Helping adults and teens to face cancer with confidence for 25 years National charity, Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) helps boost the physical and emotional wellbeing of people undergoing cancer treatment through free Workshops, printed materials and online tutorials. Each group session is led by trained volunteers and is a chance to meet others in a similar situation, as well

Beautiful skin from the inside Skincare innovation in a drink

Skinade has been a game changer for skin hydration “My hair and nails look healthier as well. Even my Dermatologist noticed the improvement in my skin”.

2 weeks to Wow! “The difference was clear after 2 weeks! I am now in my 2nd month of Skinade and the suppleness in my skin is incredible. I have noticed a marked difference in the hydration and texture in my face. I am hooked!”

Andrea - March 2019

The brand trusted by professionals, and loved by you... The inside-out approach to skincare is becoming an increasingly appealing and effective way to achieve visible results. As we age, our collagen production slows down, affecting the appearance of our skin. Skinade’s active ingredients work together to produce a daily drink aimed at nourishing and supporting the skin from the inside for beautiful skin on the outside.

Love skinade “I just started my third month and see a great difference in the texture, elasticity and brightness of my skin highly recommend to everyone”.

ASK

‘She’s a Beauty ’ Gelish nail polish.

Kelli

Let me help you bring out your natural beauty... Hi Kelli, I’m a busy mum that still wants to look my best on a school run... but I never seem to have more than a few minutes for a morning beauty regime – I pretty much manage to brush teeth and wash my face. Any quick tips? Thanks, Jane-Marie Hi Jane-Marie, I completely understand, being a busy mum myself and running Pinkies beauty salon in Whitstable means I can never turn up to work without having made a little effort. My main piece of advice is to apply your make-up using as much natural light as possible, making sure you check in a full-size mirror before you leave the house – as opposed to a small, hand-held mirror. Sometimes early starts can mean we forget to blend our foundation, bronzer or concealer in properly, especially along the jawline or cheekbones! Here is a quick regime for you: 1. Wash your face, tone, and use a light moisturiser, if you look fresh, foundation may not be needed. 2. Use some well-matched concealer or a CC or BB cream to even-out your complexion. 3. A concealer with light-reflective pigments is really forgiving for any under-eye shadows too. Use a lightreflecting concealer that is easy to

sevenstarmedia.co.uk

blend and has a slightly yellow tone. Some products come with a reddish base and a yellowish top concealer. 4. Use your brow mascara to add colour and shape by brushing gently over the hairs of your eyebrows, and then add a lick of mascara to your top lash line only, leaving the bottom lashes natural. 5. Finish up with a dab of blusher on the apples of your cheeks, and a sheer balm on your lips. This morning beauty-routine will literally take a few minutes once you practise it for a week or two. Dear Kelli, I am on medication at the moment, and my skin is suffering, I have noticed more blemishes and some dark patches – what would you advise? From Kelly Hi Kelly, It is so important to stay hydrated, and get a little sunlight as and when you can. Avoid using too many products when you are at home, so you can allow your skin to breathe. But if you are going out, then use a good quality primer and try building up mineral make-up to a full coverage... this is less cloggy than liquid foundations but has great coverage. I love the Bare Minerals range because it has

lots of shades available that you can blend easily yourself to match your skin colour. If you are hiring a makeup artist for a special occasion ask if they use Airbase Airbrushing foundation, this has full coverage and lasting power – I use it for brides a lot and proms for these reasons. Dear Kelli, Our work policy is subtle nail polish, but I am bored of French Manicure. Are there any colours that can brighten by day but that are still neutral enough for work? Cheers, Tamara Hi Tamara, In 2016, Hollywood actress Maggie Q came into Pinkies salon to have her nails done during filming and she chose a stunning blush pink hue from Gelish, called ‘She’s a Beauty’... your local salon will hopefully have this product, as it is subtle and neutral when wearing plain colours, but it really complements richer or brighter clothes too. If you would like to ASK Kelli a beauty related question, please go to the contact page on her website: www. kelliwaldock.co.uk

2019 is predicted to be the year that refills go mainstream... So, cut down on plastic usage and be a part of the movement!

Wild flowers are key to biodiversity, helping to promote the growth of insect populations. They are also set to be a prominent feature in the beauty industry this year; with grassy scents inspired by unruly weeds, wild plants and flowers all making a comeback. Eden Perfumes are natural, refillable and inspired by botanicals.

This SpringSummer is all about colourful lashes, with subtle, flattering mascara shades, such as deep plums and midnight blues to make your eyes really pop!

2

Winging it back onto the scene this year is the eyeliner flick; choose a flattering brown hue for a wing that has a grown-up twist, ideal for daytime through to the evening.

Vikki's Story So, a bit about me, my name is Vikki I am 48. I am, what they call in the ostomy world a ‘double bagger‛. I have a urostomy and a colostomy, aka Rosie and Jim, there is lots of debate about naming your stomas. My life-changing ostomy surgery was done in April 2016 in Guys and St Thomas hospital, an End Colostomy Ileal Conduit with Cystectomy. I spent ten weeks in hospital with complications. Life with my stomas has not been without issues. I have psoriasis and unfortunately, I developed Koebnerised Psoriasis Pyoderma Gangrenosum, both my colostomy and urostomy are retracted and my urostomy is now stenosed. I know we all have our demons to beat everyday and life can be difficult. Sometimes I don't have energy to do things, I need a walker around the house and I need a wheelchair outside. I would say somehow being sick has made me better. I really did struggle post surgery and when I first looked at myself in a mirror, I cried. But I soon turned that around with a smile after all, I'm alive right! What with my skin issues it has been a difficult process coming to terms with my ostomies, but with the help and support of fellow ostomates, family and friends I have come through. Being an ostomate doesn‛t stop you being sexy, it doesn‛t stop you from wearing beautiful underwear and the massive confidence it can give you. So Vanilla Blush is so much more than ostomy underwear, we as ostomates have a lot to thank the founder of Vanilla Blush for, the amazing Nicola Dames. Nicola is a fellow ostomate. Nicola founded the company as an ostomate because she found there just wasn‛t anything beautiful out there on the market. I was first introduced to Vanilla Blush by the stoma nurses in Guys & St Thomas‛ who ordered me six pairs of knickers to help with my skin. They arrived and my husband brought them into the hospital for me, they looked like any other high waisted underwear but felt amazing. The secret is they have an internal pouch that your ostomy bag sits in keeping it off your skin and close to your body. This is what I needed, they felt amazing, soft, comfortable and most importantly they keep the bags away from my psoriasis. The pack had a little hand-written note, what a lovely personal touch, it made me cry happy tears. " You are beautiful wear with pride”. Vanilla Blush offers amazing and beautiful male and female ostomy underwear, hernia support wear, swimwear and intimacy wear. Which is truly gorgeous. After my awful skin I needed a pick me up so I ordered three new pairs, they were amazing, beautiful and had the same integral cotton pocket. I am now addicted to this brand and have more pairs of vanilla blush knickers than I care to mention, only to say it‛s a lot and there is room for more, a girl can never have too much beautiful underwear! The high waisted knickers are available in amazing colours but also they are comfortable and cover my bags since both my stomas are high up. I also have two support vests. Vanilla Blush and my new underwear has given me the confidence to ‘rock my bags‛ and be proud of what I‛ve accomplished. I even did a boudoir shoot, something I would never had done before my ostomies. Attached are some of the photos from the shoot. You will see I'm not skinny and I‛m not bothered! hell I'm sexy! bags what bags? Having an ostomy doesn‛t make you any less of a woman or a man, it doesn‛t make you less sexy. It‛s all about your positive mind set and ability to show the world ostomies are not the end of the world! They are just the beginning. You are still the amazing and beautiful soul you were before, so let‛s break the bad press and raise awareness and breakdown the taboos. I've learnt to know it‛s important not to dwell on the little things I have no control over. I've learnt to accept the things I cannot change, and to have the courage to change the things I can. My moto in life is to be positive. Having two Stomas is not the end of the world just the beginning of a new adventure.

any people share the opinion that only certain hair types look good braided... This is nonsense... because you can create a stunning braided hairstyle whether you have long hair, short hair, thick hair, fine hair, thinning hair, European hair, Asian hair, afro hair, or

no natural hair at all. Vicki Lord, celebrity hairstylist and salon owner has created braided looks on various types of hair, including natural and synthetic wigs. Vicki has taken the London lifestyle braiding bar concept and set it up in her South-East salon; she says, “Braided hairstyles have been on trend for a while now, and they are here to stay – this is because they are practical for festivals, and beach holidays, and the bohemian look is very popular on the red carpet and for modern brides. Braids can transform a hairstyle; they are versatile and practical... not to mention stunning. For those who want or need to wear wigs then braids are an ideal option under the wig for a neat and tidy fitting”. It is challenging to lose hair, because it often equates to a loss of confidence too. Ultimately, life can take choices away from us, but when it comes to your hairstyle and your confidence the choices are yours. And there are opportunities to be brave with your look; try styles and colours that you have not tried before. There are so many great hair pieces, wigs and other hair units available in both real hair and synthetic. And you can even combine these braided looks with scarves, headbands and other accessories as well as adding glitters and colour sprays. It is possible to style wigs once they are fitted on your head, but you can practise on a head-block too. Whilst there are some great options available now for cuts, styles and even braided wigs, it is actually a nice feeling to create the braids yourself, adding your own touch to the overall look, and reminding yourself that you can take elements of your life back into your own hands. These neat four-stranded Dutch braids are dressed back into a tidy braided bun at the nape of the neck. It is a look ideal for practical reasons for either trying on wigs or wearing when hair begins to thin. Depending on treatment length and strength, hair is affected differently for different people, and different people opt for different solutions. Changes and challenges are made a lot easier if we are prepared – so trying some of these braided styles or visiting various suppliers to experiment with looks will make it less overwhelming for you if and when the time comes to buy wigs, because you would have already considered styles that help you move forward with treatment confidently.

When it comes to your hairstyle and your confidence the choices are yours.

REAL

princess BEAUTY

When it comes to Real Princesses, Kate Middleton has a classic image compared with Meghan Markle – who is more contemporary. Makeup artist Kelli Waldock recreates both make-up looks – which one will you try? 28

before

Kate Middleton Make-up: stress). You can see from the images there is a natural, but full coverage – as these photographs have not been retouched or edited.

1

Primer: Kate usually wears a good coverage of foundation and this has a flawless finish similar to a classic forties look. To recreate the look, use a primer so that the foundation sits well on the skin and doesn’t slide off.

2

Base: After allowing the primer to sink into the skin, apply the correct blend of Airbase Airbrushing Foundation with a medium to full coverage. This will provide a perfect canvas for the look and has amazing results. I use it on TV clients as well as for brides. My model Jodi had a breakout prior to the shoot (which can happen for various reasons; hormones, medication side-effects and

sevenstarmedia.co.uk

3

Eyes: Kate has deepset eyes and has a very classic actress look about her – similar to Elizabeth Hurley – and she suits the liner and darker make-up that allow her eyes to twinkle. P.Louise is a great base for eyeshadow; place it all over the lids and either work it around the whole upper eye area with a brush or massage it with your fingertips over the lid including the inside of the bridge of the nose. This product glides on really nicely especially if you use a beauty blender over the top. Apply taupe colour into the socket to highlight a little and to contrast against the dark grey shade, which needs to be applied next, all over the lid. Blend into the crease, but do not take the shadow higher than the natural lash line when eyes are open.

Apply Kate’s iconic black liner to the inside top and bottom lids, and a thin line across the upper lid. Add loads of mascara; more on the top lashes and a couple of even coats on the lower lashes... but no false lashes for this classic princess look.

4

Cheeks: As Kate has full foundation coverage, much of her natural pigment is also covered, so use a rosy pink blush to enhance her cheek apples and work up towards her cheekbones.

applying a nude pink lipstick. A small amount of clear gloss works well with this look too.

6

Eyebrows: Kate has strong brows, so use a slightly darker shade than your

natural colour to really define the eyebrows, which sets off the classic look with an almost 1960’s retro feel.

Finishing the look: Kate is quite practical with her hair, and even wore her hair very simply to her royal wedding. So, keep it simple and classic in a low chignon or leave loose, pinning back two panels at the sides. Accessorise with delicate jewellery such as a simple necklace, or drop crystal earrings. Kate is often photographed with just statement earrings. Like many Royals, she is no stranger to a hat, and it is reported that her secret to keeping her hair neat for long appointments and in various weather conditions is by using traditional hairnets.

5

Lips: Kate’s lips are quite thin, so apply a nude pink lip liner to the natural shape of the lip, before

Meghan’s before... Make-up: 4 Applying a light foundation coverage can be done evenly and naturally with Airbase Foundation or your shade of Bare Minerals.

1

Primer: Use a good primer for the face, again because this acts as a great base for the foundation. In springtime and summertime, the sunshine is stronger and the daylight less forgiving, so it is vital to have a long-lasting primer to keep the made-up face in place.

2

Base: Meghan Markle has olive skin, and natural freckles, which are visible on her media photographs, including her wedding pictures. Whilst freckles can be easily recreated with the right brush and eyeshadow, using a make-up technique; it is more likely that Meghan wears a light foundation coverage, as she has pretty good skin tone and quality.

sevenstarmedia.co.uk

3

Eyes: Add a primer to the whole eyelid and use a charcoal grey to create a smoky eye, which enhances the eyes, showing off that special spark. Bring the smokiness lightly beneath the eye... be cautious to avoid an overly strong finish on the eyes. Apply lots of mascara. And add strip lashes for a flirty, Hollywood look; I used Ardell Demi Wispies as they are quite full and fluffy, making the look a more dramatic and modern one than Kate’s.

Cheeks: Use a peachy blush to create a glow and enhance skin tone. If you have olive to dark skin you can also apply a little bronzer to areas of the face that naturally catch the sun, such as to the t-zone and chin... make this subtle and blend it in too.

5

Lips: Apply a soft rose pink lipstick and then add the same colour lip liner after full lip application.

this ensures the whole look is framed well.

Finishing the look:

With her hair naturally voluminous in style and texture, even when left loose with a simple centre parting Meghan’s hairstyles are more modern than Kate’s hairstyle choices. She also opts for a low bun with loose strands to frame the face. Meghan is often spotted wearing large studded earrings to finish her elegant, practical look. Two real princesses, two similar looks – one more classic, one more modern... which are you?

6

ECKO ESSP EAKS Sometimes I wonder when this all began... my music journey that is now my life... When I graduated from University, I got a ‘normal’ job and quit after about a year... Everyone thought I was mad, but I went to music school, got various parttime jobs to support my studying and just started writing songs... Very bad songs – may I add – but, I was just doing it! ith music or any art actually, you have to go right through the middle of it – target, aim and fire – you can’t skip any of the steps and expect to hit a bullseye. For me, it certainly was a work in progress, and over time my writing got better, my voice got stronger, and I started to know my sound and what I wanted to say... I performed at The Royal Albert Hall last year... And when you reach these pinnacle, proud moments in your journey, it tends to make you reflect on what influenced you in the first place... I am a British born Nigerian and my background one-hundred-percent influences my music. I can hear my African influence especially when I ask producers for bigger drums, but I also have a secret indie side to my style and then I may want some heartbreaking electric guitar. We are all cocktails of our DNA and childhood, and I think creating art is about trying to share that cocktail with people. My album Human was important personally and professionally; it was inspired by the poetry of Maya Angelou; she was such an incredible force of nature... She did not have an easy start in life and turned into the most incredible human being – enlightened, passionate and fearless. I love people who make me want to be better and who are not afraid to be their most authentic self. And her list of accomplishments is just ridiculous: She was a playwright, a dancer, an activist, an author, a singer, a multi-linguist, a poet, producer, University lecturer… it just My album Human was goes on and on. She was a super important personally and woman. If I had superpowers it would professionally; it was be to bestow compassion... Incredible inspired by the poetry of things happen when curiosity replaces Maya Angelou; she was judgement. I would give us all a walk in someone else’s shoes. And such an incredible force of of course, my ultimate superpower nature. would be to be invincible. I would describe myself as a curious, creative, strong woman; to me, being a strong woman is having the strength to say what is important and necessary rather than what is popular or safe – I aim to do this with my music and image. It is having the courage of your convictions to live your truth, regardless of what anyone says. I stay strong with the support of my family and core friends – the people who make me smile just thinking about them. Reading books by Brene Brown is good soul medicine for me too at the moment. As for my future, well, I would love to collaborate with more people I admire. I met MNEK recently and he is such a creative genius, not to mention hilarious. I studied languages at University, so I have always dreamed of playing a show in South America and talking to the crowd in their mother tongue like Serena Williams did when she won the Italian Open. That is quite a geeky ambition!

I

Please follow my Facebook page: Touring and Surviving Breast Cancer, I set it up to help ladies going through cancer and treatment, and to encourage them to have tests.

t was June 2018; I was working at all the summer festivals in the UK doing what I’ve being doing for so many years... singing on stage as part of a successful Abba tribute band... the difference about that day was that it was the day that I was diagnosed with breast cancer... After finding a lump in my left breast and then having a lumpectomy to take away the cancer, it was discovered that it hadn’t moved into my lymphatic system. I was relieved to have the cancer removed. I had almost six months of chemotherapy, along with the side effects of losing my hair, my nails and eventually eye lashes and eyebrows too. Fortunately, I had pre-tattooed my eyebrows in and had stick-on false lashes ready to go! Plus, I also had a human-hair wig, which was ready to accompany me on tour with Bjorn Again in the UK 2018. I chose to carry on as much as I could and I refused to let Cancer ruin any more of my life, so I just carried on and no matter what happened I found solutions. I had to look after myself and my appearance for some very large audiences and I admit it was hard some times when I felt extremely hot in a wig and menopausal too. I felt very tired on some days. I knew which days I would feel awful on, so I made sure I

sevenstarmedia.co.uk

I felt the stage was a form of escapism

allocated time for rest pre-show... and ensured I tried to get sleep at nighttime. Drinking water for me was a great help, and I drank loads. I had to eat healthily and think positively too. I felt the stage was a form of escapism for me at this time because nobody other than close friends and family knew what I was suffering, which was somehow refreshing. I thought by not sharing my news I was protecting others, as well as able to have the space to deal with everything that seemed so much out of my control at the time. The music healed me. And I’m glad I continued with it. I somehow found the energy to dance and to sing for the whole tour. At points, I was concerned I might catch an infection, but I was extremely careful and I also had the flu jab pre-tour. I’m now finished with the chemo and have had a double mastectomy and soon I’ll have a reconstruction. I have a gene called BRCA1 and Triple Negative BC, so I’m glad I chose the mastectomy, because this has given me a higher percentage of survival. Being a mum, I felt there was no question in this decision. I encourage women to have mammograms and smears because if it’s caught early it’s far better for treatment and recovery. I’m 39-years-old, so I’m glad I asked for a mammogram when I did as otherwise I may not be here now.

I just carried on and no matter what happened I found solutions

INSTINCT

TO PROTECT Lauren Peacock shares her story...

When did you find out about your BRCA2? When I was pregnant with my son back in 2015, I switched to a new doctor’s surgery and my family history raised the suggestion of a referral to consider genetic testing. After some initial appointments with a genetic counsellor, I deferred testing until after the arrival of my baby. I ultimately received the news that I was carrying a defective gene in January 2017 – just before my son’s first birthday.

44

BLUSH | S U M M E R 2 019

Can you describe how you felt? I tend to assume the worst and so was expecting and prepared for the diagnosis. I’m also pretty pragmatic and like to be in control so I told myself that, actually, nothing had really changed – I’d always carried the mutation but now I had the opportunity to do something about it. None of that stopped me being scared about what lay ahead, but I was able to rationalise what I felt.

sevenstarmedia.co.uk

BLUSH | L E I S U R E & L I F E S T Y L E

What rushed through your mind? Guilt. Although I didn’t know about the mutation, or even really the possibility of it, until the second trimester of my pregnancy, I felt guilty about the fiftypercent chance of passing the defective gene to my son and also the increased risk of him losing me at an early age.

What treatment are you taking and what was the decision process? It’s important to say that risk-reducing surgery won’t be the right choice for everyone, but it was right for me and I knew it early in the process. I’m naturally risk-adverse and even with the increased screening I was offered, I knew that I would never be able to fully relax. I underwent a full hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (removal of my ovaries, fallopian tubes, womb and cervix) in September 2007 when I was 36-years-old. And in July 2018, I completed a two-stage doublemastectomy and implant-reconstruction.

Tell us about being pregnant and now a parent? My son, Harry, has just turned three and is the centre of my world. When everything was happening with the genetic referral, being pregnant kept me strong – Harry helped me through it in a way; he’ll never really understand. I saw what ovarian cancer did to my grandma. It’s a brutal disease and the instinct to protect Harry in any way I could gave me strength to take on the surgery.

What real superpowers have you had to tap into? I was scared ahead of the surgery – and had to undergo three separate operations so maintaining a level of calm and normality in the run up to each one was hard. Given the nature of breast and gynaecological surgery, I’ve had those parts of my body prodded, poked and altered far more than I was comfortable with! But it turns out that when the chips are down, I actually cope pretty well.

sevenstarmedia.co.uk

When everything was happening with the genetic referral, being pregnant kept me strong How have you personally developed through this process? I’m certainly calmer and less-easily stressed than I used to be. I’ve also been surprised by my acceptance of the changes to my body. Whilst I was initially very worried about the scarring from the surgery, it has affected me less than I expected - partly because it’s not as extensive as I feared, but also because I view my scars as the evidence of the most unselfish choice I’ve ever made. This process has taken me beyond what I thought were my limits and enabled me to find qualities I didn’t know I had. Whilst I’m certainly not grateful it has happened, I can at least take some positives from it.

Any words of support for others going through similar? BRCA is tricky because the decisions you make impact others close to you. Just my decision to be tested made BRCA a “thing” that other family members had to consider and not all of them were happy about that. Ultimately, you have to trust your instincts and do what is right for you, even if that means some difficult conversations.

Tell us about your business and your future. Prior to my BRCA diagnosis I was a lawyer for over a decade, specialising in criminal law. I loved my job, but as the BRCA situation played out, my priorities began to shift and, ultimately, I decided not to return to law. Having become increasingly fascinated by child-sleep I retrained as a child sleep consultant. After initially starting within an established brand, I launched my own consultancy, Little Sleep Stars, almost a year ago and with an emphasis on gentle and holistic methods. After an amazing first year, I am really looking forward to growing the business even further in 2019. We have also moved out to the countryside and are about to commence a full renovation of our three-hundredyear-old cottage! For those interested my website is: littlesleepstars.com

O

N the 4th October 2016, I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Grade 3 Stage 1 – I was 34-years-old and my baby girl was only fourteen weeks; her brother Jacob, at the time was just six. I went to the GP three weeks earlier after finding a tiny pea-sized lump while breastfeeding Emma; I was referred to the breast clinic straightaway. My doctor seemed fairly unconcerned at this point; his words were ‘You’ve just had a baby, your periods haven’t returned, there’s no family history but it is still a lump, so let’s get it checked out!’

sevenstarmedia.co.uk

BLUSH | L E I S U R E & L I F E S T Y L E

He later admitted to me that when he got the hospital letter he was in complete shock that it confirmed cancer. Once diagnosed my feet didn’t touch the ground, the first thing that happened was a test for the faulty BRCA1&2 gene because of my age and type of Breast Cancer, this would determine if I needed to have a double mastectomy or not. I was started on Chemo – six sessions over four months, while I patiently waited eight weeks for those results to get sent back to Great Ormond Street. Chemotherapy is hard! The hair loss and losing my eyelashes was horrible; I hated how chemo made me look, and taking steroids didn’t help. BUT it killed the cancer so I just did it! In the grand scheme of things, I sailed through it, maybe because I knew I had to carry on as normal for the children; I didn’t want to be the mummy that was sick. I did get a blood clot in my PICC line, and this meant I had to inject myself every day for six months. I bought a new lipstick to wear at each chemo, these little things seemed to help me not to focus on the negative the whole time, almost like wearing a protective mask. While having chemo the results came back and I tested negative for the BRCA gene, there was no genetic or hormonal reason for the cancer – I basically had one cell that decided to not divide properly. This was the best outcome, it meant I didn’t have a faulty gene to pass onto Emma and no longer needed to have a double mastectomy. Instead a lumpectomy would now be the best option for my situation. Six weeks after I finished chemo, I had the operation to remove what was left — 0.5mm of dead cancer tissue to be precise. And on the 29th March 2017 I was officially cancer free. It was around this time while in the six-week recovery period between surgery and radiotherapy, that I signed up for a Beta programme being tested by Macmillan. The idea was to see if there was a positive link between exercise and improving recovery

while in treatment for cancer. Each month for four months they would send you a pack; inside of which I had things like a skipping rope, water bottle, phone armband and a pedometer, along with ideas on the best ways to get active while going through treatment. Their theory being that exercise – even just a gentle stroll – helps your recovery, so I was determined to get active. I always wanted to run, but was lazy, so I went and got a good-fitting sports bra and started the Couch to 5k Program. I was very slow, but the emotional aspect for me was more important – when I would go out and run my head would clear... I could listen to music and not let those intrusive thoughts in about dying and leaving my two babies without a mother that infiltrated my head all the time. Running was good for my soul. My oncologist also agreed that running was one of the best things I could do to get my heart pumping and was amazed when I said I had signed up for the Royal Parks Half Marathon in October that year - just four months after finishing radiotherapy. The Royal Parks Half Marathon has always interested me; it takes in the four Royal Parks in London, and my friend Layla joined me and between us we raised over

four thousand pounds. I felt like I wanted to put something back in the pot for someone else, because they really were so helpful to me when I was in a dark place at the start of my diagnoses – they were always at the end of the phone to talk to and for that I’m very grateful. Since finishing treatment, I’ve carried on running, I have run another half marathon since and have two more planned for 2019. I feel the strongest I have ever felt and I’m coming up to my two-year cancer free anniversary. It’s always there at the back of my mind; that fear of recurrence never leaves, but you learn to put it in a box and lock it away. I try to live my life to the fullest, I no longer do stuff that will waste mine or my family’s time – we live in the moment, in fact, we sold up our life in England and moved back to Northern Ireland, and bought a house and have been renovating and turning it into our dream home. It’s true when they say after cancer you don’t sweat the small stuff anymore!

THE

REAL

Jan

Uddin British-born actor, living a life of lead roles in Los Angeles – including this year’s Cliffs of Freedom and the crime-thriller Lies We Tell in 2017 – tells BLU S H his views on independence, brave women, and love

I

ndependence has been important to me since I was a little child, because I’ve always been a thinker! And in my opinion, independence is about being allowed to do just that; to daydream; to think! It’s being able to live and move; to have autonomy over what I do. It is about having the space to come up with my own conclusions about everything and anything. It isn’t about being an island or isolating myself, rather about knowing I am a part of a greater thing; independence is about playing your individual part in humanity, knowing you are a part of ‘something’, and there is freedom in that knowing – that you can shine your true colours within the context that you are a part of a human family. The basic notion that independence or lack thereof, depending on other factors,

56

BLUSH | S U M M E R 2 019

spreads across society. Many people find freedom to be a struggle both internally and externally, but there are things that we can do to prevent these types of struggles. The aim is to stop the outer interference from shaking you or taking away your inner self – things that want your attention and things that want to enslave you are the causes of internal struggle... perhaps it’s fear, a superficial desire or something material... then the bid for freedom becomes internal... whether you are in a ten-foot cubed room with no windows or out there in a busy city with hustle and bustle... By taking time to identify your values and which of those are worthwhile, and then meditating and focusing on those things, living by those identified worthwhile things more, then more joy enters your life and the less struggle you have both internally and externally.

Freedom is something you cultivate from the inside... knowing boundaries and constraints for your own well-being... consider that a guitar string on its own will not make the sound that creates music without some kind of restriction or constraint... life is a little like that. I am a disciplined person – I like to have boundaries that keep me in a good place. Being mindful of the types of boundaries you need personally, will allow you to play your own beautiful tune. Music is my motivator: I am a very musical guy and it affects me a lot, which I am aware of, so I can put this awareness to good use and play the right type of song when I need to and be fearless and face my tasks... that’s what I do... I have learned to have self-trust and self-belief– and any mental blocks disappear when I hit them or run at them. God is my counsellor: I sit down and pray and explain to him what my fears are and the way I am feeling – and ask for guidance. There is much sense in asking for help when you need it, I love that I am able to do this. Love to be defined, first needs to be broken down, because there are obviously different types of love, the very basic kind, almost a frequency – that choice to live in a state of love towards your environment, towards yourself and towards everything. Then there is love for others – when you see their truth, their fragility, when you are touched by their joy and their pain equally, you get a true picture of them and you want to give yourself over to them, you want to support them... that type of love which brings you to joy and tears at the same time... putting their needs first and truly wanting the best for them... And of course, there is another type of love – Eros – that sexual attraction, when

58

BLUSH | S U M M E R 2 019

your heart yearns for somebody almost like you can’t live without them... that is more like an illness really – it is beautiful – but it’s healthier if this type has the other layers of love as a foundation first – so it is grounded in something safe. Love has to be something at the very existence of who you are, if you want to be a healthy well-rounded person, then you see this truth, and love, and accept others for who they are individually... I don’t believe we are all one – but that we are made of the same stuff and if you have lost a loved-one ever, then you can see some of that person in everyone else and you can choose to love others in ways that you loved your lost loved-one. And this makes life a beautiful experience and the world a beautiful place. Strong women tend to have fire within them, similar to the leading lady in Cliffs of Freedom; Christina is born in a time and place where women don’t have the right to choose or to fight in anyway, including physically, for love or for freedom... she knows the plight of her people – she won’t allow things to happen without challenging this, and when she faces tragedy, this is her impetus to take action and to fight the oppressor; to liberate her people, despite being just a ‘girl’. The character thinks for herself, and she recognises Tariq (my character) saved her life despite him being considered an enemy. Christina sees the goodness in him, and she carries this with her until she meets him again. So, like Christina, a woman who can protect herself and fight for what she knows is right and believes in, and recognises the love and goodness in others despite the past, situations, or what people say. Magic becomes reality when you are acting, because you literally live the role of another’s life. And when we shot Cliffs of Freedom in Santa Fe, New Mexico – it was

the most magical place I’ve ever been to and a far cry from shooting Lies We Tell in Bradford, although I loved that location for different reasons.

Cliffs of Freedom was shot like an American western cowboy-type epic movie, and the location added to this magical vibe that I’d only experienced previously from watching films before becoming an actor. The magic came from the horses and the guns, and although the settings were Greece and Turkey, we were in New Mexico – so with shooting films like these anything is possible – it was the most incredible set to work on – hot in the day – and it was exhausting because we were at high altitude, so even though we are all fit – we were out of breath and it was dusty too... SPRING

trends... Furniture Village ercol Artisan Slatted Back Dining Chair, £325

W

ith Spring in full swing and Summer on the horizon, the team at Furniture Village talk us through some of the season’s hottest trends, perfect for injecting new life into your living spaces. Whether you’re planning a quick home refresh or whole new interior scheme, there are heaps of great ideas to help inspire your latest project, however large or small. From a fresh twist on a classic pastel look, to the latest trends from the East and the hottest hue of the year, Pantone’s Living Coral, we’ll guide you through three unique, vibrant and stylish trends. For those who love a statement colour palette, consider introducing playful ice-cream-inspired shades into your dining space. This look incorporates a traditional pastel colour scheme but calls on youthful motifs that will breathe life and joy into your interior. From candy floss at the fairground, to a glass of fresh lemonade on a hot day — these pastel shades evoke nostalgic memories of long summer days, a feeling which is at the core of this playful trend. To create the foundation of this look, use your walls to showcase bright pastel hues in strong blocks of colour. Those who really want to make an impact should use highly saturated shades, but if you’re looking for something a little subtler, a chalkier palette will capture the trend in a softer way.

When it comes to selecting furniture for this look, clean, unfussy shapes will bring structure and add to the designled feel of the scheme. Here we’ve used designs from ercol’s stunning Artisan collection – a Furniture Village exclusive that showcases ercol’s iconic shapes and dedication to craftsmanship. Hand-crafted from solid oak and finished in an elegant matte lacquer, the range features an array of dining and occasional furniture that showcases the brand’s signature design flair – perfect for entertaining family and friends. The natural finish of the wood brings with it a sense of warmth that offsets the cooler elements of a pastel scheme perfectly. When it comes to accessories, this trend is all about having fun with statement design, so where you can, push the boat out! Glass vases in a variety of sizes and colours are an ideal choice for a dining space and can be styled with or without seasonal blooms. A bunch of daffodils or simple greenery will make a great addition for big family meals over festive celebrations and Bank Holiday weekends.

oral is always a colour that we associate with summer schemes and it’s been brought to the fore even earlier this year thanks to Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Living Coral. This warm, energetic colour holds the versatility to look amazing both as an accent shade or as the main event in a room. We’ve brought this look to life as part of a bedroom scheme, though it could work for almost any area of the home. Bold splashes of crimson, scarlet and coral are juxtaposed with softer shades of pink to create a look that breaks all the traditional rules. When it comes to styling a bedroom, it needs to feel inviting and one of the easiest ways to do this is to introduce a variety of different textures and layer them together. From luxurious velvets to beautifully tactile linens, these contrasting finishes make the perfect partners.

Statement bedframes are one of our favourite ways to add wow-factor to a space and the Narla Bedframe featured here is no exception. Showcasing a classic fan-shaped headboard and upholstered in a soft dusky pink velvet, this statement piece is right on trend. When it comes to accessories, cushions and throws will help you to build your look. Small pops of white across lighting and occasional furniture will also help to break-up larger swathes of colour and keep the scheme feeling fresh. If you wish to introduce an alternative colour, teal is a great choice. The cool intense blue-green of teal will balance perfectly with the coral, while maintaining a combined bold effect. A luxurious teal rug will provide a sense of comfort and create a striking two-tone feature when placed against the coral wall. On a smaller scale, a collection of teal cushions will highlight the lively presence of these colours. If you’re looking for a slightly softer combination, consider coral and grey – these tones are naturally harmonious together, and will incorporate the popular grey trend, which many of you will already have in your home. Both these colours are incredibly versatile and will provide the perfect ambience for your bedroom.

Nordic Fusion W

Furniture Village Jagger Console Table with Metal Legs £299

With 52 stores across the UK, Furniture Village offers customers a wide range of furniture for every room of the home. Showcasing the latest collections as well as exclusive designs from the world’s leading furniture brands, there’s something to suit every style and budget.

hen it comes to contemporary dining, Nordic interiors have always been ahead of the curve, leading the way with a clear sense of minimalistic design and practicality. A similar aesthetic that is finding its way into our homes is Japanese design, which promotes a clean uncluttered sense of living. Nordic Fusion offers a sophisticated blend of these two popular styles and as a result, is undoubtedly alluring. Offering a true sense of serenity, this look introduces the sleek, pared back elegance of Japanese design, while also including natural textures and warmth of a traditional Nordic style. Entertaining is central to both Nordic and Japanese cultures – with the dining table often taking centre stage of the home. Featuring clean, functional lines this look can be defined through its desire to be easily used and enjoyed on a daily basis. Both simple and practical, a piece that epitomises this trend perfectly is a dining bench. Perfect for accommodating all the family and additional guests, it’s also a great way to save space as it can be neatly tucked under the table when not in use. By restricting the palette to largely neutral shades, form and function are brought to the fore in this space. Both Japanese and Nordic styles focus less on large expanses of bold colour, and instead use fresh whites, soft greys and natural woods. To make a feature out of this look, consider introducing black accents. This colour will look great as a feature on the legs of a dining table or chair and will help to add definition to the space too.

Our Earth Dining table is an ideal option here. Combining a solid oak top with a stylish steel x-frame base, this industrial-inspired piece is perfect for family dining. Complete with four dining chairs and a bench, you can create a configuration that works for you and your space. When accessorising we’d recommend favouring living greenery over flowers. Through this, you can ensure that the look remains fresh and clean. Subtle references to traditional Japanese crafts can be introduced through delicate ceramics, which will be complemented with a sprig of greenery. Light is also key to this look – embrace wide, open spaces that can be filled with natural daylight. If you are fortunate enough to have large windows, consider bamboo blinds, inspired by Japanese screens that allow for privacy without blocking light. If your home requires extra lighting, opt for a modern overhead feature that will draw focus to the central part of the room. Ditch the traditional chandelier for a whimsical paper lantern or a contemporary piece that flows in sculptural form. An important aspect to this clean look is that clutter is kept at bay. An open shelving unit will allow you to display a few favoured pieces, such as a small collection of coffee table books, or candles, but don’t try to cram in too many accessories – less is definitely more when it comes to this scheme.

solutions that will assist you to move away from a sedentary lifestyle towards a healthier and fitter version of yourself:

1

EXCUSE “I have no time to exercise” NO REASONING –Time is one of those things that we can never gain back... We complain about time all of the time – lack of it, or too much of it! SOLUTION –We must introduce activity into our day-to-day routines, so that we are not separating exercise from our daily lives. For example, taking the stairs; OR going for a stroll after a light lunch, instead of having a rushed, heavy lunch at the desk; OR waking up earlier, because we are so productive at this time of day and a physical kick-start is brilliant for productivity and motivation for hours after the workout.

excu C excuses omputers, deskwork, driving, commuting, sofa and television... a reminder that day-to-day life involves a lot of mental activity and seated tasks, yet not always a balance of physical exercise. Humans have evolved to such an advanced stage when it comes to technology and sophisticated thinking, but are we in danger of neglecting our basic needs? Our bodies are made to move, and our minds are experts at overthinking – which is

not to exercise are not based on reason probably the reason why we are so good at excuses... With the strength of the mind-body connection, if we give ourselves a reason to not do something, then it will literally stop our progress. And progression is one of the key elements to experiencing a sense of ‘happiness’. The first steps to starting an exercise programme is to acknowledge that we need to exercise for various reasons; by recognising our physical, energetic, emotional or mental needs to regularly exercise, we have already made positive shifts in our lives. Here are three common excuses that have no real reasoning behind them, and practical

sevenstarmedia.co.uk

2

EXCUSE “I have no one to exercise with” NO REASONING –There are loads of great reasons to work-out with a buddy, but if we don’t seek out a likeminded person to do this with then complaining about exercising alone is not worth the words spoken. SOLUTION –Join a gym, or a walking or cycling group; train towards an organised event and ask people if they would like to team-up with you on a training plan as well as for the activity/event, (even get sponsors and support a charity close to our hearts); ask neighbours if they would like to go for a walk. If we make the effort to communicate and build relationships, we will be spoilt for choice when it comes to grabbing an exercise partner... So instead of telling ourselves, ‘I can’t because...’ let’s grab a friend and say ‘we can, so let’s’ !

3

EXCUSE “I can’t afford gym membership” NO REASONING – There are so many deals on, especially at the start of the year, or end of the summer. But there is an even better... SOLUTION for some of us –Simply workout from home. Include exercises that you can execute safely, but effectively at the same time; team up with somebody who knows what they are doing; do body weight exercises or yoga instead of weightlifting. Do routines that do not require investing in equipment or specific attire instead of being the one with all the gear and no idea. Follow the solutions for excuses 1 and 2, and there’s no need to invest any money. JordanMartin.biz

ou constantly hear about the need to love yourself in order to achieve happiness and live a fulfilled life... I am Anne-Marie, and It has taken me a long time to figure out how to do this. of a seven-year long emotionally abusive relationship. This break-up along with my next relationship which ended up as a heartbreak were the catalyst to begin looking inside myself. Why was I in a pattern of failed relationships? I started therapy for two years... the beginning of discovering my self-awareness. Prior to that point, I had no self-talk in my mind, I just did things without knowing the reasons why, including being self-destructive at times. Towards the end of my therapy, I started a new relationship with a man I fell in love with, who seemed amazing. I had learnt a lot about myself and about my past and I thought I was done with learning – that those two years would be enough to resolve my past issues. But... I was wrong... Whenever I opened up to him, and he didn’t reciprocate my efforts it left me with feelings

of helplessness and rawness. He was closedoff and didn’t express his feelings. It too, ended in heartbreak. At the time, I didn’t realise that I was codependent and anxiously attached. I needed to explore my options... I read and researched as much as I could: listening to Buddhist gurus and Eckhart Tolle; I read psychology and neuroscience articles, about heartbreak and loneliness, self-love, detachment, attachment, expectations. I was determined to find my self – to love my self and be happy without feeling the need to have a man in my life. In 2015 and 2016 I did some longer travels to south east Asia and also to South America. They were totally life changing. Everything I had learnt in theory I got to practise in reality: about self-love and respect, detachment too: and I gained more spiritual understanding and self-esteem. On each of these trips I had set myself a purpose or intention before I left. It was like I had a mission to learn something new about myself. And during my last trip in South America I had an epiphany: I wanted a new career challenge after moving from Sweden to London and working as a makeup artist for nearly two decades. I became curious about what it would be like to be a life coach. In January 2018, I got my diploma in Transformational Coaching with Animas Centre. It was time for a new start... I moved to Spain. I have set up a style and confidence business where I help professional women to empower themselves with their wardrobe anxiety, so they can feel confident to make their own style choices. I still work as a fashion and bridal make-up and hair stylist and this whole journey has given me a renewed love for my work in the fashion industry. More importantly, I am still learning things about myself... What I have learnt during the past eight years, is to constantly do things outside of my comfort zone, so I can grow. I have also learnt to never stop working on my self-development. It is the only way to a sustainable self-love. Through this journey, I have also learnt to value myself, be vulnerable and set boundaries in relationships with men. I love that I am now able to help other women with their inner confidence as well as with their outer image through coupling my work in fashion with the transformational coaching. I basically help other women learn to love themselves inside and outside again.

lthough you may not feel like it on many days, you will get up, wipe the snot from your face, have a shower, brush your hair, do your make-up, put the kettle on and get on with your day. This will sometimes feel like the biggest achievement of the day and that is okay. It won’t be long before you blossom into someone with a purpose, an actual real life reason to live Kris! In fact, it will happen just days before you lose all your hair to chemotherapy – and by the way, you have

It will be called CoppaFeel! – you will come up with that name and your friends will think it’s a good one but you won’t be entirely sure whether they are just being nice because you have cancer. But it sticks. Sounds like a lot of hard work, doesn’t it? Well, it will be. But it will also be the best thing you will ever decide to do and maybe even be the reason you survive for as long as you do. Although, of that, I can’t be sure. What I can be sure of, is that CoppaFeel! will change the lives of many people. Not long from now you will hear from people who have been diagnosed early because of what you do. And then those messages will become a regular thing. You will make a good boss. A boss of the charity and a boss of your own health. There is not a straight path to healing. You will have to take the [reins] and navigate your way through the medical system and jump through many hoops. It will be frustrating, frightening and you will find yourself in the loneliest of places but you will carry on. You won’t always know why, but you do. In the midst of chemotherapy, you will meet a guy. The relationship will be blissful, sad, comforting and then a bit shit. So... you break up. And you will possibly cry more than you did when Dad it will also be the died and more than you best thing you will did last night. And then time will pass and you ever decide to do and will be okay [again].

Although Dr. Dawson just advised that you probably shouldn’t be jumping out of a plane any time soon because you have a cancerous tumour on your spine, you will at some point run a 10k and then a half marathon. I can’t explain this phenomenon and to be honest you won’t enjoy these events, but you will turn into quite the stubborn bitch in an effort to prove that you simply “can”. And although you don’t

You won’t have a baby, but then I know you were never that bothered about them anyway, but you will marvel at your friends for pushing babies out of their vaginas whilst you own two legendary cats. You won’t own a house. You won’t get married.

There won’t be a cure.

you should know you will be OKAY.

Life will take on a whole new meaning. You will move to London and then to Cornwall, because you will understand what you really want out of life.

You will accept death. You’ll make some monumental errors in judgement of people. You’re going to like the idea of writing a book but probably never get on with it. You will see wonder in the mundane.

You will say YES and accept help from friends even though a little piece of you dies inside. Talking of friends, they will come and go. And that’s okay. Magic

Emerging from the other side of any major life experience can be both weird and wonderful.

Back

In Your Life After Chemo with this advice from Helen Rebello

C

ast your mind back to when you were a ‘normal’ person, with a ‘normal’ life, doing everyday things, without a care in the world... In the life that you likely had before you became a patient with a label that everyone tends to tiptoe around. Do you remember what it was like to be that person, or does even thinking about it make your head and heart hurt? I have worked with many people who have received devastating diagnoses; those perhaps like yourself, managing side effects of treatment; and one thing these men and women all have in common is the sense they have each lost their ‘old self’ – an overall feeling they have been robbed of their normality. Emerging from the other side of any major life experience can be both weird and wonderful. On one hand, you are delighted and relieved, but on the other, you know everything in your life has irrevocably changed. You may have mixed emotions, shifts in your energy levels, physical

changes may be present, along with side effects, and some underlying anxiety is also likely to be lingering associated with how you move forward. You have been through an experience that is uniquely yours, and nobody other than you is better placed to navigate your way forwards – no matter how daunting that may seem... Here are three simple steps to help you find some magic in your life again: Make a small list of simple pleasures that are important to you, or that you’ve missed out on, and promise yourself one of these a day. It could be something like spending a few moments longer in the shower; enjoying the sensation of clean, warm water over your body. Gifting yourself time each day for one small, seemingly unimportant pleasure creates a sense of joy, makes you smile, and elevates your whole being. Smiling lifts your energy and boost your spirits. As you move through your day, smile at others you encounter. If your eyes meet someone else’s eyes, remember the value of being seen and of simple human connection. This takes you out of your head and right back into the moment, helping you stay anchored in the present where anything is possible. You’ve been through a traumatic experience – but if nothing else, it would have certainly reminded you what a gift it is to be alive. If you want to experience more magic in your life, start saying ‘yes’ to new opportunities that old you would have said ‘no’ to. Do this with discernment, honouring your energy and boundaries. Say no to the ‘shoulds’ you don’t want to do, but ‘yes’ to anything that excites you. This will help you stretch and grow your confidence again, and you never know what magic will unfold as a result. Give yourself permission to let go of your own expectations, and accept that each day will feel different, as well as integrate the three points into your life, and you will find your new ‘normal’. And my wish for you, is that it includes a healthy sprinkling of magic.
