WELCOME FROM OuR CO-ChaiRs It’s our pleasure to welcome you to the Hilton London Bankside on this very special evening. We’re so pleased you’ve joined us to celebrate Breast Cancer Now’s 27th Pink Ribbon Ball. Every year in the UK, 55,000 women and 400 men find out they have breast cancer. That’s 1 person every 10 minutes. Which means over the course of this evening, 36 more people will be diagnosed. Everyone here will know someone who’s had their life turned upside down by breast cancer. And like us, some of you will have lived with the disease yourself, or be living with it now. Tonight, we’re coming together for many reasons. To celebrate those living with or beyond breast cancer. To remember our loved ones who’ve died from breast cancer. And to pledge to create a future where everyone diagnosed with breast cancer lives.
What COuLd WE aChiEvE tOnight? If together we raised £100,000, that could help Breast Cancer Now’s nurses answer over 3,000 calls to their free helpline. What if we raised £250,000? That could fund a 3 year research project, helping us get closer to the next breakthrough. The money you raise tonight really could help change lives.
a big thank yOu As co-chairs, we’d like to say a huge thank you to your Pink Ribbon Ball committee. This amazing event simply wouldn’t happen without their hard work, passion and dedication. Next year will mark the committee’s 30th anniversary, and we’d like to thank everyone who’s been a member during this time. That’s quite an achievement! A big thank you too, to the people who helped make this evening possible through their kind donations and incredible auction and raffle prizes. And finally, we want to say thank you to you – our wonderful guests. We hope you have a brilliant evening, and leave feeling inspired. By being here tonight, you’re helping to change the future for people affected by breast cancer.
Vikki Eccles and Avril O’Riordan Pink Ribbon Ball co-chairs
WELCOME FROM dELyth MORgan, ChiEF EXECutivE at bREast CanCER nOW Welcome to the Pink Ribbon Ball. This event never fails to take my breath away. Whether you’re joining us for the first time or coming back for another night of fizz, fun and fundraising - I’m delighted that you’re here. Tonight is all about putting the spotlight on progress. Progress that’s only possible with your incredible support. Since the Pink Ribbon Ball first opened its glamorous doors in 1994, we have made a number of gamechanging discoveries. Like new types of drugs called PARP inhibitors, or the countless breakthroughs into the causes of breast cancer, leading to new ways to prevent secondary breast cancer in the lung. But we never stand still. We now have 240 volunteers who connect people affected by breast cancer to someone with a similar experience. We’re running 180 courses to help people adjust to life after their hospital treatment has finished. And our petition to fix the breast screening programme is forcing a debate in parliament.
We also know that tackling secondary breast cancer is vital to achieving our vision that everyone who is diagnosed with breast cancer lives. And is supported to live well. Recently, we’ve secured the first-ever audit to reveal the true number of people living with this incurable type of breast cancer in England and Wales. Our scientists are using artificial intelligence to predict if breast cancer will spread to other parts of the body. And we now have 30 groups in the UK to support women living with secondary breast cancer. This is just a fraction of the impact everyone in this room is helping to make. Tonight is the 27th edition of the Pink Ribbon Ball, and in that time it’s raised a staggering £4.85 million. With your support this evening, we’ll be able to raise even more. And make even more progress. I wish you a wonderful evening.

Our vision is that by 2050, everyone diagnosed with breast cancer will live and be supported to live well. But to achieve this ambitious goal, we need to work towards that target right now. Every year, over 55,000 people hear the words “you have breast cancer”. In the next decade, this is predicted to rise by another 13,000 a year, bringing the annual total to over 68,000. Without action, the number of people being diagnosed will continue to rise, and tens of thousands more will die from the disease. We believe we can turn the tide on breast cancer. But we’ll only do it with the support of amazing people like you. Will you join us?

•
Last year, our Ask Our Nurses service responded to over 2,900 requests for support. 92% of people who use our helpline and Ask Our Nurses service say they feel less alone. And 95% feel more informed about their situation
•
Since last year’s Pink Ribbon Ball, we’ve invested another £16 million in research, including 19 new research projects. And right now, we’re investing a total of over £27 million into our research, funding around 80 cutting-edge projects
•
Our research played a leading role in making PARP inhibitors a breast cancer treatment. They’re a potentially life-saving treatment for certain people with early breast cancer. They can reduce the risk of breast cancer returning or spreading to other parts of the body, where it becomes incurable
•
Our researchers discovered that crizotinib – a drug already used to treat lung cancer – could help thousands of people with breast cancer
Here’s a snapshot of the impact we’ve been able to make since the Pink Ribbon Ball began:
“…I felt supported and given the
time I needed to talk, with helpful advice and reassurance. Thank you so much for being there.
”
•
We’ve taken over 255,000 calls on our helpline in the past 20 years
•
Our researchers have created the first-ever Artificial Intelligence (AI) model to predict the likelihood of people with triple negative breast cancer getting secondary breast cancer. This is when primary breast cancer spreads to other parts of the body and becomes incurable
“I am so comforted by your rapid response. When a person has cancer, every minute seems like an eternity when living in the unknown.
”

•
Our landmark Generations Study, which is following over 100,000 women over 40 years, has made countless discoveries about what increases the likelihood of breast cancer and what doesn’t. including how smoking can increase the chance of developing the disease Our study into male breast cancer has uncovered 4 key genetic changes that can increase the risk of breast cancer developing in men by 45-61% Our campaigns have led to many drugs - including Kadcyla, Perjeta, Trodelvy and olaparib – being made available on the NHS. This means more people with breast cancer get access to the treatments they need
•
We’re running over 180 courses to help people move forward and adjust to life after their treatment for primary breast cancer has finished
•
We’re working with 50 hospitals across England to help make sure that people who’ve just been diagnosed there can be benefit from our support services
All of this is incredible progress towards our 2050 vision – that everyone who develops breast cancer will live, and be supported to live well. We know it’s an ambitious goal. But by being here tonight, you’re helping us get one step closer to achieving it.
“…I don’t feel so alone now and I
feel lucky to have a group of people I know I can turn tom if I ever feel I need someone to chat to in the future.

OuR spEakER, nina LOpEs Nina will be sharing her story tonight. Nina was diagnosed with primary breast cancer at 36, after a long battle with doctors. They initially told her that her symptoms were nothing to worry about, and that “women often have lumpy breasts”. Over the following weeks, Nina experienced pains in her chest, and the lump in her breast hardened. She went back to her GP and was urgently referred to the hospital. After chasing up her results she was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. day was the first time I cried in front of my “That mother and daughter. At 36 I had to think about losing my fertility, losing my hair, losing my life. ” Nina underwent 7 months of chemotherapy, lumpectomy and radiotherapy. But after speaking to consultants she was made of aware of the chances of her cancer returning. In July 2021, Nina had a routine MRI scan found out that her cancer was back, this time in her sternum and lymph nodes. It was stage 4 and incurable. Nina is passionate about raising more awareness of secondary breast cancer and its signs and symptoms. She does so on her Instagram @frodayss, where she has over 30,000 followers. am now connected to lots of young women and remind them about checking “ Itheir breasts and knowing their bodies. And feeling empowered that if something is wrong, they can say and can also ask for a second opinion. My platform isn’t about fear, but about sharing my journey, raising awareness and advocating for those with a secondary diagnosis.
