/LETTER FROM THE EDITOR/ Hi, and welcome to the debut issue of SEVEN/SEVEN. We’ve been working extremely hard over the last four months to put this together (so hard in fact, I managed to miss the season opener of Glee!) and it’s still a little surreal that we’re already here! This month we’ve got comprehensive coverage of both Melbourne Spring Fashion Week and Parklife, as well as spotlights on bands Gold Fields, The Aves, and office favourites Terracotta Palace (fuelled in no way by one of the members being on staff) As is suggested on the cover, this issue is all about emerging talent, so for our editorial we were lucky

enough to shoot pieces from Coelho (who just showed at the ‘Made in Melbourne’ show at MSFW) and Adrian Bressanutti, a very exciting young Melbourne designer. TERRACOTTA PALACE

With a sound “that’s hard to describe”, Adelaide locals Terracotta Palace are a band to watch Paige Richards

With a bio that reads “It’s a sound few have yet to define. Traditional distortion of grinding guitar, intertwined with delicate rolling swells of the piano and the precise assortment of percussion all blend to produce an unusual chemistry”, it goes without saying that Terracotta Palace are a variant in a world of two guitars and a drum-kit. And it’s not just the bio that should generate interest in the band; stacking up a generous amount of gigs throughout Adelaide, the boys (Tom Daly vocals/guitar, Ben Jones - vocals/keys/synth, and Ryan Gerlach - vocals/drums) are becoming regular fixtures on major gig nights with their impressive set. Although still unsigned it’s a credit to them that at their gigs, the dedicated crowd knows the words to their demo released through their website earlier in the year, and with an EP in the works, things only seem to be getting better. With influences ranging from The Mess Hall and The Stokes, to LCD Soundsystem and The Rolling Stones, the Palace’s sound is a rich blend of old and new; and one that is all their own. From their track ‘Hangover’, you have to take a double take, with the delicate guitar melody sounding that it could easily find a home on a Silversun Pickups record, where the roaring piano swells of ‘Freedom Chained’ lend to a heavier sound. With regular gigs coming up, there’s not a shortage of chances to see their “hard to describe” sound for yourself. REVIEW: WATCH THE THRONE JAY-Z & KANYE WEST Given the current industry climate; most albums can’t escape the dreaded leak....except Jay-Z and Kanye West’s collaborative effort, Watch The Throne. In rather unceremonious (and uncharacteristic) fashion, one of the years most anticipated releases dropped on iTunes at 12am August 8th with little fanfare...and having escaped the inevitable.

The tracks, however, are anything but understated, with Yeezy and Hov showing once again why they are one of rap’s greatest tag teams. Tracks like ‘Gotta Have It’, and ‘That’s My Bitch’ are nods to groups like Run DMC and De La Soul (especially the latter with an homage to the funk line of ‘Buddy’) showing the self-throned kings throwing killer lines back and forth. It’s not all about bitches and benz’s though; tracks like ‘New Day’ take a more introspective view, with the track serving as a letter to Kanye and Jay’s unborn sons; holding more weight now with the announcement of Beyonce’s pregnancy, and ‘Murder to Excellence’ weaves a

sociopolitical commentary through a chorus’ chant, a la ‘Jesus Walks’. It’s interesting to see Kanye leaving the ego at home and taking the persona of an excited student, excitedly trying to raise the bar on his rhymes to impress his mentor, who, in turn steps up his word-play, nearly daring other, younger rappers like Lil’ Wayne to better him. The production reigns were most definitely handed to Mr West; with trademark soulful samples that throws back to The Blueprint era (check out lead single ‘Otis’ for further proof), and ‘Who Gon’ Stop Me’ sees the boys dabbling with genre-of-the-moment, dubstep, not unlike Yeezy’s use of a Daft Punk sample on ‘Stronger’. Thursday The Weeknd After dropping one of the year’s best releases, House of Balloons, in February, Abel Tesfaye AKA The Weeknd drops the second installment in his mixtape trilogy, Thursday. Put it this way, if House of Balloons was the party, Thursday is the aftermath. ‘The Birds (Part 1)’, and its refrain “don’t make me make you fall in love with a n***a like me” in any other hands could come across as a dare, but in Tesfaye’s hands it’s almost a desperate last ditch attempt to persuade his lover that he’s no good. Although the lyrical content is superior to it’s precursor, but the dark subject matter lacks the musicality of House, but it wouldn’t work any other way. Playing In The Shadows Example Example’s latest offering Playing in the Shadows shows the UK rapper/singer stepping into darker territory. There’s still the dance vibe present in his earlier releases, but the subject matter takes precedent. ‘Never Had a Day’ is one of the most touching tracks on the record, as is ‘Anything’. There’s still grimey tracks that we all love, namely the fantastic ‘Under The Influence’, and the Laidback Luke collab ‘Natural Disaster’. Neighborhoods Blink-182 Every time festival season rolls around, there’s always the pleas for Blink to tour (even a hiatus and a near death experience didn’t stop the rumours). But this year with the release of their first studio album in eight years, there was a glimmer of hope. Alas, there’s been no Australian tour announced as yet, but Neighborhoods is a fantastic consolation prize. Continuing in their artier direction from 2003’s self titled effort, the pop-punk princes are showing their more grownup side. Lead single ‘Up All Night’ has an emo tinge to it, where tracks ‘Hearts All Gone’ and ‘This is Home’ show a more sophisticated side.
