Portsmouth Visit
WHERE THERE’S LOADS TO EXPLORE IN ‘24!
For a seaside holiday destination with loads to see and do, you really can’t beat Portsmouth. Being the UK’s only island city, Portsmouth is uniquely placed to offer some worldclass attractions and a year-round programme of events, all just a stone’s throw from the water’s edge.
The Spinnaker Tower is an ideal place to start, offering stunning views out over not just the Portsmouth cityscape but also out to the Isle of Wight, across the Solent and back towards the South Downs. If you’re brave, there’s also a glass floor from which you can peer right down through
“HMS Victory offers more than just a tour of the ship itself but also Victory Live”
the struts to the harbour below.
As well as the breath-taking vistas, there’s the opportunity to abseil down the side of the tower, or meet TV characters at some of the many special school holiday events.
Head back down from the tower’s view decks and you’ll find yourself in Gunwharf Quays, the waterfront outlet centre. In this transformed naval ordnance yard you’ll now find more than 90 shops, 30 restaurants, a multiplex cinema, bowling alley, contemporary art gallery and more. There’s even the Miniport, where youngsters can take a ride around the canal on a small motorised boat.
If you’re on the hunt for history, there’s plenty to be found just a stone’s throw
from Gunwharf Quays - at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Get one Ultimate Explorer ticket for entry to a host of historic ships and fascinating museums. Among those on offer are the world-class Mary Rose museum, and the iconic HMS Warrior. Meanwhile, HMS Victory offers more than just a tour of the ship itself but also Victory Live, letting visitors get up close to the extensive restoration project and the science, expertise and sheer hard graft going into keeping Nelson’s flagship maintained for future generations.
Of course, no trip to Portsmouth is complete without going for a walk along the seafront. With miles of coastline to explore there’s no shortage of places to go. Along the way you’ll find Henry VIII’s Southsea Castle, the Pyramids Centre (home to Exploria soft play and bounce park), The D-Day Story, a fairground, crazy golf, arcades, the Blue Reef Aquarium, Southsea Model Village, two piers and plenty more besides. For something else truly unique, be sure to head to the Hovertravel terminal, where you can watch the world’s only year-round passenger hovercraft service depart on its crossing of The Solent.
Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the promenade or pack bikes and roller skates to enjoy this three-mile stretch running right the way from Old Portsmouth to Eastney.
If you’re travelling with young children, be sure to download the ‘50 Things to do Before You’re 5’ app, which has a variety of open-ended ideas for things to do with kids aged 0-4.
Travelling on a budget? No trouble - visit the many free museums and attractions that won’t cost a penny. The aforementioned Southsea Castle is totally free to visit, as is Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery. Or how about Portsmouth Natural History Museum at Cumberland House? As well as the fascinating exhibits there’s the everpopular Butterfly House, containing some absolutely stunning sub-tropical species all flying freely in their specially designed greenhouse.
In warmer weather head to the splash pools to keep cool. There’s one right at the heart of Southsea Common, near the tennis and beach volleyball courts. Also around the Common you’ll find a play area as well as the renowned Southsea Skate Park.
“If you’re on the hunt for history, there’s plenty to be found just a stone’s throw from Gunwharf Quays”
Time your visit to coincide with some of the city’s big events and you’ll really make the most of your trip to the coast. Perhaps the biggest of them all is Victorious Festival, which takes over Southsea Common from 23-25 August. Its dedicated Kids Arena plays host to fun shows, fairground rides, live music, activities from local attractions and plenty more besides. Then, when the evening draws in it’s time to head to the main stages for performances by some of the music world’s biggest names.
As well as all the music and entertainment there’s comedy from some huge acts, plus entry to all the attractions that fall within the festival site.
Other big events in the calendar include the Portsmouth International Kite Festival (which welcomes flyers from around the world to put on breath-taking displays), Southsea Food Festival (where you can sample the best in global cuisine), and Live at the Bandstand (to enjoy an afternoon of free live music on Saturdays and Sundays during summer).
These are just some summer highlights, but being a city means Portsmouth doesn’t shut down in the winter; instead there’s a packed events calendar all year round. Whatever your interests or budget there’s sure to be something to suit, with events including a huge Comic Con, a free

Somerset Visit
Sand, sea, caves and elephants! It sounds like an adventure film plot but it is just the start of a wide range of family fun ideas in the county of contrasts, Somerset.
Somerset has been a bit of a secret for families, it’s on the way to the south west but with it being half the travel time to some busy resorts, the whole family can have their toes in the sand and sea so much quicker and give you all more holiday memories.
Brean is just minutes off the M5 motorway and has one of the biggest beaches in Europe, a remarkable 7 miles long. It has been an established family holiday destination for decades and has been tipped by the National Press as the hidden discovery for 2024, being only a couple of hours journey from London and the Midlands. With many holiday centres lining the coast, only yards from the beach, families are ensured a traditional beach experience along with entertainment and activities, including the village’s own theme park which is the UK’s biggest that features free admission with
over 40 attractions including roller coasters, dodgems, crazy boats and the Terror Castle Ghost Train!
Staying at a holiday centre in the village such as Sandy Glade Holiday Park will give you that family entertainment feel after a day at the beach, Brean Theme Park or the nearby Animal Farm Adventure Park. This petting farm is home to more than 250 animals! If you prefer camping then there are lots of options in the village which is overlooked by the imposing Brean Down, a 318’ high extension of the Mendip Hills that extends into the Severn Estuary. A Napoleonic fort at the end is a great discovery and invigorating walk.
From the top of Brean Down you can glimpse the famous resort of Weston-superMare. You can hire bicycles in the village and take the gentle route into the town and head for the Grand Pier which is packed with rides, attractions and events – you can enjoy lunch here or just along the wide seafront at Revo Kitchen & Terrace which has amazing 360 degree views and its own Revo Glo Golf, a glow in the dark crazy golf course!
“Staying at a holiday centre in the village such as Sandy Glade Holiday Park will give you that family entertainment feel ”
Whilst in Weston-super-Mare do check out the new attraction, Little Town Adventures which is an immersive children’s play experience. Described as a combination of escape room style activity, theatre and role play, Little Town Adventures is a miniature recreation of the town and includes its own grand pier, town hall, cinema, vets, police station, fire station, supermarket, and café. Charming!
The Somerset coast has immense variety all along from Exmoor’s steep cliffs, harbours at Minehead and Watchet, rock formations at Kilve and piers at Burnham-on-Sea, Westonsuper-Mare and Clevedon upon which the One Direction video You & I was filmed ten years ago in 2014.
“Brean is just minutes off the M5 motorway and has one of the biggest beaches in Europe”
Just 15 minutes inland from Clevedon is Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, with over 100 different species, family activities and a host of exciting animal experiences on offer. The work of this charity is to support, protect and care for the natural world, and to inspire people with a love of our planet and with hope for the future.
A star attraction is Sutton the African Elephant who has just
celebrated his tenth birthday! The world-leading elephant facility covers an area of 20 acres with a wide range of state-of-the-art features including a pool, large heated indoor barn with sand yards and water sprinklers, expansive fields and a large willow plantation - Elephant Eden was designed to provide a natural and spacious environment for elephants to foster their physical and mental wellbeing. Elephant Eden is home to four African elephants, Shaka, Janu, Uli and Sutton. A common theme along the Somerset coast is how the countryside is always so close and the sense of space and nature being entwined with the holiday experience.
“From the top of Brean Down you can glimpse the famous resort of Westonsuper-Mare”
The Somerset Levels are a renowned wetland area full of wildlife and a backdrop as you look inland from Brean are the Mendip Hills. The Limestone from which they are comprised is what gives rise to their breath-taking geological features. The village of Cheddar just a few miles inland is famous for its Gorge and Caves, the steep cliffs and vantage points giving panoramic views that capture the variety of this county. The views from the base of the gorge, looking up at Britain’s highest inland limestone cliffs will similarly make the whole family gasp in wonder.
“A few miles further east is the exciting Wookey Hole where you will discover caves, legends and adventure as well as the famous witch!”
Viewing inside the extraordinary subterranean stalactite show caves is a must, plus you will learn many fascinating secrets about our prehistoric ancestors. An immersive multi-sensory visitor experience has been launched this year that uses state of the art lighting, music, animation and colour to tell the story of how the caves were formed and evolved by the power of water.
A few miles further east is the exciting Wookey Hole where you will discover caves, legends and adventure as well as the famous witch! A safe route takes families through a number of extraordinary chambers, with added tunnels and walkways. The adventurous can even go deeper
with the Wild Wookey experience, an adventure for brave-hearted explorers involving crawling, climbing and abseiling (book in advance via wookey.co.uk).
Guided tours are in place throughout the day outside of school holidays. During school holidays, you can walk through the caves at your own pace, with knowledgeable guides on hand to answer questions and share stories and legends from Wookey Hole. It’s easy to spend a whole day experiencing the wide variety of attractions that also include a museum, adventure golf, enchanted valley, Wookey Hole circus, 4D cinema and fun in the mill.
As well as the M4 and M5 motorway network, GWR trains give easy access to the Somerset coast, see gwr.com . Also Berry’s coaches from London see berryscoaches.co.uk
