Title: Egg Drop Challenge Question: Definitions:
Gravitational Potential Energy – Inertia –
Task: Design a protection system to minimize gravitational potential energy transferred to your egg. Prepare to drop your egg from heights of 1,3, and 5 m.
Materials:
3 tissues 3 soda straws 5 rubber bands 5 paper clips 1 sheet of paper
1 paper plate 1 band-aid 1 meter of yarn 3 pipe cleaners 1 file folder
1 Dixie cup 1 dm scotch tape 1 coffee filter Elmer’s white glue 1 egg
Procedure/guidelines:
Students must only use materials on the list above, but you don’t have to use it all! We must be able to place your egg into your system just prior to your drop. Your system can be no larger than 1 foot square. Name your egg or system, record name, description and mass of system on the data table on the back of this sheet prior to your drop. o Gather data on 5 other systems and record. o o o o
Design: Diagram and label your system below.
Hypothesis: What about your system is going to protect your egg? Why is this system going to work?
Saturday, May 22, 2010
Data: Egg/System Name
Description
Mass
Survived
Analysis: Use complete sentences.
1. At what height did your egg crack?
2. What was it about your system that helped your egg make it to this height?
3. If you could do this lab over what would you change about your protection system and why?
4. Do you see any patterns in the data? Similarities or differences between the successful and unsuccessful designs?
