a poor appetite and a decreased intake of calories. In addition to these signs, the gland often enlarges -- becomes a goiter. Although Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and the resulting hypothyroidism are serious conditions, treatment is straightforward: Supply the missing thyroid hormone. Once on the pill form of the hormone, signs and symptoms disappear. It takes time, however, before a person notices big changes for the better. The booklet on thyroid disorders discusses conditions of both under-

Slow-Cook Applesauce Is Tasty Fall Treat It wasn’t exactly a pretty picture when an unexpected early snowfall blanketed the Twin Cities last fall. We simply weren’t ready for cold temps and a whiteout of fall colors. Since we were feeling and acting noticeably glum in our household, it was a moment to dust off the familiar adage I had repeated to the kids when they were

young and life had just turned sour on t h e i r hopes and dreams: “ O K , you guys, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” But we don’t grow lemons in Minnesota, so we proceeded to do the next best thing. We rooted through the closet for last winter’s mismatched mittens and hats, went out in

the backyard to our fledgling, spindly apple tree,

picked our last 10 apples from snow-laden branches and collectively mused, “So, when life gives you 10 juicy apples, turn them into applesauce!” And that’s exactly what we did. For a change of pace, we put aside our traditional stovetop recipe and instead sliced and diced all 10 apples and tossed them in the slow cooker with some water, sugar and a dash of cinnamon. It was a success! As the apples sputtered and gurgled to their own rhythm, the sweet and fragrant apple-cinnamon aroma permeated every room of our house. As for life lessons, once we put a positive spin on the situation, we enjoyed cozy indoor time together, and we are no doubt the better for it. Yo u don’t need a “when life gives you lemons” moment
